Matt and Paranoid American break down Common Side Effects, the Adult swim animated series that Amazon rejected and Mike Judge co-signed, about a mycologist who discovers a miracle cure and immediately becomes a target of big pharma, the DEA, hippie communes, and pretty much everyone else. They get into the Paul Stamets and Terence McKenna influences baked into the show's DNA, the DMT portal beings, the CIA's real-life town-dosing experiments, and why the villain of this story isn't one corporation. It's the whole system.

Be almost just in the name at the Cartoon Cabal. See just that what cost comes in at the Cartoon Cabal. So much for the finding games at the Cartoon Cabal. Hello, welcome to the Cartoon Cabal, Boba Boba Boba Boba Boba Boba, we're all having common side effects from the things we've been watching. There's the mat here over there. It's a paranoid American. How's it grooving? I feel like I was glitching out when you did that. It almost felt like I was going through side effects. Okay.
Yeah. Or the matric glitching maybe you see another cat, that sort of thing. But yeah. Just to enjoy the food. It's funny. You mentioned the series when we were doing straight. Maybe when we first started Cartoon Cabal. I came with the E. Bangelian. I think this was the first one you mentioned. As such, I've had the tab open on my computer for like a year and a half. So that's kind of where like we're like we're doing it. It was a good. I can finally close the tab, which weirdly doesn't have that much information on the series. Although it does have a pretty good plot description. So maybe that'll be helpful. I think I just happen to be watching this at the time, because it had just come out, you know, like episode by episode. So I want and I watched it again. So I've seen the entire series twice. This was your first time seeing it. Is he just mentioned what like what did you think about? Because when I was watching this, I felt like Matt would get this. Like this would be one that I think Matt would appreciate. Maybe more so than others. What was that? Yeah. Of course I get it. I think I mentioned to you before I do on a sidebar. Like I have not seen adult swim shows for geez, like 15 years.
You know, in the in the oughts, I was into them. I was in the States more since this was originally going to be an Amazon show. And as soon as they like actually put it all together and then presented like, all right, here's what you guys paid for. Amazon was like, yeah, now we don't we don't want that anymore. So then you got to promise you will end up on an adult swim. But the one that that comes to mind, I'm going to double down and we'll have to hit this one soon as. Xavier renegade angel where you basically take out the mushrooms and all logic. And that's the Xavier renegade angel. I saw the first episode. And I was taking some notes, but I was just like, what is this conversation going to even be about? Yeah, this one does have the benefit of having plot. The idea here is to fuse some comedy. Their main point of reference was, I guess the co-in brothers burn after reading, which embarrassingly is a co-in brothers film that I have not actually watched. I think I got on Blu-ray. It's a never one where I think I got on Blu-ray, but I've never watched it.
It's seen most of the co-in brothers films. Have you seen burn after reading? A while ago and I wasn't I wasn't paying attention with the intent to mind to remember it. Okay, there's not that much production information on the series. And that was one of the main things I got that that's kind of what they were going for. And of course, they're thinking of Paul Stammace, they're thinking of parents, McKenna, that sort of stuff when they make this. The character Marshall apparently is vaguely supposed to be a Paul Stammace thing. Yeah, well, all right, well, let's do a proper introduction here. The series is called Common Side Effects. As we mentioned, it aired on Adult Swim, although it was originally created for Amazon by Joseph Bennett, who's the writer and the creator of the series itself, and then Steve Haley, who was listed as a screenwriter slash producer. And he's got some other credentials. Like he was a producer on Vip, on 30 Rock, on American Dad. So it seems like he already had some expertise and getting shows made.
And some of the interviews I was reading about, the original production process of this, is that every time they went to pitch it, specifically Amazon, I think, when they shut it back down. And they were like, this should just be a live action show. Like you guys, we should be doing this live action, CG, special effects, because it's a little bit too serious, drama, like action, a little bit. And I think that was part of the reason why this stands out a little bit on Adult Swim, too, because a lot of adult swim shows, they're sort of stand alone, a little bit abstract, like the episodes can be agnostic from each other. And this one really does, it's like something you have to watch from start to end. And it builds up with like this, like whole different B plots and C plots and D plots. It almost feels like an episode or a series of like the wire a little bit, like all the different interconnected pieces that they try and like tie in. So it's definitely not anything typical that you would normally expect from an Adult Swim show. Yeah.
We'll say like with, and I'm not trying to add or take away what he did on the show, but I have found that if you, on recent shows, if you hang around the writers room long enough, you're going to get like an at least an executive producer, producer credit. We're doing severance. We just kept noticing, oh, everyone who writes for the show ends up getting listed as a producer. And a lot of shows you watch, I like Star Trek and Star Trek, you know, modern Star Trek, we'll go on for like two minutes of executive producer credits, you know. And the opening and it's like, what does that even mean when there's like 20 people that list is executive producers? Oh, I think it's a good special word that you can use that now means that you get, you know, something from every sale, whatever, depending on what was baked into the contract, which isn't like industry wise, but the fact that you've got that credit can mean things. I don't know. Yeah, they get bestowed upon you. Like you get knighted almost. No, I've got a bat phone to Roddenberry entertainment for the Star Trek thing. And you know, it's like, yeah, I can mention things about the shows, but like, you know, they can listen to me or not listen to me.
