This is the Sox Machine podcast with your hosts Jim Margulis and Josh Nelson. Hello folks. Welcome to the the after party as the Chicago White Sox just won game one of the American League

Division series. I'm Josh Nelson. This is the Sox Machine Bose Game Show presented by Aiken Law and of course part of the Foul Territory Network as we are streaming live from the Removate Theater. After the White Sox, just one three to nothing. The comments section you guys are already going crazy and it's just great to see and everybody is so excited after this huge win for the White Sox. It was one heck of a party here at the Removate Theater and Brian Brewin puts the best Grant Taylor. We're definitely going to be talking about Grant Taylor. What an amazing performance by Grant Taylor. And yeah, well said one down to go for the White Sox as they are now a three and a half to start this post season and just to catch up again the White Sox winning three to nothing and a fantastic job on the pitching front for the Chicago White Sox to only allow

three hits. It started with Hagen Smith in which Hagen Smith retired the first eight batters for the Chicago White Sox. He ended up losing his control and he walked three straight batters and we talked about that in the pre game show. That was a concern for Hagen Smith entering this game. But then we'll then a bowl after the bases were loaded went to Brian Hudson and Hudson was able to get that key out to get out of that jam the bases loaded jam for the guardians. And then Jordan Higgs came in and Higgs is just throwing heat. I think Statcast had him at 102 miles an hour for one of his fastballs. He did it and I'm walking a batter. So he only went two thirds of an inning. He did pick up two strikeouts before will Venable went to Anthony K to get out of another jam K the very first pitch that he threw he gave up a double to Travis Bessana. So he ended up getting himself out of the own his own jam that he created after that double.

But then K K's been very good against the guardians this year. He went one and a third inning just allowing the one hit to Bessana and then walking one batter. But then Grand Taylor and we'll talk more about him as Magi editor of socks machine Jim Margolis joins me in a moment just outstanding one of the best host season reliever performance is ever in white socks history. I'm not exactly sure. What would even beat this? I mean, four scoreless innings only two hits allowed did not walk a batter and struck out six and he did this on 42 pitches 42 pitches for Grand Taylor. That is just insane. And as Keith Flur puts it in the comment section, the white socks are basically operating with a 10 man bullpen and only two dedicated starters. Do they have to dedicate a starters right now?

And very well could just be one dedicated starter for the Chicago white socks and Sean Burke and then 11 other pitchers. But just a fantastic performance by Grant Taylor and the white socks pitching staff to only allow three hits to the Cleveland guardians today. And we did talk about the walks in the pregame show for the white socks as we knew that that was going to be a little bit of an issue in the past. It's been an issue for the white socks pitchers on typically they average about four walks a game today. They ended up walking five batters for Cleveland. So I'm sure that manager will vent a bull will stress that to the pitching staff that you have to be careful with the guardians of the walks. There's too many free passes. But the white socks only allowed three hits today to the Cleveland guardians. And when we take a look at the win probability graphic. You know, the guardians started really strong Parker, Mastic, give him a cap tip. He was really getting the white socks batters guessing the first three innings where he picked

up six strikeouts and five of those strikeouts were looking for the white socks. So there was a lot of guessing the first time and let's say like the second time to the order until Munitaka Murakami came up to bat. And that is our Fox one moment of the game. L will be on Fox's streaming on Fox one. The race to the world series has started. We have your front row seats of the wildest walk offs lights out pitching and clutch plays all season long. Homer. And in the first inning Miguel Vargas drew. I thought a pretty tough walk against Parker, Mastic to really drive up that pitch count. I had a meant 23 pitches for Mastic in the first inning. And that was a great job by Mutitaka Murakami to hit a single to center field to continue adding pressure to Mastic. So Mutitaka Murakami was ready to go against Mastic. And maybe it was one of the few white socks hitters that was ready to go to face the Cleveland Guardian starting pitcher. But then that second at bat what an absolute bomb for Mutitaka Murakami a 440 foot shot. This place behind me absolutely one crazy. I posted the reaction video on social media. We're getting a lot of feedback from Mutitaka Murakami's fans all the way out in Japan. They're very excited. And what a great moment for Murakami. That is now Murakami second home run against Parker, Mastic this season and was really

