Welcome into Lounge. I'm Ryan Mink here with Garrett Downing, following the Ravens 24 to 17 loss to the New Orleans Saints. In the home opener here at MNT Bank Stadium, this is not what the Ravens wanted. They talked all week about defending their home turf.
They didn't do that. And honestly, it's a continuation of what has been a narrative that has surrounded the team the last few years. In coughing up fourth quarter leads, the Ravens give up too long touchdown drives in the fourth quarter to lose this game. And Garrett, this is the first adversity that this team has faced in the Jesse Mintor era and one that's going to sting until they take the field next. Yeah, I think there was so much excitement and optimism coming into this game. It was a great atmosphere here at MNT Bank Stadium. The Ravens talked all week about protecting home turf wanting to play well in front of the home crowd and to come away with the loss is just really disappointing. The Ravens have lost four straight games here at MNT Bank Stadium and that's just not something that historically we are accustomed to seeing from this team. And the Ravens, I think, to the point that you mentioned that it's some of the first adversity that this team has faced under head coach Jesse Mintor,
I thought Rook wants to miss some of the things that I've been trying to do with the Ravens. I thought Rook wants to miss some of the best. He talked about the fact that over the last six, eight months since the Ravens have brought in this coaching staff and built towards the season, there's just been so much excitement and optimism and it's all been trending up the entire time. And we've all felt that, like we're all riding the wave of excitement and you know at some point you're going to lose a game, you're going to have adversity. But Rook won't made the point like there's been so much positive energy around this team and now you kind of get a reality check, you get punched in the mouth and it's going to be about how this team responds. And Derek Henry also made kind of the same point. Like adversity is going to hit early for this team and now the Ravens have to respond, have to respond the right way. Yep, absolutely. And Jesse Mintor talking before the season started was pretty realistic about it and saying, you know, we're in the honeymoon period still. You know, there's nothing can go wrong really in the off season before you play games.
Yeah, as much as we predicted a 17 to no season, it was probably unlikely to happen. So, but the way it happened is the tough part. You know, to have it be Jesse Mintor's home debut after talking all week about wanting to play better here in front of the home fans. And then also a fourth quarter, losing a fourth quarter lead and just, the Ravens did not play well in the second half in a totality. And so that's tough to swallow after we've seen that happen too many times during the John Harball era. And so, you know, Jesse Mintor was pretty up front about it after the game saying, yeah, I know what people are going to say. He saw the headlines coming when he was at the podium saying, yeah, they're going to say it's the same old thing here. And now it's up to us to look ourselves in the mirror and fix it. The other part too that I think only added to kind of the frustration of it all is how good the Ravens looked in week one against the Colts. I mean, this team seemed like a juggernaut in that game. And I know it's a week to week league and things can trend up and down even though in the course of a game.
But when you see that in the opener, you just feel like, oh, coming home, big favorites against this team, it's going to be a celebration. It's going to be a party. It's going to be this awesome game, awesome environment. And the Ravens are going to take care of business and to not be able to do it is really difficult. And I'll be honest, I did not expect, like, I did not expect this team to be one, and it's only one game. So I'm not going to say this is a trend here. But I have not expected this team to be one that was struggling with holding fourth quarter leads. I felt like with with Jesse Minter, this defensive coaching staff, the scheme, the players, I did not expect the Ravens to struggle holding on to fourth quarter leads. And so having that be the case today, surprise me. Yeah, I would agree. I thought that give some credit to the New Orleans Saints and second year quarterback Tyler Schoek. I thought he played pretty darn well, you know, efficient 27 to 34 for 252 and a touchdown. Got the ball out of his hands, quick down the stretch. And he made the Ravens pay. I think what also stings about this is, you know,
on top of everything that we said, sprinkle on top of little controversy. Late in the fourth quarter, on fourth down, the Saints scored the go ahead game winning touchdown on a QB sneak on the goal line. Tyler Schoek looked like he was stood up at the line and then went backwards from there. Unfortunately, it was ruled a touchdown on the field. It went to a replay review and seemingly they just didn't have enough evidence to overturn the call. The call stood. It was not confirmed. That language is always one that you want to pay attention to when they announce the decision. The call stood, which means they didn't have enough to overturn it. Look to me on replay review is pretty strong case to overturn that and give the Ravens the ball on the goal line, but just didn't go the Ravens way on review. Those types of plays are among the most difficult to change in replay because you're talking about inches and there's just like 22 bodies right there at the ball. There's also the hardest on the field to call.
