I brought it toward the coyotes and I have to move. It's okay if I join the spit check with podcast full time little bird. Ryan Whitney's got a pink Whitney out there now. I just look to land back or get there on camera. He's the handle the song man. It's a full time member. Marley just got this is from Chris Beat. Whoa, where buzzing right now. Ski. What is up folks? Welcome to episode 672 of Yes Boys that Pinkies Up, spit and chicklets podcast. We're back. Hockey back. We were, yeah, we were wondering what to expect and oh, did we get a couple storylines just two nights into the season boys.
We got two nights of games. We had five games. We had three games eight games total right now. It is Thursday 1115 a.m. Eastern and biz. You own the Philadelphia flyers. I was getting some cookies up. Why? You're getting pink. Yeah. No, if the pinky was a missile or a gun, but I'll tell you this. Shout out, pinky, pinky's up and pink Whitney again. I did not expect to see a clip of Sydney Crosby walking into the brink for you then to talk over and say he's going to shove it up your ass that I filly as you were in Philly. Yeah. What made you you went you went to the dark side quick. Yeah. They were rowdy in that. They were all the whole game even after they lost seven nothing. They were the whole time is barking in our ear. Just to come back people. Just come back people. True. You know what though? They, but the minute you come around and you come down the steps and you meet all of them, they're kind. It's kind of like me. A lot of bar. Not a lot of bite.
It's like you too with Billy G. It was like it was like the Billy G treatment all over again, buddy. Like when I meet babs. You ever seen that little meme video of the two dogs on. And then the gate opens up and then they're just like they look at each other and walk the other way. That's kind of how it was. Yeah. But a fun night in Philly we had Chuck on the broadcast. We had Gary Jonesy pop by less than ideal performers. I think the worst home opener in flyers history. I don't think they shut out the penguins since like the year 2000 or 2001 at home. So pretty dreadful. Oh, it's pathetic. A true. Like they play tonight, I believe in Jersey. So it's almost nice. I think to get back on the horse, but I think talks glasses that might have to get addressed. And in terms of all bark, no bite, would I say this to talk face probably not. Absolutely not. I would never recommend not.
I don't think he's a glasses guy. He never had glasses. You're your less of a glasses guy than him. He never had glasses on last year, correct? Right, but he was talking to Wayne about how the fact that he's hit the age where his like I say to start to go a little bit. And like sometimes like people probably get weirded out by like touching your eyeball and putting contacts in. Wayne Wayne said that he got the surgery where he basically got like implants. LASIC of no, it's not LASIC. I said all LASIC and he's like, no, it's not LASIC. And then he was talking about these implants that he had put in his eyeball. It's like, your Wayne Gretzky will give you somebody else's eyes. Like here you go. And then there's a bunch of Canadians like, I'll give you my actually. Yeah. I will say this. I just think talk would be better off with an eye patch over an eye. Yeah. He's one of those guys where like it doesn't even matter if he can see the game. He's such an intimidating guy on the bench. Like I'd have an assistant coach telling him what's going on in his ear before having him wear those eyes.
The way that they played, I think I would rather go blindfolded on the bench. Yeah. I'm sure he did with Sandra. Yeah, I don't have to watch this anymore if I just tie something over my eyes. Dan Mew's on the other hand, a finals for the Jack Adams last year. That's a glasses guy. Yeah. That's a glasses guy. And that makes sense that they go in there and they kicked a shit out of Philly. It looked like a before and after. Look bad in it. That's talk right there. It looks great. Yeah, he looks phenomenal. It looks great. It's just more of the good luck factor. It just wasn't. Yeah. Finish your before and after. That was what about that was going to be funny. No, I was just saying it looked like like like you used to look like a malnourished talk it. Look on the other bench. It's just like it's like, you know, if it isn't one in 15 games in the lab watching video, like just fucking, you know, haven't had any fucking protein. But, but buddy, did he have the penguins ready to play? And big shout out to the penguins. No brazo, no rust.
Kindle was out of the lineup. I mean, graves. I don't know if he's fits in the top, top six, but very, very impressed by the newcomers, just like I was impressed by the newcomers from last year with Pittsburgh. Like these guys getting the lineup, Nick Robertson, a guy who couldn't even fucking, he had the beg for a first line shift with the Toronto Maple Leafs. He gets put on Crosby's line two goals in the first game. One was a little bit of a lucky bounce off the N. Wall off the D.R. But how about that third line, boys? That third line, Andrew Xlipier. It's got to be one of those things where these kids, like everybody in the league grew up idolizing Sid and like these young kids come in and they get a chance to just even be on the same team as him. And they are going to give it all they have, try to show off not for themselves, but just even like prove to Sid that they belong in the league. And good for them because man, like you can win a job and you're playing, you know, once these other guys come back, like you might get put on waivers and there's 31 other teams that might pick you up. So they're playing for themselves and it's cool to see, especially early in the season when it takes the old
the guys a little bit longer. These young guys can come in and help you out and they did that last night. I'll say with like from personal experience, I'll never forget one of the only, I played 15 regular seasons with the regular season games with the Pittsburgh. With the 15 too many, make a wish fucking ran long out of your holy shit. Did I wait this guy still on the team? I thought this is going to be a one day video shoot while I still here. We haven't been paying. Are we? But we went into Philly and just the way that they would like bark at Sid and all the signs they had, it made for a way more emotional game. I'll never forget I got my first NHL point on a, I think it was a max Talbot or Tyler Kennedy goal. And we were on a line together and I ended up fighting Aaron Asham, but being just being in Sid's presence, knowing that he was dealing all with that verbal barrage, how much going into Philly and beating them in Philly, like it was a way more amplified regular season game than then then most at least in the 15 I play with Pittsburgh.
That one felt like the biggest one and we ended up I think winning two won. So I just like kind of you mentioned, those kids probably had the same feeling like, let's not fuck this up for Sid. And you look at the first goal that they scored. Sid gets blown up by Risto, but they don't over react. They don't have guys come trying in to try to fight. They work hard. They get the puck back and they score a goal and they get their team on the board because that's what Sid would do. Like this guy has, he's teaching people with just the way he, he's the prime example of lead by example. Did I read that I think now he's the longest tenured captain in NHL history in his 21st season? Has him he been a captain longer in his life than he hasn't been a captain in the NHL? Probably with Ramuski. Yeah. No, no, no, like in the NHL he's turning 40 next August. Oh, this is his 28th year is captain. So yeah, she's been an NHL captain longer than he's been alive. Jesus Christ. I'll say, I'll say this. Toronto fans who I believe nice win against the Islanders on Wednesday evening tough loss Tuesday night.
But Nick Robertson is there a chance if like he gets 25 goals? I don't it's weird. He never he said after the game to his like I'm not used to ever getting like minutes like this, right? And I don't think he ever really shot fired. He would always play like 11 minutes. And he was over 15 last night. And it's like that could be a guy that if what his leash was this long and strong. Yeah, it was never with different coaches too. Yeah, it didn't really make sense. I would have liked to have seen him get a little bit more opportunity. I'm pretty sure I set it on pass podcast where it was just the line Shufflin and fucking most cases. In some cases, he was getting sent back down to the miners. So I I kind of also assumed that it was also a ploy to try to lure in Jason Robertson. Yeah. Because I give his brothers having fun and vibe in there. You see the mom and how crazy and love how much she's loving when both of them are playing against each other. Imagine having her in the crowd with bolder them on the same team, which is still very much a possibility if they are fucking up.
And maybe maybe he has a great season there, but really, really cool to see him get the monkey off the back. And you mentioned nobody doing anything. But when he did get hit by Ristalline and Robertson kind of gave him that shove on. And then he scored a Sid goal to an honor. He scored the same. That was pretty cool. That little tip shot. That was like the hack at the park. I love that. It's a tip. It's a lot easier when Sid does it even Robertson than it actually is like that. If I'm trying that move, it's 50 50. It hits my blade of my stick and goes right into my teeth. I'd have not just like that. It's not easy. I tried to have the pirate patch on my face. I don't know if you know him that well. Obviously, you know JVR, but Trevor Van Riem's like very impressed with his first game. Yeah. Some great pinches, great job in the ozone, good, the diesel and stick. Pretty impressive performance boys by the whole Penguin squad. Yeah, they looked awesome. That's exciting for them and Philly, like just to leave the fans with that taste in their mouth.
That's good game one. Oh, you have course they boot them. I mean, and I don't really blame them to be honest with you. Like that's like that is one of the worst efforts I've ever seen. And it's the first night of a new season at home. Luckily, they get to play today or they could have a like a bag skate possible. I don't know. Do you bag skate after the first game of the year? I know. I think you flushed that one down the toilet. I feel like most of the games have still kind of felt like preseason games. Yeah, that's one of the teams on that. That's a topic to bring up. Started with the first game of the season. Cool to see Jordan stall carries out the Stanley Cup, right? Pretty crazy. The entire team's back. Well, I guess Niketian's not there because he wants like 10 million a year. I don't know what that. I think he should get 9 10 million here. I don't understand that. So he turned down eight times six is what I'm hearing. Is that what somebody said? I saw that. I didn't see that around too, but it's I mean, that was reported yesterday. But it's your right. Okay.
Wow. So going full Russian and Carolina. It's exciting. Fans are fans are going nuts. The banner is and then the banner's sitting there crooked. I'm like, Dundin's probably list snapping on someone right now. The banners crooked. Sure they have that fixed. But that game. One of the most boring hockey games that I've ever seen. And in terms of what you're saying, Biz, like the shorter preseason, I think we have to expect some of these games. It's like the NFL now, right? Where a lot of guys don't play in the preseason. It's the first few games. It's like, all right. We're not there yet. Why are you reddit the CBA? They said no fitness testing. Only two games for veterans and you can't work on the power play and training. Can't be there. Well, some teams. Yeah. Some teams didn't get the memo though. Colorado. What was the power? Was it over 13 come out? Yeah, over seven. No for six in the game. One. I thought the gameplay got better in the second third period. But what you saw though was Florida being my gay.
We got our rest and we're going to fucking bring out the anachon. Anachon. Anachon. A chokehold game one of 84 here and show people what we're about. And you got to imagine Mark. He was like, oh, this is what it's like not seeing Oddman rush after Oddman rush and great a after great a he was big when he had to be. But it's going to be a totally different look for him and net not dealing with all the bullshit. Like he does in New Jersey. Yeah. And he just made the those saves that he that he needed to make. He made one. There was a two on one on the five on three. He made a save and then a break away. A short hand of break where he made a great save. But yeah, the first night the power plays were three for 31. And then the second night last night the power plays were seven for 24. So at least they got a little better. Thanks Colorado. Haven't haven't talking to, you know, some of the guys in that carolina Florida game. As a viewer, I didn't love watching it. I just expected maybe a little more like high offense, you know, first game back. Those guys ready to go. But they said it was like a playoff game that it was not a ton of room.
To make any no one wanted to make a mistake. It was just it was basically like a the first game of the season was a playoff game. And you got to expect those two teams know that they're going to be playing each other. At some point they're in the playoffs to get to the finals. It felt like that like Halsey got tripped by cool. A cove. And I don't know if it was a could chuck on the ice or somebody where when when Halsey was on the ice, they just went like like like flick this stick like fuck you. Yeah, yeah. Get off your fucking get off your ass. You know, like it had that vibe to it where they were they were the hate was real. Yeah. And then Dolore a thought a mama. Is that his name? Yeah, go go mama. Boko, a mama of Dolore had just crushed someone too. I don't remember who that was along the wall, but in total 35 shots, 20 for the panthers, 15 for the hurricanes. I'd love to know if there was a game last year where carolina only had 15 shots, but that's Florida, right? They're showing up. They're ready to go. They're even in Marshaun. And then took back a few of the analytics guys rings after only getting 50. He put on like some cousins names on the cup and took off a couple players.
Tracker jack box rings and he gets takes back the real ones. Just unreal. So the banner was crooked. I never noticed that. Well, I think I'd up there all of a sudden it was like sitting crooked. I was like, I don't know if something's going on there, but I'm sure they, you know, that gets fixed. That gets fixed. No, it looked it looked way bigger than the oh six one, too. Is that normal? I kind of think that, yeah, I don't know if that was just like how the angle of it. Is it the exact same as the oh six one? I don't know. It doesn't really matter season over hurricanes. I'll tell you this. I'll tell you this right now, though, being back with hockey, being back, it was more excitement. We talked with murals about how they just spaced out the games. I was like, all right, this is awesome. Not a great game. Boom. We got four more coming. Yeah. We got four more. And then Toronto Montreal. I the excitement in Toronto is different. I did think about it after the show and I was like, wow, this said they replaced Marner. No, I said that they is playmaking ability, not the selkeness, not the pk, basically only
playmaking, playmaking, but not even that now. But Neil and there he starts that thing off with a snipe and I actually thought Toronto came up phenomenal and much are all a little bit on their heels. They ended up getting switched up, but I was like, wow, Toronto looks better. Like Toronto look good and they looked good against the islanders. So it's like a lot more excitement there. I still can't believe Jim Hillers, the coach, I think back to the LA days and I don't know if you saw doubties comments about like how they're going to have so much more active about debying active and we had to just stand on the blue line. Like it was almost like, wow, I kind of forgot Hillers, the coach there, but there's excitement there. He's assistant there to before. So maybe that like Toronto media and knowing the environment, like there weren't many other options available, but I mean, hey, one in one, I thought that they're second most impressive guy other than Neil and or that cow one guys. Oh yeah, I wasn't around, man. He's a little, he's awesome. Oh yeah, you know, you're not very big.
I, we were looking beforehand. He's six foot with three pairs of socks. He looks smaller. You have three pairs of socks on during that. Fitness or fitness test in quote unquote. And he's a buck 80. So but he play, he plays bigger than he is. And he's a winner. One of them cop. I think he was MVP of the mem cup. Want to call the cup last year. He's got three points already. Just he looks like one of those young kids that is just like not, I don't want to say cocky, but like confident in his ability that he just like, hey, you know, I got three points through two games. Like I expect myself to do this. You know, I think he'll be good for a mechanic. A mechanic has been okay the first two games, but that's obviously going to take some time. So I think having a guy like, how and if he can continue to play good, it's only going to help mechanic as well. It also helps a lot. There'd be a lot more discussion and talk about him as a 20 year old or 21. I don't know which 20 if mechanic wasn't there. Like that would be the young stud first round pick.
And it just takes off this like weight a little bit in terms of like everyone looking at the one young stud for the maplies. Well, we have the first overall pick and I can kind of the count's 21 G saying. So still like, it just makes it easier. There's just a little less pressure. Would it would it change his game? I have no idea, but did it change for you? I mean, you were fifth overall in a lot of expectations. Yeah, but I know there you are. But I was, I mean, I was like seventh on that team in terms of like excitement and expectations. It's like those cross stall, malkin. Like it was hurt. I was put it this way on the next generation poster. I was blurred out. I was like the last guy with like a blurry face. But we kind of skipped. I skipped. Excuse me. The lead in the maplies and that was the breaking news right after we recorded of March. We talked about it when we were on, right? Because it was a possibility and we were trying to guess as to who was going back the other way. And so we've got rumblings that began. So we said, I've said for a long time, why did they want to trade knives so bad? He's been in the mix of all these rumors.
