Texas Longhorns’ sloppy penalties nearly overshadow defensive dominance—can Steve Sarkisian clean things up before the Red River Rivalry? Brad Kellner and Madison Davis break down Texas’ latest win over Tennessee, spotlighting Collin Simmons’ costly celebration, Arch Manning’s growing pains, and why special teams remain a glaring issue. Despite the Longhorns’ 4-0 record, persistent mistakes on offense and special teams threaten to derail this championship-caliber squad.

The conversation heats up as the hosts debate Lance Jackson’s breakout performance, the secondary’s physicality, and Will Muschamp’s immediate impact on a revamped Texas defense. Looking ahead, can the running game and young playmakers like Jermaine Bishop Jr. provide a much-needed spark against Oklahoma? With the Sooners looming, the pressure is on for Texas to sharpen its discipline and capitalize on its national title potential.

So, if you're tying the knot, closing on a house, or welcoming a little one, you'll be ready for whatever life tosses your way. It's the right time to feel less stressed and more certain. That's a better way to money. Let's get started at nm.com. The Northwestern Mutual Life Insurance Company Milwaukee, Wisconsin. This is the Superstition. Even a marching bandwinkup call at 555 and 55 seconds.

Hit it! When you need a team that will do whatever it takes on game day, it matters where you stay. Hilton, for this day. Through two games, Texas was one of the least penalized teams in America. But these last two games, a different story. Can the Longhorns clean things up? We'll dive in with a very special guest coming up on Lockdown Longhorns. Intro. Welcome in, you're locked on to the Texas Longhorns. I'm your host B.K. Brad Kellner joined by a very special guest, one of the newest members of the Lockdown team, a new member of the Lockdown Longhorns team. Got to check out Longhorns hit if you haven't yet. If you're looking for more short form content about your favorite team, I talk too much.

I don't talk as much as I do. I need to show it up. I get to the point a lot better than I do. Madison Davis joining me today. Madison, welcome to the team. It's great to have you on board. How are you? I'm doing good, B.K. I'm doing good. I can't complain. Yes, as he says, the Longhorns hit podcast host man. When it comes to happen with the tap in, lock in with Longhorns hate podcasts. I love it. YouTube podcast, social media, wherever you get this show, you can find Longhorns hit. And again, short form, quick content to the point talking about your favorite Texas Longhorns teams. But of course, we're doing a longer form episode today, Madison. You and I were talking before the show. I know you wanted to talk about the penalties, right? It's been a problem. I undersark the last few years. In the first two games of this season, only four penalties against Texas State, only two in the comeback over Ohio State. And it's like, all right, they've turned a corner. Here we go. And then it was eight penalties against UTSA. And if you thought that was bad, how about 11 for 115 yards and against Tennessee?

So the floor is yours, my man. Your thoughts on the penalties and you have any confidence that Steve Sarkiesian can get those things turned around. Okay. So the 11 penalties for 115 yards, they were mind boggling to me. Always came at the worst point. But you know, obviously the one that's trending right now is the one with Collins Simmons and his celebration. That's tough. It's tough. It's tough. But I mean, as far as the offense goes, the two penalties that really come to my recollection as right now, archmaning, running past the line of scurmage, throwing it back. That puts us in a bind. It puts us in a bind. Third and long, second and long. And then that gets him rattled, you know, his clock speeds up. And that is kind of a recipe for turnovers. So I don't like it. I don't like it. But I do believe this by week has this, this by week gives me optimism. Yeah. I clean it up and get us ready for the red river rip. You know, it's funny. Like when the schedule came out, I was a little disappointed that the by week was as early

as it was. Yeah. It's doing super-prepared for OU. It's fun. It's a huge game. I'm going to get ready for that, although they don't look very good right now. Right. But like when the schedule came out, I'm like, man, I wish it was a little later. I'm kind of glad it's right now because you've got some guys that are banged up, but more importantly, you've got some things that need turned around. And Steve Sarkeesian, all off season long Madison, was emphasizing the penalties. And for two weeks again, it worked. It worked. I don't know if he stopped emphasizing it practice or whatever, but they just, again, I wish it was just a one year thing. Last year, they were one of the most penalized teams in the country. Really, the last three years, it's been a problem. So it's kind of everybody, right? On sports, the quarterback doesn't know where he is on the field. Special teams is doing it. But you know, the defense, I don't want to justify what Colin Simmons did. That was ridiculous. We all know. Right. Get away with penalties the way they're shutting people down, right? Yeah. Like overcome mistakes like that because they find a way to keep people out of the end zone and it's great. But to your point, like the offense, they're not doing enough right right now to overcome

