There were a couple of low scoring games. There was a chaotic game in Edmonton, but all in all huts feels pretty good to have hockey back on the TV. It is nice. I think a Kachiyov guard there what day it was, but you know why it's an important Wednesday. It's the first Wednesday of hockey, and that is a big thing. And I, you know, the games were exciting again. You know, I think my perspective going into this was, was I going to notice that there was no preseason, that there was only a few games like, was there sloppiness? Where was it at? But all in all, I thought it was pretty impressive for a lot of teams, and a lot of players that are questioning their opening night games. Yeah, there was a little bit of that, and we'll talk about it in a couple of minutes here. Steven Ellis is our guest today. He's going to talk about the debut for Gavin McKenna and give us a little bit of a dive into this year's rookie class. We're also going to talk about some news out of Colorado, a couple of pieces of news out of Colorado actually. So a lot coming up today on the show. The oily accountant is in. I recognize them from Owen every day. He says 83 games to go. And yeah, that's kind of the vibe around oil country after last night's game.
We'll save that for a minute though and start with, let's start in Toronto actually. Because Creole Marchenko is the flavor of the week here. We talked yesterday about the left wing, right wing kind of balance in Toronto. But I was actually my first kind of observation of the season. Marchenko on his off wing actually really worked. He generated four chances off the rush according to sport logic. And I really, that to me is the difference between him and Nyes when you go back to this trade. I felt like Marchenko was really able to create a lot of his own chances. Sometimes almost out of nothing. Yeah, he's a dynamic player, right? With his speed element that he brings to the game, he's going to be able to create. There was a few chances there. There was one I distinctly remember where he's coming on the left side. It's an outside inside move. He gets a great shot off with Dolbish is right there. And I think that was kind of the storyline for me in this game was Dolbish being able to answer the call when needed, right? There's the goal that starts the game off where I've been in that situation. I remember my first start with Nashville. It was in, I think it was in Chicago.
It was like, want to start the season first shot of the game went in. Man, it is devastating to start a season that first shot goes in. You have to stick with it. And I thought he'd be a little more porous after that, but he was solid. William Neiland or God both. He looked very dynamic at times. And the first goal is kind of a rare miss by Suzuki swinging by a guy instead of kind of hitting and sticky for a guy who won the selfie trophy. But Marchenko brings a big element to this team. The guy that really stood out for me and I think why we can see Matthew Nisbeen moved out was Eastern Cowan last night. Eastern Cowan is ready to be a big role player on this team. And Marchenko is going to create a lot of offense for this Toronto broke the year. Yeah, again, he led the evening if you want to call it that out of the five games. No one generated more scoring chances off the rush than Cariel Marchenko last night. So a good debut for him. I know some leaf spends were frustrated with Darren Radish. And of course in true Toronto fashion or I should say NHL fashion we have our first big controversy of the year because Sergey Babroski didn't let Gavin McKenna go out for his own solo rookie lap.
You make anything of that. I think it's hilarious. I think it's just a lot of fan bases that want to try make a big story out of something in Toronto. Yeah, again, I just think it's because of where it is. And Bob is obviously sent his routine, but it's a goalie. He just kind of skates out to the red line and does this thing. I wouldn't think too much about it. And I think for Bob, he's got to be more worried about stopping Pox and making timely saves to help this team. It's going to be a good storyline. I know we're going to dive into Gavin McKenna a bit more with Steven Ellis later on. And I look forward to try to break down what we saw from his first game. The Leafs fall three to the Habs. The Panthers get an OT winner from Gustav Foresling. They had to wait until there were five seconds left in overtime to finally get a goal on the board. I would hate to be the guy who took the over in that game. Whoops. A couple of other games I want to talk about before we get to what happened in Edmundton, the Bruins pick up a three nothing win over the Rangers. Shesterkin and Swaman were both excellent. And it took until same thing like final three and a half minutes of the game for there to finally be a goal after Boston got one.
They then got this beauty from J.J. Paturka. You want to talk about making a good early impression on your new team and fan base. He just absolutely walks, Braden Schneider here. Yeah, you reach I teach. That's a perfect example of it. The skill that is in today's game. And for J.J. Paturka for me, a guy that's going to be under the microscope a lot in Boston. You know, he's brought in to be a big piece. It didn't go well in Utah for him. And Buffalo obviously moved on for him. He's back in the Atlantic division. This is a huge goal. And what a play. A sneaky little release five hole. We waited all game for this. Kind of what I expected though from Shesterkin, from Swaman to be solid. Bruins might be something to mess with this year. They look very good yesterday. Yeah, we talked about it on one of our summer shows. But I really do think that they're getting overlooked a little bit in the grand scheme of things. Like they didn't lose a lot over the summer. They go and pick up a guy like J.J. Paturka, who I think playing on that team will go back to, you know, being a centerpiece of the offense instead of getting kind of lost in the shuffle like he did a bit in Utah. I think he can go back and be a 30, 35 plus even goal guy if things go his way.
