Having a late pick this year is actually pretty rad. You can grab all the key winners that fall to you, plus amazing values at the front end of the next round. Are there any tricky spots, though? Here, Dan gives you all his best value plays that typically are available where you'll be making your pick in a snake draft.

It's our third and final edition of my perfect fantasy draft. Welcome to Old Man Squad, fantasy basketball, presented by a fan duel in the Fan Duel Sports Book. I'm Dan Bespritz. Subscribe. You bow those. I love you so much, but please subscribe as we settle in today to take a look at our favorite grabs from the late pick slots, nine through 12 effectively. This is the third in the three part series where we analyze the back end, having a pick near the end of the first round and how that takes you through a snake trap. This is the ninth and final episode in the nine part series where we did three each on the front end, the middle, and the back. And my hope is that as we work our way through these shows, these nine episodes, you guys are now feeling pretty comfortable with, okay, I can basically get guys I like in every round no matter what pick I have because I've prepared for that and various contingencies.
Most of you know the drill at this point, but just very quickly, we're looking at the first 10 rounds of a draft because after that, really after nine, you're just grabbing whoever the hell you want from anywhere on the board. We are assuming a snake draft without third round reversal. This is basically just standard Yahoo public league kind of thing. And that's how we figure out what our player pool is. So if you have pick 12, you're going to have 13 and so on and so forth. There's a little bit of wiggle room players that might get to you at a specific spot. We're using the pre ranks off of Yahoo's board number three that came out on September the 21st. That's what most people are working off right now as we get this thing going. So dance draft with the late pick slot number one for me, Tyree's Halliburton who has a pre rank of 12. My other choices there are Janice if he happens to make it to you at the end of the first round which he likely won't, but maybe you have pick nine, he might get to you then. And Jalen Johnson is the other one. The main thing here is in the odd numbered rounds for today's episode.
Those are going to be the ones that are much harder and also ones where we're going to push into not the front end of the next round, but I might just tell you take somebody from the front end of the next round. So that's not technically a guy that's going quote unquote in that round, but like you have picks almost back to back. So you have to treat the first, the third, the fifth, the seventh, the ninth, etc. Like you have access to just a couple of guys pre rank near the end of that round and then anybody you want after that. It's a different strategy by a lot compared to what you're doing if you have a pick early or a pick middle with a pick middle. You're basically looking at guys that you think might get there from that round and then out kind of to the end of that round. So take the third round for example, you're going to look at guys that are going to be pick 27, 28, 29 range and then all the way through to number 36.
This strategy when you have a late selection is very different because you know on the first round, you might have access to like Jalen Johnson and Tyree's Halberd and probably not, you know, he gets to you at pick 10, 11 or 12. And then if you really wanted to, you could look at guys going in the beginning of the next round. But what I didn't do on this show is I didn't list the guys that are typically going in the next round in the earlier one. That's a lot of background. I think you guys probably just want to hear me talk about the players. So Tyree's Halberd and I like him as a late pick in the first round. I think he's mostly going to be good to go at the beginning of the year the way the the paces are talking is that restrictions are going to be fairly minimal. Even if there are any at all, there's probably going to be some kind of ramp up for him. So he might not be a first rounder right out of the gate. But thanks to his incredibly efficiency, he's a really interesting player to build around regardless of format. I love him in Roto because he gives you efficiency.
I love him in head to head because he flips the board. You can take punt points guys. You could go guard build. There's a lot of different directions. You can go with Halberd and if you go guard build, you're probably going to be a lower turnover guard build team than somebody who has, you know, a three and a half to four turnover guy in the first round. Johnis, obviously, if he gets there is a really easy punt player to build, especially since you'd have your pick at the litter coming back in the second round. And Jalen Johnson would be my third choice in this range, kind of a distant third because I do see him as a very poor man's Nicola Yokic, where he's like good at all of the same categories where Yokic is great, but he's better than average in them. And it's really hard to have a Jalen Johnson team where you then build a better squad than Nicola Yokic team because they both kind of lend themselves to the same general build, which is punt blocks attacking rebounds and assists and steals in particular. And then with Yokic, you also get to attack more scoring, better field goal percent.
