And all clear, gets a traveler. Grand Rapids, take a heart today at 1 o'clock and Lake Shore got the forfeit win over Gaul Lake last night. All clear, I'll have their hands full. Sacred Hearts rolling. Yeah, I was just saying the least. Doc Holmes coach Earl is morning. And I think he says they only got nine players for today. They've lost 10 players to the injuries and illness this week. Oh man. That's a tough one. That is tough. Top one of those 10 players. Exactly. You don't want to see it anytime, but especially again, Sacred Heart. St Joe 64 28 winners over Portis, Northern coach Andrew Prattley is joining us. Man, what a second half for you guys. I mean, I thought we played really well all the way around all four quarters. Just that kid's special. And he got loose a couple
of times and got loose quick in the third quarter to and then we kind of settled in and started honing in a little more on him. And they did a nice job offensive false keys and things they do in that offense. And so I had a couple on us. But I thought our staff and our kids responded defensively. Shut him out after that first drive of the third quarter. Our offense was really firing pretty well all night last night. He's that you know that kid, Arias Jackson. Yeah, the name to Oh, I was just going to ask is he at least a senior? No, we got three of the best junior running backs in state of Michigan with Portis, Northern Port Central. And I think we have one too. So it's a good some unbelievable talent that's in that class around here. Almost 240 yards alone for this kid. What what makes him as good as he is? He's just so thick, strong and he's got good feet. So he makes you miss in the hole. He's got power to run through and he's got speed to break away from you. So he killed us last year and almost did again this year. But I think our offense was really honed in this week and
took advantage of things that they had done and capitalized most of the time on it. Yeah, when you go against the offense like Portis, Northern, will they do direct snaps right to Jackson? Just go. Do you key on him? I mean, how do you I mean, it's like playing like a Michael Jordan. How do you try to control? The problem is that the way they do things they're pulling people every which way. I mean, it's a single wing offense. It's old school football from the 1900s and a lot of teams around our area have resurrected things to do it. And so it's been some of those things. It's really difficult to defend because they overload one side. There's guys moving the wrong direction from where the ball is going to end up and they pull enough guys one way to make you think it's going that way. And so you can't really read guards like old school football would tell you you can't read the fullback because that guy sometimes goes every other side. So you really have different guys reading different things and everyone has to stay disciplined and then you're hoping that all those keys you're reading enough
of them stay true that you've got enough guys to tackle. And unfortunately, sometimes you have enough guys to tackle and the kids just so good. He makes you miss. So when you got a kid that talented in this kind of offense, it makes it tough. You know, rarely are going to shut them completely down. We knew we'd have to score some points and, you know, 64 is nice. But, you know, I think one thing that's hidden, I don't mean this to sound arrogant at all, but when we're pulling starters, people like, oh, you're only average in 40 points a game like, well, we've pulled starters. I mean, Ichdixson's played 16 of 24 quarters. Wow. You know, think about that for a second of what his yardage and touchdowns would be. So it's great that we can do that. It gives our kids rest. It's great for our program watching other kids get an opportunity to play and do what they do. But stats can be deceiving. So, you know, when you when you defense is giving up some points, which they have not done, they've paid outstanding and just gives our offense more opportunities. That's what football is about, especially when you're a two-platoon team. When one side's struggling because they're talented or doing something crazy and the other side's got to step
up and I think our defense did that for us at times. And that was offensive-surned and make sure we we capitalized in everything and we definitely found some things in the run game. And then when they had to adjust to that, we had some pretty big plays in the passing game. I think our average drive was a minute and a half outside the one where, you know, by the time we'd pulled starters, some of the starters in the fourth quarter, average drive was less than a minute and a half. And I think that's in four plays. So of course, I started off with Ichdixson getting a huge kickoff return. It was great to see that finally hit and I almost got that down there. So really thought Mitch Culver's punt, you know, they pinned us at the one yard line and we had a couple penalties that kept us down there and Mitch punted out of the back of the end when you got, you know, you used to 14 yards. He said that they're at 11 and pressure's coming and he got the ball, not only got it out, but hit a boomer out of there and, you know, changed the field completely. And so those little detail pieces made a lot until we got the offense on obviously once the trade, like I said all the time, I just go football, that train starts rolling. It's hard to stop and we started scored in that third quarter and getting stops on defense. That train started rolling
real fast. You mentioned the shorter snap in the punt. How often do you practice that every, what's twice a week? Do you run? Actually three times a week, I suppose, but yeah, coach church has our punt team and every that's how he ends the punt every week is going down with backed up and how we have to change the splits and different things to make it effective. And so yeah, we, you know, done a nice job with special teams dividing up this year with different coaches and charge of each one. And I think they've done a great job. Our special teams has greatly improved and kicker turned hit one last night. We kept, I mean, they have three really good athletes back on kickoff. And so we were trying to avoid kicking it deep to them too often, but even when we did end up kicking them deep to them, I thought our covers is really great. You know, our PAT field goal team's been amazing. So it's really been a big bonus for us to get better at that fast out of the game and then of course when they offensive defense are kind of at a high level as well, makes for nights like that. What was the difference with Dixon between the first and second half? I think going in locker me had like 40, 45 yards and up 130 and a second half alone.
Yeah, I'm really there's the third quarter, right? I mean, that's the thing that's crazy. So, no, I think it really was a path adjustment. We had, we had some game planning to do some different things to start them off to loosen them up. And they weren't, they were going okay, obviously we scored, but there were some things we thought we could get early that weren't there. And as we were watching the film, blessed the film on the sidelines, right? You know, you're saying, gosh, it's two feet wider. It's as old as and so he looked at the films like, oh yeah, okay, and then bam, gone. I mean, the very next time we're in the play and then we really, they're in the same play, probably 25 to 30 times in the second half. I mean, I don't know, maybe it's not that many, probably 15 to 20 at least, where I bet we only called two run plays the whole second half. And it took some shots in the passing game, but we found something in their defense with formation in part of the field and they didn't really have our answer. And so it was great to just be able to do something pretty basic and kind of dominate that way. It's the coaches on News Talk Sports 94.9 WSJM, St. Joe 64 28 winners at Portage Northern last night will take a
great war on the way from signature dealer group on News Talk Sports 94.9 WSJM. At United Federal Credit Union, our checking accounts meet you where you are. Want to think Sandra K's bakery and cafe as always for our breakfast treats again this morning. I told myself I was in a pace and at 816 I've 820 already. Well you're on pace. Well that is not a pace that I need to keep though. My goodness. I gravitated to one of those pumpkin Halloween cookies.
Yep. I coached you before I am a cookie snob but any cookie that I've had from Sandra K's it's top rate. We've also got some Danish's and Browne's. Yeah I've had to cookie and see even coach Bradley. I know. I know he's saying. This man is you know just take one no one care. We're not going to post. Yeah. No no no pictures here. If he did score 64 then he couldn't have one. But since you got 64. He's going to keep it on you. I know exactly. He's going to keep it on you. You mentioned the technology on the sideline. You're able to see you know watch clips on the sideline. How drastically has that changed things? Oh that's unbelievable. I mean you know used to be back and there we used to joke when you'd say hey how they line up or what happened on that play in the kid with someone. I coached there's three guys for me to block. I go and block him. What? Every time it felt like there's you know everybody they must have complained of 17 guys. But now that the film it's like what happened like good second.
No that's not what happened. You know coach Clare before he moved away this year had built us a really cool pop-up TV thing with a whiteboard and so we're able to sit our entire defense on the bench when they're off in the field and vice versa and go through the film with them on a big screen and kind of show them what's what what hey good job on this because we did this or hey we could do this and make it better and it's really really nice and it's like to me it's changed the game and if you're not maybe I shouldn't let that secret out but I just see a lot of coaches and so not utilizing things like that and it's like man I don't know how you can survive if you're not using the technology so we love it I think it's one of the things that we credit the half-time adjustments and different things is being able to go back and watch it and see what's there and just be like a game changer for us. I can imagine. Now Portage Northern zero passing yards on the night and they did throw the ball six times. What was our pass you like coming into this ball?