So good to see Paturka get off on the right. And we're going to see the other teams. Are one and oh, Vegas golden nights, they won their home opener and Trevor Connelly, this is just kind of a fun fact. He scored a goal in his NHL debut. But just by playing in the game, he became the first Vegas golden nights draft pick from any of the last five drafts to play a game for the franchise. They trade all their picks. They trade all their prospects. But Trevor Connelly appears to be the exception. That's pretty wild. And then we also had just some vintage Patrick Kane show time. I would sit here and do the whole what year is it joke, but obviously the Vegas golden nights weren't really around when Patrick Kane was in his prime with Chicago, but he looked like prime patty Kane on this one. Yeah, he looked like prime. It's quite a goal. And again, I think a storyline that we haven't really talked about a lot this year is going to be the Vegas goal tending. And I thought Carter Hart was good. It's going to be the factor of him and in Hill this year. Can he reemerge and continue what he did off of last year? Patty Kane 37 years old. He's still able to get a done he moves well. He can make plays for me. I thought Jack Ico was the best player on the right last night just breaking down the game.
He again just controls everything. The amount of work that Jack put in in that offseason to develop to get better. He worked with a movement coach. The same movement coach that works with Christian McCaffrey in the NFL. Jack is all in. One thing I can tell you about him. He's honestly trying to evolve his game. I expect him to be that key East, keep Vegas around in the Pacific. Yeah. Three points last night. He also set up Victor Olivesin on the first goal of the game. Olivesin I know is a guy and there's people laugh on Twitter that like man they lose Doraphay have they scoop up Olivesin and listening. You're not getting 35 from Olivesin. They're going to get some good production from him. If him and Jack Ico have the chemistry that they showed last night. And with all of that behind us. Huts let's talk about the Edmonton Oilers. I was sitting there last night at Rogers plays with honestly just a big smile on my face. It's like all these expectations for Edmonton Babcock. Everything that went that went on over the summer and they were down 52 to the Vancouver Connucks. Now they eventually stormed back. We'll talk about that but the more things change the more they stay the same because goal
tending is at the center of this conversation. Tristan Jari allows six goals on 23 shots yesterday and there were more than a couple that had the fans in Edmonton stirring. They gave them the Bronx cheer at one point. It was ugly. And I guess maybe my question for you in this because I'm going to be live in about three hours on O.N.E. talking to 700 to 1000 Oilers fans and a bunch of them are going to tell me Huts but they were breakaways and two on ones. How should I respond to those people who say but they were breakaways and two on ones? I think watch Jacob Dolbych what he was able to do in Montreal and look at a couple of those key saves he made on Austin Matthews. There's a pop up play another couple big ones back door passes. This is the NHL now that's what we have to wrap our head around. This isn't the NHL from 10 15 20 years ago when I first broke in where there was 10 to 12 quality scoring chances in a game. Now that's per purity need to make saves and again there's moments in this game where
yes the defense needs to be better. Yes he needs to be more insulated. But there's also goals that went in the net where you need saves and there's two of them that like stick out to me I know Pat has the video here. The factor is you have to make saves at key times and momentum swings in game. This is a two to hockey game and look where this shot is taken from. That's just inside the top of the circle. I don't want to act like that like trust me I've given up bad goals in my career here but that's a routine save. This is the NHL that has to be saved in that moment where they're at and that's a devastating factor. And then the momentum was able to fight back and get a point is a bit of a win. But this is the same thing that has hurt them in the past and it's very concerning and Jari did not look very good last year day. No the numbers weren't good Jari after the game. I mean to his credit I suppose he took some amount of accountability for how poor he played when Mike Babcock was asked about it after the game and asked about Jari struggling. He said quote it was clear everyone knows that so might as well move on but it would surprise absolutely nobody.
