Good to have your company on the Late Tray for Chemist Warehouse. Save on your prescriptions at Chemist Warehouse and D.D. Say yes, I D.D. Damien Barrett, Brad Johnson with you until 4.30 Melbourne time, Marty Pask, the SuperSub comes in then. Lots to get through today. John O. Toby Green officially as per the opening of Free Agency gets himself to Jolong, Joel Mardi will find himself to Carlton, Kiran Briggs, Richmond and Kelsha Deer in, I want to say, surprising news, staying with Hawthorn. Good afternoon, everyone. That was the surprise. I know we had a discussion yesterday afternoon in regards to Kelsha Deer and what Mardi thought he would do and I sort of chomped in at the end and said, I would I'd depart, I'd go. But made the decision to stay, signed a two-year deal to remain at the Hawke. So, what would have been the Melbourne offer?

Would it have been a four, five-year deal? I'd imagine it would have been. Yeah. Which is interesting. Call, isn't it? You could shout for a couple and see how you go. I'd say double the tenure and at least double the money, too, John O. Toby. That's a big call. It's a big decision, obviously, with where the Hawks are at. Melbourne's in pretty good shape as well for their future, but sticks to it and will compete against four or five others to try and secure a spot in the senior team each week. Whether that, I suppose, opens possibilities around Marbley or Child contracted clearly to stay at the Hawks, but we just know that we've been king coming in and the re-contracting of Jack Gunston, those two guys are going to be playing clearly. And what that means for the other four-line players there, and it may well be that it's a conversation that another club may just have a look at Marbley or Child. It's a watch for the next 12 months. Obviously, we just wait to see where Gunston's at at the end of 2022.

It's a season 27. Of course, he was unbelievable this year. You'd think that would be it, wouldn't you? But you'd think so. We thought at the end of 23 when he came back from Brisbane, we was done. And he's been able to play excellent footy. And so I think that's more the watches off the back of that. If Gunston goes, but then it's a watch on the other four that are competing for possibly two spots that the ones that aren't getting the look in, we may be having a similar discussion at the end of next year in regards to one of them possibly departing. Yep. I know when Marty gets here today, John O'Ea wants to have a good chat about the Merit situations, Zach Merit for a second consecutive season. And the stalemate that is going to be and was at play last year between what the Hawthorne Footy Club is offering and what Essendon is going to accept. And it hasn't really changed all that much in this face at 12 months. This is going to play out. Just Essendon will just play this out right until the last couple of hours again. I don't think it'd be silly to. It would be, but for our own entertainment.

Oh, well, that's a pretty good one. That's several topics. And he's won a seventh vest and ferris in the past 24 hours. Wow. So when you throw that into the mix, it was something that I think was always on the cards, given the, I suppose, lack of competition he's had for that award over the journey. But the professionalism with which he's always applied and was able to do again, despite the disappointment he had, as we know, he's changed management groups from that day of last year, Tom Preturo to Nick Gieci in different management group. And somebody's, he's known for a long time in negation. So I'd be surprised if it dragged out that long this year, just because it's a different essence. And it's an, it's an essence that's making some really nice moves, I think. Nice statements publicly being marked like they spoke at the best and ferris, then, or at least has spoken publicly and publicly and is making nail polgies for whatever it is they're about to go down the path of. They've got John Longmire in and they're just sort of giving the indications now in the impression that they're, they're active and pro active as opposed to trying to stymie moves and,

and maybe just getting there. They're, they're next, or just putting, getting their backs out of, at a line with regards to what happened last year and just putting, putting a statement out when we're not trading exact. We spoke about yesterday, the Richmond footy club and their best and ferris results. When you look at Essendon's best and ferris results, yes, Zach Merritt sits at the top. But third was Archie Roberts, fourth was Nate Caddy, sixth was Reed, seventh was Sharp, eighth was Roby, and ten was Farrow. So that is, that's significant. I think if you're, if you're an Essendon supporter in regards to so many youngsters being able to compete in the top ten for a best and ferris, and Zach Merritt's the watch next year at, at Hawthorne, you know, he's the type of player and, and person that, that will change clubs and could likely take out the Hawks best and ferris in the 2027. Like that's, that's the standard that Essendon are losing and, and Hawthorne are going to gain. Yeah, so Marty's, I think, made some calls on it. He's included a line of sight on how this works and he knows what's at play here,

pick wise and, and play wise potentially. So he'll take us through that. We're also very soon going to be speaking with the West Coast list manager Matt Clark. So they're going to be a relatively active club in this next trade period. You're going to continue your list of analysis and on the menu today, John O. The menu today is GWS Giants to start. Okay. And I've also got, who is after them, Senkilda. So they're the two we may look at today, definitely get the Giants down. So both getting active in the trade period, Marty's metrics will continue. I also want to delve pretty deeply into comments made last night by Andrew Prudham, the chairman of the Sydney Swans and the fact that they held their best in Ferris, which was won by Isaac Haney, one of the band five players. Clearly he had eligibility to win the award and won it. And that's the spike missing the last three games, the final round of the home and away season, then the qualifying final and then the preliminary final. But there's a clear softening publicly of the language coming out of that club,

about those five players. And we'll look at some specific statements made by Andrew Prudham. He's spoken at the last night at the event. And I think he makes some really valid points, but might take on it. And again, I'll read the specifics throughout our time together on the late trade. But the take out is that they have absolutely softened. And even the fact that they kept their eligibility in the award. That's right. And they were removed their eligibility from the Australian. It just goes to show how that has changed quite dramatically now in the space of what is it, six, seven weeks? Yeah, I look forward to diving into that with you. From the season being torpedoed, which it was. And that was his win. Yep, exactly right to where he sits now. So I'm very interested in his approach to the future of Sydney. And the short term future of the Sydney Swans as well over the next couple of months. They all make their way back to preseason. So a look at what Justin Leppich of Collingwood Fuddy Club said. And Lenny Hayes of St Kielder and also Gerald Ruff here to Vatelade regarding Nick Murray and North Melbourne's pursuits of their backline player who is two years remaining under a contract.

But as we do on the late trade, you know, we like to start this way each and every day. The Carva for Tasman Butchers. Eat better meat with Tasman Butchers. Tasman Butchers. The meat specialists. So the Toby Green situation. I know we've now known for the best part of a week after he went public with his decision and desire to get to Jolong. And it's gone through on the first day of free agency. There's a compensation pick that currently sits at number 26 for the Giants for the loss of their either greatest or second greatest player. Take your pick during me Cameron being that other player since 2012. But they've been in the AFL system. It's me there to stand out. Players of that era and they now both will be playing for the Jolong Fuddy Club in 2027. Yeah, it's huge isn't it? It's a big get by the by the cats for Toby Green to nominate them and now find his way to their football club. You're getting a captain from another club. It's significant.

And you know, obviously the type of player he is. He's aggressive. He's skillfully. He brings a certain dynamic to your forward half of the ground as well. So it's massive for the cats to be able to do this. And in some ways you sort of sit there. Surprised that some of the names that we're seeing through the trade period leaving their clubs to go and play their football elsewhere. And that's probably the changing nature. The full stop on my whole mentality now. I'm done like in terms of the if anyone was going to be loyal to their Fuddy Club forever. I thought it might have been Toby Green. Yeah, just because of the type of person that that a year and he gave his all to GW. Yes, I'm not I'm not disputing that at all. But I thought it might have been the last of the group of players that may have just seen their whole career out at the one club. Yeah. Now that Toby's gone. That's it for me. Bang. It's open slather now in regards to my mind and play a movement and and and that's just where I have to sit on it. Yeah, and it's the same period of time too.

Do you know where we're going to see Scott Peddlebury move officially and find himself a Gold Coast after 21 seasons at Collingwood. So I know there's different reasons for those two transfers. But yeah, they're not going to be the one club players that we had long thought they were going to be. Well, that's it. And you know, so that's that's why. Ultimately, that's the competition now, isn't it? And and you know clubs clubs will circle and you've got guys that are well into their 30s now, which is the other aspect of things that are that are moving and getting extended deals, which obviously prolongs their career. They'll be extremely, you know, happy with the fact that they're 33 34 and you rock up and you get a three year deal somewhere to secure your own future and you find actual future as well. Has that heard of? Wasn't that only six seven or eight years ago for someone at the age of 30 to be getting a third three year deal. And there are there are some players out there that are still on the one year deals and there's a couple of the Brisbane lines that have been in that in that facet, but they're not Toby Green level players. So that's just the nature of, you know, where you're sitting your list and and how your side is potentially going at a particular stage when you're in that bracket of 30 to 33 years of age.

Yep. Locky deals another one in that age bracket will be 34 before he plays his next game of football, but his last game of football was was pretty solid. As we said earlier in the week, that being the grand final last Saturday. It wasn't his best game, but he contributed to what was a third consecutive Brisbane lines, and he too will be getting a three year deal to play for Collingwood, roughly a million dollars a year for each of those three years and the compensation that will go back to the Brisbane lines. It's expected that that will be the way it's being purported to play at somewhere in the 40s. So is that right similar rankings, I think, to. Is that more floated out because I've finished top Brisbane finish top, but he's a they bringing the age into this like the fact he's going to get paid well on a good deal. Yeah, but it just seems like yes, I understand the Brisbane side of it where they finish, but the the age component, which I think will be starting to get a little bit tricky in AFL House because all of a sudden you've got 33 34 year olds, you know, potentially getting a million dollars a year.

How do you rate that because of, you know, the aging bodies that that they have? Yep, and then it looked at tell us age is a factor. It is. Yeah, it's part of the three facets. Yep, and then you throw in the different spices as well as we as we know, John. Joel and Marty getting to Calton. Again, there's been a conditioning of that for some weeks now. It's moving into that zone and the Calton 40 Club on its own social media platforms released some imagery pertaining to that. So, Tom wants removed now from Charlie Kuno leaving as the the big full forward and going to Sydney and basically then taking one of the key forward spots that Joel and Marty in the end, John, who could not get back into the team for there was an injury that got him out of the team initially, but then he got himself right really late in the season and was overlooked for selection in those last remaining games because Maclean was standing up. And obviously Charlie Kuno really had he strapped in the in the back half of the year.

Well, that's right. And that's that's I suppose that reinforces the Hawthorne chat in 12 months time in some ways because Joel is the the one of the group of Sydney key forwards that that is suffered. Yeah, suffered. And in the end, you know, makes the decision to to move to the blues, which when you have a look at their lineup from the final. So, McCoy was sitting at full forward. MacGovon was sitting at center half forward with camp on a half forward. Thanks. They already had the three tools that were working well with each other. So, do you rate. A Marty higher than camp and MacGovon. I suppose it's a MacGovon isn't it? I think he had a good season. No, he was very good and camp completes doesn't he? He fixed up some of the specifics of his kicking, but as he said, shot. That's right, but he completes really hard. There's the challenge again. So it's become to retain a spot. Yeah, those guys who got runs on the board and MacGovon when he first when he first got recruited to the blues was playing as a forward and he had a bad back injury.

Try to take a hanger in a preseason game and hurt. He's back really bad and that that holds that he's in. Then he went back back to fulfill and he looks more natural as that as that as that forward. Yeah, really liked the way that he the way that he can move in that role. So there's there's challenges there when you look at the three. Okay, they'll obviously be fighting and normally the new recruit gets the first look. You're drafting him in for a reason. So we wait to see how he goes. And the other element to this one's dynamic there to in the four. I was Logan McDonald who did not play a game of footy in 2025. Then obviously came back for 2026 and got better as the year. Very good finish and had a really it was good as anyone in those final matches that in the fact that two finals they played. He was excellent and you and you're right about McLean like made the most of you know the moment that he got late in the season and was able to clean that one up because he was in and out of the side throughout the whole year. If you had it said to a carton supporter two years ago though that by the start of 2027 in Charlie corner will be having a second season as a Sydney swan and Jolla Marty will be the starting full forward.

