About this episode

“I don't think he's got a little more green in it, doesn't it? Because we could look at any how it's player and barker. Yes, we can look on SportsNet 590 in the band and sports.”From the transcript

Jeff Blair and Kevin Barker look back at the weekend of post-season games including the Atlanta Braves tying their series against the Dodgers in L.A., before bringing on Baseball Today and Dugout Discussions' Chris Rose (9:29) to chat about San Diego Padres' Mason Miller's blown save against the Milwaukee Brewers and on the verge of being swept, the state of playoff pitching, if the Cleveland Guardians would consider moving José Ramírez around the batting order, the team's matchup against Chicago White Sox's Anthony Kay in Game 2, and why the Tampa Bay Rays look dominant against the New York Yankees. Then, Rays TV analyst and former MLB pitcher Brian Anderson (31:15) shares his expectations for Freddy Peralta in Game 2 against the Yankees, how the coaching staff got Peralta's arm extension back, Tampa's lineup against Cam Schlittler, Liam Hicks' transition to the organization, and why Victor Mesa Jr. could be an x-factor.

All right. Look at you, Mr. Cackie. What's your mouth? Hey. I don't think this is Cackie. I don't know if it is. I don't think he's got a little more green in it, doesn't it? I don't know. I never wanted to. Because we could look at any how it's player and barker. Oh, we're cackified. Yes, we can look on SportsNet 590 in the band and sports. I have a kid, big of a join them. That's where I met Lamp. Oh, yeah. You know what I'm saying? That's... I fought it for two long days. Two long life shade of tan with a yellowish tinge. Yeah. As well as a heavy duty cotton cloth used to make utility clothing and military uniform. Yes, but... Did you know it's an Urdu word? Nope. That means dust. Wash soil. Anyhow. Yep. What is this? And that's about all you're going to learn today. No, I'm just kidding. We've got a really good show. Chris Rose, host of baseball today. And dug out discussions with John Boy Media. We'll join us. Talk about the guards and the White Sox series.

Yeah, rooting for the White Sox series. Both AL series continue today on the network. White Sox and Guardians at 5 o'clock. Anthony Kay. I know I expected him to be in the postseason when he was here. Anthony Kay against Gavin Williams. And then 8 o'clock. My raise. We're Freddie Peralta on the mound against Cam Schlitler. Cam Schlitler in the Yankees. The raise leading that series. One game to nothing. It is an off day in the national league. And I mean, I think, well, I was going to say I may have misread that brewer's pod race series. Milwaukee leading that series to games to nothing. And the Braves beating the Dodgers. 3 2 and they haven't run a starting picture out yet. They've been going on bullpen days. So Chris sale goes in game 3. And I guess Tyler Molly will probably go in game 4. We were talking before he came in the air. We both, I came into the room where you're watching.

You said to me, as pitching's been unbelievable. The pitching we're seeing in the postseason is just, it's probably no surprise because pitching's never been better. But my God, it's been, it's been something else. Yeah, I mean, I take pride sometimes of sort of sitting on the couch and having my bad on the index. I don't even want to try that anymore. I mean, that's how good they are. They're just so good. I just don't know how you can combat it. And the first thing I thought of, and I got to be fair to, you know, just myself and the year that we've watched the J's have, there's no way that J's lineup could hit the stuff that's been right out there. On an everyday basis, not a chance. Just tells you that the lineup needs to get a lot better. Like, you need to get tons better hitters in there. Look, just the power they can throw, the tunneling of the secondary stuff, the unpredictability. I mean, lefties are dominating varieties. Did you? It's just no easy way to make an approach. Like, you want to make an approach pitch to pitch. It's just a lot to ask. Like, how do you cheat to hit 99 and then lay off a strike to ball breaking ball?

Yeah, did you just fight hard? By the way, did you speak about tunneling? Did you see the graphic on Drew Rasmussen tunneling? It's like everything. Yeah, he's got a really good year. Yeah, that cutter up and then to lefties is sort of the equalizer. He can kind of exit right where it's when you're, you know, staying out of the middle of the plate and you can hit all edges of that X with multiple speeds with different shapes. I mean, just he's added to the list of kind of what you're trying to do as an offensive player. And if you're a right-handed hitter, trying to face all of this power, right-handed throwers that can throw that secondary stuff. And, you know, the reality of it is, is what these khakis have done. It's basically told you, Spitch, we don't care if you're welcome. We'd rather you punch him out. And if you walk him, you're welcome. You got to do good enough stuff that the lineups just consistently aren't long enough that if you walk a guy that you should be walking anyway, you can get the next guy out. I was going to say though. Crazy. Really, your best bet is to do or to hope that something happens like happened

with Mason Miller where a guy just walks the park. Yeah, three walks in a row and then he gets predictable, right? I mean, he's lost his slider. He could tell he's lost a little mojo. He'd only done that two-anything, two times. Two times. Coming in to your 10th or fourth, I think, was the last time. I mean, that's, you know, I'm not saying that's the reason why, but when you lose one of your better pitches, you become a little predictable. And, you know, and a guy hitting the top of the order, hit a hitter. You made what happened? You made an interesting point. We were talking about Thai frances all that hit the wire. Yeah. And you said, you know, maybe the brewers are looking a little bit like the J's last year. Oh, no, of course. I was going to say, not only that, what about the manager deciding to put Jackson Churio in the lead-off spot for game two against a right-handed starter? Yeah. And what happens? Jackson Churio gets the extra at bat and wins the game. Yeah. Like, yeah, you watch that. And even with Mizorowski, kind of scuffling the, I mean, the podra is really didn't, they didn't, they didn't take him out, you know, take him out. Now, I know I was going to say take him out to the woodshed.