It's expected Devin Levi will get the start on Thursday when they shift to Vancouver for the second half of this home and home but yeah I mean thoughts maybe you can talk to the confidence angle of it too like how frustrating would it be for a guy like Jari too. You go all season especially because last year went poor you go all off season you train you work hard you do all that stuff you come into camp you have a good training camp in a good preseason and then this happens in the opener. You know what I think the biggest thing you can hope is that there's just the mature to move on and he has that he just looks slow to me yesterday there's the maxes on goal where he's like deep in the crease to begin with doesn't look like he's tracking it well it goes through him again this is a pull move to his five fall and it beats him and the factor is like that's a routine save at the depth where he was at so even the tip on peterson's goal he's locked in he's just doesn't really seem like he's playing it and it might just be the fact that he's second guessing himself a little bit I think at times when you want it too much in hockey especially as a goalie it almost has that opposite effect of him being able to go out there and be free flowing and playing that so I don't think
that's the end for Tristan Jari I think this is just a great opportunity for Devon Levi to come in and say that I am ready to play in the NHL play minutes and push because if they can get some steady goal tending and the goal I think as an Edmonton orler if you can keep it to two to three goals against per game you're going to win a lot of hockey games. Yeah, Deely listen, I love you. You're in the YouTube. The first future. You're in the YouTube all the time. I hope you had a great time at your tailgate and Carolini yesterday. He comments there is not a goalie on earth that would look good in Edmonton with that team defense offense needs to help your defense. Man, pull up natural statric. They had the conucks had 1.65 expected goals for in that hockey game. 1.65 expected goals for they scored six to Huts Point. You're allowed to make a save and listen, oilers fans have been doing this. People have been dunking on the oilers for years because it's always breakaways and two on ones. Other goalies stop breakaways and two on ones. Good goalies can stop breakaways and two on ones. Well, you think about what has been hidden for years on certain teams, right? And for one that stands out for me, I think about
Nashville early Peck of René days. He used to keep teams in games. You think about Vasylowski. He makes teams better. Sir Rokin, what he first saw coming in league. What he saw last year. Guys find if you need an upper echelon goalie, they can find a way to make saves. It's that consistency. And that being said, I know he's a Carolina fan. Carolina got saves when they needed it. They weren't the best defense of team. They're high energy skating teams throughout the playoffs, but they got saves when they needed it. And sometimes it's not necessarily like how many you make, it's when you make them. That goal that went in, it's a two-to-hockey game at that point. Like, how does that go in the net? It's just something that is deflating. And then there's just history that starts to creep in. Then it's hard to play when you're second guest in your goal, Tony. I think that's a big factor right now. Is the doubt starts to creep in. And it's very contagious to play a free wheeling hockey when you doubt your goalie. Yeah, Desert Lab. Hats, Bussie look great again last night, despite the old loss. He did. The Cain's only, but you're right, but like you need to get saves. The Cain's lost one nothing. They each side got saved. So,
I don't know, that's the frustration, Emton. Pat, I saw you had the Bouchard board up there. Let's quickly touch on that. The first defenseman in NHL history to record five points in their season opener. He logged over 25 minutes of time on ice. A hat trick picks up two apples as well. That was an all-world game from Bouch. Yeah, that was something else. I know you donated your hat here. So, we're going to start to go fund me to try to get that bad boy replaced here. And for Bouchard, you know, what else does he need to do? And I know he's going to take he, right? He's minus two on a five point. I eat in there's the factor of the Dn plus two. Sorry, yeah, plus two. I thought it was minus two on the other one when we first pulled it up. But the factor is for him, he just needs to keep rolling here. And I think they just need to find a way to protect his own. And this is why you brought Babs in though. So, the mistakes that are glaring in the video, the changes they're going to make are going to be there. I didn't think we were going to walk right into this season and just have a totally new Edmonton Oilers team because of Babcock. I think it's going to take time and it's going to take some pressure on their better players. But he keeps
producing like this. It's going to be really hard to stop the Edmonton Oilers if they can get a saver too. Yeah, I think that's that's a big point. It's a great opportunity for Devon Lever. Like you said, a couple of minutes go. All right. Let's move along here. We're going to do a little percentage game on a Wednesday based on a couple of teams from last night. The first one I got for you, the Leafs. Obviously, couldn't get the offense quite going. You mentioned how good Dobish was. But let's say we'll call we're calling it kind of overreaction season for the next week. But after watching the Leafs last night, seeing Omar Chanko and McKenna look, Hots, there is a blank percent chance that the Maple Leafs are a playoff team this year. I still think it's a pretty good percentage. I'm going to say 20%. I think 20% they're a playoff team. The Atlantic is star studded, but I think they find their way. I just think last night they just ran into a team that is not as like the changes weren't as much, right? I think the Leafs are trying to catch a moving train right now. I think it's going to take a little bit of time with the short and preseason and where they're at. But I think they are a better team now personnel wise than they were last year, Ty. Yeah, Bet 365 has them by the way at minus 110. So