You have a referee running from the sideline and a massive, much larger humans than him, standing in the way. It's hard to see the ball. There's also a question of whether Tyler Schoek lost control of the ball during his push toward the goal line. He regained it, but did he have control during his initial push, which was when they would have ruled he scored a touchdown? Yeah, like out of the pile, Marlowe Humphrey came out of the pile with the football. Now, it's just like impossible to tell exactly when that ball came loose, but the Ravens were asked about that just about everybody after the game. And I would say that the sense was the Ravens did not feel like he got in the end zone, but the call is what it is. I don't think anybody was like, hey, yeah, he got in. I mean, look, it was, he got in. You got to call it what it is. Nobody said that. I think everybody was like, thought he was short. Like they make the call. It's a really hard call to make. It's incredibly difficult to overturn it when you're looking at it from different angles and it's hard to see where the ball is.
All that said, like when I was watching it, it seemed like he came up short, Rokwan then pulled him backwards. And it's hard for me to see a scenario where he ended up getting in that ball across the goal line. I agree. I couldn't really see any world in which that happened. It's one of those calls where honestly, I think if he's ruled short and then the Saints challenge it and try to try to say he got in, they would have come back and said, no, there's not enough evidence that he got in. It really comes down to what the referee on the field calls. It just was so hard to turn it over, turn it either way. So in honestly, one official comes in signaling it, the official on the other side doesn't signal anything. Because one official comes in, throws his hands up. At the time, it seemed like the Ravens were really celebrating thinking that they had gotten the stop at that moment. But then it's called a touchdown on the field. And at that point, then you can't really go backwards, even though they look at it in review. And again, the call stands. What's the termination, which Reff is believed?
I mean, I think it's basically, he has to look at it. And if that official feels like I saw the ball across the goal line here, that was in. I saw it. Then you go with that determination there. But it's obviously sometimes one official has a better angle. He might have felt like he had the right angle. It's just, it's really hard to tell. It's really hard to call. But to see all the replay angles and really see nothing definitive that he was in. That was the way thing. There was nothing definitive. There was definitely nothing definitive that he was in. You know what I mean? It's a massive audience. There's nothing definitive either way. That's what I feel stands. Now, there was a pool report with the NFL Vice President of Instant Replay Mark Butterworth. And the way this works is when there's kind of a controversial play from a replay standpoint, or from an officiating standpoint, or reporters able to ask a couple of questions to the replay officials or to the game officials. And so this one went through the NFL League office with NFL Vice President of Instant Replay Mark Butterworth. This is from ESPN's Jameson Hensley.
The question he asked was, was there clear evidence that Tyler Schutt crossed the goal line on that fourth down play? Butterworth said the key here is the ruling on the field is a touchdown. So we need clear and obvious video evidence that he didn't score in order to reverse the on field ruling. We stopped the game. It's a higher leverage play. We wanted to make sure to either find clear and obvious video evidence that he didn't score or to confirm the call on the field. We exhausted all available angles and could not prove clear and obvious that he did not break the plane of the goal line. The follow up question is, during any of the replays did it show that Tyler Schutt lost control of the ball at any point while trying to get the ball across the goal line? And Butterworth's response was, no. If he did lose control of the ball, we would have, we would need to find after he regained possession if the ball broke the plane of the goal line. In that massive players, we were not able to find clear and obvious video evidence that the ball did not break the plane of the goal line, therefore the ruling on the field stands.
