All right, all right. It's a beautiful day for football here at the stadium and we're just about ready for kickoff score 0-0 and suddenly I'm in the mood for a Coke zero sugar Real Coke taste zero sugar. Now that's a winning combo Yeah, Chris refreshing that it's the spot When it comes to great taste Coke zero sugar is always on the scoreboard Coke zero sugar real coke taste zero sugar Hey, did you see that game last week? It was crazy actually we were there wait like in person. How'd you swing that? A legion had a super affordable non-stop flight out there with how low the airfare was buying tickets to the game was a no-brainer Homema beer. I'm going to a legion dot com right now a legion the official airline of the Las Vegas Raiders Non-stop flights from Las Vegas to Santa Maria, California one way for as low as $44 must be purchased by 10 to all 20 25 for trouble between 19, 20, 25 and 5, 17, 20, 26 seats and they to limited restrictions applies the legion dot com for details
I take a lot of pride in being a part of Raider Nation, right? I played here. I had my hand in the dirt I've a blood for it. I've sacrificed. I've taught the next Generation of great Raiders. I just want to keep having an impact right? I just want to keep having an impact impacting these guys working with these guys getting them better I'm excited man Raider Nation. I'll do whatever I can to help this team win from here until the day I die What's up Raider Nation? We are here and I'm your host and I have another special guest. We have a legend the legacy Ladies and gentlemen the nation give it up for RTA Godmean Ha ha ha Let's go man. Good to be with you my man. Good. Thank you man. Thank you. Oh, this is so awesome Have you hear me? You know welcome to the show. How's it feel? Been home. It's good man. It's awesome. I always love coming back the alumni department is so good here
So I came back up a couple weeks ago got to hang out at training camp see all the boys and It's special man. It's so nice the organization does this for us because I still feel like I'm a player I still have access to the team. I can still come watch practice It's awesome to represent the Raiders and come to the alumni weekend and do all these sorts of events So I love it man. I love being a Raider. I love that they treat us so well. What is that like what is is that feeling the style Jake? Yeah, do you start thinking about your oh Lime and teammates and and line and a love what is that feeling? Yeah, you know, it's it's it's great because I finished in Las Vegas I'm a West Coast guy living in Scottsdale. So it's great that I could just come back and forth and when I come in this building I just think about all the hard work we put in and and the grind and the camaraderie and the brotherhood and the best part about coming back is There's some guy still on the team that I played with Colton Miller Max Crosby The punter. What's his name? Well, we don't remember kickers names But AJ he's my guy. I will be
I'm a But out you know, but yeah, it's it's always so great to come back It's always some great like it's come back for training camp and getting to be on the field with the guys and then work with them afterwards It's it's awesome. It's a special opportunity talk about you know, just the transition from player to media Like does it does it make it harder to watch you know games as a former player in media? Yeah, you know, yeah, no the media do media stuff Is is a lot of fun right like I feel most at home just talking ball breaking things down Telling people how I see the game you know as an offensive lineman. You're correct We're the most important guys on the on the field we come up to the line of scrimmage and it starts with the center He's out there pointing things out We set the table for the rest of the offense and we go so doing media work I get to share my passion for just talking ball You know especially staying close to the Raiders trying to try to cover them and give the fans my angle and You know the transition. It's it's been great. It's been it's been fun
I've done a ton of media training when I was in the NFL I used all the NFL programs to kind of get myself ready and so it's been a ton of fun to kind of do my own thing and talk ball with Everybody and then the hard part you know the hard part is not playing anymore Yeah, and when I retired, you know, you go back and forth about that You know I played this game every day of my life since I'm 12 years old and that's whether it's in the weight room training out There on the field grinding so when I come back and I look at the game now. I'm like man. I'm glad I'm done I'm done because I know I know the work and the preparation and you know you know the grind right the grind never stops It's all the stuff that the fans don't see right those long off-season workouts You know those two a day workouts when I'm doing a workout Pilates getting stretched getting the IV getting a massage You know there's so much that goes into so much so yeah, I feel like I feel like when I retired the fight Slowly left the body and now I can look back on it. It's like man I played football for so long. It's so nice to just sit back and let the next generation run with it walk me through