And he's on there because they want the name Roddenberry on their Star Trek show, you know. So that's probably the primary reason. He's very clear. Like, yeah, I'm not creatively really involved with these. And speaking of production credits, executive produced by Mike Judge, so be with some butt head, King of the Hill and. I feel like that's kind of like a, you know, David Lynch Mel Brooks elephant man thing, we're, of course, Mike judge did put his name on this and did the voice and as well, but kind of the thing where it's like, yeah, I'm like, I guess there's a little bit of a king of the hill, like hangover in this, although that's a show I never watch much of. So I can't really compare the hell. I don't think his fingerprints are on this that much. It's not his baby. So King of the Hill was pretty much required watching, especially in Texas, growing up, because they had it on, I think like twice a day and it was both, both times it was right
around dinner time. So you were guaranteed on Fox, if you were eating dinner between like six and seven or like six 30 and seven 30, you were going to get two helpings of King of the Hill, like the most prime time slot. And I get this is like a Texas only thing too. This wasn't the same in other states. So I wonder if one of the things, the cultural thing, I've maybe never watched a full episode of King of the Hill. Well, I know what's getting out of the list. I probably saw the first one because you know, it's a beat of some butt had the guys a new show. So you watch it. I think maybe living in Georgia, just like, oh, I can't like, this isn't what I know of a redneck because of Texas redneck and a Georgia redneck are kind of different. So I maybe it just like had a little dissonance in that way. And it just seemed kind of dry to me, which maybe I can be humor. Now, once my judge started making movies, I love office space, I love the theocracy. So, you know, it's it's it's is dry. It's so weird, man. So in the, I guess the main reason I mentioned that too in King of the Hill is that common side
that's kind of has that same like serious beat to it. But it's way again, it's way more sequential really does feel like a long movie that's stitched together in these little 22 minute episodes. I think it does benefit like it's still got some comedy in there, but it benefits from having kind of that crime thriller serious, you know, like like that that makes the dry humor make more sense like where you know, Hank Hill and is a dumpy suburban home doesn't I mean, I guess you can leak some drama out of that, but it's it's not like an FBI right is it? Now, I'm going to have to put together a short list of like the top three episodes that we'll have to watch to see not not to like sell you on it, but I guess just to make sure that you see like the top three ones. No, I'm down for it like people my age like, you know, and as a kid, I want to see like robots and space aliens and stuff like that, right? And a, you know, so so hillbilly nonsense would have been like unappealing to me, whereas as I get older, I think I think as especially Jen acts and millennials get older, you know, hillbilly nonsense becomes like more entertaining,
you know, like country bearer, jamboree is one of my favorite attractions at Disney now, you know. I would much prefer speaking to kids. I would probably rather know that like my young like 12 year old kid is watching common side effects versus Ren and Stimpy, which is what I was probably watching around like that age. My daughter just turned 17 and a few weeks ago, I just like kind of like slipped her like four David Lynch movies. I was like, don't watch this with anyone the family, including me, but you should watch these. Okay. And if you're going to watch it with some friends, I'd rather you do it at our house where it's safe, right? I didn't say that. You watch her or she wants her. Maybe she won. I don't know if I sold her on her or not, but I would like make sure you get pulled over within, you know, two hours of watching a David Lynch film. I got to like, we're up over there. Oh, it's a lost highway. Firewalk with me, a race or head. And in the straight story, you watch the straight. I said you watch straight stories, anybody. Firewalk with me is a weird one that just unless you've also seen at least some episodes.
You know what? Some of the people who love that movie the most didn't watch the series. Okay. I've run across three people who love that movie. Maybe they since watched it, but like they were not familiar with the series. It was just that movie did it for them. Okay. All right. I guess yeah, I'm the very nature of David Lynch where it's like it doesn't have to make sense. Now with common side effects, I tried to pace myself and watch it properly. But so last week I got to the first three episodes, you know, one and I do whatever. And then I got distracted and slacker and all that. So I ended like, binging five of them last night and finishing the last two this morning. Actually, this one of the first shows I think I've legitimately bingeed our mission is 24 seven access to fresh food for all. This is how to copy from joy one of one with how to caught the and that was Jalaya Hemings. She and her husband created nourish and bloom market when we decided to open this 24 seven AI grocery store. People thought we were crazy, but our first store was completely community funded.
And when your family and your friends bet on you, it hits a little differently. And the city of Atlanta took notice and decided to be part of the change. But the city actually put dollars behind that change and said that the big box stores won't come will build our own. One community funded store became several, but eradicating food deserts across the country takes more than a village. We won the AT&T small business contest ramp and that was what we needed to open the first AI power shipping container, grocery store in the country. Having a powerhouse like AT&T stand behind you takes it to a whole new level connecting changes everything AT&T. All right, quick round of trivia before we get back into the show, but we're doing it differently this time. Every guy listening right now, you're contestant. No buzzers, no calling in. Just answer honestly to yourself. Here we go. You got a belly and a little chest that won't go away no matter what you try. Gast by the middle of the afternoon, no drive left in the tank, and lastly you lack that confidence in mental edge. Fellowes, here's the thing.

That's bioma.health slash GLP1 code CR show for 15% off. It's not a bad one because it does like the end of every episode ends with some kind of cliffhanger. And I guess we're we are going to do some spoilers. We're going to have to. We're going all the spoilers for this. Okay, well, first let me just do a quick little overview. So this is the name or sorry, this is like the pitch, I guess, is that a weird my college is discovers a mushroom and Peru that can cure essentially anything.
And immediately discovers that a universal cure is a threat to every institution surrounding medicine. So that's a pretty decent overview that like this hippie mushroom, that's a true black or do that happens to also kind of be like a genius my college is. And he's got a friend that was in like his bio lab in back in high school or in like college. And then over time she ends up joining like big pharma and he goes the opposite way he goes until like he's living in his van going to Peru and just you know living with nature and she's kind of in like the big business world. They they meet up in the very first episode at some protest. And I guess like she's probably there on behalf of big pharma and he doesn't necessarily realize that. And he's trying to talk about this big discoveries got. So she's sort of all years. And that was that's the original impression is that, oh, it's going to be this story about a like a hippie that finds some miracle drug and big pharma is going to take it from him.
I guess they're yeah the whole like since high school thing. I mean, I guess people do sometimes get a little suspect about that a few years. I reconnected with a guy I play within my first band. And I'm now we're sending each other new music blah blah blah. But his first reaction seemed to be like like maybe he had people from the past hitting him up for money because he's like what are you actually want to talk about. I'm like I want to talk about music. I was like, oh yeah music. That's great. But he definitely seemed like a little bit like on edge at first. Like I was going to try and get him in a Scientology or something. I have had you know old like military buddies they call about of the blue it's like, damn, I haven't talked to this guy since like we were actually in the military together. And the last time you know, I was like, oh, this is going to be so cool. We're going to catch up. And then I realized about 15 minutes in that he was trying to pitch me on like some cruise package. So he had gone wrapped up in some pyramid scheme and just like he had my number all these years, but just decided that you know to earn some like free cruise points or whatever that he was going to finally call.