He was traded in March. It was too late. And it ends up being knives. And Marchenko goes back to Ronald sent knives, Stephen Lawrence, defenseman, Emil Andre, and a second round picked a Columbus for Marchenko, Miles Wood and goalie Elvis, Merced Leakins. So I do think and I think I saw hazy on TSN say there has to be some formula or stat that the maplies are looking at that says like, knives is not as good as people think. And that may sound kind of like bad. It doesn't. It's more like if they are all about trading this guy and they're shopping around constantly, there was something there after signing him that they just didn't necessarily buy into. There's two GM's to like it wasn't just a tricot trying to move off one that was three two, right? Yeah. Yeah. Exactly. That was tree who had the deal done, right? And then it got it was too late with Montreal and then all of a sudden, Chica comes in and
he ends up doing it before the season. He is a fucking unit and sometimes like I've talked about it before. Like I don't know what type of background he came from as far as like weightlifting and powerlifting because some of these college programs where you go or maybe where he grew up there, they really emphasized that where I believe that the body, especially when you're a big figure like that tends to break down sooner rather than later. So maybe that's the case. Were you interested in seeing the speed burst stat and how much faster Marchenko is when reaching top speeds and how Marchenko is not only skill probably has a better shot, but he's like in the 99th percentile of I believe that. I would. And he takes it to the hoop. Like he's already done it a couple times in the two games that he's played. He's not afraid to take a guy wide and bring it to the net and and knives is that type of player too. But yeah, I didn't realize how fast Marchenko was with the puck. Like he is flying when he has the puck on his stick. Yeah, he had a noticeable moment in the Montreal game where he got it like down the wall and just went by somebody like.
And I was like, Oh, and the fact is that the numbers he was putting up with players much. Exactly. Not nearly as good as the players he was playing with in Toronto. And then knowing like now he's going to be playing with Matthews and Tavares and Neil and her like I get it. Obviously right now he is he is a much better player. But I hope nice does well. I mean, it's like I heard the phone call that Don Woodell gave him and he and he was just he kind of sounded a little shocked. He's like, yeah, the night before the year. There was also the video when they won the draft lottery. I think he was at a Marley's game with Neil and her and you could tell how excited he was. And I think it's difficult going from a place like Toronto to Columbus. It's no shot. I mean, I think the fans in Columbus are better than the fans in Toronto, but the whole like hockey being everything and all of a sudden it not being like the you're not in the biggest hockey market, right? It's just it's hard to deal with. And he's probably just like figuring that out as he goes. It's surprising. He's got to get there. He's got a game.
Is that Yoshi Barkin frog outside my house of frog? Yeah. It's raining. So the frogs come out. I swear to God. Get out of here. I swear on my children. What kind of frogs they got down the dog? Like a gator frog. I didn't hear it. They're. Oh, I hear that thing. I hear it. I thought it was Yoshi Barkin at wit because of the stunk. I should just barkin at him. People send back to vinegar. Yeah, like boiling vinegar. She called Pet Smart. She ended up just rubbing yogurt all over him. And I was like, oh, I came home and it was just yogurt all over him. Like she did like it had to sit in his hair and his fur for hours. And I just came out. He looked up at me. He just yogurt everywhere. He'd obviously licked it up off the fur around his thing. But he smells phenomenal. Now the house is back. The windows have been open for three days. Nice. Yeah. I'm back boys. I'm back in business. No more skunk in this bill.
The flyers got skunk. They're the skunks now. Going back to nice. Going back to nice. Yeah. The trade, like, you know how it is in the off season and then right before train and camp, you're so excited to get the season going. You have the captain's practices. Then camp gets going. And you're like, all right, I'm loving our team. I'm loving what we got going on right now. And then boom, it's taken from you and you're traded to a different. Like that's got to be one of the toughest days to get traded. Because, you know, if you get traded at trade deadline, you know what could be coming. Anyone could get traded. But the day before the season opened, or like, that's got to be tough. That actually might be the worst time to get traded unless you're looking to see you're on your wedding day, major install. Yeah. And then all of your teammates are at the wedding. Yeah, that's a great idea. The model there. Yeah. But March, take on the other hand, it's like, yes, this is unbelievable. And it comes with an extension of six year deal at 12 and a half a year.
He's like, this is awesome. There was a picture sent with him and his agent on a private jet to Toronto. And it's like, it was the smallest private jet I've ever seen. Did you see that picture there? Like, I'm like, what is that? Is that all those gliders that didn't even have an engine? The red bowl. Last thing on Toronto the first night, Bob with rookie laps. Oh, I love this. I love this. Flying fuck. Yeah. I think the boys were like, all right, Gavicle crushed this rookie lap. He got his family there. I think he had friends in town, his mom and dad on the glass, great picture and Bob's like, niat, niat, not happening. Nia. He's like fancy your number, bitch. And there were some people like, all those bullshit bad teammates. And he think he gives a fuck. I do the same thing every single and I think not teammates. I meant fans. Oh, Keith, you said Bob's a, a, a sickle on game days. Oh, yeah, just complete it from the morning from the minute he gets there in the morning
till game time. He's not one of those guys like, you can't go up and talk to him or say anything, but he is just everything he does has a reason has a, you know, if it's 405, he's at the same spot every time a 405 during the thing. So I mean, I'm not a huge fan of the rookie lap anyways, more so because I would have hated to do it. Like it would have been so embarrassing. Like it just doing that. I think it's, it's cool when guys do it, but I can't imagine the kind of cares. Like Bob went on the ice and went right over to the right and like, yeah, at the end of the day, it's just, I don't think it was a thing when I was over. It wasn't. No, I would, I would love that I would really high step in. Oh, dude, are you kidding me? You're out first game in the NHL. You're just flying around. It's still dark out music's pumping. I would have. I would have taken a digger into the boards like when I took out Florian Columbus, possibly, but I would have just started stretching my going, drawing at center. I would have done like I would have been, I would have been nervous, like stepping on a puck or something. Start shouting the box and in the glass. They're like, ah, is that me?
That's a mate for Kenneth. But like, so people in Toronto, like obviously the initial response was that people were very upset. I think that Matthew Nies was essentially like the golden retriever, like the guy who took the hometown discount, like he'll get you 30 goals, he'll fight, he'll hit. He's heavy on the forward check. I feel like that power forward, they've been waiting a long time to get. And then all of a sudden you get them at a hometown discount and then you just like, give them up and you keep like, basically shopping them around like you don't want him. I think that there was a bit of confusion from the fan base. I keep in mind, Marchenko only makes like just under four million this year. So you're getting an absolute steal at a higher end talent than what Matthew Nies is. I think we can agree that the ceiling from Marchenko is higher than it is for Nies. And it's already there, right? Maybe Nies somehow finds another gear in Columbus with some peace and quiet over there. But I think that you could agree that even when that deal kicks in, if you can get that
higher end talent in a guy who's maybe even on tap even more potential playing on a top line with Matthews and whoever else they got him playing with, I think it's worth the extra five million. To get a 40 goal guy and a guy who can drive as much of his own traffic as you've seen with Marchenko, I think that that now after the dust settles, I think that leaves fans will eventually be happy about this. I did not. I saw more leaves fans were fired up. OK, I would say then based on what I saw that it's probably a fan base divided. OK. Fan base divided. Fair enough. Fair enough. OK. What did you see, Yanzer? Did you not really? No. I thought the same as with fan base, fan base divided just because Nies has been there, you know, a heart and soul guy that I'm sure people loved him around the city and stuff like that. Just the way he played and, you know, all you see of him being a good person outside of outside of the rank.
But even just the I test the first two games, like I think Marchenko, like if you're not happy with him, I think you're crazy. And I mean, there are one year difference in age. I think Marchenko is a year older than him. So it's not like you got like this 30 year old and getting rid of a 24 year old. So I think it's a win, win for both. I think Nies is going to do great in Columbus. I think, you know, a little less pressure coming from media and all that stuff. He can kind of just go focus on his game and, you know, bones got some. Yeah. A bad game and bones got some, but he's not that tight. Like your back hurts. He doesn't dog it every, you know? He's got Lance. Well, now your legs are going to hurt because you just pulled your duty. Um, yeah, also I think I think another aspect of it that Toronto fans probably loved is that Montreal wanted this guy bad. And then you get a little bit of that. That's much. Montreal had been all over Marchenko and there'd been all these different rumors and then Toronto swoops in grabs and it's like, you're not only getting an elite player. You're also beating out the Habs for him.
So yeah, I'm issued to see how nice does. I'm issued to see how Columbus does. Jesus, are they under a lot of pressure to start this thing off well? But another game and speaking of Merr, we talked about Merr and Elio and Chase and Goals. Yeah, I mean, they started off with Boston, New York, Chase. Oh, fuck. That day was zero zero zero zero through about 54 minutes of gameplay. And I texted Merr, well, this is, this is, you might get one win in these nine games. You guys are doing ends up three nothing but holy shit, Paturka, that goal. And I felt bad for Schneider and Schneider who I kind of always liked as a player like Rangers fans. He is like public and he's been there whipping boy and that was, that was an all time dancing. That was an all time like don't watch the puck and Paturka brought that thing out and
just brought it in and what a goal. And I think for Bruins fans to trade for him and then see that return on the first night. Like that's exciting. That's, that's a big time goal. They didn't have like Paschinox, the only other guy in that team I could see scoring that goal. They added a guy like that. Well, not gonna say like pasta. I don't see. He's not like dancing. Yeah, he's a shooter. He's a shooter. Even Datsuke, um, Frazier, Datsuke, what a rocket. Like is that considered a weak goal by Shesterkin? I don't think it's just that he's he's far of deception. But what a word. Also information and just a rocket to get that thing going and then cast the lick. Berries it to make it three nothing to the Rangers look pathetic. Oh, another shutout. Another shutout. They didn't do it at home. Yeah. Yeah. But they will tonight. So you know what this chasing goals reminds me of? It's, uh, you know when you go to the casino and you play, you let that, you know what you go to the
casino and you play roulette and then like you got a, a body who's like, we got, we, we got a surround 17 or 20 and like you put chips all around that, that those numbers, like on the side and like you kind of cover that whole area and then zero or double zero. You're going to a chasing goals game. You have to sprinkle a little bit money on no goals in the first and then no goals in the second. You just have to just enough to cover the big bet. Yeah. Just don't go to a Rangers game. Or that or the heads of Merle. I've changed it. Five minutes into the game. He had enough. He bet zero zero. Five minutes into the game. I can't take this. These two teams zero zero. Finish. Yeah. He bet. So this is the first night of chasing goals. They have nine trips across North America and five minutes in. Merbeth the game would be zero zero. They go into the goal. The goal is series two best goalies in the NHL game. One, that's a crazy decision. Can you wait till the back of the back up seren or something? Can you bet for the period?
You can. Yeah. You can do under like I told you, I think it's one and a half goals per period. You can like take the over the under. I think but that's the play. Not the full game. It's the people go by period. That's why I said that. I said that by step, baby. The play is to whenever you see those two with boots on the ground in a drink, you found the under and you call your financial advisor. If you have one and you say, unload the clip of everything I have on the under murals is there chasing goals. Also, I, I, I, Rear was there. I can't forget that. Well, we'll talk to Rear. What's he going on? Oh, yeah, it's right. It's Thursday episode. We're with that. He disappeared for a bit. He disappeared for a bit. I'll address that in a little bit when we get to our race world boys. Let the Rear speak guys. Jesus Christ. He looked phenomenal too. What was I just going to, I had totally forgot that McAvoy baseball bat two handed Benson and got the six games suspension. Now I thought back I'm like six games, dude.
That's like, I still in prison. It's 12 and play. No, but they'd already been eliminated, right? And that's why it was six. It wouldn't have been six had they had they still been in the playoffs because they usually say it's double, right? So they're bringing them out game seven with the same patty wagon that Jan showed up to trickle's cup and oh, really? Yeah, Hannah Baleck through mask every big pipe. Yep. Yeah, but let, let McAvoy rest G saying right here, but I kind of forgot about that. So a good win for the Bruins. Swaman. Man, that guy he looked, he looked comfortable. He, and now granted it's the Rangers. It's the Rangers, but he looked just so at ease and the creases. Angles are so good. It starts a season off with the shadow, just a dream scenario for him to get it going. So the Bruins, they do their thing, pasta look great with the sea on those are the games that coaches love to, right? Like zero, zero, and then you find a way to score some goals at the end. Like nothing makes a coach more rocked up than a, yeah, nothing, nothing stingy defensive
game and find a way to get a couple at the end. Like, I'm sure, I'm sure Stern was fired up for that win. Oh, no doubt, no doubt. So the other, the other game that, that really kind of saved the first two nights, I would say is, is business second game on TNT, Colorado LA. And I think we're bearing the lead here. What? I think we're not fucking gold. We're not going past Edmonton Vancouver for one more fucking game here. We're going right to Vancouver, Edmonton, you fucking, I can admit, day one, I can admit when, when, when you get caught trying to sneak something by your buddies, you got to admit it. And I was trying to sneak by that, you went from, you went from Tuesday to Wednesday. Yeah, I was trying to sneak, sneak by that game. Boys, if you, I, I'm talking to die hard, oilers fans all across the world. If you can't laugh here in it, yeah, if you just can't laugh, you got no soul.
Because let me tell you something, you could bring in Babcock, you could get Kwenville to leave Anaheim and come over. You could dig up to Blake and get him, is he alive still and get him behind the bass? I hope, I hope so. For your sake, it doesn't matter. You're just, this is because crack hockey and Edmonton will be crack hockey and Edmonton forever and ever. For Mike Babcock to go in there and after the first game of the season, say that was ridiculous. I thought, I thought we'd get that was ridiculous in like game 10. It took us one game, one, one Tristan, Jari game. And I'll say, she's saying that, that, that, that, that, what, what was his name? Lysel stinks. Jari might stink. So, should I say that? No, he's in the NHL. He might stink. How did Levi not start? I, now maybe it's like Babcock's coming in.
It's a new season. We're going to give Jari a chance. We traded a bunch for the guy. He signed to this deal. He gets up the puck. I probably wanted to give him the easier game. You're playing Vancouver. He had a goal you struggled. They have been Vancouver tonight as well. I know. Yeah. I think, I think, I think if your Babs you go right back to them. Just fucking, let's get the party started here. Let's get the party started. Do you think Babs, like when it's five, two, is like, what did I get myself into here? Like this is, and it's like every fan's like, no, no, it's okay. This is us. This is the oilers. This is crack hockey. Just incredible. Like, I'll tie the lecha-mocky goal. It was on the ice five, Paul. If you're scoring on the ice five, Paul, no screen. It's like, I think it's an auto pull. It should be like, if you play NHL 27, the game makes it auto pull the goal. It was five full on the ice, no screen. Now I want to give Paul Carter a showdown.
