Sunday night football returns to up down. Sunday night football returns to uptown Charlotte. It's Panthers Lions on this crossover Thursday edition of Lockdown Panthers and Lockdown Lions. You are locked on NFL crossover part of the Lockdown podcast network. Four team every day. Welcome into another edition of the Lockdown Panthers and the Lockdown Lions podcast. We are a part of the Lockdown podcast network. And today's episode is brought to you by Fandall. Make this your most rewarding season ever with Fandall rewards club every week. Check out the Fandall app to see what's waiting for you. What's waiting for you on today's episode, of course, is the week for break down of the Carolina Panthers hosting the Detroit Lions on Sunday night football. The first time in 11 years Sunday night football is here in uptown Charlotte.

We will tell you the keys to victory. What each team must do to win this game. We'll look over the matchups that will potentially decide this matchup on Sunday. So Matt, let's start off with the biggest news coming out of Detroit and coming out of Carolina. Obviously, not great news to the Panthers as far as their injuries, which we'll get to in a moment in time. But Detroit coming off a hard fought one against the jets of all teams. One of the Lions looking out right now. What's a big storyline going to this game on Sunday night? I was going to talk to you, Julianna. This is the biggest thing with the Lions. It's simple. This is a two on one football team. I capital B here. Everybody is still talking about the secondary and the defense and how bad they have played especially on the back in the first three games. Now Dan Campbell has said he sees improvement. He saw improvement last week in the win over the Jets. And obviously the Lions defense made the play of the game to seal the game at the end of the contest with the Chuck Clark strip sack of Geno Smith. Yet you look at the numbers and you go, oh my gosh.

I mean, this secondary is allowed nearly 900 passing yards through the first three weeks. And with a fan base clamoring for a Joey Porter Jr. trade or something like that, Lions aren't going there yet. They're going to up kind of kind of raise up and elevate a guy like NS Raikstroy. He's going to play more again this week. And they're going to hope that the guys that they have internally can get better. But the biggest storyline is, yes, they're two on one. Yeah, the offensive scored 93 points, total the first three weeks. And they look good. And Jameer Gibbs is looks like it's good NFL players. There is yet how will the Lions be able to handle Bryce Young and and Macmillan and those guys on Sunday night? That's the biggest issue. I'm sure for Panther fans, it's somewhat refreshing to hear that other teams are also concerned about their defenses. As Troy, as you mentioned, have had their issues on the back end. And I started hosting locked on ACC at the beginning of August. My co-host, Kitten Gibbs, is from Detroit, Michigan, proud Lions fan. We'll talk every once in a while about the Lions.

And he was telling me after the game on Sunday against the Jets where, look, I mean, Geno Smith had his moments in time, but like, come on now. Geno spent the this stage of his career in 2026, be able to have those kind of games. He was talking about how he's hopeful that Aaron Glenn will, to part from his role, New York can go back to Detroit after this season. We'll see if that is going to be in the, you know, the wishes of Dan Campbell, if he is available after the year. And of course, plenty of time to get things figured out. But for Carolina, I'm bitching up top of the show. The injury bug is just killing this team. And it's not like it just began now. They got to training camp and found out that Taylor Moten had a blood clot and his lung, the starting right tackle, the last eight seasons here in Carolina. He is still working his way back. Iki Kwanu ruptured his batteler, Tendon, and that playoff lost back in January against the Rams. He is still working his way back. Now, the Panthers on Wednesday, today as we record this, they put both their starting corner backs in JC Horn and Mike Jackson on injured reserve. So they're out a minimum for games. But Dave can also telling us on Wednesday that the timeline is about eight weeks ish for

