On the morning of 20 May 1967, Stefan Michalak left his motel near Falcon Lake Manitose

3:04River and walked into the wilderness carrying the equipment he used for amateur prospecting, including a geological hammer, compass, notebook and protective goggles. Michalak was an industrial mechanic by profession and had a practical interest in geology, particularly the court's formations of the Canadian shield. He had visited the Falcon Lake area before. I knew the rough country of granite, woodland and swamp well enough to spend hours exploring it alone. Shortly after 5.30am, Michalak began working his way north from the Falcon Lake area, stopping whenever an exposed section of rock caught his attention. The morning was bright and clear. Eventually he found a quartz vein that interested him and he settled down to examine it. He chipped pieces away with his hammer, looking for signs of mineral deposits and later stopped for something to eat. When he returned to the quartz, the quiet of the woods was suddenly broken by the agitated

4:07cries of geese nearby. Something appeared to have badly frightened them. Looking up, Michalak saw two brilliant objects descending through the sky. At first he described them as cigar-shaped, each with a raised section or hump. Both were glowing an intense red or scarlet colour and seemed to be travelling together. As they descended, their appearance changed and they began to look more oval or disc-shaped. One suddenly stopped in the air while the second continued towards the ground, finally settling on a broad, flat rock outcrop approximately 160 feet from where he stood. The second object remained airborne for several minutes before rising rapidly and disappearing into the distance. Michalak was now left watching the other craft resting on the rock. Its colour appeared to change as he watched, the intense red fading through darker shades before the surface became lighter and eventually resembled heated stainless steel.

5:14Around it he could see what he described as a golden glow. Michalak stayed where he was and watched carefully. His background as a mechanic influenced the way he interpreted what he was seeing. The object appeared to him to be some form of aircraft or machine and he wondered whether it might be an experimental American craft that had developed trouble and had made an emergency landing in the Canadian wilderness. The object remained on the rock long enough for Michalak to study it in detail. He took out his notebook and began making a sketch from where he sat the craft appeared roughly disc-shaped with a raised dome or coupler on top. He could see no wings, tail, conventional landing gear but obvious means of propulsion. Neither could he see numbers, letters, flags or military markings that might identify it. A low mechanical sound came from the object which he compared to a worrying or humming

6:15electric motor. There was also a hissing sound as though air was being drawn into or expelled from the craft. Warm air seemed to radiate from the object even before Michalak moved closer. He also noticed the unusual smell which he later compared to sulfur and hot electrical equipment. The combination of heat, noise and smell convinced him that he was looking at something solid and operating rather than unusual light or atmospheric effect. An opening appeared in the side of the craft and brilliant light poured from inside. Michalak lowered the protective goggles he had brought for prospecting and continued looking towards the opening. He then heard what seemed to be voices coming from within. They appeared to be two of them, both human in quality, although one seemed higher pitched than the other. He could not understand what they were saying. Believing there might be pilots inside, Michalak moved closer and called to them.

7:21Thinking the craft might be American, he offered assistance in English. Nothing answered him. The voices seemed to stop. Michalak was multilingual and tried again in several languages including Polish, Russian, German, Italian and French. He still received no reply. Michalak approached the opening and looked inside. What he saw did not resemble a conventional cockpit. There were no pilots, seats, steering controls or instruments that he recognized. Instead he described a mass or maze of lights with illuminated patterns running horizontally and diagonally and groups of lights flashing in different sequences. The brightness made it difficult to study the interior for long even through his goggles. As he stepped back, Michalak estimated that the walls surrounding the opening was surprisingly thick, perhaps around 18 inches.

8:22Three panels then moved across the opening and closed it, an action that reminded him of a camera shutter. Once the panels had come together, the exterior again became smooth, giving little sign that an opening had been there at all. Standing almost beside the craft, Michalak examined its surface more carefully. He could find no rivets, bolts, welding lines or obvious joints. The material looked metallic, smooth and highly polished. Sunlight reflecting from it produced different colours across the surface. As someone accustomed to working with machinery and metal, he was struck by the absence of visible construction marks. He reached out with his glove hand and touched the side of the craft. The surface was extremely hot and he pulled his hand away, the fingertips of the glove had been scorched or melted. Seconds later the encounter changed violently. The craft began to move, apparently rotating while still close to the ground.

9:26As it turned, a rectangular section containing a regular grid of small holes came around until it faced Michalak. He had noticed the feature earlier, but had not understood its purpose. Before he could move away, a blast of intensely hot air or gas erupted through the grid and struck him across the chest and abdomen. The force and heat drove him backwards. He shurred immediately caught fire, followed by the clothing beneath it. Michalak tore at the burning garments and threw them to the ground, stamping on them to extinguish the flames. Across his chest and stomach he felt intense pain. Marks that later appeared on his body seemed to follow a regular pattern similar to the grid he had said he faced. While Michalak struggled with his burning clothes, the object began to rise. He looked up in time to see it climbing away from the rock. There was a rush of air as it ascended, and within a short time the craft had disappeared

10:28from view. Despite being injured, Michalak went towards the place where the craft had rested. The rock looked unusually clean, almost as though loose material had been swept away from the centre and pushed towards the edges. He estimated the disturbed area to be roughly circular and about 15 feet across. He could examine it for long, nausea and dizziness began to overwhelm him. A severe headache developed and he started sweating heavily. Michalak gathered what belongings he could, pulled his jacket around his exposed upper body, and tried to make his way back towards the road. His sense of direction had become poor, and he believed his compass was behaving strangely. The walk through the wilderness became increasingly difficult. He stopped several times to vomit and had to rest repeatedly as weakness set in. Instead of emerging near the point where he had entered the woods that morning, he eventually reached the highway about a mile away.

11:30An RCMP officer encountered Michalak on the road and later recorded that he appeared confused and unwell. Almost as though he had been drinking, although there was no smell of alcohol. Michalak was concerned that whatever had happened to him might involve radiation or contamination and was reluctant to allow anyone to come close. He eventually returned to the Falcon Lake Motor Hotel, gathered his belongings and travelled back to Winnipeg by bus. His family immediately realised that something serious had happened. Michalak sought medical attention and was treated for burns. After the following days he continued to experience nausea, headaches, weakness and loss of appetite, and his condition prevented him from immediately returning to the site with investigators. The pattern marks across his abdomen soon became one of the most important features of the case. Photographs showed a series of regularly spaced burns resembling the grid he said had

12:32faced him immediately before the blast. His damaged clothing, injuries and continuing illness drew the attention of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police, the Royal Canadian Air Force and civilian investigators. Michalak produced maps and sketches while attempts were made to locate the exact place where the encounter had occurred. Investigators later examined the area Michalak identified as the landing site. Michal, vegetation and pieces of metal recovered from the location were studied, and some material associated with the site was found to be radioactive. The findings did not identify the craft or explain what had happened, but they added another unusual element to a case that had already involved injuries, damaged clothing and a detailed close range account. The Falcon Lake incident has endured because Stefan Metalak did not merely report a distant object in the sky. He described watching a craft land studying it at close range, hearing voices from within,

13:37looking through an opening, touching its surface and then suffering burns where a blast of heat struck him. His injuries, damaged clothing and reported landing site and the later investigation gave the case a physical dimension that remains difficult to separate from the story itself. Nearly six decades later, no agreed identification of the object has emerged, leaving the events of 20th of May 1967 as one of Canada's most unusual UFO encounters.