That guy, he's always, he's always shot that new jersey. Let him go. Wasn't he with new jersey and then originally maybe with Vegas and then he started Vegas. Yeah. I think I liked him in Jersey. First thing I looked at though, I was like, what is he making? Like two, six and he's a UFA like, that, he will be one of the top deadline acquisitions. Yeah. They'll be the keeper. Keep her, keep her shirt would have last year. Oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, let me get my lotion out. Hold on. Oh, that's business guy. Yeah. The oilers. Now ice, I keep it right where you put Vancouver on the No Watch list prior to this game. But no, it's in everyone's on the watch. If you're playing Edminton because the craziest shit happens. OK. So now now here's here's what I want to take away from that game Evan Bouchard That is how you just announced like I'm going to win an or underpaid here I'm going to and and by the way, yeah, I've seen a lot of people. I had a great DM from a guy a wild fan by the way
Now I don't know how this kind of like Goes back to the wild he basically was saying when Quinn used ends up getting $20 million dollars Wouldn't you rather have Evan Bouchard at 10 and a half? Ed with a shard buddy that guy this guy hat trick to assist in the first game of the year Some of the goals kind of he also could have had a beautiful assist to dry side to get him a little sauce pass He did a crossby tip that I think hit the crossbar Yeah, that's the oilers boys can babs fix them. I have no I don't know if anyone can as I said It's just what they do they fly around they turn over pucks Their goalie can't stop the puck and it's just Rinse and repeat rinse and repeat at least they can still come back Oh, that's the other thing they always come back if they're down to with with 10 minutes to go it's an auto bet It's an auto auto live bet. It's a double auto. You're just ham They're gonna tie it up and then chances are they lose an OT to another beautiful car goal
I mean his first goal was a snipy lead He looked like a 40 goal score coming down the wing. I think that was shorthanded after a sick save by Lankan and so I don't know dry side those pass over to pod calls and when they tied it was ridiculous Just a no look cross size pod calls and awesome, but those are the passes that babcock's taught like you can make those passes When you're down you're chasing the game a little bit But if you're doing that in the first period and it gets turned over like those are the things that babcock is gonna have to get out of the game I love that pass more than anybody in the world, but at sometimes it's gonna get picked off and it's gonna go the other way No, no, no, I think he's talking about like turnovers at the blue lines and actually Mick David had a turnover at the blue line that led to a Curl off got stuck on the boards. I also saw Wayne Wayne Gretzky say he never sees David leaving Edmonton so for all you two idiots I'm staring at Did get I got Wang can't really see much
Yeah, he didn't want to be on the messie a no flies on it was tonight will will win like three nothing or it'll be an eight seven game And we don't know now Levi could be our could be our savior. Oh, they're going jerry. Just talk to stop they go with jerry tonight man Then that's how you know bab loves the madness. He might just love the madness. I don't know business Of all the church um you want to church and go ahead no and not buddy It's not chirp him. It's just like the way the first game went and the presser went like you couldn't have scripted any better It saved the first night of hockey Like that was the that was the game that was the marquee moment the there was a lot of memes going around There's a lot of AI videos. I mean memes our memes is responsible for a few of them but seeing Louis Erickson on the boards but with babs's face super imposed were Louis Erickson is I don't know if you guys saw this one That's the one that got me the most have you seen it? No Louis Erickson Because he when he was playing with the connox and he was on the boards like the shoveled and then it's got babs as the shoveled face
And it just like it was it was too good a Vancouver connox fan posted it so I mean if you like you said Wait if you can't laugh at yourself then you're you're disillusioned yeah you're a loser because I was Vancouver had five high danger chances in that game six goals boys boys I How many times do I have to tell you it's mcdavids 12th year They've never had a goalie now this year is different just shit luck They get a Stanley Cup champ in Freddie Anderson. He gets hurt and then babgaw comes on He's out till December. I'm like what and then I think so boys out two months. It's just it's always hockey boys mcdavids got to get on the PJ fly to Vancouver Winnipeg And get on his hands and knees and beg Conor hella buck to leave Anderson they can't get hella buck now I don't know I put this way boys. I can't wait to watch the next one But no just the fact that we got a that was ridiculous after the first of 84
Is that that's chef's kiss. Let me ask you this. Who do you think will be the whipping boy in Edmonton outside of goal tending? Look look at that fucking photo. Tell me you didn't you wouldn't see that in laugh That is that's fucking comedy buddy That if you remember the original yes, Louie here This is like after the Dallas days and he ends up in Vancouver and he's got to end his fucking career there and he has at the That is that's 10 to 10 right there So go va you know what in a year that's probably gonna be hell for Vancouver connox fans That might have been their super ball game one so the round of applause Vancouver connox right there You Patterson scores which by the way, yeah, it was it was a great I think it was was a heronic who gave him the shot pass for the tip But the pass that Patterson made right before it was sick. It was coming to him Behind his back almost tipped it with the toe of his blade back to him and then got a little given go First the road power play goal since 25
I thought it was even longer. I thought I remember seeing that during the game Yeah, first road power play goal and so long and every time that bush puts up a three point or more night I'm just gonna remind everyone probably my worst Take of all time saying that they overpaid him I just got a he's I got a heat that one and I'm bush is unreal He's so I'm so sick with the puck And his skating is underrated his edge works incredible I don't know you get so much like speed without bending his knees. It's remarkable His edges and I'll say bring up his pizzas all the time I don't care. You're seeing me in the street. Say how about that bush pizza last night I when you have the puck that much and you're that creative You're gonna throw pizzas once in a while But then you're gonna get five points in the season opener and just piece that that's like the first That's the perfect game to start your run to the norstrophy this year. So um in terms of babs is whipping boy on D
I have mucca madoulin didn't look great That could be a guy who ends up catching some eat and these young who knows Um, I thought Ryan Shay looked really good. Oh, so I'm fine. We're fine. It was the connox They have a wagon this year. What do you do with 37 shots on goal? Give up five high danger chances. They all went in um Test one. I'd like to I'd like to go to Colorado. Oh, where the dog came out like like a like a true sicko You think they heard the power play comments in the off season. Yeah Yeah, they had to they they had to I also saw that that macaar had two points He has two points in the season opener five years in a row now The When I tell you as an as a as a former player to get a point the first game of the year It's just like it is the biggest Weight off your chest. It's like I imagine. I got it. Yeah, bids I'm taught for you. It's like you get your first shift in the season game 14 I got a chef Yes, to have the first perfect mix for the for the playlist before the game. Yes
I did it this year boys, but macaar is just a joke, but makenon it was the first period He was flying around cutting in like I guess we're so accustomed to seeing it But when you don't see it for so long all summer you're like whoa, that's the dog That's the dog he was barking. I actually there were moments where I thought LA looked pretty good um yeah But The good guys right it's the McKinnon show so brant Clark who I didn't really know Uh He kind of gets under people's skin. I guess there was moments last year in the playoff series They were they were they were furious at him and the dog just took He decided to take it all into his own hands and he dropped Clark had no desire by the way to have that fight I don't think first the dog to hand in them and then he's shaking his gloves I'm in and Clark's kind of waving his stick at his stick and then the dog dropped the gloves He's like Muhammad Muhammad all dog there fucking just bobbing weave and on the way when he was bobbing and weave and I was losing it there
He looked like a ninth like a 1870s boxer like You're gonna get it and he came in there. He was really Because that all I mean you said stuff happened last year But he's the one who took out macaar behind the net right which was it wasn't like a malicious player No, it was like it wasn't anything Nate had that look in his eye from the beginning of the game where you know Sometimes during the season where if he doesn't get a pointer the team struggling that next game He's got that snarle like he had that game one like the guys in L.A. Must have been like oh shit This guy's ready to bark. Oh no, I mean Biss interview to master he interviewed him after He had two goals Dominated the game had a fight and he he looked like they just lost I'm a business trying to get a smile out of him. I saw teeth you did yeah, I think we got some teeth Yeah, and then and then he's like Why tie what is it? No, I tie like in blood sport remember when they used to put the glass They they used to wrap their their hands and their their memories Everyone they walked in and the guy was practicing by kicking the the piece of metal
The metal on that was holding up the Whatever the ceiling that's what like a remind me of like how how ready he was to go into that game and that fight He said that he said that brant Clark said a word That he didn't like can we guess the word? Yeah, I'm gonna assume that all the world all the Diet Pepsi Fuck with cigarette I think he said pussy you think you called him a pussy. I called him a pussy And yeah, I mean most words that like you might think of in terms of really pissing the guy off probably we probably can't say No, I think he called him a pussy and that's where yeah pussy and then fucking shimmy shark them and dropped them I said it in the great it looked like an older brother Finally got the permission from his parents to beat up his younger brother And he was just like, oh now you're gonna fucking get it buddy and he like good for brant Clark for showing up Absolutely, but like
Because you can't say no to him right if Nathan Nathan McKinnon like you have to fight him He's not an awesome guy you want him off the ice. I'll say this about about Clark I've always kind of liked watching very skilled moves around well like He seems like one of the I need I want to hang out with all of that He was on with the powers boys on the empty netters And this clip just popped up on my algorithm cheat. Do you have the clip that this kids laugh guy This guy comes to taps up my brother on the shoulder. He's like like hey like I know it's his party, but like he's got a Haha I love this guy I love him What a guy I got kicked out of my own trap party and then I brought up Nate was the most dog and then All right and And you guys in you in your tear down of the central division in your carving of many Dallas and Colorado
Just giving it to Brock Nelson old yellow ink going down yet boys Brock Nelson a beauty by the way that pass over to him Who sent that short boy shorts shortsy a little dog was that pickup was that too Nelson I think it was too they showed the like the camera hole angle from the corner and it was like a high saucer I mean, yeah, it looked like it. He had two primaries like absolute dog in front of the net on the one goal that Who got it was it? Was it Nick wow got the goal maybe or maybe he was like he was just like he was just fighting away battling in front in the blue paint He's a little honey badger. That's a great pickup and I'll tell you that the EBS line their early bird special line second line They were fucking buzzer around me. It's cool army army said they showed fucking They so Nelson the bench pack in his musket
Like and ready to stipe another one Just old school baby Parker Kelly he asked that Parker Kelly he flies around And I thought him looking off McCarr like you better score on that two on one if you're looking McCarr off you have to score I forced so now did I get a lot of two on ones? No, but I'm talking like growing like I forced passes to good play. Oh, I would wear a POP That's what I were done you would have gone miss the net start the other teams break oh two on one against Minus back to the bench, but at least you got a chef so you're right buzzing your season's buzzing Panelson that game Two shorties L.A. Yeah, that's true Trevor more with a nice shortie Leckin and gets two goals. I mean yeah, you guys call it out. I was a wagon. Yeah, they're a wagon absolute wagon. Oh Tough news talking about the central man We had Billy G on I said and I knew favor head, you know something was going on. He'd miss practice
It will be ready to go and if you guys had it ripped his team to shreds he might have broke the news with us big guy had to have surgery He got a fractured skull crazy scary and what's nuts is the clip came out It wasn't even a slap shot it was in just hit him in the pit him in the head He goes down gets his alter shovel actually finished the period I believe in the exhibition game And then that news breaks with no timetable for his return an absolute kick in the dick for wild fans And pretty scary dude you're getting surgery on a fractured skull like I don't know when he'll be back But that was shocking to hear because Billy G I think when I asked him. He's like, yeah, we'll address that tomorrow Like these prex I would have told them the news now, but they fuck it say my team. I feel even worse now about Being down at the central and especially many saying they're gonna miss playoffs fuck. I feel like an asshole Is there any like I know Billy G He said all the right things like it doesn't matter about when he's gonna come back I'm just worried about the human that's just because the type of guy Billy is but is has anyone ever came back
Is there any idea what the timetable for this is like if you told me like a man truck or seven months? I wouldn't know my guess would be two two three months. I don't know. I but but boys That's a guy guessing who had a skunk a skunk dog running around his house who you know, I haven't graduated college yet Like I thought I thought McDonough had suffered something like No, zooped did He got hit in the head he got hit in the head with a pocket I think it was during playoffs and he knows like three languages. He couldn't speak any of them It was it was the most it was the scariest thing I've ever been a part of it was awful and But I don't I don't know if he like fractured his skull and had to get like a surgery But how about Brock Faber trying it wasn't army saying that he tried to come back in the game in the third he played He played he said well. He finished the second. Yeah, I know I don't know if he had tried coming back in what a savage The other the other thing we kind of forgot from opening night was um
Vegas looked really good Chicago did not look good, but no that goal by Kane was dirty Dirt Patrick Kane back in the hawks uniform Just like weights out the goalie awesome goal there, but I could have three points They look phenomenal all of sin who believe in blotments calling goal of sin very original there We got he's got a new guy a yeah, he's got a new guy. It's score of vf now. He's got goal of sin He had a nice one Vegas looked good though 37 shots and and made easy work of the black hawks So after that boys there's there's nothing else stick out. Yeah, I mean nice You know, we often sometimes get texts from Gary Lawless And he has been raving about this Trevor Connolly kid He's saying he's gonna be a superstar. Why are you smirking like that? I'm smirking because I've heard about this kid for a long time and that he's disgusting And he lit he lit up the AHL last year. He was awesome
He I think played did he play called chalky for one year play Providence but Gary sent him me like 3 a.m. Text. I know I got like he's fucking Drake and I'm a side piece or something Tell me about Trevor Connolly in this kid I followed him on Instagram. That's how fucking Gary's got me on the I'm trying to Hey, he said at the end. She was a man Gary said I need to talk to you, man But as he was 19 years old last year 19 turn in 20 and at over a point per game in the AHL 49 points at 46 games That's usually a pretty good sign that you have a when you have a young kid who's producing like that at the AHL It often translates. Yeah, and now he's getting the chance and what's crazy He was actually drafted by them. He's like they have one guy who they like trapped where do you think he's getting traded? He's gonna be gone in a week He must be good if they haven't traded them Yeah, I know hidden gem Yeah, that he scored a nice one and Gary got yeah, I got the late night booty booty call text from Gary about his new favorite prospect on the on the golden nights
So watch out for Trevor Connolly. I guess for all those fantasy people out there. It could be a sleeper for you Yeah, we're doing fantasy talk now and by that big of a loser. We did get another mush text stuff from murals thinking that Easy point coming for TJ Hughes with Colorado because you have first unit power play tough first game No points dash three and an eight four win. That's not good That's not good. No, that's when you're sitting around after yeah great win boys Then you're just like in your head. You're like how was I just dash three? Oh, although nowadays you just tell yourself nobody cares about plus minus That's what you have to tell yourself that yeah all these analytic as posh Plus minus doesn't mean anything anymore You see conley's a hockey DB photo. It's amazing. No, we pull it up. Oh, that is hardcore Get the muzzies get the cuts in the black guy in the stitches. Yeah, the V for vendetta stash going Um, would you say this is the biggest game for the devils in the posh podcast era