It's just really hard for a Jalen Johnson team to beat a Yokic team one on one. But I like the Jalen Johnson team because there's other avenues you could take. You could put points with him like Haliburton. You could do the punt blocks thing like Yokic and just try to do it better, I guess, than the Yokic team. But at least again, it flips the board just a little bit. So that's why I would lean Jalen Johnson. But you'll notice, even though I really like guys at the beginning of the second round, I didn't put them in this part of the list because I wanted to stay true to a particular round. You'll understand what I'm talking about better as we go because in the second round, there's a bunch of guys I like at the front end of it. I don't even need to go farther down the board because you're going to have pick 13 or 14 or 15 in this instance. And you'll probably get one of these three guys. But Kevin Durant would probably be my preferred play. Cooper Flag is right up there with him. Same with your mom Marie. It's kind of like a, you know, close your eyes and roll a three-sided die and go with whatever it comes up with.
Like Cooper Flag is a lot like Kevin Durant in, but he's younger. So maybe you go Cooper. I don't flip flop those two. Means nothing to me. I went to rant for this particular team because I thought, look, if I'm going to go Tyree's Halibur, and I need to make sure that my percentages are really good. Because if I end up hunting points, I need to make sure that I'm good at rebounds and assists and steals and blocks and percentages and turnovers because threes are probably also going to suffer. So I went to rant picking between those two because I just wanted the better field goal percent guy. And now after these two picks, I have really good volume percentages. Flag would have been better for helping defensive stats. That's true. But I figured, you know, with the guys I can take later, and if I do go the punt points build, those guys are often pretty good at defensive stats like an Assar Thompson or a case in Wallace or a big man who blocks those guys. I'll probably end up with my team later.
I love Jamal Murray. He's one half rung down from these other two guys. I love Austin Reeves. He's also kind of a half rung down. I didn't even bother to include Reeves on this one because I don't think you're going to have to go that far if you have a pick near the front end of the second round. So this is a pretty easy one. Third round also relatively not well, no, scratch that. Not really easy because Mark and I need to start doing more public drafts to see where Mark and it is actually going in the expert drafts and drafts with you guys that I've been doing. He's gone by like pick 28. But I don't know if that's going to be the case in a public draft because I haven't done one in a while. If you like YouTube, you'll love YouTube Premium. Trey Murphy has been making it to the end of the third round in a number of drafts I've done. Kawai Leonard is on my list here more road oE than head to head, but I do think that if you're talking about pick 36, that's not that far from like pick 40 where I said I was really happy taking Kawai last year. And so yeah, I mean, after a dominant first round season where he carried lots of fantasy teams, taking him four slots earlier. That's really not that big of a deal. So Kawai is on the list, but he's on the list with the caveat that if you go Kawai, you can't do the next thing I suggest, which is Kyrie Irving or Anthony Davis. You can't go double ultra injure risk guys there, especially not if I have a team of old
Kevin Durant and guy in Haliburden coming off of big injury. So you have to mitigate your risk a little bit. And something I think folks are missing, I need to probably honorable mentions is probably not the right word for it that the chunk of players that I've got listed at the bottom, which in this one, Kyrie Irving is the guy he's my preferred fourth round pick. My honorable mentions are Anthony Davis, Derek White and Walker Kessler, two of those guys being a little younger than the other ones. Honorable mention just means alternates. So take the guy that makes sense on your team. These are just the names of the guys I like in that window in the and I tried to stay within the round itself where when we did this show for the third round, I was like, well, I'm going to list guys that maybe push into the beginning of the very next round because of where the picks fall with a late pick slot. I'm not going to tell you like, I'm not going to include the guys the next round because I'm going to put them in the very next bullet point on this thing.
I like Anthony Davis a lot in the fourth round. That's that's way too low for him. I know he's been injury prone his whole career, but like he and Kyrie were talking about first rounders in the fourth round. It's the same collife phenomenon. But again, don't do all three of those guys. Don't do two of those guys. Just do one. Or do more than one. I don't care. But boy, you're asking for trouble if they both go down and don't make it. Walker Kessler, I think, has a little bit of upside beyond that 40 range that he's done before and then Derek White, he's more of the sort of like simple, but decent play here. Now, the fifth round got harder because and I've talked about this a lot over the last few weeks. There are a lot of guys in the fifth round that I like. Those guys are largely pushing earlier on the board. Those guys are on YECO, Kong Wu, pre-rank is 50. YECO, Porter Jr. at 53. The kill Alexander Walker at 54. Joel M. Beade, if you haven't taken the risk of a guy yet at 59, Dyson Daniels at 60.