Anyway, I guess my point is Marshall, I guess should have been slightly more skeptical as he learns later, right. So maybe that is a you know the slight bit of skeptical with some. You know what though, I think the like Marshall's character is the one that he'd give everyone of like a first chance to his own detriment, right. Like it kind of screws him over that he does that with almost everybody like he kind of trust he's a very trusting person. Even though he realizes that he has to be really careful. So he might trust you, but then the second you like turn around to go and you know do something bad to him. He's already gone like he's already ran because he's ready for it. And in his own quotation like he's trusting enough and possibly in that way dumb enough that he's what he saved almost been killed six or seven times, which in the case of this show means he was killed six or seven times. Yeah, so I guess that's the other big side. We already hinted at it in the overview, but one of the big spoiler alerts is that you realize I think he died in a horrific crash.
And this little mushroom that he found this blue angel mushroom that can cure anything, including death essentially. So he died, but at that exact moment was saved by this mushroom. And that's when he realized that it's like a miracle cure. So it's the show is literally about a miracle cure that can cure any disease and they can bring you back from death and they show this over and over again a few of our times. Okay, hey, we'll see if this time much synchronicity happens. Scott who's been on the show a few times a meeting him this weekend. Apparently he's obsessed on us going into the forest and looking for mushrooms. So that's his that's his thing now. Yeah. Well, okay, we'll be making teas. I don't think we're gonna find the blue angels. I think it was I think you're supposed to be like psilocybin inspired, but obviously they if it cures cancer and brings you back from the dead is not just psilocybin. But it seems like that was one of the the influences to like what the blue angels represent in this particular series.
But adding that element adds so much more. I mean, taking mushrooms and having a trip and maybe you know seeing a fun hallucinations who is one thing. But yeah, you know, curing blunt force trauma and healing bones is is is who cares. I'm thinking that like sorry at that point. Those are the two different extremes on that spectrum though, but there's there is absolutely an entire like immunity of people that do believe mushrooms are some kind of a miracle care. Maybe that isn't fix a broken bone, but that for almost any mental issue that someone's going through. Someone out there that's like if you took mushrooms, you could you could fix that with mushrooms, you know, psychedelics. And I don't I don't discount that. In fact, there's without going on too much of a tangent, but there's a really compelling evidence that the hallucinations and the euphoria that you get from like a psychedelic experience are really just happy side effects. And that the part that people say is therapeutic and makes you have like a different outlook and all that is the neuroplasticity triggered from that trip.
So like the euphoria and the everything looks cool and music sounds weird and I can smell, you know, color and all of that might just be side of that might just be the common side effects. The actual active, you know, part that makes you like change has nothing to do with all of that, you know what I mean, or like you could essentially isolate the do from each other. Well, we could consider the synthetics then because the the once the pharmaceutical companies and common side effects learns about the mushroom they're trying to synthesize it right and the best they come up with is what cool ranch seasoning. But yeah, like I mean, you know, we have LSD that's that's a different thing than than a a plant, you know, or a fungus, I should say in the case of the period on the Urgot. Hey, it's Ryan C. We've planned for the plot twists so support is always available. Because a great trip starts with peace of mind. Right, right, right. So, something you didn't mention in your plot, somebody that I guess probably goes in, those the portal. Maybe the portal. Maybe we'll find that it shows trips out way harder and it's already approved second season. Because the portal is a very ripe for lots of weird psychedelics. So, what's your take on the portal? Describe the portal. Well, I already alluded you take the mushroom and you see the mushroom being. So, I'm assuming we're seeing the mushroom being. They're crossing a bit of DMT here. This is kind of a miracle like all for one drug. People are being like psychologically propelled into a new space, which I have not done DMT, but I've heard people talk about doing that.
Again, I've talked about wild induction dream. So, I guess that's kind of like going through a portal in a way. So, except that you know, this is my self. This part is actually incredibly fascinating to me because it's one of those weird. Consistencies that spans cultures, but it's just like certain drugs, not every, like not every single psychedelic on the planet. It also reports seeing entities, but when it comes to DMT and I think Salvia for sure is another big one that these particular psychedelics that a very recurring theme is like these entities or like a portal open or a door that you have to go through or that's like blocking your access to and from. So, I think a literal representation of a portal between different two different realms and different entities that sort of exist in like that purgatory, you know what I mean? And like in the in between space because once you once you get into the state in which you're seeing the entities, you're already not in normal reality, right?
You're in like a shifted reality where you see entities and you see portals, but then the portal represents yet another sort of phase of being, right? So, I guess like when you see the portal and you see the entities until you go through that portal, you're still just on the tail end of like a normal reality. Now, I talk about your dreams as sometimes considered waste words. I don't think so. I mean, you know, traditional society is like, I'm just talking about. I'm sure of our lives doing it seems important enough, but yeah, so I had not watched the last two episodes because I guess I guess there's some extreme violence before the raid episode, but not not as much, right? The raid is definitely the one where blood and gore starts covering the screen some more. And then the seed vomiting himself up over and over, but anyway, I woke up at like 6, 20 in the morning a little too early. I was like, I'll get 10 more minutes of sleep. Woke up like a full hour and 20 minutes later and had this bizarre dream where I was like in like kind of this GTA sort of world, like, you know, like it was vice city or something.
I was doing stuff by things and I didn't have a gun or anything and at some point I was like, well, this is a video game. Like I so I go and like I guess I bumped a security guard and just became horrifically violent and after a few moments of violence, I was like now watching it. Like I'm watching the guy do it. Like I can't do that. I'm worth the dream. And then I wake up and put on the raid and it's like very similar to the dream I just had. So that was kind of weird. And you know, so it was a premonition of what you were about to watch on the show. Kind of because last night I watched a documentary about the history of McDonald's. So I'm pretty sure the dream didn't was it was not affected by that. Well, I also write watch five episodes of this, but they weren't as violent, right? It was that last episode that really got the blood flowing. I want to think you kind of know what to expect because you can. Here's one of the other really interesting parts about this show. And I guess it was echoed in some of the interviews they have with the creators, but that it's not necessarily hippies and nature versus big pharma, even though that's the first episode that's where it leads into.
But it kind of becomes like him against the world, right? Like he's got this miracle cure and not only is big pharma after him, but even like other hippie communes that want to market it and like patent it in license it there after him. There's like the government is after him because who knows of this things even regulated? Is this a felony? Is it by the end of the show? Right. So it's the a's after him. So over time you see that it's it's almost like the common idea is like there's this conspiracy. It's a day like they don't want the miracle cure to get out, but it's like, okay, we'll do hell's days just big pharma. And this series is very nuanced about it, but it's like no, it's the entire world is like everybody in the system has some ulterior motive to not allow a miracle cure out into the world. And it doesn't require them to all meet every Tuesday and be like, all right, how are we going to suppress it again this week? It's just that like enough people with power and influence don't want a miracle cure to be accessible. So just in their individual ways of continuously suppressing it just remains suppressed worldwide essentially.