You have to get the season started right now. Yeah, yeah, you do the flyers just go work through that doesn't help the devils are coming in angry talks going glasses off They're busing their 10 30 today. They're best busing same day of the game. They got the bus legs But that's really it's then go for a walk and it happened um, I do think I forgot to mention this. I think that jack Hughes is gonna be top three in the heart trophy at the end of the year I think we are about about ready to watch an explosion from him Um, and just domination. I think that I think I think it's a good team and I think they're a good club And I think he's gonna reach another level the poor rangers. They're going home to play Tampa So they're going home to see kutura walking in Braden point who I don't think we mentioned apparently stayed around all summer and was on the ice with kutura all summer So after runoff year last year watch out for Braden point this season. That's a big one um does the ranger score at home tonight, miss
I'm giving them one they have a they have a tough little start to the year They're playing it a back-to-back so then they go to Detroit on Friday And then I think they play Sunday at home So they're playing four games in the first six days of the season. Do they score against Tampa? Yes, but I think they lose five two Got home in the home opener Some may say the game of the night now people be listening to tomorrow. Maybe it's up tonight the game of the night Is Florida at San Jose But I I say no no no no hold your horses We got Seattle at Calgary. Oh, we got Seattle at Calgary That's a radio game keep that on the radio Yeah, seven seven p.m. Calgary time the crack in our town boys Um actually I would uh that all your time both Thursday slate if I'm looking at are looking ahead to Friday. Oh, yeah I want to see capitals hurricanes. I'm really interested to see what the capitals can do there
They're my top three teams in the east right now Um, I don't know maybe I'm getting some false information and then uh the other one too blues at stars Let's see what these pesky blues can do in Dallas. Yeah, you're high on them this year Oh, that's do are you working Friday night? I'm working fire. I'm actually doing the the Detroit Game their home opener against the dirt uh New York Rangers and then the second game is St. Louis at Dallas So I'm excited. We got to like fuck dude like let's like kind of like Vancouver like Detroit with all this noise and all these people chirping at them like they they should come in with a fuck you know Us against the world mentality and I mean a very winnable game against New York to get things going Well the Wings fans man seeing Edvinson skating back in Sweden like They're down in the dumps right now. So they they need to see what I I have no idea what's going on there. I don't know. I think they want like they want to do a bridge deal I don't know. I've read all these different things aren't bridge deals done
I don't know I ask more Trent. I just figured now you get you get You get seven times nine if you if you can skate so right. I don't know. I don't know. What's going on there But the clip came out of him skating back in Sweden and Wings fans just muttering to themselves Just muttering away like what has happened larkens injured We'll see um now Biz what do we have here for uh Bruins at jets Friday and the ducks at the golden nights. That should be it. That should be a good one right there um Shabbat was named captain for the Ottawa Senators. So they saw March on some march on's uh common on the rumors of stuzel And they said no no Thomas Shabbat will be our guy pretty good video. So started a podcast too With who? Marie Cider No shit. Oh, yeah, Jeremy pod Wow Everybody's in a pod now they can just carve everyone He's coached the podcast pretty soon with all these players certain pods. You know that right. Oh, yeah
Uh, but it was cool because I think his wife and his new baby came in and announced to the team He's probably the longest tenured Ottawa Senator, right for sure. Yeah, it's been there since 16 Lot of new captains in the league this year Bednar got an extension boys four-year extension. They announced that makes makes yeah Well deserved how come they never say how much the coaches make. I don't know That's a good question. I don't have to Five I was just say four and a half five Yeah deserves it with what they they What did babs crank four times six? I don't know. I don't know what the clock got but Opening night that was ridiculous. That's something I'll never forget that that's an all-timer Open a night lose six five to the Vancouver Kanox with the work vest With the work the work vest was one of the all-time coolest giveaways to fan of the easy Someone wrote me this is very very mean like oh, this is how they they're keeping you alive in the in the lore of the Edmonton
Others they're giving out a orange vest that resembled you as a pylon when you played here I said thanks a lot buddy. It's not very nice, but very funny trying to get off the year on a good start here. That was ridiculous um Before we send uh Mike Keenan or Keenan excuse me not the coach not the former coach Mike Keenan I apologize. We'd be very fitting if it was him though after we just talked about babs. No um We got to talk about this this story At Arizona State. Oh, yeah, and we haven't chatted about it in a while. Yeah, so just uh heartbreak and news. Matthew Mayuch Who came over this year to Arizona State He They were they were doing a workout now. This is just ridiculous to me. They were doing a workout with I believe a former Green berets a sergeant um It was probably a hundred degrees outside. I'm guessing right and
He ends up having heatstroke right apparently from everything I've heard the the protocols were not followed where you have to get Immediately into a cold tub get inside and he's laying there For what the players said was was was a long time I did not understand how the head coach uh Greg powers had not been Put on leave like right after this happened. It was like whoa. What's going on like the coaches in charge of hiring this this Form a marine or green beret to do this workout which seems so unnecessary makes no sense to me I think something similar had happened at with Tufts lacrosse a few years ago where a kid passed away This heartbreak you're trying to get ready for the season. You're doing this. What is the point of that? I don't I don't get it at all and I was wondering what's going on here like how is this guy still the coach and I guess seven players wrote a letter Anonymously Basically saying like this is ridiculous like this guy cannot be behind the bench right now So he's been put on administrative leave Does does does that help the family at all? No, but I think it makes sense to everyone who's reading this story
Like this guy can't keep coaching this team and it's so so sad you saw the Toronto Maple leaves went out to Scottsdale before their season They made some t-shirts and hats. I believe they visited the mayuch family and it just pisses me off Like it's so unnecessary to do that and then to find out in the letter written by the players That the coach had said to the team after first off they were skating the next day and he said after we're closer to reaching the frozen For now than we were yesterday. It's like what he also said that mayuch was fine It was just a little heatstroke and he had seen this a million times just so unactical morally wrong of him to do that Yeah, it's it's fucking crazy like I I feel sick for it for these parents like I don't know I don't know what they were thinking. I don't know how you don't have everything in place to have everything ready And I don't know what the school is doing because what was this three four weeks ago? Yeah, and like there's a protocol where when you get to to ASU I think it's through the whole athletic program like when you get there you
I don't think you're allowed to have outside workouts for the first two weeks to get acclimated to the climate like it's it's that bad Like you know, I lived there full-time guys and like sometimes you'll go on hikes with friends who aren't used to it And you're we're not talking about a workout with a green beret. We're talking about just a normal hike and halfway through They'll be they'll be like yo like we can't like we got to turn back Like that's just how it is and how the heat hits you and and once it gets to you You kind of have that feeling of like you know suffocation where you can't really breathe and like mind you like there was When and then when after the two-week period is over You're still supposed to have a cold tub present. You're supposed to have cold water ready just in case and like It's just like not something that's necessary Especially at the fact that we play a sport indoors where it's basically like air conditioning So and that's not act like ASU doesn't have all the facilities in the world. They have yeah, they have the domes They have everything you need for this so Yeah, it took a while for us to really like chime in and comment on this because you're waiting for all the details to come out and obviously once like the
The players have now spoken up It's pretty like disheartening to hear how it all went down and and just something that was negligent and could have like easily been avoided and It's just like this is horrible. It's horrible and and and I had somebody to reach out to me like you guys got to talk about this We knew we'd wait a little bit and I was waiting for the coach to be like like what's going on And then apparently the players also said there was a lie in which they that the I don't know if it was the coach or someone said No, they had water they had water and the players in the letter were like no we were doing a bear crawl We were doing a bear crawl and the guys who finished first were able to go get like a sip of water and Mayuch had been like in the back right and by the time he finished They're like back in line back in line back in line So it's like there was lying going on and it's just so unnecessary like you said biz and it's just you know My heart goes out to that family. It's fucking horrible wait You mentioned about like why was power still coaching? It's actually a really interesting situation of how he was able to continue to keep coaching
Because Arizona state has this thing called now it's named after him the Greg powers endowment coaching fund where basically donors are paying Greg powers salary So basically the school was kind of in a bind where like They couldn't really Fire him and I think that's why he's technically unpaid administrative leave They're still paying him throughout the five years of his contract because of this Greg powers endowment fund Which I think you're going to start to see a lot more across college hockey over the next few years Just so these coaches can get paid a little more But I mean how he handled this situation it's so wrong and it's so so terrible I just it's it's horrible It's really horrible situation and our thoughts and prayers go out to the Mayuch family because like I think the players too I think the players got really wrong here because they're about to go into a season They've worked their whole life to go play division one hockey and now their friend their brother their teammate They lose them right before the season and their coaches acts like nothing's wrong And it's it's all right go out there and play where closer we're frozen for now
It's horrible and I thought it was a really it was great that the team suggested Shane don't come in as the coach Would he do that? He said no one's reached out to him. Yeah, I don't know. I'm not really incredible It's also too like as a parent like when you're dropping your kid off especially to play in a college sport like You're leaving your child in this person's hands like they come and recruit we were all recruited And they're like we're gonna take care of your kid like he's family like that's not what you do to a family member So you know for anyone who's out there coaching and you want to be hard on the kids and tough in them up It's not the play to to do something that's not ethically right like you got you got to look out for these kids like they're your own whether you're coaching You know pee we hockey might hockey or in the NHL like you really you got to know Went to stop and went to push them wait you you trained with Mike Boyle for years And I thought he he tweeted out in article that I think he wrote a few years ago And it's the title is military workouts are for people in the military They're not for hockey players hockey players should do hockey workouts. Yeah, let alone when it's 115 degrees out
So yeah heartbreaking story um, you know Thinking of their fit of of Matthew's family and and and the players on the team who I think get going this weekend at Lyndonwood So I will see what happens there, but just just a brutal story. So with that we're gonna throw it over To my keen Stanley Cup champion multiple times over with all these different teams a great interview We sat down with him a while back. Oh, I think thanks for having a couple clicks for three cups here
I think one of only 11 players to win three different cups with three different teams. I think it's eight. I'm seeing eight So we got different numbers there. Maybe you know the exact You know seven those seven guys canceled on us today. That's why we had you. I'm not kidding Like I said, like it's three in the morning the lice just came on and I'm the last one at the bar And that's that is the Something something happened between Friday and out Speaking of that as has that happened in your career? Is that was that also a career achievement? I have seen that happen this okay. I have seen that half played the fifth Just like Fauci Just I played the fee give us 111 today of course. I plead the fifth. It's like nice interview. See you later Mike Fuck I hate these things when I first asked you It seemed like you weren't necessarily down where you're like, ah, I'm not really the interview type and Clearly you're not type of guy to talk about yourself But we appreciate you coming on man incredible career so many games play we were looking through the coaches that you played for like so many iconic guys too
And we can't that we can't wait to dive into it But I guess I'll start out with this what do you do in hour? Are you still back home in Winnipeg? I'm back in Winnipeg. I still do a player development for for the Winnipeg Jets and and You know just live in live in the summer it goes by fast obviously There's always something going on with with hockey as you guys know So one more month and then we're getting going again So you're going like rookie camp you're seeing the prospects that they have all year long you traveling to see those guys Yeah, seeing the guys going on me ice to the moose Because they're back in Manitoba, so It's best of all the world you know the kids are great kids You know they all want to learn and then you get to be the little more spicy with the pro guys So I love it you know my my boss Jimmy Roy who's who's Had a player development great guy one of my best friends He cares about the kids and where were Where he's loved to see every kid make it to the NHL now for you I mean you've been in the NHL obviously now work and since 1988 like are you telling these kids like hey listen I've seen it all done it all you better fucking listen up here some don't know who I am and it's and it's awesome
um, you know it's The game evolves every year and and it's uh It I don't know how this point that there it's not so much more hockey It's about today young person you have to find a balance with with today's young person where there's different from what we were So so it's it's um it's not so much about hockey It's about when they're healthiest craft for the first time in four years from other college junior you know Where is let's go for a coffee through things out and then get back on track. So um it's it's something we never had um You know, I'm sure you know we We got the old uh your playing shitty figured out you know play better um it's just We we want to make sure the kids you know know that we were support them and we'll do everything we can to make them you know Make the big club. So you just like eat breathe and sleep hockey Was there a period of time though after you were done and you were tired where you you needed like a few years off
Where you're like I just need to decompress because like wit said you played 1100 games and then you went on and I actually played against you When you played with the Manitoba Moose in those five last years So it seems like you couldn't give it get enough of that as a player was there a time where you needed to step away a little bit Yeah, I took two years off and that was the best thing guys said you know take take up your ex off relax And I don't know what I did all day, but I came home exhausted and but the one thing I did miss you know Was the game and it's not it's not coaching coaching as you guys know too is a whole different level like that that's a That's a serious religion. They just they live it that they live everything about it They're at the ring from 80m till till 5 p.m. reinventing the game Our our job is no more different where we go see our kids Spend time with them make it sure things are good off the ice and then once they do turn pro pushing them in the right direction to make sure that that they There's only four spots for a team. You know that it's a it's a team sport
But you have to make sure that you're doing everything to beat out of veteran player and that's how easy thing to do So you grew up in Winnipeg correct god's country absolutely. Okay. All right. Yeah man Man from Winnipeg they love it. Revos from Winnipeg right? Biz he's always rantin ravin about it But we could talk about your career and your cops But when I played against you as biz mentioned you're in Manitoba when you went there Were you like oh maybe one more year? Were you still like I'm going as long as I can like this is not gonna be hey one year in the minors and I'm done No, the game was we got we got locked out You know during the was it oh four I guess the final thing is that that one year Um, I couldn't play because their veteran was full remember back in the day. They only signed But you know fire sick veteran to think one exemplar I believe so I actually had had skied by myself for the whole year and then the following year came back and and played so It was it was by far hands down. I was lucky enough to play A little bit in the NHL but hands down those five years was the funnest time playing hot
Marilla no way it was just amazing like my kids get to watch me play My folks were were still around To watching my my my family my my buddies came to watch me play They used to give me shit text me in the period going fucking nice pass Well like all the time. I know it was it was by far met some great kids um, but it was it was a great time and We got cheated as a NHL team because they they were vined for their team So we got cheated like an NHL team we we charted which was Unheard of back in the day for a NHL team Um, and they just treat us great. So it was hands down the funnest time some of the best NHL jerseys of all time too Those that big moose head on the jersey and uh you guys you got we uh I think it was zen and can opka who told the one story uh about when piercegic livery was kind of mothin off that when they had like four or five Heavy weights on their team and then can opka and those guys bought the newspaper do you remember that game specifically?