they're going pure coin flip 50 50 either side. You're a little bit colder on that. The Vancouver Conucks were feeling good. Max Sassin after the game talked about how there's no egos in that room. And I think that's a big part of the culture that Mani Malholtra is up putting forth. They are betting odds favorites to come dead last in the NHL this year. Did they change your tune last night or did they change your opinion of them last night? Huts your question. There's a blank percent chance that Max still come dead last. Well, I think there's a good percentage. I still think it's like a 30% chance. I don't know if Lankinick can carry the mail with them co out where they're at. I do think the fact that they have younger bodies injected in the lineup, Mani Malholtra, it's going to be a step forward. I don't think there's just going to be horrible and walk right into that position. But they're going to be in a tough spot when you start thinking about 84 games in the depths that they have. Yeah, that's fair. One piece of news and then we'll get to our friends Steven Ellis the Colorado Avalanche this morning on the day of their season opener announced a four year extension for head coach Jared Bednar. The second longest tenured head coach in the
league. He's roughly two and a half years behind John Cooper for that top spot. He's entering his 11th season as the head coach of the Aves. They've made the playoffs every single year, but one since he's been at the helm. He is the winningest coach in franchise history. He is the, he is the six best winning percentage of all time in the playoffs amongst head coaches who've coach at least 50 games in the postseason like all of the numbers, the accolades. It's been a wildly successful run for Jared Bednar and it actually is pretty crazy when you look back on the timeline of him like he took over when it was that weird. Remember Patrick Wad just basically quit on the team like that was an odd odd time around Colorado. Bednar stepped into a not so great situation and obviously has made the most of it. If he if he rolls out and makes it through this entire contract extension, he's going to be the bench boss there for 15 seasons, which is pretty crazy, but a deserved extension for Jared Bednar and honestly for him like this is a guy we talked about it last year with Jesse Montana. Hell we talked about it a day yesterday with Steve Eater's
if things weren't going to go well in Colorado, that's a coach who you kind of saw as like, oh, one year left, do they think they need a new voice? That's obviously not the case of the extension dropping to that. Yeah, I think the support too comes from within with the players, right? Because we know how Nathan McKinnan is, you know he is a demanding guy, so he obviously has built that relationship with him. And for Bednar, it's kind of like one of those sneaky coaches that kind of came off the radar, took that job and has run with it. So that's the other factors of coach like you get the right squad, you can really extend it into quite the career. And the factor is now if he ever was to get fired, it would just be pretty much wait a few months until someone else comes knocking for another job. Absolutely on that front. And also with contracts being what they are, guarantees them four more years of getting paid even if he doesn't make it through the pinwheel, which is always the dream gig. I've said it a thousand times to be one of those coaches who's like, I mean, look at Chris Noblock, Chris Noblock and Edmund and his extension didn't even kick in and they gassed him. He's got three years of getting paid like three four million bucks a season. Yeah, him and Ruby are just hanging out drinking my ties somewhere in Hawaii collecting
their money. All right, let's get to our guests for today. Always a pleasure to welcome our friends Stephen Ellis to the program our daily face-off prospect analyst and there was quite a prospect to analyze yesterday not first overall pick Gavin McKenna makes his debut for the Toronto Maple Leaf Stephen. Let's just start there. What did you make a McKenna in his first NHL game? It was a learning curve and first off you know I know there was a lot of people talking about the rookie lap thing. I think you know random user 69 on Twitter probably cares more than Gavin McKenna did in that situation there he cares more about you know being NHL player but watching him last night it felt like he was out of position a lot it felt like he was kind of struggling to keep up with the pace but that's to be expected like it's one thing to have a couple preseason games where you know he was planning against auto as second tier guys or Montreal second tier guys and it's one thing to to kind of get used to that and another to go up against a team that nearly made the Stanley Cup final in your first game that's a lot of pressure and it turns out yeah the NHL is a hard league to play it so I think it's something where I'm not too worried about
him there wasn't a great performance you saw a couple of the goals there it looked like he was just kind of like he lost his man or just lost a tracking there but overall I still think this is a guy that's really smart really skilled and is going to be a really big part of that Maple Leaf team but it's going to probably just take a bit of time for him to get used to it like that was did it almost feel like last night that maybe the NHL preseason shockingly should have been a little longer like it felt like watching the games around a week they're just a lot of just players making a ton of mistakes you typically wouldn't have seen if they had you know four or five or six games to kind of prepare yes even I agree and I think yesterday doing my starting goalies when I had to pick a team I took the habs just because of the fact there was more familiar faces in the lineup and I thought it'd be easier them to get to their game that they know how to play where the Leafs had such a big you know change of people coming in and you're trying to establish it with such a short preseason but you know McKenna was good there's a lot of good plays is he still your call their favorite there's a lot of good young guys I think of Mark