Different you know they started out they had a kid that was playing some true quarterback at times for them and he got hurt early in the year. He played probably 10 snaps or so I would think that that where they truly kind of getting more of a shotgun look of true spread offense. He actually dressed last night we thought maybe he'd give it a go so we had game plan forum if he did come in but I think one of the things that was they do a lot of of something we take advantage of too like we run the ball so much that when we give a play action look sometimes there's no safety because they're flying down in the box things like that and I thought well that was a few times less. Yeah and one of the things I thought was really effective for our defense is it's challenging when you know it's 90% run and you've got to read your key and if this guy does this this and this and so we challenge because I've done like now it got a little bit of my voice on the sideline last night. You know you got a pass interference call that maybe was questionable but you know he's guarding one of the fastest kids in the state man coverage and his job is run responsibility first so he's going to be a trail technique and things like that but
you know I thought just outstanding discipline from our secondary to you know read the keys being run sport making the tackles of the line screen or sometimes also when they are throwing being able to see that notice that and cover that so that was impressive. Early in the third quarter they scored a pull to within a touchdown and you score four on answer touchdowns. Is there anything you could point to that kind of made the difference that last stretch? Well I think that defensively right you and you're we were we felt like we kind of felt like early in the first quarter we we had punted and then we started noticing things on the film and I'm like man if we just fix this so and so forth and it really felt like our kids were coming off and saying coach we're dominating them up front we can do this in this and really felt like offense I told our defense of stuff just stopped me a couple times we're not they're not stopping us and in a second half when you know they got it within was a seven or eight maybe seven I think and then we came right back and answered and got back up 15 within I think a minute minute and so then it's
such a challenge scored in the first two and a half minutes and third quarter like to start to ball you. It's totally a just a momentum thing right like we knew they weren't going to stop us defense just get a stop and then once they got one it became you know we're going to score against an I Europe 21 and now in that offense you know it's hard because without a true quarterback you know you're going to expect you're running back to break four touchdowns in less than a minute which he's certainly capable of but it honed you know little things a little bit better and I think that our defense did a great job of still and then get some momentum and it honestly there are offense was on the field the whole time because they're trying to you know defense would get out and we'd score right away so now they're back they're a two platoon this year as well and so you know those kids were tired and I think they wore out they wore down a little bit and we're executing quite as well as they had earlier in the game and I thought a defense continued to get a little bit more amped and you know like I said that trains are a roll and pass and it was
definitely not getting it stopped from the offense perspective it looked like the first half you were not going as fast paced as you normally do but then you did do that in the second half was that by design? No not by design but we had a we had a kid a couple kids that transfer to Portis Northern last year and had been an offensive football player for us and moved the defense for them and so last year at our game he was telling them every play call we had so we had to change things up and call things differently and I thought okay he's graduated we're probably good and the first couple is the first drive first I guess there's a second drive because we had the first one short but they were they knew some of our calls oh really? so then we had to move to some different ways to call plays for a little while and then we started doing some phony calls and then they stopped really listening because once you make a phony call and they think you're doing one thing and you go the opposite way you start maybe not trust that anymore and so yeah sometimes you gotta play those games right? We got multiple ways to call plays though the play we ran 15 times we actually have five ways to call it and so we used
all five of those ways and you know they stopped listening because you don't you know you well that's what this play meant but then we ran that play and they did the same thing and so it just becomes not worth it so lots of ways you know lots of tricks and magic and smoking mirrors as they say that's our show smoke mirrors explain maybe and say as much as you think you can't say on this and how you call because you really don't you don't go and a huddle that often we try never to go in the huddle unless there's something crazy but yeah when we go fast we have we call code words words that mean a play the play has its own name so we can use that name as well we just our kids are super smart in st. Joe and so we were able to communicate multiple plays by different words and we just kind of scream out a couple different words and they know what to do so it's good execution we also wear wristbands in case of a backup plan we also have some special plays one more complicated with motions and movements and things that we want to do so those are on wristbands so we use numbers for those and just a ton of different ways to communicate
and of course sometimes you just pull a kid and say hey run this play we had to do that twice last night when they're under the boundary and just is what it is but you know one of the things I think we're blessed with is is is it highly academic institution and so our kids are very intelligent able to pick up and do a lot of those things and remember remember those things and so that makes it really fun to be an offensive coach. Thank you coach Andrew Prattley joining us here on the coaches saying the bears 64 28 winners at Portage Northern last night will take a break we'll come back and wrap things up with coach Prattley from signature dealer group it's the coaches on news talk sports 94.9 WSJM. in the heart of the Benton Harbor Arts District local organic farm fresh the coaches on news talks for it's 94.9 WSJM or a signature new group on the per avenue in Benton Harbor philomitado Brett Wikowski St. Joe football coach Andrew Prattley is joining us the bears 40 64 to 28 winners on the road of porteds northern last night up next another if you want to unfamiliar upon it with red for union what do you know about them yeah so the one good thing is we actually threw against them a seven and seven last summer at Chelsea and their their head coach was actually through our mentorship program through a coach association so I was actually I want to his mentors and they're often scored in his action on our board director so it's kind of a cool connection there their division four playoff team last year to slid right down to division five at the top end you know they're four and two they they've got two pretty easy games as they would say on the end of their schedule so I mean I think they were you know they needed a game and they
aren't afraid to play people and we needed a game and we're we're certainly not afraid to play people and so I was just going to opportunity to keep our cancer game alive and get our kids in opportunity to play football which I think it's important you don't get many opportunities and so as the you know playoff point wasn't even a calculation at that point like we're going to play a football game and obviously now calculations come out we're you know we're in the if we can win obviously it you know we're going to get more points than taking that forfeit anyway so it's a win-win-win for us but they're very talented I was able to watch film about one o'clock last night got that in and you know they won 51 enough and I think last night very talented skill kids really good I think offensively and you know defense are a great last night but the different type of offense so we'll see we actually got a chance to see them in the scrimmage against Harper Creek which you know Harper is a pretty good team hard division and pretty physical so it helps us a little bit with how they might line up to what we do versus a spread look and so I'd be interesting you know when you play teams from this far away there's not much you're going to know
about them other than the film and so is that abundance of coach to play something he does I love it I love when everybody because it's when you play the same people all time they like I said they might even know your play calls but for us you know that's something I'm not even the slightest bit worried about right they're going to have a clue what we're calling things are you know they don't see our offense which is also nice I think we run a pretty unique offense and so when you play the same teams every year they they get used to that right and this team is not going to have any idea what we're doing so they put a lot on them to have to replicate that in a week and it's one of the beauties of playing spread offenses every week is that you know they all do a little bit of a wrinkle here and there but a lot of it's the same stuff so all those teams that run spread and we're going to see you know who's not bad at Creek Central and then we've got Red Beauty Unibals the Kalamazoo Central and so you know it's it's good for our defense to see the same thing and be able to just play at a high speed you know three games live your six games into the regular season which blows my mind how fast the season has gone but six games in is your team on pace to where you were
kind of hoping it would be this part of the season that's all I thought that was the most complete game we've played now it's hard because the matter one game got out of hand early about a Creek Central game got out of hand early so we didn't actually play four quarters of you know the starters but I felt like they're are choose played at a high level last night when they came in after giving up some points in the Valley Creek Central game and and kind of shut them down when they got an opportunity so just felt like all three facets we've been challenging the kids to play at a level of Detroit King played a level of a Harper Woods Chelsea duet right teams that are at the top of our division and and you know that's who we're playing Friday night regardless of who's got the jersey what colors they are where the game is play at that level and I think they've been practicing that way just a special group of kids and so you know challenge them last night like can't be satisfied like this is a great win we played really well but we can play better you know we still have mistakes here and there we still miss tackles we still miss blocks we still drop you know the routes didn't run carefully balls were your happy to point all of us absolutely can't wait