Like legit at the line like i mean so much over the line where i was kind of getting a edgy where you just don't cross the line You like like don't cross the red line like do not come over the red line and he's he's so close to it's like Holy shit like he's he's And then he brings it out. I'm like, what the hell's going on like well like what is happening? And then think oh my god is is that for a piece? And uh obviously pc was a nice kid, but he was a friend's kid didn't understand what was going on And so after the game had explained to him He thought that was a fine saying in the world Yeah for him. Yeah, you know we're thinking okay. We're gonna get absolutely foreshed But you know by these guys so it's like but he just loved it. So it's uh he was uh He was a good player con opka. He was a tough he was a tough your hard-knife player Do you remember what he said specifically in the paper that got them going? And now it was it was something where he was young he get we just Other side them, you know called him up. He said I I don't care. I'll fight anyone And I guess he didn't read the room very well because like I said they had four absolute mutants on that team
And it's like we're just kind of think okay. It's we don't match up for that like Shut up like in French and English just don't don't say anything, but now it was it was uh Those are fun time. We had some good you know some good battles against Syracuse I'm looking at those Manitoba teams So our Neil was the coach there and you had Lavie left for a year so he went to Vancouver from Manitoba or Vignol Vignol Vignol sorry excuse me. Yes Wow, we had right you know we had Vignol from there. So we had we had you know really good coaches we had Well, we we had really good teams really good players really good American players, but just you know we we lost her Hershey. I believe in the finals one year I don't know how we we won a game because they were so good. They had Carlson. They had Newworth as a goalie They were yeah that that that Juru kid at these courts Yeah, he was a joke Keith the coin board. Yeah, I think I think green with Mac green was or Mike green was on that team too Yeah, like I don't know how we won a game. So so it's it's we were We kind of you know put up a good battle, but it was well, you know, we had a good team and and some some
Some great coaches that that Manitoba bar and must have been rocking when you guys were in the finals then It was great. It was you know, Winnipeg's very passionate and you know you only said this was back then when they were Still vying for their initial team to to come back. So You know, they they want to prove that they're a big league city Did they open up the upper ball because I think when I played there Yeah, because they would close the upper bowl to kind of compact the bottom But that's awesome that they had that many people what 15,000 rock in the building during that Cup run for you guys now it says Winnipeg Manitoba like were you born in the city or were you maybe on the outskirts somewhere Because sometimes people live in the boondocks and they just say we winnipeg no born and raised in Winnipeg and it's Fuck like it's I got so much shit from jaystron holly when I did there That's like I just would you guys just shut up? It's it's it's it's like Winnipeg is Winnipeg's my home. I can bad mouth it all all you guys can't yeah fuck off. Oh, hey, okay I love canana. I'll I'll I like I went I went there for that pink wittney tour
I think I ended up bumping into you when I was there I bumped in you there you were doing the the western tour your stop day Every time I think years ago and he was butt chugging pink wittney in a bar and Winnipeg it was Dale Morningstar my my co-pilot and then we had Rick from red deer was the driver number Didn't you get new in accident or something? Pulled over on that oh no, I think we lost our bumper, but that was yeah, I think somebody stole it in Manitoba They good for resale. I guess out there Of course Manitoba, okay, maybe it was Regina. Maybe it was in Regina It was sass obviously when you grow up in winnipeg you probably probably automatically play hockey Was your father a player like who really got you into it and what made you fall in love with it? Not my dad my brother my older brother played not at a high level, but played a really hard game And that's why I got my game from I guess and growing up I was a believe it not a Boston Brewin fan So I was I was a Tura Riley Bobby Samos
You know that type of era well you'd only see him on when they're a hockey night in Canada Maybe or that only be two Canadian teams then much raw boss and much else cargo Toronto You know New York wherever was but No, our old family was Yankee fans and Bruins fans. So that's that's That's the team family. I know sorry fellas. It's things a little bit. I know But it's uh, it was it was awesome even for you obviously not being drafted like and you mentioned your hard nose type of play Is do you think that's what kind of help you get uh your leg up in the NHL and sticking just playing that hard nose game as a I mean you were Somewhat undersized at that era right for sure like I wasn't I wasn't a skater and I've I've thought about this for years for you like why why did I make it when like with so many other good players out there that did the right things I don't know why but I knew uh, I knew them. I was not a very good skater. Um, I guess check boxes for not playing I wasn't a good skater. I was little uh, I didn't have a lot of offensive touch
But I wanted to play hard. So that's how I knew I would you'll hopefully be people over jobs And uh, it turned out that I was lucky enough to uh, hook up with Pat Burns Um, my first year pro in in Sherbrook and you know had a understanding where my my father was a warden also so I I understood what What people expect when you're the boss So it's Pat was a police officer so when Your boss is telling you to do something you do it period So so uh, when he says listen, you're not going to play if you don't work if you don't do a b and c and do it very well So myself and a few other players really really concentrate and and play it a lot because We we listened to the coaches staff. So it kind of worked out where um, it's really not rocket science I don't know why kids don't figure out sometimes where they get pissed off when your coach tells you to do something and they don't do it I don't know why they're shocked But it's it's it's something where we've uh, you know, I've I've
Adapt where your your coach gives you ice time your coach the one gonna help you to go up and your coaches the one that Um has a chance for us to win games. So Uh, it worked out with that philosophy was Burns. He a uh, players coach because I mean back then the coaches were a lot harder than they are now But everyone I talked to especially Ray Bork like raves about Burns. He just how good of a guy he was he was outstaying person really Search of art and and pat burns were the two people that you know that changed our life professionally They they gave me chance to play. I got a triode with you know with with Montreal Um, and then and then son of contract after that camp and then really you know believed in me as a player. So um I don't know again. I don't know why it happened. I don't know why because I said I got I got four or five buddies that um That were way better players. They did everything right. There were good people good teammates Hard workers create skill and didn't play and I don't know why that is but it's just the
Hockey gods were shining down on me. I guess um, you got to play uh Junior and and the dub in moustache Like we talk about some of these iconic names the old flurry was there as well What was it like playing with a young the old flurry? He was he was he He was like he was a I know I I don't want to start the you know a shitshow right now, but two people that aren't in the hall of fame right now Our feel-thory and pavarbeek in my opinion. I was like I don't know how they're not in the hall of fame right now Um, especially being undersized Um, you players playing in an era where it was it was hard and and and these guys have unbelievable stats. They won Um, they they they led their team. So um, the the was a he's a he's an unbelievable kid And it's the only the only time where uh, he was at dick um and just go Just about beat up by me and uh, our line was kelly buckberger feel at myself
So it was it was it in wusha and we used to play against saskatoon sashtoon had a bunch of mutants too like they were just stupid dead young windall back there and um Who was You know Biz you could answer this too. It's You'll you'll you'll fight anyone, but if you don't have to it's okay very right right you'll it's and wendell was a guy where you would fight But you really didn't want to if you didn't have to so uh, Theo stuck wendell one night and wendell lost it. Oh no Refs couldn't get him three reps are on there. He is throwing them around the grind doll. He's better So me and buckie basically on the ice paper rocks. He's just saying okay, who's gonna fight him? Well, like it's basically get more and he's like no Jesus, so finally the refs get on him. He he gets thrown out period ends. I have to hold buckie back from beating up feel In the dress room from saying don't you ever do that again? Don't you ever don't wake the sleep and drag and ever look like to do not ever I don't care
Like who else but not him and that's the only time where like Theo kind of got Out of control about that long winded story No, we love that's what we want. No, that's what we love more of those we'd appreciate Keith Keith and I were just playing golf and we were with Ray Whitney In a group and we were talking he Theo Fleury came up and he was saying how much of a joke it is He's not in the hall of fame. He's like I know myself and every other undersized guy after oh Theo Fleury Yeah, like a lot for for us making it so like to hear you talk about him that way too guys love them He was he was unreal like his celebrations too. Yeah, he's he's just he Like he's he's five eight Yeah at the at the you know at the highest like he just he just think he the things he did at that at the highest level plain For years It's just unbelievable like it's just I don't know I don't know how it happened. We all know how it happened obviously it's
You can't really Bad most of the people had getting in the whole fame, but didn't go over too well um, you know, you it's you want to make sure that uh, you know It's fair and in my opinion it's just my opinion but him and Pavan B should be involved in so you were Undrafted to the NHL were you were you drafted to the WHL? No, back then you're you're On a protective list so so Winnipeg basically moved to Bushaw and those uh so that's that's kind of way to happen back then Okay, night because so you got I saw you got to play a little bit for the for the uh for the Manitoba Junior team there for the for the Winnipeg Warriors Winnipeg Wars a credit couple game and all younger so it's just not and then we had to move there So it's a great a great little town met you know met my wife there of Four years and and it's uh, it's a it's a fantastic way while you were playing junior no no no We we we met in junior and then carried on and that uh We were engaged for five years from read that fellas. Yeah
Well probably because you were so young right like at least you get a little bit of leeway when you're that young We we did the long you long-term relationship thing we did the uh, but it's She's a unlabeled person in a Milwaukee's kind of world. Is was it was she at your high school there like how'd you guys meet? No high schools in Winnipeg. Oh, is that I based these doctor until she had to you know finally grow up with me I'll do it okay She's like if you promise me you'll be involved in the NHL for the next 50 years. I'll marry you Deal a five foot nine really shoe-skinned with you know some enhance hey what can go wrong? Yeah But then yeah they like NHL paycheck style that's for sure that's sure was was that team and uh The junior team in Winnipeg was that the team I saw a fight of yours when you you looked like you were 14 years old, but you had the Cooperals on uh, it was no never never fought and uh it was That was back in Wushon you guys wore those in Wushita. That's unbelievable The speaking of gear with my keen the
People think of surge federov with the Nike skates. I kind of think of you I remember you rocking the Nike wheels. No, you didn't yeah, he did I'm surprised Nike said no, you can't wear those Because they're because they're too much like You don't skate well enough for them. I think you look quicker in those things. I swish the other way though It was new balance. Yeah Not quicker less less slower for sure Yeah, I said I swish it was walk So so you're undrafted how did you get your invite to to Montreal like did you get to go to NHL camp before you went to Sherbrook Like how did that all go about? No, I just got a call I was lucky enough to play with my buddy John Ferguson Jr In in Winnipeg when we were younger and then search of art also surge search finished his career in In Winnipeg So I play with with search junior and then we got to be good friends and then um Um, I didn't get drafted and then they just gave me a try out and and lucky enough that it work out and you lit it up that year
You you had a big year for rookie in the in the NHL I would say right and then oh big time you never got you never got called up that season Were you kind of waiting for it and did you have any idea the next year you'd be full On Montreal no, it was it was one of those things. I don't think it's uh, you know The game is you know, obviously 30 years ago and it's it changed so much where Um 25 goals or you know, whatever it was was a okay year like it's not a it's not a fantastic year like it's Um, you know, you have guys celebrate now where you know, they think they're Bob you're with you know 15 goals are here. Well, that's a fit. I prefer a fan base though if you signed an undrafted player and then that year in the AHL 25 I think most fan bases are all right. We might have something here. Let's take a compliment Oh, it's just I don't know it's it's I'm not sure how was supposed to work. You know, you're you're you're you went down and I I do remember that it's it's um My the game evolves like every week as you guys know like when you're a camp and my first camp I had a pretty good camp
um and I was feeling good and then The camp just took off like it's just after a first couple days of camp then you know, you're we played 12 exhibition games back then so After a first couple games you're like, I don't know, you know what maybe I can play it Not just level and then it just takes off. You can't keep up. I remember my my fall my my second camp I couldn't wait to get sent back to junior like it was I'll just out of my league like just out of my league So so then you know, you go back to junior and then you go you know, you come out the camp you feel a little Little more comfortable the game slows down And then you know, you had down to the American League you have you play against bigger stronger better players And then you just feel ready that that following year when you you know come to camp and you You hopefully find a spot and in earnest spot and back then again Way easier back then you could earn a spot. It's not
You know, there's no cap back then you didn't have to worry about You know money and the else you just picked the best players So that was definitely beneficial for me and also the fact I guess that like you went from having pat burns in the minors to where the following year When you made the NHL he was then head coach of the Montreal Canadian so obviously getting that like getting that full year with him and earning his trust was massive for sure and and that's again like he he he basically Didn't invincible the movie invincible with the Joe Papalini. He basically called me in. I thought I was getting sent down And he he said can you Play this from me all year. I said For sure 100% well, what yes again, and I I made the team there and it was I was in shock and happy and overwhelmed and Uh couldn't believe it was happening to me and that year did you guys go to the cup final right to the cup finals and lost and that was the kit all These shit to your boy feel what do you remember about that series like I was six, but I think of like
Lanning Macdonald well, Lanning Macdonald like when you see highlights and new and dyke was on that Calgary team, right as a young player and you're this so You know dumb we are I assume that we'd go every year to the cup finals like that. That's your first year and um, I remember I was saying congratulations to Uh Lanning Macdonald because it was I used to watch him also and he was a he's a legend. I was so happy for him And I just I was upset obviously, but I was uh I was just so happy for him and it was and then we don't go to the france for a while and like hey, it's not working out the way it's supposed to So it's it's it's something that you kind of don't take for granted now especially you're looking back and and um, yeah, really good teams in the hL right now that are Schum are supposed to get there Um, but it just it doesn't work out the way. It just there's there's so many good players and good teams and You kind of have to you kind of have to Everyone's got to get together at the right time and you need luck from the hockey gods I was gonna say I was young in the cup finals
And then I was like yeah, we'll be going back and I never snipped another one But you actually won three so you saying it it did work out in the end It did work out and I still think they're the dumbest people alive But if you don't have good gold, then you don't win. Okay. I had I had bad you off for two Ed bill for for one So it's it's they were and they were unbelievable. So it's it's it's And that's not taken away from the Paul Fin players that I was you know playing with like you have to score goals, but um, you need good going to end in the win and it's uh um, I don't know I don't know why it happened, but it's just you know you you your first year you you learned so much from it where You know, we didn't deserve to win. You know, you you'll get back We didn't win a game at home during the during the Sanca finals. So you don't you don't deserve to win Um every other team when they you know the battle your your home ice is just huge You you have to win your games at home. So that's that that's why you play for it. So it's um, I'm just really lucky that I was lucky enough to go
A couple of times, you know, one one three times lost twice. So it's it's no fun losing Yeah, it's before you go here. I just want you to elaborate. You said that they're the dumbest people alive But you need them to win as far as gold tenders Gold tenders. Yes for sure. Okay. What can you elaborate on that? Well, no like it just they're not very bright Like it's come on think about it. You got to be dumb to have a puck firing Yeah, guys your guys are written pox at you them top is real hint you're right in the head And you're and you're pissed off when it doesn't hit you. Yeah, that's a good explanation of insane They're insane. Who's the smartest one you ever had the guy who led in every shot True true. Yes, the ones I never got hit. I guess they weren't very good, but they were the smartest ones Obviously being in Montreal for that whole ordeal when patty asked for the trade or whatever happened sitting behind the bench the owner there like How did that? How did that go over in the locker room like what was what were you guys talking about the next day? That must have been an absolute shit show weren't you involved in the package that went over? I was I was in patty's back pockets
So it worked out worked you know worked out pretty well, but it's uh I remember two burns. He like burns. He was very passionate and If you look at the games, they'll you'll back and you'll go back and you'll watch the games Back then there was no glass behind the in the stands. I think you're right in the stands and so Behind that section with center and moulson and you know, Mrs. Moulson and the whole family of yields and burnjee's language was incredible Like is and and it's literally right in the whole section like you was You my self and brank yield crest a younger player who you know we broke in together While the game's going when he used to red line and just lose it And he was snapping we said go go oh my god like he's He's saying that with with center moulson right behind him makes like He was unbelievable But he was he was such a such a good person and the trade the trade um
It's Oh, like it just it happens so quickly and in the the Uh The fine thing leading up to it that it's not not really fine. We'll back then so it it happened um So after my wife and I tried to find Patrick so um he got out on the whole bit and uh We're we're we're trying to find so I we called his His house and Michelle's white picked up and a worse patty that like we're gonna come see And make sure things are okay and Um so so we we go out there and um So we had to meet we had a meat and like a back hell like it was some really It was a back but it was a really shitty movie like it was like something to get a meat in a back alley And then the lights would flash from a car coming out as to meet Somewhere and then we go to some place where you know peer laquois Was the agent we go to his place because there's media around his house
So it was really and then finally we see him was like really Like cocaine dagger type thing and then we saw him and he was you know, he was okay, but it was it was When the trade happened he was devastated and because You're you're talking about Patrick Wa who's had much all icon who thought he'd be playing for for the much Okay, for for the next 20 years And then once that once that happened it was it was uh, I'm sure a shock for we've talked to people about this before who said because Uh, lamar came in that season right and then they'd kind of been battling They'd been budding heads most of the year somebody mentioned to us I thought and then when that all broke down and came down I just was curious if you had any idea that you'd possibly be be moving out as well Like did you think you were on the move maybe even before that It's on the move because I got miss quarter for saying I don't oh, I heard about this What was it? It was about fresh speaking right? I never I never said I never saw it was about You know learning friends. So one of one other reports asked me I just kind of named captain
And one of the reports asked me they said hey, what did the guy speak in the restroom? I said I'm most guys speak English Next day in the papers came or fugitive to learn our language Use like which is not true. I was taking lessons at the time So it didn't go too well Um, I was getting glued in you know much all forums. So I knew something what happened Um, but you're right. So uh, Mirro Tromblay was a head coach. So him and Patrick used to You used to bat a little bit like you used to just kind of see I'm didn't see eye to eye so He left them in during that game and it's The one thing too that that people don't know is that so we were We we were gonna watch um The Russian five from Detroit. They're fed her off Cause off like just the We were supposed to guard them Vinny Denver showed up for for seven o'clock for eight o'clock game So so he got stuck in traffic and the whole bit too. So
I think he was fine nothing before that anthem was over So so it was we're like holy shit. So you love we're we're on the bench five four five six one What's what's going on like Why isn't he pulling patty and then five seven and then finally, you know, you know, you know They did and then Patrick did is I said I played my last game as much okay and then That's how it went down. Wow. Like a colossal storm basically is is what happened Yeah, and there's there's something that maybe maybe Mary was there and he wanted to prove a point or I'm not sure I'm not sure everyone, but I got worked out pretty well for me. I got I got stuck in you'll patty's back you'll back pocket went to Colorado Played with some whole thing players and one again and Life was good and you got to stop taking your French lessons that's your battery A couple bags of barbecue chips and you're fine for the night Yeah Um, did you ever try to like clear the air or like grab that reporter who wrote that and we're like yo, what the fuck
No, you moved on from it and it's it's just too bad that it's it's Much y'all was unlabeled place to play it really is like it is it's a The passion that people have is simply incredible and it's the the players that I got a chance to play with and learn from like a player layer Robinson Bob do you need patty? Wow, chilly Uh, who the stories are true like he used to work out we used to work out in the sauna Uh ride the bike in the sauna like it was it was unbelievable tricky muller a carbo Just unbelievable guys that you learn how to play the game from Um, and then you move on to you know, you learn you know, you learn so much From those guys and they're just tremendous people that that showed all of us young players how to play And and then you you you played harder regardless and I remember one night when we we played hard for it one night We won we won four one And we got boot off the ice But we we didn't play hard enough we didn't play the right way So it's just a whole whole whole different level of of doing things the right way Do you what do you remember the most from the celebration when you guys won it there?
