Sobers: The Legend Who Lit Up Cricket | Adelaide News

Sir Garfield Sobers, cricket’s ultimate all-rounder, died at 89, leaving behind a legacy of staggering stats and electrifying charisma. With 8,032 runs, 235 wickets, and 109 catches in 93 Tests, he was hailed as “five cricketers in one.” His 365 not out in 1958 shattered the world record and stood for decades. Arriving in South Australia at 25, he ignited local passion, even dining with Don Bradman. Known for his dazzling personality—“gambled, chased skirts, lit every scene with sunshine”—his inclusion defied the White Australia Policy. He led SA to two Sheffield Shield titles in 1963-64, outperforming every other Aussie player, and capped his season with a century and nine wickets in the final. Sobers didn’t just play—he transformed teams, injecting swagger and confidence that led to victory.