I think I just nightly do it. We got Hildi his kind of X mentor and and and the biggest kind of like old hippie lady and the whole thing and her first thing is like, hey, let's sell it in market as much as we can, you know. Yes, so she's reminds me of like the apple like where the counter culture culture, they also is going to maybe charge you a little bit more. So like he offers this alternative medicine, but she does it in freaking bulk, right? Like she's basically selling in the worst alpha brain pills kind of like that sort of her angle that you realize over time. Well, I mean, now that we as legal in many parts of states, which I don't live in the states, I get no benefit from that. But I have heard people talking about like, well, now there's people making factories and there's still people kind of growing and paying attention to it. And some folks have noticed, maybe you know, if there's entities in the plants, the ones that are given attention that are taking care of are going to be more fascinating than the ones in a sterile laboratory, you know.
I'm probably more of a boring skeptic on this whole angle to where like I do think that maybe big pharma could synthesize this if they had an ability to, although we're getting into super natural territory. So I don't know in this particular cartoon universe because we realize every cartoon universe has its own rules in this cartoon universe is coming wrap back from the dead. So I think that you said a supernatural act or did they just unlock like a normal part of reality? Like that's a huge difference that hasn't really been explained at all. Yeah, I think in the context of this cartoon, we do have to say that it you this, this, you know, a plant is still physical. There's still some science there. So the fact that you can be brought back from the dead is now science, do the mushroom. So in the portal, what goes on in the portal, that's a different conversation, right? That's why the portal stays in the portal. No, it doesn't it. It slips out the portal. They start sending messages to each other using the portal. No, no, not at all. No Vegas rolls and things are jumping in out of the portal. That's when things get messy.
That's where I would see the next series is it's kind of getting tripier because I'm like, well, the port it's it's kind of like, you know, the first series of lost. Oh, we open the hatch. So the second series gets tripier because now we get all the darma stuff in the hatch, you know. That that's kind of where my hopes are going. So there's there's another really cool aspect of this is that the mushroom, this blue angel requires at least two different ingredients. There's probably more than that we're going to discover. But the two ingredients is toxic runoff from like this big pharma corporation style like, like their toxic outputs, sludge that gets dumped in the nature and it shouldn't. And then this turtle that the main character has. And when the turtle poops in a place where this radioactive sludge or whatever grows, that's how you get these blue angels. So you you have to have bio like hazardous toxic industrial waste infiltrating nature in order to get the miracle cure.
So this is a so this is a brand new substance, meaning these it's not like the people of South America Peru had ever encountered these particular portal beings, right? Like, you know, you can figure out I wasca, but that doesn't involve toxic sludge. And it doesn't your standing is that Marshall is like the very first person that has ever discovered this because it has to grow out of this hazardous, you know, toxic sludge. I mean, that I brought it by Alaska though, because we were like, how did you figure out how to do that? Right? You know, and I guess by mistake, you could say trial and error, you could call it a series of mistakes, right? He has died six or seven times now. So mistakes were made. I guess if you're my colleges and you're actually eating just random mushrooms that you find it would help to have something that brings you back from the dead. Right. And most of his is getting shot air blunt trauma is most of his death. So that's that have to do with the mushroom, you know. And I yeah, one of there's a limit to it, but it but it does appear that as soon as you get brought back to life or it cures whatever ailment, you're clean slate all over again.
But you we don't get all the rules, but like you stay the same age that you were. So I don't think you can necessarily be old and eat it. Now you get young. Like it just kind of remembers where you're at and then it restores you back to what you're supposed to be. Let's walk back that statement a bit though, because the guy that he saves from the car crash basically goes insane with hallucinations from the the Blue Angel beings, right? The company CEO does a, you know, mechanist style heroic dose of mushrooms is now having catatonic hallucinations in a hospital bed. So it doesn't necessarily I mean, there does seem to be something about the person's temperament to what the mushroom will actually do or the dose is the cure, right? Or the dose of the car the car accident guy just got the one mushroom, but that has basically made him go permanently insane. And you know, maybe he wasn't that hinge to start with and now he's just completely unhinged with these hallucinations as well as having the hallucinations too. It's just not driving him insane. This is why you should do psychedelics as a teenager. I'm not advocating that this is just I'm quoting a source that I don't remember.
But this is why you should do psychedelics as a teenager so that when later somebody saves your life with the Blue Angel mushroom and you come back from, you know, dead back into the world of living. And you're saying that you don't have to go insane and spend your second chance, you know, tripped out like you could just be like, Oh, yeah, no, it's cool. I saw psychedelic entities. That's a thing that happens. And then you can just move on with your life. Yeah, yeah. So maybe the car accident dude was just like very ungroovy. I mean, it was certainly very ungroovy. He was cool. He was a straight edge growing up. Yeah. Bring up Scott again. And our use when we when we were playing with the psychedelics more. Yeah, I would I just in Atlanta was the synthetics and in Australia. Apparently, you know, they were drowning in mushrooms over their philosopher stone or whatever. So that's sometimes I believe it is. It is. That was his favorite. But yeah, sometimes we get into it. It's like, you know, obviously like there's some continuity. But those are different experiences, you know, and I'm a little enviable of well, okay, mushrooms. I did run across twice once.
It was very cool. The other time I just got sick. So, you know, you got to be a little careful. The mushrooms. Don't you? Those are both teenagers. Yeah, maybe we're yeah, we're gonna turn this into a whole whole like reminiscing episode. But the other. I guess for me, you get second might have been the wrong ones too. Also, I don't actually like mushrooms as a part. There's a problem issue. You know, so it's like I convinced myself I like broccoli for like two years. And after two years, like, no, I just I know I don't like broccoli. You know, I don't like raw mushrooms cut like sauteed mushrooms. Like I can get down with those from a nice restaurant. I'll sometimes be like, no, that's probably prepared a little above average. So it's given a shot. So whatever I get a nice restaurant, at least give it a shot, you know, although I'm pretty sure you can't saute any sort of psychedelic mushrooms like every most psychedelics are incredibly unstable. They will take the psychedelics out of them. Right. Yeah, you'll put the psychedelics. I guess you could still eat it. But then like what's the point at, you know, at that point.
