In Sydney, it's March 7. Here's what is happening. A Sydney woman working in the illegal tobacco trade faced a nightmare when she was kidnapped and tortured during what seemed like a routine cigarette. Sale. The 37-year-old arrived at a house in Epping to sell $3,000 worth of smokes, but a group of men grabbed her, blindfolded, her, and drove her to a rented place in Eastwood. There, they beat her and injected her with a powerful date-rave drug called Buton Eddie All to force the codes for two tobacco storage sheds in Belfield. The attack unfolded quickly on April 16, 2024. The gang, led by a Victorian man, had set up the fake deal to rob the sheds packed with black market goods. They tied her up, threatened her with $300,000 in ransom, and used frantic text messages to coordinate, urging each other to act, fast before police caught on. The ordeal highlights the brutal violence in Australia's illegal tobacco market, one of the world's most profitable underground trades.
While much of the gang warfare has hit Melbourne hard, this case shows Sydney is getting pulled in too. The victim, who came from China in 2018 and lived off these sales, suffered bruises, cuts, and trauma, ending up in hospital after her. Escape. The men rushed to the sheds at 3.30am with the code, but it failed because hours were restricted to 5am until 10pm. Meanwhile, one kidnapper released her after she got a friend to hand over $6,000 in save red money. The gang fled to Victoria, but police tracked them using seized phones and intel sharing. Yan Yu Mu, the 31-year-old ringleader, got eight years in jail with a non-parole period of four years and eight months he's eligible for. Release in February, 2029. He played a guilty to kidnapping and using the drug, though courts couldn't prove he was in the room during the worst of it. His co-offenders are still facing charges.