And I've actually included Dejante Murray in this mix as well because I'm still comfortable taking him in the fifth round. I don't know if I put him on this particular board because I'm trying to stay within the confines of the 12 pick round. But the problem is that a lot of these guys are gone by the end of the fifth round now. I thought, and this is where I got a little bit surprised during the attack mock. I have the recon mock, I have the attack mock and then we're doing these my perfect draft shows. During the recon mock, someone I think Dyson Daniels got to me at the end of the fifth round. But he was kind of the last one left of my list of seven or eight guys that I like that are going in this range in the attack mock. None of them made it to the end. Not one. Now what it happened in the attack mock is that because all of my favorite guys got scooped up someone that I didn't think would get there fell an extra round. That was Franz Wagner who fell from 49 down to me at pick 60.
I'm not targeting Franz. I think he's a guy that I would like to take around 60 because then that's close to where he's going to be with a smidge of upside if things get a little bit better for him or just like the fantasy game crystallizes just a tiny bit more. I don't want him at 50 because that's where I think he might get to but I'll happily take him at 60, which I think is right around Wagner's floor, but I wasn't planning to take him is the main thing there. Dyson Daniels is going in this range. He seems to be the most likely of these guys to fall to you at 60 unless you're running up against an Adam King mega pun team. You know, I don't know if you're going to go to I'm beat seems like and to kill like a walker probably the second and third most likely to fall. And again, with him beat got to put the little asterisk there. If you're going Joel, that means that you didn't get Kauai or Anthony Davis or Kyrie Irving. I can't in good conscience tell you guys to take more than one of those guys.
Probably because I have multiple players in the sixth seventh round range that I am suggesting as your second risk guy. So take a risk probably in the fourth. Consider a risk maybe in the sixth seventh and then your flyers can be risk plays as well. But I'd like you guys to try to go a little bit safer around those dudes and by safe. Hard to say exactly what that means, but you know, not a guy whose leg is falling apart like mbeads or a guy who never plays a full season like Anthony Davis. There are handfuls of guys Kauai as well who are dealing with like degenerative stuff. Those guys are obviously less safe. Even that a guy who's coming off of an injury like say a Dejante Murray who had largely been fine up to that point. Injuries are really, really, really hard to predict, but guys that never play a full season. Those guys are kind of in their own little pocket. And again, we're going to treat them as such when I finish up doing my buckets, which that's on my list, by the way, my wife has been out of town all week.
So I'm fighting to stay afloat today yesterday and the day before that and kind of the day before that as well. But by the weekend, not Sunday because that's baseball day for the kids by the weekend, I should have time to catch up a little bit. We'll do some shows on Saturday work on the buckets. Whoops. I wrote the wrong thing in there. I left Iceland. That's supposed to be Dejante Murray. Sorry guys, I was doing this very late at night and I'm a sleepy bear. So that is supposed to be Dejante Murray. There we go. Now we're back in the mix. Dan O's got it. Don't worry. We're fine. Everything's fine. Definitely not falling apart. Dejante Murray is the next one on the list. I thought he was 64. I put the wrong number in there. Yeah, I wrote 63 instead of 64. I don't know what happened to my brain. Brain not work. It doesn't really matter, but we'll fix it just to make sure everything is nice and clean here. There you go. Dejante Murray is technically listed as a sixth round pick, but I am also fully aware that he's not often available for you in the beginning of the sixth round. So I have good news for you guys. I put five other names that I would happily take at the beginning of the sixth round. Those names are Darius Garland, who I'm a little worried about. Not shut down, but just like not to push it too hard stuff, but he's going to have so
much usage with Brandon Ingram out for a while that there's just like no denying he's going to have, you know, it could be one of those like Kevin Love in Minnesota kind of years where you're looking at it going holy crap. How is he doing all this? Well, the answer is because the other like the next score on the clippers now is is Rui Hachimura, question mark. Oh, dear. Darius Garland was top 50 down the stretch last year while sharing the basketball with Kawaii Leonard. Now he's sharing the basketball with nobody. That usage is going to go through the roof. I think we're looking at a 25 and seven and a half kind of season with three and a half threes over a steel on excellent free throw percent. Your numbers are probably going to be a bit problematic and the field goal percent probably goes down, but I think we're talking about a third rounder until the clippers decide it's time to dial him back a little bit, but I'll take that shot at the sixth.
