It was the most college football outcome possible. Remember when I took this hat on this show, brought to you by the game caps of course. And I threw it across my office and said no. No, they're not going to do they can't score more than 14 points. Turns out 17 points was the maximum. Although when you consider the starting field position for the go ahead touched them, I think that's a little bit more on Michigan's defense than Michigan's offense. But guess what? There are two sides of the football.

And I believe in Kyle Wittingham at Michigan. I have no doubt that he is going to succeed and build them into a conference and probably national title contender once again. That is not going to be this season beating Oklahoma told me a lot more about Oklahoma than it did about Michigan. Does Michigan have a high floor? Apparently not because they played Western Michigan and well just about lost the game. Officially they didn't lose the game, but you know, we're not going down that rabbit hole here. I don't believe that Kyle Wittingham wants to play Bryce Underwood a quarterback. He's already hinted that his job security is not indefinite. And Bryce Underwood has not made significant strides as a passer. And I know Michigan's about defense. They're about run game. And that can raise your floor.

But what was the difference between the Michigan teams that were good, even won the big 10 and went to the playoff. And the ones or the one, I should say, that actually won the national championship. You went from Cadmack to Mara to JJ McCarthy. And in theory, you have JJ McCarthy, part two behind center in Bryce Underwood. But this is not going to be good enough against the defenses of the big 10 to consistently score enough points. You can't ask your defense to bail you out for an entire season. I didn't have Michigan as a playoff team coming into the year. I didn't have Oklahoma's a playoff team coming into the year. And their quarterbacks are the reasons why I still do not believe, even though they are so gosh darn good on the other side of the ball. I thought this would be a low scoring game. Did not think the points would get run up. And that turned out to be the case. I was on the wrong side freely admitted, not trying to hide the ball.

I bailed on my preseason Wolverines pick. That doesn't count. I bailed. That's on me. I underestimated how bad Oklahoma's offense is with John Matier back there. But Bryce Underwood was nine of 17 passing for 111 yards. Yeah, he ran the ball well. Great. You scored 17 points. But Spencer Oklahoma's defense is really good. Notably, when you get to the big 10 championship game or try to go make a national championship run, the defense is you're playing aren't going to be very good. Notably, you're going against the mid tier teams. You're wait. No, no, I don't think that's right. I don't believe in 2027. Bryce Underwood will be the starting quarterback for the Michigan Wolverines. I think Bryce Underwood will start at a power for school elsewhere. But unless significant strides can be made, and maybe he just needs time in the system. But the way it feels to me right now,

the lack of improvement and the early messaging from Kyle Wittingham. I could see Bryce Underwood starting elsewhere in 2027. That might sound like a hot take. I really don't think that it is. So Michigan will be what I thought they would be coming into the year. 8-9-1-Team. They're good. High floor. Not pulling away from everybody because they're offense when they're not throwing the ball. To JJ Buchanan, just doesn't really exist. Their second leading receiver against Oklahoma was Savion Heider. He's awesome, by the way. Man, talk about living up to the billing. He's definitely that. Let's flip over, talk about the Oklahoma Sooners. They need a new quarterback and they need a new offensive coordinator. Those two changes need to happen. I go into every offseason evaluating teams about what I feel they need to address based on what happened during the year. This is two years in a row. What I heard a lot in this offseason, the optimistic take from Sooners Faithful was, it was the thumb injury.

It was the thumb injury. You know what? That was plausible. But once again, the Oklahoma offense cannot run the ball. I don't think they have a clear identity because they want to run the ball a little bit, but they can't, but they're an air raid offense, but they're not going to passing either. What does Oklahoma's offense do well? Has there offensive line taken a measurable step forward? No, it has not. Can they run the ball? Do they have a dynamic array of running backs that they can get the, oh, look, John Matier led the team in rushing yards and carries again. That's what they have. They have got John Matier being Superman and he is not that guy. It was worth taking a shot on Matier after what he did at Washington State. It has not clicked. I don't know how it's going to suddenly start clicking. John Matier is not good enough to win a national championship.

Ben Arbuckle is not good enough to win a national championship. Brent Vennables is. He's done it as a coordinator. I believe he can do it as a head coach. He needs a new offensive coordinator. He needs a new quarterback. Oklahoma's schedule this year is very, very hard. Very hard. They still have to play Georgia and Texas. They have New Mexico this week as a tune up for at Georgia by and then red river. Look, Texas is beatable. It's a rivalry game. They have three points and three quarters against Ohio State. Then they turned it on. But then there'll be a low. Kentucky, obviously Bon Mississippi State on the road. South Carolina, Florida. Those will be wins. Ole Miss, Texas, say, in Missouri. You should be able to beat Missouri. You should. But I'm pretty sure you're going to have the second best quarterback going into that game in Columbia last week of the regular season. Oklahoma, Dar near, lost that game at home last year.

