Star News Briefing — Tax Office Scraping Credit Card Payments.. Machine-transcribed; use the interactive transcript above to jump the player to any line.
Hello and welcome to the update I'm Mike Humphrey. The Australian tax office will no longer accept credit card payments under the government's new surcharges ban. It's led to fury from business groups who say it's hypocritical not to extend the option to traders who now have to absorb the costs of processing payments. Opposition leader Angus Taylor says the move is a fast. If the Prime Minister really wants to bring crisis down, he should focus on the thing that he can control. Bring down government spending. Trade Minister Don Farrell has pitched a new investment idea to his US counterpart in a bid to head off additional tariff some exports. He's proposed using Australia's $4.8 trillion superannuation sector to invest in America's land industry, saying the funds have an obligation to serve the national interest. Jet star service staff are walking off the job in airports across the country today amid an ongoing paid dispute.
Travel chaos is likely as thousands of people prepare for Sunday's NRL grand final in Sydney. Meanwhile the Navy is dealing with a crippling maintenance shortage. Australia's two biggest warships, HMAS Canberra and Adelaide currently docked in Sydney for repairs. Overseas Police in the United Kingdom have arrested an Iranian-Jule citizen after an alleged terror incident at the near-force base in Gloucestershire. KPM Andy Berman says there's strong indications Iran was involved in plotting the botched attack. In the United States, Tennessee will halt future executions after yesterday's botched killing of a convicted murderer, Christopher Pike, who's been on death row for 30 years now recovering in hospital after receiving two doses of a lethal injection. Sport and entertainment user up next. In Sport Isaac Heney's 1-3rd consecutive Best and Furious Award for the Swans, despite a club imposed sanction which forced him to miss the last three games of the season, Heney accepting the award via video message that clubs' other four suspended players were not in attendance either.
In cricket, selectors have called in for reinforcements to cover several injuries in the Australia side ahead of the first test against South Africa. Nick Madison has earned a recall while Sam Harper has also been called up. The Knights are dismissing concerns they will struggle to back up in Sunday's NRL Grand Final against the roosters, coach Justin Holbrooke saying he has complete faith in his side and they can bring home the trophy. And Manchester City will need to lodge an appeal by day's end if they wish to contest historic breaches of financial fair play rules. The club might be dumped from the English Premier League after investigations found dodgy dealings over nine seasons. In entertainment news, seems John Mayer is a fan of Harry Styles. He's enjoyed a front row sedent Madison Square Garden for Night 16 of Harry's 30-Show Presidency in New York and the stars are out and about for Paris Fashion Week, Haley Bieber, Zoe Kravitz, Jennifer Lopez and Paris Hilton among those snapped coming in going at the infamous Hotel Cortes in Paris. And that's the latest from the Noven News podcast team.
We'll have another episode of the update for you later.