Jared Allen, I think is fine in here. He'll probably be a top 60 range center, a Tyler hero. I think much like it's actually a similar to Darius Garland in my mind where his, the risk for hero is trade, but until then he's probably a top 40 guy because the bucks are just going to need him to score. Kalell, where is probably my second favorite guy in this range behind the Jante Marie because you want to chase a crap ton of upside and he's got it. And then Ryan Rollins is kind of like you're, oh, okay, this is probably a top 55 center. Hmm, excuse me, point guard center talking about Kalell, where Milwaukee, we're just didn't Milwaukee here. Ryan Rollins is probably a 55 range point guard. Maybe doesn't have quite the upside of a Jante Marie or a Kalell, where or even a Garland, but Rollins is probably going to get minutes all year on a bad team as he continues to develop and take on kind of more of a leadership role. And this, by the way, similar to the fourth round where I gave three choices, the sixth round is another one where I was like, look, I get it. A lot of the guys we like are gone by the end of the fifth round.
I want to make sure you guys have plenty of names to reach into if all of my fifth round guys are gone. So if Dyson Daniels is gone and Joel and Beat is gone or you've already taken your risk, it's a little comfortable going into this next chunk of Dijon Tay, where Garland, Rollins, Hero, those guys can be your pick at the end of the fifth round as well. So that's why I listed them all in the sixth round, but I want to make sure you guys understand that your pick is basically both rounds together. And maybe I should have done that as like a one slash two and a three slash four and a five slash six, where it's like, look, these are the guys you should be looking at and line them up. I did it wrong. My bad. Next time around, I'll fix it. Oh, no. Now, I look what I've done. I fixed the one slide, but I didn't fix the rest of the. Oh, best, Chris.
All right. Well, I got to make sure that this is better for the rest of them. Oh, man. What a bummer. So it still says Dyson Daniels in that one slot where it should say Dijon Tay Murray and all of them, but we're going to fix it. We're going to get this right. There we go. Okay. So best for fixing his bad slides in real time. Seventh round. Nobody. There's literally no one in the seventh round in the end of seventh round range that I trust. The last few names in the seventh round basically picks like 80 through 84. Madis Bicellus is in there, but he's never going to make it to 83, 84. So I didn't even put him on the list. They like, there's a maybe a chance he makes into the 70s, but even that's been kind of rare lately. He's typically going even around earlier than this. Cedric coward. I don't really want in the 80s Caleb Wilson. I don't really want in the 80s. Zion. I definitely don't want in the 80s unless I have a Yannis.
Team Kobe White at 83. I am kind of okay with of all those names in that range. Kobe White is the one where I'd say, all right. I guess that's fine because the other guys, if you went earlier in the seventh round, Paul George is 76. He's not going to be there at the end of the round. He just won't. I love Paul George, but he ain't going to be there at the end of the round. McHale bridges is number 78. He might fall to you at the end of the round. And I'd kind of be okay with him there, but I'm not excited about it. And then I don't want Stefan Castle. I don't want VJ Edge come. So it's kind of like do I go McHale bridges or Kobe White here? Or do I just think about pulling someone that I like going kind of in the beginning or middle of the eighth round? And the answer is it's a little bit team dependent. Paddeday presents in the red corner, the undisputed undefeated weed whacker guy. Champion of hurling grass and pollen everywhere. And in the blue corner, the challenger, extra strength, Adity. Idroffs and work all day to prevent the release of histamines and cause itchy allergy
eyes. And the winner by knockout is Adity. Adity, bring it on. Athrown, my favorite pick in the early to mid-Ath is probably Norman Powell. I think he's going to be a top 50 guy and I am a little worried that the bulls trade him, but three rounds of value is hard for me to pass up for a guy that won't definitely get traded but only might be. But if you're worried about that, the Athrown has a whole chunk of players, much like the sixth round where I'd be totally fine if you wanted to take them at the end of the seventh round. Also, those guys are a manual quickly who just finds a way to be a top 60 guy, kind of no matter what's going on around him. Us Arthops and who I think might be sitting on the precipice of a real breakout season, Jaden McDaniels who should be sort of like a quiet top 75 range dude and then Dylan Harper, who's kind of like the big swing in this range. I think odds are Harper probably ends up pretty close to this ranking unless this burrs
