About this episode

“For the first time ever in the US, the best U23 wrestlers in the world descend on Las Vegas for the 2026 Galaxy U23 World Wrestling Championships at the UNLV, Thomas and Max Center, from October 12 to the 18.”From the transcript

Miami Marlins build toward a breakthrough offseason as Otto Lopez claims the NL hit title and Max Meyer dazzles before injury stalls his campaign. Can this young core, anchored by Sandy Alcantara, Eury Perez, and breakout star Javier Sanoja, finally push Miami into the postseason spotlight?

The conversation focused on Peter Bendix’s offseason strategies, highlighted by a search for more power—will a new right-handed slugger transform the lineup? Key nuggets include health updates for Max Meyer, Anthony Bender, and Owen Caissie, plus the importance of extending foundational players like Alcantara. The Marlins’ highest attendance since 2017 underscores the city’s hunger for a winning team—will a shored-up rotation and a superstar emergence be enough to deliver playoff baseball to Loan Depot Park at last?

You are Locked On Marlins, your daily podcast on the Miami Marlins. Part of the Locked On Podcast Network, your team every day. I'm Jamie Goldman and welcome into another edition and off season edition of Locked On Marlins Locked On. Now the number one sports podcast network cannot thank you enough for 10 years of the Locked On Network, your team every day. But personally, I can't thank you enough for sticking with me and Ethan this entire season and listening to us talk about these marlins and covering this team.

You thought you got enough of me? You thought you saw the last of me? Well, I'm here for one more. I thought my previous show was my final, but I made a little mistake in scheduling and I'm here for one more and I couldn't be happier about it. Today's episode is brought to you by Kowshi for a limited time download Kowshi and use code Locked On to get $25 when you trade $25. Kowshi, trade what's next on today's show. We're going to discuss what's coming next for the Miami Marlins. We're also going to get into Peter Bendix's press conference that was this week. So we're going to get into that what he said, a couple of good nuggets from that. But we'll start today with the year that was. Well, a little casual version of Locked On Marlins today here folks. You know, sit down on the couch, grab a beer, grab a glass of wine, whatever your face of cruising is and let's sit down and let's talk some Marlins baseball here.

I wish I saw the live comments when you guys are commenting and we could have a little bit of a real happy hour conversation and get you guys in on it here. But not able to do that at the moment. So we're going to rip it just like we do all season one. Well, you know, it was about what we expected this year folks. I think the Marlins overall had a, you know, if I had to put it on a grading scale, I'd probably put it at a beat. They didn't fail and passed. I mean, they passed, but they didn't, you know, really significantly exceed standards by any means. You know, they did what they were supposed to do. I've been saying all season that the goal for this team was to improve on what they did last year. Well, technically they did. Last season 79 wins, 79 and 83. This year, 80 wins.

So you reach the 80 win mark. You're not able to get to 500 needed one more win for that. It's funny to sit here and look back. You know, it's funny. I looked on the baseball reference page for the Marlins today and it's interesting. You forget about things, you know, that happened over the course of this season. I'm looking at the baseball reference page and I see Austin Slater's name. And I was like, I didn't remember that guy was on the team. It was so long ago. You know, and then you see names like Liam Hicks and it makes you think, well, what if you would have, you know, what if the Marlins didn't trade him? What would that have equated to a couple more wins? Could we be sitting here saying they won 84 games and had a winning season and are just barely missed the playoffs? You know, you can sit here and say what if and what have you and all that all day long. But the truth of the matter is we found some good things for this Marlins team this season and I think there's a lot to build on moving forward. You know, obviously the high of the season was June, the month of June, the six month of the year, the Marlins were electric.

And the two is the most electric Marlins baseball I can remember in a long time. I put it right there with the 2023 playoff run. I put it right up there with the 2020 playoff run. I know this wasn't a playoff run, but you felt the buzz. You felt the energy and you felt some kind of juice for this Marlins team for the first time in a long time here in South Florida. People were talking about this team. People were starting to show up at the ball games. You know, there was some buzz, not just locally, but even nationally around this team. Max Meyer was light in the world on fire. Otto Lopez led the league and hits, which he finished with the most hits in Major League baseball this season. Otto Lopez is your hit king. So congrats to Otto. Real breakout season for Otto Lopez. You know, I've been saying it all year. I think up the middle, the Marlins have some of the best one to punch that you could have on this team. I know Edwards missed a good chunk of the rest of the year.