And they did not have the level of quarterback play that Austin Simmons is giving the Tigers. So for my fan mood assessment for these two fan bases, Michigan gets a light win because you're still mathematically in play for Oklahoma. I am down in the outright lose vibe. The lowest you can go. I do not see Oklahoma getting to the college football playoff and you're just going to have to endure what you kind of suspected last year, which is don't know if our buckles will get. We'll see on McTeewell's injury thing. Let's give it another go. Up. There it is. There it is. So Oklahoma, Michigan. I didn't think either of these teams were going into the college football playoff. They played a great game. Congrats to Michigan. Mathematically saved the season. Apparently they're better when I'm on here doubting them. I mean, the last two years it hasn't been the case. But maybe now it's different. Maybe now it's different. So leave your thoughts in the comments below. Tell me if you believe in Oklahoma or if you believe in Michigan as a team that's going to the college football playoff this year.

I mean, yeah. And we shall debate Alabama. I have wavered on them being a playoff team. They looked like it kind of on Saturday. And the big 12 is opening up. First this episode brought to you by friends at Omaha steaks. Protein seems to be everywhere these days in popcorn cereal coffee bars powders and snacks. It feels fast and precise. And with long lasting battery life, it feels like non-stop energy with a laptop that can keep up. Built for those who want better, the Dell XPS built for you. I talked about Texas, you know, Ohio state in various other things, Oregon Oklahoma state on the locked on college football live squad show.

Check out that episode here on the feed if you have not all ready. And right now I want to get to Alabama. Whoa. Well, Chris Gordy of Locked on SEC came on this very show last week and said. Kentucky is upsetting Alabama and I tell you what for 30 minutes of football, he looked like the smartest man alive. I thought, man, I don't know if they're ready for this is Kentucky. Can they really do it? And for a half, I thought, oh, maybe Kentucky is ready. Maybe Will Stein's putting this together. Then Alabama decided, no, we're done that we're done with that. We're done. We're done. We're done playing with our food. Yeah, Kentucky had the lead at the break 17 to 13. That's the thing that happened. If you just did the old box score scrolling, you wouldn't believe the Kentucky had the lead at the break. Alabama put it on them in the second half. They ran the ball better.

Daniel Hill had a hundred yards rushing alert the presses call all media outlets from Los Angeles to to Northeast Maine. And let the world know that Alabama against an SEC opponent. I know it's Kentucky, but when we're going to ignore that right now, Alabama had a 100 yard rush. Oh, my goodness. Oh, my goodness. I feel and Russell can still grow, but I tell you what the Alabama defense is starting to look a little bit more like the Alabama defense of old. And early in the season for Alabama, who has a very favorable schedule as far as SEC schedules go, but really for any schedule for that matter. They have an advantage. They do not play a big high profile game until Georgia on October 10th. Now, keep an eye on Mississippi state on the road. They blitzed blasted and just bludgeoned Minnesota over the weekend.

I, it was the only worst bet that I gave out that actually turned out to be a worst bet a winning week. Who would have thought, don't worry, the regression of the meat will come. I'm sure I thought Minnesota win that game. Minnesota solid program got some good players at home. They were seven and a last year. Mississippi state went up there with Camario Taylor and said, we don't care at all whatsoever. So that game for Alabama, there's certainly one to keep an eye on. But Kentucky East Carolina Florida State South Carolina, Mississippi state. Keelan Russell has shown you flashes glimpses moments where you go, whoa, this guy. That's why he was the number one quarterback. That's why Duncanville was so good. That's why he could be special. Then he's showing you moments where you go. Oh, yeah, that's right. He hasn't started a college football season before. Yeah. Yeah, that's, that's going to be challenging. Georgia, Tennessee, Texas A&M, LSU, maybe even Auburn.