till Monday's medium we're gonna have lots of fun you know it's just they you want to get to where you've never been you got to do things you've never done and I think for us it's uh continuing to just get better every day in practice and come to work every day to fix things and clean things up and continue to see my challenge to them has always been how great can we be um a lot of big goals in a thin hour program and um you can't get to where you want to get without doing things really really well and continue to get better every day and never ever ever be satisfied and right now so far we're six weeks in and they keep doing that every week and I don't anticipate that change we got great leadership and we got uh in great senior class 24 guys that are busing our tail every day and showing the young kids how we do things and uh I'm excited to get back to work and get some film in today and tomorrow and meet and I get back with them Monday and prepare for another game. So you mentioned that you know it's good to have this game for so many reasons but also you're able to keep your tackle cancer uh night which is next Friday against red for union. What's the mission behind? Yeah I mean you know my mom passed away four years ago with cancer
and we had done one of these when I was a head coach I'm a heights my defense coordinator actually died of pain credit cancer uh right after the season and he was battling it throughout a couple of year period and just to see him go through that um you know good friend of mine and uh and then another one of my assistant coaches died from pain credit cancer like a year later and so just a lot of you know affects everybody I don't know there's one person I've ever met and say you know anybody that has cancer and they say no right somebody yeah we have a parent uh you know of one of our players right now going through it and so it's just one of those things that it's affecting everybody and so um try to partner with you know my mom's foundation with a local foundation as well um each year to give money to and uh this year the Berane County Cancer Center and um you know just we've sold jerseys which appreciate those of the support names as part on the backs to support those who have gone through it or fought it um and then we got t-shirts for sale online you can get those on the St. Joe football Facebook page or Instagram they're also available on our school store $20 and you know all the all the proceeds are going to get split between the two
organizations um my mom's I don't mention foundation uh supports people going through cancer to help them with offset some of the costs and also scholarships we've given scholarships to uh ironically one of our players got it last year I don't pick it I have nothing to do with it um my sister's family does that and then the previous year one of our players sister's got it so um we've been able to keep those scholarships going for help kids through things up not only here but my sister's a volleyball coach in Frankfurt where we grew up and and she does the same thing for them so helping some local people through some things up there as well so um it's just a great organization and obviously the cancer um very county cancer service down here just doing lots of things to help people it's it's an awful thing to watch people go through and um it's great when people can come out the other end and be stronger for it we've got a lot of those as well um so we'll have a survivor walk before the game we'll have uh lots of different things going on but uh the end of the day you know it's an opportunity for our kids to wear a name on the back that they probably
don't know um but that you know it's an inspiration and uh we're looking forward to honoring lots of great people and um hopefully playing really good football as well. If too many of us have lost loved ones the cancer too many of us are battling the disease so it's a great you know it's a great opportunity to raise awareness and you mentioned Birian County Cancer Service they took care of my mom when she was battling breast cancer before she you know unfortunately passed away but she couldn't say enough about them and you know it's a fence like this is to to remind people to check regularly you know yeah I think it's uh good to get that check and I think it's good to like help those who need to help too is sometimes people forget that it's not just the medical expenses there's a lot of other things that are going on and it might be traveling to go get treatments and that you know a gas word it is it's expensive and it's hard sometimes impact on people and um so we try to do as much as we can to help those people out but you're right just
aware of it's getting yourself checked take taking things especially with family history and and that kind of thing making sure you're going to the doctor and getting as many uh check up as you can and um and then just knowing there's people out that they care about you in support for those people are going through it um it's not easy and knowing that there's people that are there to help you and so we look forward to this game every year and uh we're excited to have read for you need to fill that void for us we really appreciate that um because otherwise you know that game goes away and uh it's not you know just unfortunate because it's a situation so I appreciate them coming over and and we're excited to get another game from somebody outside of our area and I then I applaud you for doing that because we've all I know off this table been touched by cancer I lost a brother to liver and I know both your parents and you've got some issues and you know coach you too and boy it's this when you see a family member go through ever at a friend to right remember Bob who right yes it's this it can devastate and they don't even look like who they were a year before right so if we could eradicate that disease that would change a lot of lives
it would they've made huge strides but you know next step is to try to get through it and you're both your right bearing in community foundation or cancer does a great job helping out families going through those battles so again if you missed any of what we were talking about with the game more information on the st. Jeff all yeah Facebook page um you can certainly reach out to our st. Jeff boosters any of them uh school store at the school's selling stuff we'll have a donation available at the game as well so anything you can do to help support and all that money is going back to help families and and in one way or another so um we are purple so yeah purple is kind of the universal cancer and so you know a lot of people do the pink for breast cancer and obviously people affected with that but you know there's just so many different kinds of cancers and we try to do purple to make people understand that it's not just one that affects lives there's many different ones that affect and um you know obviously with our moms and breast cancer that kind
of thing my mom had a varying cancer which is a teal color um but we just felt like when when there's so many out there affecting so many different people the purple has just been the thing that we started up north and continued down here of a way to just honor everybody who's doing with it no matter what it you know what it is and um trying to figure out a way to to raise awareness raise some money and support a good cause yeah it'll be a special like to indeed next Friday at home against referred union hats off to you guys for uh for doing this and good luck next week thanks guys appreciate it all right thank you and um enjoy the weekend we'll take a break we'll come back and more from signature dealer group on the way it's the coaches on new stock sports 94.9 ws jm a strong community is built on the people who show up for us when things go wrong for years my dad was that person and while my dad has passed away the family business he poured his heart into isn't going anywhere our trucks are still rolling and we're here for you 24-7 honoring my dad's memory the best way we know how by getting you home safe Jeff's towing a recovery we're on our way

stick coaches on news talk sports didey 4.9 w s j m from signature dealer group on apri avenue event harbor filmic dotl and wretwood kowski bread is the new girls basketball coach with our lady of the lake and hitting the ground running and you've got and you've had some various workout sessions whether on the corner up in the the weight room and how things looking you know we're getting there a lot of girls play volleyball so you know they're pushing on that season hard which I get you know they're coming down the home stretch you know but the goals are simple if you if you want to do something different you got to or if you want to win more and do something different you got to do different and so the waiver actually is gone better than I thought it would that's good they've gotten a lot more efficient on the workouts and the the lower body strength is not bad enough for body is way behind probably about two three grades so that part is is working out so you know talking to the other assistant coaches playbooks gotta be ready by November 1st so we're getting those things lined up we're fortunate we got a scout
force which you and I have talked about former coach in the area who wants to be doesn't have the time to be at practices but loves the game of basketball and it's gonna be our advanced scout and make sure we have scouring importance on all of our opponents and you know what's interesting the BCS being such a small school and you know there's more than anybody especially in a girls basketball signed teams dropping and we've already lost two conference games with Howard's vote of the hours will not be able to pull a team together which is kind of surprising because they can go down to seventh grade right but not to get say six or seven girls it's just surprising because they were not bad last year yeah I know I do know they will still have middle school girls basketball yeah um maybe you know the route they want to go was just keep that group together yeah I get it develop them as they as they get older but yeah there's a lot of excitement yeah we're still you know a little bit more than halfway through the fall season there's