You couldn't have got you had a way not not at all. But when all of a sudden you add the name of a Marty into this lineup. The spine strong will get to that you know throughout throughout this period as well. But there they've got a very good side of youth and experience combination the blues which will make them very dangerous next year. Yeah. I like I like like everyone else. I like what they did late in the in the season and go really lit the season up with that come back after Josh Fraser took the reins from Michael Vos. John let's take a break so we can clear the decks for a chat on the other side of it with West Coast's Lisbon Smackluck. Continental tyres AFL Trade Radio. Continental Cross Contact AT2. One tyre for every adventure designed to inspire confidence on any terrain.

Say yes to trading captures for cocktails with D.D. stock up and save and shop half price vitamins now at Chemist Warehouse. This is the late trade with Damien Barrett and Brad Johnson. We're about to talk West Coast to all matters pertaining to West Coast. We're going to do it through the intel and the words of the list manager of the Eagles. Matt Clarke who joins us today on the late trade. Matt thank you for doing so. No problem. Okay. Don't know how you were well. Matt you're at the combine. I'd imagine like every other single football official in the country. Yeah you're saying actually yeah just finishing up some of our last few interviews this afternoon. So big couple of days with the boys and we'll get to see the runner around tomorrow do a bit more athletic testing. So looking forward to that. Biggest season of making that space and also some big decisions to make in the trade space. Jack Vonnie's been one who has got public and all parties are talking quite openly about how that could look. What's the latest on that space please? Yeah obviously Jack will document that he's been up in for a few days.

So a bit more of a presentation to him about us to be fair. So we're trying to sell what he could offer to us as a group. The public government is applying us so Jack's back in Melbourne with the demons of their best and fairs tonight. So I'm sure he'll take a little bit of time to assist what he's been through the last few days. Understanding we might have something to chat about early next week potentially so we'll give him the time that he needs. There may be some extra work we need to do to talk him around. Do you think you've got yourselves in front of his considerations ahead of us? That's hard to know that will be probably up for his management once we've spoken to them and I've spoken to the TGI guys since Jack's return. So we just wanted to know that we could put together a pretty good package for him on field and off field and where he fits into our group. So Andrew obviously has a connection to him three days at Melbourne and Sam Radford as well. So if you're a well place we know what Jack can bring to us for our playing group and also the fully club.

So there will wait to see what hands out the next few days. And what is it that you have been a say to the public that you want to bring to the club via Jack Vaughnny the qualities? We obviously know that Jack is very best. It's football that is at a really strong level. He's a great contest player. It's a great pressure player. We think he can complement some of our younger guys but also some of the veterans we've got on him instead. As it stands right now. So I was obviously one of the better leaders you'll come across. So we think we're filling that space in the last two or three trade views and three eight. We see three of the players who have bought in other clubs from really successful environments. So Jack's definitely one of those. So that's where we sit at the moment. And Matt is it purely from a playing perspective or is there talk around you know staying over and potentially jumping into the coaching space as well? I think there's some potential there John. Jack's obviously if he's telling the world with some local junior coaching this year.

So at this stage we're more looking around what it was like from a playing perspective on field. Honestly bring the an element of leadership that will add to our group that we're sort of we needed at a young emerging group. So yeah that we haven't really dealt with the other space to share that could that that may come when we speak to his management group and him maybe early next week. A couple of the players that have been mentioned as well. A grime eyes and and Trent rivers being able to speak to you now. Is there interest in in those players from the west coast? We've spoken to both major groups about those guys. Probably grind first we sort of touch base. I think James pitcher may have discussed that this morning early in the year as most clubs do and when guys potentially have the team for various reasons. And he's pretty strong that grind came to stay it's a long very low guy really enjoys it there. He's contracted another couple of years so I think that's where it sits at the moment with Jolong. So I don't expect a lot of movement there to be fair but obviously trying to we're both to the front half of our ground to increase our scoring power and our connection.

So one was somewhat of interest there but yeah we haven't had discussion with Jolong. And Trent is another player who's here obviously a WA. We spoke to him pretty good pretty to the team as I've viewed the the premiership player. We could add to where I've had age prior to 25 26 year old as well. So this bit's a player Trent also free agent at the end of next year. So there's a little bit to work through with that. But I know there's complications in complex complexities attached to the Chad Warner pursuit right now. But is it possible that you as a club may be making a meaningful offer in the next two weeks? I don't think so Damien from our understanding from his management group and they've had a pretty strong conversations with Sydney that he's a required player and he's very happy where he is right now. So I don't expect any movement from an hour and will obviously do our due diligence and ask the question about obviously.

Can areas that have played out in the last couple of months but from where we sit right now, Chad will be playing for season next year. Okay so just reload and do at the end of next year what you did two years ago and attempt to get him out of the spawns when that when that contract was up. Should he should he choose to have it play out that way? I think all clubs are probably looking at what every free agent we've looked like a year on year and obviously Chad is one of those. I'm sure Sydney are really keen to have him stay beyond that and they'll be trying to do the same. So we'll assess it probably in the next 12 months. So we're at six but yeah at this day, yeah, you'll fight for Sydney next year and we'll see what happens from there. Matt as you look through the you know the draft coming up as well. You've got pick three on the on the on the table. You've recruited so well right across the field over the last couple of years. So is it just best available when it comes to West Coast now? Is it more needs still within the lineup? Yeah, I think early John Owen you've been in this looking at this free for a while and some work with the Academy boys. You feel like you want to go best available.

We feel like we've sort of done that in the last two or three drafts and obviously the draft before I arrived with Harley. That we may tend to go for a positional need as long as the guys got a lead talent. If there's a slight difference in their talent rating and their different position we may go for position type. So I think that gives us some flexibility in our tree. But life is probably going to be five you would think with a couple of plays aligned in front of us. So I think there's a good group around our peak sort of maybe three to five players in that. And it'll come into the mix for that peak for us. At this stage I think there's some talent that will fill the middle of the ground at that peak. So we're probably able to go that way. You never say never moving the peak. The higher the on life we that we've moved through we think we're going to get a little bit higher that peak as most possible. How do you rate Zaggy Cochran and Cody Walker? Where would they sit on your board? Yeah, pretty high. What's like those? Zaggy is an exceptional young talent.

What's doing wandering around here at the combine. He's pretty relaxed. He's probably along with Cody over the four of the dogs. Probably one of the more relaxed team because you know it's going to be on our list. It's one of those things that keeps them pretty much guaranteed they're going somewhere where you've got a lot of probably got 40 other nervous young fellows walking around. So don't you get an exceptional talent not sure where he's going to end up playing to be fair not by everywhere. So he's got a lot of traits to play there. He's getting taller notting by the default at some point through the middle of the ground and Cody's just showing the exceptional ability to step to the level and he's 5. VFL 40 year and came out runner just over a six minute through K yesterday or day before whenever that was so. I think they're well and truly at the point in there not one or two. They're very close to it. Matt we saw some genuine patches of billions at times last year but it's a long season isn't it for a young group and the high intelligence of read and Dersmer and Shanahan and Dufftitler and Gen B.

You can see what the club is done by way of being those talented players in but it does fall away from a depth perspective doesn't it. So how far away do you feel that the team is before it can complete regularly to to be up there again vying for a position in the eight. I think it's a way to predict exactly I mean everybody will get have some hard luck stories along the way with a bit of injury and those sorts of things so obviously mentioned Ruben Jindy there and you know in the fun to end this year and he didn't really even get to play a game with. Brandon starts to mature and parry ed was as well so the idea was for him to get stars to come in and play alongside Ruben parry and totally young. But I think just like a little bit of continuity I think another pretty saving under Andrew and I'm standing out our game plan and I have to execute that along the periods will be the key for us. We're able to do that certain times as you said with some pretty exciting career times we just when I would execute for four or so when you when you look at the average games where we were rolling out of some like the 23 were well well a lot of the young things like the targets and the moments were sort of in the mid six season.

I think there are 160 or close to 170 games on the field so we're sort of 100 games off that so before we have a couple of seasons away from being really competitive against those top teams we just need some continuity with our young guys and sort of got a little bit of that this year. We want to play every game by one I think Josh Lindy played 15 or 16 could be the top partner saying. Job Shannon here played every game so we're fortunate that those young guys were all helping and living their spot no playing together so more we can do that over the next 12 months that's going to hold us instead. Would you consider any possibilities around Bobby Hill Matt? I mean every club will speak to their management group when we consider someone who's as high and talented or what has been in the down on the biggest stage there is so there's always a question asked and I think it's great to see Bobby's trying to help turn his life around trying to get himself fit so I think it's unlikely but every club will speak to these men and group in our question and see where that's that but it's not a priority for us right now.

You must be pleased as well with the way that you've recruited through the mid season draft as well what the players have been able to do and then the best and fair as a result a couple of them right in the mix inside the top 10. Yeah absolutely I think our recruiting team are extremely diligent in the way we look at everything I think if you put an enormous amount of work into a victory in this draft we put an enormous amount of work in peak one or two in the mid season draft and they can pay dividends so you can see what. Ryan Merrick's been a really good role player, contributed for us for years, maker of service come in through the mid season Tom McCarthy we had at Milan met up coming as a necessary for our best interest as well so I think if we're going to have those going along the way with those players that will help set out least up and just to allow that younger guys to develop a lot quicker we obviously had our extra rookies that we were around and from now I feel last year we obviously didn't see them at that level but even in the prairie and Harry Shaw and Borg that came into well eastern obviously I gave Roberts and it was quite a pretty good point you've been pretty good so just some of those mature bodies are a lot younger guys to develop quicker so yeah the mid season guys have been great acquisitions for us.

Yep Matt Tazzy obviously got access to 700 year olds this year and then they'll have a raft of high end picks in next year's draft there's really a chance you may look at trading some of your future options into this year's draft to get ready for that. Yeah I think so I think most clubs are keen if they can and obviously we think there will be a natural improvement for us next year but I mean there's always an early pick so I wasn't early picking in any draft I think you'll find at the start of this year where there will be some players down in the first maybe 60 late players that clubs may not have rated in the first 20 this year so there will be a phase of merge next year and moving a pick in any serious draft for another high end talent we definitely can do that with our future pick. Now Matty just to finish off as well. Matty past you went us on on the late trade as well we'll be in shortly but he just sent a text through wondering whether you can turn his message so we're borrowed to do a medical ease out a couple of years ago. I actually had to got me about that and I wonder if Matty actually needs that back so I'm going to be coaching around so yeah more than happy to drop by side Matty and drop that off to you if you need it so I might need it for a couple of medical assistance.

I'm not going to wake up. Perfect. Matty appreciate you jumping in having a chat today while you're assessing the future talent there at the the convoiner and addressing all matters pertaining to the Eagles. I appreciate it. Good chat boys. Thanks. Mat Clark there was coast list manager. Maybe to take out of that I think John. Yeah but what I love is just the just the honesty around where where it sits you know obviously with with Jack Viny and the expectation there. Grime Mines Trent rivers what they're looking at in that aspect of things but the thing I was thinking about while Matt was talking was West Coast versus Richmond in terms of the youth recruited over the last few years West Coast youth has played West Coast and Richmond's haven't so that that's a bit of a difference in regards to when we're looking at where we can see the talent you can see jokes. And you go okay there's enough there's enough there's more than you go Ruben Jimi use playing defensively could easily be a midfield year. You know Lins you play to handful of games you can see the talent there that will exactly right and I'm and I'm putting read and Dersma to you know one side as well in that are a big part of where they're where they're going as a as a

fully covered those players that played tend to 15 games they're the ones that you sort of go okay there's there's enough there for their future and that's what we haven't seen with Richmond with Richmond yeah so many boys. Look let's let's take a break and then we'll open up the call line 1323 5548 for any Eagles fans who may wish to expand on those conversations there with Matt Clark or anyone else who wants to talk AFL trade 2026 it's over you 1323 2548 will also take a look at your texts on the I'm a text line so far away and we back to do all of that next on the late trade. Say yes to trading captures for cocktails with D.D. stock up and save and shop half price vitamins now at chemist warehouse this is the late trade with Damien Barrett and Brad Johnson a news update for everything fleet everything fleet car and truck rentals 100% Australian owned and operated and we know where we see something happens this year that's both parties great night we're going in each year and we're able to re-contract Jordy we all know Tasmania is coming that I think we all have a good idea of what's going to happen but then there's other times you're thinking this is a bit unprecedented in a well in some ways where we know what could happen to some players on your list so so yeah so that you know who knows what's going to happen when Tazie coming as well. Very open Justin Leppich of the Collingwood Free Club they're talking all matters but specifically about Jordan DeGaue and the Tasmanian possibilities around what impact it's going to have on all every car bar throughout the next 12 months that was the news update for everything fleet everything fleet car and truck rentals 100% Australian owned and operated.