We'll see. We'll see. They've got a big game against Florida this week. So I think you're an Alabama fan. This is absolutely a light win vibe because you found a way to win with the side of the ball that has struggled under Keelan the borers. Leadership, the defense and the run game. Both of them showed up. The run game can still be better, but the run game was better. Much, much better. You take out Keelan Russell's rushing stats. You're about 160 on the ground. Every time Alabama goes for 160 plus on the ground, they're going to score at least 30 points. They have too many weapons. Keelan Russell's two talented. Keelan, the board and Ryan Grubb are too good of offensive coaches. They're not used to having a run game like that. Now you're playing Kentucky, not a top tier team in the SCC. I get it. I understand. But it was something. It was a conference foe at the very least. Pidding over to a conference game that was played this weekend, speaking of great defensive performances. This one's not as surprising. BYU 28 Arizona 17.

Honestly, for Arizona fan mood assessment here. I honestly go no vibe. I expected them to lose the game. I expected it to be competitive. It was. It was. Yeah, they lost by 11. Game was closer than that. In the second half, though, BYU and their coaching staff pitched a shut out against no fofita. That's pretty darn impressive. Arizona wasn't able to crack 100 yards on the ground in this game because BYU's defense is exceptionally well coached, well-skinned. And what do you know? BYU ran the ball for more yards and Bearbock Meyer was good and efficient. This was a quintessential BYU win. And even though I expected them to, I am in the the light win vibe territory for BYU after this game. And let me tell you why. It's not necessarily because of the outcome. Anytime you win a conference game,

there's going to be a likely. The most likely minimum is, yeah, you're going to get a light win vibe from here. I consider to know vibe because this is kind of how I expected the game to play out. I thought Arizona would cover the seven and a half. It wasn't one of my worst bets of the week, which is actually I can change it back to best bets because we are back over 500 on the year. But. I'm looking around at the rest of the big 12. And I saw this tweet from Pete Nakedko saying BYU is emerging as a big 12 title contender. What do you mean emerging, Peter? Emerging from what second place where they were the runner up last year? I did a crossover show with Drake toll of locked on big 12 last week. And unfortunately did not appear on the feed. There was a technical mess happen there. But. I said going into last week, yeah, I'd still put Texas tech power rated number one and BYU number two.

I wouldn't do that right now through two games. BYU's been far more impressive. They played admittedly not a good FCS team. They dismantled them as any team should. And then they took a top tier. Contender in the big 12, a team that's trying to get to that next jump or make that next jump. And get to the big 12 championship game and just played another typical BYU game might I remind you in the last two years. Texas tech is the only program to beat BYU in the big 12. It's just tech. Nobody else has gotten there. There's a gym harboh era Michigan feel to BYU in the big 12. They're not always blowing everybody out. But they're just playing really good football. And once they get a lead, you feel really good that their defense is going to hold it and that their quarterback won't screw it up. Bear Bachmire looks better as a passer.

He needed to improve that. He still runs the ball. LJ Martin is still good. And I like what they have on defense. I mean. K. Dole Wavve. I wasn't even their leading tackleer. And I think he might be their best player on defense. He's certainly one of them. Oregon transfer. Why receiver Kyler Casper to touchdowns in this game. I'm just. I'm looking to BYU going. This feels a lot more open. I'm going to talk about Arizona state later on in the show. But Texas tech won on the road and struggled with Oregon state. Now. I could very easily look at that game and say, oh, man. Oregon state wasn't supposed to be good in the pack 12 this year. They're rebuilding under Jamarkas Shepherd. Do you think Houston or Texas tech who play on Friday, by the way, don't forget that. Do you think either one of those teams is a bad football team? I don't.

My top 25 have reflected that. I think most people that cover this board would say, yeah, I mean, Texas tech in Houston look good going into the year. So when Houston struggled with Oregon state and look, my top 25 still has to reflect what we know. But I'm just, I'm just keeping an eye on this right now. Texas tech and Houston both struggled with Oregon state, which means one of three things. plausible scenario number one. It's early in the year. Texas tech in Houston haven't found their footing yet. plausible scenario number two. College football is weird and fluky. plausible scenario number three. Texas tech in Houston are every bit as good as we think. And Oregon state is way better than we expected them to be. Have you watched Braden atkinson and his true freshman wide receiver connect? Because he's one of the leading wide receivers in all of college football.