the driving factor for a lot of this game. And this is why home runs are so important in the post season because they can dramatically change the direction of a game because after that inning before then the guardians had the bases loaded. They had a great opportunity to bust the game open with a big two out hit, but they couldn't find the big two out hits today with runners in scoring position. That's going to be the thing for the guardians. They had good opportunities to score runs against the white socks, but they just could not capitalize. And then to turn around and have Murakami hit that absolute bomb of a home run. What a gut punch to the guardians, but what a huge boost for the Chicago white socks to take that lead. And it did appear at one point later in the game that Tommy fam was going to have a three run home. But that was a great deep. It's a play by and Helen Martinez at the wall to rob fam of extra base hits. So it really looked like that Murakami's home run was going to was going to be the deciding factor and it really ended up being because the white socks pitching was just absolutely fantastic.

But yeah, congrats to Murakami. His first MOB host season home run. I am sure and based on social media so many fans in Japan who have jumped on the white socks bandwagon are just ecstatic right now with that big moment. So congrats to Murakami for delivering today in game one for the Chicago white socks. The other big moment is Kyle Teals mad dashed home and what a what a daring sprint. So up to to nothing and take it a look again at the win probability calculator and with teal at first base after drawing a tough walk Colson Montgomery. I what do you want to call it gets one off the end of the bat and Hozier and Maris is not at his typical position at third base and Montgomery's double just trickles down the left field line and just keeps rolling which buys enough time with two outs for Kyle teal to make a mad dash and maybe it was too risky for Justin Jersley to send teal home

but it ended up being the right call even though the throw beat Kyle teal at the plate. Austin hedges could not hold on to the throw and teal was able to slide in safely for the third out for the third run a big run at it especially laid on because typically to feel more comfortable about how a team is standing. I always feel like if you can get the four runs and then it requires a grand slam then I start feeling okay. But with the white socks having a three run lead and getting deeper and deeper into the game. I just didn't know if the guardians really had enough offense today against the white socks pictures to make a comeback late. But that was the other big moment with Kyle teal scoring all the way from first base. We are going to take a quick break for a word from our sponsors but coming up next let's talk more about the white socks pitching and how he gets Smith's fair and of course let's all rave about Grant Taylor.

And you can visit the foul territory store at foul territory shop calm to pick up your new white sock shirts Sam Antonacci, Mootet Salkerberr, coming after his big home run today, Tristan Peters. And now they also have a new chase my draw the shirts after his big home run in the American League wild card against the Houston Astros. And of course, the white socks being celibate for Sean Burke. You can get this new shirt all in the foul territory shop officially licensed gear from the MOB players association. They also have socks machine gear too. So if you need a new socks machine shirt or coffee mug, you can visit the foul territory shop calm and again, the post game show continues white socks winning three to nothing getting six hits today and take it a look at the box score for the Chicago white socks. Mootet Salker, Mark Cami went two for four Miguel Vargas one one for two, but Miguel Vargas also drew two walks a great day at the plate for Miguel Vargas, especially after

he went 0 for nine against the Houston Astros Colson Montgomery had a great day at the plate. He won two for three with that RBI driving in Kyle teal all the way from first base. Kyle teal, Jura walk and he scored on that run. Houston Peters had a pinch hit base hit. He won one for two, pinch hitting for Randall Gritchick. We did not see Andrew Benatendi in today's game. Sam Antonachi came in late for Tommy fam and which Tommy fam had some some bad luck as he flew out to left field and that ended up being a two plan for Miguel Vargas as he got thrown at a first base again. It's true. If it's a play by Anne Helen Martinez for the guardians. The white socks went over four with runners in scoring position. So kind of a weird game with the guardians going over three. Neither team was able to get a base hit with runners in scoring position. But that's why the homeruns are important.

