Tampa accident attorneys. We always love our injurer report. Unfortunately, we don't love it when it impacts us here in Tampa Bay like this week is going to be impacting us. And the injurer report brought to you by Florida Orthopedic Institute in partnership with Tampa General Hospital. We've got Dr. Seth Gasser on the line today. Dr. Gasser, how you doing? I'm doing great. How are you doing better than Baker Mayfield is dealing with that dislocated right thumb expected to miss at least three weeks. Let's talk about the right thumb. Let's talk about a dislocated thumb. That's got to have a huge impact on a quarterback. Oh, yeah. I mean, you know, he's required to grip and throw the ball effectively and with a dislocated thumb for shortly thereafter, it can be quite difficult to do, which is why I'm going to be out for probably three weeks or so. Is it the worst digit finger that you can injure and is a thumb a finger? Well, yeah, I mean, depends on technically. Yeah, they're all fingers, but we, you know, the thumb is the most important, right?

It's what separates most humans from other animals and it has the most important function for daily use of the hand. And so with an injury to the thumb, especially your dominant arm in a sport that requires you to grip or throw a football, it has a tremendous impact on your ability to be a seconds. When do you think he can get back to that point where he is effective in the thumbs working well? You know, he apparently had an MRI that they say did not show anything torn, although it's really not possible to dislocate your thumb without something at least being severely stretched and injured like the ligaments. And so while you can reduce the thumb and it's relatively stable, you'll get a fair amount of swelling and pain and it takes those ligaments a while to recover. And at that point, he'll be able to come back and play and it's probably going to be three weeks or so before he's ready to get back on the field. A former guy who was a great here in Tampa Bay and now he's over with the 49ers, Mike

Evans, he had to leave the game. He took a hard hit to the side on his back. He had to get caught in the locker room and apparently he had struggles breathing. What do you think happened here, Mike? You know, typically if you get hit in the back or side and you're getting hit in the rib cage and he probably either has a bruised rib or potentially a small hairline fracture in a rib. Anytime you breathe your chest wall moves up and down and if you have a rib injury, it can be really painful to take a deep breath and that's probably what he did. There can be some other things less likely but that's probably one of the most likely causes that he has a rib contusion or maybe a little fracture in a rib. Yes, some people were bringing up things I saw in social media which is the worst thing you can look at doctor, but internal issues. Is that something that they would have initially looked at? Yes, good question because you know, and it's happened in the past to a buck into your

player. If you get a hard hit to the side depending on where you get hit and it ruptures your spleen, that can be life threatening for in certain cases just because it bleeds so much and those are medical emergencies. And so I'm sure they ruled all of those things out initially and then he probably had X-rays that if normal you're assuming it's a rib contusion but otherwise he could have a small fracture or something else. Well we all saw what happened with Jaden Daniels, the commander's quarterback dislocating that left elbow for them. Thankfully it's the non throwing elbow. Once you dislocate once, does it become easier to dislocate in the future because you've had this issue? Yes, he had this issue last year where he dislocated his elbow. And so the elbow is very different than the shoulder which is common to have recurrent dislocations. Not as common in the elbow just based on the bony anatomy and geometry. And so most elbow dislocations tend to result in chronic stiffness which is just the opposite of a recurrent dislocation unless maybe all the ligaments that get injured in an elbow

dislocation don't heal completely in which case it can happen and that's only in about one to two percent of elbow dislocations where they have recurrent instability and usually due to a ligament that's been stretched and healed in a stretched position that makes a more prone to having a second dislocation. Well, if you're dealing with any one of these injuries or something similar and any injury in general just do what I did.