Now, usually I think you said you took character notes and then episode notes. I went straight episode notes. And I am looking at a wall of notes here in the end. So I can do a rundown on some of the characters. So the main character is Marshall Kusso. He's this like Paul Stammett's I think is the main character that he's kind of based on Paul Stammett's is one of these like Joe Rogan, my colleges that goes all over the world. And he's like a big mush, you know, my college is mushroom expert. And he's got an overarching theory that the mycelium, which is kind of the root network of mushrooms, the mycelium is a global organism, like an ancient global organism, like a neural network that all mushrooms all fungus can tap into and communicate with each other. And that ultimate over simplifying some of this, but that ultimately this ancient nervous network, this neural network has created and manipulated all the other species on the planet in order to do its bidding.
So for example, I think my favorite take on this is that the only reason humans went into space, if you believe that is because mushrooms decided they need to go into space. So they created humans because humans could go into space and then they could just latch on to the spacecraft. And that's the way that they're going to basically populate the entire universe is just like we are just a tiny little tool in their big massive manipulation game. So that's Paul Stamets, maybe oversimplified, but I like that take he's based on that and then obviously a whole bunch of Terence McKenna with like all the DMT entities and everything. Yeah, most of my Terence McKenna is when he would do electronic music and do weird voiceovers. That's actually how I got started getting the Alan Watts as well, though I have listened to tons of Alan Watson's. Terence McKenna's a, I really like Terence McKenna, but he's a little bit more exhausting to just listen to. He's a very like college, like the cool college professor lecture guy, although he has some like heavy hitter Alan Watts has got like collection after collection after collection Terence McKenna has as one ultra banger called society is not your friend.
And I do think that my first time hearing it was bait it was on top of really annoying electronic with like weird strobe sort of like VJ effects and stuff going on. So I've had to track down the non annoying versions of some of these talks and just like listen to him. Oh, yeah, that happened with Alan Watts to you'll find a lot of ones where people put music behind him. Don't don't do that. I just want to hear him. But he has the I think the thing with Watts is he just kind of it sounds like Obi-Wan is trying to teach you about reality because of his accent. So it feels to me. Hey, it's Ryan C. Just because we're on this particular tangent and I know that you like just weird psychedelic off path things. Recently off the fine the title of it off recently saw a out is Huxley documentary that was done in the late 90s, but it was done by this like UK electronic band. That also wanted to make a documentary on out is Huxley and there's certain parts of it where they're just like reading his letters. But there's a weird artistic shot close up of tables with milk and like bowling balls and apples, but then there's like actually like a fake astronaut scene going on in the background. Just not explained at all, but then the camera will just slowly move the different tape recorders that are playing like out is Huxley quotes.
It's very like electronic artistic like philosophy like right in the same sort of niches Terrence McKenna and Watts. I mean, hey, I one of the ones Watts I said I sampled Alan Watts before us to sample the Chris well the great that's the guy you hear at the beginning of a plan nine from outer space, but yeah. Oh, let's see what the other characters is Francis Apple White. So Francis Apple White is the girl that Marshall knows from high school it was high school lab partner. And he doesn't realize this at the beginning of the series, but he figures it out towards the end that she's an assistant to the CEO of this huge farm farm pharmaceutical company. So she literally represents his exact opposite throughout this show, but they're like these old friends and she's clearly manipulating him. But she's not necessarily the worst person in the whole series like she's not the villain, even though she's his opposite.
She acts as the villain till she realizes, oh no, I'm the villain, you know, and has a kind of maybe we're the baddies. Yeah, she realizes that although if she had thought about it early on, she probably would have realized that at any point. Right. It's obvious to the viewer. I mean, I guess there, you know, like the I'm going to assume they're like maybe in their 30s, right? So she's probably just been like corporate ladder climbing for 10 years without paying too much attention to it. And you know, like I that does happen. You that's the banality evil where it's like you're doing the evil without even like really thinking about it. And her boss, the CEO, that's who Mike judge plays. So you get a little bit of via Mr. Anderson slash Hank Hill voice from that. And then there's the DEA odd couple, which is probably like I kind of consider them as a pair as like an individual character almost. And it's really I got love the dynamic between the two of them, right? They're not just these like the bad, oh, the bad guy DEA agents, like they clearly have some of their own character flaws and like their own weird motivations.
No, that when I when I read like, Oh, Cohen brothers influences like that can't like I think when I was watching the first episode and they came on screen. I'm like sitting there thinking Cohen brothers. So that's kind of like the influence on the sleeve part of that, you know, which I liked that they were fun. And that's a Kapano and Harrington. Those are the two cops. You mentioned Hildi. Hildi is the interesting one. That's like the OG that he tried that Marshall trusts. She's kind of like the the grower, I guess, like the lady that's always been growing, you know, and like doing the black market thing. But you can kind of trust her like like honor among thieves. And then you realize at the end, sport alert that there is no honor among thieves and she pushes Marshall off a cliff to basically prevent him from letting everyone know about this blue angel mushroom because she's in an episode titled Cliff's Edge. They do kind of some of these cliff hangers. They kind of put on like right out there for you, you know, yes, like the cliffhanger of the episode is actually on the edge of the cliff in an episode called Cliff's Edge.
And yeah, and I really do like though that they show that even, you know, the hippie commune aspect of this whole industry, like the psychedelic world, like they are also cutthroat they will do the exact same things to you. The big pharma would do. They're just operating, you know, on the black market versus not on the black market. Here's something I recently covered the show Severance and I had not an issue more of an observation and an observation in this as well. And I wonder if it's kind of a I feel like this wasn't so much the case in a lot of older media maybe it's because we use cell phones and smartphones all the time. But the timeline of the show doesn't make sense. And I think some things seem to happen slowly while other things seem to happen fast. It seems while Marshall is escaping from the compound at the end, like in that time period it makes it seem like he just went for a drive to the other side of the country, which would take three days. Meanwhile, you know, the pharma company has put out their commercial version of the extract using an apple white space.
