Please join us at Crime Stories with Nancy Grace on the iHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you find your podcasts. Hope you join us. I'll see you there, friend. Oh, look at this duo. It is Braun and Spilly, Ryan Spillborgs joining me. We are about to dive into a couple games, but we'll of course start with the Padres that's a fresh run right now. They were just able to completely dominate the cubs over a couple games. Spilly, it almost looks like you're wearing the shirt right now. The tazis shirt right there with a little pod. It's a Niño. Yeah. It's actually three shots. I look good in Brown. I look really good in Brown.
Brown you can, Brown you can wear with anything, I guess. Is that what they say? Well, they say in San Diego right now. They love the Brown. They're celebrating their pop and bottles. We're doing this live right now. So Padres completely utterly dominant in this two game, a little performant here in the wild car. We're going to get Spilly's thoughts. So let's start it off first of all with our full count. It's a full count. Oh yeah, it is. Full count is fueled by marathon. Let's do this. What did you see, Spilly, over these couple games. A lot of screaming and cheering and happiness from a team that dominates at home. It goes to show you how important the wild card is to have some home field advantage unless you're Houston because they can't win at home. When it comes to San Diego, this has been a team that I've watched obviously in the National League West covering the Rockies and going to San Diego all the time. This is a ballpark where if you think about the alternate universe of AJ Preller not making
trades. Like I can take you way back to even not trading with James Shields to the Chicago White Sox to get Fernando Tate's. If you didn't do this, this team would look completely different. You'd probably have Mackenzie Gore, you'd have James Wood, you'd have CJ Abrams. But what has happened in the last three years, and I've saw it. Like I saw it when Wantsoto was traded to the Padres. I was there for that the very first game. What it created was an atmosphere that very few teams have. We have now seen through the last couple of years, over three million fans through the gates of Peco. That place is a party. And San Diego has a couple of things going for them in that market. When I start thinking about Peter Sider and if you ever met this guy, Peter Sider, the late Peter Sider was hell bent on bringing a world championship to San Diego. And he's like Burns Sage at home plate. This guy was awesome. But he was also a great marketer. And he understood that in San Diego without the chargers and no clippers, no NBA team,
no NFL team, that your market was really majorly baseball. And because of that, this team has turned into such a home field advantage to play in San Diego that you can see it. And certainly the Chicago Cubs felt it. The Chicago Cubs were as good as any team at Wrigley Field, especially late. They said, I think a Cubs record is here for most walkoffs. But they didn't get that opportunity being in San Diego. And as you're watching this Padres team and I saw them down the stretch. I saw them in September when they were starting to rake again. I said it numerous times on serious XM. I said it on the Rocky's broadcast. I was like, oh man, these guys are a wagon. Because now, if you look at all their numbers, you already knew that they had one of the best shut down bullpen in baseball. They were thinking about at the time during trade deadline, maybe moving on from Adrian Morione, who's going to be a free agent after this year. They decided not to. Instead, AJ Preller makes a trade for two starters. He gets Robbie Ray.
