Oscars Tie: Musical Comedy & Dystopian Film Share Best Live Action Short

The singers, an 18-minute musical comedy, and two people exchanging saliva, a 36-minute French dystopian story, both took home the award. This marks just the seventh tie in the Academy's nearly 100-year history. Median Camille Nanjiani announced the winners and kept the crowd laughing despite the unexpected twist. He joked that the short film category would now take twice as long, then let each team have their moment on stage. The directors could not hide their excitement. Sam A. Davis from the singers called it a while moment they never saw coming. For the other film, co-directors Natalie Moustayata and Alexandra Singh rushed up, with Singh pushing through his speech even after the mic cut off. Ties are not entirely new at the Oscars. The last one came in 2013 for best sound editing between Skyfall and Zero Dark 30.