Have you watched Braden atkinson play football? Maybe Oregon state is just good. Now, until they actually beat teams, we won't know that, but they started the pretty tough nonconference late going to Houston and hosting Texas tech. I'm just keeping an eye on that. Jamarka Shepherd. Probably the best Oh and two start in all of college football this year. So Texas tech feels human. Their schedule is still really favorable. Their toughest games are all at home. All three of them. That's the biggest break. But man BYU looks like they're just getting a little bit better. Every single year. And the team that I think is the most underrated in. As far as the betting markets go. It wasn't as bad as it seemed. First this episode brought to you by friends over at Fandall. You've waited all off season for this. So final score. Texas A&M. 48. Arizona State. 20. No major vibe. For either one of these teams. I thought Texas A&M would win. I thought Texas A&M would cover. This is a good competitive game. Until the fourth quarter began. Texas A&M. With Arizona State in possession. In the fourth quarter or late in the third. Had just a 24 to 20 lead. And that was because Arizona State ran it a little. With Tyson Brown.

And they threw it a lot from cutter Bowley to read Harris. More on that in a moment. Cutter Bowley. Once a starter in the SEC in Kentucky. Now at Arizona State. Is off to a really good start in his son devil's tenure. And coming into the year. Our friends at Fandall had Arizona State's win total at six and a half. And I said this is ridiculous. This should be at least seven and a half. Maybe even eight and a half. I'm going over here. I still feel great about this. Texas A&M. Was outgained by Arizona State. Turnovers were the story cutter Bowley through two hundred exceptions. In the fourth quarter. Yep. That was costly. Texas A&M had two hundred and fifty five yards of total offense in the game. Arizona State at 369. So 48 points looks like a bad showing from Brian Ward's defense. It really wasn't. At least not as bad as the final score.

Would make it indicate. This is this is a double no vibe. This is Arizona State. Saying okay. We see a lot of good things didn't get the outcome in the fourth quarter. We were looking for it. But. Nothing about the seasons lost. Nothing's a disaster. We're supposed to win the game. Texas A&M is saying. This is roughly how the game was supposed to look. Wasn't perfect. It's early in the year. ASU's quality team. And you end up getting a comfortable win end of the day. All right. All right. For Texas A&M. Marcel Reed did not look. He averaged six and a half yards in per attempt. 163 yards passing three touchdowns in a pick. Not very good. He missed a couple throws. He had a couple of competitive throws. Didn't love what I saw from Marcel Reed on Saturday. New offense coordinator. All right. It's given time. He's got weapons. Rubin Owens is still good. Mario Craver's still a good weapon on the outside. But. That's got to improve. No doubt about it.

The good news sometimes he can get carried by the defense. But anyway. On the other side for Arizona State. If you are a big 12 fan as I was talking about earlier. And you are trying to get an understanding of the big 12 landscape. And who can contend for a conference championship. Know that Arizona State is squarely in the mix. Because like I said, defense played better in the numbers indicate. And the big 12 collectively as a league. And everyone that is on Arizona State schedule is going to get so ridiculously tired. Of the cutter bully to read Harris connection. Texas A&M could not stop him. Could not stop Reed Harris. RPOs go routes fade routes didn't matter, man. Reed Harris, the Boston College transfer. One of many reasons I was excited about Arizona State coming into the year. Man, can that dude ball big body explosive nine for 189 and two touchdowns in college station.

Yeah, that connection is going to work. I like the game plan they had for Arizona State. A lot of quick hitting stuff to get cutter bully settled down. Then they opened it up once Texas A&M sucked in. It was a good plan. You know what? Cutter bully made a couple of mistakes. You know why? He's actually not that experienced of a quarterback at this point in time. And Texas A&M is good and they were at home. That's the way the cookie crumbles. You play this game in tempi and you play the first three quarters the same way. The fourth quarter is not 24 to nothing in favor of Texas A&M. I'm very confident in that. So this is about how I hire scoring that I thought for sure. Cutter bully to read Harris. Just remember that combination. Also, apparently you need to know the name Kingston Lopa, a guy that came from Oregon with toch the poida cow. And he put on his best Heisman level defensive performance at Syracuse to bring my beloved California golden bears to one and one. Am I disappointed in myself that I didn't put cow in my best bets last week?

Yes. I am indeed because I was hesitating after things were not quite firing on all cylinders in a week one like I thought they might. But to go on the road and be to Syracuse team that I do not think is bad. Fran Brown knows how to coach Steve Angel is pretty good quarterback. Their schedule is really hard, but look I flipped the games. This is where I thought cow would be I have them going nine and three this year. I'm not wavering off of that if toch the boy gets his defense going. And Kingston Lopa keeps playing like that as a defensive superstar. He had a pick six and two other interceptions in the game. There was not a better individual defensive performance in all of college football over the weekend.
