A 21-year-old man named Dennis Okimo just started trial in Edmonton on 14 charges, including manslaughter for the deaths of two police officers. Back on March 16, 2023, 16-year-old Roman Schuchuk shot and killed Constable's Travis Jordan and Brett Ryan outside his. Family's apartment then turned the gun on himself. Prosecutors say Okimo sold Schuchuk the rifle used in the attack for $2,500. Okimo pleaded guilty early in the trial to selling cocaine and marijuana to Schuchuk in the months before the shooting, but he says not guilty to. The manslaughter and other counts, like criminal negligence for wounds, to Schuchuk's mom and a pizza hut worker. The gun was a .22 caliber replica of a World War II rifle, now banned by the feds as an assault-style weapon. Schuchuk struggled hard with mental health, facing repeated crises like psychoses with demons and aliens, and got diagnosed with schizophrenia.
He was in and out of hospital, but would relapse off meds and back on weed. Days before killing the officers, he randomly shot a pizza hut clerk, leaving the guy with blindness, memory loss, and serious brain damage. Crown prosecutor Adam Garrett told the judge any reasonable person would have seen the danger in handing a gun to an unlicensed teen like that, but Okimo took the cash anyway. If convicted, he'd be one of the rare few in Canada, nail for homicide, just from selling a firearm. The judge only trial has 10 days slotted, so we'll hear more as it unfolds on this heartbreaking case. That's the story for today. Canada News Today, Driven by AI. I'm Corey with The Story.