both of those guys, which means that they're either back Monday night football week 12 at Tampa or week 13 at Minnesota. So you're looking at your top two corners, being out for at least half the season, which is not ideal for Carolina and key matchups. We'll talk about the secondary when we get to those after our pause here. In a few moments, the left guard Damien Lewis, who's very clearly the best offensive lineman here in Carolina, he is not going to play on Sunday of an elbow injury. Now I did as Dave could potentially be back for week six as reporting was out there that he would only miss potentially one week. He did say it's possible that D lose out there for the week six. I feel it outfield, but that will not help them on Sunday night. They're right tackle Monroe Freeling, the rookie out of Georgia. He's in a concussion protocol. They're hopeful. He'll practice on Thursday, but that's up in the air. He's still in cocker, the young wide receiver, moved around pretty well at practice on a Wednesday, but they're not sure whether he'll play on Sunday in Xavier look at. He's also week to week. So yeah, not great vibes. Andrew wise for Carolina and trying to field a competent roster that can win this game

potentially on Sunday night against Detroit. I'll say this though, Julian, this it sounds like we're going to get a lot of rain in Charlotte. This could just turn into one of these really strange muddy games where a couple of loose balls and a couple of fumbles in a wet condition game decides it, which I think is advantage Carolina here because I think the Lions look at this and go, all right, we can play better. We're good on the road. We have shown on Sunday night football, whether it was at Kansas City, at Baltimore, at Houston over the last couple of years, the Lions have played under the big lights on the road. If the weather is a factor and it turns into just like a mud bowl and a rain game, who knows you throw everything out here with the injuries and just someone slips and falls and, you know, receivers open and that could be the difference in the game. That's a good point. And you know, I guess credit to the Panther's owner, David Sapper, who like most of the owners in his league are too cheap to have a grass field. So don't have to worry about mud on Sunday night, but looking at the weather channel, 67

is the high with an 83% chance of rain on Sunday. So great to have Sunday night football back and uptown, but probably not the best far as the injuries. And of course, people having to bring out the black ponchos as they're going to have a blackout for this game on Sunday here. And Carolina, I would say too, man, the Panther's going to last week. They were tops in the league in takeaways. Now that was extremely skewed by the fact that they played Cooper Rush in Jack Strand at quarterback, Guent Atlanta, a couple weeks ago in week two last week, did not get a takeaway when playing against Cleveland. I have not looked at the takeaway numbers, but I imagine they're still probably in the top five of the league after these first three weeks of the season. So that could be in their advantage as far as they've been able to do that so far. But as far as run the football, that's not been effective for this team. So that will be an area that they have to get cleaned up and addressed that they're going to have success and try to take some pressure off the price, young, especially if it's going to be in adverse conditions on Sunday night here in Charlotte. So Panthers, deal with injuries, lions trying to figure out their defense, whether it could be a factor.

What about the matchups that could decide this contest on Sunday night? We'll tell you those here in just a moment on locked on Panthers and locked on lions. Welcome to your most rewarding NFL season ever only on Fandall. How rewarding are we talking more rewarding than a touchdown with time expiring more rewarding than an 18 point comeback? We even more rewarding than an old lineman catching a touchdown. Everybody loves a thick six maybe your alliance fan. I certainly can't be more rewarding than going to a Super Bowl or for Carolina. Can't be more rewarding than actually having your starting players be healthy for once. And a while this season, Fandall is making the excitement go beyond what's happening on the field. Back here on this crossover Thursday edition of a locked on panthers and locked on lions he is Matt dairy of a locked on lions and of course Julian council of locked on panthers don't think I introduced myself at top of the show so my bad for the audio listeners. All right Matt. Let's talk about the key matchups on Sunday the weather as you mentioned could be a factor injuries certainly will be a factor for Carolina when you're looking at the lions defense versus the panthers offense what stands out to you as far as that matchup. Well here's where I'm going to go with something here I'm going to do something a little bit different Julie and I love what you're saying here. Okay remember remember something that Detroit lions passed up Monroe Freeling to take Blake