That's exactly what we were saying. They didn't have clear evidence that it didn't get over and that's what they called on the field. So they had to stick with that call. That's what it is. I mean, if the ref doesn't hold his arms up, the Bravens probably get a stop there and potentially win the game. Who knows, right? I mean, it would have been tied. Yeah, yeah. But what happens from there? We'll never know. We'll never know. But that's like pretty big. And they were not ever going the other way. I just wish like, I don't know. You know, this is, you lose a tough game like this. How do we not have a direct overhead cam on this? How do we not have a chip in the ball? We have so much technology. How do we not know where the ball is? Next gen stats that can tell us how many jumping jacks the guy did before the game? How do we not know this? And I know that's, this is a broker record and fans of all teams have said these things before. But I just don't understand. Yeah. Yeah, it's a tough, I think it's a tough pill to swallow because even the NFL's description of the play is you couldn't tell either way. So we went with what was on the field. Exactly. They're like, it's, I mean, when you start reading it, like there's a massive body.
It's like, yeah, like you can't tell. It's all right. And so it's just what what was calling the field is what exactly would go with? And it's, it's, it's, Ravens are obviously on the wrong end of it. She'll like the team has been on the wrong end of those types of things that I could go either way over the years. I say I likely touch sounds. Yeah, it's just like, we don't need to, we don't need to. Maybe that's not, we don't need to hit right now. But it's still a very, very tough kind of pill to swallow on that one. And it adds to like the frustration of this game. What would happen from there? We'll never know, but I sure would have liked to find out. Absolutely. Yeah. And the Ravens get the ball back with under two minutes left to play. Drive into scoring range. And then another kind of head scratcher that we're not really sure what happened with Lamar Jackson throwing a pass that that gets picked off. Really no receiver in sight there. Rashad Bateman after the game said he ran the right route. There was no real explanation from either side on what happened. Well, Lamar said too. Lamar said, you know Rashad ran the right route.
It was not a miscommunication issue because it kind of seemed like it wasn't miscommunication here because there wasn't anybody like right there in the area. Lamar did say on podium like he would like to have that throwback. But again, reiterated that Bateman ran the right route on that play. Just a really disappointing end and a frustrating end. After the Saints score that touchdown and the Ravens are under two minutes with no time outs and the length of the field to go, it's kind of an unlikely situation. But then you get down. They were in range. No, not straight range for sure. But then you get down there and you're thinking, okay, maybe you have a shot here. 20 seconds left. You have a couple of shots at the end zone. At least two to three shots at the end zone. And to have an end with an interception was just a disappointing conclusion on really disappointing second half. And that's the thing about this game. The Ravens led the entire game. They were really leading the way they had control of this game. It felt like they had it in control. And it felt like the game really was in the palm of their hands.
In the third quarter, the Ravens had a field goal. Kyle Loop kicks a long field goal 49 yarder to put them up by eight. Then suing drive, the Ravens get back to back sacks. Trey Hendrixson gets his first and then Mike Green gets one as well. The Saints are punting from the shadow of the goal line. And by the way, they just lost their left tackle on the play. Right. So the Ravens take over possession in positive field. Or they take over the 49. The Saints 49. Right. It felt like that's okay. It's just go finish this thing. You go get into field goal range there. A kick of field goal. You have your two score game. You have a two score lead going into the fourth quarter. And the Ravens then went backwards. It was just one of their worst drives of the game. We have penalties. Fall starts starts it. Then the loss of three yards on a pass. Then Lamar sacked for negative eight passing complete. Like just go backwards on that drive when you start basically at midfield.
That was that was an opportunity there to kind of ice not totally ice the game. But put yourself into a two score situation and kind of feel like let's just take the arrow on the ball here. You're just going to be able to take care of business and and solve this game away. And that was one of the things that Jesse mentioned you talked about after the game. Like yes, the defense which we'll talk about gave up too long touchdown drives late that you don't want to see. But overall you they just in all three phases they didn't kind of take advantage to extend the game or to close out the game. Like they were leading they were the Ravens were leading this whole game. You have an eight you have an eight point lead there in the third quarter. You get the ball at midfield. The offense isn't able to add to it and then flip it over to the defense side of the ball. And then they're given up too long drives. Yeah, it's a nine play 68 yard drive for the Saints to score their first touchdown. And then a two point conversion, which you thought you had him stopped on but a penalty gives him a second chance. They convert tie the game then the game winning touchdown drive. I mean goodness gracious 16 plays 68 yards just couldn't get off the field on third down on that drive.
