Oklahoma Sooners seek redemption after a tough loss to Michigan—can a power run game spark a turnaround before facing Georgia? John Williams and Jay Smith analyze why establishing a dominant ground attack against New Mexico is critical, spotlighting Jonathan Hatton, Lloyd Avant, and Torrey Blaylock as key backs to watch. The duo debates offensive balance, quarterback John Mateer's role, and how Ben Arbuckle must adapt his playcalling for success in Norman.

On defense, tackling fundamentals and disciplined play are under the microscope as Oklahoma aims to eliminate explosive QB runs and prep for SEC battles. With Georgia and Texas looming, will the Sooners' young stars like Dane Bathurst and Wyatt Gilmore step up? The hosts give SEC game predictions, dissect New Mexico’s challenge, and raise the stakes for Arbuckle’s playcalling. Don’t miss this fast-paced breakdown of Oklahoma’s must-win moment and what it means for their College Football Playoff hopes.

The Oklahoma Sooners need to make a statement this weekend. You are a Lockdown Sooner's your daily podcast on the Oklahoma Sooners. Part of the Lockdown podcast network. Your team every day. What's up, Sooner Nation? Welcome to Lockdown Sooners and thank you for making Lockdown Sooners your first listen every single day shout out to all the every day. He's Jay Smith of Unfair Sports on John Williams of Sooners, wire on today's show. We're getting you ready for Oklahoma New Mexico. A big prime time match up on Saturday night in Norman. Jay, let's start here because I think that Oklahoma I say big it. I'm being facetious. It's big to us. Okay. It's still real to us, Jay. Coming off of that lost to Michigan, man, I really feel like the Sooners need to make a big statement, especially on the offense side of the ball. Oh, no, I don't disagree with you at all. This is a very big game for the coaching staff.

They've got to prove themselves. They got to earn the trust that the people again. Because right now they do not have it. Their graces are gone. I've said it numerous times. They do not have the benefit of the doubt anymore. Even though defensively, we're on a solid pace. We are top 20 in the country in total defense and to be there in the first couple of weeks of the season while everybody else is playing cupcakes and you actually had to pay at P-14. It's not bad place to be. Right? Like you're in some good spots statistically and all of that. You're averaging more rushing yards per carry than you did last year already. So you're making progress, but you need to make bigger progress. Stop playing around. This is the game that you can go out there again. You're not going to gain all the trust back. But guess what? People might say, all right. You actually paid attention and you know what you need to do to win some of these games. Let's do it. So here's the statement that needs to be made. We're going to run the ball. And we're going to run the ball some more.

And some more and more. The U-TEP script is what I expected to see tonight. John Matur through the ball 17 times in that game. Oklahoma ran the ball 39 times. That's the kind of split I'm looking for. And not just this game. I want to see something like that the rest of the season. At least a 40 60 run or a past to run ratio. That's what I want to see. And this is an opportunity to reestablish this identity that you came out with and looked pretty good with against U-TEP. The stuff that we talked about all off season about how the run game is the priority. We're trying to take some things off of John Matur's shoulders by providing some easy yards through the run game. Do it again. Find confidence in it before you go on the road and you have to play a really good Georgia team. Because you're going to want to slow the clock down.

You're going to want to keep the ball out of Georgia's hands because that offense is pretty good. You've got to start it this week though. This is a week that you got to do it all because if you don't, yeah, you're going to be in a dog fight for the rest of the year. No pun intended. You would like to go into Georgia and make it respectable by a lot as in you need to steal the win. Because you kind of need to steal this. You need it. You need it. That helps your entire season. You steal that. You steal Texas. They need to be stolen at this point until you prove to me that you can take it automatically. Like it's supposed to be yours. So yeah, this game offensively, like I said, running the ball is going to be key. We know what new Mexico is going to do. They're going to get creative. They're defensive linemen are undersized to go look at the roster. It's it's an undersized defensive line. They're not big. And that's fine. That's not what you would have expected out of new Mexico. But they've got a good coach. They're going to come in with a good scheme.

They're going to come in and fight. Like we're going to be serious here. They don't expect to win. But they are going to goal is to steal this game. They know that this is going to be a fight with, you know, Jason X said it in his presser. He's like, we're leaving the local fast food joint. We're going to a really nice stay cast this week. And so we're going to enjoy ourselves in this nice stay cast. And he's 100% right. They're going to come in here and they're going to play hard. They're going to push us to the limits. This is a G 16 that a lot of people believe what's going to be able to represent them for the playoffs. He there are continue to continue considered to get the words out. One of the teams is there at the top. So the biggest question for Oklahoma is going to be not only offensive line play, but like you said, running the ball, taking advantage of that, getting that hot. And I guess starting with the running back room, the rotations need to be a vaunt a vaunt. I need to see hat and hat and I need to see Blale lock, Blale lock.