a whole to fall started, lost of down penalty. That's the stuff that really worries you, I think. Yes, it worries me a lot. I mean, offense, like you said, it's not really producing as I would like to see it. And then when you set yourself behind the chains, that's not good, man. It's just, it's just not good for struggling offense. Yeah. You know, the funny part is like the offensive line last year was the biggest culprit, right? This year, the offensive line has not been bad from a penalty stage. Yeah, man. Yeah, it's just everybody else has been the problem. So, you know, Steve Sarkiesian on Monday and his press conference was like, we kind of took turns on first down screwing up and he's right. Oh, yeah. The quarterback sometimes it was the high snap. It was just the running backs going the wrong direction. It was a little bit of everything. And the good news is obviously Texas won the football game. That's right. And they're four and a half. They're the number one team in the country, right? They're the champion problems right now for the long horns. But you know, Matt, it's not, I'm sure you and I feel the same way like this is a national championship caliber roster. And you would eight for Texas to be its own worst.

That game should have been a blowout on Texas is better than Tennessee. Yes. And eight for self inflicted wounds to God forbid, keep you out of the playoff, but also keep you from, you know, winning a conference or a national championship, right? That's true. That's very true. I one thing that I truly disdain is undisciplined football and penalties can really be a major factor of undisciplined football. And those type of teams, they don't win national championships. That's definitely something I don't want to see in this back half of the schedule. Yeah. In Indiana last year, who of course wanted all, they were the second least penalized team in the country. I think they were the least until the title game had a decent amount against Miami. Funny enough, one of the closest games that they played, obviously they won. It makes a difference. So, you know, if you're Steve Sarkit, what are you trying? What are you doing? What do you think the problem is? Is it maybe there's not enough accountability for the players? Is it the coaches just aren't saying the right things? Like what? Outside of, hey, just commit fewer penalties. What would you like to see Texas change from a disciplined standpoint?

Um, I hate to sound like an old ball coach right here, but hey, we need to just, hey, character guys, let's after we make the play go back to the huddle. It doesn't even matter. I don't even care for celebrities anymore. Offensively take care of the football. We, I, Brian, I'm not going to lie. I'm running out of answers here. Yeah. I'm running out of answers here. Yeah. Well, outside of penalties, Madison, because that's again, one of a number of issues that Texas is dealing with on that side of the football. What, what else has you the most concerned? Is it, maybe you're not concerned, but would it be archmaning? Would it be the running backs? Would it be, I thought the offensive line played really well for three weeks, but against Tennessee? I thought there were some things that got exposed. Is it like what, what has you, maybe most concerned about this offense through the first month of the season? Special teams. Oh, not even the offense. We're going to the third phase. I, I'm just going by passing the off. Yeah. Special teams. I, I did not like that part return. I, I didn't, I didn't like when the Tennessee volunteers had a touchdown off of our

puns. I didn't like it. I didn't like it. And it was supposed to be a quarter note coach, starkeesian. He said it was supposed to be a directional point and went down the middle of the field. More guys were on this side. The guy went to the opposite side touchdown. Yeah. I'm not with that on sidekick. I don't, I, I, I, BK, I'm trying, I don't want to, you know, I don't want to, I'm going to be, I didn't, I don't know why Ryan Wingo. Yeah. I said it. Believe me. You're like, we're not alone, you know, it's again, the SEC's got to know the rules, like Tennessee. Yeah. Which, that shouldn't have ever happened. But it shouldn't have. Yeah. Ryan Wingo, the guy who's had hands issues for his whole Texas career, even though he's a stud, we love him. Like that, that can't be the guy on the hands team, right? Oh, if you struggle with hands, I don't expect you to be on the hands team. That's kind of common. What you think? Yeah. Yeah. Now that, that's special team stuff. And man, Jeff Banks, he's done some good things at Texas. Obviously the tight ends coach too.