But yeah, the point is that it's not just it's not just on the defense. Yeah, the offense like I said take over in Saints territory, go backwards. Then it's three three and out and then interceptions in the game. So the offense didn't get it done at all on their last three drives either. The big play on the on the three and out was a third and one and the Ravens dialed up a deep shot for Chris Moore, which he had a one on one. Look like it could have been completed to defense the back. Kool-Aid McKinsey McKinsey came up with a nice breakup got a hand on it just barely to knock it away for Chris Moore. It was a good defense. It was a good defense play. He got a hand on it. But of course leads to more questions. Third and one, why aren't you running Derek Henry? Why are you taking this shot a deep shot? Why are you taking deep shot to Chris Moore when you have reshot Bateman and other guys who you would think would be more the target of a deep shot? All those questions arise when you have a play call like that. Yeah, Derek Henry was asked after the game about hey, do you think you should have got the ball on that third and one?
And he said no, we're Ryan with deck like he made it clear. We're not questioning a play calling here. Declan felt like there was an opportunity. Declan Doyle, the offense quarter felt like there was an opportunity there to take a deep shot. He had a step. It looked like it was going to be a big. It was on the money and the defensive match made a great play to get in there. Get a hand in there and break out the pass. And a week ago Lamar and Chris Moore connected on that play for a big game. Well, not that exactly. Well, obviously they connected on a deep shot like that. I mean, and of course you wonder with this whole game part of the story coming into it. Certainly was the Ravens injuries, right? I mean, if you have Zay flowers out there, if you have Jacobi Lane out there, right? Chris Moore probably isn't the target on this. And so, and by the way, the Ravens had Ronnie Stanley go to the sideline midway through the game because of his toe was hurting him so much. So, you know, certainly injuries paid played a part in this game offensively for the Ravens were part of the reason why they weren't as explosive in week one.
I mean, after Zay flowers and Jacobi Lane left a half time, the Ravens were not nearly as explosive in the second half. Square ten points, I believe it was in the second half in the opener. And so today offensively was a little bit more of a grinded out. And then you end up taking a deep shot to Chris Moore who might have been on the practice squad had it not been for those injuries. And like, it played in workout, so it's easy to question that with a call and the result just like it seemed like it was there. Guy makes a great play on that one, but I do think that the absence of key players offensively it made a difference. You don't, I mean, the Ravens gave Zay flowers a massive contract. He's one of the highest paid receivers in football. Absolutely makes a difference. And you don't have a mouth there. He's one of the best players at his either in the game. He's one of the best players on either team. Yeah, like he had 150 yards and a quarter and a half and touchdown less game. So take him out, take him out of the mix. It changes what you can do offensively and Jacobi lane too. You know, it's still a rookie. So we'll see obviously what he, what he adds up becoming, but a lot of excitement and belief in what he can bring to the offense. And then the offensive line like Ronnie Stanley, he was definitely feeling the effects of that toe injury.
And then it comes out in the fourth quarter of that game. Jesse Menter said describe it as basically the Ravens knew that was a possibility that he might not be able to finish the game. He gave it a go really battle through that injury, but wasn't able to finish the game. And so you know, he was feeling that out there. John Simpson also mispracticed time this week with an injury. So the less side of your line was kind of banged up out there. And then you're without two-year top wide receivers. Yeah, absolutely. That makes a difference in this game. And you know, it was, it was not the same offense that we saw in the first half, certainly in Indianapolis. And I thought it still had some good moments for shot Bateman stepped in for Z Flowers and played pretty darn well in the number one role. I mean, he had more yards today with his 88 receiving yards on seven catches than he had in any game last season. Right. Had a touchdown for the first time since Halloween of last year. So I thought Rashad Bateman played pretty darn well. They leaned on Mark Andrews more heavily.