Oh, he he could he could slide them back for sure Some believeable like legendary like half your legendary The the thing I remember like we used to get out like we got after for probably a couple weeks And as the week we lived right basically down from Crescerdry So my wife and I used to basically fall down and hit our front door Right in right in the front so it's but the one thing I do remember it was probably two weeks were still there And those three in the morning were at Right Winnie's Winston's on you know St. Catherine's and it was And I I was sober and this is after After in one for probably 12 hours And I was like what's happening like am I am I treating you a alcoholic like what's happening? I don't know what's I don't know what's happening So I got panic I called over to my wife today Are you drunk? Said no, and I really I booked I booked two flights back home we went back to Winnipeg That's when you knew that that's when I knew it's time to go look like it's Drank yourself sober That that's a that's a definite fact that can happen
That's when you know I guess okay time to go Time to go back to Winnipeg which didn't help the cause because I saw my buddies for the fun But those good time did you guys have the day with the cop and everything like they have now we we did We got it I didn't get it actually in no mature. I got it lucky enough. I got it with Colorado and Dallas So I I Nothing crazy My my my Nana was still around she was a hundred three hundred and three years old So I took it to her Folks home and the people there it was it was fantastic. It really was like see The there's a lot of people you know, there's a lot of tears and people for the first time seen it and and the names that were on it and and then we We had some fun with it that night and that was it and there was you'll go in the next day That's on the way to more it's kind of crazy you hadn't scored that year and it only 18 games the Montreal trade and you got 10 Throughout the rest of the year with Colorado and then you guys you guys get it done like the the
How quick that happened it must have been crazy when you get in that locker room and you see those names You realize that holy shit like I love Montreal, but this team It's a lot better team than what you had unreal like there there and the move to they they You know rest in peace. They got clothes with you and and you know, he was a he was a game changer when he came and Did they you know they made some unblable moves to make it happen and You know the the players like just joy sack a pure forest bird, but they the um Peppy the the supporting cast of players. They had Scotty young and Adam dead martian um, you know, it was just incredible like reach was there um, they're just It just goes to show you that you need that that secondary scoring that signary group of players that um that have to chip in so it's it's Playing for you know getting traded there especially with especially with them be Quebec right you know I I hate those guys fucking hate like hated them like you there was
No chance that I would like anyone on the team and then I'll see that change once you you want to play for them and Also worked out pretty well. I forgot to ask you that when you were playing with Montreal because at that time Like they still had the team in Quebec What were those games like when you were playing in Quebec like like even even in Quebec City on the road like did they just give it to you guys? Was a pretty was it was it was it vulgar was it like what was it like it was it was it was it was it was rough Like it was it was not as rough as as the 80s like where they were these tough bench cleaner balls They like when when Chris down was there and um like it was we used to watch those on TV and it was absolutely like Lunacy they like like Like two handed tops behind the leg and and um, you know running over goalies and but it was it was It was heated for sure more probably more From from two teams right you were you like the back or you you love Montreal So so it wasn't really uh, you know, we just played hard
But you we just played each other so much. That's why you ate them where they write on like the cusp of a cuz I believe Colorado won the first year in Colorado, right? So we lost so so we Um, they're gully coach because we played we we played when we won We played Quebec in the first round or second round and I believe their gully coach came out and said that we've solved Paddy was uh, we know how to play against pady wall And pady wall took up personally and then we won four straight nothing like that gully coach I know Gully coach she she's party They didn't even have the goalie out of save the puck bud just don't why are you giving interviews That's why they didn't have gully coaches for so long after Didn't read the room very well. So it's uh So we we you went on but but that team and then the following year was where we went there and then we uh You know, I'm familiar with a with a really good team a young young peer fours birch old sad kick But if they're still in Quebec, there's no way they're trading Patrick Waff from Montreal took Quebec
So it's like would they even did did they have the money to even go out and make deals like that or is it because they went to Colorado They were able to do that with new ownership I believe cousin cousin to Colorado I think Pierre Laquois very smart man very very great GM So he was he was really New his players he wanted And then you know, they were they were good seven for that was a outstanding goalie Just once you get patchy wire. I think that's the that's the next level So so and that's what you know, that's what put them over the car. That's great like Statistically speaking that was sack x best year 120 points that year 95 96 He did it six times which I knew he had a lot of points, but that's crazy He was so good like playing with him. It must have been incredible I just being young and seeing his snapshot. You're like, how's that even possible then that's before like synergies He was pretty small too right off the ice like was he a small guy? Yeah, no, I know about it But a hard worker like he was in the gym all the time like he was he was a
Again, I I get asked all the time. Who's the best player? Uh, I I played with I can't answer that I like I don't I don't know who who you would pick as your as your star lineup like you have like I said You had layer rancid bob geek e carb no patcher wall Kirk Mueller Colorado Joe sakit Peter Forsbergh Valerie Kaminsky Cloving me again Dallas Joe Nguyen Dyke Brett Hall Mike Badano Sergey Zuboff The Sadim Brothers in Vancouver playing with Wayne Greski in in your New York Uh, a young covalent who I So we play three and three after I couldn't get the puck physically Or mentally off of Alexi cold. Oh, yeah, I heard he was different. I couldn't take the puck off him Well, he was a tank right skilled unless I coco bonked him over the head. I've been get the puck off Wait, were you with were you with Wayne is last year the
Is last second to last you Second last year, okay. Yeah, he was like he's Only one year and I actually got the uh Got to see him for the first time in a long time at uh at at peppy service And we were he was telling us a He's first thing he says he says oh you fucker. I said why like well geez what happy says I remember the time You and screwy put 25 pound weights in my bag at the whole start getting to carry my bag And and all your hockey carts we filled up his bay with all of our hockey cards from there Because you used to get all our paxism You but he just both threw his back out. He said tonne of grab his hockey back from From putting his weights in it. So it's It was but he was uh obviously With with you know playing with Wayne uh Brian Leach Um, you know, I don't know. I don't know Wayne hands down Uh the best player but after that is uh They're all absolutely incredible What are Ron you got to play with so many unreal players like that
And all and all unbelievable human beings And I can and I can say I tell you I tell you not. Well say who's the biggest prick I can't tell you like none of those guys They're all at and and every player was unbelievable player with all different personalities Somewhere kind of raw raw someone lose their mind some red line some wouldn't some wouldn't say anything and just Play so so it's it was kind of interesting watching different players from different teams and Um no one wants to get treated But after all like you just get to see these guys and see them in their element and they just you just thrive when the pressure's on Yeah, this the raw the coaches you've had too because then you go to Dallas you have hitch Oh god the stories okay. All right. Let's go. Let's well even even Colorado when you wanted you had Crawford as a head coach Quenville and Jacques Marta as assistant coaches. That's a pretty heavy lineup right there. That's a good Jacques Marta Nice. Jacques Marta. Oh, yeah, he's a friend. I took your lessons for you buddy
All and and those three two uh Coco like all great people all great and and Crow had some he had some classic snaps like he used to lose his mind Wouldn't he kick guys? He used to boot guys in the back. He used to He used to break some sticks. He used to Yeah, I don't want to throw him under the bus, but he was I used to make me giggle castle He used to lose his mind like I'd be I'd be like this and then we'd be kind of like this and it's just half but But but all all great coaches hitch to like it's it's well documented hitch, you know, I went on Hollywood and Tasters Um, you know, podcasts I've promised two people that I'd go on their podcasts those two I had to do it and Your guys too biz I promise you years ago. I would do it. My Um, I'm here today. But I'm telling you right now. I'm never doing another podcast. That's it. This is the last one because I'm starting one guys I'm here to announce it the hits stories are are well documented and I I told a couple on
On Chasing the holiday, but It's just the game has changed so much. I don't think it would happen today where um, we He was he was hard hitch was hard like he used to rip on us all the time regardless of be one games lost games Wherever it was he wanted to perform game So one practice so one practice we were not as good with every comes off from getting changed and Uh, he Comes out because I had better be better tomorrow. Can't say I fuck off. Yeah, what it yeah, so it's like So but he so he comes back And he grabs me by the jersey and he has me pinned up in my stall like I'm unchanged and stuff he has me pinned up He says fuck you fuck you. He was like so So somehow I get superhuman strength and I I throw him back and I'm Now I throw him on the ground and I got my chin. I have my my knees on his on his shoulders And I'm in the middle room and I'm on I'm on his chest in the room
And then so I'm I'm in the room The room turns into a prison everyone's are get him kick him get them get them Punch him in the face get him I'm like Guys are boot him guys are guys are like lose their mind. It's just so I finally get up to yeah Yeah, it's like so he walks by me says Ah, you're lucky came my skate were and done It's like But that's all he says and the walks out he loved it though right when you gave it back He loves he loved it like he absolutely loved it He didn't like it shanked by the but the six defenseman was on the ground, but Like he just he just you know he he he thrived on on I don't know pitting his players against us like he was just so So hard like he was just an absolute He won the perfect game I get it and I Again the the best one time I told it on the last broadcast that it just it's just really it tells him what type of what
Our person is like we we dominated the road trip and this is after like this after the you know we played Florida whoever was and and We there's they were even in the game after we're expecting somehow we didn't play night of you know the next night So we're going to go out in Florida after a big win Comes in come in lock it down. He gave a shit like he was shit again So I looked down at at at at Holly and he Was I don't know he kind of goes what's I don't know so he sees me Says what's like like what like what I said I don't know what you guys are pissed off either your coaching staff We're pissed off like what do you pissed off that we're Look we're we guys didn't play well. You're passing the shitty you're tracking the shitty you're this and that See that whatever like it says fuck we won the road trip Well you swept it's things are good. You know fuck off. No, it's not gonna win that way and so someone down here Again not Holly and not me because yeah fuck off get out of here get out get out get out
The whole the whole room starts chanting get out get out So so he he goes cute cute. He's kind of screaming around the room and Funny leaves. Yeah Turn the music on and then everyone's happy again So so that's that's like the the type of guy he was so so next day we're thinking that he's gonna be in a bad mood or pissed off So we wrote in Florida. We kind of get after one and um We're all waiting in line. There's three guys waiting in line and we're kind of really foggy Waiting for our coffee in line. It comes out. He's happy as punch. Hey guys. How are you? Hey, it's uh How's the night good? Hey, did you catch a game last night? Did you No, I didn't walk off you last night. No, I'm like no it's at the elbow room Saturday night in Florida No, I didn't stay home and watch hockey. I'm sorry. No. Did he ever address to you when you when you Pinned him on the grass and ever like oh, we got it got a little carried away there. It was just never spoken of again
No, no, he thinks he would have took me if if it escapes were done up I think he might have Mike honestly Well, where are you St. Louis camp? He would come on. He would barely have him done up He he his neck his ankles would be buckled in like a V and and he would like waddle around and guys would just be firing pox at his feet the entire time and then and then because he basically couldn't skate across the ice at that time They would put the board right by where you came out and I think it was at Steve Otte or was it one of the guys I think Steve Otte was still there with uh With yep or somebody they would they would grab the board every time they would skate it to the other side of the ice So just so he would finally have to end up coming over like they would just treat him like like shit Like but like give it back to him because he was giving it to them all time Yes, yes, and he was like he he knew if he gave a shit before a practice I was probably dumb because we were gonna do shit and I used to put all the pox right by the gate So he couldn't step on the ice
Like he couldn't so he had a landmine get off get off there He's holding on to the side of bench and so it was just and then finally he got on the ice and like you know It said we used to we used to fire pox like at his blades and just The speed wall would happen and it wouldn't go down, but Yeah, he was uh but but again my my I said it last time too my my disclaimer the hits where The one thing that I never said uh he was a bad coach. He was a very good coach He he he prepared his teams very well and And hold everyone in the right direction to make sure that we were doing everything to win the Stanley Company to that Were you there when he got stuck in the hot and in the bathtub? I was mod the hot tub No, he got stuck in the back tub in the room and thankfully they had the room for and if room phone next to the The bath and yet to call it one of the boys to come help him out Oh, my Where did you ever heard that one? No, I've never heard that maybe I just made it up. I love my key. He carries a toaster anything
I thought that year though when you guys won it in Dallas. I was just looking at the numbers bell four stats work Has anyone ever had stats like that in the playoffs? It's crazy He was and and Eddie too like Eddie was I say I say they're dumb they're not dumb there You know they're a little bit brain dead, but they're not dumb like Eddie was Eddie was one of the guys too like he was really ahead of his time like it used to he used to buy his own stuff Like so he used to use a paper zone stuff. He used to make his own skates And it was it was like he was a really bright guy and then sells no stuff. So it's kind of ahead of the game But he was he's he was Hands down look like Patrick was he was he was why we wanted Dallas and the the guys we had who he had you know I said like you know newly in Mike, but I know and Holly who Holly was a He's the funniest he's a biggest dick in the funniest guy you'll ever meet like it's it's I can't I can't it I get I told business at Chasers Cherry event Cub months ago that during the game like this like he was every player was was bad like every player was dog shit
Like it was if he can't pass it can't score 50 goals your dog shit So he he broke a stick and you know you you know you threw a you'll come guys throw this stuck over You know the the players going on in your grab it you walking by He grabbed my ins looked at it Sawdrew's mind dropped it came back looped around and grabbed another one in a journey the play during the play And then after the game I like I'm like hey what's the like like what are you doing like come a stick one Oh, I just where am I gonna do dump it in Like it's like what I just this Just smartass remarks like you are just a dick like it's this but and he chirp guy sticks and curves and stuff, right? Oh no wonder why Yeah He said he hated the game in the whole bit, but he was he was One of the brightest guys of about the game like he's and and since they believe not he got 700 and 90 goals where we got I still think he the better passer I really do wow