Do you know we opened up the talk back line 1323 55 48 if you wish to to join it will head there now to Dan in Queensland hi Dan. Hey boys. Hey done good mate. Thanks for taking my call and really enjoying the coverage keep up the good work. Thank you. My question is around the merit one if we if we believe where is that pick 25 and pick 15 the bomber standing firm bit of a two part question personally I I wouldn't like to see Hawthorne give much more as much as he's a great player and could definitely take a spurder just want to just thoughts on that and the second part of the question if all form were to walk away do they have a plan B this year. I'll go with the part B first they can't walk away this year Dan I don't believe is I reckon they could go back and reflect upon the preliminary final and just one day if we had Zach Merritt could we have

got past the mighty Brisbane and I reckon the answer might be yes so that that would be my take on that and the part 80 your question I'm going to ask you to wait about 50 minutes or so I say that because Marty pass has already flagged this conversation for a chat off the top of his time on the late trade today so roughly 4 30 Melbourne time I can tune back in or stay tuned in all the way through of course but tuning specifically to see what Marty's got to say about that because he's got some ideas and he's got some intel to bring so rather than jumping around it without the full information let's wait for Marty on that one thanks for your call there Dan will go to saying Queensland go to Brisbane specifically and have a chat with Kevin Hi Kev. I'll have you could I could have you go there and thanks for your coverage I've got a quick question nothing about the merit I don't think we all should go in for I think we should trade Marvichol from the goi sent him the Colourwood and get him to go to well I would love to sort of I think try and get Jordan to go you know I think it's more the fact that you know if you're going after merit you're not you're not pushing for the going as well and I understand the aspect around what you may be looking at there Kevin in regards to

being so top heavy in the in the forward half of the ground is there someone like a child you can use to recruit another type of big bodied mid slash hard forward into your India club but I think with all chips in on merit that's what they'd love to land as the as the one big one this year Kevin thanks for your call we'll go to Perthnell Jaden Hi Jaden Yeah hey gun boys yeah I'm an Eagles fan just missed the front half of Maclark interview then but I'm just wanting to thought around whether the Eagles should look at future picks so the tazzy draft for immediate improvements for this year Well we asked about that and and yes they're looking at all different sort of scenarios at the moment as the trade period unfolds through to the draft as well because of what will happen next the next couple of years in regards to Tasmania coming into the the lineup and getting the best access to the younger plays in the in the in the junior ranks through the 17 year olds and then obviously the draft picks that they will have as well so everything's on the table from from the West Coast Eagles in regards to position in the

themselves the best they can with Tasmania coming in but keep pick three this stage which I get back to pick five the way that Maclark explain it Jaden thanks for your call a couple of the text messages here on the I'm our text line from Matt do you think the vine acquisition is a good move from West Coast and be able to help in bringing rivers across to the Eagles Perth media have said numerous times this year that you'd only come over to play for the three that said is rivers what West Coast requires well I think I think the viney one is a one of said that from from the outset so the fact that you know he can then obviously try and get one of his teammates to to turn up and and make that trip over to the W.A. and play for West Coast yet why why not have a crack at that as well at sometimes works well if you get a couple together rivers across half back here look he's he's solid he's solid he's sort of you know through the midfield a couple years ago he's very strong tag gone back to sort of half back in that defensive group under under King and then could you get a game there for

well yeah so it's it's dropped away a little bit maybe you know Simon Goodwin his game style suited rivers and King not so much so I think there could be a decision to make you know this text from a number ending six to seven I'm leaning probably more toward this I'll read it easy enjoying the show by the way as as a West Coast fan I'm a bit puzzled by going after viny people talk about having someone to drive standards et cetera but I thought we as a club had already got in that in Baker and Graham to play that role for the younger players what will viny actually cost us that's my concern just a paraphrase and have a similar sentiment to that text out there John Owen that there's only so many of these type of plays you can bring in for those reasons they're going to set the standards they're teaching how to train and how to prepare and how to be diligent professional there comes a time that we might have too many of them and that's I do feel what he's referenced there with Baker and Graham I think he's different beast though viny he's a different beast get ready West Coast if he walks in yep because that's a different level that you're going to that you're going to you

might think you're at a good level now wait for Jack viny to walk in and and see how you're going so you're not a I will challenge the ability from the play good footy I think it'll be missed the whole year I think it'll be the best thing for the man and the fact of the matter is what will the cost not much that that you're getting you're getting a guy of superior quality and determination into your footy club is not going to cost you much yep look there's a heap of texts coming through and they're bouncing around from all sorts of topics I really might take a break and we'll have a look at some of these in the ad break and try and get as many topics to our listeners on the other side of it because they're coming thick and fast and the I think it's involving every single team in some form so let's have a look at these in the office in the in the break and then we'll bring them to our listeners on the other side of it on the later. So yes to trading catches for cocktails with D.D. stock up and save and shop half price vitamins now at Chemist warehouse this is the late trade with Damien Barrett and Brad Johnson Let's we through some text you know they are coming through thick and fast we can barely keep up but let's try and get through as many as we can here first up number ending 411 hey Lads what do we see the dawns doing with the I think he needs that more than anything and I'd be surprised if the the bombers don't allow that move to happen yeah and I'll play your high ball on what he's worth and let's understand what they will but in the day that'll just that that's for the player he needs a need to change the environment I try and get ready and and right I agree next one ends in one two three does this text who will or should Melbourne go after now that they've missed on culture dear.

Not sure not sure who else is out there from a key forward perspective to be able to to chase down and get into your in your football club now if you put your time into dear. Ben is just through my through the head piece here you want to say that they're into a Glockland a VFL player from the Brisbane lines will Maglokland. But I mean there is effectively established as an a felt talent or potential a felt talents. Yeah so and that's and that's a that's a big miss for them in a way we're spoken all week about how we fit into the structure and the type of player that he can be a long side van Roy not going to happen now this is from Caden does North Melbourne have a backup plan in case Murray doesn't get traded obviously going to miss out on Ridley as well and starting to get desperate from the key defender to play alongside Comban. Caden just before we answer that let's take a listen to what Jared roughhead of the Adelaide Cros said today on trade radio about Nick Murray.

Nick's got two years left on a deal. One of those key defenders that you know we've got high hopes in and want want to make sure that we've got good depth in that in that spot. Nick obviously paid some really good footies at the start of this year is a great member of our footy club. So I don't expect to see him go anywhere as I said to you on a footy on a deal left at the footy club and we'd like to see hopefully see that out. Have you expressed that to him that is that is more than like it at going to have to stay. I think with what we've seen with you know the departure on but you know key defenders aren't easy to find and you know we've got great competition there with the boys and we're actually lucky this year with. Probably the depth that we had that we had good coverage right so at one stage all of our key defenders were there we're injured or not in the side so we understand that key depth docs are hard to find and. It's something that you know we won't entertain. It's pretty strong is that I mean we've seen clubs make statements similar to that nature over the course of trade radio.

And then that same play they're talking about still finds his way out but I feel on the Friday of the the puning question in which it's about to start officially that's a pretty strong statement from Jardruffer they're not going to trade him. He's honest as well Ruffy so that's that's exactly what what they'll do is for the LA crows or at least you know push that as hard as they possibly can that's and. And at the very least it what it is doing is just telling off Melbourne they would have known this anyway but if you want him get serious with that don't just try and give us something that you know it's not going to interest hasn't played too much we was coming off the knee wasn't in the year before plan a really good year injured comes back starts the year and then so. This you got to understand then this is why I'd later be keen to to keep him because they know intimately what he's had to do so that probably hasn't worried them that he hasn't. Got back to where that he was when he signed the deal now they'll be thinking that one big summer under him is now got a free run at preseason we know we'll be able to get a Nick Murray back to for the free club and with butts going to the Western Bordogs it would leave them exposed from a.

Yes perspective you know so they've got probably too too many on this year's list but they don't want to lose both of the back at place with what the opposition are throwing it these days they're throwing three keys at you a lot of clubs yeah so the it's important to have that three to four key defensive stocks now they've lost one they've still got the they've got bullies and well bullies and keen so they got three pass a couple of high breads that can play tall or small so Michael any yep and moral so they're the ones that so that's why Adelaide will be so keen yep for him to stay there because of what the up I throw at you Okay let's keep going so Matt contributes this way John O'Neal is exactly what read needs and you like that view well I do a little bit but you've got to be careful as well don't you because you know I think of you know Harley read likes that likes that freedom he plays with a bit of spunk as well there be elements of what Jack can do to help him but you've also got to understand understand Harley read that the player as well and give him that you know freedom to explore it at different stages text or I should say phone number ending nine four nine poses this to make a great final push to the

crow's need to pick up someone like a the go eat to fill that hole on the list it's not the sillier suggestion no it's not I haven't heard the specific link with the go we but we know that they tried clearly to get Zach Bailey through the door and we're very comfortable at one stage with how that negotiation was looking before he decided to stay and last year they had a crack at patraca at one stage they have been others it's it I'm massive on the crow's needing to do something of note and you've made the point to that they should just stop trying to focus most of their attention on S.A.X. Pats just to go just to go over the next best player that they identify again haven't heard to go he specifically but I would make them better it would make them better easily is Jordan to go eat the most mentioned player is in the trade period every year it just seems to be Jordan to go you now where there is in contract whether he's about to come out of contract which is a positive for Jordan because people see him as as the ideal fit for their footy club it just seems every year he's the main guy and Justin Lepid today could have shot it down when

asked the question but he chose to engage again very openly and I love how open he can be at times a Lepid but as he said we we need to we need to test the market on certain aspects and obviously with tazi coming in at each club does need to so we've also heard to most clubs say at some stage whether it be privately or sometimes publicly even that there's nothing off the table if if the right offer is is at least put to the club for discussion you mentioned it about before about getting serious and get serious straight away for a Nick Murray for example well that that's what you've got to do for a player like that to draw him out if you really want Jordan to go he just get serious from the outset don't just ask the question like throw something serious that that gives the pie something to consider is another another Adelaide themed question here from Michael he wants my help but I don't know why pretty disappointed with rough heads comments today after he said the two words that kills Kroes fans optimism and hope to land a good player this trade period and say they are quote organic growth and we are sitting nixie up for fail are we sitting nixie up for failure if we aren't improving what we're going backwards while everyone else is improving we

aren't it feels we had all our eggs in the bailey basket and don't have a plan B or C is pretty frustrating that's according to Michael you can see it sends the frustration there and I share some of it John I but clearly it's hard it's I mean if if they're offering the money that they offered Zach bailey and weren't able to land him it's it's proof it's difficult that's right and and getting someone to leave a footy club that is that has been so so successful and and we can sort of sit there at times and go okay well he's won his flags this is might be his time to go and help another team cash in little beard and get it get it get the biggest deal of his life but ultimately you know he can play this out for the next couple of years bailey so I understand why Adelaide were all in on him because of what he can what he can offer and offering him more through the midfield than what he's getting at at the Brisbane Lions and force it didn't work out yep let's head back to the phone lines now because Stephen from Lonsesthan has given us a call high Steve you know guys are we well mate I support a lot of getting my kid yield and and how you're not cost us much money up here enough

we got to take nine I think and then 26 or 24 something just running what you guys think we should take to we try and get a midfield a backman or a forward well nine and twenty eight is what what you do have in the in the draft nine you're going to the draft we're the council that that will that about yeah that'll bounce back to 1112 we we get all that with what will happen in 1415 possibly as well Neil and Hogan in I'm not sure you're doing much more than than that no the hope will be to get Jamie Elliott back at some stage it may be late in the piece loving given it happened relatively late in the piece but and there's no guarantee that either by the way be given how serious that injury was but yeah they're they've clearly I think that the interest in in Jaden short Justin let bit spike about that today Stephen in fact we might take a listen to that aspect of that let pitch interview earlier today on the specifics of Jaden short no we haven't no I haven't got to that one with Richmond you know Jaden you know his active and that's why he's conscious from Jaden's in particular say he's you know he wants a fresh start but not necessarily

