About this episode

“Guaranteed Human I survived nine months in captivity and I've spent my life exploring how other people survive what should have destroyed them. I'm Elizabeth Smart and these are the survivor files.”From the transcript

Matt Leinart grew up without travel ball, year-round showcases, or a coach telling an eight-year-old to pick one sport, and now he has two boys in the middle of all of it. The Big Noon Kickoff analyst joins Steve Covino and Rich Davis on Overpromised on behalf of DraftKings Gameday with a blunt message for parents: if a coach tells your kid he can only play one thing, get away from that coach, because the cream rises to the top eventually no matter what sport a kid lands on. It turns into a full throwback episode from there. Leinart gets into the 6U All-Star grind, how the Throwbacks podcast with Jerry Ferrara came together over one long phone call, the one social media trend his wife still cannot get him to do, and the theory that you cannot really know who you are dating until you have watched them survive a football season.

Then Covino and Rich open the 80s and 90s vault for a crush draft that runs from Alyssa Milano and Mona to Samantha Fox, Kim Fields, Miss Elizabeth, Elisabeth Shue and the number one answer on the board, before closing on Carrie Underwood's 14th year of Sunday Night Football and the first NFL bet of the season.

Overpromised is the weekly uncensored bonus pod from the Covino and Rich Show, weekdays 5-7 PM ET on Fox Sports Radio.

Hey, he's Kovino and Rich Overprom is Fox Sports Radio, Steve Kovino and Rich Davis. And we got a guest from Big Noon Kickoff and Throwbacks with Jerry Farara.

He's a football tycoon. Let's welcome Matt Liner to the show. What's up, Matt? Happy to be on, man. I was going to say you got all this stuff going on. How do you have time to be sports dad because I did bump into you this past summer and six you all stars and there you are being sports dad. You're right. We did. Yeah, I mean, as you know, it's the best gift in the world. Like my boy just started making the all stars, which is pretty awesome. I got a five year old in the pipeline who's pretty good too. So I think next summer I'm going to be spread real thin, but it's what it's all about, man. I'm just just just watching them coaching them play sports. My daughter is going to be two in February. So I'm doing the whole girl dad. I don't even know the girl sport thing. I'm going to be doing that in a couple of years, but it's all good, man. There's nothing better. I noticed his team dad matching cleats and everything like that. Like South Bay was legit. You guys did pretty well. You feel neat? I was the heat man. Yeah. I want to say shout out to Alison Quinn, our team mom.

She's, I said she's great. She's all in. We're going to get matching cleats. We're going to do all this, but you know what? Especially at this age, it makes it fun, dude. The boys were so excited and it was a great year, man. We made it to the World Series. I mean, six U World Series competed really well all summer. It was a blast. So. Matt Liner with Kavino and Rich Overprom is super involved. Parent, right. Kids are crazy. You got college football coming up. You got the podcast with Sherry Farrah. How does that friendship begin? And do you get this counts of fat sounds? I want to know because he's co-owner there at the sandwich shop. How does that relationship even start? Man, we, the short story is I was, I was kind of dabbling into getting into the podcast space. Never did it before. Kind of, kind of was talking to people. It's like, I, you know, like, I just, it would make sense to do it with someone like, like a host, right? Like, someone that makes sense to do it with. And at the same time, Jerry was kind of looking for a co-host as well.

And then we were like, man, like, you know, like our agents and everybody was talking. It was like, we grew up in L.A. At the same time, Entourage and USC. We were literally, I mean, he's a year old with me. We're literally the same time in kind of prime Hollywood sports L.A. I was actually closer with, with Connelly and some of the other guys. I never really ran into Jerry in L.A. But we have kids of same age. Like, like, our lives just like, there's so many parallels that led us to like this time in our life. And so we, we always joke, we like speed dated on the phone. And we talked for like two hours. Like, like, we were high school buddies, like, just getting in. No, it was so. Did you fall see together on the phone? Like, your high school house we did. We did. We did. We did. We did. We come to the first time we met. But, uh, no. But it just, it was natural. And I'm like, we're like, oh, shit, this is going to work, you know? And the throwbacks theme kind of thing. It's just like nostalgia telling stories and telling stories and, um, it's just been a lot of fun. We're launched in season three, uh, coming up here in a couple of weeks.