So kind of like OV people underestimate OV's playmaking ability what I would I would I would never think of OV is like I'm never thinking of Brett holer OV is passers, right? I'm never thinking of their passing ability like I would have never thought that with Brett hol Yeah, he played with Adam OV obviously so he didn't need to you know he was a you know he was a shooter but He he made a pass to Magnum Daniel like on a 2 on 1 is probably a A four-foot sauce between a 10 foot radius that just landed flat and Moe just hammered that thing like But he was to see things that people didn't see but he was Like him credit first passing just as much as scoring to be fair OV's got just 108 more assists than Brett hol Obviously, he's probably played a little longer as far as games with 758 assists OV But you're saying like okay, will you play long enough like you're fucking you're obviously getting like rebounds are being collected from a shot And and that type of thing he's not like zipping them back door tapens every night
No, he's like he's just he just he just saw things that Because he's Brett holer like he just saw things people didn't see And then he had to skill to do it like he was just he was a He was a He was a different player to play with but oh my god. He made me laugh who won the cons might that you guys won it in Dallas I'll be that you know. Yeah, oh was because I'm looking here like patty wall like those guys are a little bit of the loose cannon But I heard Eddie Balfour was a loose cannon when he played too, right? Yeah, he was he was a different bird like just like a goalie's to like it was uh We had to we had to move Marty turkle From the side of one time Because Eddie was Eddie was he he was very competitive But but we had to move him because Eddie thought he was playing with his gear and fucking with his stuff and This so just to screw him up. So we had to move him on the other side of the pole where he didn't see and Mari he marisa I'd I'd see Marty both goalies and he kind of looking me and he kind of go behind the pole kind of look and then kind of come back and
Not kind of see it because he didn't want any a lose his mind. So it's but he was Eddie was Eddie and we let him do his thing and you know again. He was helped us uh No achieve our goal. Noondike wanted wow really Yeah, I saw about four stats and I was like well, he didn't win it because it's not listed And I looked it up new and died which kind of shows that how much more the cup means and everyone knows that but like Mike couldn't even remember who won it either like we yeah, those are mad who cares we won the cup. I don't even I don't even remember Pretty wild that that will uh new and dyke was another guy who won three Stanley cups with three different teams And then obviously I believe with the clawed Lemieux was one of them of course as well, right? And then you so you guys all played together trying to think of the guys was a grant Marshall Maybe didn't mercy win Trying to think of that players that did it um But it's in their mark reki. Oh yeah reki reki dear with penguins hurricane's brooons
Uh Gord pettinger rangers red wings brooons al arbor Red wings black hawk uh may believes Larry Hillman and red noble Al arbor as in the coach. I guess so He was a fight. Oh he played Maybe a different um I gotta ask you one going back. This is actually before I think you played me on hl when The it was the world junior they had in pish jane islovakia And you were involved in that brawl where the lights went were turned out correct. We were we were What like could you take us through like how that all happened like take us through like the who you were playing against like what give us the whole run down So so we were planning against russia and we had uh we had to beat russia by I believe those two or three goals. We were winning by two at the time. So um Looking back. It's crazy to but we'll we'll kind of get that but it was um They were like the play was the game was really dirty. I guess they're really dirty game
Like as you get in cost jacked and speared and kicked in the whole bit. So um it just escalated where I was online with feel and ever sent a path Who was a first-run pick for a Chicago back the day really Nice kid, but a really tough kid win the wires crossed and the wires crossed so um It was but kind of between whistles that Uh a semi-fipe broke out and then another one started And then a five on five started and uh we were on the ice when it happened. So to this day. I don't know who left the bench first Um they they said uh and inner inner coaches were Pat Burns and a gentleman bird Templeton from the old and he was He had a a rib cage for being a really tough coach um but so Of the five on five starts and then next thing. I know I'm fighting a find the guy in the corner
Um next thing you know after that fight Um, it's a full on brawl so um Watching guys watch you guys fight whatever it is and it's Goes on for I don't know how long for probably 10 minutes, but um they cut to a commercial So that's what I was going to I can't imagine being a parent and you're watching this with my son on the ice And a customer commercial. I think I'd probably break the TV of it. You happen, but it's and they they cut they come back And it's a it's a full fledged it's still going on like there's fights. It's a full fledged bench cleaning brawl So it's they they don't know what to do the the Ref left like left the ice surface left the ice like it's basically just us fighting So I guess they decide good idea. They'll just shut the lights off So right then it's Not a good idea to do but um so I I guys are stuckering guys too guys going around and stucking guys
And knocking guys out and the whole bit so I get my My back towards them towards the board. That's all he did like kind of smart and then they flip back on again And then watching the fights again So it's but during that time like guys are kicking like guys are kicking guys. There's there's two on ones going on There's it's just mayhem like it's just kind of mayhem finally kind of dive down, but um The one thing we both team got suspended at the end of it But I was hoping that we we would continue Because they couldn't have played and I'll tell you why so I'm growing I'm grabbing our sticks and and gloves and helmets and throwing the words kids are taking it and taking off like there They couldn't have played the they couldn't have come back. I must have thrown over probably 10 helmets 25 gloves Those are gone. Were you the only guy chuck it shit over the glass? Uh, maybe a couple other guys too like maybe kind of saw me do it going. Yeah, fuck them like you know It's really shit over so it's So we unfortunately we didn't continue because like I said both teams got thrown out
Um, but I was hoping we would because they wouldn't have played I was a dick girl now you you said that the coach I forget his name who was in the old tablet You think maybe he gave a couple guys in the bench get out there Well, I'm not I'm not sure but I just I know that I know that we were on the ice when it happened and I'm happy that our guys came out I know that we got We didn't go to all you know with us. I think uh don't sherry. He you know he backed us against uh Who was the guy from cbc at the Williams was there a um and he said the black mark on on hockey and you know canain sports and Um, I just know I was on the ice and if they didn't come on the ice We would have got your hurt pretty bad um, we did the right thing. I I would if it happened again and I was mind the bench There there's no question that's happening that my guys will be protected um so this burk temple 10 I'm pretty sure he was a coach in the oh hl for the subry wolves Um, and he would he would take the seat right by the bathroom at the back like you know the coach normally sits the front
Whatty he would take he would take the pit and he would he would stretch out his legs and he would have his wife come on road trips So Telling you I'm that's love that's love Bert temp. I'm positive. This is the guy temple 10. Oh honey. Let's let's grab a seat by the Yeah, did you ever bring your wife on a road trip in jr Yeah, he coach for subry he coach for the subry wolves what guys told you that is Yeah, wife the whole ride hey click on the rosters is wife the assistant. Yeah, no she's uh Yeah, but I did I did here. I did here. I did here. I call like he was he used to hide players under the bus in the border too Like I heard yeah, yeah, that's when he was with the berry colts I think Yeah, that was the guy who did this. Yeah, berry colts Oh, what a way to rush into he wasn't even gonna let him out because they were They were family members of the guys you beat up in piazdani
That is so good Well, Mike thank you so much, man. I don't you guys got anything else for him biz. I shit you know it This is the last time I'm ever doing one of these well No, you might you could come back on here because that means you didn't do another podcast You just did a second version well you did you did mention that playing with the sitings is pretty cool I mean maybe and then you were in anything about your time in Vancouver or playing with the sitings that you remember sitings where they were unbelievable like they were Unleable to my my time I'm playing one year there And I wasn't very good. I didn't play very well. I already just didn't fit in. I was older, but I didn't really I couldn't fit in Vancouver and my my stand lowest time and my Rangers, I guess we're just Three places. I just didn't I couldn't I couldn't fit in. I just didn't I didn't play very well But my my my time at Cooper my my sitting stories is and this is crazy. They were I couldn't tell them apart Like I could not tell them apart. They're identical So they would like and they would come to practice not not talking to each other wearing the same thing
It was it was unbelievable So it's like I went hey guys fucking me now like I guess doing this on purpose to say no just kind of flu come on That's really weird. So One of them one of them chips their tooth chip their front tooth and I thought perfect This is Hank chip chip tooth Hank perfect Next game I feel like you're fucking with us right now. I'm telling you right now. It's unbelievable. They're they're their career They're you know Hall of Fame unbelievable player, but that part is was so bizarre to me. That's my time with That's too good. Uh last one for me any regret like I mean it feels you left it all on the ice Like it's like there's can't be any any or many regrets. No no my only regret is that I um playing with the Rangers I Myself and Palafontein Palafontein just came back from
His You know now retirement, but one didn't you want to play again from from concussions and We were we're on the ice and we collided during the game And that was the last time where he played and that's my my biggest regret Fuck both you guys just taking a turn like looking the other way back the puck didn't go well We he looked this way I looked at where he just collided and then he went off and then No way to get and that's my that that's because he was he was coming back and he was feeling good And he was helping us you win and he was having fun again and We had a we had a short stint, but we had a really good time is a really super guy and uh That's that has down is my biggest regret That's just an unlucky bunch. You can't blame yourself about yeah, yeah This was awesome now we thank you so much for doing Me says it's his last podcast you do five five HL podcast. There's absolutely not advanced That He's got a live call to cup recap show every night. I gotta go and Hershey's right now. We're talking about yeah

I'll tell you right now my wife's away for the weekend And there's recies everywhere. It's not allowed It's not allowed to be given to the kids for breakfast lunch in dinner But you give me Reese's peanut butter cups and Reese sent me a bunch and I'm handing them out Geez bringing them into the garden. That's what they're all snacking on during chasing goal with Mer and L.O I'm at home giving my kids Reese's peanut butter cups constantly. I'm ordering ice cream I'm then crushing up the Reese's peanut butter cup I'm also grabbing Reese's PCs, which is a phenomenal phenomenal candy if you've never had one you have to try one right now Reese's has it all the peanut butter cup is my go-to. I think it's everyone's go-to
It's that good the beautiful chocolate the amazing peanut butter all mashed into one incredible cup of Beautiful candy. That's the Reese's peanut butter cup Reese's the official candy partner of barstool sports go get Reese's wherever you shop Thank you very much my keen and that was awesome Um, and now it's time for the warthog himself oh Hello Everybody welcome to our raise world here this spit and chickless podcast how about those Boston broans one and oh Nice victory the other night. We were chasing goals didn't catch six of them But it was great to be in the bond thanks to all you'll for having me out great to see murals in Boston and G of course, though I I Was waiting for this so after the first period I went to grab a brew and a pretzel and I I musted if I get mustard
I'm wearing it so I said I'm gonna eat this out in the hallway They dropped the puck for the start of the second period. I think this the longest stretch of play I've ever seen or heard without a whistle no they went eight minutes and 51 seconds I counted before the next space off I just sent the picture over to the boys the how long the lines were to get back in Like just like I've never seen lines like this out. Oh, you can't walk down if the plays going on No, I mean come on man. I know you played, but that's the rule if you're in the in the audience. Oh, that's brutal Oh, you didn't know that no Yeah, that's what they do to that so people In the suite you don't have to deal with that I guess yeah Yeah So anyways, I yeah like she said I could have you know, it wasn't like it took forever to get in as I was standing there One of my old pals from Dorchester popped up a couple of old Catholic memorial guys haven't seen in decades. They say hey pop by pop up the suite couple guys up there Say hello and wit was funny one of the kids who was with him. He says hey, I remember which
Told the story a few weeks ago of somebody leaving a node on his windshield Well, this was the kid dicks. Yeah, it dicks this kid oh, that guy's the man Conovan dozer is his bingo right there this guy right here. So it kind of I think it was sort of a chip That's full circle moment because he told me the story. I said oh my god. We've told that on the show because you know He didn't want to bother you and I saw you know, he told the story about come up and say hello anytime And you know wit and public probably with the kids maybe a little maybe a little surly maybe a little grumpy out you Whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa Never No, okay, all right Well, I think maybe he just did want to disturb you with you know and a family setting it was like a no Yeah, I don't remember you telling this he told the story a few weeks. I don't forget it That day I tweeted out he just left such a nice note on my car Oh, you read it for those who who didn't Yeah, I mean some episodes sometimes do you remember it's hearing this story? No, buddy. I got fucking my musher brains in one out the other on this one So it said um wit I didn't want to come up to you with your son
When I was in the army I had a few hard years personal issues and a few soldiers Two of sides under my command that really shook me your show was the best part of my week for a while Made me feel connected to home. Thank you. You guys are more important than you will ever know best of In the USA water bottle in the back. What are the odd class? And then um are a meet them. That's awesome good guy. I bet Absolutely. Yeah, it was just wild that this you know, but two buddies behind actually a couple of Catholic memorial legends from back of the day A spale and Brenda can cannon and that they happen to be with this kid in the same box that that you know this kid who met you so Yes, so I went up there with them and just kind of shooting the breeze with some guys I hadn't seen but the funny thing is as you can see from the picture I was right behind all the you know G and murals and and ilio so there was no goals if the if the goals were if they had you know Four or five goals. I would have bombed down on the seas, but there was no Like chance to who gonna get six? Well, there was actually goals. You couldn't have gone down because then you'd be mushing it
It's almost like you were stuck in that beautiful box for a if your CM buddies that you hadn't seen weren't in a box would you have gone up and said hello Yeah, absolutely. I mean they ace was like hey, come on up. I sorry. Yeah, I mean I buddy. It was like I was going up There was no it was like there was a spread of shrimp cocktail. What's up? Is it like? Oh fuck we don't have seen what happens with this The ocean called George. Yeah No, it was just more you know a couple like I said a couple fellows and you know all time kind of flies But like I said I was literally right behind the guys they texted them and you know there was there was no danger unfortunately of Chasing goals, but it was a blast. Elio's such a good guy. It was uh, he's awesome In Boston and I don't know if you guys mentioned the guy getting hit in the head with the puck I was right on you guys. Yeah, okay. Yeah, Boston made a come we tweeted. Oh, yeah Like and we saw the highlight after one of the range of defense been just an awful like dump in flip to the zone Probably Schneider I don't sealed right into the crowd and doing because I was telling girls to score the the Florida game