join calling but it's going to be one of those deals at this point in time in a bit more of the harder to do that doesn't mean it doesn't happen but that was Justin let pitch there he didn't totally rule it out John I'm but he he didn't rule it in either and and maybe it's because he's got wind of Richmond warning more than what calling was prepared to offer nine and twenty eight but twenty eights probably not the silliest number to have as a conversation around Jaden short just with where he's at right now but Richmond I think want more than that and equally calling woods I think right now might be keen to probably take that to the draft to use those first two picks in the draft and then to use the lesser ones they've got to to muck around with some points swabs and what not for potential other players but yeah that's that's that scenario there I look Jaden short clearly wants to get out of Richmond that that the way these stories un-unroll before the official start to the trade period that they don't happen by chance and the fact that clubs are now talking publicly and engaging in the

possibilities it means it's a it's a real possibility that he too could be out the door like a lot of other Richmond premiership players have been in recent years yeah well that's right and I still think the that be doing a fair bit of work on the whiteboard the pies just just working behind the scenes I know Lepp have played the straight bat a little bit there in his answer of Jaden short but they'd be doing the work in the background to see whether or not they can secure his services it'd be pretty good pick up yep we're going to take a break on the other side of it we're going to explore the comments made at last night's Sydney Swans Best and Ferris count by the chairman of the club Andrew Prittum and the softening publicly and privately of the feeling towards the five players they banned on the week of August 17 so that to come on the late trade and also Brad Johnson to continue his list analysis series GWS will be the first of those teams today Continental tyres AFL trade radio Continental cross contact AT2 one tyre for every adventure

designed to inspire confidence on any terrain say yes to trading captures for cocktails with Ddick stock up and save and shop half price vitamins now at chemist warehouse this is the late trade with Damien Barrett and Brad Johnson body press bringing in white chocolate muffins yesterday via sharnies baking and today there's a combination of rocky road and Mars bar slice Jonno oh Mars bar slice and you grab both it is my favorite of all time I'm in a double Mars bar slice that is my number one right there and now keep him on the late trade long as he keeps doing that he's one is over now he has and he's not not that far away from joining us in the in the studio to discuss the Zach Merritt situation and also some other questions are coming from the iMAXX line relating to can clubs trade the picks they get for compensation I'll leave all those specific questions to Marty but as we said Jonno

off the top of the show together I was at Kenny winning a third consecutive Sydney Swans Best and Ferris last night now he was eligible to win the award he didn't attend the award nor did the other four teammates of his who were suspended by the swans but those are choice they made to not take away the focus of the season itself but comments made by Andrew Prittin at the at the night itself I just read some of them and this is just a taking a part of a wider and longer speech when you this decision to suspend the players would weaken our on field prospects but we believe this was the right decision as we have a responsibility to use our privilege position of influence to demonstrate to the millions of people who look up to and support our players and many in the room tonight that this behaviour was not acceptable so there's one reference to the decision to suspend I'll go on and this is a fair bit later after that firstly their eligibility in tonight's count is not an endorsement of what happened so there's an irreference there that it's interesting too this interest this interests me from a club perspective conduct and performance are separate matters

the sanction that stood them down dealt with their conduct the medals awarded tonight acknowledge on field performance across the whole season a raising a season of football after the fact would in our opinion be an inappropriate and excessive sanction now I agree 100% with that particular statement I'll just continue this but last one as this matter plays out we will ensure that the players are supported by the club treated with fairness and we will meet out punishment we're appropriate but we must begin the process now of healing and we're looking for depositively engaging with them all again soon in the period between now and the preseason so there's clearly a softening of dramatic proportions here do you know in what this club is now about to do with these players and what it did do back in the week beginning August 17 when it had the magnitude of the decision to suspend those players at that stage for the remainder of the season which was the final round round 24 and then the subsequent qualifying and preliminary final matches that they

played but the fact that they were allowed to be eligible for the best and fierce last night that contrasted with what the AFL did in taking out of the team that had been selected unofficially that did include and I've been told this Chad Warner, Isaac Keeney and Nick Blakey those three names were taken out of that team I believe on the back of the selectors asking the AFL to have the right to do so it doesn't line up with the fact that they'll then eligible to be given votes in the battle I'm middle and obviously then be eligible to win in Isaac Keeney's case the Sydney Swands best and fair so this story has changed it will continue to change and at the core of it is a Victoria Police investigation into it and that is that remains the key part to it and of all the parties concerned but from a Sydney Swands football perspective with Andrew Prittams words last night they're all going to be given the chance to to start preseason training should they so want I think the the biggest part in in all of this I think and I think it even

probably in somewhat maybe surprised Andrew Prittams is how quickly the club galvanised off the back of what what had happened and what I mean in terms of that was once they made the decision to give the players a ban from a football perspective and I'm talking purely football football perspective that the the whole club led by the president the CEO the coach and the captains just brought it all together with the W with the staff with with everything and they became this galvanised group that I hadn't seen for some time within the within the the Sydney Swands because they they weren't just men and women and staff they were a whole club and that's why they became so dangerous in the in the final series we so the matches that followed the the nighting question they had just beaten Essendon in round 23 they then smashed national belted North Melbourne and smashed him that may well have actually been a component to the

subsequent sacking of Alice their clocks and the way that match was so bad from a north perspective and then they had the week off like all clubs did at that stage who had qualified for the high end ladder positions and then came out and beat the ultimate premier Brisbane lines and destroyed them in a qualifying final at the SCG and then and then what happened in the preseason final was we're so good I said a ground level for that game 28 points up against the other grand finalists they were flying Maconini drops one on the on center wing aimers kicks a special goal young has to kick a special goal on the siren they get beaten by special goals Bolton kicks one just after three quarter time and then boss kicks one from the boundary the don't argue on rampia like their special goals that cost them a place in in the in the grand in the grand final but we spoke to Tom Papley prior to the prior to the prelim and we spoke about the fact that how is this club more more together now and he couldn't have been more open and more you know up front in regards to the the fact of the matter is that what has happened has brought

everyone closer at the Sydney swans as the as the complete club so now yes they they start again in a lot of areas but ultimately you could see what the the club and how powerful the whole club has become now and and that's hopefully something they take into the into the future and and it's still got to be navigated when the players and what players return and that that's that's another stepping stone that they will have to overcome but ultimately I think Andrew Prittum now has has summed it up perfectly in regards to where they were where they currently are and where they where they need to be you know in the short term future it has changed dramatically and and John I was you well know there there are words publicly and there are words privately in every situation that we discuss and privately the loudest noises about unrest have come from people around Nick Blakey all that people work out what I'm saying now that these people don't want to go on record at this stage but up until some days ago they there was still a a feeling of unrest

about certain aspects of of certain treatment now time has clearly already changed perceptions on this matter I mean look at Andrew Prittum's words there last night compared with Andrew Prittum's words in the week it happened when he was brutally frank and used the phrase we are prepared to talk to torpedo our season in this decision but last night conduct and performance of separate matters distancing the actions of that night with the actual performances of the players in question prior to that moment so and that's a conditioning component to this football club saying that these guys are going to be given the chance to come back and if we just spoke to Matt Clark from from West Coast who had meaningful conversations with Chad Warner two years ago and he just all but ruled out any possibility of Chad Warner breaking that last year if he's contract with the swans at in this year's trade period so he's got wind of that as a as a club so looks I'm reading into that Chad Warner is going back without any further consultation with other clubs to play for

the swans next year well you feel like they they'll have a point to prove to to everyone in the in the footy world but in particular their own football club all aspects of that football club and and that includes the supporter base as well you know some stood at the best and fairest some say seated so you know you have a one everyone over yet in regards to where things sit from the from a from a football perspective on the little bit of vision that that I've seen so you know that that probably says a little bit in itself you know from from where the return looks like and and how open the return will be it was one of the biggest stories of the year it's going to continue to be a massive story and as we keep saying John I know simply because it is the fact that the Victoria police hold the hold the the passage of this story in their hands and there's no timeline on that we know that the trade period officially starts Monday the next week it runs to the following Wednesday Wednesday week from that point in time and the unlikely hood of the

Victoria police investigation being wrapped up in time for that trade period to be concluded is is is in play so any decisions are made from the football side of it are going to have to be made outside of of that and and as such and and with what Andrew put them said last night a clear change with how this club is prepared to present publicly on what happened on that night of August 6 17 yep all right let's take a break John we you on the other side of it we'll have a look at the GWS Giants list as part of your list and Alice was this we will do that on the other side of this I got it out I got it out okay late trade for Kim is where us continental tires AFL trade radio continental cross contact AT2 one tire for every adventure designed to inspire confidence on any terrain

say yes to trading catches for cocktails with DDA stock up and save and shop half price vitamins now at chemist warehouse this is the late trade with Damian Barrett and Brad Johnson a news update for Victoria police put yourself forward for a career at Victoria police the players are really valuable player for us and I spoke before about that sort of young core group that was brought in over the last four years we've gone to the draft and then adding a little bit of experience last year but he's been part of our futures he contracted players so now that was that was news to us and and even to the point where our list management crew reached out to his management yesterday and says that that that certainly is incoming from us so we're really comfortable with Matthias we think he's got a really broad future at the footy club Lenny Hayes of St. Cudah footy club earlier today on trade radio speaking about Matthias Philip who so a player who's far from fulfilled he's talents John I give him the high draft pick that they got him with and the the um look it's mostly unharsh but the lack of impact he's

had to this stage but he's still a young player and someone the science are going to be continuing to invest in well that's right and they they have to and there's been an improvement in his performance but it's probably still not at the level that St. Cudah would like but in particular I don't think I think he knows that it's not quite there yet so you can't be sort of sitting there and blaming others he probably understands that he's got the work to do he's got experience in his family at at AFL level as well so they they know what's what they need to do let's head to this now John the list analysis for world 360 rewards while the club's trade players for a premiership you can trade every day spent for travel that's world 360 rewards travel is the points GWS is the team you are going to be pulling apart today the way you do on late trade as per your analysis under certain categories the engine rooms the first one it certainly is a Clayton Oliver in introduction to the engine room and and had an excellent year when it becomes comes down to performance on the field Josh Kelly is one that they would love back in the engine room I think

obviously missing with the operation that he had to undergo with these with his hip so the return for for Josh Kelly becomes an important one for them Callahan of course Tom greens the other one that they'd love to get back into the engine room and what he can produce and I think one player that they're going to throw into the engine room more next year if he remains healthy is Brent Daniels so that's that's the one that they want as that sparks mark the caveat on that was if you're remain healthy unfortunately yes that's the key yeah doesn't does it spot on he's been hampered so many times and he's a still short time in the game the spine the spine is different this year up for to lose anyway well it it certainly it certainly is up up forward so Sammy Taylor is the is the main one you know down down back but then just hope he doesn't do a hamstring that evisiting gaming no that's right and I had him will burgl there because you know you sort of go okay well he's probably the one that that you need to then you go then you go Tommy green Aaron Aaron Cadman Jack Buckley to down back or well yes actually yes but I suppose I always