And we need to and whoever's making the biggest breaks, they need to be the one that takes over by the third drive. Yeah, this is a great opportunity to really get Jonathan hat and going. He only saw a few carries in that U-TEP game. If he's healthy and 100%. Let's get him double digit carries. There's no reason not to. Loid of on, we know what we're going to get out of Loid of on. When he's in the game, he's going to get you positive yardage. And he's going to get you anywhere from five to eight yards a pop a lot of times. Torrey Blale lock, we've seen Torrey Blale lock. If he's healthy, we got to get him up to speed. We got to start making sure he's a part of this offense because he is a game breaker. When he gets space, he can create big plays. Jonathan Hatton has to be a part of this offense because he's so big, he's so fast, he can create big plays with his speed, with his physicality, but you've got to get him integrated.

I know he's a true freshman. I know there's a lot on his plate. If he's one of your better playmakers, you find ways to get him involved. And if it's, hey, we're in 12 personnel and it's really obvious that we're running the football, I don't care. Just give him the ball and let him go to work because running backs like him, they can be pretty special. But you have to not be so concerned with, oh, they're going to know that we're running the ball. I don't care. If you want to be a really good football team, you have to be able to win even in situations when they know exactly what's coming. It doesn't matter if the defense knows what's coming. They still have to stop you. Make them stop you. That's the entire mindset. I'm going to run it down your throat and I would like you to try to stop me. Yes. And when they can't stop you, that's when you say, all right, we have established something that's elite. That is what you need to do.

It's no different than the past. If you have a past game that's just so elite and you're like, they're going to pass the ball. So we're going to drop seven. And you still can't stop it because the receivers are elite, the Titans are elite, the quarterbacks elite. You can do that about it. That's what you want. You want that mentality. You want that capability. And that's a big deal. So for Oklahoma, you need to continue to establish that identity as a team. That's just going to run it down your throat. And then give it to a back that knows how to cut, knows how to make something happen. Maybe we'll miss. Get those first downs. That's your starting point. Now, I am not upset if it's second and one or second and inches. And you try to take a bomb because you want to take a shot. But that's when you're supposed to do it. That's OK to take a risk there because main name looking forward. Typically, it's like, I got inches. They're going to go for the first down. You can do that.

And the third inches you get that first down. But if you continue to run, run, run, won't be mad to either. The biggest thing is don't go out there and get eight yards and then keep throwing it. If you're going to get eight, run it again. If you're going to get nine, maybe go deep real quick or run it again. But don't abandon the run. Don't go three straight plays of passing with only two yards in front of you. It makes no sense. But as you mentioned before, too, John, make sense in quarterback run. What material? He's going to need to be a runner because he's a big enough threat for it. The other thing to understand is he don't need to out rush your running backs. That's the key thing. Like no running, no, material shouldn't have more rushing y'all more, no, no more rushing attempts than any other running back on the team. I get that the mindset for being is he's been here for you in my system for years. I would like, there's games I've watched him take over when he was at Washington State.

Cool. Totally understand that thought process. Here's your problem. They know you're going to try to make him do everything. And he doesn't make all the decisions you need at all. So don't make him try to carry the team. Let the running backs carry the team. And then he can completely compliment them by not only managing the game, but also making it explode because there should be so many more openings due to that. It's like when you see a guy go from college to the NFL. And they feel like they could try to get away with the same things they were doing at the collegiate level. And then they realize, oh crap, everybody is as fast as I am. That's kind of the jump that John Matier made coming from the independent packed 12 schedule or independent Washington State schedule that he was playing to Oklahoma. There's a significant jump. Now, can you beat some of these guys? Yeah.