Then he gets Casey Meis, which ended up helping out the bullpen in a way that very few people can describe it. And I'll describe it for you. It allowed now for their bullpen to be fresher. And what we've seen, once their team started to hit and the big key here, there's a couple. Jackson Meryl started to hit like Jackson Meryl. But if you think about this year, what would the Padres look like without Ty France? Has anybody thought about that? This was a February minor league deal. Ty France had a career year. He made first base like he's a gold glove, platinum glove defender. And so the Padres defensively are an elite defensive group. The metrics bear it out. They are top three in Major League Baseball, out above average, defensive, unsafe, defensive efficiency. So when you have great defense with a shut down bullpen, with starters that can give you just enough, and then now you have a team that's starting to rake with a longer lineup,
that's what the Cubs just faced. And the Cubs really, when you think about it, had no chance, especially with the start that you got from Michael King on game one. So this Padres team has everything capable of winning a World Series, getting to the World Series, knocking out the Dodgers. Today is just a wild day when I think about it, Scott, because we lost two teams that easily could be in the World Series, which is the Chicago Cubs and the Boston Red Sox. Today was a wild day. The ocean moves us, surfing a wave or savoring the view. The ocean delights us as playful honors restore coastal kelp forests. The ocean connects us. Visit monoraybeacorium.org slash connects. But don't wait. These special savings won't last. Dream, make it easy. Toyota, let's go places. Yeah, and for the Cubs, they're going to have to do a lot of thinking here, Spilly. First of all, if you want to be in a better position, you need to win near division. And even more so, try and get yourself a buy, right? The brewers just own them in the division lately. Also you need to not fade down the stretch so these games can be at home. Home field advantage doesn't always matter, but in this series it mattered a ton. I think that was obvious to anyone. And it's not even just the atmosphere. It's the way that the team actually plays on the field differently. The atmosphere in Philly is wild, too. Sometimes they don't play as well at home. The Padres completely shine at home. And you could see it from the regular season record for the Cubs. They had the best offense in baseball this year, if you're going by runs, right? Front to back. And I know the Padres really poured it on the second half of the season, but for Chicago, front of the season to the back, that was the one thing you pretty much had all year was the Cubs new edged score runs, right? It was not many games where you would see something happen and be, you know, a poor performance
on the offensive side for this team. Part of that had to do with Pee Krormstrong, Alex Breggman coming on strong in the second half of the season. So let's start there. How did the Padres silence these two? I know it's only two games, but over 15 from PCA and Alex Breggman. And overall, if you look at the Cubs, I mean, this was a team that had popped during the season. They had one extra base hit I have down in this series. And that was the ninth inning double for Nico Horner off of Mason Miller in a three run game. That's it. So much as the Padres put together a nice performance, you know, in a lot of ways on offense and the defense is clean like you mentioned. I mean, the pitching staff with the two starters and then going early in the hook with Paveta getting out of there and the fourth inning going right to Brad Gray, Rodley, you guys, and then moving through all of your big boys to Miller at the finish line shows you exactly what you're going to get with the Padres. This is a good brand of wild card series baseball. Yeah. And I think it's a, I think it's a state of the division series too. I'm not worried about where the Padres were. I think it started with Michael King. Michael King getting the punch out of Pico Armstrong and then kind of set in the tone.
We also saw about a two mile an hour increase for Michael King, which this guy can pitch. I mean, like there's a reason why the Padres brought him back. Like this guy can absolutely pitch. And which strangers last year, I remember when Michael King was on the shelf. He was dealing with a shoulder injury that nobody in baseball had ever suffered before. Nobody knew what to do. It was a, it was a one of one. So Michael King was dealing with some, because he's a big time crossfire, really creates a lot of movement. And so he just had a strange injury. And you know, he weren't quite sure what you were going to get when you got him this season. And what we saw in game one was high velocity, high movement, unbelievable sweeper, and the Cubs had no answer for it. And beyond that, when I think post mortem for the Cubs, you know, Craig Council was brought in on the biggest, you know, contract we've ever seen a manager get, which is great for managers, because he kind of set the market. Dave Roberts is happy with Craig Council and so is everybody else.
But what Craig was dealing with was a bullpen that was bad all year, and especially the second half of the season, it was a bad bullpen. They tried to address it. I like the moves that the Cubs made. I think Jed Hoyer, you know, getting a Ryan Zephyrjon and then getting a Clay Holmes and even a David Peterson was important for them. But they lacked swing and miss. So the swing and miss was a problem for them. And you know, even with Matthew Boyd, who down the stretch, I think he went six out of seven games, he was going out at least five innings at least. Didn't have a ton of swing and miss. And with the team like the Padres were at this time right now, they're actually hitting homers for Nando's hitting homers. Machado looks great. We saw a homer from Xander Bogart's in game one. The Cubs were overmatched. I think that's what it boils down to. It felt like for me, as I was watching the Padres getting ramped up for the end of the season, they were the best team in baseball. And they were playing like it. And then they got the home field advantage. And to be honest, if the Cubs maybe face the Phillies, the Cubs are moving on.
