UNC Tar Heels face critical questions as Michael Malone’s recruiting strategy comes under fire—can he land top-tier prospects, or will another blue-chip talent slip away, as Jordan Page appears to have done? Isaac Schade and Josh Marlow break down the drama surrounding crystal ball predictions for Jordan Page and discuss why timing—not panic—should guide expectations for the next wave of elite commits in Chapel Hill. With NIL, the transfer portal, and evolving college basketball dynamics, will Michael Malone’s approach produce the results fans crave?

On the gridiron, North Carolina takes on the powerhouse Notre Dame Fighting Irish as 21.5-point underdogs. The hosts spotlight Billy Edwards Jr.’s make-or-break moment at quarterback, keys to establishing the run, and whether the defense can contain CJ Carr’s high-octane offense. What does a “win” look like for UNC if the upset seems out of reach? Don’t miss their “What 2 Watch 4” predictions and bold score forecasts as Tar Heel football faces its toughest test yet.

Coach Malone has had all these official visitors to campus, but Isaac, why can't Coach Malone

close? This guy's not good. Okay, easy does it everybody. We'll explain it. This is David Noel and you're listening to Lockdown Tar Heels. You are Lockdown Tar Heels, your daily podcast on the UNC Tar Heels, part of the Lockdown Podcast Network, your team every day. Hey there, what's up? Welcome into the Lockdown Tar Heels Podcast. I'm your host, Isaac Shane. Join by our good buddy, Josh Marlow from the Four Corners Podcast in the heel tough blocks. You better go check out their great work right now getting you ready for the notice game this weekend and so much more one week from a day. Carolina basketball versus USC. Ooh, Marlow, I can't wait for us to prove that and pit next week. Man, we got, maybe I'll have to do two different shows for that. This is going to be a crazy Friday next week. Coming up on the show today though, at the end of the show, we're going to have our What to Watch For as Carolina host Notre Dame on Saturday. Before we get to that, we'll discuss what does a win look like on the field on Saturday.

We would love for it to be an actual win. But if not, what do we need to see from Carolina to know that they're continuing to take steps forward? But before all of that, Marlow, why can't I keep giving this question, Isaac? Why can't Coach Malone close? What's happening? He's just, Crystal Baldi Yukon. He's screwed it all. Okay. All right. We'll explain it. We'll let you know what's going on. Josh Marlow, this episode is brought to us by Game Time. Download the app, creating the account and use code locked on for $20 off your first purchase. Marlow, I cannot tell you how many times in the last several days I have been getting this about like Isaac. We have had Rosser and Paige and blah and blah and all these guys visit campus. The coach Malone, he can't close. He can't get a commitment. Josh Marlow, this week, Jordan Paige who visited during the homecoming weekend, the reunion weekend, got a crystal ball from very reputable people at 247 sports to Yukon.

How concerned are you about that specific thing and the state of Michael Malone's recruiting? Not at all concerned, mildly concerned or shaking in your boots legitimately concerned. Yeah, shade not at all concerned because it's October 1st. They were recording this podcast. There's still a long time to go in this recruiting cycle and what he's trying to do next year. When we talked recruiting earlier this summer, my main message that I wanted to get across was, isn't it just fun being a part of the best high school prospects? The sport has to offer. You look up and down the top 10, whether you do 247 sports on three ESPN, whatever. You're going to see Carolina's name virtually associated with every type of prospect in that respective class, which is the way it should be. That doesn't mean that they're all come into Chapel Hill.

The days of what John Calapari did at Kentucky, what Duke has done at certain times bringing three, four top 10 players to their respective campus. Those days are long gone because of NIL, because of transfer portal, this and the other. I still think shade that we're going to get two top 10 players when this thing is all said and done. That's a really good step in the right direction for a head coach that pretty much told you when he got hired. Hey, this program didn't recruit in the way this program should recruit. This program hasn't developed talent the way the program should develop talent. I'm here. We're going to fix that. Did I like seeing the Jordan page that you can't stuff? Obviously not. No, but I didn't sit here and think, well, there goes our one chance to land a recruit of the stature. That was the issue under Hubert was you were involved with maybe a top 10 prospect, maybe two.