He got injured on a guy's trying to steal second base and he kind of got dinged up there and was never able to return. Same thing is true for Max Meyer. You know, he had a lights out start to the season and we kind of, he got hurt there. I think early August and really right after the All Star break and, you know, they said he'll be out a couple of weeks. We might see him in early September and he never made his way back. I think that had to do with the Marlins play without him. It's, you know, I'm curious to think if the Marlins wouldn't have had such a drop off like they did, would they have, you know, put Meyer back on the roster. I don't have a problem at all with the way that they handled the Max Meyer situation. The Marlins were out of bottom line. Marlins didn't do enough to keep themselves in spitting distance of the playoff race down the stretch there and it's the reason that Max Meyer didn't come back.

I don't think there's anything lingering there. I don't think there's anything that hiding from us there. I really think it was just a case of the baseball team isn't making the playoffs. Why should we risk putting Max Meyer out there and injuring him? Which I say that. But then the Marlins turn around and put Sandy all contra in the ninth inning to save a game and they do the same thing with the Erie Perez putting them in late in a ball game in between starts. So, you know, it depends how you look at this Marlins team, but I'm happy they didn't bring Max back for, I don't want to say meaningless baseball, but no playoff implications. You're not waiting a World Series this season. And at the end of the day, that's the end goal. That's always the end goal is to make the playoffs continue playing play some October baseball and compete for a World Series. And overall, I think the Marlins made steps in the right direction towards that this season. The core that this team has and we've seen flashes of big success for this team.

I just talked about the month of June. You know, it was a really, it was a tale of two teams this year. First half of the season, this Marlins team was 52 and 42 at one point. There were 10 games over 500 comfortably in a wildcard spot. And then the trade deadline happened, the all-star break happened, the 12 game losing street capins, and it just takes all of the error out of your tires. It takes all the buzz out of the building and everything you could say. A quick note on the attendance. The Marlins had their highest attendance since 2017. So I go back to this, this kind of theme I brought up on this show a couple of times. The four of Panthers laid the blueprint for the Marlins to get fans. All you have to do is win. Win games stay competitive and that's prong number one. Prong number two is keep guys that the franchise fans can latch onto. The Panthers have done that with Alexander Barkov, Matthew Kuchuk, Aaron Eckblet, Gustav

Foresling, Sam Reinhardt, Sam Bennett. The list goes on and on. The Marlins need to do that same kind of thing with Sandial Contra, Yuri Perez, Kyle Stowers, Aero Virtual Hernandez, Otto Lopez, Xavier Edwards, Joe Mac, that's a big one, Owen Casey, Javier Sonola, good note on him from Bendex Press Conference. I'll get into that in a moment. But that's what the Marlins need to do. Aero Virtual Hernandez had 25 home runs this year. Otto Lopez led the national league and hits this season. Kate Marcy had an awful first half for the season and then an incredible second half for the season. We don't know where Marcy stands but Marlins fans can latch onto this core. If you keep building with this core and you got the big three of Yuri, Max and Sandy as you're starting pitching, that's something to build on. That's something that'll keep fans coming to the ballpark and we saw a little bit of that this season.

You know, it was brief but that period of June and July where the Marlins were fighting and the Marlins were competing for a playoff spot and the Marlins were hot. You saw increase in attendance consistently during that time and that's just a small sample size. Could you imagine if the Marlins piled together two or three playoff seasons in a row? I'm not saying they have to win the World Series. I'm not saying they have to go beat the Los Angeles Dodgers in a seven game series. Take the playoffs, get a home playoff game in the city of Miami. We have never had that. Ever. I mean, in Lone Depot Park and Marlins Park since the team has become the Miami Marlins, there has never been a home playoff game here. The last home playoff game for the Marlins in the state of Florida was in 2003 when they won the World Series. That is a shame. That is an absolute shame that there's no wonder there's no fans because they haven't won. They haven't done anything and every time they get close to winning something, they ship

everyone off. Stanton, Yellow, Chosuna, Real Muto. That entire team was created away. I understand the thought process of trade guys at their highest value before they go on a downturn of their career and before you have to really pay these guys, okay, I understand that, but it only makes sense if you do something with the guys you got back. All those guys I just mentioned were traded after the 2017 season. There's been nothing since then. In the years following, 2018, 2019, 2020, I know they made the playoffs in 2020, but that was a COVID year playoff. They went 31 and 29 that year. It's not really like, you know, they were a serious playoff contender. They snuck into the playoffs in 2023, but from that realm of Stanton, Yellow, Chosuna, D Gordon, Real Muto, that entire group. The Marums didn't do anything with it. Peter Bendick, because I asked this, if you're not going to keep these guys and you're going