It's hard when the dude's throwing 105. Yeah. But I watch in that series, I'm thinking. Yeah, to grind through it. And that may be, may be the podra's year, you know. I'm sorry, sorry, the brewers. Yeah, well, the wire thing, I think, sort of, anyway, you know, it's, and I still don't know how that's an out. I didn't make no sense to me. The defender didn't get an out there. It was the obstruction of the things that are hanging from the roof. That's not, that's not the way it's supposed to be. You know, again, I'm rooting for the podra, I'm not going to make no bounce about it. We both are. Like the podra is a little bit more fun to watch. But the brewers might be the best team of baseball, along with the race, you know, I mean, the things the race were throwing at you the way they can beat you, the way they can hold you down, the way they can get through the middle of the order, the different arms. These managers go to like, I, listen, I got to think, I got to think the brewers have played their worst defensive, the worst defensive game they're going to play this postseason and they still want it. You know, that's how good they are because we've talked about what their M.O. is. They weren't, they weren't, they weren't that great defensively. They made some errors. But I mean, I want to be mad at Todd Tischender, but how can you?

I mean, the stuff that he's faced the first two games, I just, again, I just don't know, you know, it is now that the way they can throw to not only their strength, but your weaknesses and do it with different speeds. And you know, this different speeds are like a 92 mile an hour braking ball or a 94 mile an hour slider with an elevated 100 mile an hour fastball. Like your, your eyes and your body just can't add up to being able to throw barrel to ball. Like letting it travel and hitting it the other way, it's just not a thing anymore. And just to watch that and watch guys go man, you can actually see them thinking through it when they step out of the batter's box, which they don't have a lot of time to do it. But when they do try and step out of the batter's box to think, man, we walk through this before the game and then he actually threw it to me and because of how hard he throws and how much it breaks and how long it lasts in the, in the lane to where it's so hard to tell the difference between all those pitches. And on top of it, you're a right handed hitter and he's a right handed thrower.

I bought it. It's just something. It's crazy stuff, man. What's your level of concern with the Dodgers right now? I think it's got to be high. I mean, again, you know, the thing. Yeah, that's a much went game for the brave say when that you would think with who's throwing for the Dodgers. Yama Motors not going to be an easy get. I mean, he's going to because he's been there and done it before. I again, it's the Dodgers. It's just, you know, they'll tell Tony lineup looks kind of. Yeah, I mean, Freddie Freeman looks like you mean Freddie Freeman came out and said he got they got to figure out how to score a run without hitting the Homer. I mean, they, I didn't make one of bunch of games last year against Blue J's hitting Homer. I think all seven of their runs have come off five Homer say, you know, it's just because you lose one game. I don't think changes the kind of approach you're going to have as a lineup. They got a little old or nothing because they're getting a little older and they got a cheat. When you got a cheat at the plate to get the things, you're going to swing it stuff. You don't want to you're going to make out the way you don't want to make out. And you're not going to drive the ball to the big part of the field because you got to cheat a little bit to get the head out and try and be the guy of the spot.

So for me, I think the blue print, the braves kind of figured it out there. You get like Blake's tail three and two thirds. You get the starter out and then you'll take your chances off the sea and four or five news. I don't know if they're pants just not good enough. I think to hold down decent lineups. So if you're the braves, you grind it out. You maybe take pitches. You normally wouldn't take maybe try and fight all things. Do little things. Try and get started. You know, this is interesting hearing you say that because one of the reason the J's had success against camp. We're last year as they drove up. They drove up his pitch counter. Yeah. And I, you know, the raise. I imagine that will be their approach tonight against camp. Littler is is is try to grind. Try to problem is he throws multiple pitches for strikes. I mean, that's the problem with these. The late guys and he's in the late guy and he's. And he's and I was doing some. He's he's a different pitcher this year than he was last year too. Yeah, I mean, he's located in secondary stuff like he's unpredictable early counts. You really don't know what to look for in two strikes that elevated power.

It's just it's a fine line of his as a striker. Is it a ball? And how do I not lay off the one that's a strike that's a that's a ball. It's good luck. Any mini money mo. Yes. Yeah. White socks and guardians today at five o'clock Eastern on sports net. Chris Rose is host of baseball today in dugout discussions with John Boyn Mirias. There he is. There he is. Nice hat. What's that hat? Good sir. It's a good question. I was just googling it before or I came on because I knew that was going to be the first thing you were asked. Yeah. And I've got no idea. Huh? I've got like 75 minor league hats and I haven't worn this in a while and I was like, oh my god, he's going to ask me. I have no idea. Yeah. So I apologize. Well, at least you're honest. Kind of dangerous though. Isn't that like if you're wearing a hat and you don't know what it's. That's a dog can't be well too awful. I mean, dangerous is a relative word. I would. There are many other things that are more dangerous than not knowing what had him wearing. I can. So I like to live dangerously.

There you go. Woo. He do look how are you guys good? Doing well. We were just we were just talking about the pitching. In the play. And Mr. Barker basically said thank God the J didn't make the play. Yeah. I don't have a bill the order Chris and in this playoffs with the way the this kind of pitching is. I don't want to say you don't got no chance, but you got real close to not having a chance. Yeah, guys, it's. And if you don't hit home runs for the most part, you're up the creek. Now, I know people say, well, the brewers are near the bottom of the list in home runs, but all three of their runs on Saturday came by at the home run. Yeah, it's tough to hit this velocity. Guys, and I was just thinking about this on my morning old man walk. Is is it best for the game? Is this really what's best for the game? Now we're seeing some fun games.