You got up sometimes in Caleb Wilson, Elliott Kado, but if you missed on them, that usually meant that you were settling for high in four star prospects that were going to impact the team if they played for two to three years as opposed to impactful freshmen. Michael Malone's going to land at least one or two of those for the thing is all said and done. Here's what I heard you just say, Josh Marlow, when you said it's October 1st, you're saying you guys look at the calendar, not the crystal ball, right? Like, part of it for me, why isn't coach Malone closing right now? Because no one is closing right now. If you go to two four seven sports, class of 2027, Marlow, do you know how many of the top 10 players in the class of 2027 have verbally committed somewhere? If I had to guess at the zero, that's exactly right. Zero players in the top 10 have committed somewhere because again, let's remind her, yes, Jordan Page is crystal ball to you, Conn.

And yes, it's from I can if it's bossy or who it's from, but you know, one of their very reputable people. But a crystal ball does not equal a commitment, especially in this era where rosters are often in flux and we see a lot of change and a lot of moving around. And so I love what you're essentially saying here, Marlow, is when you cast a wide net, you're going to strike out more than you're going to hit because look, I'll make an analogy and then I'll toss it back to you. I'm just coming out of a decade of working in high higher education. I was a professor at a college teaching like Bible, teaching New Testament classes, worship classes. And one of the things our admissions department was always working to do was expand the funnel, meaning they were trying to find more potential people to come to our college, looking outside our regular places, different areas, making a bigger funnel, meant more possible people you could get to our school. That's what coach Malone is doing here is casting this wide net. So you're going to strike out more than you're going to hit.

But if you hit on two or three, that's all you're really trying to do. And two out of three, two or three out of 20, 25, whatever it is, that's not a high percentage, but you're not looking for a high percentage, Josh Marlow. No, you're not. I also think recruiting has changed in the portal era. Yes, because you don't know what these rosters are going to look like from a year to year basis, where you're going to see some of these guys maybe take their recruitment into the calendar year of 2027 and kind of exhaust it to see how many roster spots are available at some of these premier programs. And I think we just we've got to you got to look at the context and the nuance. I don't think it's from Carolina not being able to put together a competitive package. I don't think it's that these kids aren't interested in playing for Michael Malone. I think that's the exact opposite. I think Carolina financially, you know, is there?

I think people are interested in to see what Michael Malone can and will do at the collegiate level. But he also is yet to coach a game here and people may want to see what the earlier returns are before they maybe try to officially come play for him. So That's a great point, Marlo. Yes, I'm still really confident about what this class can and will be because I do think Carolina is committed to recruiting elite high school talent. Like I do think if Michael Malone has his way, the way that he will build his rosters will be to get high end five star high school prospects, maybe get those two guys that are going to be multi-year players to keep continuity on your roster. And then you go portaling to get the rest of what your roster needs. And so indoor international or international. Exactly. That's not going away anytime soon. So I still think there's no reason to panic.

Carolina is still going to attract the type of talent that he wants as a coach that we want his fans. It just might take a little bit longer because the recruiting landscape continues to evolve in the NIO in the portal era. Here's what I think is happening maybe at some level is people are trying to grade Michael Malone on whether or not he has landed a player before the market has not only not closed yet. It hasn't really opened yet to our point. It's like people are still trying to figure out. All of this their players are taking longer than ever to commit as they wait to see the landscape and what things look like. But Marlow, I do want to be very fair because like we do need to ask the question, okay, but if there are commitments that don't happen at what point are you allowed to become concerned because I don't just want to dismiss that out of hand. I think clearly and obviously as you said, the answer is not October 1st.

But eventually results matter, right? Coach Malone doesn't get infinite amounts of time to say we're involved with great players at some point. He's got to deliver on that. So is there a point at which if Coach Malone hasn't gotten guys that it is okay to become concerned in your mind? Yeah, I mean, if we're sitting here, I'm not going to say this time next year because this time next year we're moving on to the 28th class. But you got to remember shade remember Caleb Wilson committed a huge day was in February. Yes, that was a top 10 recruit, top 10 and a whole lot of the future of the program at the time really hung in the in the balance of a was Caleb Wilson coming to Carolina or was he not because once you got him, you knew that you had to go build a roster around him. So you least kind of wait till March. I would say we're sitting here in March. We got no dudes. We got we don't have anyone of significance committed. All right, we may have to call coach and say, Hey, it's going on over there.