If the Cubs took on the Atlanta Braves right now, maybe the Cubs are moving on from the Braves. But they've matched up against the wrong team. Right now, like, and you know this, we've seen this for how many days? How many years, Scottie, we've been doing this thing for? When a team gets hot going into the postseason and they're playing well, it doesn't matter what your regular season record was or how many runs you scored during the regular season or the names that you have on your roster. You just run into a hot team. And what you have right now is the Padres with a ton of talent, a poop ton of talent who are playing their very best brand of baseball with their best squad. They got their guys back. They literally got their guys back. We saw Joe Musgrove come out. He hadn't pitched in two years. He's throwing 96. So Padres are an absolute wagon right now. My thing to you is the way that Tati Scott, the crowd involved right from the jump in the first inning of game one and then Machado adding on with the home run.
You know what was a unique fire starter, fire cracker, sparker in this game too? Key Crow Armstrong burns one of two challenges in his first at bat. Fans are smart. Fans love the new ABS challenge system. We've seen that all year, right? It's fun to get on the UPS. It's even fun if the UPS is correct in this case because you now get to give crap to the MVP of the National League for burning something very important. And yes, they had one remaining. You have to be so much more careful the rest of the game. Fans know that. So when you blow that so early on, right? You're the first batter of the freaking game. And they had no leverage. Yeah, so yeah, you have and if you're PC, yeah, you don't want to give up your A B, right? So if you really believe that that was out of the zone, what was it? The curveball that that nick the inside corner. Then if you're the Cubs, cool, I want that at bat to extend. That's the best player in the National League this year. But it wasn't the case. He landed it. So the crowd goes nuts and I just felt like right from there, I'm like, oh, they're
screwed. Like it is such a, it's crazy. It's I don't want to call it a momentum swing, but it's such a start to the game to fire up the crowd. And I felt like from then on out, the Cubs are going to be just playing defense the rest of this game. And that's what it felt like. You're just waiting for the big Padres moment, which probably you could point to, you know, Gavin Sheets providing the churns there with the two run homeras as the moment where I like, all right, see you. Bullpen, you got a little room to breathe now too. Good night. Gavin Sheets shirt that just came out to a little holy sheets on foul territory shop.com. But thoughts on sheets, because you mentioned Tyre France in the beginning of the season, the unlikely names for the Padres were the guys that were leading the charge in the beginning of the year when Tatis couldn't find his home run swing. Machado was off to a slow start. Jackson Merrill didn't look like himself in the first half of the season. So it's almost like those guys kept them afloat in the first half of the year. So that superstars could eventually do their thing. That's nice. Yeah, I want to show. I want a holy sheet. And I also love how this thing came about.
This came from the Spanish broadcasters last year and Gavin Sheets, which is like a great story. It's kind of like Andrew Vaughn. He had two guys that left the Chicago White Sox. You get out of that hell hole from the last couple of years. And they found like an opportunity like San Diego last year with Gavin Sheets, they rehabed his swing. And he took off it. And he had a home run where it was Spanish broadcasting started screaming holy sheets. And it was so good in the crowd, of course, because like I mentioned with San Diego fans, like the Padre fans, there's nothing else to root for. I mean, obviously you do have women's soccer. You do have college sports, but it is San Diego Padre's baseball. If you go to San Diego and you're basically from like, Fernando all the way up to like Newport Beach and you'd like leak into basically Dodger country, there's Padre fans. And they are filling the stands and they are very attentive. They understand it. So I love your point about the ABS because they're 100% right.