I always see I always see Buckley next to Taylor so that's probably in my mind where where I see where I see him sort of you know standing and then Grasovsky's the other one as well from a spine perspective so young young young spine up forward whether they can you know get it done or not but Sammy Taylor is obviously critical to that the kids how do they look got the kids of cadmium Grasovsky Fonte who improved this year Thomas is another one with Jones so you know the the smaller brigade but they they can get the job done and go anguant and out as well who had a bit of footy this year so he and he showed enough that he's got a future in the in the game well I know the captain given the captains now walked out on them to gelon they do to be green and Tom green as long been rooted as that but do you see him coming off a knee rico being that person now that Toby has gone I think it's a that's a big decision in a way and I think Tom's the only one who can answer that coming back off ACL whether he wants the responsibility straight

up or just get back in place and fully and see where that ends that ends up the other one that is always thrown up his conor item so here's another one that they that I know they love internally and what he does from a leadership perspective so he's one that may get an opportunity in the short term to to captain the club when you look at the game style day mode it's all about always has been everyone mentions the orange tsunami so you know that and that that I think in a way has become a tiny weakness for the footy club because the opposition they know what they they know it's a plan for now they they can absolutely defend the the tsunami so then it's then it makes it more difficult for for GWS to get the the game on their terms but she their best was good this year because that when they attack in waves like they kicked 166 points again six points against Brisbane and 14 goals in one quarter that's right and to win by 78 and they defeated Frio by by 21 so when you look at who they how they win against the grand finalists you go okay

but now they lose players so that's going to step back in in 2027 I'm not sure they get the W against those sides but they're coming off of by their standards a low base to having missed finals well that's right I'm most more a person now I suppose that is that is now exited that that footy club because you've got Hogan Stringer green bricks and and possibly with you as well starting players are departing the departing the footy club the green light is the the midfield talent which has always been the case cadmins development and I think Brent Daniels will be a massive green light for for them next year the red flag is just the forward line uncertainty because Grosseski shown a bit cadmins shown a bit but they've had a couple of other players and recorded yet to take the season a season a party's not ability has any it doesn't he and and has shown and now he's going to have responsibility to to perform every week. Yep exactly right and then the the biggest decisions are around coaching support

obviously lost a couple of assistant coaches will get a couple in name escapes me I think I read earlier that someone maybe from W a is has been appointed as assistant coach I'll get that one for you and basically that's that's where it sort of sits I think you know the explosive midfield depth and all those sort of things they'll try and you know uncover again in 2027 but ultimately I think the main aspect of their football club now is the coaching support and how how that's how that looks especially after speaking with Jason McCartney or listening to Jason McCartney earlier this week around that's one of the most difficult and challenging aspects of their football club is getting people to come and it is and coach and has been for a long time and as they go through a transition period of the captain leaving and the CEO Dave Matthews who was there from day one also going to still a relatively fresh look at the board level two with a new chair as well so a lot of transition for the the giants and John O'Neill there has just pulled apart the list and Adam Reed is the assistant coach that they have just appointed for 2027

and John O'Neill as you were talking officially Collingwood has submitted the paper work to secure Locky Neill and as an unrestricted free agent he will join the pies as we've now known for some time on a three-year deal and Brisbane will be receiving quote band three compensation which in layman's terms is currently sitting at number 39 of the national drafts order that's all part of the the Neill move to Collingwood so for for pick 39 going back to Brisbane lines is band three it's a phrase that you've heard over the journey and Marty Pasco will be joining us on the other side of this break on the late trade will take us through what that means from his perspective and will also be delving deep right off the top of his time today on the late trade on the Zach Merritt situation so we'll take that break now and reset with the Supersub Marty Pasco next Continental tyres AFL Trade Radio Continental Cross Contact AT2 one tyre for every adventure

designed to inspire confidence on any terrain So yes to trading captures for cocktails with DD stock up and save and shop half price vitamins now at the MS warehouse this is the late trade with Damian Barrett and Brad Johnson and time to introduce as always at 4.30 Melbourne time on the late trade in 2026 Marty Pasco the Supersub Marty good afternoon what to get through good afternoon gentlemen I've loaded you full of chocolates so we're ready to go for an hour and a half now we're up and about now Jono's had four pieces of Mars Bar slices in the last 20 minutes and coffee as well so look out yeah I needed to get you up I needed to get you up I'm not swearing at you guys there Marty with teased this topic since we got together today at 3 o'clock Jono and I Zach Merritt it's Grandhog Day in the he wants to get to the Hawthorne 40 Club and the S and then response to the Hawthorne offer no thanks we need some more so just take us through

what happened last year take us through what's happened to this point of this year and take us through I think more importantly what you think Essence should be doing given they've got the capacity here to be a massive player in this trade period well they do so no doubt there's no point sitting back and waiting for things to happen I think they've got a really good opportunity to be proactive because ultimately Essence and Campy holding a player that wants a fresh start for two years clearly the issue is longer the drags out they need some clean air as a football club we heard Jon Longmeyer speak yesterday so brilliantly about just resetting getting the club going forward so the sooner they can get this done the better so last year you look at the the way it ended a 2025 final offer it was reported it was pick 9 22 a future first and Henry Hussway that was the I guess at the death knoc of of trade period last year that was that was mooted and again just to recap we covered this in real time last year and that I felt was a pretty fair deal from Hawthorne's perspective given they didn't have a lot of currency and given the

age and stage of exact merit now we move a full year ahead and the offers simmer but not quite as good very understandably and look a year on turns 31 26 the first offer reported last night so our 2026 trade period offer so pick 15 25 and a future third now I'm led to believe that future third could possibly be 2028 as well so a fair way away so I reckon that again a pretty fair they're the numbers those numbers you've just rattled off their money they're attached to the Hawthorne draft offerings for this year 15 25 and 27 of their first three picks in in this year's draft as it stands they'll be put all pushback but that's as it stands so I feel it's about right yeah and look it's it's just now whether or not and look we'd all feel 12 months we'd all have a sense that it was going to head this way you've you've felt you know so it's just the whether or not now essence and had the opportunity or still do have the opportunity to be a bit of a disruptor

and you know I look back and I even remember when I when I had a deal back in 2018 when Chad Winger wanted to go to wanted to go to to Hawthorne ironically enough and Ryan Burton was the player that I was looking after Ryan at the time finished fourth and the best and fairest just had the number five given to him off Sam Mitchell and Jason Cripps extracted him out of Hawthorne and it was part of the chance we got he did yep and Brian Burton had no thought whatsoever of going to port out of like but in that two weeks it's a boy to it was a boy yeah and it just shows you so there's opportunities there no doubt and look I know acid and they had a they had to go trying to get whettled that a go trying to get no maraz but whether or not you just keep going you looked at some of the players that that have been reported that were out of contract this year and you look at Kelsha dear you know was there an offer there to turn his head and and try and get him out looked at Bailey McDonald I mean didn't he come on so you miss out on wettled do you go and get the next

best thing with a Bailey McDonald and and try and get him giving his age profile and speed everybody loves speed in the modern game and then even someone like a Sam Butler you know four and a half pressure you put him next to Kako he looks good in there he'd look good in their four and a half because again ground ball wins pressure a four and a half turn over that's what the modern game is all about so whether or not there's some just great opportunity just to be a disruptor and just not sit there and say well hang on a minute let's not make it easy for Hawthorne either and get in there and start having those conversations and now I know we spoke about they're not necessarily a club that can sell exactly what they're doing and there but now they've got some really good pieces they've got some good pieces they've got mark they've got spike McVeigh they got John Longmeyer I mean if you don't love the Brent Prisball Brent Prisball head into bowman so just because it's a no now by Monday it could be a meeting by Wednesday next week it could be an offer but it just don't know and I just know for my 16 years of experience in the industry I've seen a lot of things go where players will be know at the start or we're not doing this but if you just keep going and you keep

looking at it and you give them an offer and an opportunity because you can't honestly say that some of these guys will be playing ahead of where they are and I heard you talk about at driving in Domingue yes Hawthorne need Zach Merritt so that's the other piece to this so there's actually a fair bit of bargaining power for Essendon as well because we all saw preliminary final and I think we'd all as football judges even the amateur ones would say well Zach Merritt in that side makes a bit of a difference so when all of a sudden you're thinking well if you want to get this deal done we want that player and it would just change and just got the great opportunity to be a bit of a disruptor and I just feel that whether or not that's a different take then just necessarily sitting there and taking a future second or whatever else because you've got compromised drafts coming and whether or not there's just some some good young talent in the age profile of speed 21-23 that you can just say well look we're going to give them an offer that turns their

head and try and extract them do you think Hawthorne would be up to letting go a player like what you're talking about and they seem to say no to all their players so but I agree with what you're saying because they're going to get Merritt in for the now and this is the now for Hawthorne the next couple of years right there a chance to to play in a grand final maybe maybe win one so Merritt is that so do you actually contemplate losing one to gain the one you gain the one you want I'm not too sure they just seem to say no to everything but ultimately you're right it may be because what's coming back their way hasn't been able to entice will turn the head of of the player because what you what you're getting with the Merritt deal is an opportunity to play a grand final there's no way this Merritt deal it'll it'll happen won't it well it it it can I say is there a world is there a world where it doesn't happen again oh yeah it's yesterday so if a world doesn't in the world it doesn't happen as much as I know Zach wants to you know obviously get to the Hawthorne 40 Club it's

not it's a fresh start for everybody at that at that club now I know that's not the outcome that he wants because he's obviously wants to leave and get the success of a of a premiership in the last or at least attempt a premiership in the last aspect of of his career but it's not an out disaster for Zach Merritt now it will I mean to your point I mean the way we talk on trade road the way we analyze situations it it it will go down this year it will go down the fact that there's been a club statement which they didn't even have last year but there has that been acknowledged when he he won a best of Ferris last night and there was just no talk about him being there next year so it's going to get in that path and I think to your point Marty that the difference of mindset now with John Longright at the head of it I mean he we spoke to me a say on this show as you and you were part of it he wants to get inside that club and sit down and talk to everyone who wants to be there with him and Mark McVey and and Zach Merritt doesn't want to be there and I'm not going to put words in John Longright's mouth but that's the last thing he wants a good a disgruntled player absolutely be part of the mix in year one of that regime well you know it has changed as well players departing

clubs and going to the best in Ferris five months ago no one was going to best in Ferris is leaving now all of a sudden everyone's leaving and still turning up to what do you want to say good bye so that means the where the competition is just acknowledging and getting and conditioning getting better at it the fans are as well and you know we're seeing shifts all all the time Zach Merritt this year Locky Neal you know third in Brisbane's best of Ferris not not going in you know goes to the best of exact butters goes to the best of Ferris like they all yeah turn up but and that's the key point it's a competition and and there's a there's a there's a big part of me that last year watching what St Kilda were doing and causing that disruption too in terms of trying to offer money getting players out doing all those like sometimes you've got to look at it a little bit differently now I just look at I just look at that and I just feel that whether or not if you shake a tree hard enough here that they could just get a really good player and turn their head to complement the fact that I feel that pick 15 is going to be the hallmark of the deal it's

going to be the centerpiece but whether or not there's just something that they can get that can really help them and while you're on there soon then what is it you deem to be the right compensation or draft pick number for Ridley Ridley well look at the moment of future first we've been widely reported was tabled by Jalong so a future first I mean Ridley injury you know consistency with these with playing at the moment I think that's a more than fear offer first up I agree with you and important too because Essenden could be in a similar situation or port out of late because they've got a young man by the name of Kobe Buick who's the son of Darren you know the the former great Essenden player and you just look back at his futures games a future game a couple of weeks ago weeks ago in the under 17s two goals 19 disposals so he's looking like he's going to be somewhere near that pointy end of the draft next year tracking to potentially be one two or three well I wouldn't say necessarily quite there but yeah but high but high yeah and look with

the Tasmania players going out of the draft and potentially you know again that could be that could be something that that could very well happen he's got the talent but with that I just think future picks for them is going to be really important so I feel that was a really respectful offer from Jalong and something certainly to be certainly something that you'd be considering absolutely so it has it has it has it next year's just a strolled in there they're early on they've got all the odds one three five seven nine eleven thirteen yep so all the sides that will finish in the bottom four land in between all of those yep yep okay so you can see what muddie is bringing to this show this year just what the way footy clubs can approach certain scenarios and obviously there's draft pick collateral for escendor in the eventual loss of both Azak Merit and Jordan Ridley and how that looks and how they probably need to in the eyes of many people in the industry get going this year before the as John I was just alluded to the full impact of Tazzy coming in next year they've already got the best 17 year olds from next year's draft they've

been given access to them officially and they'll then complete that list composition project next year with those picks that John I just read it off muddy let's take a break and we'll also be having a look at your muddies metrics before the the close of play today and on the menu today which says the mind would the mighty pies might be some interest in that yeah absolutely and they have today officially landed the player one of the players that they were were seeking to that being locky kneel and at this stage Brisbane Lions were received pick 39 as part of that compensation so time for break now and all trade period we will be following players finding new homes for Seek for the best job matches Seek and you shall find download the Seek app more trade radio to come Continental tyres AFL trade radio Continental cross contact AT2 one tyre for every adventure designed to inspire confidence on any terrain

say yes to trading captures for cocktails with Dd stock up and save and shop half price vitamins now at chemist warehouse this is the late trade with Damien Barrett and Brad Johnson a news update for everything fleet everything fleet car and truck rentals 100% Australian owned and operated fish all opening free agency 2026 it happened today it goes into all next Friday October 9 and players are moving clubs officially as of today locky kneel Toby Green will get to those two specific in a moment but also as part of the news update for this hour Kiran Briggs has signed with Richmond the Giants will receive a third round compensation which is currently pick 46 for loss of Kiran Briggs there to the Tigers and then as per Tom Morris reporting Jamie Graham will be presenting to the North 40 Club tomorrow as part of the coach search and Tom also reporting that Hawthorne has twice in the past two days or recent days according to Tom twice

up the offer hard to Kelsha dear which ultimately saw him choose to stay which was the suggestion of you Marty Paschik couple of days ago and to say no to the Melbourne offer romance pretty happy with yourself that aren't you in regards to just nailing the Kelsha dear should stay romance John are you romantic man yes I've changed though yeah I know you were gone you were gone you were gone get out the Casey now um cut the days ago Marty you you felt you were pretty clever telling us how the the compensation formula worked for free agents going to other clubs and you told me to take off my cynical hat and my skeptical hat and tell me that it was this purely scientific and every single decision was based upon raw metrics and here we are today I can tell that you've even now come around to this secret herbs and spices theory that I've long had since David Noble first used the phrase I reckon 12 13 14 years ago whatever it was so lucky Neil goes from