to make these moves, you're going to trade Liam Hicks, you're going to trade Lake Bacter, which was a minor sell. I'm not saying he sold the farm and I'm happy about that. If you're going to make these proactive moves, I need to see something from the guys you bring back. It doesn't have to be immediate, but we need to see something. There needs to be a little proof in the pudding, if you will. We haven't seen that from this Marlins team. I got off on a little bit of a tangent here, but this is happy hour with Goldie. This is what's going to happen here on this show. Up next, we're going to get back on track here. I'm going to talk a little bit about the Bendick's press conference from today and where the Marlins sit moving forward into next season, maybe a little bit of a lock out talk as well. All right folks Peter Bendix end of season press conference has came and went a couple of good notes from that one. First off, Mars getting a new hitting coach. Bendix said the hitting coach Pedro Guerrero will not return next season said thank you for his work but it's time for a new voice in the hitting space is the exact word is that was used time for a new voice in the hitting space. I'm curious to see how that kind of changes the Marlins approach moving forward because this year obviously you've been following this team you know that it was a lot of small ball. There's a lot of you know trying to steal a bag trying to be aggressive on the base pass you know every play was you're trying to maximize as many bases as you possibly can.

I know that's kind of hand in hand with base running as well but I'm curious if the Marlins changed their approach with hitting for that as well because you know it's no secret the Marlins were in the bottom third of the league for power this year you know Arabert or Hernandez was your main home run hitter and you didn't really expect that coming into the year. You expected guys like Kyle Stowers to have more of a role and listen he came on towards the end of the year Griffin Kona and came on as well but you take a look at this Marlins roster they were not a team that was power centric by any means. So I'm curious if they lean more into the contact side of things or if they lean more into the power side of things or like Clayton said maybe just a new voice in there you know shake things up a little bit see what kind of sparks you can light because as far as contact goes I think the Marlins were a solid contact team this year auto Lopez is a perfect example of that. It hits the national league this season so you know it wasn't all bad for the Marlins

offense this year but definitely could have used a little bit more juice there was a lot of games this year where the Marlins got a gem from Max Meyer Sandiak Conteur Yuri Perez and you don't have any run support to help you out and at the end of that ball game you know you just got seven scoreless innings from your starting picture and it's still 0-0 so you know I don't want to see that moving forward I'm not going to beat this horse to death but the Marlins need to extend Sandiak Conteur you know Bendix didn't really say much about that during his press conference but goes back to what I was saying in the in the previous segment the only way to get a fan base consistently building and consistently growing and coming to these ball games is to get a face of franchise to get a couple of faces of the franchise core guys that you can build on and fans can latch on to and I think Sandiak Conteur is a one top tier the main guy for the job when it comes to that.

Bendix and the Marlins also said that Max Meyer Owen Casey Anthony Bender and Roni Henriquez who missed this entire season all of those guys should be ready to go for spring training really happy to hear that note on Henriquez I think he was a guy that really could have helped this Marlins team this season he was great with the Marlins in 2025 this season he missed the entire year with an injury they tried the Pete Fairbanks experiment it was a really rocky start to that experiment he kind of settled in a little bit towards the end of the season but then he dealt with a couple of injuries as well just not what the Marlins were looking for overall getting Henriquez back in that ball pen is going to be a major boost for this team next season also glad to hear about Casey and Bender I said this earlier didn't expect anything with Meyer and that was the case he'll be ready to go next spring Robbie Snelling should be back in the middle of next season they're estimating May or June

right now he went out with Tommy John this season really unfortunate situation for him kid with a ton of potential made his way up to the majors this year and got one start for the Marlins and then went down with Tommy John surgery so only a cup of coffee in the majors for Snelling after he was lighten the world on fire in the minor leagues so time will tell to see how he pans out in the starting role for the fish some bad news from the pressur William Kempner and Andrew Nardi are expected to miss most or or maybe all of next season disappointing to hear really like to Nardi decent left hander out of the pen had his moments had his bad moments as well but he was a guy that I kind of believed in same thing with Kempner he's a kind of a big hot stat mister Kempner and he's going to be out for a good chunk of next season if not the entire year next year as well so that's disappointing to hear as well one final note from his press conference