You know, Texas has had a tight end drafted in each of the last three NFL drafts. And I don't know if that streak is going to continue. But I like what some of those guys are doing in that room right now. And obviously the counts in coming back will help as well. But the special team stuff, man, like after, hey, bringing this up after the Georgia game last year, where that, I mean, shoot, the Georgia game two years ago, the SEC title game, where Texas lost an SEC championship because of the third phase, you would think, well, that would be a wake up call that we got to get some of this stuff buttoned up. And here we are, you know, four games into your six for Jeff Banks, because he's been here the whole time. Steve Sarkies has been here. And we're still talking about some of these issues there. We're still talking about special teams. This, I don't like it. I don't like it. But that's what the buy week is for. We can get these things corrected. Yep. And let's ball. Yeah. Penalties to on special teams have been problematic. So yeah, all that stuff has to get fixed over the buy week.

Look, Texas is not a finished product right now. Nobody is again, there are four, no number one team in the country. But there's a good news is there's things that can be cleaned up. And if they are, the sky feels like the limit for this team. All right, we'll keep the conversation going. We'll get to some reasons for optimists. Obviously it's not all bad right now. What has you feeling good about this Texas football team going into the red river shootout next week? And we'll get to that with Madison Davis coming up next unlocked on long haunts. I'll bet first a shout out to our friends at five hour energy. If you've got a sweet tooth like I do, you know how tough it can be to find that perfect treat without all of the sugar. All right, welcome back. Locked on long horse. Your team every day, Madison Davis from Locked on Long Horns hit joining us here on Locked on Long Horns. Again, subscribe on YouTube podcast, social media, wherever you get your content, you can find Long Horns hit for more short term Texas talk. All right. So we talked about some of the things that need fixing over this by week, but there's obviously a lot of good with this Texas football team, Madison. Again, I'll throw this one to you first. It might just be the defense, but there's certain element or aspect of the defense that has you feeling like, okay, no, the same afloat. This team really can be one of the top teams in the country all season long. I'm loving the way this defense is bowling out BK. I can't lie to you. Lance Jackson. My man had a great game coach. These are usually said this was actually his best game of his entire career here at Texas. Yeah. So I do. I agree. And obviously on the other side, his territory, Colin Simmons getting after it.

I'm loving how your fraud is getting after it in the middle. My secondary, the nice and physical. Yes, I know, Beaumasco had a few, you know, PIs and things like that. But I like that. You're physical, you know, yeah, I like it. All all my all my bets. I'm betting all of my chips on, hey, on deep as the coordinator, Will must. Yeah. How good you been, Matt. Like, you know, a lot of long worn fans, myself too, kind of question the decision to get rid of Pete quit Kowski, right? Like PK and done a pretty good job. Texas is defense. The two years they made the playoff very good. And I know they kind of fell off a little bit in the second half of last season. And the numbers took a dip for more. They were in 2023 and 2024. But I don't remember a lot of Texas fans being like, he's got to go. He's got to go start a bit of a bold move and Will much chance to resume is amazing. But it had been a while since he was like actually coordinating a defense. So there were some folks asking questions. And I think they were fair questions to be asked. But I know the season's not done long way to go. But it sure feels like Madison, like everything coach boom was brought in to do.

He's doing right now on that side of the football. As you stated, his resume, we have to remember, he was a part of that Georgia coaching staff. Yeah. Getting that defense right down there in Georgia. He's here to do the same thing here, getting after football, physical football, hard knows. And look, I love our secondary. Some people don't like, you know, I don't know. I love our secondary. I like how physical they are. I like they don't play with you at the line. It's jam and let's go. Let's go. We're going to go next. I love it. Yeah, a lot more physical, a lot more aggressive that that final touchdown drive that Tennessee had not with standing. It was a little a little soft understanding that you're playing with the lead. But obviously that touchdown, a playbo mask, I would like to have back. But I mean, they gave up three points offensively in what 58 and a half minutes of that football game against a Josh, I pull offense with a bunch of talent. So yeah, I'm glad you brought up the secondary because everyone's talking about the D. I mean, I'm glad you're not. You should. The D lines elite, maybe the best in the country. But I think of like all that the secondary has lost over the last two years, Madison. You go back, now, John A. Barron on the Thorpe award a couple years ago, falling out for