Becoming a raider. Yeah, well, is that experience like And then any fun stories where you knew like okay, this is different Yeah, for sure I think I think I was destined to be a raider like I wish I would have played with the raiders my entire career Because I'm just that type of guy right like tough rough around the edges, you know But the definition of a raider to me is is just toughness right mental toughness physical toughness You know, it's it's been a long long journey in my career to kind of get to the raiders and I had retired I had taken some time off I had taken 2018 off I came up I did a a workout for the raiders It was supposed to be super secretive and all this stuff. I walk out on the field. There's media there and The entire organizations there Mike Mayock John grew me entire organization and they set up this workout for me I had done some research Tom cable does like some crazy workouts that was the offensive line coach Like puts guys through an hour process out there. They set up four cones I came in on in great shape. They were like back pedal crossover do this go that boom boom boom
And they had the whole field set up with all these drills. I went once around the cones I went back and everybody was like all right. Let's do it He's still got it. He can still move so yeah, so like being a raider. It's it's just been awesome It's just clicked, you know, I just I take a lot of pride in being around the guys and I got there in 19 when Max was a rookie Colt was a rookie, you know, we had a bunch of great rookies It was so important for me to like show these guys how to work hard how to take care of their bodies How to do all the right things how to really become a pro? It's really awesome You know, I mean because I feel like I had a hand in their development Absolutely, and now these guys are running with it. I'm just I'm so happy for their success It's like a little bros like we're my guy when you get a rookie. Oh, you love a rookie. Yeah, they're great It's like it's like you got a little brother for life It's really talked to me more about you know this life after walk me through like the style the approach yeah And you know, what's that looking like now, you know going forward for you on the media? So yeah, the media side's been fun
It's something that I've always thought about doing because I just feel natural on camera I feel I feel natural conveying my thoughts. I think I speak in sound bites So I did all the training with the NFL, you know the broadcast boot camp whatever whatever kind of they were doing and they were offering I took advantage of it and I was like man, I really love this so when I was playing I was doing NFL network I was doing Fox. I was you know planning the seeds so that when I got done playing that I could naturally transition into that role So I was prepared for it and then once I retired COVID kind of changed the game right like Going for those those couple spots on the NFL network going for those couple spots on Fox Kind of transformed into you can do your own thing now You can have a camera set up get your boys together do a show talk ball So that's where the dynamic shifted for me. I retired and I played golf every day for about five years Traveled played golf just hung out, you know kind of decompressed from football and then my media journey started last year
I jump back into it and I love it You know my my take and my my view of the game is is is very unique to me and I understand that Everybody views the game through a different lens. So I'm trying to speak to everybody I'm trying to speak to the first time fans I'm trying to speak to the fans that know every little detail about every team So the most challenging thing right now for me is it's learning all 32 teams It's being a professional speaking about all 32 teams and I have my media guides I built out I have all this stuff that I built out I just want to sound knowledgeable where I'm talking about your favorite team I want to sound like I know what I'm talking about. So that's what's really hard right now. It's it's Starting all the teams keeping up with all the news Figuring out what news is worthy that I want to pass along to my fans And so that whole process has been a blast It's just been a blast to kind of see how these shows run and and what goes into it and it sounds like The preparation for media is the same preparation that you had, you know when when you're in the
Maliaman room. Yes, right Talk about that camaraderie that brotherhood And what it takes right to really be able to have you know like a unit right To be able to have a unit commanding unit, but also build that what does that camaraderie and that brotherhood feels like yeah When the chemistry is you know down in yeah, you know for the offensive line a word that gets thrown a lot around in sports This culture, but for the offensive line. It's it's its own unique little culture right we got We got five guys up front that are shart and we got three guys behind us that are ready to go in at the drop of a hat and Then you got like your practice squad guys So it's it's up to the veteran players up to the big dogs in the room, right? You always have one or two Colton's the guy right now. Mm-hmm back when I played we had me We had Rodney Hudson. We had Gabe Jackson like we had real leadership and so you're just trying to get all those guys Those 10 to 12 guys to keep coming together Fighting for each other because the most the most important and the most motivating factor