Yeah, don't think that's going to happen, man. I don't either because you know what happened right around that same time is the portals about to open and that's when stuff's going to get really interesting. Exactly. So, yeah, it's one of the it's why I have kind of removed myself from the recruiting space because there's nothing good to gain from it. It's I get sick seeing the way that grown adults, you know, you know, fantasize about these kids coming to play football or basketball for their favorite school. And then I get sick when we don't get the kids and then there's a negative backlash to again, high school kids making the best of the decision for themselves. I haven't lost faith in what Carolina can be and will be under Michael alone. And I think it's I think it's okay to you know, move with caution as he does navigate his first, you know, recruiting class as a college basketball coach. So here's where I think we ultimately would land.

And Josh Marlow on this why hasn't coach Malone closed yet question that does feel premature. Don't panic because he hasn't closed yet, but eventually he does have to close. And I think people have tried to polarize those against each other. I think both can be true. It's not time to panic yet, but eventually you do have to close. Let's transition to this football game coming up on Saturday in Keenan Carolina up against it against number three team in the nation. Noter Dane going to be a very tough one, but winner lose. Your team every single day. Josh Marlow, Carolina hosting Notre Dame, a fourth straight new in Eastern kick. Tomorrow Saturday, by the way, there's at least one more of those coming next week up in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, my father's homeland. Yes. Here's the thing. I want to ask you the question. What defines a win against Notre Dame? And let me give a little context to this question. I'm not conceding the game, but number three Notre Dame is a very different game than the last home game this season. ETSU, heck, it's even a different game than going down to Clemson. But if we're evaluating where this program is after four games, but in particular, how do we stack up against a legit national championship contender in Notre Dame? I feel that way. I'm curious to hear if you do here in a second. What needs to happen Saturday?

This is my question. For us to come away believing that the Tar Heels continue to move in the right direction. Yeah, you may not be conceding the game. I will go ahead and concede the game. There's not a chance. And with all the Carolina loose ties in the world, Carolina lose the game. And if they win, and your audience wants to pick a punishment for something I have to do for not having faith in Carolina, I'll be more than glad to go through with that. We'll make you shave your head. Well, I've already done that. Ah, shoot. I guess we're out then. No, no. Yeah. So with that being said, you got to think you're 21 point underdogs at home. Shade, if this is a 10 point game in the fourth quarter, I'm going to be ecstatic. Yeah, that's a good word. If it's a 14 point game in the fourth quarter, I would probably take that. I think if you cover the spread, I think you feel really really good about that.

Depending on how, like I don't want to backdoor my way into covering. No, but like, if it's like a competitive cover where Carolina loses, you know, Carolina loses the game. I don't know. 3521, but even in the fourth quarter, Notre Dame is having to put together drives, get stops to really avoid being on upset alert. I think you take it. I think what's frustrating is the closing game was the latest example of why you hired Bill Belichick was to get over the hump against a program of that stature. Yep. And when you were up 17 to three, you thought you were on your way to doing that. That didn't happen. Moments like this against Notre Dame are why you hired Bill Belichick and, you know, you're going to be playing as a new game, but it's, you know, there's going to be a national spotlight because you've got Notre Dame in your backyard. This is a national championship caliber program.

And we're not talking about trying to win the game. We're talking about trying to cover. And I think that probably falls flat for a lot of Carolina fans. But I think if Carolina is competitive, if they cover the spread and Notre Dame has to play their starters for quarters, I think I'd still feel really optimistic about what this season can be because this will be the best team Carolina plays this year. This is my national champion pick in the preseason. I picked CJ Carter, win the Heisman, Marcus Freeman. I think it's the best coach in the country that not win a national championship. I think all those things are going to probably be accomplished later this year. So if Carolina can push them and make them have to play their starters for quarters and we cover the spread, I think you feel pretty good about the effort they put together on Saturday. By the way, I'm right with you. I have so much respect for Marcus Freeman, like I am a massive fan. And that's tough because Marlow, I'm going to point behind me.