that I wanted to hit on he talked about hobby or Sonoma and how Sonoma really impressed the Marlins this year how he kind of developed into someone that the Marlins see as an everyday player and then Bendix even when it's far to say this guy could be a superstar but I've been saying this for a while Sonoma is my guy and this year he really showed you what he can do he was batting near 300 you played a bunch of different roles for this Marlins team a little bit of pop as well add some homers on the year and always came through when you needed them to Sonoma is a clutch performer for this Marlins team this year man and you know superstars a bit of a stretch for sure but they have something here with hobby for sure if they don't make him an everyday player next season I'm gonna I'm gonna throw a fit here this is my final episode with Lockdown Marlins but if Sonoma finds himself in a platoon role next year or out of the line up for an extended period of time with no explanation

I might just come right back on this show whoever's hosting it whatever the case may be I'm going to have to let the people know how I feel about hobby or Sonoma because that guy first off ball of energy you see the way he he he acts the way he carries himself that guy is an entered guy is your bunny for your baseball team always walking around with a smile always walking around fire you know hopping around excited about what's going on excited to get to the ballpark and play baseball and those are the kind of guys you want to build around um and of course play on the field was very good as well he's a guy that can play all over the lineup 2025 gold glove refer to utility guy he can play in the outfield he can play on the corner third base he can play short he can play second hobby can do it all he's got a good bat he's got good pop he's got good speed maybe he is a superstar time will tell but excited for what have you air can bring for this Marlins team next season coming up I'm gonna kind of end things by saying goodbye saying my real this one

I know folks I know I couldn't get enough of you you couldn't get enough of me but we're actually gonna say goodbye this time Goldies goodbye to um locked on Marlins it's been an absolute pleasure um hopefully the waterworks don't start going it's been a really fun year um like coming up we'll wrap things up for uh locked on Marlins 2026 how about a goof how about a production error on my end on the final episode of my career make baseball season more this year make the playoffs more this year on kowshi america's number one prediction market platform you can trade on every single game for tonight's red socks Yankees game red socks got their back against the wall right now ugly game one last night for the socks if you can't tell by the way I'm talking I lean red socks in the socks Yankees rivalry um but it should be a good one tonight and on kowshi the red socks have a

Las Vegas for the 2026 galaxy u23 world wrestling championships at the u and lv mc center from october 12 to the 18th don't miss your opportunity to see team us a's wrestlers battle for gold on the world stage right here in the united states tickets are on sale at u and lv tickets dot com get 20% off by using code team us a hello production goof there so apologize for that didn't mean to play the intro as i was heading to break there but um this is it folks this is the end of my locked on marlin's tenure um so i'll leave you with what i want the marlins to get done this offseason i know there's the looming lockout i only think the lockout and and an addition of the salary cap can help the marlins because this will force the marlins to go out there and spend more money on players dig deep in broo sherman's pockets and and get some higher profile higher paid guys on this marlin's roster not always a recipe for success you see the new york

mets one of the highest payrolls in baseball whether that out of its sense late august this season really before that um so so it's more money does not always equal more success but sometimes it does take a look at the lost angelo stodgers case and point exhibit a so hopefully the marlins can kind of continue the approach that they have with a little bit more funds and a little bit more means and kind of narrow the gap a little bit on the dodgers and the yankees and the fillies and the braves of the world so i do think if a salary cap gets implemented it will only help the marlins and if it doesn't get implemented well the the sign of hurt the marlins the marlins are where they are and their approach will not change one of the big thoughts and and and and attempts this off season from the marlins focus points is what i was looking for there one of the main focus points from this marlins team was going out and getting

more power for this marlin's team this season well last season 154 home runs ranked 27th in major league baseball this year 168 home runs marked 23rd so a little bit of an increase you know a little bit of improvement um definitely got some help from aroberto and kona and you know kind of becoming power hitters that the marlins didn't exactly expect this year stowers off to a slow start this season came on towards the end listen i like all those guys all those guys good players marlins need to go out and get a power back they need to go out and get a power back preferably a right handed power bat that can mash home runs um the marlins don't have that guy in the middle they're lined up the three four five guy that can just go out there and get you 30 home runs you know the marlins limped to someone getting 25 home runs this season and listen it didn't help that guys like Christopher morel and Christopher morel was brought in to become a little bit of a power guy