You can't lose a challenge early on. And the thing is too, when you have a team on a roll and they're feeling the energy of the crowd. We felt this in 2007 when I was on the Rockies. We had like, Rockies fans were going crazy because we won, you know, basically 21 out of 22 games. And there was a stretch where we won 13 out of 14. We felt the fans and we knew if we could feel the fans for us in a positive way, the opposition felt it in a negative way. And Craig Council addressed it. You could kind of see it. There's times where you're playing and you just feel like, God, I feel like I'm playing 10 players right now. It's not fair. And so yeah, man, like I think what I'm looking forward to now is this San Diego Padre's Dodger series because this is the best the Padres have been playing. And if you go back and you think two years ago when the Dodgers ended up winning the World Series in 2024, the Padres had a home field advantage and they were up three games to
one and they ended up losing that series or was it two to one? So they had to win one more. So it was a five in series. Yeah, but hold up. You're getting in front of yourself. They got to get through the top record in baseball first on the board. They got to get through the Brewers. That's right. Yeah. So hold your horses. And we're going to get to fill these braves in a moment. But here's my thing because it'll play to your point. And yes, Dodgers, Padres and LCS would be insane as we've seen in the past. But NLDS, if I'm Milwaukee, I'm looking at that series just now going, damn, I wish we would have. Yeah, they don't want to face him. Billy's bullpen or the brave starting pitching, the Padres look like a much more complete team right now, right? It's about right now. Like you mentioned, the team that I don't want to face if I'm Milwaukee out of the three teams, the braves, the fillies or the Padres is San Diego. I don't even think it's a question based on what I'm saying. No, it's not a question. And you go back to it. And even though I say throw out the regular season, it's not about throwing out the regular season.
It's about throwing out the confidence. You can't throw out the confidence. This team literally thinks they can beat anybody. And I don't think any team can beat them right now. Like that. I think that's a fact. I don't think I'm speaking out of school here. Playing better defense in virtually any team, their bullpen once you get to the fifth or sixth inning, it's over. You're playing your playing 15 outs. Scott, you're playing a 15 out game. We used to talk about playing a 25 out game or 23 at 22 out game, right? Like now we're talking about your if you get into fifth inning, that's 15 outs. And then they're going to their bullpen. It's over. You're done. Yeah. Hey, the brewers had a better overall regular season. The Padres had just as good of a second half as Milwaukee. I don't know the exact records, but close enough. If you if you I test it and you watch games every night like we do, Padres look just as good if not better than Milwaukee second half. So point is that series is going to be ridiculous. Okay. And then we're going to get to the other side of the National League bracket here. So full count is fueled by marathon where fun runs on full.

Telepare sisters returns Wednesday October 7th at 9 8 central only on BET. All right, let's get to the other series. It's presented by Fox one and the Fox one app, which will eventually have the NLDS. We'll get to that later. But first in the NL wild card match up here, the Phillies Force a Game 3 with Atlanta and that was a great game. Great game. Full of flubs. Redemption. Unlikely heroes. Where do you want to start here? We've got let's get to boom later. She's going to get a little special reward. But let's start with Harper, right? I mean, this is the one of the faces of the sport for a long time.
And he misses a fly ball that you know what had me thinking about if the Phillies end up getting bounced in the series. I know it was a bigger stage back then. But remember when Judge dropped the fly ball a couple years ago in the World Series. And centerfield. Yeah, is there for that here? Former Big League outfielder right here. Like tell me what happened and do you feel your heart drop when you watch that? So I'll go back to Aaron Judges one for a second. Like that one had a little bit of English on it. It was nuckling on him and he took his eyes off it. So like I felt like that. Like I felt for him because that's happened to me before. The play in right field for Bryce Harper. I'll break this one down for you pretty easy. So when it comes to an outfielder and you got to remember Bryce Harper was a right fielder. Then he had the internal brace surgery. So then he came to first base. And then once Dom Maddenly got the trade for Luis Ryes. He moved Ryes a second, stopped the third. He moved ball over to first, which is a much bigger shape body. So a much better first base than Bryce Harper.