And it's now highly illegal and will put you put in prison forever, which I mean, that's got to take a little bit of time. So the time lines and you're kind of funky. What do you think? I think that the level of scrutiny you're giving that is just another ode to how well this story comes together for like this animated series again on adult swim. You know, I mean, so like the expectation of what you're going to get out of one of these animated stories. I honestly, I think that you could probably get through the area that he was traversing in less than three days. So it's, I don't know, a little nitpicky. It didn't take me out of it at all. I mean, the question for the mushroom to come highly illegal seems like that should at least take a month, even if they're really pushing it through, you know. I mean, this did come out around COVID. So I mean, that was being fast tracked in a very similar way. So maybe it just made it. Not in three days though.
I just noticed that with a few recent series that timeline seem to be compressed and, you know, drawn out at the same time with different stories. Well, I mean, if you look at how a series will be like written and put together is that they might sell the execs on that first episode in the first three or whatever. But sometimes you get, you know, halfway in and you're like, uh-oh, like how do we actually wrap all this up? Like we didn't expect to get season one, let alone a season two. So how do we write in a way to transition this into a future seat, which this series, by the way, does have there is a season two for this that is just a direct continuation at the end of, you know, how we see season one come to a close. It was actually released. I had the impression that it's not out yet, although it's confirmed for next early next year, 2027. Okay. So we might have a follow up for this one then. And it's been cited that they're leaning more until in Indiana Jones style storyline for season two.
So I do expect more like rainforest adventure, maybe running into DMTs. I'm almost thinking the max that we saw recently where the max gets to go to like this, this ancient. Very much came to mind when they go to the portal in here. It also made me think a little bit of the head. This does like just feels more like one of those oddity MTV series and it does adopt swim and those were serialized shows, right? So yeah, I would draw the line from there to here and just skip over, you know, the aquatine hunger squad and stuff. I love the end in the final episode in season one. They also show you kind of hinted at this earlier that you can totally overdose on these blue angels. The one guy that overdoses, he basically gets trapped in this cycle of death and rebirth over and over like very grotesque version of it. And I think that's what turns him sort of catatonic is that, but it I would almost assume that at a certain point that wears itself back off, especially if you know how I'm going to do it.
Especially if you know how to come to terms with it. Well, that's where I was kind of thinking about the entities which we see. So we know they're there. If there is a certain amount ofworthiness, the car accident guy wasn't worthy enough for whatever reason. He also went insane from one mushroom, whereas Marshall has done six or seven now, right? And I mean, he might be a little bit socially weird, but he's not insane. If you look at it like working out that every time you can bring yourself closer to the brink of insanity and not go insane and then pull yourself back. It's sort of like working out a muscle that one day who knows if you might need that or not, right? Yeah, yeah. Oh, hey, that might be a benefit of meditation or working out that muscle, you know. Yeah, absolutely. I wouldn't discount that. Do we get through all the characters? Yeah, I guess we got through all the ones that matters. Like who cares about Apple White's, you know, what's a suitor?
I guess specifically we can talk about Socrates, which is Marshall's pet tortoise that he got from Peru. So he also ends up becoming the key to all this. And I don't know if it's really explained that if it's this particular tortoise or if it is any toward like, you know, it seems to be this Peruvian tortoise. Because one character we didn't mention, Marshall's brother, Zane, who is the, you know, Christmas sweater underwear guy that runs a illegal pet store. And the cliff hanger of the season is basically like Zane is importing like, you know, dozens of these turtles. So they're tortoises. So they're going to be able to get a lot more poop out of them. I mean, I like it. This kind of storyline. It feeds into conspiracy theories that are really vague in mind, right? But this is like you actually see one playing out. And this is one that I know for a fact has come up on almost every psychedelic conspiracy theory discussion, right?
Like, oh man, it's they, if you know, there's probably a mushroom out there that could just solve everything. So they take that premise and they spell it all out and they actually create like a really nice cohesive linear narrative for like, all right, well, here's how that would work. And here's all the different challenges that you'd run into. Yeah, I do see where they're like, what, you know, this is tightly plowed to a live action. You know, like I, you could, of course, then you'd stretch out the 20 minute episodes, the 40 minute episodes. And there'd be a lot more shoe leather. I'm sure if you did, I do think this format did work out quite well. And again, I don't know how much Mike judge was involved other than doing the voice and, you know, helping them push the ball forward. But that dry sensibility kind of, it's a, it's a specific form of animation. Hey, it's Ryan C. Crest for Albertsons, Vaughn's and Pavilion. It's time to stock up and save now through October 27th. Well, I mean, honestly, having someone like Mike Judge co-sign this, it does say at least that out of all the things he could spend his time and effort and energy doing, he decided to put his name on this thing. So it is kind of, you know, credentials. And this is, I mean, this is one of like the unfortunate backs, I think, of a lot of these different shows is that there's a whole entire demographic of people that would probably enjoy this show, but would never watch it because it's animated in vice versa. There's a whole like the people that did watch it because it was animated. There's a huge section of them that never would have cared about it if it were just some other random live action show.
Right. Again, I think that's what turned me off from other than the wrong kind of redneck. That's why I never really watched much King of the Hill, you know. Right. Well, like Wood King of the Hill work better as a live action versus an animation. I don't know because there's not a lot of things that happen in King of the Hill that you couldn't just record an live action show, which kind of violates one of the unwritten rules of animation, which is you're supposed to do things that are so big and above and beyond that you couldn't do in live action. Otherwise, you're basically squandering the one big advantage that you have over just, you know, going out with a camera. And that's, but it's sort of like an anti cartoon cartoon. I don't want to turn into this King of the Hill thing, but no, well, another one that we've covered a perfect blue, which is masterful animation. And you can barely come up with the reason for it to be animated. Well, perfect blue though does have a lot of that like surreal dreamy different things going on and like,
you can do a lot of cool main cameras and stuff for that, you know, like, probably why it was adapted so many different times for various scenes of movies, you know, since then. What are some other animations that really that we've covered just I was just thinking that was the one we've covered that most could have been live action, but wasn't playing the paprika no way. Yeah, but then you got animals. So it's easier to animate the animals, you know, yeah, I mean, it's still been CG, but yeah, that's that's what the world means is one of the Disney live action CGI remakes of plague dogs, like a ultra realistic plague dogs. How about your episode note you got anything you really want to throw out on there, I've been saying a lot of the things I wrote down. I think we've kind of like walked through basically all 10 episodes. So it doesn't seem like the kind of show that you can ultimately spoil, even though we said spoiler a few times, but the whole premise again is that guy, like a
like a mycologist finds the cure for everything and now is fighting against big pharma slash DEA slash the world to bring it in his ultimate idea is that he wants this to be free for everybody, right? He wants enough people to be able to grow this that every single thing is cured and nobody dies. And essentially people become immortal and live forever at it. We it hasn't really been spelled out to like the extent of this, but I assume that if you had an infinite supply of these freaking blue angel mushrooms, you could just live forever if you just took one like, you know, microdose then daily big point of the season is that they have a very limited supply it, they gets to like, no, you can't have one because you broke your finger, you know, right by or you just want to trip out I just want to go to the portal man, I feel great. I want to go to the portal portal when I feel great they make it clear that if you take the mushroom and you do not have a health problem that you kind of get more from the portal, right?