So far enough about that as well. Well, congrats. And it is working because I just saw a viral clip recently this week about your love of saved by the bell. Uh, you guys were talking about that and Kelly Kepowski and how your mission is to get Tiffany Amber Thieson on your show. Well, first off, consider us. Your team moves that can slay her here on the show. Hope you enjoy that. Uh, tell us about that. Saved by the bell. That was your favorite show. Is there any update on getting Kelly Kepowski yet? I don't know how I don't know if I'm older than you guys or were the same age, but I mean, to me, it's the greatest television show of all time. Yeah. Um, Kelly Kepowski was number one in my heart. So it's so funny. I'll tell a quick story. I literally, I told my wife this like, we, you know, we want to get her on the pod. I think I don't think it's going to happen, unfortunately. But like, I just messaged her. I was like, she had no idea who I was. Um, she never responded. We actually have a, uh, an agent in common. So I was like, oh, maybe we can go. But, uh, you're baseball connection. She's a, she's a baseball mom and then Cino Little League. Yeah.

I've seen her at the games. And by the way, we've had her on our show. So you got to just try a little harder. Yeah. You got to do on. Listen, I am trying and I am striking out. Um, I mean, I, we posted those clips. I was like, I'm all in. My wife was like, you were desperate. Stop doing this. That looks terrible. She doesn't want to talk to you guys. And then I was thinking like, maybe Jerry knows her and the actor. Yeah. And Jerry does, I don't know. We'll see. Hopefully one day she'll just pop in and, you know, I don't even know what I would say to be honest with you. But it's okay. That's funny. You know, Matt Liner with Kevin on Rich speaking of, you know, the nostalgia throwbacks. We had Daniel Fishel on the other day. I coach her kid, her little son, Adler. Another heart. And I was, yeah, I saw that she was a little but her with you for not putting her on the list of like, you know, team crushes. You know, she, she's on, she was on the list, right? And I told her that I said, hey, listen, Topanga is like top, you know, whatever. She's topping a lot of cast list. It just, you know, and, and, and I told her that I said, listen, we've talked about she

quite a bit on our podcast, which we need to get her on the podcast. But now Danielle is killing him, man. She got all, I got, I don't even, she's got a hundred things going on with all the iPods and dancing with the stars and all the stuff she's doing. And yeah, it was cool to do the show because we did, we talk you sports. We talk being parents and stuff too. So, but yeah, she's, she's a legend as well. It was sort of an evolution, depending on where you were. For me, it was a listen, Milano, right? So, yeah, then Kelly Kepalski, then Winnie Cooper, maybe Cooper, maybe Cooper. Yeah. And Cooper OG, Winnie Cooper for sure. Right. Topanga, Jennifer Love Hewitt was brought up on your podcast. Right. That was one of Jerry's. So it just depends. I wish you luck there. You got to get her on, dude. Got to get her on. Now, man, I find you and your wife on social media super endearing. Is she the one that gets you to do all the fun trends or are you the one? How does that work? Do you come home and she's like, babe, we got something we got to do. How does that go down? I mean, kind of. We're just, you know, like we love, we love doing it. It's been fun for us to do together, separate. We play into the whole marriage.

And I think it's really just trying to be relatable and having fun and being authentic. She's really, I mean, she's, she's an actress, you know, by nature. She was an actress forever. She was in arts, music, dance, like theater, all that stuff. So she's really, she's really creative. She's really funny. She's really witty. She is all the things that I am not. I feel like, you know, I have self deprecation. I can make, you know, I have, I have some of this stuff. So I think it plays well together. But it's just a combination of kind of seeing what's out there, what's what's fun and relatable and, and then just the engagement. Like I just, I love the engagement and, you know, I love doing the dad stuff. I think that's always fun too. Yeah, but Matt, you know what you are? You're vulnerable, man. Guys like me, I'm not good at it. I'm so reluctant to put myself out there like there like that, but you're inspiring in that way. So, you know, props to you. And is there something you won't do though? Is there one thing you're like, now, you know what? I'm not like, I can't do that. I won't dance. I refuse to dance. That's the, I'm with you. I will not, I will not do a dance trend.