Brisbane to Collingwood and the Lions get to quote band three compensation which is pick 39 Toby Green same thing band three giants did you long and that's currently pick 26 Joel the Marty band three currently pick 36 and Kiran Briggs it's currently pick 46 so you can't tell me that there are not secret herbs and spices attached to all those compensation numbers oh look David I just came with optimism I was absolutely thought you know what I'm going to say age of player average guaranteed players contract lengths you know six points for three years go outside touch my toes do everything I needed to do you felt like you knew should have got a first round compensation for Brisbane I just don't understand how close to a million dollars which is what it's reported that is at the absolute top end of the competition we're talking 58 players or thereabouts earn a million dollars or more in the competition so I just it's it's a scratcher

from it's a head scratcher for me that you're offering somebody I feel you got a park I get ages part of the compensation but we're talking at the very high end of earning now I wasn't saying that they necessarily should have been pick five and pick ten or anything like that but end of first round compensation or I just that's a that's a big gap I just feel that's because of where the clubs the clubs the clubs currently sit in regards to their second round picks that's what creates the disparity in in the value here because you've got Locky Neil where Brisbane get 39 off the back of their 38 and GWS well they've got they've got 26 but you can is that right in my right with the way that I described that well band two was end of first round pick now I would have thought that no saying their band two players not band three that's my I don't think you can argue with that that that was the NFL officially has and it's that's that's to my point that they

can do whatever they want to do and I've said this for as 12 years and you've argued with me off air as well Marty yes I've tried to they they can do whatever they want to do at any given point in time and tell us that there's a metric attached to it but so what's wrong then Damien in a perfect world where if you send a memo out to clubs and you say to them right average contract points for age percentile of earnings all that sort of thing so then why I just don't understand why it is secret so then why then don't you put it out into the spreadsheet because we're required and then when where it sits and you provide the receipt to the club it would then require the revelation of what the players earning which the NFL will never have and the players association won't ever sign off on that so the actual wage the players are getting is the is the core elements but there's there's there are ways around that there are we dance around it we dance around it and we talk about he's in the top 10 percent on his club or he's there's 12 players getting more

money we dance around at Marty and we don't ever get specific on it like they do in other sports around the world where it is easily explainable and validate it and you can then debate it because it's real because we know what numbers we're dealing with we just we just hide behind it but it's out of whack because Karen brings band five currently and they get pick 46 g w s you've got million dollar players where it's 39 and 26 right it's it's so I mean look at you really so close to Karen Briggs in terms of yeah the the the competition number here well that's a bad whack but like okay so then like let's put free agency aside and I know free agency it's not designed to necessarily always compensate the club in actual fact but if if Locky Neal was up for trade right now what what would you be thinking what would you be thinking if you were well he was up for trade effectively wasn't he calling would just be the highest well no he was going to take the highest number well Locky Neal was an unrestricted free agency so he can leave but let's say but he was up for trade I mean he's been traded or he's leaving his club I know you know you're getting

the right but if I was a club and I was trading Locky Neal and there was and say free agency wasn't in play yeah what would you be saying would you easy it's a first round pick every day okay I get where you I get where you're going with that do we have to set it now then like because the by the time all this is done and dusted before draft night I'm I'm I'm just do that before you go before I mean he's going to be 34 before he plays each next game 40 I don't know whether you would naturally get up a first round pick maybe if you wanted him you you committed to that but do anyway I just I just saw that yeah that's okay but we have to set it do we have to set it now because the the draft picks are going to change all all over the place there there might be some swaps with picks and bits and pieces so does it does it need to be paused until everything sort of set and then that and then it comes in because if you bring yourself up the draft or you do some things that that allow you to do that and get you in a better position then maybe the compensation sits a little bit better with us all no I have to read has to be assigned as right now yeah yeah

because we had a I think we had a period where it was it's still going to be a band 3 but that band 3 might look a little bit better but what does that even mean John I mean I know Marty will have a definition of what band 3 we know we know we know what I did just it just it just creates the whether it's an end of first round second and whatever is we we know all that it just might sit a little bit better with us but it's at the end of it all again I'm imagining some of the secret herbs and spices that have gone into the locky kneel adjudication have it that well this team has made four consecutive grand finals how would it look if it if they got a as you suggested they should a first round compensation pick for someone who they've chosen not to keep on their list basically for the distractions that he's caused and the desire for him to go and pursue the biggest man and money but then but then but then later position as well like well but then but that's not part of it John I'm officially but but it is but then it is on the back of it yeah but then it's secret herbs and spices but then if you have that discussion then what about Toby Graen he's all Australian captain he's all Australian he's been the face of the club for 15 years

and it's an emerging market I mean it's not like they're littered with the coming to it where's the emerging market coming to it but that well the emerging market they need to be attracting good players to help them and help that club in terms of what if you look at okay I understand that argument but how does that how does that getting incorporated into compensation for free agency the same way that you just suggested how would it spice how would it look with the Brisbane lines when you talk about that it's the same argument but two days ago you were telling me it was done scientifically and it was done on metrics and now you're clearly conceding that they can come in with my towel between my legs because I genuinely thought I met that memo when we're doing the quiet doing yeah I met that memo since the fish the fish are coming with me the money but I just I I hear you but I just that I'm your way of thinking is always been around that and I know I've known you for a very long time I've had no reason to stop thinking that I know you ever I

know and I know that and I've always been the one that's always tried to turn you around say no hang on Damien like there there is the good in this I can understand it I think the easiest thing to do is just to scrap compo altogether incentivise clubs with list manage with with with cap space and encourage them to spend and I think that probably just solves everything because all of a sudden you'd be fearful of the club that loses one free agent says well now I've got this I'm going for that and I'm driving the price is that what we've got to do and to give you your credit on this argument to close it down today on late trade you said that the year they introduced for your agency I think I did as a player agent yeah I did I did absolutely because this is where it gets to this is where it gets to it compromises picks fans are confused now it gets to the point as well it's just layer upon layer upon layer of you know masking over stuff or trying to put the band aid solution on rather than a solution that suits yeah absolutely all of that okay you are

going to take a look at one of those clubs involving that conversation calling woods via the muddies metrics system on the other side of this break muddy brew it shining a light for nava australia's trusted transport lighting partner delivering confidence reliability and performance for over 65 years continental tyres AFL trade radio continental cross contact AT2 one time for every adventure designed to inspire confidence on any terrain say yes to trading captures for cocktails with dd stock up and save and shop half price vitamins now at chemist warehouse this is the late trade with Damian Barrett and Brad Johnson muddies metrics for MEGT every winning team starts with the right recruit higher in a Francis with MEGT and get $2,000 back a little bit fire here in the late trade studio on this

day five of 2026 trade radio on the back of the secret herbs and spices conversation on compensation for free agency but let's straight that back up but muddies metrics is a feature of the late trade and the biggest club of all is in the focus of muddies metrics right now the collingwood football club thanks Damian really really interested to take a bit of a deep dive into collingwood look at all areas obviously as we know we we narrowed in on playing list coaching football program facilities leadership governance commercial brand power talent attraction and geography so starting with playing list so first and foremost Nick Deikos and exceptional center piece with a good call group of players Cameron Quayna Perimen Josh Deikos McCreary and Maynard what hurt them throughout the year were clearly injuries to more an alliate clear needs midfielder with ball winning ability Locky Neal a key forward alongside McStay Hogan and looking ahead key defensive succession so how's nearing the end more injury concerns and obviously frampton's been

asked to punch above his weight most weeks and does a reasonably good job notice the good signs with some younger guys Ed Allen 22 swaddling 19 and Charlie West is the potential at 20 years of age that he he could be that next key forward yeah so playing list wise a seven out of 10 okay you then go under coaching and football program slash facilities well the phrase word at the moment is modern coach and I think they've just got about the pin up boy or the pin up when it comes to modern coaching Craig McCrey's definitely the prototype um he extracted a 13 win season of mid injuries they clearly have a program that develops role players really well so their developments good Charlie Gardner is ahead of football does a very good job Justin Leppich knows what premierships look like head of list and talent Jared Wade head of high performance does a really good job they've they've invested approximately 71 million dollars in their facility since 2004 most recently 15 million dollars completed a redevelopment in 2024 with their medical and high performance so very very strong in these areas so eight and a half out of 10 big mark out of

10 there and you wait that significantly leadership and governance is next so a little bit of a change a little bit of a change over the last few years with their obviously their president Barry Carp comes in as their president with the finance and corporate strategy background Paul look here is there as a former player with the football experience on the board Craig Kelly obviously very well-rounded CEO with a lot of experience across many layers of football and well connected well connected commercial experience so and looking at the board as a whole strong mixer finance governance and football experience so they get an eight out of 10 in that area I reckon they'll go close to the the perfect mark on the category that goes as commercial brand out they are the gold star so it's the first 10 so the first 10 across the board commercial brand power and look a lot of this dates back to the move from Victoria Park but if we go through it now to 2026 113,000 members operating revenue last year of nearly a hundred million dollars average home and away crowd at the mcg of 75,000 premier partners like emberts and Nike they are the clear benchmark when it comes to

commercial brand power national profile fans travel well they travel so well that in the state clubs love playing calling wood um marquee fixtures in a strong balance sheet so no secret or surprises there they are the benchmark 10 out of 10 when it comes to commercial brand power and then talent attraction is the second last item yeah so look the cell is the mcg stage the coaching reputation the off field opportunities as you mentioned with with the CEO and the board so they create one of the leagues most compelling recruiting offices they've done well so far this year obviously with Neil and Hogan they missed out on butters now I suspect that might have something more to do with actually the the mechanics of getting the deal done as opposed to actually the cell of calling wood um but I give them an eight out of 10 in this area all right in the last one just to round off your metrics yeah so clearly the Melbourne location but being across the road from the mcg you know fantastic opportunity the players get there at their own facilities first they walk across to the mcg so they've got a really good game day experience for the players make it easy

with the recovery coming back from the mcg as well close to the inner Melbourne easy access to cafes and and restaurants in the inner side of Melbourne don't have to live too far away from the club so they get a nine and a half there as well um they are in elite club so they hit the the banner there anything between 80 and 90 I I regard as elite with the metrics and they finish with an 83.5 there you go so you're going to do the latter at the completion of this series but from memory it was a 91 that absolutely received so I'll give you a little bit of an update there so Adelaide Crosa 74 a Brisbane Lions were the benchmark with a 91 a Carlton were a 75 which was strong calling with 83.5 and Essendon 52 so to give people an understanding to be in a elite you're 80 to 90 you're strong club 70 to 79 you're ready to take that next step to elite developing 60 to 69 and you're in the reset when you're 50 to 59 gotcha anything to pull apart there do you want

to spot on I think in terms of in terms of that I think I think the location and what calling would have been able to do with um at their training facility is is outstanding obviously with what they can do post game from the MCG games as well I know you see them all just walking out and walking back over to their own facility to do to get in recovery the families are already there I think that works really well from a players perspective and families being associated with the players the players also so in in all those things it's um it's just a big tick in terms of the attraction for for players to join that footy club absolutely and some of those guys you mentioned there as the under the playing list part of your metrics um they good encouraging seasons isn't they swaddle in in the back half of it um both of you talk very glowingly there of the prospects of Charlie West and he certainly showed some signs didn't he and then Ed Allen as we saw in key moments in in big games late in the season had key moments himself and uh yeah there's a lot to like about that and obviously they've got the the biggest name in the game in in Nick