and hold down that first base spot absolute flop right there i mean this guy was you didn't do anything for the marlins he didn't really do much of anything for the marlins no home runs on the season for my emmy um the only home running did have came against the marlins when he was playing for the met so Christopher morel and the marlins just it's like oil and water they just don't they don't work together um and then you know forcing the layoha menna's thing all season long that didn't help the power numbers as well the early season Austin Slater experiment that didn't work out at all um and then Augustine Ramirez he was a major let down this season as well you know he was a major power guy for this team last season i think 21 last year um goldies guaranteed of the year was him to hit 25 um just missed it just missed it i think he had three um this season this season so yeah i gusty and really get it done for me there but um but that's one thing the

marlins need to focus on go get a power back this off season another thing i really want them to focus on is shut up the back end of your rotation you know i i like janson junk i like Tyler Phillips those are good players and you know those are good players and i don't hate if that's who the marlins believe in but if you're gonna do that treat them like a starter you know Phillips Phillips got put in every single kind of row it was like the marlins spun the wheel and said okay where's Phillips playing today like i i didn't like that at all like if you're gonna make him a starter make him a starter and if he's gone five scoreless let him go out into six then same thing is true for janson junk but i want the marlins to go out and spend some money on a guy not a christ paddock that obviously didn't work um but someone who had a decent season this season a veteran pitcher whose eRA is in the threes or the fours i don't want any projects where the guy had a six four eight eRA last year and the marlins are oh we can fix them no get a proven guy that

can shore up the back end of that rotation listen you know go get show head otani but get a guy in here that can compete because the marlins have the roster to compete you know Joe max only gonna get better oh in case he's only gonna get better auto low p as an Xavier Edwards those are strong up the middle guys aerobrger Hernandez has become a player Javier Sonoma he's an everyday guy he's a budding superstar according to Pete Bendix so go get a pitching staff that can match these guys you know you have Yuri sandy and max get one or two more guys and you really have something here an exciting bullpen as well um Josh actness is coming back we saw he could do with the end of this season Anthony benders getting healthy big michael peterson had a great year this year the marlins have a leg to stand on here so i'm excited to see what they can do this off season and hopefully next this time next season we're talking about playoff baseball in south florida for the Miami marlins i do think next year is the make it or break it year for this marlins

team um so you know we'll see what happens but i do think the foundation and the building blocks are there and the marlins did what they needed to do this season in order to look at next season and say okay we're ready because you had last year is kind of the ahead of schedule year this year was the on schedule year saw some flashes but didn't quite get there next year's the year you got to get 85 plus wins you got to be fighting for a playoff spot um you got to have a better record against the braves and the fillies and the padrays you know the padrays i threw in there but oh and six against the padrays this year killed us killed the marlins this year um so i'm looking for better i'm looking for better but that's gonna do it um it's been an absolute pleasure and absolute honor for me to be on this show this season um i want to thank the folks that locked on for giving me this opportunity this year it's been a blast i wish i could keep doing it but life gets in the way

schedules get in the way and that's just the fact of the matter right now um i trust the locked on folks i'm sure they're gonna put you in good hands next season um but it's been a pleasure and it's been an honor thank you all for you know kind of counting on me for your everyday marlin's content um i had a blast interacting with you guys getting to know some of you guys um it's been fantastic and i want to thank my partner Ethan i as well i know he's not on this show right now but me and him have worked together all season long we went to this past sundays game we said all year we gotta get to a game we gotta get to a game we gotta get to a game finally at the buzzer we got in there on sunday and what a fun one it was um marlin's get the win five to three we said farewell to Tommy Hutton which by the way Tommy Hutton congratulations on a fantastic career what a perfect cherry on top way to end it had rich waltz come back and say goodbye to him calling ending with him and then griffin kona and uh homer while rich was on the call so it was all kind

of the stars aligning for Tommy Hutton and the marlins to have a good good bow you know wrap a good bow on this season and then sand y'all contra coming in and getting the save so what a beautiful way to end this season what a beautiful way for me to end my lock down marlin's ten year i'm not gonna drag this thing out i love you i hopefully you guys love me back i gave it my absolute all this season and i hope you guys enjoy um so that's gonna do it for me um as always you know i wish everyone the best i wish the marlins the best um hopefully this time next year we're talking about a playoff series um an anal wild card or maybe we get the buy and we're talking about who we're gonna see in the divisional round um put let's manifest it here folks marlins manifest so that's gonna do it for me i want to thank everyone for everything this season um have a good day have a good week have a good off season here um and as always go marlins