There's no question about it. There's some amazing stories. This Ray Curves literally feels like come out of nowhere. You know, who was a foster child in Reno, Nevada, and had basically quit baseball was working at a 7-11 and an iMacs theater just to get some money in his pocket. And eventually a junior college baseball coach was like, look, you're left in your six three. Let's go start throwing and he has made it to the major leagues and now has started two of the last three games for the Atlanta Braves, including in the elimination game against the likes of Bryce Harper and the Phillies is pretty damn cool. That's great. But I'm just not so sure that because the batters don't have anything to any way to combat this right now. There's no way to combat all the velocity that we're seeing. And I just don't know if it's great for the sport overall. I don't know. Yeah, I, I mean, I was thinking a little bit about watching Mason Miller kind of employed yesterday.

And I was just thinking a bit about pitching in baseball and. Yeah, I, I mean, I like, I like well pitched games. I mean, I've covered three perfect games. I've seen a lot of no hitters. I've been lucky that way. But I get to the point where if it's not a no hitter, I kind of don't necessarily want a well pitched game. You know, if it's not a no hitter, give me six five. Like Dylan Seas. Look what he went through at the end of the year. No, I just, yeah, you're right. It's, I enjoy the baseball and you know, the good thing is that it's close because everybody's got good pitch. Right. But yeah, I kind of, you know, I wouldn't mind a game where we hit five home runs. You hit four and we won. Yeah, I kind of missed that. You know, that's what gets me excited. Yeah, I guess it's not so much even that. I think it's. I think it's that we loved when starters went six or seven. And it was really fun and then you'd turn it over. But now the piecing together of it.

And I don't begrudge any team for doing it. I think the white socks are genius the way that they're rolling so far through Houston and Cleveland. And I think it will actually continue. I think the braves out of necessity have done this to a mass. Triple job courtesy of Walt Weiss and his crew there in the first two games out in L.A. I guess my point is is that it's a little bit like the three point shot in the NBA that everybody can shoot now. And so it's hard for me to tell who's great at shooting. And I want to, I want to respect and revere the greatness. Everybody comes out of the bullpen throwing a hundred. I'm telling you that did not happen for the longest time. When somebody threw a hundred you were like, yeah, yeah. What are we seeing? We just saw a guy throw a hundred miles an hour. And now you're like, yeah. Oh, it's a great pie. I mean, think of the, think of the great closers we've seen and think of their quote unquote signature pitch.

I mean, a lot of times it wasn't a hundred mile in our fight. As well as Mariano's cutter. It was Trevor Hoffman. Well, Trevor Hoffman could throw a heart. I can remember cut. Shooters split. Shooters split. Yeah, I can remember hitting coaches telling me before I walk on the index circle, you better get it going. This guy's got up or 90s fastball. I can still hear him saying it. Now I'm assuming they're just like, hey, just don't even worry about that control what you can control. Hey, Chris, one ask you, this may be sacrilegious, but watching the, watching the Guardians, and a particular Jose Ramirez, you know, as I've said, my favorite, but I love watching Jose Ramirez. Is there any thought given to maybe moving him around the lineup a little bit? If you're doing that, you're Stephen vote. Who are you going to move up? Yeah, I mean, that's. Yeah, I know if you want to replace the quarterback, you got to have somebody that can throw it. And so here's the problem. Like Jose, even in his MVP caliber seasons, has never been an October player.

I hate to say it. He just hasn't been go look at his mark. Really, if you there's one home run, I can remember that he hit against Tampa Bay as a right handed hitter to right center. I think we won the game to one maybe something like that, but there aren't many defining moments of Jose's October career. So yes, there's a thought about that, but I just don't, I don't know who else you would move up there. You wouldn't put a guy like Bazzana up there. Joe Adele, maybe Joe Adele. Joe Adele. Joe Adele. At four point, she's I know, but just put as many balls in play in the playoffs as I have. I'm not moving Joe Adele up. I mean, what swing and miss earlier. We're just guessing. Yeah, we are. Just like glad you little. Look, the teams that are, and there's a real thin margin of error. We've always known that with playoff baseball. That's why it's so exciting. I mean, that's why I just love October. I love everything about it. But if you've got to hit some home runs, we talked about you got to have some pop and Chicago's got it.

You know, they're not just this cute little story. They've led the American League and run scored. They've led the American League and walks their top five, I believe, in home runs in all baseball. That is a, that is that is the best lineup remaining in the American League. And it's not going to shock me if they somehow work their way through this thing. Look, they also have the benefit of the schedule here. They went at the end of the regular season, which ended what a week ago yesterday. They went off day, win, win over Houston, off day, off day, win over Cleveland, off day, game against Cleveland. So they can use the same exact formula and unless Houston, which had its chance and it didn't work. And now Cleveland, if they can't figure out a way to make Will Vennable pay for marching out to the mound as much as he does, or make him pay for putting Grant Taylor out there for, you know, three innings in one game and four innings in another,

he's going to keep doing it and he should. Yeah, it's insane. The white socks have led at the end of 24, the inning so far in the playoffs, which is a lot. Yeah. That's a lot. That's what that is. Yeah, that's going to win you a lot of games. Yeah, I've never. In all the years watching baseball, seen a team win a game with scoring zero runs. Well, that's a good one. No. No. Well, it will be fun to see if the guardians, okay, if not Ramirez, is there a name you, you, you, you poo, pooed my Joe Adele thing. You jumped all over that. Is there a name other than those two guys that you think has to step up if those other two guys aren't doing anything? So no, it is Joe Adele. He has to do it. You know, he has to. That doesn't mean I would move him. I'm just saying, but you're right. It's the one that has to do it because their offense did significantly improve when they made the trade for him because he does crush left handed pitching.