just cut him loose. He is definitely my lowest target in this chunk, but if you include McHale Bridge's and Kobe White and just put them all together in a seven slash eight mold, I think I would probably rank them. Norm and Usar and Kobe are probably in like the upper group of three quickly. What did I say? Norm, Usar and Kobe White. Those guys are probably like the top three to pick from quickly and McDaniels would be next and then Harper would kind of be like my third tier of those guys, but at least that gives you six names of guys that are almost always there at pick 84, almost barring. Sometimes Kobe White goes a little earlier and sometimes Usar Thompson goes a little bit earlier, but the other guys are generally there around a 485 where you might have a back to back and I'm hoping that because I've now given you one, two, three, four, five, six,
six. I can do this. I need to. Hello, is this the count? Yes. How many names did I just put on the board? Six names. Let's go to rounds nine and ten because I can't do a slide and I can't count. I like that it's updating in real time. Seeing it update on your screen. Oh, Lord, gotta get it right. The bulls are interesting. Thinking through the Norman Powell thing is a very tradable contract, which is why I think folks are a little bit worried about him, but I'm still taking that shot. Chicago plus 240 to win 35 regular season games. I don't know about 35. That feels a little bit on the high side. Chicago win 30 games is minus 115. I think they might get to 30. I think they're going to play fast and I think they're going to be kind of fun and fun teams tend to just squeeze out a win here and there.
I guess 30 is a little bit of a stretch to that's all available with our buddies over at Fandall and the Fandall sports book. Chicago bulls secretly kind of fun. Go figure. Ninth round is messy again, but at the same time, the ninth round is also where you're just going to get guys flying you from all over the board. So this is kind of a hard area. Ninth and 10th is difficult to do in this sort of in this my perfect draft show. The ninth round begins to pick 97 technically and ends it picked 108 technically. The guys in there that well, that round is portingus miles bridges miles Turner the miles is put some miles on it. Hey, oh, a country song reference. Wouldn't expect to do that, but a kid on my son's baseball team had that as his walkup song. Put some miles on it. Josh Hard is number 100. Camaro 101, heart and Stein 102, jaw 103, Sugs 104, NEM Heart, Nercatch, McCollum and Watson.
Those are the guys technically listed as ninth rounders on Yahoo, but how many of those guys actually go in that range? Bridges Turner, heart, heart and Stein, Morant are the ones that I think pretty reliably go in that range. The other seven might or might not. So I threw Jalen Sugs in as my guy. I know he's not technically in the final three or four names of that round. I think he's in the back half of the ninth round, but I don't think the guys I listed before him get to you at like pick 107 or 108. I don't think Josh Hard or miles Turner is going to be there. I don't think heart and Stein's going to be there. I don't think John Morant is going to be there. And even if John Morant was, he's a build dependent kind of guy. He's a guard build dude. So much like in the seventh round, I gave you a choice. I gave you one option here. If Sugs gets to you, he probably should be the guy you take at the end of this ninth
round. But all likelihood, he won't. So I listed a truckload of players you can take in the 10th round and happily take at the end of the ninth round as well. Same thing again, I gave you five options here. Six, if you include Jalen Sugs and the guys I like to take at the beginning of the 10th round are, this is not in the, well, let me give you two them in the order that I like. So Sugs would be my preferred one. Behind him, Keegan Murray is probably my next preferred play in this range. Yacke Perl and Colin Murray Boyles are also really interesting here. I like John Collins and Namiash Keta. All of those guys typically are there at pick 108. If you're hunting health and upside, Murray Boyles and Keegan Murray are probably the two plays.
If you're hunting upside, additional upside with risk, Sugs and Perl are those guys. And if you're looking for dudes that are almost guaranteed to be like in the 80 to 100 range, John Collins and Namiash Keta are those two guys. There's not much in the way of upside for John Collins and Keta, but I also don't think that they're going to crap the bet where Sugs might miss half the year and Murray Boyles. They're saying all the right things about his playing time, but it's definitely not guaranteed and Yacke Perl, if his back goes out, well, then he's at clunker, but Murray Boyles becomes the better one. So there's a lot of risk factors there. And I think again, make your choice in each of these 10 slots based on team needs. If you went co-y Leonard in the third, probably don't take a risk guy in the fourth, sixth or seventh rounds, but go ahead and do another one in the ninth or 10. So make co-y Leonard and Jalen Sugs your two risk guys.