Even though Bryce Harper made himself a pretty good first baseman. So now you got Bryce Harper back in the outfield. And so an outfielder relies on three things, three things. So number one is we're looking for ball in zone. And so once we're looking in ball in zone, we're looking for the swing. So you got to left the end of here and Drake ball one. It's hard to pick up the ball whenever you have an opposite hand hitter. So if there's a left handed hitter and I'm in right field, it's hard to see in the zone. So it's a little hard to see the ball off the bat. Number two is you're listening to the sound. So I could tell by the sound of the bat, like if it's good, like, pop. I know that that ball is hit well. If I hear like a, I know it's off the end of the bat. So I can come in. So we really rely on our audible. And then the other part is our movement. So we, you know, when I'm right handed to hitter is or left handed hitter is hitting. And I'm in left field or right field, I'm going to move towards the line. So wherever whichever direction the line is, that's where the glove side is going to be. The problem that you have on this place specifically is it hit right at him.
So number one, I hate to be honest, like, I can't stand these games starting at two o'clock because shadows do become a problem. So shadows are a problem. If you go back and you watch it, like he's somewhere in the shadows, it's a little bit harder to see at that twilight time. You don't hear the ball off the bat because the crowd is loud. So those first two things I mentioned as far as like being an outfielder and hearing and seeing what you need to see to make a decision, those are gone. Like you didn't have those. And then the second he goes back and it was hit a little bit harder than he thought over his head. Yeah, he wanted to crawl into a hole. And and what was really cool, Scott, like hearing him talk about it post game about how he was able to just kind of let that thing go because he's playing so many big games since he was 10 years old. And he didn't really feel the pressure. He was like, man, I knew the next thing I had to do is take a quality at that, which he did in the bot in the in the eighth inning when him and Shorber went back to back. That play happens. That's a north. I mean, there's a reason why it says runs hits errors errors happen.
They happen all the time. Sometimes it's variables of what's going on in the game environment. So like I don't blame him for missing this one. It was pretty much a catch he should have made 99 out of 100 times. But in those specific instances, I kind of presented to you why it's possible that he missed it. So, you know, overall, this was a great series. It was a great series. I just think it's crazy. And maybe you agree or disagree. I can't stand, you know, thinking that we have to have our network television. And I get it. They pay the big bucks. But why do you have to have a window when these teens don't play during this time frame? Like these should be six o'clock starts. Well, I can debate that only all day. I know people who pissed, but you can't have all the games on at the same time. It's just what pays the bills. Now you could say, hey, they play a little bit later. Well, that's 60 billion teams. This is a little bit smaller. I get what you're saying. And I can have that debate with you all day. I'm just saying like the word.
Verly I know the business side. I understand the business side as well as you do. I'm just saying that from a from if an organization is playing games where there's going to be shadows and a chance to impact the game that knocks out one of these postseason teens that very well. I mean, Atlanta braze and Philadelphia Phillies built their teens to win a world series that they could be knocked out because of the variables of starting a game because you're worried about network television. That's all I'm saying. Like that's clear. I understand, but but they also they're both dealing with it. And also now they're going to have a game three for all the marbles. And that's going to be at night. I want to have all the scenarios thrown out. That one is at I believe 8 p.m. Eastern someone behind the scenes that's watching right now can check me on that one. But it's the only game three that we've got going on. So now you'll have that lined up. Here's the problem though. Okay. So first off, both teams have interesting bullpen storylines. The brave bullpen this season has been much better than Phillies bullpen. Phillies bullpen was like who the heck am I trusting down the stretch? But this is where things get interesting in the playoffs.