But it's going to be a lot harder to do that. Lean on the run game. Lean on some play action with John Matier. Let his legs be a weapon. Don't make him a pocket passer. That's where I'm at. We'll see where we go from here. What are we looking for? Word to from the Oklahoma Sooners defense. We'll discuss that next here on Lockdown Sooners. Today's episode is sponsored by Supply House. So you know, there's no choice. There's no choice. We're not talking ball having a good time. So yeah, come hang out with us. It's a great time. We, we're pretty active. I'm usually active when I'm not traveling for work, but yeah, we're very active and talking ball. So I'm come hang out with us. Come hang out. All right. Defensive expectations for this week. Jay, what do you got? Man, look, I'm I'm expecting another U-TEP performance less than 200 yards of total offense given up. I'm hoping less than that. New Mexico runs the ball a lot mainly because they had to switch quarterbacks. They're starting hers out. So you got Luke Moga and toa Favoa.

Tav, I think is Favoa is the that other quarterback. So he needs a runner too. He, he, he's a scramble. So he's going to probably be similar to more at U-TEP. And you've got to stop him. Now, of course, more was not a good thrower at all. And you go look at the numbers that confirms that against us. But he's a great scramble. You want to make sure that you prevent them from being able to scramble the way that they're going to want to. And eliminate their run game. If you eliminate their run game 100%, the game is going to get a lot faster for them and a little bit more challenging. And for us, we should be able to keep up with every single one of their receivers. Maybe should be fast enough to stay in place. And the one thing I will be watching for with a fine tooth cone, John tackling. That's it. Tackle. This is the week to get that disciplined nature of the Brent Vendible's defense back in order.

They've played undisciplined football the first two weeks, both against U-TEP and against Michigan. That's what led to some of those big plays, the big quarterback runs. And part of that is the tackling. It's being disciplined to your technique. It's being disciplined in your pursuit, being disciplined in your responsibilities, being sound. Because guess what? I already know that Georgia's going to plan for some quarterback run game with Gunner Stockton. They're going to plan for some misdirection that's going to try to get you out of your keys. This is the week to get all that back in order. New Mexico is going to try and mess you up with some eye candy. They're going to try and mess you up with a lot of misdirection. If you're going to be the defense that you think you can be, and we think you can be, and Brent Vendible thinks you can be, and you're coaching staff thinks you can be, let's get it straight. Let's play it right. Let's be not just out there trying to blow everybody up.

Not just out there trying to create all the big fancy splash plays so you can celebrate. Just go tackle somebody. Do the simple things right first, and then build from there. That's it. That's all you got to do. Do the simple stuff, and make sure you wrap up when you tackle. That's really the thing that gets me is, I just hope that everybody understand that it's very simple for you to just go out there, and focus on your technique, and make sure you're grabbing folks. I understand the big hits you want to get. Those are super cool. No, wrap up. Get them to the ground. Take care of them. I need to see our edges really get more pressure in this game. I need to see more PJ, more Danny. I need to see more wide Gilmore, more wine. I don't expect to see a bunch of wine in this game. This is a good warm up for him in preparation for Georgia, but I really need to see some Gilmore, some, and some Ocoye more in this game,

and really get them prepped because we really need to rotate for deep in that Georgia game. That Georgia line is good. They've got a really good line. Stone and Jane Jackson, when you watch the game against Michigan, they were disruptive. They were causing problems. If you're linebackers field those gaps, you're getting tackles for loss easy. You're stopping them in the back field. We were missing tackles, and they would run past the line of scrimmage and get additional yards. You can stop that by being back there, and I said, just being, like you even mentioned to John, just fundamentally sound in your play. I think you'll be fine. So, yeah, just be where you need to be and make it happen. And just slow down half a beat. There you go. I understand, man, like you play with your hair on fire, you play a hundred miles an hour, the effort is not in question. The effort is great. And I don't even want to say slow down, but just slow your mind down.

Half a tick, just a little bit. Because it's the over sped up thought process. That I think is getting this team out of position or getting this team not tackling correctly. And this is, I mean, we're saying all this stuff, this is stuff that they've heard all week from their coaching staff. This is not going to be, you know, in all this enlightened information, enlightened thought process. But if they do all that, then we can see the defense that we saw last year. It's just... And I'll be curious, man, because no Kip Lewis, will we see Cole Sullivan? Is this going to be a Marcus James, James Nesta as your second and third linebacker alongside Owen Heineke? And what does that look like? I don't know. There's some intrigue there for sure. Yeah.