Well, today the white socks are going to start Anthony K. Part of the reason was because they thought that Stephen vote was then going to counter and put David Fry in the starting lineup. They said screw it. We'll just deal with Nathaniel Lowe who can't hit lefties, but God forbid you put a right in there and he's going to mash and he actually did that the other day. Yeah. He put together a couple of really good at bats, but they're going to say we're going to live and die with this guy. And if he has to face lefties throughout the day, so be it. And Joe Dell's got to be Jose Ramirez and Joe Adele are the guys that do crush and on Hill Martinez can hit lefties too. He's a switch. If those guys don't come through today, then Vennables going to keep doing his thing and the guards are going to be down to nothing heading back to Chicago. Well, I hope not because I want it to go five. You know, I'm rooting for the white socks. People do the white socks got a little feel like the blue chase head last year. Totally. You know, why not? Like nobody's, you know, it's we're going to just show up and kind of do our thing and maybe it works out that way, but I hope it is a good series. I want to flip over to the Yankees and race.

Is there the race are still the best team in the American lake just everything they can throw at you. The things they can do defensively. The Yankees are for me anyway, this just me on the outside looking to have to put more balls and play. If they do that, I think they'll have a chance. What do you say? They did that against against the Red Sox. They looked totally different in those two games against the Red Sox. And they had the last four months of the season that they played without air and judge. Totally different. They were a bottom six offensive team in baseball, not the American League in all of baseball. They couldn't score runs. They couldn't put the ball in play. They couldn't move runners. And then they did it beautifully in outscoring the Red Sox at 18 to two. Now they did it primarily against the Red Sox bullpen, right? The starters. I thought very much held their own Peyton tolly pitched very well. I was hitting go pitch for pitch with but he was really good. And Sonny Gray was excellent as well and should have been given the chance to get out of that inning. And they didn't do it that way.

But. Tampa's got a feel for this man. Yeah. Pay just to they don't give a damn that they're the fifth most talked about team in the American League East. They just want to keep winning. Seriously, they are. They are. Yeah. They are. And. You know, it's funny. We always talked about. Alex and thought was always used to tell us that anytime the race made a trade, he would always look at the end. I wouldn't see there's so and so and so and so and so. And I remember the day that Drew Rasmussen trade was made. It was Andrew Rasmussen and he's turned into. You know, I mean, Kevin was talking about his tunneling and they had an excellent graphic during the game. I mean, that was a classic example of tunneling. It was like everything was in that little teeny tiny circle. It was it was remarkable. I'm I'm with you. I just think the race of. They can win in many ways. Ugly. Pretty. Hit. Hedding.

I'll pitch you. And you know what else is it? I think and do it in many different ways. I maybe I. I mean, we've seen the race have playoff games at home. And it I mean, I know that it was a sellout. But even when they when they've played teams like the Yankees and Red Sox, it's generally been 50 50. And I thought the crowd at the top was much more pro-raise than than I've heard in a while. Like when the Yankees are there during the regular season, there's a lot of New Yorkers down there. And I thought there was a real and we're going to talk to Brian Anderson about it. I thought there's a real like buzz there. Really? Like it came through in TV. I thought so too. I think tonight will be the real telltale there because I think Schlitler's going to shove. Yeah. And I wouldn't I think that. I mean, the guy is thrown three playoff games as an ERA under one. He struck out 24 batters and he's walked one. And he he basically MF the crowd. He said, yeah, technically it's a road game, but I don't think so.

There's going to be more Yankees pants. He does not mind talking mess at all. He is. He doesn't care what anybody thinks of him because he is so confident. I mean, he's cocky. Let's call him what he is. He's cocky. Yeah. And there's a lot of people around the league who would love to see him get his onions kicked in. But it's not going to happen. I mean, if I'm hit, not he can be cocky all he wants is not like to do that. Right. Yeah. I mean, he's awesome. I do worry about the matchup tonight from this standpoint. Freddie Peralta has in the playoffs has given up a lot of home runs. Seven and 33 plus innings. That's a much higher home run rate than throughout his career. So that's the, you know, that's one thing that you can count on with the Yankees. But he's a Ray now. He's a Ray now. They may have figured something out. Maybe you know, they may put him in the underground, the underground laboratory and they took his arm apart and put it back together and put some electrodes in the brain and a way they go. I think this is a series that will make its way back to St. Pete for game five.

And I, I think that'll be really fun. I picked the, the, the, uh, raise at the beginning of the series and I'll stick with it. Yeah, I think, oh, game five back there. Yeah, me too. I picked the Yankees. Oh, I do want to ask you about the pod raise. Uh, yeah, if the podris gets swept, is that, is that, uh, is that a bad year for the podris? It was a memorable year. I mean, really, the run they went on in the second half because I don't know if you remember that the first two and a half months, they were dreadful. Oh, yeah. Yeah. And there were certain people. They were calling for them to trade Mason Miller and a few other people. Yeah. And that did not happen and they stuck with it and they turned it around beautifully. Um, you know, I, I don't think it's a bad year. I think it's a, it would be an extremely disappointing finish because look at the, look at the ways they've lost these first two games. If you had told pod raise fans, then in game one, they'd be tied going into the seventh inning. And then have the lead going into the eighth inning with the ball and Mason Miller's hand.