already a lot of excitement for Rose basketball our lady the lake no we hope so I mean we gotta get competitive that's the first step and we were fortunate we had a good summer we got a lot of practices in we had competition for attendance here to me everything's a competition there's a competition for fall attendance we were fortunate to go to Michigan team camp plates a school of 1500 played the school of 800 did very I think we split with those and we played a powerhouse South Christian school out of Detroit and really played that was really good game I think we lost by four wow but that to me was that we played better in that game than we did against the team that we'd be out of Detroit and that was really not with much of an offense we focused a lot more on the defense because defense can create offense especially in high school girls basketball a lot and that's what we want to strike really focus on and then the offense will be a in process
any offense that I thought we would run I'm not gonna run that I brought in one of the things as coaches know you got to you got to put together an offense that fits your talent right and so we're gonna go from a less methodical man offense to a very active very aggressive dribble drive because we've got plenty of ballhanders we've got plenty of shooters we've got really good size you know for a school mean so small and that includes brace christian and we go six feet five ten five ten down low that we we've got guards from five three to five ten on the wings and nice part of it is which is unusual right now and girls sports is I think from most of the girls basketball is their favorite sport and so which is which is nice yeah it is you are playing travel ball you know all within control it doesn't need to be hog wild but they're doing the things
that are important and for our workout today the girls were told to bring a oven glove to the workout so that that'll that'll be put out in their good hand okay taped which forces them to use or weaken oh okay and so it's kind of hard to shoot and dribble yeah oven glove so I have you take video yeah we'll be fun to watch yep we had one pair of sass if a winter glove could work on my foot course so yeah we're excited I think we picked up a I think a phenomenal middle school coach coming in and she's good really good and I don't care what anybody says you don't have good middle school coaches you will not have good high school because middle school coaches will determine if kids stay in the program or get ran off in the program but this young lady a my since she's got kids like nine and seven her daughter came to the little lake her camp
she's gonna be a huge blessing I think that middle school program and you know with our assistants with Kevin McLaughlin who did an outstanding job with the middle school girls bringing them up they are ready for varsity which is hard that person ready for varsity Jim Pajan his daughters are with it and Elinor Marquit as good as staff that I've ever had well okay I said there's a lot of excitement already and we just got into early October oh and we're trying to fill that game with Howard's Hill with Marcellus yep and I talked to the co-oper coach game oh okay let's and I and when I talked I'm like let's I've been in your shoe there's not the bangers on 21 I get you know and I understand to be respectful of your opponents all right we'll take a break we come back we talk twin cities sharks football it's next a news talk sports 94.9 WSJM here's Natalie Bajillo president of Carwell Health in Southwest Michigan our urgent care and

their way filmic Donna Brett Lukowski Tony Balbo and coach of the Twin Cities sharks joining us the sharks falling to a tobridgeman last night and we mentioned during the other break that first half highly competitive but it was almost a tale of two halves last night it was I thought we played pretty well to start the game we were right with them I think the I think what really deflated our balloon was giving up that touchdown right before the half you know we were we had just scored and we kicked short thinking that with only about 10 or 12 seconds left we'd be able to hold them and then they get a big play so they scored on one play and I think that might have just mentally deflated our balloon right then an air and then that can happen because we had to momentum going in a half to right and then we give it right back so second half they beat us
physically that was a main that was the biggest thing they didn't do anything to us that we didn't expect but we just didn't handle it they physically took us to the wood shed and I had a chance to referee bridgeman they are a team that has spent a lot of time in the waiting room yeah they are good they are good size I got again them credit all across the board right and when I say good size I'm not talking over ears no I'm talking they're built they're built I mean they they've got they've got a not a lot of monster sized kids but they are thick and they the guys that look small on film they are physically strong that's what we're going to have to improve on this offseason as we're going to have to get guys more committed in the waiting room did you notice any effects that happen a week layoff no no good it might have been might have been mental I mean just getting in that back in that routine from one week off really to one back on but I don't
you know physically I don't think it mattered we were as prepared as we could possibly be and I guess that we had two weeks to prepare for him and nothing they did nothing that we even did less than we expected and we we just it was just a physical thing it's one hankens had a monster came he did grand hired our offensive line blocked well you know you know LJ skaters Corey Hutchinson Tristan Blackwell they did awfully well South Rhyan was without standing as a blocker at the tight end spot it hurt us losing Jordan Robinson it's somewhere in that first quarter I don't know how long he's going to be out but that's going to be a big hole to fill what was that they were checking his lower leg yeah he went he ended up going to the hospital I texted him this morning I haven't heard back from him so hopefully he's okay so Jordan if you hear me hope you're doing well buddy exactly yeah no it was it was definitely a physical ball game
and they again kicked it into higher gear in the in the second half but despite the score there were some really nice individual efforts on your part last night I thought so you know I thought we went toe to toe with him for most of that game yeah it's just you know we had some mental breakdowns you know we I think we mentally self-destructed and what we didn't know all our assignments very well got us in positions we were down a couple of different times inside their red zone and we self-destructed because we weren't sure what we were doing it was that the pressure of the moment getting to him I don't think so I think you know they were they were where I wanted them to be all week I think yeah but it's just a you know just a matter of being more committed to studying the playbook and make sure you know what you're doing I think well that's something we're going to improve on this week maybe I mean part of it's
my fault I probably went a little bit too far with the game plan in fact I know I know I know I know I did so that's on me from my aspect of maybe having too much in it or yeah yeah I get that probably too much yeah and I think that's one the hardest things for coaches not to overcoach you know you you want so much but then hard part is trying to remember that they can only take so much a few times this year I've I've equated it to be in at the buffet getting up getting you and I know that one that's right you see you have you're done after we go through you leave now you know you go you get four hours you know you you see the buffet you're there free you're hungry and you see everything that you eat me you get stuffed you get you got to walk away we could be in a little probably get John Pettat y'all he is hilarious probably get a letter on
that I'm just quoting I'm not saying you can't sue him he's dead yeah right unfortunately he's craved maybe we need to get buffet he's in buffet to be one of our sponsors there you go that's their fries incredible I'm ready to jump right now man we'll take a break more coming up talking to the city sharks football head coach Tony Valbo joining us here at signature jadeel group it's the coaches on news talk sports 94.9 WSJM FM Beton Harbor St. Joe ABC News I'm Chuck Sea Richardson sources familiar with the investigation tell ABC News that the co-pilot accused of attacking the captain on an Israel bound flight and trying to crash the plane was an Omani national barred from flying in his country's airline because of extremist views pilot speaking out ABC's Alex Stone captain smith mature telling India's prime minister quote I said to myself while I was getting beaten this is a last push smith do it somehow I

I mean it's like a hundred twenty five. Yeah neither a buffet. No they're not you got to get your money's worth. Tony Balbo headed coach of the Twin Cities sharks joining us the sharks falling to a bridgeman last night we mentioned the individual effort of Dwan Hinkins also Jackson Dill did
what he does well I mean he does a lot of things well but another kick return last night. Yeah and he scored on a long touchdown reception he does he does everything for us he has been just spectacular and the thing about him especially offensively I can put him at any skill position including quarterback I mean he we ran reverse pass and he threw it perfectly we just didn't come up with the reception I mean it was right on the money and he threw it you know coming downhill was on target it was had momentum we just couldn't couldn't come away with it and you know he knows all the plays from all all four other positions and he could run the offense right now if I asked him to heck I could probably put him on the oil line and he'd do it and he cuz he's fierce and we had an unfortunate incident in school yesterday where we had to you know discipline one of our
players and you know he was our middle linebacker and we said let's put Jackson in there to replace him even though he hadn't practiced it there much so and he stepped in he did a heck of a job when when asked to call in so we can he's just he's our slash in on both sides of the ball and you know we hadn't practiced much on kickoffer terms this week is that that Winsle kid from Bridgeman has a boomer of the leg we didn't even expect to have it in our returns he's not the best kicker I've seen all over I mean he's over not in the end zone through it through it with the win that is back you know I told Jackson just taking nap you ain't get a return but when he they squib it a couple of times into the wind and he picked it up and and took off so he can do a lot of things for us no get that's one of the reasons why he's a captain yeah the only downside of Jackson is a senior yeah well we'll talk to we'll talk to Grace and see if they can hold him back you know