Maracami's two run homer being a big difference in the Kyle teal scored all the way from first base off Colson Montgomery and his double. Great to see Montgomery really picking up in this postseason getting those hits and try to gain more confidence at the plate. The white socks could definitely use that. But on the pitching front, what a fantastic pitching performance by the Chicago white socks. And I am curious to know like moving forward on how the white socks are going to be using Hagen Smith. Because I feel comfortable that he's good for 35 pitches in his outings. He retired the first eight batters. But it just seemed like when he got past pitch 35, he ended up losing his release point. He was having a difficult time as far as locating his fastballs, especially just was losing on both sides of the plate. And his slider can sometimes be a pitch that he can see all strikes early. But he really wants to use that diving below the strike zone to induce whips and get

those strikeouts. So when he had walking the bases loaded, that was kind of a bummer. And I was really worried of like, wow, what a great performance by Hagen. I hope this doesn't go sideways for him. But the white socks were able to get out of that jam. Same thing with Anthony K. I was a bit concerned about how Anthony K was throwing when he was first coming into the game. Again, he has made it known throughout the season. He really doesn't like the opener. He really wants that fresh starts to come out of the bullpen and start the game. So I think we're still learning what kind of reliever that Anthony K could possibly be during this post season. But he's had such great success against the guardians this season. So I'm sure we'll see him multiple times. I don't know if he will get a start again. We we choked about it. If you just joined us as again, I'm Josh Nelson of socks machine. We are streaming live from the Removent Theater for this post game show as the white socks won game one, three to nothing over the Cleveland Guardians. And with Anthony K be interesting to see what his usage is.

Again, he's had a lot of success and does will venable have confidence for him to go multiple innings. He didn't have a lot of confidence in Anthony K. At the end of the season to face a lineup at their time. So we'll see on his usage and with Grant Taylor. I don't know man, moving forward like what do you do? Like 42 pitches and four innings. That's awesome. Six strikeouts on 42 pitches. 34 of them were strikes. And I just loved the way that Taylor started each at bat with that awesome curveball that he was throwing and just deem strikes against the the Cleveland Guardians. Now it's a join me to provide his reaction to the game is socks machines. Imagine editor. It is Jim Margolis and Jim. Welcome to the post game show. As you just wrote the game recap for us over on socks machine.com. I already talked about the big place already. Murkami's big home run.

I want to ask you about Grant Taylor all these years of us covering the white socks. And again, you know, 13 seasons. This is really our first post season wins that we are enjoying here. The wild card series win and now the white socks winning game. One of this ALDS. I don't recall ever a dominant reliever performance like Grant Taylor in the post season for the white socks. There's been moments. You know, Bobby Janks has provided moments. We all remember L. Duke a getting out of that bases loaded. Nobody out jam in Boston. But Jim to go for innings today for Grant Taylor on 42 pitches, scoreless and six strikeouts. That is just pure dominance. Yeah, I mean, the white socks haven't had many post season wins. It's really treasured against just in general. Like that's a pretty narrow field. And yeah, just the way the white socks use pitchers, especially now, leaving so many innings

to cover and leaving a closer like Taylor to be able to cover for innings. That's kind of unprecedented with the way the white socks go about it. But yeah, Taylor really simplified the decision making it in the game. We talked before how, you know, would Taylor be able to go more than two? And I was kind of like, no, you know, not probably not going to burn them or really extend them that long for a longer series. But then you watched it unfold. And he made it look so simple that it seemed like Vennable would have been stupid to go to anybody else. You know, a career high for innings, but only 42 pitches. You need 54 to throw two and a third his last time out. So like 10 pitches, 10 pitches, 11 pitches, 11 pitches, he got whiffs on 12 of 23 swings, 7 of 9 on his curve ball. Like he was locating his curve ball. The fastball is more or less a show me pitch towards the end. And yeah, when it's that simple, I don't think you take it for granted. I think you're you write it out and Vennable had the right idea with having Sean Newcombe