You would say, what is the series score coming back to San Diego for game three on Tuesday? You'd say to nothing, but pod raise. Yeah. That's what you would say because that's the perfect scenario for them, right? They're built on a six headed monster out of that bullpen. So if you're tied late, that's actually like leading the game for them. Well, they end up having William Contreras in a home run off of Morahon. And so Milwaukee ends up winning that crazy game with the roof. And then on Sunday, Mason Miller, they asked him to get six outs, which they did not have him do all year. They asked him to throw 40 plus pitches, which he did not do all year. He ended up walking three guys in an inning, which he did not do all year. And that is why October of baseball is the best. Yeah, I would think the the pod raise postseason, if they lose and the Dodgers lose, I think the pod raise, that will be a disaster because there'll be people in San Diego going, my God, the braves got rid of the Dodgers forest and the door was, the door was wide.

I don't know if you get swept when when, you know, Tatees is better and Machado looks like Machado. People hate him again because he's been really good. You have that bullpen you just mentioned. Like, I don't know, man, it's like I should feel different about it. Like I would, I should be mad at him. I don't think that, um, anger's a, I think disappointment. Yeah. As in a missed opportunity, but I think you could say that with a lot of the eight teams that are left. I don't think there is such a behemoth right now. Even the Dodgers, who's lineup looks old. I said this at the beginning of the divisional round. I said that lineup looked old at the end of the year. I think he bets had made a nice charge the last six weeks, but they've gotten squat out of Otani, who is not, he's not playing banged up like Dave Roberts said. He's injured, folks. Yeah. He's going to have, it wouldn't surprise me if the guy has multiple surgeries in the office, he's in a correct way to ails him. Freddie Freeman, although he swung the bat really well yesterday, has battled a lot of stuff in September. Yeah.

You know, Will Smith was coming back from an injury and has just looked so, so at best. Max months, he's a dude. Yes. Max, like it was funny. I was talking with my son the last night. He goes, I think they're going to retire Max months. He's jersey. And I was like, what do you then went on? Oh, it's a great call. His postseason number is absolutely. Oh, man. He might be on to something. Yeah. You know, the Yacht Rose. Good job. Yeah, that is all this great. And you know, the best player for the podries in September, one of the best players was Kyle Tucker. And that was. You know, the way I always look at it is, who do you not want to see up if you're an opposing fan? Monseman would be that guy for me. Yeah, Monseman, Freddie Friedman or this отпって, yeah, I absolutely. Yeah, you dread that. Chris, we're going to let you. Let's try strawberry. Thanks for doing this. Yeah, yeah. Did we ever figure out what the dog was? No, no, I did. I feel arrogant about it. I tried. Oh, no, I. Yeah. But it's a good cap anyhow. It is a good cap. I think. I think that it is the alternate version of the.

It's a toad. I think it's a- Not the red thing, the other thing. The red thing is a tongue. I know, not the red thing. There's something in it, I think it's mouth. Maybe that'll help. That's a tongue. Oh, what's beside the tongue? Look, a tooth. Look, is it a big tooth? Yeah, it's a tooth. Oh, it's got a baseball in it's mouth. Okay, so apologize. Both of you. Apologize. Uh-oh, we have- All you think we did out. Our crack's research staff said it could be the Hudson Valley retrievers. Yeah, I think that's, I think that's right. There you go. Do you see your staffs on crack? Yeah, no, I said our crack staff. Not our staffers. Not these one, man. Not this one. This one. Come back and went. Chris, thanks for doing that. Thank you, everybody. Appreciate it. Be well. Go Guardians. Hey, there you go. There it is. Bye, guys. Take care. Chris Rosas, host of baseball today and dug out discussions on John Boyd. How did you? I didn't mean that, Guardians. But go Guardians. I didn't mean that. I didn't mean that.

White socks are kind of, they are fun. They are. They're celebrations are awesome. Yes. I mean, they are. They are awesome. They are good. No more than no props. I mean, I told you what I'd like to see. Ever since I've seen the kids come out and throw the water on Max. Yeah, straw. I think you should, I think that's what should be done now. No, no more, no more, Vlad. I don't even know if you're, you're, that's legal or not. I don't know the answer to that, but I like that idea better than actually seeing grown men throw it on other grown men. How about you? You know what you should do. What's that you know what you should do? Every day you should have a giveaway with season's ticket holders. I think that's, I think that's a two seasons ticket holders, but should get the, should be able to come out. I would think that I'm, I bet that's not legal though. That's probably not. No, no, no. You can drop it on your toe or something. There's so many things and go wrong with that. I'm, you asked for it. But I like the, I like, I think that's more fun. I think it is. And I'm tired of seeing Vlad.