you know fail a couple of classes next semester he'll be fine well they're doing NCA I think play eight years sure can why not a fifth for high school to classes like to quarterback and Miami last year yeah no good remember he's like I don't go class no way yeah I'm I'm a special case you know I the way things are going I wouldn't be surprised if they granted kids high school in high school fifth year I wouldn't I wouldn't I wouldn't put a past schools to do that you know the way the way there's so much money involved I wouldn't I wouldn't all about money yeah and what you know they've already started in I L in the high school level now too it's just just terrible so I think you know in Florida you know how Michigan's transfer will you set a year which I think is a good rule in Florida they don't they got her away with that you go play I'm gonna use our lady for football then switch to ML for basketball and then switch to St. Joe for track an education component that people have been so worried about their relevant sadly college and it's
gonna spread to high school you know they got a lot of those athlete factories down in Florida and they get a few in Texas in California it'll spread and that's an unfortunate thing we're forgetting what academics are about you know we run our study table three times a week I don't want them to forget that our kids have been outstanding really working hard getting their classwork done we we've had three or four kids that had struggled last semester at their school right now they're they've all improved their grade point by at least a half a point just by doing this so awesome yeah I'm so proud of those kids you yourself you're my student yet we we work at St. Bernard's three times a week right before practice and the kids have taken it seriously our captains have done a good job leading it and I'm very proud of that I'm proud of the kids for working hard yeah no you should be proud of it it's a it's a great thing yeah I did study Taiman College and then got off him and screwed up and then go back they have it always for freshmen most sure yeah and then I get to go back as a junior well who else showed a lot last night and again against Bridgman is tough as they are
Noah Herpes does an awful lot of good things with the football at the quarterback position yeah when you go through a game like this you don't want to look at the stats I mean because they're irrelevant at this point but I'm pretty sure if you look at his completion percentage it's probably lousy but he threw the ball offly well he ended the head of the offense well he we had a lot of drops and we had a lot of missed route assignments so you know Noah is you know he there's a lot of hype amongst other quarterbacks on our schedule you know we watch out for this quarterback watch out for this one I think Noah is completely underrated and they think they're gonna see heading in the next year just how good he really is he's probably a student of the game oh yeah he knows everything he knows that just like Jackson he knows not only his own responsibilities he tells everybody else we're to line up when they're right when they're wrong you know I can I can probably hand him
the playbook say you call it from the huddle and maybe jump in a couple I've been tempted a couple of times to do that I'm I even last night I thought you know we if we want to run some no huddle in the next couple of weeks you know just hand him the wristband and say go ahead and run it take a few nice thing for you as I coach you got an extra adds absolutely right and you know you got good depth with the quarterback spot don't you go I am with Kelly got he played a quarterback in a few plays last night he was he was very solid you know and you know I guess that I can put Jackson in there in an emergency and we got a freshman quarterback Jack Medevek who is and we got to put some weight on him but he has been very solid on the JV team so quarterbacks here are not a problem you mentioned Mckelly Galino there's another reversal ball player for you no matter where you put him yeah he he is uh I'm sure he's listening to this Mckelly you're a pest he is in my ear he's you know I'm not moving him from
from his defensive spot at corner he's he is a solid corner but offensively you know he's he wants to play coach can I play quarterback coach can I play receiver can I play running back and I play tight end and if I've got to put somebody in there which we had to do in Jordan with down last night he's he's right there and playing playing tight end then when I've wanted to spread it out get in the slot get it X and he and he and he'll run it Jackson Noah and Mckelly all three I'm pretty much can know the entire offense yeah real quickly before you let you go Matt Williams and another a couple of really nice catches especially a touchdown one yeah he is you know you don't you know he's he's a he's a shorter slider receiver well he's mainly with the C position he's in he's another Swiss army knife because we had we lined the C position up
all over the field and he knows where to line up and he'll he not only blocks well he he runs routes well he he doesn't have great speed but he gets open and he and Jackson both have outstanding hands you know he's he those two are going to be a big loss going in next year right but the nice thing about when I roster with 28 kids on it we're gonna lose five they're gonna be it's sore losses but we got 23 coming back yeah and if you get some out of middle school just another season of being able to have a JV squad yeah Tom Barnes has done a great job running the run of the middle school program the kids down there are four and oh or five and oh something like that and they've got a lot of eighth grade is coming so futures looking bright right so the sharks fall to a bridgeman last night next up a home match up against Van Buren that'll be next Friday night at Cohn sports complex in Stevensville and it's well again the season's flying by
I'll be the last home game of this season yeah and you know I want to I want to say real quick I was very proud of that we get a great attendance from our student body from all four schools yeah I asked for a blackout and we got a lot of a lot of kids out in black and fans out in black so and they were loud so thank you all for coming out and come out one more time for I guess just my process of elimination to be seen your night yeah and you know we still got a lot to play for we're gonna play for the outright conference title next week you know we come out with with a win over Van Buren we'll have the conference title and I think it's the first one that the sharks will have ever had so got a lot to play for you so come on out and support us again we appreciate what you guys did last night yeah it was a great turn out all right so and again next Friday at Cohn Sports Complex in Stevensville it's Twin Cities and Van Buren enjoy the weekend I will the Irish win yeah that'll make it a better weekend the rest of it's work we'll take a break

the coaches on news talk sports 94.9 ws jm from signature dealer group on e-cray avenue in vettenhover want to thank sander case bakery and cafe for the breakfast danishes the halloween cookies the i've had three coach will you help me oh yeah definitely will definitely will yeah but one free change of different barragis only had one i don't know if you feel all right if you okay Roger okay Tom was only here for a short time and so he's not going to be able to it's for take much but hey you know what he didn't take one to barb oh he he hasn't left you so oh yes also don't forget about the outside of the danishes and in the breakfast favorites at um sander case bakery and cafe their lunch sandwiches they have plenty to choose from the hot grill uh sandwiches breakfast sandwiches as well people rave about um you know some of the uh sandwiches denny doc i can't remember which one the day i got any doc sandwich we were suggesting
that they name one after all okay i don't know if they have yet or not but uh it's not a bad idea so yeah in sander case bakery and cafe it's more than just breakfast favorites check him out film like Donald Brett Winkowski and Robert Cuba head coach of the Benton Harbor Tigers joining us here at signature dealer group the the tigers fall to north point Christian last night it caught you you followed that up with a you know from oh yeah went over Oakland Christian let's you know quickly just reverted that one as well you know it just talked about the effort on both sides of the ball and they came against Oakland Christian and that's one of those ones where everything finally clicked it was uh it wasn't even i opening it was one of those ones that ate this is what like i said before this is what happens when you actually do your one eleven and once they started realizing that it was like okay this is what we're supposed to defensively flying around defensive we having fun in flying around and that's what they were doing and offensively it started clicking for our running backs they got it together really fast and that's one of those things that those
guys we got to keep pushing and once the run game was going past game opened up tremendously for us and i saw where you moved that very was because of injury to the quarterback yeah and i think it was one of those ones he took a leadership role in that step and said hey i feel like i can make that that adjustment and that was one of those things that i felt comfortable putting them in that position any comp his confident young man oh yeah oh yeah to make that kind of conversation as a sophomore and make that jump that's a huge leadership move any key individual performances in that ballgame torrents ellis huge running game a couple of couple catches out the backfield um you had uh those a couple others zabir uh receiver he he made a big time couple catches down the road and in the beginning going down the sideline uh few other guys i would say overt is franklin huge running night that night and then defensively all our guys really flew around they were all flying around on the ball and then uh yeah that was about it really for you and we had you on back in the
string you move from your position and you're ramparts and you physically moved everything down to bet and harbor because you want to be a head coach how did it feel for you to look up the store board yeah it was like that wing is credit well and that's one of those things i like i told them i was like in at the end of it yeah it'll be on my name for a win but this was your guys just a win you guys earned this you did that yep you know on for we've been fighting fighting all day just to get there get to that point and then once it finally happened i was like you guys earned this and i was like i can do it we can do all the play calling and everything has nothing to do with me on the field and you guys went out there and physically took this from them and got the job done and that's something that we can do every night like i keep telling them it's just we need you guys to keep staying focused and locked in yeah and you you know the potential that you had oh yeah oh yeah it encouraged the guys as much as possible but you know the potential is there and you finally saw it undistinguished and it's one of those things that we just got to keep
