About this episode

Les Wexner looms extraordinarily large over the Jeffrey Epstein story because his relationship with Epstein appears to have been one of the most consequential relationships in Epstein’s transformation from a little-known financial operator into a man with enormous wealth, property and access to elite society. Wexner, the billionaire behind The Limited and Victoria’s Secret, met Epstein in the 1980s and eventually gave him extraordinary authority over his personal finances, including power of attorney and broad discretion to act on his behalf; Epstein also became a trustee of the Wexner Foundation. The association supplied Epstein with something arguably as valuable as money: credibility. He could present himself to bankers, businessmen and wealthy prospective contacts as the trusted financial adviser to one of America’s richest men, while his name began appearing in connection with Wexner businesses and charitable entities. Epstein also eventually acquired control of Wexner’s enormous Manhattan townhouse at 9 East 71st Street, the residence that later became one of the central locations associated with Epstein’s abuse. More recent reporting examining Epstein’s finances concluded that Wexner was the most important contributor to the dramatic expansion of Epstein’s fortune and that Epstein’s affiliation with him opened doors that otherwise might never have opened. That makes Wexner indispensable to understanding not simply whom Epstein knew, but how Epstein obtained the money, legitimacy, real estate and social standing that helped him construct the world in which he operated.

Wexner has maintained that he knew nothing about Epstein’s sexual crimes and has said he severed ties with him in 2007 after discovering that Epstein had misappropriated “vast sums” from him and his family. Wexner said money Epstein later transferred into a charitable fund represented the return of money that had originally belonged to the Wexner family; an independent review commissioned by the Wexner Foundation found that Epstein-controlled entities transferred approximately $46 million to the YLK Charitable Fund and found no evidence that Epstein used his Foundation ties to commit sexual assaults or other crimes. But even accepting Wexner’s account, enormous questions remain about how Epstein accumulated such extraordinary authority, why warning signs from people around Wexner apparently failed to break the relationship earlier, and how Epstein was able to leverage that connection for so long. Epstein’s association with Wexner overlapped with his rise from relative obscurity into ownership of extraordinary properties, control of vast sums of money and entrée into circles populated by billionaires, academics and political figures. Wexner therefore remains one of the central figures in any serious examination of Epstein’s ascent because the relationship sits directly at the intersection of the two biggest unanswered questions surrounding Epstein: where his fortune really came from and how he obtained the credibility that allowed him to move so effortlessly among the powerful.