Miller and took him obviously in the in the first round at 17 and Freeling went two picks later so what should be interesting is how these two guys play because I do believe that the lions did have some interest in Freeling and liked him you mentioned before about the concussion protocol look I hope he plays and I hope he's out there if Freeling at any point is going to have to check eight and Hutchinson and block him that could be a long night for him although Hutch mostly lines up against the left tackle but we need to see just how those two first round tackles go at it and how they play obviously not against each other all right I'm not Taylor Swift here on the new heights podcast not knowing that Travis and Jason Kelsey used to go at each other at the same time but you see what my point is I'll be interested in watching how both those guys play and and if Freeling steps up and has a big game against the team that that kind of entertained him talked to him but ended up passing him to take the other guy instead out of Clemson was that based off of Miller's experience more so than anything you think at least from my head I just think

he fit the lie yeah I just think he fit the lion's culture he played every game he never missed a single snap of Clemson just a warrior and a guy that played four years I think that was definitely definitely something that was appealing to Brad Holmes what about you what are you looking at in terms of like you said lion's offense or lion's defense against that Carolina offense and brace young yeah it's interesting to before the closest out that you talk about just to kind of what ifs had they taken Detroit had taken Monroe Freeling maybe Blake Miller comes to Carolina the panthers have never drafted a Clemson tiger despite playing their first ever season down there memorial stadium in Clemson South Carolina another what if as far as the offensive line goes is Penae Sule had he not gone to Detroit right ahead of Carolina back in 2021 maybe Carolina takes him I know I was saying at the time a drap Penae Sule there should be a right outside the stadium considering how poor the offensive line was since crew Jordan Grocer had retired especially that left tackle spot but looking at the panthers offense versus the lion's defense I'm looking at the offensive line versus that pass rush they're definitely going to be without left guard Damien Lewis as I mentioned in that first segment

they possibly are going to be down Monroe Freeling that means that Corey Bullock a player that they brought off of the waiver wire after initial roster cut down last month in August he would be the starter at left guard and then probably Stone 4 side who was a starting left tackle last year for the Raiders had not equit themself well in those starts last season for Las Vegas he would be the starting right tackle not ideal for Carolina and like diving into some of the numbers for Detroit Alimic Nile who's coming back to the Carolina's played his ball at NC State he and Skyler Gil Howard the rookie at a Texas Tech are both in ESPN's top 20 of pass rush win rate among defensive tackles while Damien Lewis who's not going to play in this game was top 11 as far as offensive guards pass block win rate so the panthers can be missing their top offense alignment and he look at a guy like Aiden Hutchinson at least according to the pf stats he's third in the NFL with 21 pressures while McNeil is 12th in the league and weather-freeling players not you'd talk about Hutchinson being lined up against the left tackle Rashid Walker corner pf ff has allowed

13 pressures so far this season that is only behind Monroe Freeling who's allowed 14 according to the pf ff numbers so that is a concern and our old friend DJ one of them apparently off to a decent start there in Detroit as well has two sacks after only having three in 16 games played last year in Carolina so yeah that's a big concern for me that match up between a Carolina panthers offensive line in line pass rush especially not having Damien Lewis what else stands out to you on Sunday night as far as matches between Carolina and Detroit well look and I mentioned the other day on my show you know Tetmick millen is not gotten going yet fantasy owners including yours truly know this and is this the game he gets right and and gets loose because in week one chrysalave had a big game week two Dalton concade was in the lion's secondary all day and free and then the week three Garrett Wilson eight I mean 10 catches over a hundred yards so is this the game where Bryce and and Macmillan kind of get it together here and put up some decent numbers I

mean obviously you guys put a video game type numbers and that bears loss in week one but you see the improvement of Bryce I see it and that's my that's a concern is is certainly DJ Reed I think would be on Macmillan and will he get some help how much man will they play you saw the browns and what they did this past week to kind of bottle up the panthers offense to an extent I think that's something to watch yeah and I give back to week one for team act he did not get a target in the first four drives of that game offensively which would have been shocking like something you would not have expected and was shocking watching it but Jalen coaker had a big day Jalen coaker may not play in this game and we did see Tetmick millen play really well week two against Atlanta have a breakout performance for this season and then last week only two receptions for I think 19 yards in that lost concie but now dince award is good but he should not be that goods where you're not able to do anything in that game now Bryce Young was pressured on 56% of his drop acts and maybe he didn't see t-mac when he was open certain situations I understand all of that but still if