the Broncos. Andrew McCubo is a stud. He's balling out for the Eagles right now. Obviously, Michael Taft, we know how much he meant to this team. He's making plays in the NFL with Miami as a rookie, Manny Muhammad. So you're three year starter at corner, making plays for the best. Look, all those guys are really good and Texas lost all of them and they haven't hit the portal in the secondary as hard as they have in some other spot. Obviously, Bob Masco is a transfer guy, but like a lot of it's been, okay, we're going to recruit Kate Phillips in the development. We're going to recruit Grayson Littleton, Jolani McDonnell, Kobe Black, Derek, Kobe Black, all those guys and they've all gotten better. So credit to coach Boomb. Obviously, I like that Blake Idiens back, Mark Orfe doing a great job to the secondary area. We've got enough love. Now, they'll be tested more as the season goes along. We know this. I think those guys, I'm glad you brought them up because I'm not sure they're getting enough love for the way that they've played at this point. I totally agree. I totally agree. I'm loving it. There's one that really sticks out to me. Jolani McDonnell, I love how he comes downhill and make bad intentions, bad intentions and

let you know this is going to be a long game. It's going to be long. You're not going to just sit here and just run. No, that's not how it's going to go. I was going to have to give a shout out to our front seven, right? They kind of make it easy for us in the back game, but we handle business when they're ball thrown in the air. Yeah, it's a great point. I saw again, Faeson Brandon Tennessee's quarterback through freshman. He looked like a true freshman. Yes, he did. The Will Mush champ and all the players, obviously, for that. But I saw, I think the Texas cornerbacks, all of them together, or targeted 10 times in that football game, and they gave up four catches for 44 yards. It's pretty good. You can't do it really good. Better than that, over a four quarter, 60 minute football game. Again, Josh Hyple on the road, Neelan Stadium. Yes, that quarterback's young, but he's looked pretty good to this point. And Texas made him look like a freshman in high school, more than a freshman in college if we're being honest. But yeah, Jolani McDonnell, that guy, I don't think he gets enough, enough love nationally now. I think Texas fans know how good he is. I think we kind of knew last year how good he was.

He's physical. Man, that play he made on the Hail Mary too. You go back and watch that. Dude, Kate Phillips, I mean, it was a one-on-one in Kate Phillips, right now that it's been in the best position. I was based on the best throw of the day. It was. And if Jolani McDonnell, is it some guys try to catch it, some guys get handsy and grabby, and there's a penalty. Jolani McDonnell is like, no, what? I'm jumping up. I'm batting that thing away. We're not losing this football game to hell with that. That player right there? Yeah, exactly. Do the stuff. The store. A box with the thumbs down, whatever you wanted it. Any celebration he earned it. That's again, not a play that a lot of people are going to talk about, but that was the dagger. Texas needed him to do that right there. That's crucial. Hey, if you watch the game, you know he doesn't do that. Six. Yeah, exactly. Oh, my, this show would not be a lot of fun. I don't know if I want to see you. I don't know if I want to see anybody of Texas a lot of that. I don't want to talk. Yeah, exactly. But Landschat, I'm glad you, I know we're going kind of back and forth here, but man, he

fads Madison. I feel like opens up so much more. And I hate the people who don't watch the games. They're going to hear us talk about, and I know none of our audience, like all of these people are watching the games and the worst about, but like national people, you look at the box score for tackles for Landschat. Didn't have a sack. Didn't have a TFL and it's like, why are you all hyping this guy up? He, Colin Simmons, like, owes Landschat and a steak dinner or something. I know he's making a lot more NIL money than one of them. Those five and a half sacks that Simmons had, three of them, I think directly related to Lance Jackson getting pressure on the other side. He hit the quarterback a couple of times. If that guy is that good, even if he's like 80% of that good, that's going to make life easier for number one. And for everybody else on this Texas defense, that is the X factor for me going forward. I couldn't agree with you more, man. I really couldn't. And his pressure, his presence was known, right? And, and phase on the clock sped up. Okay, where's he at? Where's he at? There he is.

