MGM+ Reveals Jon Hamm-Led True-Crime Thriller Series 'American Hostage'

MGM+ is launching a high-stakes psychological thriller titled American Hostage, an anthology series starring and executive-produced by Jon Hamm. Premiering in September 2026, the eight-episode debut season dramatizes a bizarre 1977 hostage crisis in Indianapolis where a disgruntled man held a mortgage executive at gunpoint. The narrative centers on Fred Heckman, a radio journalist who becomes an involuntary negotiator when the captor demands a live broadcast to air his grievances. Based on a successful scripted podcast, the show explores the heavy ethical burdens placed on media figures during real-time emergencies. Showrunners Shawn Ryan and Eileen Myers aim to examine the intersection of journalistic integrity, public spectacle, and modern-day social resentment. This project distinguishes itself from other adaptations by prioritizing the reporter's perspective and the moral dilemmas inherent in live media coverage.
