Keith Emerson's Hidden Life: Jazz, Family, and Joy

0:00On April 21st, Keith Emerson, the Prague Rock Wizard, who owned the Hammond organ like nobody else, passed away back in 2016. To fans, he was a total showman with ELP, but his partner, Mari Kabaguchi, son Aaron, and daughter-in-law Joe, painted a different picture of the quiet. Humble Guy Offstage Mari first crossed pass with Keith in 2006 at a tiny club in New Haven. She had no clue who he was, just showed up late for the second set and pushed to the front. After the gig, they hit it off quick. Also walked her to her car, and soon she was flying to England to meet his family. Deep down, Keith's heart beat for jazz and classical music, not just Prague. He'd nail obscure tunes on Spotify down to the label in the year, but he always called himself a fraud. Moments like jazz legends tearing up to meet him, or orchestras playing his stuff, hit him hardest, easing that insecurity. Later years brought focal dystonia, messing with his right hand, making ELP reunions nerve-wracking.

1:00He'd meditated alone before shows, but relaxed jams and dive bars freed up his fingers. Family recalls piano lessons be a face time, wild karaoke stunts, and non-stop laughs every day. His spirit lives on through grandson Ethan, hooked on music just like grandpa. Keith never took himself too seriously, turning even ordinary days into pure joy right up to the end.