I, I'm sure I have, but I will not. I refuse to do a dance trend and I refuse to put the phone down like a selfie and do all the dance. I just won't do it. Um, we, we both really don't do that, but she's tried to make me do a couple of these dance things over the years. I'm like, dude, I'm like six, five with no rhythm. And it's like, I do draw the line at some point on social media. And that's one of them. The kids might make them or might get them to do it too though. Who knows? Matt, we want to run a theory by you. It's our, it's our football dating theory. Throw the, the single guys out there and single women. I think you have to date someone one full calendar year before you know how they are. Because with football season, like a week away, they feel like so many people's habits changed drastically, like what they're involved in Saturday, Sunday. Like you could really not get a glimpse of someone until football season. Well, you could tell a lot about a girl or a guy on Saturdays of how they, how they root for their team or where they go to watch TV, watch games. You can tell a lot by them on Sunday.

Like if you're, if you're at the house chilling at Sunday and you want to be on the couch all day and you got a girl who's like, what the hell is going on? We're going to home good. You're not going home good. We're not, we're not going to best find home good home deep. I did. You know, we are going to watch the game. We're going to eat, have some drinks and relax. Yeah, I think that, I think that's a good theory. You know, falls and also like who gets married in the fall? Like you know, like there's just a lot of things that happen in the fall that should strictly just be like, hey, this is our time. This is our, this is fantasy football time. This is college football. This is NFL football. The NBA starts in a couple months. Like it's the greatest time of the year. We don't need to be doing all these other events, you know? When I was 14 years old, I was kidnapped and health captive for nine months. I survived and I've spent my life exploring how other people survive what should have destroyed them. I'm Elizabeth Smart and these are the survivor files. I just remember this low taunting voice next to my ear saying, shut up, don't say anything.

Every week I'm with survivors who lived through the unthinkable. I knew if he woke up without a doubt, he was going to hurt me. I started feeling that there was someone at the end of my bed and I just started screaming that they are abducted, stalked, controlled and nearly silenced. But these aren't stories about what's taken from them. Their story is about what it takes to make it out alive. Listen to the survivor files with Elizabeth Smart on the iHeartRadio app Apple Podcasts or wherever you get your podcasts. On the new podcast, Solita, we share the messy reality of traveling alone as a woman. I can wait four hours for the next bus or this random dude is offering me a ride on his motorcycle. I choose option B. I'm Julie Bignero and I travel by myself because it's a rare space where I can say yes without asking anyone else first. I'm on a mission to reclaim the word Solita, trading the pity for possibility.

Every time I tried to be alone, I kept meeting people and they were like, you smile good as not a lot of people smile around here. But when you're alone, that you're most receptive to the world as it is and not the lies you're sold about it, it can be a time where you push your limits, change your mind or wake up to a new version of yourself. So whether you're a solo travel veteran or you're too nervous to book your first trip, I hope you listen to Solita on the iHeartRadio app Apple Podcasts or wherever you get your podcasts. That call was really pivotal for me. Hey, it's Emily Tish Sussman and this season on She Pivots, the podcast where women share bold career moves and personal turning points that changed everything. I sit down with culture shifting women who share their pivots like Para Olympian Alley Truett. I was like, I'm on out from a shark attack. There's no way in 11 months I'm making the very long text. Advocate Elizabeth Smart. I still feel that drive that I can still make a difference so I'm going to keep going. Celebrity Chef Carla Hall was that scary to walk away from such a stable career at

Africa's two years. No, I was more afraid of being unhappy than I was broke in a dead and job that I didn't enjoy. And feminist legend, Gloria Steinem. All of us were trying to express women's real lives. We need a meeting place of our own and if I can contribute to that, I'd like to maintain that and leave this house for that purpose. Listen to She Pivots on the iHeartRadio app Apple Podcasts or wherever you get your podcasts. Hey, it's Bobby Bones. Join me and former NFL quarterback Matt Castle every Wednesday on our podcast, lots to say with me, Bobby Bones and Matt Castle. We also bring in friends and mostly match friends who are current or former NFL players, some of the biggest names in music and entertainment and then we have some really great conversations that can pretty much go anywhere. The great. Taikman Jones. After the game, the whole national task force for police officers was at the stadium. Hey, buddy. Yeah. You out of. And one of my favorite segments we do is called situational awareness where Bobby and I

