September 11: When Ordinary People Stood Tall

Twenty-five years ago today, on September 11, 2001, the United States was changed forever.

In this special anniversary episode of The David Burnell Podcast, I reflect on where I was that day, what the attacks meant to me personally, and why the lessons of September 11 still matter a quarter century later.

This episode is not only about the destruction of the World Trade Center, the attack on the Pentagon, or the loss of Flight 93. It is about the men and women who stood tall when everything around them was falling apart.

I share the true stories of people like Rick Rescorla, who helped evacuate thousands from the South Tower before going back inside to search for others; Welles Crowther, the young man remembered as “the man in the red bandana,” who repeatedly led strangers to safety; and the passengers and crew of Flight 93, who understood what was happening and made the decision to fight back.

These were not people seeking recognition. They were ordinary people placed in extraordinary circumstances who chose duty, courage, sacrifice, and service to others.

September 11 showed us humanity at its worst, but it also revealed humanity at its very best.

As we mark the 25th anniversary of that terrible morning, this episode remembers those we lost, honors those who ran toward danger, and reminds us that courage is often found in a simple decision: when another human being needs help, you do not walk away.

We remember the fallen.

We honor those who stood tall.

And we carry forward the enduring hope that even in humanity’s darkest moments, the human spirit can rise from the wreckage, reach for someone else, and choose courage over fear.
