About this episode
Leicestershire Police grapple with a surge in serious road offences, dubbed the Fatal Four. In 2025, nearly 70,000 drivers received notices, with over 29,000 for speeding, 11,600 for average speed cameras, and 6,720 for red light running. Drug driving cases nearly matched drink driving arrests. Despite improved speeding compliance, deaths and serious injuries persist. Police are investing in new tech, including AI for seatbelt and phone offence detection, to combat issues like spontaneous car cruising meets and illegal e-scooters.

Hey, it's Corey with Lester News today, your city, your news every day. Lester Shire Police are alarmed by a disturbingly high number of drivers committing serious road offenses. They highlighted the fatal 4, drink or drug driving, speeding, not wearing seat belts and using mobile phones. In 2025, nearly 70,000 drivers got notices of intended prosecution, with over 29,000 static speed cameras, about 11,600 from average speed cameras, and 6,720 for running red lights, nearly 40,000 chose education courses instead of court. Drug driving has become a major problem, with arrests nearly matching the 100 monthly drink driving cases. Speeding and seat belt offenses remain big issues, and mobile phone use is just the start of distraction problems. Police caught 439 drivers on phones, but say more enforcement is needed. After a recent county council meeting, officers shared these concerns and stressed the challenges.
Despite better compliance on speeding, deaths and serious injuries aren't dropping. They noted it's tough to police spontaneous car cruising meets, where drivers scatter quickly. Police are also targeting illegal e-scooters, seizing and destroying 500 to 600 this year. Modified e-bikes hitting 30 to 40 miles per hour are drawn complaints too. To fight back, they bought new devices for retrospective car cruising enforcement. Looking ahead, officials want to use AI to detect seat belt and phone offenses automatically. They say sticking to old methods won't cut it, so new tech could make a real difference on the roads. This story is shared with support from our sponsor.