Thorn and Stenberg and Frontel and all these players win the callers he's still the guy that's off the list for me it's Porta Martone and I think part of it is you look at the guys who go straight from the draft to the NHL it is often very hard for those guys to go out there and win the call patrol V I understand that you know you look at Matty Schaefer last year was kind of a special situation there but you know Macklence LeBrine he had his struggles when he first came to the NHL right it wasn't a perfect year Conor Bordard same thing like it is hard for these first overall picks to make it work but when you look at a guy who's a little older like Porta Martone that's where I think he's got that experience he looked really good in college last year he was fantastic down the stretch of the flyers he was really good playing with Sydney Crosby and in Celebinea points the world championships I really liked that there and if I had to pick which of the first first round picks from 2026 that I like more for the call there it is actually you've our Stenberg and part of that is he had that full year of playing pro hockey last year and he had that really good opportunity to play the World Championship where he was a Flucas Raymond and
looked fantastic there and I feel like he's just a bit more pro ready right now that doesn't necessarily mean I think he's going to maybe be the better player in the long run you know like a guy playing pro at 18 years old and a pro playing first hockey you know close to 19 years old to me doesn't matter what matters though I think is Stenberg just is in a situation here low pressure the sharks are going to be a really fun team he's going to play all these key situations here alongside McLeod Celebinea I think that's something where I would give him the slight edge there but it's going to be a really entertaining cold or thing like I put out my list my top 20 prospects and it feels like every year we're like oh this is a really good pro but like I had to Albert Smith to like 17th or something like that and I mean I was like well I could probably make an argument for him in like the top five as well Sebastian Kosa another guy there so it's a really strong call their race and I'm very excited for it. I wanted to talk a little bit more about McKenna with you because you made some interesting observations and I think it kind of ties into what Steven just said we're like Stenberg you know as played pro has played against men and all of that stuff and
Hutz was that maybe something or is that maybe an adjustment that McKenna's going to have to make where like you know you're now playing in a league where every player is a big or mostly a big strong man guys who've been playing this for you know you you talk before the show about like the McKenna one-on-ones with Matheson where Matheson just like made it look easy stopping them. Yes Steven there's something that came up before the show there was a play in the offensive zone where McKenna has his back to the boards Puxx exposed Matheson's coming out of him and he tries to pull like a forward toe drag standing still and again I think this is the habits of a guy that's been able to have his way with players where if you're not doing it at high speeds like we saw the JJ Paturka goal you're better off to make a play to put it in space and a term that always stuck with me when I was in the NHL and coming up with players is what play do you make when you don't have a play those are the players you want when you don't have something are you making the right play and at some maybe I think in his game needs to improve to maybe keep up with the Stenberg for that fact you know yeah 100 percent I agree and I think the one thing that really
kind of turned his season around last year was when he went to the world juniors and he got to learn from the hunters and they really kind of focused with him on how to be a more detailed oriented player and to react to things in real time because he's really smart and he can make these great moves but like you said that it's one thing to do it against the in the Kultnerz on the state university defenseman you'll never hear about ever again and it's another to do it against you know like math laying Hudson things like that so you kind of have to really adjust to that but that's something that he is such a smart player and it feels like anytime there's been this like negative thing about his game there was a point I remember where scouts were like he doesn't shoot enough and then all of a sudden he puts up a lot of goals in the W H L's like okay yeah you could do that okay he's not playing at speed quick enough or he's not he's being almost not selfish enough and then he had this eight point game in the NCAA last year and it's like okay yeah he could do this stuff so it feels like it's just going to take him a bit of time but it's at the same time like I think honestly that short preseason really kind of hurt him and it hurt a couple other rookies here where it's like you didn't really get a chance to really prove himself
you only got to play those two games and I feel like learning from guys like Tavaris learning from Matthews those guys that were first overall picks and understand the pressure and how to adapt in that spotlight I think that's something that's actually going to come to to McCannock quite quickly I wanted to ask you about the just sticking on kind of the Kultner theme like I was going through past winners and I can't my memories not good enough to look at this list of you know from Schaefer Hudson Badard Beneers Sider Caprizov McCarpeathers and like when was the last time we were truly surprised where a rookie came out of nowhere to win the Kultner do you remember the last time that like you didn't have someone maybe in your pop five that ended up winning the award see like I the first name that came to mind and it was way before I was doing any of us was Steve Mason like that's not like yeah just because you know it's tough for a goalie to go out there and win that Oak Vauntary O'Native so I got to love him of course but for him like yeah remember that being like wow like him just having this huge Kultner season but like yeah I know it's it's we don't typically see