Mark had seven targets caught six from for 49 yards. And so it was really Rashad and Mark for the most part, offensively in the passing game. Devantez Walker did hit one big shot for 47 yards. And then Derek Henry. But Derek Henry only had 16 carries for 68 yards. I thought he would probably end up with more than that today. Yeah, it seemed like it was headed in that direction. And he scores that direct snap touchdown. And the first half of this game, you feel like he's just going to be able to pick up there. He left off with a hundred yard game and three touchdowns a week ago. Only had five carries in the second half, which is a little bit surprising considering the success that he had early in this game. And the Ravens having that lead. But again, they there were shortened drives for the Ravens offense and really long drives by the Saints offense. And so I think that contributed to what the carries look like for Henry in the second half of that game. The offense just also hurt itself with penalties.
I mean, in the in the second half also you look at a 14 play field goal drive for the Ravens that you know you have a holding penalty on Chris Moore on the crazy Lamar Jackson scramble that would have been an incredible play to pick up a first down. That holding call. Lamar, Lamar brought that up after the game saying I did not think that was holding that was a really soft one. And then next play Roger Rersinger called for an eligible man down field on what was a successful kind of short pass in Mark Andrews that he picked up 10 yards on. So, you know, the offense just kind of stubs his toe, shot itself in the foot too many preset penalties again for another week. And then you get negative plays like sacks and stuff like that and that just kills drives. And so I thought that was part of the problem in addition to not having some of your playmakers out there for the second half. They just didn't have the ball a lot in the second half. Right. They had they had two drives in the third quarter. And then two in the fourth.
They had four total drives in the second half because there's long Saints drives. They wanted to just describe the 14 play field goal drive that kind of went backwards at the end. They had to settle for it. Then three play negative 16 yards. You know, that's the one at midfield. And then if three and out in the interception like this didn't have the ball much in the second half offensively and didn't make the most of the few opportunities they had. Right. And that final drive. I mean, it counts, but it's like that's not a normal drive. Like you get the ball back with a minute 20 left and no time out. You got to go the length of the field for a touchdown that you're in scramble mode at the point. So it's connected. That was Jesse Menter's point. It's all connected. All three phases. The defense has to get off the field. The offense when they have an opportunity to extend the lead to extend the drive. They need to be able to do that. And special teams as well gave up a long return. Tyler Loop was one or two on field goals today. Hit a 49 yard or missed a 49 yard or six point difference on special teams alone today. I thought that in the first half. My analysis was the offense is winning its battle.
The defense is winning its battle and the special teams was not. It lost the battle in the first half. It was not good, you know, have a field goal blocked. Just kind of look like barely a finger got on that one. And it goes sideways. And then yeah, you give up a long return right before the or yeah, right before the end of the first half. That leads gives them a free field goal. And so that's a six point swing right there. And what ended up with us being a seven point game. So a big deal. Yeah. Yeah, no doubt. So we'll take a quick break when we come back. We'll give you our final thoughts from this game and also talk about where the Ravens go from here. You're listening to the lounge podcast. We are coming to you from the Seat Geek studio. So I want to talk about how the Ravens got out of this game from a health standpoint. That's always a big focus. The big question I think coming out of it is Ronnie Stanley. And he the people have spoken and McDonald's listened back by popular demand. The Ravens activated Jared Lichtenhahn from the practice squad on Saturday. And he was inactive on Sunday. They brought him up as an insurance policy in case Stanley wasn't able to play. Then Stanley was able to play, but not the entire game. The question in my mind is, how long does this thing linger? Are you dealing with a...
You might be able to play some of the game, have to come out of certain games. What does this look like moving forward? Well, credit to Ronnie Stanley for playing at all. I mean, for a guy who struggled with injuries and struggled to stay on the field earlier in his career. He's only missed one, start the past two seasons, and then obviously gridded this one out and went out there to play. So credit to him, but it's not good. I mean, toe injuries for offensive tackles, you know, Ravens fans know that didn't work out well for Jonathan Ogden. Something he dealt with for a number of years in really short in his career. I'm not saying that it's... I don't know how bad Ronnie's is, but it's not good. To injuries don't like go away in a week, right, generally speaking. And so it might be something that the Ravens have to manage. I think the good news is Carson Vincent stepped in. I thought played pretty well. I haven't looked at the film, but I didn't notice him in a negative way. The Ravens did give up a sack, but it wasn't on him, you know, after he went in. So, and the Ravens have a lot of confidence in Carson Vincent, if he has to continue to play a role moving forward.