give each other real life situations and figure out what we'd actually do. You're in training camp and the rookie quarterback has one good throwing session in front of the media. Suddenly everybody online says he should start over you week one. How do you handle this? You just go back out to practice the next day and we firm the mess up. Listen to lots to say with Bobby Bones and Matt Castle on the iHeartRadio app Apple Podcasts or wherever you get your podcasts. The NFL never stops and neither does its newest podcast. And by the way speaking of fall, I say you're talking to Greg Olson and I'm so on board being a coach myself. Having kids play different sports. I feel like the whole like specialization. Like your kids and my kids around the same age, like you can't be doing one sport, right? I mean, yeah, I mean, it's a different. It's a different era for sure. I always, I mean, I encourage my boys, but I always, parents ask me, I'm just like play as many as you can as much as possible. I do think it starts earlier, the specialization, the competitiveness does start in early age and at least when I was growing up. I also just didn't have access to all the stuff that these kids do. But if you run into a coach who tells you you can't do this for that, get the hell away

from them, man. Go play as many. I make you a better athlete at the end of the day. And just a true believer in like the cream always rises to the top at some point. If you got enough talent and work ethic, like you're gonna, you're gonna be fine, right? No matter what sport that is, that being said, there is a balance of like you do have to compete. You do have to do all the other little things too because you don't want to get left behind. But anyway, yeah, boys, I gotta go. I'm getting pulled in a different direction, but I appreciate you guys having me on. Thank you. Absolutely with Draft King's game day fuel. Thank you. Matt Liner, good to see you, man. Matt Liner. Good dude. Catch him on a big noon kickoff with our boy, Brady Quinn, who works here at Fox Sports Radio to pros and a cup of Joe and Dave Portinoi. Now is anyone on that list of teenage crushes we forgot like your childhood crushes? I mean, there was an evolution, right? But we all had our personal ones too. I mentioned Alyssa Milano was one of my personal ones, but yeah, I mean, first.

Samantha Lusimilano, who we've had on the show a bunch of times still beautiful. You know, they modeled Ariel after her, the little mermaid. But yeah, shout out to Mona too while we're at it. Hey, Angela Mona. Look at it now. Mona, was it that old? Oh, yeah, dude, it was about the sexy redheads back in the day, although sexy horned up redheads on the 80s TV. Peg Bundy, Mrs. Roper. Yeah, Mona. Oh, but yeah, let's go. I mean, Milano, even earlier than that, one of my first Ebony crushes, childhood crushes, Toody, Kim Fields, Faxalife, bro. You take the good, you take the bad. And she still looks good. So yeah, it was like Kim Fields. I showed a debut this week back in 1979, Faxalife. Really? You were more of a Natalie kind of guy, right? No, you're more of a Joe kind of guy. Which was more of a Joe. Stop. And then like I said, the evolution goes on personally. I remember having like, fifth and sixth grade slow roasters looking at posters at the Jersey Shore of Samantha Fox wanting to do something. I wasn't sure what I wanted to do, but she was always like pictured with like,

when he shirts and tank tops and I'm feeling me. Samantha Fox. So yeah, she was a fox. And she had that song touch me. He used to, yeah, he used to make my imagination run wild. And then my first Noody magazine, I hold near and dear to my heart, Sally Scudts. You've always brought her up. This is absurd. Circus boobs. Yeah. I was 15 and 92, I believe you didn't buy it. You gave some hobo money to go buy it. Oh, we took a trip into the city. Yeah, I believe in on my friend Tom, my friend Tom boy. Yeah, it was Tom. But, uh, yeah, I ended up with it. But no, for real, my number one no was Alyssa Molana. Do you like Sally Scudts? I mean, it's near and dear, but as I got older, older and developed a taste by far, Carmen Electra. If I was at Spencer Gifts, and I was looking through the posters, Barbie twins, Jenny MacArthur, P. M Anderson, Kathy Ion, Carmen Electra was, ooh, when I first met, when I first met Cavino, I had that picture on my desk. Yeah, he had that picture on his desk as if they were dating.