you're going to be at the top tier receiver that everyone saw you be last year as he rookie of the year offensively you got to show up every week so carolana is not going to have jail and coaker they got the lean on guys obviously t-mac but guys like Bryson Tremayne who had a nice game last week John matchy Bryce Young's old teammate from alobama who's here for his first year in carolana david Moore resigned from the practice squad to the actor broscher which is not going to excite any panthers fan out there yeah you need your top receiver to step up I too am concerned about the lions wide receivers as james and Williams I'm on Ross St Brown especially I'm a Ross St Brown really good players they're going to be going up against two young corners or really one young corner another corner has been the league for a couple years but has not really been a starter and will leave the second the blanket as they knew him back in juco and can't just in when he was at text aid in the last two years he's going to make his first career start on sunday night in place of the injured jacy horn and my jackson then a kale of ebbins who made one start here in carolana at the end of the 2024 season against Atlanta he's also going to be starting at corner it's not

a great situation for carolana I was looking at the roster car today at practice and I was just having to talk to algs at low the short observer panthers be reported me like hey just I want to make sure I'm not getting as wrong there's only three corners on the active roster right now for carolana and that's the number as of this recording on Wednesday evening three corners now there's guys they can bring up like the vante smith and undrafted for agent out of Notre Dame is more of a slot guy they certainly probably bring up Corey Thornton who was with them last year who actually ended up being there starting nickel for a couple weeks before he broke his leg on Monday night against every school this season ago they brought back Robert Rochelle who's more of a special teams guy who Dave can now just mention on Wednesday they could potentially bring him up they can get him turn around at time to at least help out on special teams because a kale of ebbins plays a lot of special teams will he plays a lot of special teams you don't want these guys having to do double duty especially against james and williams and al marrassay proud so that is a serious concern of mine for carolana going to this game on sunday night yeah and the lion's offense like I said 31 points in in three straight games over 30 in the first three of a season for the first time

ever and it's a damn good offense led by drew pet sings the new o c now after last year's disaster after ben johnson left but a guy like amana rassay and brown really didn't get going last week at all and had an off game so I expect him this week to kind of get going again when they're on the road a hostile environment if it's raining that's kind of a gauf security blanket with amana rod also think too with the unsettling the corners and all the injuries you know that that makes the safeties feel like they've got to push back and and maybe take away you know the boundary a little bit more and that opens up things for sam laporta so I would anticipate that the lion's tight end is is is free a few times in this game and jared goff finds him and if and you know this julie and watching the lions for years like I have you give goff time he's he's going to pick you apart and he's been off to a really nice start again this year yeah and bring it up sam laporta is a big one too because the panthers have struggled inside ends in recent years you look at the game against cleven on sunday herald fan and junior had two touch star receptions in that game I brought

it up last week when speaking a spencer german from lock down browns watch out for that matchup so that's what to look out for and at least the cure on his credit they do had depth at safety they miss nicks got their starter at free safety last two weeks but zaki weatley they're rookie at a pinstate and in lathe and rancid and second round their second year plan ohio state of both come in and held up pretty well scott should be back but not having horn and be able to move him around will make this a far more vanilla look in the secondary which is a big piece of a jaro bear the defensive coordinator scheme here in carolina so we mentioned the sea how they're able to panel not having their top two corners and how they're able to try to address and disguise some of the obvious concerns there on that side of the ball for the panthers defensively are we told you the big storylines told you the matchups that we're looking out for what must each team do to win this game on sunday night we'll tell you that here in just a moment on this lock on NFL crossover Thursday edition of lock down panthers and lock down lines football is finally back and that means sundays are