And he reached out like to try to grab something and if they if it didn't hit this guy's head It definitely would have hit one of us because he was two rows in front of us But there was nobody sitting in the the the first row in front of us And then this guy like he was leaking two men like he had his hand out. It was like a couple of blood Oh, they walked them out. He come back with like a big old panda joint has had like a 1920s dentist style like you know big white bandage on his head someone bought him a beer and like They don't give him a stand at all. He won the fan of the game. So yeah, it was pretty wild the guys made the jumbals actually like They presented him on the jumbal charm with fan of the game. Yeah, well you know, they like they like oh fan a fan B fan See and yeah, he he okay. He won it. So yeah, I like that. It was great time. See I mean I was like all right I have the over in Florida, Carolina to what's the score? Uh zero zero And I mean so basically even even if I went back to see say literally I mean I've never seen a run-up play like that I mean the whole I'm sorry the half a period you missed the whole thing just stand there. So yeah, but I think there's ever been a period played without a whistle
I'd be curious to know the fewest amount of whistles in a whole period I bet there's been one without a whistle A period well the whistle No, I bet two rows and pop buddy first night of the year We just got a nine minute you don't think in the hundred and whatever years of the NHL There's never been one period without a whistle. I bet you jeez googling it right now. We're gonna find out a full period of hockey Has never been played in the NHL without a whistle. Yeah, that okay. What's the least amount of whistles? The longest recorded stretch of continuous play without stoppage or a whistle and NHL history is just under 14 and a half minutes That happened Washington capitals versus Pittsburgh penguins March 11th 2014 Wow, that would be sick watching those two teams going out at no whistle I we got it we got to get that period and we got to watch it 14 minutes is the right I was because I was curious because I mean nine minutes that's a long time I mean you saw the lines it of people waiting to get back to the seat that what were the shot totals like does it give you like the Oh
Picture the guy's head wrapped up after getting the puck in the dome with some whitey tighties on his head got a coat text on his friggin head It's a diaper Do we have the shots on goal that period like what was I wonder what the gameplay was like 2014 is that one said was like not injured Who don't ask yeah, oh shit, bro Well, I kind of would you guys not want to watch the period now? No, there was there was a game in 1944 that was a zero zero tie that they don't have the records for fully, but they say it took under two hours So they don't understand how that game could have been played with so many whistles So they think that that could be a candidate for a game without us. Yes, everyone had work after So I might be correct here. Good had make ball money work at overtime is a plumber half to the game Also to another thing at the game. I want to this young college girl I beg come over She's with her dad and she's like oh, I really I was hoping to run into tonight and she come over and honestly guys
It almost brought like tears to my eyes like she can moment said like she's in college now And she's in sports media and does podcasts and sports right and said like the total the only reason she took this like Lion is her major this career was because of spit and chicklets and she's followed us for years and just a very like very Touching moment. I took a picture a dad took a picture was like she had on my Instagram and just a real real nice kid And it was just yeah like to say we you know we with goofballs We have a lot of fun with this and it's always nice when people come over and and share these experiences and and what it's meant to them But this is yeah, it was just really the highlight of my night Obviously like yeah, just for this press that come over and fucking right there and express that so that was good stuff Through the open-and-night notes ESPN's opening with the Liam Neeson monologue unbelievable about the kids hop in the boards Yeah, I still can't do it, but either way. I enjoyed the hell out of it. Yeah, yeah, yeah, exactly buddy I got those bad boys shopping up. We'll get that get that later The tributes to Barry Melrose on ESPN and TNT last night. This great job once again. You guys are awesome per usual
So that was good stuff to see for Barry. I don't know if you guys saw Logan Thompson's new master wedding crashes one that was great I think it's gotta be the first time Christopher walk and has been on a mass But I do like how he he always says like DC like you know, the Washington DC not known for their their movies I guess but that is a watch it in DC movie. Yeah, that's right pretty good shit there Um, I caught a documentary while since last episode. I was on summit 72 Obviously as a Canadian boy, but you know, there's this 72 summit series Canada versus Russia They played eight games foreign Russia at foreign fuel the first foreign Canada, then they went to Russia Phenomenal man, it's such a great historical document You know, there's the epic you know philispisito speech that he gives and kind of rallies the whole country And then they you know go over to Moscow when three games in a row and Bobby Clark, you know breaks I think it was how I'm off's leg and it's a phenomenal documentary. What is that on history? Uh, it's various Oh, but you could probably find that on a show. Okay. If you go to actually great website just watch Dotcom. Yeah, you're punch of the name of a movie or show in a tajia where you can find that particular thing you'll look up for
Just watch dot com good stop there Uh, also I want to talk us uh sled hockey, you know, during the powerllympics Uh, there are a few retirements. I want to acknowledge these guys uh, gently. He was the goalie Uh, he went four goals in the powerllympics uh, five world gold medals as well Kevin McEw is a forward one four goals as well six world championships and uh Josh Paul's who I've chatted with a little bit over the Is he's the only five time uh powerllympic gold medalist in sled hockey history He's won seven gold at the world's do so just want to acknowledge those guys. We always acknowledge any child retirement So I figured these guys are worthy as well. Uh, good stuff there I'll wait did you happen to catch uh, virley into this last game with the tigers the other was incredible I mean just to get the his daughter comes out that's how he's leaving the game You could tell right away. So I broke down the I'm assuming it was a big surprise to him Fuck I kind of forgot um how dominant he was He was incredible to career he also told a cool story that At some point in his career he realized like I got to like stop throwing as hard as I can
And it was in like a particular game He was playing in a game where they had like no bullpen. He's like I had to get a long outing And I just started like taking a lot off my fastball and knowing that I'd be able to just turn it up if I had to And it like changes career in a way where he just started pitching like that like such good location Yeah, he was he was unreal man Unmelt player and he's with Kate Upton Yeah, two uh, two world series like how many time he must have been multiple time all star Oh, Saiyans probably started with a big up golf for them before he's a big big man Oh, is he oh, yeah, he's a big loss. Yeah, he's a hawk. He's got that big man bum chin Yeah, thank you manly bum chin They say about me man. I'm a dominant This it's a dominant but chin it is it is and it's called a clip chin. It's grown into it Yeah, a lot of people I know they say about baseball But how can you not be romantic about baseball when you see that clip you you understand, you know
What is that coming out to I thought and then sure sir sure sir wouldn't leave That was But yeah, yeah, the manager for Toronto come out. He basically you know kind of eff you to my don't know if he was serious Set the manager back to the to the dugout, but then you know He eventually was pulled from the game got the applause then he you know jump right into the crowd see his family So pretty cool send off a couple of legends in me the verlander in the In the ball pen was pretty Ridiculous too like just seeing all the fans surrounding him getting. Oh my god He came out like that was pretty cool too. So everything about it like I'm not a big baseball guy But two very very cool moments and now we're in the thick of things with the the baseball playoffs We got to see we got to see the fillies come back in that game Um against the braves last. Oh, yeah Harper Harper didn't catch that ball. I was like oh my god. He actually said something cool after really cool Donnie's asked about yeah, how like how do you kind of come back from making a mistake like that The cost your team the season. He's like I thought about what I would say to my my son if that had happened to him
And like how to approach it and that was pretty interesting never never had heard that but um That was awesome the red socks just truly pathetic. I think he's kid will be good at baseball I would think based on the fact that Bryce Harper I think he was in sports. Oh, he's like 15 years old of freak Couple time MVP. I believe but the red socks That was like that was that was the biggest joke I've ever seen They looked like a triple 18 they I I tune it out. We got on second base in the second game We finally got on second base and just an absolute drumming by the Yankees didn't even have Aaron judge I don't even think the Yankees are very good, but that came slitler guy But the crazy thing about the Yankees and for people who are into baseball. Is it named after Cam Deely? I Possibly, but he He's from wall pole, Massachusetts And then their other star Ben Rice is from cohasit, Massachusetts They both were Yankees fans growing up to the point where the broadcast is showing Ben right
I didn't know one kid who was a Yankees fan growing up and Ben Rice has pictures as like a five-year-old in a Yankees uniform It's like it was just meant to be and he played hockey and baseball at a local school here in nobles Then he went to Dartmouth. I he had to be a I'm sure he was always good, but that's number 22 for the Yankees The lefty. I don't know what number he is, but he just said bombs. He had 41 homers this year Played college baseball Dartmouth apparently during COVID. He started his own league so scouts could come and watch guy I don't know if it was just it was like a pickup league almost and that's how he got you got seen because Dartmouth I can't imagine is like ripping out MLB prospects. No, I don't I wouldn't think so. I wouldn't think so actually kid Matt Duffy that grew up in the house I live in now he played it Vermont and then he ended up at Tennessee. He played in the majors That's another school you go to Vermont. You don't Normally plan on playing major league baseball, but yeah, the Yankees two best players being from Massachusetts
Is kind of a kick in the deck, but that's slitlers a problem, man That guy's a that's a big horse. That's a big horse Do you think cuz they're so much younger than us like all we had growing up was you know Bruins redsocks Patriot you didn't have like the You know the NHL Packagers like these kids are so much younger than us that they had access to watch the Yankees The Yankees were obviously winning championship. So it's almost now like how kids from everywhere love crossbeer Love O Vetskin just cuz you have more access to watch these players. I don't know. I love the eyes, man He too. Are you gonna roof or anybody down the socks throat? Is there another team you gonna? No, no, no, what about you? No roof or I don't know. I don't want the dog. I don't want the dodges to it I wouldn't I wouldn't mind seeing the the brewers when yeah, I was thinking that also like the white socks That was the first like I think series that they won you know in 20 when he is when when they knocked out the cubs Cubs the other night was not the Astros the other night. So I don't know. I like to see you. He's a little weirdo I like that. I like to see white socks cubs go at it like it seems city comes comes or don't the way in the year
The Patriots podgers took the cops were a wagon I think they had a they had a couple 10 game winning streaks and then they just The dull part of the little bit. I just don't get the best of three. I'm I don't get the hard new in the wild. That's like I know they have change But now it's three out of five and then the championship series of beat of AL and I was four out of seven and world series four out of seven I don't get why they play the playoffs in October September October like it's freezing cold like shorten the season on I don't know like where you're playing it and That it's ending in September. I make the playoffs. You get the best of three all on the road. It's like what? That yeah that that I agree with it. I mean, I know the travel It wouldn't you gonna do go back to one city for game two and then back for a potential third game But also like I don't know man with white white. I can't one team get at least a one home game I don't understand that either but make it the best of five, but you just paid 162 games Give me a best of five for Fox six. Yeah, there's no way they're gonna reduce the schedule
Hey, congrats to my fellow townie here Maddie Grizzlyck on a selection to the BU athletic hall of fame Time with the Sabers right? Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah couple weeks back one year daily think about eight eight hundred and fifty gay But yeah, just another guy from the town was made a lot of us proud and you know like stuff We've have a great legacy at history a hockey here in Charleston So we're always proud of what grizzies done so congrats to to Grizz on great family. Yeah awesome Yeah, the old man still still over the boat gang, but don't have like 60 years. Oh, he's retired now. Is it always brothers there now? Yeah Oh, yeah, yeah, oh, I don't I thought I thought the old man was still hanging on just I think he just goes and hangs out sometimes He's out that little that little like cubby hole they have hidden oops. I didn't mean to play a secret guys All right boys last thing my classic recommendation for the week 1998 Rushmore from O'Westsey, Anderson. He had the Royal Town Bums ball rocket. He's had a bunch of movies This was the second movie he came out with Jason Schwartzman He plays a kid at like a prep school falls a false for one of his teachers build my week kind of has a little thing going with it too
They have the sort of a little competition going Awesome, Flex. This is sort of the movie that really put West Anderson on the map. I can't believe it's almost Frick at 20 is old. I mean, I'm an old bastard. It makes me feel old the same that but awesome movie absolutely hilarious It kind of sort of set the template for the type of movies that he would continue to make till this day. So check that out if you want to call the gunner Rushmore Yeah, awesome Flex really like funny as a bastard like I said, it's kind of he kind of has his own unique style And that was like sort of the first movie he made that you know sort of set that template. So yeah boys hockey's Top the rest of the day for you Um, let's say Thursday. I might usually meet up with my dooks She's usually in the stack of the woods on Thursdays. We go down a bruise fork Grab a pizza grab a little dinner and then uh, yeah strap on for some hockey back to the two tv system here Yeah, little pox later now. That's probably about about it for today The tan looks great Where'd you get that you go spray tanning? Guy come on. No, I don't know. Just uh, I don't even know where I came just being outside. Oh, but I
I took I took big bros. I grand I grabbed my key down so I'd grab his wedding hook He sent me a text last night. Go to picture. I guess I got a ticket for a speeding. I guess Rhode Island does those You know take a picture tickets was just kind of bullshit. I think you should have to be pulled over and for sure But because it was like my he's like oh dude you got run up to in 50 50-1 into 20. I was like Bro, Willis are right. No, let's I'm like where the fuck was there? Where's there at 20 mile an hour zone? I was in so I said, so be the whole thing but but it's right pulling up to the wedding when you relate He's like my car doesn't even go 51 Well that bad boy goes. Oh, it's funny tool in that car. It's like it looks like an old cop cop so when you're in like the file left lane Oh, people get the fuck out of the way. Oh, Amy if you get a panoras they think you're a cop so Yeah, I know maybe I'll file on a peel check look into that but I just yeah, I would love to see already in court Find this thing Give it to me now. What's it because well what's weird as they you know my brother's name obviously it's his god
His name's on the ticket. It's like but like that's not a an owner violation. It would be a driver violation That's where I think there's like a discrep like you know, I mean my brother. I mean I was driving the car my brother Yeah, I don't even have a driver's license. How can you get me a pick up a speed? Oh, I'm Fucking kid me, you're on it You're on it.