My preacher lives right across the street for me right over here and is grew up in South Bend, Indiana. And he's going to lay into me this weekend. He's already got his Notre Dame flag flying out front of his house. He's probably going to make fun of me and his sermon. My best friend, the best man in my wedding is a massive Notre Dame fan. I've gone with him to a Notre Dame game before against Georgia Tech. My boss at my, I talked about being in higher education. My boss there are academic dean, massive Notre Dame. So it's all around me, Marlow. That's the hard part here. But I think you're spot on. The phrase that came into my head as you were saying what you just said is, can the tar heels make the number three team in the country and your preseason pick for national champion? Can they make them beat them? Can they force them? I love how you said it. Like they're having to put together fourth quarter drives. They have what I would call real game pressure on them in the fourth quarter. And I think I would boil that down to, can you look like you belong in this game?

Right? They clearly looked like not only did they belong again at Clemson, they were getting the better of the Tigers in Death Valley. I don't expect Carolina to do that here, but can you, can you avoid embarrassment? Can you avoid looking out class like you did last year against TCU and against Clemson? They've, they've rectified both of those this year going one and one in those games. They should have been two and a, um, but I, I think maybe another thing that I would say here as an answer to my own question is in, in some way, I would like to show, I would like Carolina to show us that the Clemson game taught them how to finish. And I don't necessarily mean that in terms of they're going to be down by, you know, two minute drill down to when you got to get a field goal. I, because I'm with you, I don't really see that as a reality. But can you do some things to show like, oh, man, we did take lessons away from what we should have finished off at Clemson.

And ultimately, as I love you put this, leave Saturday believing not just, oh, okay, I see some things for 27, leave Saturday believing, hey, we could win four more games in 2026 and go dancing in a bowl. Yeah. And I think, I think that's really important. Um, because I think there's a way you can gain confidence, even if you lose. Like if you play well and, you know, if you want to go full coach, speak, you play the best to your ability. And it's, but it might not be good enough, but you know that you played a more complete game than you played the last time. That's right. Then you might feel you can get Pittsburgh on the road or get Duke or, or whatever. The issue with the Clemson game was that you didn't finish. And I, the Clemson was, I thought clearly the better team though the, in the second half, but you still had a chance with that drive to where if you punch it in for a touchdown, you go up nine, the maths kind of in your favor at that point where you probably, we probably come out of that game three, you know, game day probably doesn't come to Chapel Hill because

with Iowa did, you know, but you still have like a massive spotlight game was an undefeated a team hosting hosting Notre Dame. So, um, what, what I hope to avoid as someone that plans on being in the stadium, I don't want that place to be empty in the middle of the third quarter because it's, it's over. That's what happened in these types of games last year at home where, you know, we showed up, we showed out, but by the middle of the third quarter, the place was empty and you had the tarp soft, where I was going crazy in back behind the student section. So, um, but they have their work cut out for them. Um, that's the thing is this is the best team they have played. This is the best team they have played under Bill Bell check. Jones Angel believes this is the best team they have played since Clemson back in 2019. Oh, wow. Trevor Lawrence keeps the Chapel Hill with the number one team overall in the country. So, what's going to take their best effort just to do the things we're talking about to feel

like a win, let alone for them to actually win the game, for them to win the game shade. They're going to have to play the game of their lives and Notre Dame's going to have to help them. There's going to have to be turnovers penalties, so on and so forth just because I do think there is a big discrepancy in, in the talent and the depth. Uh, when you look at our roster compared to theirs. And all that leads us to then talking about our want to watch for what are four things we're watching for in this game that will help determine it, including a Notre Dame team that does not beat themselves as Marlow was just saying, maybe we could get them into some of that. And I think the biggest place we got to start is with Billy Edwards, who coach Bella chick nicely told us earlier this week is in fact still QB one. What's his follow up to the Clemson game? We'll talk about it in just a second. Right after I tell you about game time, college football is full of games you plan for all year, but sometimes the best memories come from games that you actually have to be there for games that you almost missed. Uh, you got to find a way to get to Kenian to Kenian.