He do you, I'm a neck camp, you know, man. I like to see him poured on himself at once. You know what? The dude is at home working on his swing right now. Oh, no, no, he's not. Let's not have rest. Dude, at home working on his swing. I will not, I will not put up with any Vlad. He's landed. He is not. The season's over. He is chilling. We've all turned the page. I need just rest. I'm going to come back better next year. That's just not necessary. He played too much. That's not nice. Two years ago. Brian Anderson is a raised TV analyst. A raise and Yankees. That was not great. That was an entertaining for no, that, okay. Well, that goes to my whole point though, but it was a no hitter for a while. And I don't mind low pit, low scoring games if it's a no hitter. This one's going to be quite a, so there can be some heavy lift. Well, you see Kevin Cash over there too with that. He was about to pull his head off. He was like, just please give up. Please give up. Brian Anderson joined us next. This is Blair and Barker on Sportsnet 590, the fan of Sportsnet.

We mentioned two games on the network tonight. White socks and guardians, first pitch at five o'clock. And at 8 p.m. Cam Schliitler in the New York Yankees against the raise. I mean, I think I can plug the game that way with the race leading that series. One game to nothing. Brian Anderson is a raised TV analyst. He joins us now on Blair and Barker. There he is. By buddy. How you doing, man? I'm just asking how you're doing. You were asking about the soon to be full tree that will then morph into a Christmas tree at some point. Never turned it down. Yes, been there all year. Yes. And we decorated it for spring. We decorated it for summer. Just took that down. We've got full decorations that'll go up and then Christmas after Thanksgiving. You know what? I kind of like that. I don't like that.

I've heard of that. You came up that on your own. I like that. I said you guys some pictures. It did turn out pretty awesome. So we've got everything stored away in bins and will probably just rinse repeat. Well, I like that. I do. I don't mind that at all. It's different. It is. I'm actually trying to know. No. My wife wouldn't. I don't think she should go for that. No, I don't think she should go for that. I do what I'm told. I don't think she should go. I don't think she should go for that. I don't think she should. I don't think she should go for that. I don't think she should go for that. That's. Yeah, we're both the same way. We're. It's a key to a successful marriage. Just do what you're told. Shut up and do what you're told. Hey. What should I expect from Freddie, Perol to tonight? Well, I would like to say what he did his last six or seven starts with the race. I thought it was really interesting in breaking Freddie Perol to down because. You know, obviously he goes to the mats and there are high expectations for him. He's going to have to go back to the New York and just didn't put together the season that they were anticipating. And certainly that he wasn't anticipating.

And the race made that trade thinking that they could, you know, make an adjustment here or there, a tweak here or there. And get the best version of him back. And so that's exactly on, you know, exactly what happened. So they made the trade. And I think they wanted to do two things. I think they wanted to because when he went to New York and. Hear me out on this. I don't know why this would happen. I don't know if it was Freddie. I don't know if it was the Metz organization. If it was a combined decision. But when Freddie Perol to goes to the Metz, a season before with Milwaukee, he went 17 and six with a 2.7 earned run average. Pretty good, huh? So all of a sudden he goes to New York. Arm angle comes down five degrees. And he shortens his stride and his extension by four to five inches. I don't know why that happened, but it did. And I think it affected, you know, his stuff, his confidence, obviously, doesn't help playing in New York. If you don't get off to a great start. So, you know, the, the rays were then, you know,

bring him in with the idea of we want to get a little bit more extension. On him. And we want to have him use the change up more because the rays as we've talked all season long, the radius as a staff. They love the change up as a group. I mean, if you throw the change up, you're going to throw it more often. If you don't throw a change up, you're going to start to throw a change up. And so that's exactly what happened with Freddie. They started to get his extension back out to normal levels. And the change up usage went from 2021 percent with New York up to 33 percent. His first four or five starts with the rays. They were you're kind of trying to get some traction trying to get himself ready. You know, I mean, to make that next step and get comfortable with his new team. And that's exactly what he did. He got a little bit better each time out. And then by the end, he's your American League pitcher of the month for September. And his last six, I maybe even seven. I'm not even sure what the number was. But last six or seven starts.

He had a sub one earned run average and was just absolutely magnificent. And that's why the rays are, I wouldn't even say rolling the dice. That's why they feel comfortable going with him in game two at home. It's interesting just reading Kevin Cash from one of his media availability. He's talking about Freddie Peralta. And interesting. He said he kind of thought he was a little vulnerable when he came over to Tampa. And as a result, was really open to whatever, whatever Kyle Schneider, whatever the rays were talking about. And it was just, yeah, it is interesting because. And I saw an interview with Freddie. He said, he said the same thing. It's just like, I think it's one of those things where sometimes you come over to a new environment, Brian. And it's just it all meshes together. We don't know why that necessarily happens. But everybody, it's just, it's the perfect place for you. And it really seems like that's the thing with him. Yeah. And I will tell you this, Freddie's a great kid.

You spend any time just around him and watch how he interacts with people, watch how he interacts with the media, watch how he interacts with his teammates. And you know that he is a high character guy. And so, you know, and then you, you know, you combine that with the fact that the rays, this is probably of all of my years of being in this game as a player and now a broadcaster. And I've been a part of some really close knit teams. I don't know if I have been around or a part of a team that's as close as this one. And those are not empty words. I would love it. You know, everybody wants to talk about the, you know, camaraderie and the chemistry. This team is different. You know, they, they all went together as a team for dinner, you know, before opening day. You know, that's not unheard of, of course. But then we had a day, you know, played the game, then had a day off. Well, they did it again. Before you know it, this team in August, you'd have an all day in another city. And 20 guys would be downstairs getting ready to go out to dinner together.

