Well, he was going on happy Friday, Nick Kirby here. Welcome to Chatterbox Reds, your daily home for Cincinnati Reds content, all spring training long. Well, the Reds lost 9-6 to the Dodgers on Thursday night. Reds now back to 500 at 9-9. Let me tell you all about the action on Thursday. Say, tough night for Nick Lidolo. He gave a four runs in the first inning and then six earn runs overall over four innings of work. Lidolo gave up a home run to Max Muncie. Now, the positive Lidolo didn't walk a batter and the velocity looked pretty good. Lidolo hit 95.9 on the gun.
Curveball was definitely the Dull's most effective pitch. She got three whiffs on eight swings against it, but nothing else really got any swing and misses. He only got two whiffs on the other 23 swings. Here's what Nick Lidolo had to say after the game. Nick, what is it like you got a college time? I mean, obviously, number one, building up. Got there before any mark. Felt good, though. Overall, first inning, definitely, you know, with the fastballs over the plate. They got hit, but other than that, you know, felt pretty good. I feel like as you're getting closer to the very end of the camp that you're about where you want to be physically going into the season. Yeah, for sure. It felt strong today all the way through the four. So, you know, definitely getting closer there, you know, and pitches and everything like that. They're coming together. And building strength, something you've been working on even since last year, but this offseason, too. Yeah, for sure. And then, you know, pitching its own is building up as its own thing versus just coming in, you know, stronger and stuff like that. But I think that's
definitely a good foundation to have to, to, when you're building up for sure. How important was it to work with Steve O and, you know, continue to work in that regard? Yeah, always good. You know, I don't, Trevys caught me a lot. So yeah, good to get back there with Steve O for sure. I thought you did a good job. Also, if I can ask you Nick, Tito was talking today about, you know, things that you're doing and have been doing to work on blister issues. What have you done this winter to work in that regard? And have you seen any results from that here? Yeah, I mean, there's been a couple things I'm doing. But overall, it's hard to say right now. You know, I've never had it this early. So I didn't expect to either. You know, it's something I think as the year goes on and you get a lot of wear just on, you know, where I get the spot and everything like that is what we're really going to have to, you know, try to battle on and hopefully it works. Also, I want to ask you real quick about Ellie's play in that first inning and the play of
Sal at First Base, how impressed you've been with his work at First Base? Yeah, Ellie's play been great. First out of the game, out of the gate, testing him and, you know, really good play. Sal has been great over there. I've made a little miscommunication on the cover of Muncie. I know that on the double play, but overall, you know, I think I think Sal has done a good job over there. Well, sadly, TJ Anton is coming back to Earth after a really cool start to spring. Anton gave up a two-run homer to Tioska Hernandez. Anton has now given up five earn runs over his last two appearances. He had not a lot of run over his first three really dominant outings. Rock Burke, the left, he gave up a solo homerun to a minor leagueer. The velocity though looked really good for Burke. He hit 98 miles per hour. Junior Marte, the probably best pitcher of the day for the Reds, he struck out three batters over a scoreless inning of work. He's got some incredible stuff. 99.4 on the gun. He got eight whiffs on 13 swings. All right, now for the offense,
no other Marte, he's starting to heat up. He was two for three. Mamma Claim, just a pesky one for three. His average dropped all the way down to 581. South Stewart, one for three, he had a pair of hard hit balls. Dane Myers, on base twice, he had the hardest hit ball of the day by a Red at 109.5. Tehran for credit, actually gave Myers some pretty big praise after the game. Ellie, the other crew is 0 for three, but he made a really nice defensive play. He kind of had to range to his right, sort of slide, turn around and then fire a bullet to first base, really great play that Ellie made kind of look easy. Tyler Stevenson was 0 for three, did hit a ball, 370 feet, actually would have been a home run in 24 of the 30 big league ball parks. Spencer steer 0 for two, he's hitting a book 79 this spring. Brian Hayes, 0 for two, Reese Hines, 0 for two with a walk. Garrett Hampson still struggling, 0 for two, he's now 1 for 24
this spring, a 0.42 average. Couple prospects, he got out of the game, had some success. Carlos for a, he had a double, that was the only Red's extra base hit of the entire day, I mentioned before, Carlos for a, one of my favorite Red's prospects. I really hope he has a break out season, kind of been waiting for it, fun player to watch, finished the year, date and last year. See, maybe you can get to the chat a new year this year and have some success. Kind of view, he also singled in his only at bat. All right, some Red's news to discuss, Caleb Ferguson is going to start the year on the aisle, Ferguson, a four and a half million dollar signing by the Red's, this off season, Ferguson, officially out within oblique strain. So that probably makes you think that Sam Moles job is safe and Moles looked really good this spring. So that's a good thing. My best guess at this point is you probably have Pagan, Santillon, Ashcraft, Pierce Johnson,
Brock Burke, Sam Moles and Connor Phillips. Then it comes down to Brandon Williamson or Kyle Nicholas, Nicholas, the picture the Red's got from the Pirates hasn't appeared yet because he's been pitching in the World Baseball Classic. The question being is if they want to keep Brandon Williamson stretched out or not as a starter to AAA to kind of protect yourself if someone gets hurt. It is still possible though that Ashcraft and Phillips could get demoted to start the season if they kind of continue to look bad and not throw strike certainly. But I bet if they're just kind of okay, the rest of the spring, they probably have a job on the opening day Ross. But we'll see and they're also as always, sadly, could be more injuries. Other Red's news, Red's are going to open the year with Andrew Abbott, Nicola Dolow and Brady Singer in that order against the Boston Red Sox. Nothing officially announced past that, but you to assume probably Chase Burn to end Red Louder the next two in some order and then Abbott would face the Pirates in the finale. So that's how the Red's pitching will shake out to start the season.

Not to be okay. All right, well, the Red's back added on Friday. Double duty Red's have a two split squad games both on Friday night. The first one Red's taken on the Giants on the road. That's at 705. Now you'll only be able to find radio for this game via the Giants broadcast on the MLB app. In that game against the Giants on the road, it'll be Chase Burns, Chase Petty, Luis May, Hagen Danner and Lyon Richardson. Now the other game is at 905 pm. This will be back in good year.
This will be on 700 WLW. Red's going with Brady Singer, Pierce Johnson, Zach Maxwell, Connor Phillips and Graham Ashcraft. That game is against the Giants too. I don't know if I've seen this a whole lot where you play a split squad, but you're playing the same team in both games. So we'll keep our eyes on that and recap all of that on tomorrow's show. World Baseball Classic, they were off. At least the players were tracking on Thursday. Next time we're going to see A.U.A.W.A. Swarris and Edwin O'Roye will be on Saturday in the qualifiers. Royo and team Puerto Rico take on Italy at 3 pm Saturday on FS1 and then A.U.A. Swarris and Venezuela take on Japan at 9 pm on Fox. That's all we have for today.