Dakehouse who's contracted until the end of 2029 and continually like having people suggest that tazimot come from it some days and they've I've got no doubt they want to pay rise yeah but they've got him on on mates rates right now and they're really given what given he could do mow if that button is going to be on two million dollars next year yeah Nick Dakehouse should be on five no absolutely I mean he's he's clearly going to be the best player we've got to be the best player in the country more well Zach butters has kicked six goals in his past 41 games it's the five's a bit high in the current landscape I get what you're saying but if you had a said to me three and a half I would have gone you know what you're right yeah I'll go back I'll back a little bit at the moment three point seven five but in some but in some yeah okay we'll do that you didn't say no you're right that that becomes a conversation of course it does internal because you know you've you've got to start to reward this this this this this all time great to all time great has had five seasons of football and how old is it 2323 a car could have had started favorite effectively in four brown lows and finally and thankfully got one that's

uh yeah I mean you and you talk about marketing and and Marty's metrics there's much about marketing as the blank list and the way you weight it well he's he's the greatest marketing tool the game arguably has ever seen so then so this is this is the next conversation so I'm going back to five by the way yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah jump for some but I'll tell you what I'll tell you what that's the next conversation in the CBA though it has to be because if if you were to pick a part calling wood and the commercial power that they've got with their membership base the average home crowd and and what they've got and the opportunity for a Nick daycoast and what he could and can earn off the field this is some area that's always been a bug bear of mine is that when you look at how much the AFL is in the way of protected sponsors and like a Nick daycoast and I know we laugh but he should and has every right to be earning between three four five million every year we go up to the point again sorry you're talking about off field as well were you in your five or is that just the on field contract either go I was being

flippant with the five but but if I'll tell you if Zack butters whatever Zack butters on I'd be prepared to pay double to no I agree to report it is on two I agree you should be the number one paid player in the in the compound wouldn't be too far away from that either yeah well bots on 600,000 less than Zack butters just to give you another illustration of the the rubbish that gets gets paid to some players in the game but that's what you're talking about is the fact that that a Nick daycoast should be earning five plus million collectively over a 12 month period if these things come into play another another thing because it shouldn't be held back like and yeah so you can get it with the concessions to go to Tasmania but then when you would put the commercial brand power of Tasmania and you put it next to a collingwood they're not anywhere near the same conversation for a Nick daycoast in terms of what he can do and then what you'd potentially then argue post football the legacy and the brand of what potentially a Nick daycoast could then earn with these name image and likeness post football from being associated with collingwood I would feel

would be would be quite great for oh sevens just text in you collingwood haters author we've been the opposite actually in this in this conversation because they're in a leak club and we're talking about your best player getting paid more than what he's currently currently on I think we're loving what collingwood for is doing couldn't be listening or we've just said no at all she's on a bit let's take a break what we'd like to do though after Marty does his metrics is to throw it open to collingwood supporters so potentially 407 may want to give us a call or send us a subsequent text message if you do want to call though do so 133 55 48 otherwise we'll take a look at your texts about collingwood and Marty's metrics or anything else you want to talk about relating to trade of 2026 that to come on the late trade Continental tyres AFL trade radio continental cross contact AT2 one tyre for every adventure designed to inspire confidence on any terrain

say yes to trading captures for cocktails with DDA stock up and save and shop half price vitamins now at chemist warehouse this is the late trade with Damian Barrett and Brad Johnson a new's update for Victoria police put yourself forward for a career at Victoria police yeah pretty surreal to be honest yeah can't quite believe it never thought that would happen when I first got drafted over to freemaniel seven years there eight years at brissey but yeah really excited to be here and can't wait to get stuck into it with the players the coaches the whole club just learn about this new environment and then get to know the fans as well that's that's super exciting as well massive magpie army here so looking forward to it that's lucky nil speaking officially for the first time as a collingwood footballer that's via the collingwood website and just a quick retracing of his football storyline there seven years as he said at the freemandal dockers in which he won a couple of best and fairest and played also

in a grand final in 2013 then eight years at the the Brisbane Lions and in extraordinary two brown lows two brown low place getting three premierships four grand finals and then if you go back to this time last year guys it was it was just going to be the greatest shock of all time if we were to start talking about lucky nil in october what is it to being a collingwood football if we just go back one year when he just come off a second consecutive grand final having played in that grand final with a questionable calf and then just a fast forward for the 12 months he's in june with what happened off field and then the decision that he and the club made even before the season started that that would be his last season of football and the conditioning of lion supporters and the wider foot industry to to get to this day each where he's now going to his third club a 16th season of football in the game for collingwood it's a it's just mind boggling when you just go back 12 months the things that that could be happening yeah it's a chore is and I hadn't seen this either as per cal to me Brisbane defender cadin Coleman is open to exploring a

trade this year that that's a name I didn't expect yeah it just got further to cal's reporting quite getting contracted for for 2027 but would look if there are options and if you go back to again just reflect the 2023 grand final when he got official votes in in the normsmith middle of that year that was a game in which the lion's lost a collingwood like in yields new home by a kick and then they're one the three grand final since and then in opening round of the very next season 2024 cadin Coleman down with a knee and then has just not been able to get back with consistency since that point and yet at that stage coming off the 2023 grand final and that knee damage in 2024 he was in some people's eyes almost considered the most important player for what they were hoping to become the way he was generating drive off half back well and it's interesting at the moment too because what you've got now Neil Marshall cadin Coleman potentially out or least exploring but it's something that Brisbane hasn't been too unfamiliar with when you

look at what potentially is left there their their club in recent years too when you when you look at players stars of it stars of itch being one Kalamachi being another mixed day we're obviously now now calling wood so I've just done such a really good job of being able to replenish but then also stay at the top so obviously I know but I just feel with Neil they've got ready ready made guys ready to go in obviously clearly Marshall being 20 years of age a premiership player mind you and they lost to while Joe Danher retired after and then they've just been able to keep bringing guys through when you look at Alan Draper the latest two additions Marshall and Neil going out but then you look at the emergence of the Ashcroft players like Will Ashcrofts an A grade superstar leave while now get his opportunity through there so there's still going to be okay and Annable too who started 20 36 encouragingly before he had setbacks and then just couldn't

get back in the team but the booms and the wraps on him as he was going into his first year this time last year with huge and I think he validated a lot of that with what he showed early on it's just going to be where he plays because if you look at it if you look at their forward half when they've got so much pop and so much scoring power just whether or not now Bailey gets more midfield time and then Annable can play that forward half roll or or where it would sit in turns of the balance of the side but absolutely I mean there's not too many pick six players in the competition that don't get regular senior football in their first few years so they'd certainly be looking to bring him in okay we we called for am I on yeah sorry yeah we called for people to have some feedback to your Marty's metrics and Kevin from Bendigo has done that hey Kev hey going good but that's good look I uh think Colin would really need to utilize the key players have gotten the one player don't get in the most out of his Jeff take off season does a great job in the half back plank but

what Colin has got a lot of defenders and they're consistently in the best depends team which is part of the of the mantra of the team if we get him into the midfield with Nick Daikos and Lockhe Neil I think it would really you both to the team in terms of that sort of core part of of the group so maybe that's a reason they're looking potentially short to so I can just place Josh into into a central forward position do you Kevin think it's inside the center bounce or you're talking more just up on the wing and alone to run and control the wing roll for Colin would well I think it's both I mean I don't think anyone could play 100% of the game anymore I mean it came very very quick it's not like 20 years ago I think you've got to have a core group of six or seven players you can rotate through the center and provide you with a consistent um thing I'm to play as light need long they fill a role but you wouldn't you've got the class

of player like Josh Daikos I think that on a half back flank he's not fully utilized there's not the change you need to get more out of him we saw him in a couple of games really um birth to game open when he was moved into the center yeah and as we know he was a best and first winner in a premiership year of 2023 and he certainly spent some time in the middle that year again I hear what Kevin saying he didn't spend a majority of time in there in this year there's maybe reasons we're not aware of but he's a pretty I started to play make and we know that a lot of footy and a lot of scoring is coming off half back in the game so that's probably why you know the option is for him to be there because he's so creative you know majority of the time they retain possession when he when he wins it and distributes it so there's there's elements as to why he plays that role but I do agree that up around the footy maybe some more four half ball may see them go to a whole new round I sort of look at the two positions in modern football that are so so critically important one

as you suggest is the turnover game at half back and and the ability is sling shot so that's as good a position as you can play right now in modern football and then the second one being the strike afforded the ball so when you're Jordan Tagawa is at full flight you're Zach Bailey type you know that person that can actually play four half set a Nick Daycoz clearly does it really really well so I quite like him moving the ball and running and play making but it's just going to be interesting whether or not a lucky Neil who's an extractor that he can bring someone like a Josh daycoz into the game more and he certainly will Nick I think Nick or I think Nick Daycoz will be absolutely loving having someone like Neil the greatest beneficiary of that recruitment it's going to be fantastic I mean the clearance component to that to his game Marty it was was the largest reason Colin would want it to go it's it's the area that they're they've lacked in and I'm in a stat to go early on that everyone should probably be watching is just how many time there's a handball received from Neil to to take us I mean that would be a really interesting statistic to

watch because that secondary play that Neil will be able to create for Nick Daycoz will be certainly something opposition coaches would need to try and need to try and squash in some way shape or let's take a break Marty on the other side of it we've had a lot of questions and the text machine for I'm out today we cannot keep up with it even without us asking and prompting callers and text is to to throw some thoughts in the screens are just scrolling and rolling through but there's a constant one over the last couple of days I've noticed I want to get you to explain it to the people asking about it and that is that the compensation picks for the clubs with the first five picks and how those picks get slid back down the draft and what it means for the clubs that are required to match beats just to scientifically explain it for us there's a particular reference there on the text machine from bolts will get to that specifically but it is a theme of the afternoon and of the past two or three days so let's deal with that on the other side of this

on the late trade continental tyres AFL trade radio continental cross contact AT2 one tyre for every adventure designed to inspire confidence on any terrain so yes to trading catches for cocktails with DDA stock up and save and shop half price vitamins now at chemist warehouse this is the late trade with Damien Barrett and Brad Johnson a news update for everything fleet everything fleet car and truck rentals 100% Australian owned and operated probably raised a few eyebrows just when that that news initially broke but I think if you work your way all through that I think there's been some really good conversations with Alex not only from myself but also Ross Lyne we've actually sat down and asked him is he happy at the club he indicated that he is really happy at the science and wants to stay here and and we really came to keep him as well as a young developing

player he's an outstanding young man and we're really excited about what he can do in the future so I think you know once you get through all the noise of what took place and what happened and you get to the facts of it and now a really good conversation is between myself and Alex and also Ross and Alex and and we're really happy to move on. St. Kilders, Lenny Hayes there earlier today on trade radio talking about the let's go with perplexing Alex Terouze situation two years in the AFL system obviously of high early pick for the Saints two years ago still got one year of a contract to run but was exploring options via a gold coast approach and other conversations around where he was at and the request to have a a re-contracting Irving by the Saints. Marty you've been in this space with young players and you've observed this industry from afar. What did you make of it all? That conversation I believe is a healthy one but if a player is happy and I can only go on my experience when I've had players in that situation the first point of