I mean, it's this close native of a group that I have ever been around. And you talked to the people downstairs and they tell you the same thing. We've never seen it like this. Everybody playing for each other. A very welcoming group. Everybody pulling for each other. And so it was the perfect environment for Freddie to walk into, especially coming out of New York, where the year wasn't going very well for him. It certainly wasn't going very well for the team. You can imagine what the media scrutiny is like in New York. When the Mets once again with that big bloated payroll aren't getting anything done. And then he slides into this culture that is the raise. And it could not. It really could not have been a more perfect fit. Took him a little bit to get some traction. But once he did, he's been dominant. Okay, B.A. What's the lot I have to do against Cam tonight? What's the approach? There's no secrets. I mean, I know what he's going to do. How do you, I guess, beat him to the spot? Would be the quote. I think that, yeah, listen, I, I think that's what I'm going to do. I, listen, I, I think that that, uh, it, it, it, not that any matchup is good for Cam

Schlippler because of how dominant we have seen him be. Uh, and especially in big games, he's a big game guy. You know, what you wonder sometimes, you know, if, if guy's going to be a big game pitcher, well, Cam Schlippler has all the earmarks of a big game pitcher. I think the raised lineup, they have to trust what they do well. You know, they do a great job of limiting strikeouts. They're going to make him work for strikeouts. They move the baseball. They put the baseball in play. I think they're going to try to small ball them. I think you try to, you know, get it not not that you're trying to get into his head, but you're certainly going to lay down some bumps. You're going to make him feel his position, make those infielders, make plays. And I think that that's their best way to do it. And if he makes a mistake out over the plate, the race have some guys that can hit some home runs. You know, they were not up there at the top of the American living in the homers. But guess what? Since the first of July through the end of the season, they were. So that was part of their game that really started to come on the last three months or so. And then you combine that with the fact that they will limit strikeouts, few strikeouts in Major League Baseball, most sacrifice months, most butt hits, most infield hits.

They're very aggressive on the base pass. I think you'll see that if they're able to get some runners out there, they're going to be very aggressive. They got Brady Williams as their third base coach. And if he is holding you up, your probability of scoring is zero. Because if there's anything, if there's a point to he's sending you, he's as aggressive as they come. And so I think that those are all of the things that you have to do against the guy like Cam Schletler, or any ace, you know, in a moment like this, because the thought of you going out and putting together two, three, four hits in an inning to score a couple of runs, probably isn't going to happen. So you're going to have to maybe you get a mistake out over the plate and you pop it. Maybe he gives you a walk and you move the runner. That's what they're going to have to do. And they are the best in Major League Baseball. I mean, the Brewers will probably argue with me on that. But they are the best in Major League Baseball and playing that small bowl. And so that's what they're going to have to do. Yeah, Brian, watching the game on Saturday, I was watching Liam Hicks and local guy,

a guy who was with the Marlins where they were calling pitches. Now he comes to Tampa, very advanced pitching organization. I think we can all agree. And I'm wondering if I'm just wondering about how he has handled the transition from going from an organization where pitches are being called from the dugout to the raise. Where as I said, you know, you've got it's very intricate. It's very intellectual. And here you are catching a no hitter for much of game one of your first playoff game. I just thought that was really impressive. Extremely. And the thing is is that, you know, even in broadcasting all of the games when he came over, I didn't even see a learning curve. I mean, it seemed like he really hit the ground running, has a real good idea of what each guy wants to accomplish, how he wants to accomplish, and is really good at reading what's working that night, and maybe what's not working.

What do we need to nurse along? And hopefully it clicks in later in the game. In the meantime, we're going to have to shift gears a little bit and maybe throw more of the breaking ball until the change up comes around. I mean, there's just he has been seamless. He did get some help Nick Fortes. They were teammates with the team from South Florida. And so they had spent some time together and Nick really did a great job of bringing him up to speed as they do the crash course as any catcher is going to have to learning a new staff. And then you creditly am himself for the work that he put in behind the scenes. After the game, before the game, on a day off doing all of those things, picking the brain of all of these different pictures, how do you like your target? How do you like the sequence? How do you try to use one pitch to set up another? The rays are very big on complimentary pitches, pitches that you can pair together. And he just did a masterful job of making it look very seamless. I'm sure it wasn't. I'm sure there was a lot of times where he's thinking what to do there,

but you never saw that. You never felt that. And he's made it look as easy as you can. Okay, I put you on a spot a little bit. Give me a pick to click. A涂 was the last guy in the last in the last game. Is there somebody swing you like? Somebody's approach that you might like against Cam that you think could, you know, throw out the race, swing a couple of times against that dude. Well, with a guy like Schlitler, the first knee jerk is Chandler Simpson, because he's a guy that's difficult to strike out. Does a great job of limiting, you know, swing a mess. And therefore, obviously that's going to lead to fewer strikeouts. He moves the baseball. The Yankees defensively, they may have made a lot of mistakes. We've seen it against the race, especially the style that we talked about just, you know, a little bit ago, the style that the race play where they catch the Yankees out of the position, not covering the base, not throwing to the right base. So he's a guy that, that, you know, that, that comes to mind, but that's too easy. I'm going to go with Victor Mesa Jr.