If you didn't take co-y Leonard, let's say you took Joel and Bede in the fifth, you can do one more risk later on. But if you went Kyrie in the fourth and somehow Paul George got to you in the seventh round, probably don't take another risk in the ninth or 10th, probably then lean more into the Collins Keegan Keta mold. Right? You say, you guys see how this works? I tend to type these up and I drop them in one tweet, which context, not there when you put it in one tweet, but I wanted people to know like these are the chunks of guys that I'm looking at, buckets, chunks, whatever, chunks really more of vomit reference, I guess. Easily easy to distract young Dan Bespriss when he's not sleeping that well and solo parenting for a week. What the hell was I talking about? I don't even remember anymore. The thing that gets lost, I think in translation a little bit, less so on the podcast than
and more so on the social media side. Keegan, that's over at Dan Bespriss is when I put these lists up, that doesn't mean that you have to take the guys listed in the one through 10 area. Those are my favorite names in that range. But sometimes my favorites don't go together. That's okay. I'm not telling you how to build your first 10 picks. I'm telling you, if I could get those 10 guys, I might, I probably would have been probably would do it, but you have to check yourself, each spot along the way. Check yourself for risk. Check yourself for build. Do I have a single center in the top 10 here? No. Not one of these guys is center eligible. Obviously, and I've said this before, the third round, I tend to like to take a center. Maybe in the third round or early fourth here, because again, it's basically the same
pick for you guys. Maybe that's the reason you go co-high Leonard in the third and you go Walker Kessler, early fourth. So you take your risk in the third, you get your center in the fourth or maybe you flip it. Maybe you take Walker Kessler or Chad Holmgren if he falls to you in the third and you take high reurving in the fourth. You get your big man in the third, you take your risk in the fourth round. Later on, sixth, seventh, eighth rounds. You only have one center on your roster. Great. There are some in my honorable mentions. Jared Allen, Killa Ware in that early chunk, Murray Boyles, John Collins, Pertle and Keta, all center eligible in the ninth, tenth range. So put the pieces together for your team from the names I'm giving you here. These are basically guys I'm telling you. These are guys that I think probably overperform their ADP and are typically attainable at each of these pit stops along your draft.
And my hope again, in doing these shows, the my perfect draft show, I know it's a buzzy title for Dan's favorites. If I ran a column down the board and you had a late pick, that doesn't fit in the YouTube title or description all that well. My goal in doing the three of them, front, middle, end is to give you guys an opportunity to say, oh, okay, I got seventh pick in my draft. I'm going to watch Dan's middle of the draft. His preferred targets show and I'm throwing these guys in my queue and I'm ready to get them at each spot along the way. I'm ready to go. I'm doing 40 hours. So you can do one and a half. And that's kind of the ultimate goal of old man squad fantasy basketball as a podcast to simplify the game so that I do all the work. And you guys let all the words hit you in the head and you hopefully learn along the way how to think about players not to think about fantasy basketball and maybe someday
down the line, you won't even need me anymore. No, don't do that. Please continue to listen and watch. But I want to make it so that you guys can compete with the best fantasy players out there while doing 10% the work that they have to do. And I hope that we are getting to that point, little by little. This was Dan's perfect draft with a late pick in the first round and snaking your way through. I'm going to leave this up this board up on the screen while I play myself out again, thanks to Fandwell, this sports book, fan tracks for their continued partnership. Consider becoming a free member for a month at the very least that button is right on your screen or through actually Patreon doesn't have the free month, but that would be cool. But ultimately, the one thing I really need you has to do subscribe so that you can join us for our next show coming up here on the channel. And I've got to try to remember like what order I'm putting these things out. I think this show is dropping. Is that Friday morning?
Yeah, so Friday afternoon or evening will probably do a rebuild on some of our shows we did on the last Yahoo board. So keep an eye out for busts and breakouts and league winners and sleepers and flyers and all that good stuff. It's time to rebuild those off the new board. And I'll see you for those because you're going to subscribe, right? Right, right, right, right.