contact and call would be for the player to go and talk to the coach straight away. As a pain where you sit what your role is what needs to happen. Did you help the player shape that conversation? Absolutely yeah. Well I was always a big believer is I was always a big believer is is one the coach will respect you more and two you're you're cutting out all the middle men you're cutting out the magic you're cutting out the family you're cutting out everyone you're sitting you're eyeballing the coach and you're saying Brad tell me like it is how do I get into this side what do I need to do how do I need to go about it and what needs to happen and then from that you work through it and would you want to be part of those conversations absolutely not you arrange them through the full operations boss yeah and that conversation and I've always had it with and it should always happen around that mid season meeting because if you've genuinely agreed or if you're not agreed at that point and it gets to sort of round 16 17 18 have it then and then you take notes you talk through it and you're also teaching young men to be able to be able to have difficult conversations and actually own it too because it's your career you've

got to own it like it's not for the manager to own your career and hide behind it so then go and dissect that information find out then come back then we'll dissect it together then I would follow up with the club and say um Brad Johnson's just called me he said he met with you this is my understanding how it went ABCD we're on the same page everyone gets it let's get to this certain date we work to this certain date to make sure we're all on the same page then when we get to that certain date it's either helped hindered fixed whatever's happened and then you make the educated decision from there and I feel that that's the best way to do it. It did get messy it seems as though it has been resolved to a to a substantial enough way to calm down. Yeah yeah I was never a big fan of touring and I said to this before I always tried to let oh I did I let clubs know and I know some don't always like to do that or whatever but I just feel that to your point that the industry is just changed too much a club's going to meet with players in contract or out of contract so it's

the same for everyone it's just you just serves you so much better when you're up front and you talk through situations then then doing it you know um behind with Skull Duggery. Yeah it's just never helps anyone. Yep that was the news update for everything fleet on this particular hour. Marty we flag this let's have this conversation now bolts on the iMarts X line has posed a question about the father son Combo Picks for clubs with the first five picks so the the clubs that finish in the last five spots on the letter the question goes if they trade the top five picked is the Combo go to the original club or the club which traded into the pick and if it moves it makes those top five picks worth even more in collateral. Okay so the rule is clubs that finish in the bottom five of the ladder and have their top pick pushed back due to a match bid will be compensated with an extra pick in the second round so to give you an example if you are Essenden and you bid on Cochran at one port match and use picks four and let's assume they get the five in in compensation port now don't

get the pick in the second round Essenden then would need to hold and select their pick at two they'll get the pick in the second round Richmond then select it three they then get the pick in the second round Eagles then select it four they get the pick and you have to hold and select your pick so no it's not a pick that can be leveraged to say hey we can get you an extra second round pick you've actually got to be a club that finishes in the bottom five of the ladder and have your top five pick pushed back due to a match bid and because there's so many changes to this system this year and as I keep saying all week seem to be keeping on doing is just introducing another rule to compensate a formally introduced rule which was already introduced to do something about another rule that was in its infancy it's confusing mate so just remind us right now and the raw example this trade period until this free agency period is the Zack Buddah's compensation for port if it goes through as we expect as a free agency transaction pick five will go to port outlawed for

lots of Zack Buddahs to the western border well that's what we're led to believe absolutely let's work with that for this conversation yeah can can can what can port do with that pick five yep so in advance of the national draft I mean advance the national growth absolutely so they can improve their position so they can go four to five and they can come up the board if they want they can slip back we're talking about they can offer precedent four and five to one yeah absolutely absolutely so they can do that I would think the way it would would hold would be an essence and would bid on a Cochrane I would feel this would be my loose understanding of it at this point in time there's obviously a little bit to go but I would think there would be a bid for Cochrane and then I feel there probably would be a bid for Walker and both those clubs play pay full value correct and then and then you're obviously going to then get the compensation pick in the in the second round and then obviously then the natural order will go from there that would be something I would I would anticipate at this stage happening unless you know something was to go a ride and that is

all about to play out we we feel obviously so free agency open today fight our October 90 goes through until sorry October two it goes through until Friday October nine and John you've had a theory and this is the dominant conversation of the 2026 trade period at least on trade radio the Zack butters transaction in port at a late to western bulldogs and your view based upon calls and intel and intellect and homework is it will be lodged paperwork wise later in the week like closer to October nine than today because I've already seen well I just was never I in my opinion I wouldn't have done it today and it's not going to happen today that that was always going to be the case get through the weekend and then potentially early next week is a chance where that may be maybe lodged and and away they they go working out that the scenario with it and the longer the longer they wait give us it's 48 hours it's just like Tuesday by Thursday they've got to have either matched it or said go and put on the red white and blue well it's known

and it's going to happen that the longer they wait suggests to you and others maybe that they are clearly negotiating with western bulldogs and other clubs well there's separate things that are happening in the in the background absolutely there would be with with all clubs and that in that particular particular space but we've all known that that Zack wants the best outcome for port at a we had a big discussion about that the other day and I think most of these star players that have left their free clubs they all want the best for the club that has put the most amount of time into them to get to them to a stage where they are the better players within within the competition you want to be thankful for that that sounds really nice and I get that but it is that's true though yeah but when they say they want the best for the club that they're leaving the club that they're going to is the the the body the organization has to pay for that to be a reality yeah that's right so the club he's going to is on the hook to make him feel better about leaving the club he's leaving is that I know it's twisted around but ultimately that's just

the way it always says nice yeah that's the players wanted to sound nice that's so they can go to the best and best and enjoy their night if he really wanted the best for the lady would have stayed and I don't get wise leaving I get and he's absolutely given him all he can but it's we get a bit cute with this language I reckon that is the language and you can't you can't question you can't question it either because these guys are fantastic people as well as I'm not adding that yeah I'm not adding that and no one's questioning Zack but as a person and he would genuinely want that to be the case but we do get too cute with it being a driver for him to you know to want to get the absolute best for poor Adelaide I mean he's futures with the best of all dogs now he's on the hook to perform and when a premiership for them there wasn't he so so you're against win-win mature conversations fantastic dialogue well when you deal who gets win-win yet what's the win-win about someone wins a deal and someone loses it most last time I checked it was a felt competition yeah yeah it's okay to try and I get what John I'm saying and I

I look to be honest I was in that position where I would always try to help exactly that and you want to be able to look the all parties in the eye once you transact 100% yeah and it swings in roundabouts and I do feel that you know one day we're talking about Western Bulldogs getting a play from poor Adelaide but I'm sure in years to come it'll turn around the other way and the Western Bulldogs will have to do something for poor Adelaide yep let's take a break and then we'll come back to wrap up what has been a really big day the official opening of the AFL 2026 free agency and other storylines that have emerged throughout the course of the past five to six hours that to come on the late trade continental tyres AFL trade radio continental cross contact AT2 one tyre for every adventure designed to inspire confidence on any terrain say yes to trading captures for cocktails with DDA stock up and save and shop half price vitamins

now at chemist warehouse this is the late trade with Damien Barrett and Brad Johnson today's big moments for drink wise if you're choosing to have a drink choose to drink wise today's big moments there were many lucky nil the biggest one of the lot officially becoming a pie Toby Green becoming a cat Jolumati becoming a blue and Kiran Briggs becoming a tiger all those deals done via the opening up of free agency and yet the biggest free agent of the 2026 season is Zach butters and while he will end up at the Western Bulldogs they are yet to lodge formal paperwork for that and John I was given his context to the the why that will be the case in the 2026 free agency system time for a quick call before we close our time today on the late trade is to fern tree galley where looks caught in high look I gen so I heard you talk about the top five fitting in the in the draft before I just wanted to flag that is a high probability now that

Cody Walker is going to slip to pick three so this is just for the carbon without that there's a strong belief that Ethan Treaver is essence number two selection behind Dougie Cochran and also there's a I'll be curious to know from Marty whether or not this page in plays into it or but there was a trade done between Carlton and Ethan then last year that sort of mutually helped each other and I think they're operating in really good faith these days but does that sort of carry over across multiple multiple periods because Ethan then were able to secure dice and sharp and climb up the order last year and Carlton baked points for their bid matching that they are my favorite they are my favorite do they look oh I just reckon scat scat you tell the fact yeah so where's that going to the rules yes well the question was does does that actually come into effect to to answer your question that you asked yeah well but it does no does absolutely it does 100% like it's on just three

years apart but it comes back into effect look look to answer your question yes it does I feel that there is a lot of goodwill and there's a lot of relationships and there are people that have worked with each other at other clubs that have been a recruiting manager under a list manager and then go from being the recruiting manager at that club to a list manager at another club so there is there are those opportunities absolutely to answer your question and good draft intel there obviously with the player that you mentioned that is going to potentially split Cody Walker and and Dougie Cochran as well so that's that's really interesting to hear but I think the clubhouse later at the moment for pick one does sound like it it will be Cochran yeah sounds like it yeah thank you for your call let's take a listen again to Lenny Hayes earlier today on trade radio because this year's one thing but next year's a very big one for the St Kilda 40 club when it comes to what's going to happen with the Si Wanganen Miller and also Max Hall again I think once we get through this next period you know there's no doubt that nas and probably Max Hall will

be priorities for us going forward there's no sort of timeline on that just yet but now that's our guys will reach out at the right time there's a little timeline on it yeah I would have thought and it has to be before this time next year yeah it's about the same time next year but it has to be and depending how they're going of course but and the timing of some of these announcements as well but and the rest line the work starting now I was about to say it might even be before Christmas yeah it starts yeah like I would feel and these players might hold off and that's fine yeah but ultimately the work you know starts yeah so a lot of those times too like from experience that obviously there's a common phrase called pre-agent so the last you know or anyone that's coming out of contract doesn't necessarily have to be an agent yet a free agent but just anybody that's 12 months out that you feel so you're really going to garner a lot of interest they're going to be out there there's going to be media speculation so a lot of the time you'll find 12 months out the club will meet with that particular player's agency and say look we understand these value we know where

he's going to be and the player that doesn't want the distraction and the player that doesn't necessarily want the noise and they've named the paper every day and affect their performance will potentially go on sign then and there and you might be able to get a max hall let's say because that's just been an inspired pickup which yeah I agree why worry Naz though because he's proven that he can perform with with any thing coming in I'd be thinking they done that yeah I'd be I'd be thinking hall you'd be a really good chance to sign in the first quarter of next year or even around Christmas if the money was right and you respected it and you understood it just because of where they've recruited him from and what they've been able to do with him Naz different story I mean that's he's setting him up for life even though he's on a very good one now but this next contract's going to be multiple years as his manager has timed beautifully with Tasmania coming in he's obviously got South Australian interest his club wants to keep him so this next one's the big one for him just with the max hall one I hear what you're saying Marty and under normal circumstances

I mean I agree but under normal second services that would be how it would play out but the tazzy component to the max hall interest where they can go over and above yeah all other clubs with their offers so how much of an how much of a sell in all honesty do you think tazzy is like if you're a young player purely financial in that regard so is that the right thing no but is it does it is it is it the wrong thing either at a certain point time for a certain person okay so bit to that point if it's purely financial right you then are then taking that back to the club of origin aren't you and saying well this is where we're at what can you do and if the numbers somewhere near like I can't imagine a max hall is going to get paid extremely well but I can't imagine it's going to be a bigger gap as as a day cost versus going and staying like it'd be significant but I don't feel it would be something that St Kielder would wouldn't be able to do or help or put extra years on or do something yeah the nazi ones completely different story yeah

clearly the day cost one is a different story but it's just really interesting with tazzy coming in and what the sell is if it's only just to your point financial and that's what it will be with regards to what the afl's given tazie to go and get these types of players like max hall when they come at a contract so they can play them outside of the cap significantly in the to the tune of five million dollars is in totality isn't it in just outside outside the gap it's total on the list establishment rules have been given they can play that to one player or they can pay it to multiple and max hall is a person of interest for them in that space we've covered a little ground in five days and we've still got eight official days of this trade radio period to complete guys and I'm sure we'll be going through a whole range of other stories as those eight days unfold we'll be back Monday so to will trade radio and in between then head to the podcast page and phone trade radio