For me and for what I try and impress upon my offensive line is we're out there fighting for each other There's nobody else out there those coaches can't cross that line and come out there fans can't come out there You can't bring your family. You can't bring that big signing bonus. Mm-hmm when you step out there It's us versus everybody. Yeah, and you got to play you got to protect your brother You got to play hard for your brother. You got a work hard for your brother You got a you got to give it up for me in the weight room You got to give it up for me if your body's messed up. I better see you in that training room Yeah, I better see you doing extra And when you build that culture that's where the camaraderie just kind of you know Hey, we're all holding each other accountable. We're all gonna work hard You know you start building that you lay the foundation and then you take it to the next level I was always big on we got to spend a lot of time together outside the facility Once you know and understand how each other thinks how each how every single person is motivated What are you motivated by? Once we find that out as leaders and once you find that out as a group
That's when you can start pushing that's when you know how to motivate that's how you know how to say something You know so for me to be able to go on the side mind and like shake someone out of it and just be like come on brother We got you let's go That's that's ultimately what you want to get to you want to get to a unit of guys that love each other and Another big thing is work hard because the offensive line everyone looks to the offensive line to work hard right and That offensive line you have to be the first ones in the last ones out doing extra running and when you're doing that You are the example for the rest of the team And I think that that permeates through the entire organization when your offensive line can do that And you got some studs up front you got guys making probals Everybody else sees that because the rest of the team is saying I want to be like that I want to make probals. I want to sign the big deal like these guys did so I pride in myself on all our offensive lines We're a tight knit group. We enjoyed Being around each other and we we spent a lot of time breaking bread
Talking life and figuring out like what makes us tick here's the hardest question of the day You have eight Rater offensive line that you can pick eight, okay? The history of the Raiders Wow and say you know what I need these four and then after a few plays some of these four in yes Number one Jim auto Gene Upshaw, you know, give me Steve Wiss Newsky. Oh, man Rodney Hudson. I love rod rods One of the best wide zone centers. I've ever seen I work with rod The hardest thing to do is cut off a nose guard in a in a tight shade right rod had this this method of shuffling around that I've never seen and I've rods were the best wide zone centers. I've ever been around Me me give me from the modern guys give me clutch a assembly give me Gabe Jackson You know, give me give me Colton Miller. Give me give me guys like that, you know guys that are just in the radar image right? Yeah tough physical play with an edge Won't quit give me any of those guys
I want to leave you with the last words. I take a lot of pride in being a part of Raider nation right? I played here. I had my hand in the dirt. I've a blood for it. I've sacrificed. I've taught the next generation of great Raiders And I just I just I just want to keep having an impact right? I just want to keep having an impact impacting these guys working with these guys getting them better And then you know to to mr. Davis to mr. Davis the alumni organization for treating us so well It is such a big part of guys identity, right? You know you bald your whole life, right? And then you get done and you kind of get out of it and it's like wait Am I not important anymore? I'm not the man like when you're ballin everyone the world revolves around you So I'm just I really love that we bring 300 guys back because I really think it's important for their mental like to come back and be like Hey, you were the man. You still are the man open arms. So I think that's that's a really special thing that this organization does really well
I'm excited man Raider nation. I'll do whatever I can to help this team win from here until the day I die We appreciate you for you know being a Raider and being an example of Of what a Raider is passing the torch and molding the next great Raiders and so you know, we support you Uh, and we're happy to have you here.