about to get a whole lot more interesting every week brings new matchups break out players big performances and plenty of storylines to follow and if you like getting even more engaged with players and statue watching there's a new way to make game day more exciting price fixes bringing out its best offer yet for kickoff new users who sign up get one hundred and fifty dollars in line up if they win their first five dollar lineup and price fixes now available nation wide with price picture building daily fantasy lines by choosing two to six players and select the more or less under projected stats like passing yards rushing yards for fantasy score I've got my eyes guys on Ajmer gifts here in Carolina I've seen that he's been doing a great job there in Detroit as someone who ever really big season if the opportunity is there I want to see how his number stack up week the week and that's why I like using price fix to follow their player projections down to the app today and use code locked on in FL see it one hundred and fifty dollars instantly in line up if you win your first five dollar lineup price fix run your game a quiz on your phone and a box at your door

here with you looking at fandal sports book it's kind of surprising to me I get you get three points at home as being the home team which Caroline is getting but they are right now a three and a half point underdog at home against the lions and that's a a little bit close serve a line that I would expect to have seen at this point time in the week but again injury reports just came out a few I mean not even an hour ago as when we're looking at recording the show right now on Wednesday evening so let the wait and see how that line potentially moved especially on Friday once we get the injury designation see who's in who's out for this game and then as things progressed throughout the weekend but looking at this match I would think probably from your perspective that you expect the lions to win and honestly with the panthers injuries that they have right now the lions probably should win this game what do the lions need to do to ensure that they come to Carolina and win say what Julian I think the way the Carolina panthers win this game is if they win the turnover battle if the lions go on the road in rainy conditions and drop the football all over all over

the yard and throw it to the other team which occasionally happens the lions have been pretty turnover free so far this year goff has not thrown an interception yet there's been some fumbles and stuff but that's how I see Carolina winning this thing and the lions losing it is just losing the take away the giveaway take away battle lions have to take care of the football if they run the ball with your mere Gibbs and now they're second running back in the Cione Vockeys getting more carries as the weeks go on and just handle the football play you know some ground and pound get get some touchdowns in there maybe a Jake Bates field goal or two I think that's how the lions are going to win but I think really you know a key for them is to handle the football in these conditions if it's raining and don't give the panthers a short field and a chance here with this bang up roster is staying the game yeah and think Carolina at least the first two weeks did a really good job as far as sudden change and actually cashing in those fumbles into touchdowns week one Bobby O'Carrikay got a punch out Carolina scored seven points immediately week two zaki Wheatley the rookie

safety on his first NFL defensive snap ever is able to punch out of Cooper Raj today turn it into a touchdown last week didn't do it they had a fumble on that opening kickoff at the third quarter they kicked the fuel goal so Carolina's got to find a way to finish drives their endosituations but if they're able to drop back and pass the ball which I think they need to be able to do in order to win this game they've got to protect Bryce Young so far through the first three weeks of the season he's been pressured 62 times which according to pff is the most among quarterbacks in the NFL this season that's not going to get the job done and not having a guy like Damien Loes who is your best offensive lineman and the interior there that is a problem whether you have Monroe Freeling or Stoneforstight whoever's playing right tackle they've got to be better than what we've seen the first three weeks here in Carolina and you want to also take pressure off Bryce Young yes you want to build a dropback and throw the ball because that's what you've been doing successfully but you got to find a way to run the football like that has been an issue I had somebody ask me is if the players is the scheme is it the offensive line I don't know man feels like all the above because going back to week 10 of last year Carolina's been one of the worst rushing offences in the

league and you look at the first half of last season when Rico Dotto was set in the world on fire which he's not doing right now in Pittsburgh so you can't say oh well they had Rico things will be better he's injured understand all of that but probably not because they had Rico in a second half a year and what did Rico do but they've got to find a way to get back to running the ball and not just relying on the quarterback because obviously taking that leap to be what carries them weekend and week out but if Bryce is going to be an elite quarterback then you're going to sometimes at the carrier team and then you look at Demir Gibbs and I already talked about James and Williams on my Rossane Brown San LaPorta you've got to be able to contain Jemir Gibbs because he's one of the best peer playmakers in the NFL you saw it when it looked like the Lions were going to go to overtime against a Jets last Sunday Jemir Gibbs said no I'm good here I got I got dinner plans let's get out of here and win this game boy so that's one to look out for as well caramel I was going to find a way to win this game yeah Jemir is special and the Lions are finding a way to get him the football and again like we said in some tough conditions if that's the case on Sunday with the forecast you know Gibbs making a couple people miss in wet weather good night I mean he