guys kind of come out of nowhere like you look at Jacob Dolby's last year I don't think anyone expected him to he is impactful as he was and ended up being you know one of those top Kultner candidates and like that's something that's fun I got to start coming out tomorrow but some of the underrated guys like you know could a TJ Hughes come out of nowhere for Colorado on play of big Roy I was expecting Bradley Nado to make the hurricanes out of out of camp because okay well they needed a guy who can go out there and generate offense he's been very productive at every level they don't have self-service right now and they still sent him down to the HL they think want to make sure he's ready to go I thought that would have been a very interesting case but yeah you know like you look at the top level here you look at the martin you look at the stepber can you look at the mechanic and they all have exceptional arguments to be that Kultner favorite and what if it's not one of those guys what a fecal Bjork comes out of nowhere what if you know like there's it's actually a really fun class with really good depth at every single position yeah I think that's so interesting to and I think your Steve Mason point is so good it's kind of jogged my memory thinking about him you know a third round pick no expectation as a goalie to right to come into that situation and
step right in is this kind of what we have to expect now in the new NHL because of players that make that adjustment immediately where you know in the chat was buzzing about you know being in the American League learning how to play the game the right way and then not be put in the spotlight so quick or is this just the new NHL it's more of a development league just as it is a league that you're trying to win in well really depends because I think you know I think the one thing that was kind of brought up to me last year with Eastern Cowan where I thought he should have spent most of your NHL he spent the year in the NHL and the argument was like would you bother him learn from a John Tavares or would you rather him you know play of Logan Shaw and I think that's something where when you get to play with those quality players you learn those habits and not to say you know these guys in the NHL aren't good players they're obviously great and Logan Shaw just one the the call to cup and the Marley's were great but it still feels like something where you want these guys playing at the best talent the best leaders the the best mentors they could possibly get and and learn from those mistakes I think another good example of that is is a party at Comjok and Ottawa
you can kind of tell that his skating still is not great and that he maybe makes a bit too many mistakes in his own zone but would he be better off you know getting exposed a little bit in Ottawa than being the guy who could dominate in the NHL I think so because you've got to be able to adapt to all these different roles like McKenna go into the NHL to me he wouldn't really learn a lot there he needs to be playing the toughest competition every single night with Cardiac and Chuck again I think he's got to go out there and play these cold matchups he's got to go out there and have to deal with you know these like the Nick Suzuki's the Cole Caulfields the Tage Thompson's the Austin Matthews of that division and learn like okay here's how I adapt to that here's how I have to really adjust my skate here's how I have to do that I think in a lot of cases that's better and I'm usually one that likes to preach the patient routes I like guys staying one year extra in college I like these guys going to A H L and not being rushed too early but at the same time you know when you've got on the lead player like McKenna I don't know like there were points in the NCAA last year when he really clicked that I don't think he really gained anything from the
last like two months of the season like I feel like at that point like okay he's already outgrown this I don't think going the A H L is going to be good for him I think he needs he playing with those top players having to figure out how to outthink those top players and go from there because you're going to A H L there's still a lot of those guys out there where their sole jobs to try and headhunt and still try to kill you so is this that make a ton of sense for McKenna no so I like where he is I like where Yakum Chuk is and I think it'll be interesting kind of see what happens. I like that you bring that up actually because it's not like you know you can paint every prospect with sort of one brush here like and people will always throw the line of like oh the NHL's not a development league but when you have these players who you're trying to grow into being center pieces for your franchise like yeah sometimes you do just have to deal with the growing pains like I love the Yakum Chuk thing like the only way for him to learn how to shut down players as good as Tage Thompson is for him to play against players as good as Tage Thompson so it's not just as simple and I see some people on the YouTube chat going like no I hate that they you know rush young players what's wrong with the American league it's a good league like yeah for maybe 80% of prospects
that's true but there's a percentage where it's like no you just have to deal with the growing mistakes short term pain long term gain yeah yeah like like there's a reason why NHL teams with their pretty smart development teams for the most part like you know some teams like the New York Rangers question me what they're doing with some players but like for the most part like their science behind this they have the analytics to suggest why some of these guys should be playing the NHL over the NHL a lot of it is just comes down to the quality of players they'd play you like you're with again a vgo Bjork he could have gone to the NHL he already left a Swedish team like they could have sent him down to Manitoba but you know the moves aren't gonna be a real contender this year so yeah you'd be playing a ton of minutes but when he gets called back up to the NHL he might not be the first line 22 minutes and a guy he might be the third line guy trying to adjust and that's something where having to kind of fight your way up the lineup is also not a bad thing too like there's a reason why scouts really like those hardworking for flying grindy style players that you'll find in the draft you know like a chase herring to do just sign of the Calgary flames like those players get a lot of love because they have to work harder than anybody else
