Early in the week, I was not given Penn State much of a chance to beat Northwestern. And now I'm starting to come around to the idea that the Niddy Lions could bounce back here. Your host is always and thank you so much for joining me here. Final thoughts ahead of Penn State versus Northwestern. I think this is going to be a close game. I also want to talk about a recruiting update here. Penn State is still targeting a prior commit in five star running back. Come on spell. I'll get to that in the upcoming segment because that's unrelated to Northwestern. But starting up with Northwestern here. I did not have much confidence in Penn State leading up to this game.

2:06And after seeing the injury report and what Northwestern is dealing with. They are missing key contribute. I'm talking not just oh these are rotational guys know serious contributors on both offense and defense. And of course that's going to play in a Penn State's favor. I know the Niddy Lions are missing Kobe Howard and potentially Daria sticks right. He's questionable. He's questionable going into this game. So he could be fully available. He could be limited in some capacity. You definitely want him playing in some capacity. But I think there's going to be a lot of points in this game relative to what Penn State Northwestern typically would be right. The totals around 45 and a half that the way that the lines are. It projects this game to be Penn State 24 Northwestern 21, which I think is a fair score. But I'm anticipating more points based on the recent development. And why I think Penn State now has a much better chance much better chance than myself. I think some fans have been giving Penn State credit for that this is going to be a close game one way or another.

3:08You cannot dismiss the fact that it's the grand opening of Northwestern's brand new stadium. It is a shorter week 24 hours makes a ton of difference Northwestern gets an extra data prepare for this game. And it's a good coaching staff David Braun and Chip Kelly on this staff. The offense is so much better than it's been for Northwestern years past. But that's what's different about this team now is you probably think oh, they're defensive jug or not. The they'll play mistake free football and they do, but it's now more condensed to the offensive side of the football. If you can believe that that's the chip Kelly effect. You might not like him as an NFL coach because I know I have eagle fans that listen to this podcast. But chip Kelly is a much better college offensive coordinator. And he's turned this Northwestern offense into a team that can they score it will right are they going to be elite. No, but they can move the football very efficiently. So let's talk about some of these injuries for Northwestern. They are going to potentially be without and the two players are doubtful.

4:11One is definitively out for this game. Three key defensive backs. Guys that obviously defend against the past, right. But Northwestern's run defense is is not good. They're they're bad. They're almost giving up 200. It's one 99.3. They're decimal points away from giving up 200 yards on the ground per game. And then you have those defensive backs that are very active in trying to over commit to stop the run. So now you lose three of those guys. These aren't just rotational safety corner. These are legit players on Northwestern's defense that rack up a lot of tackles are good and coverage reliable and coverage. It means that Penn State can have a balanced attack Penn State's going to run the football. They're going to run 12 personnel and they're going to have a much easier time doing that because Northwestern's run defense is bad. And injury to insult with those three defensive backs potentially all missing most likely all all missing.

5:14It allows Penn State to do what they want to do. They want to be physical. They want to run the football. They just want to be ahead of schedule. They want to use the ground game to set the tone and then use play action and work the football to chase so well bread. Eskull sin. Obviously Kobe Howard when he returns, but for this game, Ben Braimer so well, Eskull sin, Birkel anybody else that's going to factor in Z Robinson. Right. James Peoples should have it. If he gets to 95 yards fine, you can hold me accountable, but I'm expecting him to go off for over 100 yards. I think James Peoples can have over 100 yards. I think the team, a quint Martin should have a good game Carson Hanson. How many carries does Cam Wallace get? I think all running backs, all of them can have a nice night, but James Peoples is now in my mind the feature back. He's proven that Penn State has made it clear they wants a true RB one. This is the perfect setup for Penn State and James Peoples to have that kind of game.

6:16And which gives Penn State a greater chance if you can control the pace of the game, you can control the time possession. You can keep the football away from Northwestern. Let's talk about Northwestern's offense. Chip Kelly, great OC has made Aiden Childs look like the college prospect he originally was because he struggled at Oregon State is struggled at Michigan State. Now look what happens when you get great coaching. Much better quarterback efficient doesn't turn the ball over corrected so many mistakes that he. He had over the course of his career. And now Childs looks like a legitimate big 10 QB. They're able to run the football offensive line is okay. It's not great, but again, that's what a a great OC can do is you you roll blocking you roll the plays. You get Childs out of the pocket. You can do things to cover up for the offensive line that is again, they're fine. They're okay. But Penn State's past rush. Okay. So Northwestern doesn't really run the ball. Like they won't run over you.

7:16They can they can move, but it's through the air. They hit explosives through the air. And that's why Darius Dixon is so important in this game. I'm expecting points because the Penn State's going to be able to move the ball fairly easily, right? Easy, but relative. They're going to have a they're going to look so much better than they did against Wisconsin, even on a short week. The matchup just permits it. But Northwestern is able to go punch for punch in a sense. So Penn State's going to be able to move the football, but it's it's really up to Dantlein's defense to be able to outskim Chip Kelly, which is not going to be easy. Northwestern is missing one of its key tight ends. He had 140 yards against Indiana. That is that is a reliable target and then some for them. He is out for this game. So it just it just takes Northwestern's offense and then makes them a little more condensed. You funnel the football to a couple of key wide receivers, Griffin Wilde is a name that maybe some Penn State fans remember because he played. He had a great game last year against Penn State. And that's the reason that one of the reasons they lost in Northwestern.