pushing them and keep pressing forward and just understanding that hey you got to keep it fun but also we got to stay on them and just keep it strict the man when it needs to be because there are times where you know the penalties were happening where it could have been a lot more and that's something that i said we had to clean up and then when you look back at it it's like okay it's a couple that we got caught but there's somewhere it's like okay that shouldn't happen like come on like all right it went back and forth so then it's like all right let's clean it up and focus on next week and so yeah as in sweet like i said for this Friday yeah i got to imagine locker room was quite loud after oh yeah it was one of those ones where you could tell the energy was better yeah vibes wherever it was all good everybody was happy but also said that's just one of many that can happen if we do our job yeah when you get a win like that i mean not only a sizeable win but first one of the season contrast now this past weeks practice compared to what you've seen in the past i mean did you see a little bit something different coming up a little bit more anti and then it i mean it didn't help one time we didn't have school during the week so it's
kind of like trying to flip the schedule so it's like all right trying to get the guys there and be like hey this is what we got to do but other than that like they were flying around doing what they needed to it's just we have to we can't take that one win and say okay that's it right by all season oh we're good no we got to continue to build on top of that and that's something that guy we were starting to understand it and they're realizing it yeah go ahead so i was gonna say i can just imagine the weeks practice yeah you know you you almost get more of their attention and it's working yeah pay more attention and then you got a couple extra guys they're like oh okay that's where okay let me try and hop in and make something happen it's like yeah that's fine but we don't need you to just make a play there's a reason why the play is structured the way it is i don't need i need you to run a million large down the field it's a reason why we're going short and getting it out there and making that happen so yeah and then your game last night you lead going yep going in the half time yep and that's one of those ones eight to seven and it was it was a hard fought hard fought the first half it was one of those ones where we going back and forth
and you know there were moments where they they caught us where they shouldn't have caught us and then going into that second half and it was just like adjustments were made but i think they they kind of made that extra adjustment and caught us on the back end and that's something that you know i messed up on a call where i should i i was looking at the clock wrong thinking it was third and it was fourth down and i made the the wrong call on it and that was on me like i told my guys that's on me that's nothing that you guys did you guys did what you're supposed to do and you were going out there playing like at the end of the day that lost like i tell them every time those losses when they come out yeah you guys played it but i could have made a better adjustment in call for it to put you in a better situation and so once that happened once i saw it i said dang i got to fix that yeah and it just like dang yeah i just like dang it and i got to fix it and then i'm looking at them i'm like hey if we get it back let's figure it out we know what we got to do and readjust so batten hopper again last week uh routing Oakland Christian following short against north port and christian last night will take a break more coming up when head coach

national parks dot org slash trailblazers the coach is a new stock sports 94.9 WSJM from signature to a group on they three avenue Benton Harbor also brought you in part by parrot company compare it to parrot film McDonald Brett Wood Kowski Robert Cuba head coach of the Benton Harbor Tigers Benton Harbor following to a North Point Christian last night in in North Point is this their first or second year playing 11 man think it would be their second second second I believe yeah yeah what it would what do they do well um I would say honestly they they stick to their their game plan in the jet motion trying to get those guys outside and that's one of those things where if your guys aren't containing outside they're gonna catch you and so they're gonna stick to that and that's one of those things where you just gotta keep fighting when that's really it and you know they they that's a program you know even when they were eight man they're consistent in what they do so that's a program like I said they've been established on what they've
been doing so at some point it's gonna break and they just needed a chance what have you seen over let's say last three weeks improved with the Tiger program because sometimes well I think a lot of times when you're a new head coach and you're what third or fourth coach in three years the first few weeks it's like a first date over and over like that movie 50 first dates where every day but time you get to I think third fourth or fifth game things start subtle now yep where are you seeing the improvements that you like in Benton Harbor offense and defensively I'd say defensively our DB linebacker core getting way more consistent flying around to the ball making sure they're understanding where they need to be offensively I would say our running backs are really starting to establish themselves receivers as well and then making that that switch at QB and it's not even just saying our QB before that wasn't making a habit it was just no not putting them in certain positions where he needed to succeed and that's just looking at
it from overall scale and then making the switch and then them being able to be okay look I know we're doing and I know what you're thinking okay this is where I got to adjust to it and so I say quarterback play as well helped out big time and yeah in spite despite the loss I mean before that and you're you know scoring six points a game then 54 last week 16 last the last night you're seeing this offense make some strides yep and that's one of those things to where you look at it and it's just like it's there the the plays are there they're going to be there all the time it's just now we have to continue to be consistent and that's the part where I'm continuing and preaching to the guys it's consistency at practice consistency in the classroom and it helps out in the long haul because if I can depend on you in your classrooms I can depend on you on the field uh-huh so your playbook how is it either grown or contracted during this season um so beginning you know we had it and then as of now it's simple to where correct we find our 10 that we know
that's gonna work and we drill those all week and then I'll talk to the quarterback and it's just hey what do you feel comfortable if we add anything else in so then he's able to look at and say okay this is what I want to do is I want to adjust to it and then my running backs they're always like hey can we fly if we got a pop out can I pop out on this one just give it a extra pass player if the play goes crazy so on your case it's kind of gotten less is more yeah less is more and then keeping it simple so then we and we and we drive on like I said our run game I said I would want to keep that run game going because at some point it continues to break down the D-quins and then at that point then we can start airing it back out you know I know no you don't have a JV team this year I know your numbers improved a lot um how do you keep them engaged yeah so especially freshmen I know you have a young team this period I mean seniors you have I think it was six or seven okay yeah so you got a young team this period how do you keep them engaged and practice and games because it may not be seen a lot playing time and that's the one where guys
have to understand that when you're at practice and you're not at practice that's kind of dictate a lot of things like and then also guys that do come in and they're they're you're in a position battle with somebody that may be a little bit better than you so you got to figure out what can you do to improve to get into that role to where you can get more playing time and I tell people I don't try to I don't try to be biased or anything but when you're looking at it on the scale of outside looking in you got to be able to say hey if I'm not doing what I'm supposed to do every day till Thursday I can't be mad when it comes Friday night and I'm not getting in on the field but then that's where special teams is make it impact on special teams say hey I know the older guys are are on offense and defense let me hop on special teams and go make plays yeah because at some point hey we see you doing that and you're making a lot of tackles on kickoff hey let's throw them in on defense a couple times see what he does yeah so and then a lot of the younger guys I try to tell them they got to fly around we have to you got to be I have to always be seen you doing something and not just sitting in the background because if you're sitting in during scout team and
you're not in on scout and I got to put another older guy out there a junior or sophomore that's a problem yeah so and that's one of the things where if you're flying even during practice you're flying around during scout team that you start to see that right now I'm starting to see you in the in the group and now I can start moving you around yeah it's natural I mean every kid wants playing time but you know you got to realize what you're doing during practices equally in support I mean I didn't want playing time at basketball when I played that was coaches this is why it because he looked at me on the bench I go no you don't want to do that so like in the NBA and the WMBA they'll have DMV did not play yeah it's Phil had a lot of those oh yeah but you know you mentioned practice I mean my brother was my initials yeah for me you're not practiced you're not starving yeah and I played with four players and that's and that's the and that's the top part of the reality of it for me it's just trying to understand that even with that a lot of the guys in certain positions they can't play in that group so I got a I got a adjust and adjust the