What is that to Kenan to be there for this game? Carolina versus Notre Dame right now. You can get tickets for his cheap as $139 on game time for this. And honestly, one of the cool things about game time is usually the tickets go down the closer you get to kick off. So keep watching this thing as we get into Friday and Saturday. Keep looking at it. You can also check out their zone deals. I'm seeing the little purple box right here on screen. Basically what you do is you choose a zone that saves you some money and then game time picks the specific tickets within that zone where you could get it even cheaper. I love it. You can browse games. You can see views from your seat before you purchase all sorts of great ways to get into these games with game time. All of these tickets and more. Yes, basketball coming up. If you want to go see theater, my family and I used game time previously for dude, perfect tickets like all of that is on game time. You need to go check it out today because again, there's certain games that just don't do it on TV. You got to go see it in person.

The second straight game for the Tar Heels coming literally right out of game day as they did against Clemson on ESPN a couple of weeks ago.

The fifth most viewed game of that weekend if I remember correctly. And can Carolina do it again against the number three team in the nation? Marlow, we are going to get fans ready for this game with our what to watch for. What are we starting with? Yes, Shay. The first thing I will be watching for when I'm in keen and then stadium on Saturday. Hey, too. So much for that. Right. But well, well, well played. Is how does the veteran Billy Edwards Jr. respond at quarterback? Bill Bella checked set up set on Monday that he's our guy. I wonder how much longer he's the guy if he puts together a performance like we saw. The last time we saw him against Clemson where if you really want to pitch in whole what went wrong for Carolina's offense, his inability to connect on throws really hitting that offense from doing what they needed to do in the second half to secure a win. I was in favor of a quarterback move if Carolina opted to do it.

I thought now was the right time to do it with two weeks off because of the by week. That was not the case. I do think Billy gives you the best chance to win this game. I do. And that's probably why he's still the starters because they look at this game individually. He's still probably the best option. But this is a better defensive line than what he saw against Clemson. And we saw what they were able to do to his mechanics when they got him moving around in the pocket. They're just as physical on the back end. They'll be just as capable of locking up ship, Jolani Thurman and all the other guys. So he's going to have to play the best game he's played. Not only is it Torhiel, but in all of his stops across his college football career, you're interested to see how Billy Edward responds after his first quote on quote bad game back against Clemson. That's a good word. Number two, can Carolina run it again against Clemson? They had over 200 yards on the ground for the first time this season. Ben Hall went over 100 yards individually for the first time in his college football career.

You still saw Jalen McGill spelling him. You still saw Juju June as kind of the closer the battering ram. We're starting to see these roles a little more defined here. And I think we're learning it is going to be a three headed group in some way, a very Bill Bella chicken backfield, right? But the question for me is, can they run it again the same way they did against against Clemson? I don't think they can run it at that same level. The Clemson interior defense was very difficult. Carolina just punished and punished and punished, which by the way is very disappointing when you go back to that fourth and one. Anyway, and like Notre Dame has a much more stout line, but can Carolina do that? And it ties in with what you just said against about Billy Edwards there. Marlow is, you got to be able to balance this offense with some pass with some run. Bobby Patrino has had two weeks to get ready for this. What sort of wrinkles are we going to see? By the way, you get a little bit of personnel back that you didn't have against Clemson on this side of the ball in the form of CJ Sadler. I have gone on record as saying if Reese Verhoff had been available in that Clemson game,

I think Carolina wins. If you have the game breaking capability of CJ Sadler to pair with Jalani Thurman and Jordan ship in that game, I think Carolina wins. And so there's a lot of that, but I think it's all predicated on Carolina's ability to run the ball and give Billy Edwards a little more time. Absolutely. I think you want to do it to shorten the game. We want to play a eight possession football game. That's good. And the max. And the football keep that clock moving. Keep that Notre Dame offense on the sideline, which bring me to my second one to watch for can Carolina's defense bend, but not break? To me, it's inevitable shade. CJ Car is going to be is going to move the ball. This offense is not going to struggle to gain yards and pick up first downs. But what happens when they cross your 30? Are you giving up six? You're giving up three? Maybe you put them in a position where they want to go. Would you give up nine? That was the big difference when you go back to the TCU game.