Right. So there's, oh, there's a reason for everyone to do this. And I guess one of the other interesting aspects, if they were to just give this over to big pharma and if big pharma didn't immediately mean suppression, but big pharma could scale it out, they would have the resources to be able to make it. So this is no longer a scarce item and that everybody could always be tripping and carrying themselves constantly, right? But they try and fail, they say the best they could do for mass marketing and it is it basically works like Ivy proof and now it's no longer like a miracle here. And probably it's like a delicate anymore either. But I believe that they're also operating because they don't they don't realize that you need the tortoise, the Peruvian tortoise poop and the toxic sludge in order to grow them at scale. I think that's the issue is that they're also operating under these like very limited sort of, you know, supply, I guess. Yeah, of course we do have the opposite the end where a Hilde wants to tincture it right and the other cliffhanger of the last episode is them doing psychedelic ecoterism and it seems they're dosing a city.
I mean, this isn't something the CIA hasn't already done. If you're a fan of, I think it was point Esperit. It was a small town in France where the CIA basically put a bunch of LSD 25 into the town's water supply. Just to see what would happen. So I mean, this is based on things that the government has already done to people. Granted, it was a different government doing it to a completely, you know, sovereign entity, which technically is bioterism like under every single, I think, definition of that. So this version of it though, this almost seems like a good thing, right? Like if you dose the water supply on a mushroom that fixes broken bones and can cure. Like is it terrorism? Like, or did she just actually do something altruistic almost? I mean, it's I'm far from the first person to say, but hey, the next G7 G8, whatever G you have, you know, dose some of some mushrooms and then we're happy, you know. These are one of my favorite theories, but there was one where it's like all of Congress was almost dosed with aerosol LSD at some point in American history and it was like
12 second by can we do in the gang, I guess, ironically. But those are my favorite theories of like Matt, not the government mass dosing civilians, but civilians mass dosing the government. That's, that's like my favorite sort of like, I don't know if you call that like revenge porn, but it's like a psychedelic inversion of MK Ultra. Do you have much of a green thumb? I'm curious. I have a black note. Although you don't need a green thumb to grow mushrooms, but I don't know what kind of thumb you know clean thumb. So these are clean thumb mushrooms are actually incredibly easy to grow. I hear. Yeah, I just I don't know anything about gardening or anything, but a few days ago I did actually do vegetable harvesting and it was kind of exciting. I'm like, I'm just ripping things off of plants and I got two buckets of vegetables. How exciting? Some people like whatever dude that's like Monday in my world, but yeah. Yeah, for a lot of people it is just like a Monday in their world.
Anyway, I was just enjoying some enjoying the charms of the plant, including vegetables I don't like. I got a whole bunch of eggplant. I hate eggplant. Well, it's a good thing you're growing it. Yeah. Yeah. Let's see what else we got here tractor store. Yeah, I just have like weird. Why do I why I black is a good standard scotch? Oh, because he was doing the Scotch. Yeah, I just got random notes here for the most part. There's there's the oh, yeah, I did find it funny when she was yeah, I work at a shelter. You know, no kill shelter. This is a kill shelter. I guess the remaining fun little tangent conversation on this, but is it the mushroom that's doing the healing?
Or is the mushroom just bringing you to this portal and then the entities are doing the healing? That's why I get to aliens. That's why I'm talking about worthiness. Because even though the CEO overdoses on them, the entities also may be like more like, hey, we want to give you your come-upence more than healing. Where is most you? Is it like, oh, you're straight, not straight as in that, but a well-to-do person. So we'll help you out. I don't know, man. I don't know. Do entities have the same moral and ethical guidelines and judgment scale that normal people would have to do with people? Well, they'd have a completely different judgment scale. So because again, the car accident guidance seemed to be like any kind of monster or anything, right? But he certainly had negative side effects from the common side effects. You know what the cure is though? More blue angel mushroom. For that guy, maybe not. You know, it's like how, you know, some people have an alcohol intolerance. They have a drink and they break out in the hives.
Yeah, but I feel like for the guy in the car accident that you're mentioning that that's just because he wasn't expecting the C entities and a portal that so he's just freaking out because he doesn't he'd never considered that there's another alternate reality or like that your perception can be so altered yet you still have enough like cognizance to process the altered signals that you're getting right? Some people it breaks their brain the first time, but then if you slowly come back to when you realize, oh, I guess perception is a fleeting, right? Like what I'm seeing and hearing and smelling and tasting and feeling can completely be manipulated by some external source. They can totally make me feel like I'm in a different place and the some people that breaks their brain, especially if they're not expecting it. And from 1960s up through now, right? So it's only been for the last 60 years that for the most part people even knew that this was a thing outside of alcohol.
A lot of people if they were to like straight up hallucinate, you would end up in an asylum or you would think that you belong in a asylum and not tell anyone about it, right? But at least now like the concept of psychedelics and hallucinations and all this has been so almost ultra normalized that you would at least have like a reference point to talk about it with people. A few years ago is covering this to plug myself it's time enough podcast where I generally covered a twilight zone, but we covered some episodes of a show called one step beyond a few years ago, which is a excuse me, a little bit before the twilight zone, but late 50s and early 60s show similar to the twilight zone, except that all of the stories were somewhat based on true life stories. Like if it was a ghost story, it had to be like at least a nerve and legend story, right? There was one episode called The Sacred Mushroom where the producer of the show in like 1961 goes goes down to South America and tries. And at the time, you know, psychedelic mushrooms were completely unknown in the state.