There's a lot of intrigue in that. I also want to see, I actually want to see a lot more Dane Batherist, for me, be honest. Yeah. I think he's a linebacker. I want to see the more playing in this one. Yeah. Yeah. He was really good week one. Great it very well. He's great at very well this season. I want to see him a ton. Play him more. And if he's able to continue to develop and grow in that role, you just got yourself another Dany Stutzman. Like he's, he's there of the exact same build in size. He has the curly hair. So he's kind of, and I don't know if he's as funny as Stutz, but we'll see. But I like Batherist. I mean, he comes from a lineage of ridiculous athletes. It's so funny. Someone was in the comments of my channel before because me and Colin Kennedy over 247 talked about just the long lineage. And the guy basically said, hey, you don't, you don't know. You're way off. And let me, he broke it down for him. And I'm just like, oh my goodness. John, I'm a sin it to you because I'm just like did not realize this dude is just full just athlete.

The jeans are there. Play me some Dany Batherist. Not be happy. They've got some really intriguing young guys. They've got to step up. Everybody's got to step up. This is one of those games where you should win and win comfortably. And we'll discuss more of that and give you our predictions for some key SEC games next here on locked on. Sooners. If you've got a sweet suit like I do, you know how tough it is to find out. Perfect. Treat without audit sugar because that's literally my biggest problem in life. And this taste brings it back. It's got like a fruity vanilla vibe to it.

Something and. And it's a lot smoother than I thought it would be. And of course it's convenient. A little container I can grab and grab and go on the roll when I need to get a quick fix and get a quick kick to make sure that I can finish my day super strong. So bring on the sweetness. First listen every single day. Shout out to all the every day is out there. Tuna and subscribe to the show wherever you get your podcasts. All right, Jay, we got our game prediction for OUNU Mexico coming up here in just a little bit. Let's go through some of these SEC games because there are some really intriguing matchups this week.

I'm going to start with the the biggest point spreads and go to the smallest. So that brings us to Georgia Arkansas in Fayetteville. Georgia's a 24 and a half point favorite against the razor racks. That's the biggest one this week of these key SEC games. Yes. Wow. I didn't pick. I didn't pick the SEC versus G6 games, except for Oklahoma, New Mexico. So these are all SEC versus power for games. I still feel like that's still pretty low. I figure somebody would be bigger than that, but that's very respectful of Arkansas. Maybe a little too much respect. Well, no, it's on the road. So that means that they'd be like a 30-something point dog. Which that Georgia offense is humming. They've been humming. They've got our stocked in with five TDs last week. Come on. Go Bobo. Like all the Georgia fans complain about them all the time. They'll complain about them for the rest of the season. But you know, that's what I need out of Ben Arbuckle is that, you know, like some Thanos added to you.

Like fine, I'll do it myself kind of a game. Yeah, I'll do it. Yeah, finally. Please. So no, Georgia's going to blow them out. Yeah. That's going to be about nothing about Arkansas says that they should even compete in this game. Unfortunately for them. They're down bad right now. And shout out to our guys on neighbors of locked on razorbacks. I mean, he is holding it down and giving the truth and nothing but the truth over there. And they've got, they've got some big decisions to make here down the road. And we'll see what happens. We'll see if there's a straw that breaks the camel's back that causes that program to, to make some decisions. Not a Ryan civil silver field. He's in your one there, but it's a, it's a tough rebuild as Georgia in a big blowout. All right. Next Alabama, Florida state. This one is in Tuscaloosa. The, the Crimson tide are an 18 and a half point favorite. Ooh. Yes. And that's why I said that because I was surprised that they weren't higher. I actually thought that they would be higher than that. Bama wants this really, really bad. Yeah. I'm afraid that they may struggle covering the spread because I know they want this really, really bad.

They need this revenge. This, that's why that Kentucky game was so close in the first half. Yeah. Is they were, they were looking ahead to this game. They were paying attention to, uh, knowing that Florida state was on their way. And I mentioned it before. This was the trap game to one of the bigger track games because of that. Their mind was we got to be Florida state. I know we got play Kentucky. They got new coach, new staff, new business, and that other, we got to be Florida state. Right. And at first half, they stumbled, but then they bounced back. Yeah. They should, uh, they hopefully should be able to do that. Yeah. To me, if Kiel and Russell plays a clean game, this is a Bama blowout because Florida state is, man, it's such a weird place to be because I remember growing up and Florida state was just one of those programs that was just awesome. You know, even if you weren't a fan, they were so good to watch. Like Peter Warwick, work done. Dude, that incredible, incredible program. Great. Falling far from the tree.