There he is. Oh, there's one. You know, like his clock sped up. And I loved how that made phase on Brandon turn into a freshman. He looked like a freshman out there. Like you say, he looked like a freshman out there. And it was blatant. I love that. I felt like that was a key to victory in order for us to beat Tennessee. And it happened at the dope. Jackson also great against the run. I mean, 65275, like he is big. He is built. He's got an NFL body and there are plenty of scouts in attendance at that game. And you know, he still has a year and a half at minimum, right? He's only a two. So thank the Lord for that. You know, Collins Simmons is going after this year. We know that, but Lance Jackson will be back for at least one more season. But man, that guy is a difference maker there. And look, the national broadcast, they were giving him some love too. I'm not always the biggest Kirk Herb Shree guy, but I will give some love. He was pointing out Lance Jackson like this dude is everywhere. And that's exactly what he was. This is the whole defensive line. I mean, Tennessee's O-line Madison, that was the strength of their team or one of them.

And they, uh, to say they had a rough day, they're going to be having nightmares about Texas. But white tape orange for a long time. That's right. Kevin, can the real UT police stand up? Oh, I think we already did. I think her and Orange made a statement on that. It should have been more of a statement if they didn't, uh, be as much as they did. But, uh, yeah, that was a strong showing by the right shade of orange for sure. All right, we've got one segment to go. Uh, we'll talk about this Oklahoma game a little bit. I know we still have a week and a half, but some early thoughts on how Texas matches up against the sooners. And again, a few more things that the Longhorns can work on between now and red river. That's coming up with Madison Davis right here on Lockdown Longhorns. So Hilton called to me the superstition concierge to make your fan rituals a reality. Need a room to match your lucky number? We got you. Want to make sure our team doesn't wash your lucky jersey? Oh, that smells lucky. Hilton's unmatched hospitality can keep up with any superstition. Even a marching bandwink up call it 555 and 55 seconds. Hit it! When you need a team that will do whatever it takes on game day, it matters where you stay. Hilton for this day. All right, welcome back locked on longhorns. Your team every day, BK alongside Madison Davis from locked on long horns hit. Definitely check out the great content he's putting out every single day talking about these Texas long horns. So we've got ten days now for Texas and Oklahoma. Obviously the long horns in their only buy right now and then it will be eight great conference games to wrap up the way they're freezing and there's some toughies on the schedule. You know, we thought Texas OU was going to be a super tough game.

I know it's the red river shootout. It makes me get crazy in the cotton bowl and Madison when I was a student at Texas, Oklahoma was really good. The long horns were not and somehow the long horns found a way to be do you a couple of times. So this is a throw the stats, throw the records, throw the rank out the window kind of game typically. But I know you've watched some OU football. You watched the play George the last weekend and I'm sure you want some of that Michigan. Is there anything the sooners do offensively against this Texas defense that has you super worried about that part of the game? Rattle John Mathier and you win the game. That's all for me. Yeah, I mean, it kind of feels like he might rattle himself. That's the thing. Obviously Texas got to him last year. Every long horn fan knows that the sooners haven't scored a touchdown against Texas in the last two red river shootouts and you know, it was like it felt crazy when it happened the first time like all this is sick. This won't happen again. And then it did happen again. It's like, all right, there's no way.

And now all the sudden here we are. We're helping chickens before they hatch. But the way Oklahoma's offense is not going in the way Texas is defense is going. There's going to be a lot of people not just long horn fans saying, hey, that streak's going to continue. Let's continue. Let's run it back. Let's run it back again and again and again. I want to see it. The folks want to see it. Give us a soak. Give us a sow. Yeah, exactly. But what about the Texas offense? You know, Oklahoma's defense is still good. I you look in the box. They gave up 41 in Georgia. John Mathier kept throwing the ball away. He was fumbling it, scooping school, whatever. Oklahoma's defense can only do so much. They're getting absolutely nothing from the offensive side of the football. But again, we talk about things from the Texas offense that need to get improved. It's just like certain stats or whatever. Is there a player or two that you think maybe can provide a spark to this offense that you'd like to see more of coming out of the buy than what we've seen so far? I I I talked about this guy before and I'm going to talk about your main bishop junior.