to go out there and get noticed and if you like in the NHL like a guy like McKenna could go out there and learn that yeah I can chuck another one where you saw the offense he put up last year I feel like you can go down to a level where you might be too good for it but maybe not grading up for the next level but if you go back to that lower level you can get lazy you can get comfortable and that could be something that the really hurt players so and again with those two guys in particular and you know I can chuck the McKenna I like the idea of just throwing them to the wolves like with Toronto like it you were one of the worst teams last year we still expect McKenna will probably be better than most other options Toronto has on that left wing on the second line if he has a two-goal performance tonight against the Islanders if anyone talking about his slow start in game one I don't think so no I know I see even as always man oh sorry go ahead let's go ahead oh I just think it's such a good point too I think it's a happy mix it right like some guys needed some guys don't I think back to like sometimes just getting to see what the NHL's like and then going back to the American being like I'm not even close I need more and I think that's where it's that happy medium of like tie to your
case I think each individual has its own case every player's development is different that's the thing it's not linear it's not you know it's not going from college football to the NFL like this this is a difficult thing to figure out every player has different needs and they all gonna be treated differently all right Stephen great stuff as always man thanks for popping on we'll chat with you soon thanks so much guys all right let's get to some asked DFOs here we got a couple of interesting ones one does the better news shut down the David Carl speculation yeah I mean listen he's got a four-year extension I think we're good from the David Carl stuff specifically in Colorado for probably two or three years here someone else has have still need someone the habs still need someone between Slavkovsky and Demadov online too who do you think they could go get for the deadline I mean the name that pops into my head is probably Ryan O'Reilly because again my prediction is that Nashville is going to go into a full-on sell job but the other interesting thing there is
remember when he went to Toronto and it just like didn't really work for him in that big market right he went as a deadline rental and he never really fit in I'm curious if that maybe scares some teams away from viewing O'Reilly is a pure rental yeah there might be two like he obviously didn't love that market where he's at and I think about potential guys obviously all of her captain being out right now he's going to fill in that role when healthy and then like maybe off the board would be like a mark shifley if Winnipeg is just falling a hard hell bucks get moved out maybe that becomes a big piece that he could be moved out and then next thing you know you're looking at a pretty dynamic team and what in Montreal you know what else is going to be the big narrative if Pittsburgh stinks you know Habs fans Habs fans will be doing it I don't think normal other other hockey that's what Habs fans will be doing the whole Sydney crowds be thinking at some point this year of Pittsburgh's 15 points out of the playoffs around the deadline one more because I know this is going to come up and I want to just get in front of it people are going to hammer the oilers have to make an offer for Connor Hella Buck Connor Hella Buck doesn't want to play in Canada and listen maybe things change because he's sitting out and he's missing money and the jets go hey
we have a trade if you want to go to Edmundton we'll get you out of Winnipeg but I do not believe for a second that Connor Hella Buck will wave his no movement clause to play in Canada he wants to go south of the border I do not think it's realistic to sit here and have big conversations about what could the oilers put together what's the package look like for Hella Buck because I do not think Connor Hella Buck wants to play in Canada anymore simple as that. Yeah I think that is the factor of where when he where he's at and how they got to this point was to get him to an American market in summary wants to be so I think that's status quo now it's just going to be like what are they willing to do how much are they going to bend to make it work for Hella Buck or they're just let him sit I was thinking about that the other day how much money he's losing per day and I would hate to see it it's going to keep adding up and especially like I said when we first started this Hella Buck talk the owners got to hell a lot more money than Connor Hella Buck does. Oh yeah Alberta Shanks said wrong tie Connor Hella Buck didn't say that I know that Connor Hella Buck didn't say but that doesn't mean it's not true like again there's just read the writing on the
wall people again and I'm one more I'm going to make one more comment to De Lee because I'm in a fighting mood with him today but that's fine that's what the debates are all about our boy Colby's in the chat said did I miss the talk about the oilers De Lee says yes Tyler got mad because I said no goalie can help with that team defense I went to money puck as they published their analytics from last night Kristen Jari minus four goals saved above expected minus four goals saved look look four minus three Lee Lee that is absolutely fucking insanely bad like again Kristen Jari can bounce back the oilers could maybe give up one less two on one sure minus four goal saved above expected is beyond ridiculous. Oh that's crazy 34g's the day someone pulled up with hell he's making what he's missing out on that's insane that's American too so you scrunched that dollar that can buy you some nice stuff and Winnipeg Manitoba so it'll be wild to see how this goes the oilers need a goalie they need some deep they just need everything it's game one