warming, just standing in case Taylor hit a wall. They started making it difficult on him, but he didn't really throw one stressful pitch. I'm now that you mentioned like I'm trying to like cycle through. Yeah, he just he was really in command. And I don't know what Cleveland does. Like now you have it off day. This has got to be in the back of your mind, right? If you're the Cleveland hitting coach development staff, just trying to help these guys get prepared because it's like, do you really want to go after Grand Taylor's curve ball? Jim on the first pitch because it was very clear. That's what he wanted to use was to steal strike one against the Guardians batters is. Here's his 12 6 curve ball, but nobody really wants to go after that first pitch. So I'm curious on how the Guardians will counter Grand Taylor. If we see Grant Taylor in game two. Yeah, the the plate appearance. I'm looking it up right now to a Brian Roqueo in the seventh inning. That one made me laugh because it was after Patrick Bayley.

Yeah, it was after Patrick Bayley lit off with a single. And I think this is kind of where Taylor was just feeling it or from that point, it tilted in favor of like, oh, I know what I'm doing here because Roqueo for those who don't remember who have blacked it out. So he walked Taylor off twice on fastballs, two strike fasts or almost one oh fastball, the other one, or one fastball, the other one was a two strike fastball. And both times, you know, teal called for one high, trying to be a put away pitch and Roqueo just got on top of it. He was looking for fastball both times. So what happens here is you know, Patrick Bayley leads off with a single first lead off runner. Guardians have all day up comes Roqueo who has beat Taylor twice. Taylor throws him five breaking balls, like just does not give him once like Ron Darling at one point said like, oh, now's the time you set him up for the fastball. I know I was thinking and I saw in our first pitch thread that others were saying like, nope, no fastballs. Like there's, you know, Taylor was a or Darling was a little bit out of town foolish of just like,

you know, you don't know what happened. What's happened here with the with fastball usage against Roqueo? Don't throw one unless you absolutely have to. If you beat you on a breaking ball, then tip your cap. But nope, just kept feeding on sliders or curve balls until he swung over one of the dirt. And that was like at that point, you know, Stephen Kwan grounds into a double play. And then it's just super simple for Taylor after that. So I shared my reaction. And again, for those sort of joeined, I'm Josh Delston alongside Jim Margolis of Sox machine. This is our live pre post game show from the Remova theaters of White Sox one three to one. The first game of the ALDS Jim, this is obviously a huge win. Like when we made our predictions, I thought I picked white socks in four, but I thought they would lose today because Parker Messick has been really good for the Guardians and the Guardians have been two and two against the White Sox. And now this is five games that Parker Messick has started against the White Sox. The White Sox have not scored more than three runs in any of these games that Parker Messick has started against him.

But now the White Sox are three and two because the Guardians just have a terrible time providing run support to Parker Messick. So I view this as an absolute huge win. If you're a White Sox fan that's believing that there's divine intervention right now that with the Pope being on the White Sox side, I might be with you because what incredible way to start this post season, they get a little bit of offense, but today, the pitching, this is three games into the post season, Jim and the White Sox pitching have only allowed six runs so far. I was not expecting this from this team in the post season. Especially since they've had moments where they've looked flawed or mortal or like the usual selves like Hagen Smith, you're hitting the wall and the third inning with that kind of command laps we've seen of just him losing the building throw strikes. Anthony K taking a batter to get going and having to leave the bases loaded Jordan Hicks not being able to finish an inning when he looks like he's cruising like they had opportunities and the Guardians couldn't capitalize.

So and same thing with Houston too, just like they had moments where they wobbled, but just because of these early leads and like the White Sox haven't trailed yet three games in, which is pretty crazy. They have yet to trail in any playoff game. Yeah, while you know, kind of stitching together pitching plans as they go along. Another thing it's fascinating to me here is like the pitching has been effective, but also like the Guardian started Parker Messick and so they use more pictures in the White Sox didn't game one they use six pictures the White Sox use five. So, you know, that's one way to cut the legs out from under the idea that because of this starting pitching superiority that Cleveland has. I do think they have it. I don't think this game proves that they don't have it like Messick was tough. Mercami just got him good, but if you're able to get into the bullpen like that and then make a Stephen vote probably use more levers and he wants to or have to dance longer than he wants to try to figure out left right left right.