Was TCU moved the ball very well in the first half just didn't have a whole lot to show for it. Yeah, she moves the ball pretty well. Didn't have a lot to store for it. Exactly. So I think, you know, Bella checks fine with giving up yards. He doesn't want to give up the points. You know, I think the magic number for Carolina, if they want to have a chance to win this, things like probably like 24 is the most they could probably give up. If I'm being brutally honest with you. So that's going to be the thing. And it really comes down to two things. Communication and tackling both things. Phillip party against Clemson. That's right. Especially the tackling in the secondary with Coleman Bryson who missed five tackles alone in that game. So that's something I'm going to be interested in to see, especially if Carolina can limit possessions. And I think if they can hold the ball, they will. When Notre Dame has it, how many times does Notre Dame march it down for six points? How many times are they marching down for three points? How many times can he force a turn ever on down or just an outright play? And you know, who's going to be involved in that outright play is Greg Smith, because I feel like he's been involved in every takeaway so far.

It's crazy. And in part of that, you know, there's like a key player back in all three phases of the game. I already mentioned Sadler on offense. Reese Verhoff in special teams. But also the expectation is that Melcart Abu Jada will be back for the defense. How much is he going to be able to do? How effective will he be? Because I think one of the things we saw against Clemson kind of back to your point is, I think our Carolina's ones, at least up front, are really, really good. But as the game wore on, you see the lack of depth start to rear at ugly head. And I think eventually you get to the point where it's not just you've got strong ones, but maybe two's and even into some threes. But I think that's probably still at least a year away. So that's part of the issue here is how fresh can that strong front beat? Number four in the what to watch for is discipline, Josh Marlow. You mentioned like a game changing takeaway. How about this? The Notre Dame fighting Irish do not beat themselves. Marlow, any clue how many turnovers they've committed this season?

They've played what? Four games? Four games. Three. One. No. Throw fumbles lost. I don't even know if they have any fumbles, but zero lost in one CJ car interception. That's it. But they have nine takeaways, dude. They are plus eight in turnover margin right now. Carolina has to play a discipline to brand a football. Now here's the thing. Billy Edwards only has one interception this season. And even that was on a kind of desperation throw at the end of the Clemson game, right? And so Carolina has done pretty well. They've been pretty disciplined in terms of penalties. And so you have to play kind of what you said about giving up points. Magic number. I think clean football magic number is there as well. You have to try your best to win both the penalty margin and the turnover margin. If not at least one of those to have a shot at this game. Yeah. Maybe Bella check has a thing or two up his sleeve.

Maybe they roll out of coverage or two that confuses CJ car. And maybe you can you can get something like that. But it's not something that you can you can bank on just because there's a well coach football team. So it's not just a turnover. It's also, you know, it's also the penalties, making sure you don't have an untimely penalty that takes away a big play on on either side. But when you're as well coach, just an underday miss, you pretty much go into the game expecting they ain't going to do something to beat themselves. Which means you've got to do that, but even more so, which puts even more pressure, even more pressure on you. But praise your things have happened shade. Absolutely. And look, the first month of the season was very wild. The second month of the season could be very wild. What better way to start than when the home upset. There were the over the golden donors. And it's the start of a nine week stretch of nine games with no break.

So you're just open for some health and to propel yourself into those final eight games after this, which will start again next Saturday at new n eastern at Acres your stadium up in Pennsylvania. So Marlow, 21 and a half point underdogs here at the Tar Heels are you got a game prediction here on the score? Yeah, I've gone on record thinking Carolina covers. Same thing. And you know, they're the old adage that good team wins, good teams win, great teams cover. I don't think Carolina wins. I do think they cover by a point. I think that our end win is 34 14. Oh, so I did a crossover show with locked on Irish host Tyler Wojack. Go check that out. You've missed it. And I said 31 13 on there. I got Carolina in the end zone once plus two Reese for half field goals. But excuse me, I said 28 13. Okay. I said four Notre Dame touchdowns, but no field goals for them. No three pointers. We're keeping away from that. So, but we're in that very, very similar ballpark there with our score prediction.