So you can find on YouTube and really crappy quality, but it's very fascinating to have this guy actually try them, you know, and not really knowing what they are. So in real life, the producer of the show went to South America and did mushrooms in the 60s. I think he might have brought them home with them and then did them at home, but yes, he actually did the mushrooms as part of it. So it's more, most of them are like kind of narrative shows, but this particular episode is documentary style almost feel like that would be proof that he was related to military intelligence, because that maybe that mimics the exact story of Robert Gordon Watson, who's the one that brought the mushroom back to the Western world. And then he he was friends with Henry loose and Henry loose ran time life magazine. He was also in scull and bones in the century club, that's the side the point, but Henry loose became so infatuated with mushrooms that he's the one that came up with the title magic mushrooms and published it in readers digest, I think.
So then overnight every single housewife knew what magic mushrooms were and it was it became like a conversation at the table. Okay, this is like the 1960 version of this. That's like 1950s, I think. Okay, then it's the same timing. So this could be like kind of the I guess the housewives would not have been into the show as much. So this is more for the teenagers and daddy, maybe I don't know. I like it. I'll have to get into it in sacred mushroom. Sounds like a reference to sacred mushroom in the cross, which is like a job book by John Allegro, who was, I believe religious expert. So yeah, I guess I'll recommend that for your doc docs series then because yeah, one thing with the show it's definitely not not a documentary, but it just touches on all those like it scratches so many fun conspiracy points. So we're going to think about wake a little bit too, aren't we? We're going to think about, you know, like a corporate skull, Duggery and all of that.
Where does wake up come in? Oh, I don't know. Always leave a little room for wake. Oh, no, I was thinking of just the botched raid, like kind of being like being being wake host at the end of the series. Okay, yeah, ATF FBI and in this case, the. And a bunch of people die by fire because people made stupid mistakes on both sides really, but hey, if the FBI wasn't there in the first place, then yeah. Yeah, the end really like how sort of visceral the ending of this show is in the last few episodes, but there's like a guy that gets like shot in the face and the forest and. Like it's, I appreciate that this is an adult cartoon, like it's about a very serious topic, but also it has like blood and gore and boring conversations, but also DMT entities. I don't think I'd appreciate this younger if I was like, you know, like I don't know 13 or 14 watching it, but I appreciate the hell out of it watching it as an old man.
Yeah, even late teens, I mean, come on, if you're in high school, I could see this like maybe scratching it, you know, yeah, yeah, but yeah, I guess, you know what those. It's not a cartoon for kids, that's for sure, but. I wouldn't, I wouldn't be disappointed again, I would rather my 12 year old watch this than watch running Stimpy. That's not a dick against running Stimpy necessarily, but it would, I'd feel better about it, right, but I, but I feel like this one. You would have to have so much research and what like Paul Stamets has written and what Terence McKenna has written and like all the different aspects of this show to truly appreciate like how on the money it is about so many of the different little angles it goes into it's not just someone had like a fanciful idea and create a little universe and now here's like an animated cartoon out of it like this. It really could have been a live action series, you know, like a really well produced one, but it just happens to be animated in cartoon and have like a very cool look to it. I don't know if you like the aesthetic of this cartoon.
Yeah, yeah, I actually was, I basically dug the aesthetic. I'm pretty open to cartoon probably because I grew up reading comic book, so it's like, hey, you know, the artist on X went just change it looks different now, you know, okay, some more on the abstract side, it's like cell shaded sort of minimal in terms of like the coloring values, but the characters have like odd shaped heads and bodies and stuff, you know what I mean, it's not not hang on block stylized, but definitely stylized. No, they're definitely like proportioning things some smaller than they should be in some larger and they should be, you know, people and people who get a big head have a big head in here, you know, not as big as the head in the head, but. Anything else you want to throw out on this one. I'm not exactly on a pop this is we don't I mean we usually give a nice little breakdown I think the breakdown on this one was just like the Robert Gordon was in CIA connection the Paul Stammett's and Terrence McKenna angles all of that.
I think that this one is well worth the time it's 10 different episodes in season one there about 20 minutes each so it comes out to like I don't know three or four hours worth of. The material like a movie and you know yeah it's like it's like a it's like a yeah yeah four a bit of a four hours if you watch the Odyssey you've got time to watch common side effects and I would say common side effects is a far superior use of your time then the Odyssey and I didn't hate the Odyssey. I have to wait until weirdly September 11th is a release date in Japan for the Odyssey so we're still waiting on that one they gave a spider man as quick as they could but we're waiting on the Odyssey. Well it's worth waiting for I guess but you could all it might be interesting in watching it in Japanese or do you don't even get a Japanese version until then. No no it's just not it opens in theaters in Japan on September 11th which yeah I'll get subtitles I will see the Japanese subtitles so sometimes when I do see movies in theater especially you know I can read like like there's congears, kata congears here gone I can read all the kata conge here gone a few of the congees so sometimes that you know I can.
Like it's good practice I hear what they're saying in English and then I can see what sub title is and you know do a little do a little learning while I'm watching spider man. Well you mentioned Twilight Zone a couple times so I feel like you should plug your Twilight Zone series. Right that's a time enough podcast we did the entire original Twilight Zone we did the Jordan peel one we did his movies as well as a as a chaser you're on one episode of this peel ones and we're going to be. Entering the night gallery after a little bit of a hiatus so you know if you dig that kind of thing we lot lots of revolving co host chair so there's lots of different perspectives from lots of different people which is hopefully makes the run through the series interesting what's up on your end. Well you mentioned wake up and this kind of has a documentary style to it so I highly recommend checking out under the docs you can just go wherever you listen to your podcast or you watch videos just search for parent American.
Every Tuesday at about 3 30 eastern is a new episode audio video on pretty much all the different networks and every week we break down a different documentary sometimes it's an OG conspiracy theory Jordan Maxwell Astro theology breakdown sometimes it might be a little bit even more mainstream you know like latest whole coke and events like man or whatever. But it's kind of the same concept where we'll give a breakdown of all the things worth knowing about it and then if it's worth I guess checking out for yourself so search for parent American podcast under the docs. Yeah yeah cuz you had your wake up month so like 20 minutes going so what about wake up I was like no this is this guy does this is done all of it recently every single wake up documentary at this point every movie every dramatization I haven't done an episode on every single. But I've seen every iteration that you could possibly come up with I talk I don't want to get too far but I've seen the original papers like from David Kuresh about breaking open the seven seals and like versions that have never even made out into the public before so I'm not an expert but I've definitely seen more than most healthy adult humans that are alive have seen you won't believe what I've seen.