I I can't I can't say enough about him. I can't he he showed he showed that he has what it takes already in the Tennessee brother's here when he had that deep that crosser. Perfect throw to or by archman excuse me. I think he can provide a spark to this offense. Obviously, how he was mothers didn't play and according to Steve Sarkey's in coach Steve Sarkey's in I'm sorry. It seems like he will be able to play against Oklahoma. But I don't I don't think he wants to really, you know, kind of put that out quite yet. Yeah. But I I do I like Derek Cooper too, man. I like the young guys. I really do. Yeah, man, I'm with you. Draman bishops the name that I brought up. I think most longhorn fans are bringing up because it feels like every time he's on the field, good things are happening. Good things. And that that catch he made it was out of bounce. Remember that play where he went up in the air and got pushed out of bounce along the right sideline on that deep shot. It's like, whoa. Like the hand icon nation there, the body control again. I know it doesn't count. But like that was a big time play right there for him to make.

And here's here is what makes this, but this is exactly what came this came to my head as soon as he did that coach. These are keys and early on in the week. He said, don't rule out your main vision. You're going to the deep inside of football. Don't rule that out. I was like, I kind of want to see some more from him before I agree. I agree. Like let's let's get the defense done. Need him. No shot. It's your main bishop. He might be good enough to play a lot of snaps on that side of the ball. But like, right. It's one of the best defenses in the country right now. Your offense coach needs all the help that it can get. He needs all the help. That guy can help you out a lot. So I'm with and then man, Jabbar Jalook, the running backs coach. But when you're a position coach, you work with what you got. But I think that has some good talent there in that running back room. I know they spent a lot of money on those guys. Like watching what Jayden ball did last year and watching what he's doing right now with Florida. Obviously sad. He's not a longhorn tech. Florida's got money too. But can we and some of it's on the offensive line? I understand that but usually Madison, the team that runs the football better in Texas

so you wins the game. And last year for all the trea wise and hers faults, he showed up in this game every time we were a game that he was a part of, he showed up. So you don't go on that. Obviously, you don't have trea wise and are anymore. So what in the football Oklahoma can't run it worth the lick. I don't think Texas needs like 180 yards to out game. They might need 80 and that could be enough to out game them. But that's to me, that's the thing that has everyone talks about archmaning this that and the other. You got to be able to run the ball. Maybe it's Derek Cooper. Maybe it's smothers coming back. But whatever it is, whoever it is, that's the one thing that I really hope they're trying to hit home over this next week and a half, you know. I can't agree with you more, man. I want to see this running game succeed. Remember, this is what we want to see coming into the season. All right. We want to better running game this season. And honestly, it showed us though, even in the Ohio State game in that fourth quarter, our guys were leaning on their guys and we were getting, we were getting like six, seven a pop, right? Great point. Yeah. And the Tennessee game too, like that first drive and then that touchdown drive in the fourth

quarter. And I get you're not going to run at will. The other guys are on scholarship to to quote Mac Brown, but like, why is it Madison? It's like, there's only a few drives that we can point out where they've run it. It should be there's a few drives where they didn't run it well, but every other drive in it. And instead of seeing the way around. Yeah, man. Okay. I did. I said this in one of my videos, right? I felt like we were a bit predictable when it came to running the football. I went, it was like, sometimes it was like, okay, I can see we're going to run the football. We're going to run the football. And then when they would, Tennessee's defense of line got to the spot, got us in the back for you. So maybe it's, it's, we need to be less predictable. Maybe we need to scheme this up a little better. I don't know. That's how I saw it. Yeah. Yeah. They just, you know, they tried to run the ball, start in the band in it. It was 36 carries. Now, some of that were sacks. There were six acts in there for orange, but just 19 pass attempts, 36 carries. So even though I thought the passing game was more effective, they wanted to control the clock a little bit.

They wanted to give their defense a break. But, you know, and you're rushing it for 1.7 yards of carry, you're not really doing either of those things. So that's, that's a big area of improvement that hopefully we see from this Texas team.