Well, how Victor Mesa Jr. I'm going to tell you something. This kid traded for him kind of quiet, platooning all the sudden with some injuries. He got more playing time and I'll tell you what, I was so impressed with him. You know, the batting average, I don't know what he ended up to 4250 in that range. Maybe, but the last month and a half, two months of the season, it was around 27280. He started to use the field a little bit more and not be so pull conscious. He's gotten good power, especially when you look at home runs per plate appearance. It's up there. And I just think that he's a guy that, that is going to thrive in the spotlight. And so that's going to be, yeah, Chandler would be my knee jerk just because of his style of play. What we talked about against Cam, but I think Victor Mesa Jr. does something special tonight. And guess what? It may be defensively because he is, I'm telling you, he's as smooth as they come in the outfield. Majority of the playing time obviously came in right,

but he is as smooth as they've come. I mean, I like to watch games on the monitor up in the booth because I want to see pitch tight, pitch location. And then when that ball is put into play, my eyes find the field. Okay. And then I just, you know, how does this play going to unfold? And there have been plenty of times where balls come off the bat to right, right center. And I am thinking to myself, ooh, that is trouble. And I pick up. And there is Victor Mesa Jr. running it down with ease. And I'm like, hmm. And it happens over and over and over again. And I'm like, this kid is special on top of the fact that he has a cannon. And we saw that the other night when Austin Wells thought it was a good idea with two outs to try to stretch the double into a triple. Yeah, that was a, yeah. That was an interesting decision by, I mean, with two outs, you haven't had a bass runner, basically, a couple of walks. And you finally get your first hit, you're a catcher, two outs, one run game. It was one of the strongest right field arms in the game.

I could not believe what I was seeing, but that's what we have seen the Yankees do against the raise all year. Big mistakes. I would think if you were a pitcher and you lose the no hitter, that's a good way to do it. That's it. That's just about the best way to do it. How did you face the next guy and work out of a jab? Yeah, he's himself out there. You were running off the field. I just lost no hitter, but we're winning. That's funny. Before I let you go, once the last time you knocked the dust off that sweatshirt, I mean, that's a little fratts, a little front running. First place, you knocked them the dust off that time. You're going to love this. So I'm a Cleveland guy. Yeah. I grew up 45 miles east of Cleveland. I've been a Brown span forever. They lay the egg. It's a weak one against Jacksonville. And I'm thinking, my good Lord, they got blown out of the stadium. This looks like, I mean, could they win a couple of games? Then they come here to Tampa, knock off the box, and then they go home Carolina and knock off Carolina. This past Thursday night, Steelers, knock, I'm like, who are these guys?

And this is a matter of fact, I haven't knocked the dust off yet. I haven't even worn it. I just stepped on the front today. That's all I say. There you go. It got ordered a few days ago, and it just came in today. That's awesome. God bless you for your honesty. God bless you for your honesty. Thanks for doing this. Yeah, you're going to have fun, man. All right, boys, you have to take care. Always a pleasure to talk to you guys. See you, boy. It's Brian Anderson raised TVNs. That is a solid bod. Because that's the old school. Yeah, it's pretty good. Yeah. Yeah, yeah. They're their first plays, man. Well, I love sports. Ah, come on. It's like, yeah, look at my brother. What's the last time you even got the wearier sweatshirt? You know, me, I'm not. Where were we brought? The Colts playing this year. I had done stuff. I haven't done stuff. They're about as bad as Broncos. Oh, Lee, between them and the Hokies this way, it's just bad. The only thing I ever see when I go on social media involving the Colts is the owners and the sideline asking the head coach about it. I'm going to ask you guys, what's the best way to do this? I'm going to ask you guys. I'm going to ask you guys. I'm going to ask you guys. What's the worst social media involving the Colts is the owners and the sideline asking the head coach about his play calling? Yeah. Which I kind of like.

Yeah. The only bad thing, the only, the, the, the, what, what makes it even worse is whatever my wife text me and says, hey, can you, can you look, I'm, see what the score. The, the chief says and you know what she has it on her phone because she follows. And it gives her updates every time they score. I tell you what, it's like no one, the Broncos lost and no one the chiefs are winning. It's like life is so much better not giving her ads out. What funs. I mean, a lot of fun less aggravation in my life. You learn to eliminate the things that aggravate you. That's so fun. Do you hear what I said? As you get older, you learn to eliminate the things that aggravate you. That's funny. I don't know what that feels like. Uh, anyhow, uh, your thoughts on these games tonight. Cam Schletler, Freddie Peralta. Uh, uh, it seems as if. Well, it seems as if the idea is to try to drive up the pitch count. Yeah, I'm not sure exactly how you do that with this guy. It's kind of stuff. I mean, you send her a letter. You're going to have to swing it something that you like to swing at and he can get, you

know, the problem with Cam is he can get you out in zone. Mm-hmm. That's that's prop like it's very hard to run up pitch cows just unless you don't have to feel for a pitch and, you know, you can lay off of that and force him into a zone. You want to force him into that. That's kind of how you do. But he hasn't been that way basically all year. So I think it's going to be really close. It's race. Rays are really good at making adjustments. I think they'll do enough offensively. They'll put enough pressure. They'll put enough pressure on the defense that'll get themselves in trouble. Uh, I do think the Yankee's a win just because Cam's throwing the other game up rooting for the White Sox. You know, I want a good series. I like to see the White Sox winning five. But you got Gavin Williams throwing for the Guardian. So that's not going to be easy. Get addius. Yeah, it's just, you know, yeah, how long can that last the White Sox just running out of herd of pitchers? I, I'm not exactly sure about that. And in case he's starting to game in a playoff, I, what? It just, it's very hard for me to buy into that. So that's just why that series for me. I just don't really want to watch it. I have to. And I'm going to be watching.

But we'll both be watching it. Don't pay attention. We'll both be watching it. We'll talk about it tomorrow. Enjoy the baseball.