things outside of school yeah and that's the top part and that's the tough part about it and so just trying to keep it as consistent and I guess that offensively simple as possible because I don't want to overload and say hey this is what we threw in and then they're just like well wait a minute we had all that over there now we're doing this and it's like that's all I got to keep it as simple as possible I mean you guys in the first year head coach you're seeing everybody for the first time but you know hopefully scheduling the wise for betting hard we're playing an independent schedule you'll see like Barion Springs to Wajab you can't it on a regular basis but there's got to be a lot of teams where you know you're playing somebody you're unfamiliar with but the Genesees one of them yeah got them coming on yep and so that's one that's one where I think I didn't I didn't check if they got the W last night or anything but I think they're they're going to be coming in and that's a consistent team I know they were three two we lost uh 60 to zero oh okay well well we still got to get to the film and make sure we understand why they lost and be able to and do that take advantage on it and so that's one of those things to where our guys have to be
able to understand hey we can do this it's just you guys have to now take hold of it I can give you all the tools and everything to go build it you're not willing to build it I can't I can't do anything about it so I can't go off and say hey this is what we're doing oh we're gonna go make this play go make this play but then you don't show up and don't do what you're supposed to then it's a tough thing so yeah yeah just got to clean it up get ready watch film get with the coaches and then you know we talk on what we got a game plan and then talk to the guys and let them know hey this is what we're doing and then go from there you as a player don't look at that final score no no no no no no that's what I'd say you never you never look at the scores of who we who got beat or who were getting ready to play they lost if they won because at the end of day it's a new Friday so it's something could change and they could catch us or we catch them so it's like we got to be on all our p's and cues before we get to Friday spend Harbor following to North Point Christian last night gonna be home against Genesee that'll be Friday night at seven o'clock at Phil's
Revealed yep it's a tough thing to do with the size of the stands but we can pack to play yep so that is five thousand seats now and this is the thing it's homecoming that night okay yeah it's a it's a homecoming that's a spectacle yeah so it's gonna be one of those ones I they said I haven't you know experienced a bit in our room coming so it's one of those ones we got a we got to take take advantage of what's gonna happen so all right good luck thank you thank you thanks again yeah thank you all right nice to see not as much great here yeah we'll take a break we'll go back and we'll talk Michigan Lutheran volleyball next on news talk sports 94.9 WSJM core conversations with Natalie Bajillo dives deep into the heart of health care exploring the people ideas and innovations that shape how we care for our communities in this special best of episode of core conversations Natalie Bajillo looks back at some of the memorable conversations personal stories and important health topics featured throughout the podcast

I say off to they were past being off to because of what stretch yeah what 18 4 and 1 yeah congratulations on the season so far yeah it's been a really great season it's fun they're fun to watch so it's been enjoyable with the more you win the fun or it is yeah definitely for sure is it a pretty veteran team or is there a nice mix we actually I only have one senior in the team Sophia and she's from Brazil actually she's just playing this year just to have some fun learn a new game that's awesome but really I have junior heavy so I have lots of juniors one two three six juniors on the team and then some sophomores too so we actually are going to be solid for a couple years here because I don't lose much so it's it's nice that's awesome yeah and I think I've watched a couple of your matches on network you don't have like a big badge no a lot of which is which is fine yeah sometimes I think they'll overwrite the badge yes that one football I need a
badge but no other sports you necessarily don't know so for a lot of your girls they're playing all the way around yeah most of my girls are playing all the way around I'm using Libero for going in out for just a couple of my players but then the rest of them are going all the way around yeah so they're just good overall players in every position based on the talent you knew you were going to have is this the where you're at right now again 18 4 and 1 did you kind of expect it I know I knew we were going to do well we ended strong in region game against St. Phil I knew Menden was impressed with us they we added a lot of good conversations with Menden in St. Phil after the region games and so it was I knew that we were going to have some really good potential but they've just come out on fire and just excited to be there and they have really high goals and so I think that's what's kind of pushing them because they got the taste of region last year and now they went okay let's keep going let's let we can do this this is not out of our like we
can do it we can 100% keep going in regions and and set some high goals so who do you bring with here this morning I brought Ila Hendrickson and Amelia Elder they're both my captains they're both juniors as well Amelia's got her nails painted for dig pink all made yeah that's coming up this week right yep we have Wednesday we have we're playing our lady at our place and it's the JV's playing countryside and then Varsley's playing our lady so we're going to big night with dig pink and it's a conference game as well so it's always becomes a pretty good exciting night yeah you've had a lot of non-conference matchups so far this year so it's kind of nice to get back into conference play isn't we haven't had many conference so it's been kind of I've been watching like Indiana games and going wow their conference is done they only have two more games in their conference and here we are have yeah we have tons more conference games left so it's interesting that that's just how the schedule is working Ila and Amelia coach mentioned how fun the season
spin like I said the more you win the more fun it is but maybe for you guys we just talk about how you think the season's gone yeah the win usually does help I just really like the season like how it's been going especially because we're back to back champions at the Bridgeman tournament which I was really excited about we we undefeated this year at the Bridgeman tournament and can you say else no ila what do you think has been the key for you guys this year coach mentioned what you did in the postseason last year has was that kind of a driving force for you guys getting ready for this year yeah I think that was really good to have go into that regional game we're just such a well-like talented team and I think getting there has really helped us like I don't like playing these big games and these big like matches throughout the season and against these bigger schools when you guys I mentioned you know a lot of non-conference what I mean my
non-conference to as well as Saturday tournaments do you guys like I mean because those could be long days especially as well as you guys are playing you're probably playing in many of the championship matches those are long days aren't they but you know what it helps if you win it does do you like playing in those ila I do I love playing in like those more competitive matches against especially the bigger schools i'm really good about you i mean like i said long day but do you like that yeah i actually really love playing in Saturday tournaments especially because i'm already so used to it from travel season that it's just like part of me now like let's do it right you know coach with your team having this success when you play teams of less caliber no knock to them you know i've seen teams and players really fall to that level and get a little sloppy as some how do you try it and make sure it doesn't turn into a bad practice it can really it can fast
but we try to set goals then for ourselves so we want to hit the ball to a certain area on the court and that's going to be our goal every time you swing or we're going to serve to short ball every single time so that we were focusing on a certain task so i try sometimes it doesn't quite work that we're hoping but for the most part if i can just set some goals for them and keep them focused on those specific things then it tends to go a little better and then for you you know looking at your your nine conference schedule last week playing uh St. Joe and we can and our lady down at the you can't inquire and then i see later on you head up to my pleasant which is traditionally good yeah um what do you look for in trying to set your nine conference schedule because you as Phil mentioned a ton of nine conference game yeah right now with the team that i have um i want to play bigger schools i'd like to play bigger more competitive schools because when we do get to regions we see really good teams um so we are trying to prep ourselves for the bigger game the
the better game so i'd like to i like to play outside of our area too um because sometimes you get in a pattern of playing in the same tournaments playing against the same teams so that's this year we're going up to mount pleasant um trying something different and playing outside of our area so hoping um to see even some other schools even in division four um like um up pleasant sacred heart it would have been it'd be great if we could see them up there because i know they're ranked in like the top five as well um i don't know if they're going to be at the tournament for sure but just trying to get outside of and see other schools and you read aero the combination of new buffalo and uh river valley is in the conference but you haven't played them in conference because i yeah and i see that you can play them like four times it's like you know you can find another tournament to go play in or something right and that's and that's kind of why you know talk to my athletic director and say can you get us outside of the area a little bit just not that i don't mind playing all the same teams but after a while like okay we're playing them again so it's nice to just kind of branch out and see what other things we can do