8:20He's still there. Aiden Giles is efficient and they can move the ball through the air. So when the when the football when you're passing a lot and you get these explosives. Means points are going to go up on the board. This was this is going to be a one score game. I'm thinking somewhere in the neighborhood of 27 to 24. I would like to see Penn State come out on top. I could easily see Northwestern. Hey, a turnover or you know, just sometimes the way the ball bounces. The grand opening of a stadium in college football does matter that you got to account you got a factor in some points for that in the favor of Northwestern. It's it's Penn State's first big 10 road game. So it's a coin flip. It's truly a coin flip who comes out on top. But I can tell you this much one score game back and forth easily entertaining spooky things could happen here early in October with this stadium grand opening. So we'll see I say 27 24. I would like to think Penn State comes out on top. But I've been picking Northwestern throughout the week.

9:25I still want to stick with that prediction. It's going to it's going to end up in heartbreak for somebody, whether that's Northwestern in the first game in the new stadium or Penn State going on the road and trying to find a way to bounce back after that ugly Wisconsin game. I want to talk a little bit about recruiting again, just some thoughts to wrap up the week here and Penn State still targeting. Kim on spell they're not giving up you know who else isn't giving up James Franklin and Virginia Tech will talk about Kim on spell and if he would actually flip away from Georgia to anywhere. Because there is one school that thinks they can pull it off. We'll talk about it next year on Lockdown Netany lines. Five star running back key month spell program changer I I am glad I'm glad that rivals and 24 seven have said hey Penn State's not giving up. What does that actually look like okay it means that the coaching staff because they'd be stupid not to stay in contact with spells representation his family again Matt Campbell's a very relationship driven guy so the the key month spells father reportedly said that hey Penn states in contact community constant communication with me that they that weekly they just they check in they ask how we're doing and they you don't want to burn a bridge okay and key month spell with so interesting about this recruitment is that committed to Penn State and James Franklin originally

13:48committed and said well he was unsure he didn't know if he was all in with the nitty lines and eventually when Franklin got fired he everybody decommitted we know how that went that's not the point here it's the fact that spell seemed like he was close to recommitting to Penn State under Matt Campbell. Oh but it didn't materialize what what fell through there you can ask around and try to figure that out there isn't one definitive answer right Georgia is a legit program that's where he's committed right now okay so it might have just been hey Georgia. Was had the better pitch at the end of the day then Penn State or could have been something that Penn State. Yeah was it was it NIL right that's that's what I mean to each their own on on who you ask either way Georgia. Is where he's committed to and their leading but Penn State's not giving up James Franklin and Virginia Tech aren't giving up and Penn State doesn't have a reason to give up because again the they were so close rivals in 24 seven had a projection in for spell to end up at Penn State under Matt Campbell before Georgia ultimately got his commitment so the nitty lines absolutely should continue to pursue they program changer like I said a guy that could come in and start right away as a freshman and would be an instant impact player not just oh you got to rotate with him he could be the future back right out of the gate as a freshman at a lot of places.

15:15Georgia I don't know the running back room so maybe to be determined about about Georgia but at a lot of places spells getting carries right out of the gate as an R. B. 1 or a co starter if you will James Franklin's probably making the same pitch hey you were committed to me once upon a time. Why don't you come to Virginia Tech there's an opportunity for you to start right away get playing time right away and we'll try to get you to the NFL as quickly as possible. You want to know the other school that believes that Penn State or excuse me that a keyman spell could end up there it's not Penn State of course they're confident but the team that's overly confident per reports is USC. Oh they think they can get the pencil vania kid over to Los Angeles okay well they would have to set up a visit for them there's really there isn't definitive traction yet Lincoln Riley in USC are just very confident reportedly okay that's that's right. Okay that's that's rivals in 24 seven saying hey USC if if Kim on spells going to flip anywhere away from Georgia it's USC.

16:19We'll see we'll see right but USC USC has been ultra aggressive with N. I. L. so we don't know at the end of the day. Keyman spell keeps reaffirming his commitment to Georgia Georgia seems pretty confident about where things stand so in Penn State's case in anybody's case I don't know that this materializes so what does that mean for the N. I. I'm just starting back right. I'll just took a visit to Penn State and he has a return visit setup for the N. I.

17:21Because I see all the the jargon about oh well he's going to commit to Ohio State that's his home state school and that very well might be the case he might be a buck I threw him through the roading doesn't always work out that way where hey he wouldn't set up a return visit if he wasn't seriously interested in Penn State where Ohio State does have a tangible advantage is they don't have a running back in this class of 2027 as far as I'm concerned. And Penn State does have to Odo I don't know where Jordan Hall stands as far as being R. B. one or being a second running back and I don't know that he views it that way but sharing a spot in the class of 2027 with somebody else in his position whereas hometown school Ohio State you are the priority you're the clear priority there. But again, if if he wasn't if he was disinterested in Penn State, would he set up a return visit right.

18:23So we'll see how it ultimately unfold I would still probably lean Ohio State for obvious reasons right the buck eyes are very tough to beat in recruiting he's from the state of Ohio. Penn State was the first off from though he's got up he's got a nice rapport with saviour Huggins the running back coach and Matt Campbell that that counts for something for what it's worth. So to be determined what ultimately happens here in running back recruiting I put very little odds for Kim on spelled a flip away from Georgia to anywhere not just Penn State and I give Penn State a strong fighting chance to potentially land Jordan Hall which would be be more than just a solid commitment there in the 2027 class.