You know, over the course of ittings and ups and downs. You can make weird stuff happen and you know the White Sox probably thought they scored, you know, four insurance runs rather than the one they did with Tommy fam swing. But the fact that you know they had that misfortune with that double play and six inning and then they come back and you know still get around the seventh like they've been able to reclaim that momentum that you think they've lost same thing with like that my drawth homer of just like turning around like they found ways of the pitching being just good enough. Just tough enough when they have to be and then the offense coming back and and stiff arming whether it's Houston or Cleveland just to take away that second wind. So the big three for the White Sox Miguel Vargas, but it's a talk of Murkami and Colson Montgomery all had really good games at the plate. I shared what the moment of the game was earlier on the post game show and of course that was a talk of Murkami's to run Homer. I'm just loving the reactions and still continues to grow as I think people in Japan are either waking up or they're noticing what happened today with Murkami's big to run Homer to power the White Sox offense today.

One moment for Murkami and a fantastic way to start this ALDS for him because in his first two played appearances he picks up two bass hits. Yeah, that was I mean he had the two hardest hit balls of the game. The single was solid against the lefty especially like that's you know when trying to formulate a line against Parker messic and this could be instructive for when the White Sox face them again assuming they do is that you have been able to talk about how the platoon splits aren't normal for a messic that he actually is tougher against righties. And he's still bad at his share of righties like fam and Doyle and such but he was like it took some it was more than simple platooning it took some figuring in terms of like how swings work against against pitch shapes and things like that and the returns of what the White Sox lefties did and some of the ugly at bats like chase my draw had and Tommy fam had his first time up against messic might change the thinking a little bit in terms of how many lefties can go against messic next time.

He starts because we're a commie got two good swings and I'm one for a single center and then one for that just except really violent Homer to right field which is the always enjoyable in the postseason setting. It's just an absolute bomb. I first when he made contact him I thought it was going foul until then the camera pan and it's just like oh my gosh I almost had a chance to go up or decking Cleveland. Yeah like I thought it was foul to and I realized it's just because normally when you see like the ball leave the camera that quick it's usually because like it just took the short route like just yeah just immediately to right and like this is a case of nope it was just hit that hard. Yeah again awesome reaction here gutsy send by a third base coach just a jerseysly Jim to send Kyle teal. I don't know people are saying it's excuse me swing which maybe it was but Ramirez is not there in a great job ahead him by Colson Montgomery to get enough on it where it kept rolling down the left field line and it really paid off I mean if he just holds on to the ball I wonder if people would disagree with you Jim about sending teal at that moment.

No I think with my drawth coming up and you know he's facing a righty the odds of something wonky happening on that relay especially like coming off the sidewalk weird angle we're like not even really but just like to throw home from that behind the tarp on the you know left field wall like it was a bang bang play so if he's out of the bang bang play. The you know teal like I guess he's running well enough to leave no margin for error and the guardians and have any error I would take those odds or that probability better than my drawth coming up with a hit off a righty who's just coming into the game to face him. Yeah as we look at the win probability for those that are listening to the podcast win probability added Grant Taylor to talk about me Anthony K. I was K got out of a jam but you know the big moments again Merrick homie and his two run homer a rocio striking out in the fourth inning and Colson Montgomery is RBI double where the three big moments of today's game and what a day what a way for the white socks to start this man Jim is been a while since we have felt vibes this good the Chicago white socks are three and oh in the post season and now they have a win.