if this is what we do buddy at least we got something to break down and this is just not made up situations this is the real deal. I love it all right let's get to our betting segment brought to you by bet three six five as the old saying goes you can't teach speed whether it's an odd man rushing to the attacking zone a perfectly lined up check against the boards are a well time slap shop from the face off spot speeds the ultimate game changer on the ice and the same goes at bet three six five whether it's the early bird specials boosted pregame odds for the instant mid game payouts with the early payout there the barn for winning early this season bet three six five the home of winning early must be 19 or older please play responsibly and I'm looking at this board and I see a whole bunch of X's pad I can't believe the oilers scored five times and dry side I don't didn't get you two points. I know just one I talked about it too I was going to pick Bouchard and probably should have done that at the end of the day. Yeah, that was I we're all kind of heavy on the oilers here it really cost us when I had the
Bruins that late win I thought I was looking good in the Edmonton late an egg and we've already beat that horse let's move on to a new day here boys. All right let's get to our picks for tonight I'm keeping it simple no parlay for me I like the Colorado avalanche and I am a noted LA Kings hater so why not Avs puckline they're on home ice it's paying plus money I know Peter Labio let usually gives his new teams a bump that's fine I understand the logic there but game one of the season I have no problem fading the LA Kings and taking the Avs minus one and a half at plus 135 how do you got today I'm going simple I'm going with a Porter mortone anytime goal as Steven said kind of the front runner for the call or trophy plus 205 and in fact every single player in this game on bet 365 is plus 200 or more so you could get cross via plus 210 if you want so just someone has a score in that game but I like Porter mortone he had four goals in nine games to start the season last year and we're not counting playoffs for now but Porter mortone goal in the opener
what about you Huts how do you I like that pick too we just talked about him for the call there he's going to be buzzing I'm going to take the Toronto Maple Leafs here on home ice again as they're back to back with the New York condors minus 120 I think Anthony Stollers has a lot to prove look for him to be saw a little bounce back hopefully here for the Leafs. All right there you go our three picks for bet 365 the way we're going to do it this year is at the end of every week someone's going to win a week so our contest this year is going to be who can have the most successful week so a different spin on how we've usually done the betting talk here and to wrap up the show with a little bit of garbage time hot so I kind of noticed you had a different little pep in your step the last couple of days did I did we happen to miss the induction ceremony you the fourth western Ontario sports hall of fame look at you with the suit in your black wow on nice I'm glad to get my family off there just my ugly buddies there they're pretty short so it makes me look pretty good in my suit but yeah we got inducted Saturday night it was a long event but it was a lot of fun and I fought back a few tears I thought I'd be pretty good but just
doing it with my kids and my family and everybody there was a pretty special night for for me and my friend. Well in all seriousness congratulations I didn't know it was on Saturday I just saw you posted all the pictures on Instagram yesterday so I feel bad that I missed a chance to properly congratulate you on Monday. Oh that's okay because buddy I'm not a pitcher taker my wife had sent me those last night so I put them on there I even felt weird putting it on there but it was a pretty cool night and honestly and it was a lot of fun we didn't get to go to Toronto like my son thought we were headed to but it was I'm a T. Bay Hall of Famer now so it's pretty cool. Yeah that is that's really really cool I know we talked about it over the summer who else was in the class with you because it's not a hockey it's not the north bus to Ontario hockey of him it's a sports hall of him. It's everything so there's actually so two people from last year involved one was Don Boyd who's the headscout of the Ottawa Senators who's from the area he's from Dryden so he kind of just grew up at hockey took it over there was another martial artist who was like a world champion in Karate there was a five pin bowler who was an absolute beauty I think he was buzzing back the Bud lights quicker than they could pour him out and then there was another there was another team
that was honored and now in cup champion team so though I knew a bunch of those boys so they were beauties because they were like they were apologizing to me for rooting night because this was like a lifetime achievement award they're like yeah we just got a crew together for a weekend tournament we ended up winning it so it was it was a lot of fun and you know just some of the names that are in the Hall of Fame we got to go there and see it it was it was a pretty cool moment. All right great stuff. YouTube chat awesome as always there was a whole bunch of buzz and around in there today and I love seeing that I love the back and fourth love making that a part of the show that's a wrap on a Wednesday edition of the program another busy night coming this evening in the NHL three more games on tap including the Battle of Pennsylvania between the flyers and penguins so we'll be back tomorrow to break it all down and joy your Wednesday see you tomorrow 11 a.m. Easter.