All of a sudden in game two here. First of all, on game one, it was it was Phillies bullpen. And that's been a problem right in the past few post seasons for them. And then you're looking to see brave bullpen world's better than Phillies bullpen. Okay. Now fast forward game two all of a sudden. Oh, here comes Andrew painter with the good stuff. He was demoted earlier this year came back much better. And he shoved in for multiple innings. He cleaned the pitch and game three, too, right? So you've got that side of the equation. Other side of the equation, brace fans are pissed. They were talking about this on hammer territory. They're using the same three guys back to back days. That's fine. That does put you in a little bit of an interesting spot to those guys have their best stuff in game three. And Dylan Lee had a poor second half as reverse splits. And he's the guy that gives up both home runs in this one. So you start to get the question marks from brave country and they're used to a lot of winning. So any criticism there with how things were deployed and how it's going to line up for game three with Lee, the guy there. And then how do you do this in game three when you've used 20s and Lee and end
a glaciers in both games? Yeah. So, okay. So go back to network TV. I'm going to let this one go. I really like this broadcast. I like all the broadcaster in this wild card because you have an analyst from both teams. So C.J. Nikowski and you have John Kruck along with Matt Vaskersian. And I love how we've had like Steve Stone and then it was Jeff Flum with the White Sox. So I love that you have both analysts that have been watching these teams year round. And what C.J. said during this time frame with with Dylan Lee was, hold on a second, Phillies have had Dylan Lee's number. So he openly questioned on air during during that move. So it's not just fans going like, Hey, what the heck? You're talking about the Atlanta Braves color analyst that watched every single game of the Braves going like, this is a little spot right here where Dylan as good as he is. I mean, like he's unbelievable. It's got a great curveball, huge vert. Got a great slider too. But for whatever reason, like the Phillies have his number, they have.
Like they have good stats on him over the course of the season. He had an outing where I don't even think he was able to record enough out to get out of the inning. So I think it's fair to second guest wall right here. I also think when you look at Walt Weiss because at the end of this year, he's going to get votes for Nash League manager of the year. And part of the reason why is he dealt with as many injuries, significant injuries as any team in baseball. And the biggest thing he didn't his first year was really manage the bullpen. And he did a fantastic job now that one of the huge reasons why he was able to do such a good job, especially early on was he had Robert Suarez. Robert Suarez is like an unbelievable wild card to have. He was his high leverage guy. I don't think Suarez was 100% feeling great. So it's fair to second guest right here where I'd Dylan Lee was there. But that's also one of his best relievers year round except that the Phillies have had his numbers. So I didn't mind this. I didn't mind it. But I also, you know, it's easy after the fact to second guest.
It's just how it works. But at the end of the day, like Phillies, the the the bats they put, you know, with the back-to-back homers and then Alec Bohm later on, I don't know, we're going to get to them. These are just great at bats, great at bats. So like you can't just find an excuse every single time your team doesn't win. Sometimes the other team has really good big ligures and they actually execute it. So like we can we can go this time and time again. If Dylan Lee would have got the outs, he'd be like, what a great move. He doesn't get the outs. Now that's a terrible move. So it's whatever you want. It's depending on what fan base you are cheering for. Yeah. And we're doing this right now at one 33 AM East Coast time, right? Where the Phillies and Braves are hopefully sleeping and getting ready for their game three matchup on Thursday night as of now. And we had not seen what the starting pitching matchup is going to be. But I can tell you this, if you're a Braves fan, you're nervous.
Zach Wheeler on short rest, Nola is going to be available on regular rest to be a part of this, right? And Durand should be involved here as well. Painter really saved the bullpen here. And if the Phillies do advance, they're going to have to get very crafty with how they do things going forward because the circle of trust in their bullpen is not high right now. But Zach Wheeler on short rest, getting late in his career, but still looking like he's in his prime. That's a scary, scary task for again, I'm going to talk about a Braves fan base that has been kicking and screaming and yelling for more starting pitching. Now, I know you can't predict strider and small embark and a number of other youngsters going down, right? All in the same year. But in the off season, they kind of promised they were going to get someone they didn't really come through. Then at the trade deadline, Tyler Malley has been everything and more. He's been one of the best pickups at the trade deadline, but Braves fans and just even me, I would say I was expecting two here, Spilly. And they got one. Well, guess what? Now we're in a game three and Braves fans are like so.