Um, next up, we got anem and Kentucky. 16 and a half point favorite are the Aggies. Yeah, I mean, Aggies. They're humming. They're humming along without with the, with the new coaching change. But I also don't believe they've really met a challenge yet. Mm-hmm. If I'm being 100% honest, Arizona state, Kenny Dylan, him, I think that experiment's done. Well, yeah. I mean, that was a close game until a couple of pick sixes, you know, that fourth quarter. And that really is what led to that separation. I don't, I just don't think Kentucky's talented enough yet to be able to hang in a game like this. It might be a close one for a half. And then anem pulls away. I just think they're too talented. They, I mean, from Jimbo Fisher to Mike Elko, that program is recruited at an incredibly high level for years. Yeah. So it is stocked. It just needed the right man at the helm. Yep. That's all they need it. And I think Marcel Reed is doing everything they need to. They're, they're not running the balls effectively as they should. Mm-hmm. But I think they'll get that figured out at some point.

Now, this is the surprise spread for me when I looked at the SEC games featuring either an SEC opponent. Or a power four opponent. And this is Vandy minus three and a half against NC State. Give me Vandy. Give me the Commodore's. Give me Clark Lee. I think they hold it down for the team. Jared Curtis making his first career start for the Commodore's, the five star freshmen that got flipped from Georgia. It's his time. It's, it's time. And dude, NC State has been probably one of the bigger disappointments of the early part of the 2026 College football season. They played Virginia, got their tail kicked and their coaches actually said out of their mouth that they didn't think Virginia was going to run as much as they did. Bro, their quarterback is Bro Pribula. Yes. Did you not watch any film? Did you not watch any film? That's what he's here for. They must have only watched Virginia film last year. And they must have thought Bo Pribula was Chandler Morris. Like, that's terrible. That's terrible. Absolutely.

Preparation matters, guys. It is a big, big deal. Yeah, give me Vandy. I just, I like Clark Lee. I think he's a good coach. And I do think they've recruited well and they've portled well and they have a good roster to go with Jared Curtis. This is there, to me, this is their first test of the season. I'm not a big believer in what they've done the first couple of weeks, but get a win here. You'll start turning me into a bit of a believer. All right. Also at minus three and a half. Now this to me is one of the most intriguing games of the weekend, Jay. South Carolina minus three and a half against Mississippi state in Columbia, South Carolina. The fact that Mississippi state has forced the respect of being a pick them in a neutral site. Tells me everything you need to know about this game. Get you're pocket one ready. Bulldogs, man. Give me those fighting Jeff LeBees. Camarillo Taylor is my favorite quarterback in the conference. Yeah. Sign me up. That's going to be an electric game. They got speed, speed, speed. Oh, yeah. He's using the heck out of all the home of transfers.

Yeah. And I feel like he's created a toughness with this team as well. You know, it's not just skill and speed. It's physicality. They're trying to be an SEC team with elite speed at White receiver. So yeah, I think this could be a Mississippi state win. And if it is, do you strap a rocket to Camarillo Taylor in the Heisman race and to Jeff LeBees in just coaching respectability because that would be a big win for them. And then for Shane Beamer. I don't know, man. But it's going to be a great game. Like I said, get your popcorn ready. All right. That brings us to Ole Miss, LSU. LSU is a two and a half point road favorite in Oxford. Sounds about right. People like Lane Kiffin going to his old house. I want Ole Miss to win this game really bad. That's America's pick. I think LSU is going to win this game. I think they're going to cover the sprint.

Yeah. I think it's unfortunately going to be an LSU win. And then we're going to have to hear from Lane Kiffin after the fact. And I'd not look forward to that. All right. Let's bring it to Oklahoma minus 21 and a half against the New Mexico Lobos. If they don't cover this sprint, man, I may just retire. I'm not going to say I'm going to eat dog poop out of a soak up. Oh, but they better cover that dang sprint. No, they better cover that dang sprint. I might bet the hair. Like I did last year when I said Oklahoma would go 10 and 2 before the Tennessee game. And they did. Thanks for having to keep my hair. I'll never bet. We're never betting the dog poop or the butt stuff. That's never going to happen. Ever. Ever has a butt stuff. I don't even want to know. There will be no keep a secret. Keep a secret. I've seen social media stuff. It's stupid. Anyway, Oklahoma needs to make a statement. That's how I started this show off. They need to make a statement in this game. And our buckle, Ben our buckle, the offensive coordinator himself needs to make a statement.

He needs to show he's willing to adjust to the personnel that Jim Nagy has brought in for him, created for him to establish a physical power running football team. Today is an opportunity to send that message. And that's going to do it for today's episode of Lockdown Sooners. Thanks so much for tuning in being a part of the show.