On Friday, Jesse Menter said he was one of the teams most improved, if not the most improved player over the summer. So you like to hear that about him, but it's not good. Ronnie Stanley is a veteran tackle who they really rely upon. And so, you know, that's something they have to deal with. One of my takeaways is like, man, that Colts season opener was a great win, but goodness gracious. It took a toll on this team from a physical standpoint. Zay Flowers heads to the sideline. You put Jacobi Lane and TJ Tampa on IR. That's two players missing a minimum of four games. You have Ronnie Stanley dealing with a toe and... And Trey Hendrix and Trey Hendrix in with his finger. I mean, your star pass rusher, you give the biggest contract, free agent contract to, and franchise history. Now, the only thing that Trey did get his first sack as a Raven, which was a great today, but the pass rush, you know, in the second half. Now, I do think the Saints were getting the ball out quickly, which certainly makes it harder on your pass rush. The coverage needs to be a little bit tighter than if it's a quick pass game, and it wasn't tight enough.
But regardless, good to see Trey get his first sack, but the point being, that was a tough, that was a costly week one win in Indianapolis. And something now that you have these injuries, not only that it put two guys on the shelf on IR, but other players are going to have to be managing. You know, when does Zay Flowers get back on the field because they want to be careful with this hamstring? How, you know, all those things, it's just not good moving forward. The other one that wasn't a result of the cold scheme, but his non-demand BK has yet to make his debut, kind of felt for the last couple of weeks, hey, this could be the week, and then he's been ruled out on Friday, each of the last days. Why hasn't had a full practice yet? You know, I would certainly think that that would be your first indication that NAMD is getting ready to play, would that be that he would log a full participation practice. It's been limited throughout. The Ravens said when they didn't put him on an injured reserve, they felt like he was going to play in the first four games of the season. Now there's two games left in order for that to be the case. Hopefully it's Dallas. Hopefully Wednesday we get the injured board and it's not the amount of BK full practice participation.
I think that'd be a great sign that it might be next week. Ravens could certainly use him. No doubt about that. And quickly, quick point on the past rush and the coverage, that was something that Jesse Mitter said after the game was that the coverage and the past rush need to need to work together and be kind of in conjunction with how they're operating. And they didn't do that in the second half of this game. And I think that speaks to what you're talking about. If they're bringing a lot of pressure and or if they're getting rid of the ball quick, then you need to adjust your covers not to let them have success in that quick passing game. And it was it felt like so TV star was in gets a sack. Then in the second half on that one drive, like you mentioned, Hendrickson gets his first sack. Mike Green gets his first sack of the season. And you feel like, okay, now this past rush has really come in alive in a way that you want. And that was kind of the peak. I would say for the defense, it was it was really downhill from there, unfortunately for this team. So looking ahead, I think the main focus for this team is the rebound piece.
And like I definitely didn't get the sense that this team was walking out of the stadium today, feeling like, man, this is a crushing loss that we can't come back from. Like I did not have that feeling at all. Mark Andrews said like this team has very different from last year's team. Very drew a pretty hard line on that line of questioning that this is a different year, new year, totally different team. And that he expects that they're going to rebound in a strong way. Hey, you got to go out there and do it. But I think that there, of course, you never want to have a loss, especially an early loss in a game at home that you should, you should win. Yeah. But you know, this team facing this early on, I was kind of impressed with how they handled it and how its team leaders spoke about it in the locker room. They're not hitting the panic button. Yeah, right. I was a far from it. And I thought that that's a little bit of a reflection of not only just the team they think they have. It's a reflection of their head coach and Jesse Minner is not going to hit the panic button either.
And I think this team feels very confident that they're going to be a really good team this year. You got to do it. You got to do it. You can't just say it. But I have that confidence too. And this is something that you're going to have to learn from. Yeah. So next up for the Ravens is matchup with the Dallas Cowboys in Rio.