Yeah, yeah, strap it on. By the way, did you, so did you hear the story today, Scott, when it came to Tyler Malley, he was in the bullpen and felt like a tweak in his oblique and still went out and they were actually considering not even letting him pitch today. And he goes out and he shoves for what seven innings. That's a dude. And by the way, by the way, bad news, how they would have had another bullpen game. They would have been, it would have been a disaster. And by the way, Tyler Malley, when I start thinking about, you know, the acquisitions during trade deadline, Tyler Malley was probably the best one. His numbers are actually better than Terrick's scoobles. So it's like, you know, you think about what the Braves did. Now, like, Santa, apolis, and maybe he's shrewd, maybe he didn't go out and get enough starters like you wanted, but his moves have always been, I mean, come on. Like the Braves are the Braves and like, Alex, Anthopolis makes moves that makes sense. Yeah, seven innings, one or run six punchouts and he had a little tweak in his, in his body before the start.
He almost didn't make the start. You've gutted it. That's what gutting a start looks like in the postseason. That's, that's awesome. We need to make a Tyler Malley shirt. I'm with you and they nailed it on that one, right? Because when they acquired Malley, you're like, cool, that's the back end starter. What's the front end starter? That was the front end starter. And really then you just look and you're like, they still need it in another playoff arm, even if Malley is pitching like a two, which is what he's doing in the second half and here in the postseason. So yeah, I'm a fan to have been a fan for a long time, Anthopolis. I think sometimes when a team sets such a high standard, you get really critical and that's fair. We're going to get to see this though in game three and and maybe, you know, the bullpen for the braves is strung together here for a bullpen game. The problem is the Phillies don't have to play that game. They don't have to play a bullpen game. That's the one thing that they've been able to create is Christopher Sanchez and Zach Wheeler in this case here. And Hazel Slyzardo, right, who came back and gave them enough. So I want to, I want to get to moment in moment.

OK, I want to get to the player of the game here. So let's do that. Shall we? All right, MLB 9 innings 26 helping us with the play of the game. And that is Alex Bome. Alex Bome, dude, has had a year, a year, a lot of lows and off field turbulence. You can read it. It's public. There's good articles in the athletic about Bome going through a lawsuit that eventually got settled outside of court with his family and his parents specifically. So you can read about that. I'm not going to spend much time there right now, but it's real. It's out there. That's a distraction among the most that you can really put against a player to have to deal with that for your family. How about the distraction even within the game here, Spilley? You talked about Harper making a mistake. I mean, he had a tough ground ball that didn't go his way, right? In terms of creating a little extra offense for Atlanta. And eventually you can change all of that when you focus on a quality AB.
And that's what he was able to do to put a home run into the seats and help give the Phillies a little life. He's an interesting story for me because there's a couple things. I mean, from the outside looking at Alex Bome, I mean, he's a world of talent, right? He's a six foot five defender who's maybe not a great defense third baseman. And I think like there's been times where people wanted him to be more, maybe like a Troy Gloss type hit 30 homers, but that's not him. And then once he moved to first and I understand like, yeah, he had a defensive misscue, but he also had an unbelievable double play. And he has found a home in first base. It's also made the Phillies defense a lot better. Like this Phillies defense was not elite, especially with trade turners short. And so having Stodd or this combination of Stodd up the middle, because he's an elite defender at second. And then having, you know, Sosa or whoever they're going to put a third, usually it's Stodd if they had a rise.