is just that explosive and that good and you mentioned before something that was a key when the Lions have blitzed they've it's it's been hit or miss it's been Feast or Famine obviously it worked on that last play against the Jets to win the game but I think this is a game especially without banged up the Panthers O'Line is if the Lions can just rush four and get their four guys you much in one of them and Hutchinson certainly Ty Lee Williams and and Lee McNeil if those guys can get loose and and get in that backfield without having to blitz that will help the banged up secondary that of course is still without Brian Branch and Kirby Joseph on that back end settle in a little bit so that they don't have to do that for for if the front four can just get home I think it'll be a long night for for the Panthers and and I think that would be a key for the for the Lions is to get a win would be just Russian foreign being able to play a play some base defense to be okay I will freely admit Matt I'm a coward when it comes to predictions I don't need panther fans yelling at me for another thing but do you have any prediction on this game on Sunday or do you wait until Friday or you

just not doing it all I don't know you and I are having some fun here on a cross over Thursday I think the Lions will win I think they're due to play well let's be honest here they're two and one but hung out for dear life against the Saints and I'm well aware the Ross Jackson's club had some very good success the next week against Baltimore I understand that the Thursday night game against Buffalo that everybody I'm sure watched the Lions were atrocious yet put up 31 points it made it respectable at the end in this past week again 14 point lead against the Jets nine minutes ago they coughed that up and New York ties it and here's a Jets team without Breeze Hall without two there top three receivers and without their number one tight end and they they made it interesting so I think the Lions are due to play a more complete game go in there get a road win something like 31 23 and come home three and one yeah and look you could have just stopped at it's the Jets like that's why it should have never been a game but of course it was not this better yeah sure sure it's still New York and I'm just I can't give them respect um but yeah they

they're better certainly I'll be happy because this feels again that the Lions should win I just look at everything that's going on Carolina you look at Detroit where their roster is at what they have offensively they should win the game but I am very curious once we get the game designations if Jalen Kocher can play in this game and he's not compromised he's got a quad he's got a ankle he's been dealing with the last couple of weeks if he can be a factor for them along with McMillan and those tight ends Darren Waller he's come in he had a vet rest day on Wednesday and he's got a toe issue as well but they had some serious production on Sunday and that lost Constroy or sorry it's Cleveland rather um and this has been a tight in room since 2020 release since Greg Olson left that's been the lowest producing tight in room in the national football league but they're going to get something at a Darren Waller and Tommy Trimble and even Mitchell Evans that can help supplement what they're going to lose potentially in Kocher like that's the path now I'm glad you still may have the weather that will be an impact maybe they finally figure out how to run the ball they found some sort of you know thing in their scheme that's going to clean things up and be able to open up some holes for Hubbard or maybe they see something with Detroit it's certainly possible it's

the NFL we have seen teams look down and out and rise up and find a way to get it done they got a buy week next week so that's certainly well time for Carolina early on this season and they can get it done it just feels like this is the game that Detroit probably should win um but what the wait and see because I would not be surprised by either result that could happen on Sunday and that's just the NFL if we're all being honest here um anything else you want to add before you I sign up here no Julian looking forward to this game I love that the Panthers are getting a Sunday night game you guys deserve it based off of last year and I do like your coach I wish you were healthier um the Lions have been the team that for the last two years has not been healthy and it's had so many injuries on defense so now you know both starting safeties off the Lions both starting safeties out or both starting corners off the Panthers it's kind of evens out a little bit but looking forward to it yeah and this is the game I've been excited about since I've seen a schedule come out being from the City of Charlotte having attended Monday night games on a night games and gotten to cover the playoff game last year certainly blessed enough appreciative of all the folks out there who follow the show to be able to have the opportunity to be there in a stadium on the