Yeah, what are you wearing? What are you wearing? What are you wearing, bro, in my mind. In my mind. How about you? Again, those are personal favorites. I'd say as far as like teenage crushes Alyssa Molano, I think Carmen Electra has like had older. I'm going to go in reverse. I was a big wrestling fan. So oh, oh, Cogan. I love his long blonde hair. You look like a 24 inch python. No, uh, Mr. Elizabeth, ooh yeah. A Mr. Elizabeth was hot. She was 80s hot. She was hot. I remember being like, man, she's a woman, huh? Rest in peace, Mr. Elizabeth. I watched the adventures in babysitting, and I remember thinking I want Elizabeth Shoe to babysit me. She was the, and between that and back to the future, she was like attainable, girl, extra hot. I'm not taking it. I'm not taking it. You're right. So, um, I very much like the Elizabeth Shoe, and my number one answer on the board. And it developed by type. This is clearly my type. The Cole Egger on Charles and Charge to me was like, that was like dream girl to me.

Hey Charles. Buddy with barrels. Charles. They could go back to Sid's Pizza. I'm hanging out at the Powell's house with the Cole Egger. She was to me by far like the hottest teen actress when I was a little kid. I had a crush big time and props again to Jennifer Love. You all those girls that are come up. Don't forget her Baywatch days too. Oh, I don't. I do not. Oh, my. Well, hey, if you want to add to the list at Kovino and Rich, like teenage crushes, yeah, would you be Kirk Cameron? Yeah. I will always remember the episode of him trying to seal up the water bed on Groan's bed. But you know what? I say that jokingly, he was on every cover of Tiger Beaton teen beat. Like that dude really was saying it. You know who my wife likes tigers? Yeah, that's why I love tigers. My wife always talks about some dude that was in Casper, the friendly ghost. Oh, Devon Sawa. Yeah, I was like, I was a little too old. I'm like, who is like every girl loved him. So hey, again, add to the list.

Now we are less than a week from kickoff to NFL season. I thought you would find this interesting. Okay. 14 years now. 14 years Kerry Underwood has been doing the Sunday night football theme, the number one watch show in America. That is in oiling up those legs for 14 years. She's putting some armor all. What is like a million dollars a week or something? It's a million per game and Kerry Underwood. This is the 14th season. He's partnered up with NBC. If you remember before that, it was Faith Hill and there was one year where it was pink. But 14 years now and get this to celebrate 14 years. You know the song, wait no day for Sunday night. Sort of a revamp of Joan Jets. What is it? I hate myself all loving you. They are altering it for the first time in a while. Apparently because of Kerry Underwood's love of rock music, they're making it a more rock inversion. I know you said her daughter.

She performed with Papa Roach this year. She did that duet and she toured and did some appearances with Guns and Roach. So Kerry Underwood taking a more rock approach and you will see that now it's on Thursday. But since it's NBC, they call the Thursday night game Sunday night football. So you'll see Kerry Underwood next week actually on Wednesday for that game. I'm so all confused. It's still NBC Sunday night football on Wednesday. And of course, you got a Super Bowl rematch and I want to give my first pick of the year. I want to start out strong. Want to know, you ready for this? You know that I don't give a shit about your love of Hard Knocks and Sam Darnold and Esch Jackson Spith and Jigma. I don't care. Episode five this week of Hard Knocks was great. It was great. It's heartfelt. Yeah. And I told you, I don't want to watch as a Niners fan. I don't want to watch a show that's going to make me like them. They're really likeable. Yeah, just on the team. So you can see where I'm as a Niners fan skipping. Okay. I don't want to see it.

So here's my first bet of the 2026 NFL season on our promise spot thrown up there. It's the spin rate. My ass. You're downwind and Darnold spin rate, bro. Well, I love the Patriots plus three and a half. So even if it's a close game and the see how to win by field goal, hey, half a point, I'll take it. Let's go. All right, less than a week away. Thank you. And if you like our show, remember Monday through Friday on Fox Sports Radio 2-4 out here on the West Side 5-7 on the East, everything at Covino and Rich. Thanks again to Matt Liner. Hit him up. And thank you. Hey, enjoy week one of the NFL before we see you. Until next time, Arriba D'Archi, baby. I see you in the overpromise lay. Sorry, I'm thrown off. Tuti, huh? Tuti, yeah. On the roller skates. I survived nine months in captivity.