island amelia for you has there been a do you think like a seasoned defining match that you've won so far one that you you think and what hey this shows how good we can actually be or actually are um i think the same joke game because we were so close to winning it was like 2325 and i was like wow guys we're actually really good we almost beat them so yeah i agree with that yeah yeah it was i think what uh st. Joe was 25 23 25 21 you played in top really tough yeah and they played well um when we played them so we i know they're good um but then when you play those better teams and then they rise the occasion and even though we have a loss i'm okay with that because it did show us where we need to work what we need to focus on um and that we can be competitive so it was fun talking michigan lutheran valibol will take a break more coming up from signature dealer group it's the coaches on news talk sports 94.9 ws jl at united federal credit union our checking

an event in harbor also brought to you and far by insurance management service your local auto owners insurance agency film a dot obrette wakashi we're talking michigan Lutheran uh volleyball and uh again the tight the the titan sitting at eighteen four in one on the season coach for you as there been kind of like a season defining mass that you've seen from your team um i do think the st. Joe game was pretty pretty cool for us um to be competitive um i don't know if i've had that while moment yet um i know that they're good they know that they're they're doing well um so i'm actually looking forward to some of our other things coming up um so like i like they said the mountain pleasant tournament that's where i think i'm i'm hoping that we'll see a while moment that we're going to be competitive outside of our area um but i don't know if i have one particular moment in my head right now is red arrow going to mow pleasant too i don't think so i don't think so you can't it is we played them both so much this year already oh yeah you know coach
teams usually know when they're good or not i mean they do um then when you get ranked teams and things like that a lot of times that's good to talk for the the parents and stuff like that and fans how do you then work to try to keep the mindset realistic and focused on the next game not into the rankings not that you you know those type of things for that and and goal that you have um i actually was a little nervous to even talk to the girls about being ranked right now because i didn't want that to go to their head and then be like oh we're good and we're um but i think i keep pushing them as do you want to stay ranked if you want to stay ranked you guys have to actually work hard um do you want to beat st. Phil in region um then you actually have to push yourself and some days some practices are a little bit harder than others um depending on who our our games are that week um sometimes they kind of get a little goofy or or whatever which is typical of girls anyways um but trying to stay focused on that is been a little bit of a struggle
just to make sure that they they know we got big games coming up and we really do have to keep our minds um pushing forward um me you mentioned you know playing uh travel um volleyball is all but outside of volleyball at Michigan Lutheran any other sports or clubs or activities in your evolved with um yeah so i actually play basketball and softball and then i'm part of global so like i go around our area with the international kids that live in our dorms and do stuff with them okay all right i'll look for you anything outside of volleyball yeah i also play travel on the same team as her okay i play basketball i'm in track and then i'm on student council and global and bands a lot of things you mentioned global too do you have uh any or many international students on the on the team um so i have so fio who's a senior um she's from brazil and then i have a manager her name's livia she's also from brazil um and then i have a girl jettie we call her jettie but she's from the kongo she's playing on jv this year okay um but yeah so we do have a handful of
girls who um like to come out and just experience something different and so we give them opportunities as much as we can and you're limited i think how many can play bars yes but they're not limited to play jv's or no jv it's it's acceptable yeah um i know cool as if you uh to his students to you know have the international students at the admission of your Lutheran you get to meet so many different students from different countries different cultures and all that that's gonna be a cool experience for you guys yeah i really enjoy learning about their culture and then giving them a little bit of ours yeah like i really enjoy making friends with them especially because they're all really nice like that's just like not i feel like that's not the norm and they're all just coming here and they're also welcoming and nice and i just make a lot of friends with them yeah second of marriage you know coach with that said and i found this for us at ml the language bearing and terminology that you use and you girls understand
i found they have no clue what you're talking about right so do you have to back it off at times with them not to hold the team back but just back it off in them a little bit yeah there are certain situations where the explanations are different um yeah yeah just re-explained things are even just show um instead of always talking sometimes just showing them what we're talking about helps a lot too so sometimes there are some of those language barriers so busy week coming up again you guys you'll play what back to back is it Tuesday Wednesday Tuesday Wednesday and then we are going to the bearing springs tournament on Saturday yep so Tuesday on the road at Buchanan yeah again you again so yep you know what to expect there yeah it's the best of seven sir and then the dig picnic match at home against our lady of the lake on on Wednesday that's always a special event for uh for i mean both schools to come together the players the coaches you know everybody yep it's a great night um deck out the whole gym with pink the girls are
wearing pink we're selling um items that are only going to benefit um breast cancer awareness um and then they just have fun it i think the level of play always goes up a little bit more on that night from both teams because it's conference and it's just a fun night where we're just packing the gym with lots of people yeah and with that bigger crowd is it harder to communicate to your team what you want done no um they actually like the loud gym it really helps um when we don't have fans then it's harder i think for them to even be more excited on the court yeah it feels like a middle school match yeah and so when we don't have that crowd it's kind of boring for them but but then when they're able to get that crowd it they feed off of that and just thrive so yeah it should be a fun night hopefully we'll get tons of fans yeah yeah yeah it's fun to play in in front of fans in front of people pack the place right yeah right yeah yeah you guys congratulations on the season so far uh you've got some big matches coming up good luck the rest of the season too
thank you thank you thank you thank you thank you guys thanks for having us yeah so again island and merely thanks for getting up early on a Saturday they're made up man she got her nails going exactly she brought you food fill out what you want nothing good enjoy the weekend thanks thank you all right we'll take a break and come back and wrap things up from signature dealer group it's the coaches on news talk sports 94.9 ws jm here's Natalie Boschio president of corwell health in southwest Michigan our urgent care and royaltine is now open seven days a week from eight to eight our goal is to keep care local and offer same-day access to care you might wonder if I should go to an urgent care or an emergency room if you choose to go to the urgent care and you need that higher level of care our team at corwell health will be able to transfer you seamlessly learn more at corwell health dot org we're less than a month away from football's playoff selection show

the michigan achievement scholarship is funding every grad every path odds are your high school senior or recent grad will qualify for tuition free community college up to 27,500 at a public or private university or up to four thousand dollars for a trade school or career training program no matter their GPA wherever your child is headed there's free money to get them there simply fill out the FAFSA to apply get started at mi.gov slash achievement our will weekly be the referee feature takes a look at the fine art of officiating with mhs a registered official page winning we're on the volleyball court today where the home team starts to match with only six players midway through the first set one of those six players suffers an ankle injury and can't continue leaving the home team with just five players what should happen is the home team forced to default the match for not having enough players does the home team
just continue playing with five or do they continue playing with five but with the loss of rally or point every time the players lost to injuries position rotates to serve if you said they can continue playing but lose a rally or point every time the injured players position rotates to serve you are correct a minimum of six is needed to start but you can finish a match with fewer than that thanks page there are lots of reasons to get in and stay in officiating each week we hear from a current or former official and a segment called what's my why this week we hear from Ron Torber a two-time super bowl referee who's been with the NFL since 2010 and nobody else in the stadium feels what we feel and and and there's something kind of special about about being part of that very small net community and that's what kept me coming back and coming back some I don't play golf as somebody said it's like hitting that one golf shot you're not a very good golfer but you hit that one shot they've reached it back for the next round being out on the field brings me back
for the next game and once I figured out what it took to get good at it well that now I want more and that's what keeps me coming back it's always a challenge of being better next week than I was last week now more than ever we need officials if you're interested go to the mhs a website now to register and to check out other what's my wise you've been listening to this week in high school sports powered by michigan student aid a production of the mhs a network thanks for joining us here in the 1-800 call say I'm studio I'm John Ross and we'll be back next week every 16 seconds and american receives a cancer diagnosis and every minute of every day another person loses their life to cancer that's why stand up to cancer has set a bowl goal to make early stage of detection an essential part of standard of care for all cancers so often if cancers detected early the chance of long-term survival is 90 percent so if we all support cancer research more than two million