I don't want to lead they stole at least one game in Cleveland and for those that are watching live stream if you want to be part of the party on Monday Ramova is going to be hosting another watch party at this moment I'm just superstitious Jim I have to be here I don't know if I can go to any of the home games and the white socks continue to win because I'm just watching the games every mobile I'm just going to have to watch every game here until the white socks lose I guess. Yeah I'm looking up right now just to confirm my memory and just terms how like the games unfolded but you know white socks yeah they were they swept up five yeah well no in terms of like since then like the white socks haven't let a series they haven't really come close to leading a series since 2005 like you both the raise series and oh wait in the asteris and 21 I guess they led in 2020 they did lead that series but nobody is there to enjoy there was no crowd so that's why it's good case of like there was no excitement. It was no clin nobody's in the stands for that year so I it's hard to count that year but in terms of like ones where fans can actually gather and make noise and respond to a lead like the white socks lost convincingly against the raise the first two games for taking game three same thing the asteris with the Larry Garcia Homer 112 to six but like they were still down to nothing at the time still had a huge margin of clothes and couldn't do it so the fact that they you know one a series and are also leading a series here is the

is you know not unprecedented territory but for like the youngest generation of white socks fans who can go to bars and watch it they haven't seen the white socks lead a series in this kind of setting so yeah it's it feels you know you can say long series left still a lot of games play but also enjoy it like enjoy having a lead because it's not like that's that's one thing about like the white socks being house money is it's one thing for nobody expect this particular team to do it but also like their post season successes so scant that you can't take any post season win for granted you can't take a post season series win for granted even if it's a wild card series and you can't take a game one victory for granted because that's only happened one year basically so I was going to ask I believe Sean Burke is going to be starting game two has that been announced yet let me see if you start I know he's the bulk guy or like you expected to carry most things or pitch the most innings but let's see if they've announced that I mean it this isn't it's an absolute game you have to win for Cleveland I don't know like if you go down oh two at home I just don't know how Cleveland wins both games in Chicago I could be wrong like that is such a critical game and I wonder

how will Venable manages that game and just the mentality that Sean Burke will have going into that game because we joked about it earlier the white socks have one starting picture right now at 11 first but if the white socks have had success against Gavin Williams and if Sean Burke can be nails and are the white socks offense continues to find a way to beat Gavin Williams especially the second and third time through the order man it is this is exciting times I can't wait for Monday everybody enjoy your Sunday off we all deserve it enjoy the football I guess but come Monday afternoon white socks guardians game two that's going to be a great one Jim and yeah the vibes the vibes are amazing right now surrounding this team they're playing fantastic baseball well also thinking about Sean Burke the way you pitched in Houston and especially watching the ball try to carry the left couldn't carry the left the homers he gave up in Houston to the hitters he gave him up to do the guardians have those guys you know yeah that the homer gave it to Smith that was a that was a blast maybe Joe Adele hit something like that but I

would say that he shouldn't deviate too far from what he did in Houston in terms of beyond the attack make the guardians hit the ball out if they do then he tipper cap but unless they're just absolute mistakes or hangers but like just make them hurt you especially the white socks get a lead early just keep that same tack don't worry about three homers and four innings the Houston because it's two different teams Houston that's the one thing they could do and it served the purpose well enough with the white socks you know answering that with the my drawth homer but against guardians if they hit the ball out great but with a one game you know one o'lead in the series and with a facing lineup that has to stitch together plate appearances more or less you saw what the white socks they got in trouble because they walk guys so throw strikes if you give up three homers again then you can say wow the guardians hit three homers of the game and just leave it at that but make them prove they can do it first we'll be previewing that game on Monday afternoon leading up to the

first pitch again that will be on TBS and if you have HBO max on that app you can watch the game but Jim and I will be back on Monday to preview game two of the American League division series thank you guys so much for watching both our pregame and post game shows as we streamed live at the remover theater during their white socks watch party again the vibes are great the energy was awesome here today especially after the fourth inning when Murakami hit that home run and everyone is very excited right now on the south side and how can you not be what a great day for the Chicago white socks and the white socks fan base as they lead the American League division series one game to nothing but that will do it for this episode of the socks machine podcast thank you guys so much for watching the live stream if you didn't get a chance to watch the live stream you can watch all of our videos on our YouTube channel at youtube.com slash socks machine but if you got a drive somewhere on Sunday and you need something to listen to you can listen to the socks machine podcast recorded versions of these