But having Bome at first, because he's such a large target, if you look at some of the infield defensive metrics, they like immediately improved. They got a lot better. And knowing, you know, Bome like again, like watching him from afar, he was kind of one of those snappers. So like Pete Crohe Armstrong early in his career as a snapperies that throws helmet a punch, Bome has gotten better and better about that. I think he's handling his emotions. And then he made a small slight, you know, swing adjustment, just adjusted where his bat was. So it was a little bit more flat. I got in the zone a little bit better. And then you started seeing some of the power numbers because the first half was awful. Him and Stodd had an awful first half. And I can't imagine playing baseball, dealing with a, you know, a lawsuit with my parents. Like that is there's things that players deal with. This is like on a whole new level that I can't imagine coming in the field. And feeling like I could compete with my, my perfect focus. That's impossible. I don't, I don't think anybody could do that in any line of work. Let alone baseball and you're, you're trying to hit a ball that's coming at you in less than three tenths of a second.
So I give a lot of props. I feel like I've seen Alec Bome grow up a lot this year. He's actually turned into a player where, you know, if he comes up at the plate at any time, I'm like, oh, he's going to do something. And see him get this home run. It may not mean a lot in the grand scheme of things, but when to your point of like, just thinking about the entire season and totality and what this guy has gone through, like I felt like that was a nice human moment. Like I celebrated that with him. I was like, hell yeah, dude. Like I was churried for him when he was rounding the bases. I was like, I, that's got to feel so good to round the bases. And you know, on an elimination game and put the Phillies to one more, especially given the fact that, you know, Phillies fans have been, you know, on this roller coaster with them. They love them. They hate them again. Then they love them again. It just, it's nice for even, you know, I'm not a big Phillies fan. I'm not a big outside of, you know, my normal sphere of influence or my bubble of teams that
I root for. But I root for Alec Bome. I found myself openly rooting for him. I was like, hell yeah, dude, do it. Like that's awesome. Like that. That's you, you can, you can appreciate that. You like as anything, even if you're not a Phillies fan, like the human aspect of it, where you're like, good for him. Right? Like even if you didn't like the guy, you're like, good for that guy. He deserved that. And what he did. So post game, he said he was trying to pull that ball, right? So there's two hits for Bome in this series with elevated fastballs that Chris sale does not give up hits on fastballs above the zone. There was one other knock the entire year, a single from Bobby White on opening day. And Bome had that in the first inning to get the Phillies on the board in a game they eventually lost, but they actually had a chance, right? They were in control of that one until the Riley Homer off the ran you tip your cap. Okay? Now game two, did he have a Fuentes? Throws freaking hard, right? That one was, I don't know what the Vila number was, but elevated fastball.
Again, here's Bome who said he was trying to pull it. He had one home run to right field out of his 15 in the regular season. Like that's not where his baseballs go. And yet that's where the baseball lands, like the beauty of the sport when he does that. I've had that happen to me a bunch of times where I'm trying to pull a fastball. And then I hit like an off speed pitch opposite field. And I thought I got the fastball. It's just that's my swing path. Like I never got that bad head out. Like I was more deflecting it. So when he said that, I was like, oh, I know exactly what that feels like. It's not that we have a slow pull. We don't have a slow pull. Like my bat speed is it slow. It's just I let the ball travel. So when I'm trying to pull it, I might have moved it up like a half an inch, which is the difference between catching 98 and 99 and hitting it fair for a homer or falling it off to a brage fan. So yeah, like mentally he was trying to pull the baseball, but the swing path was still
the same. Incredible. And it creates a game through. So props to bone, Philly stay alive. It's going to be an awesome game through. It's the only game three that we get here, but we'll appreciate it. They will get their prime time a fair now in Atlanta. You earn that division around. You get the home games. This is the game now. Well, we'll see what happens. Looks like a 50-50 game of Wheeler's pitching in that one to me at the least, right? If the braves have some edges in some of the categories, the Philly should definitely have the edge in the starting pitching category. We'll be all over it. We got two hours of FT Live 1 to 3 Eastern. So look forward to that. Also just to put a cap on this player, the game segment, shout out to MLB9 innings 2026.
