Today on the show, we are talking about how to train when motivation is low and more specifically why this problem shows up in the first place, what's actually happening in your brain and nervous system when motivation drops and why the way most people think about motivation is probably backwards. Because one of the most interesting things you see when you look at the research is that motivation isn't some stable personality trait and it's not even something that reliably precedes action. A lot of the time, it's actually the result of action and that single insight changes
how you think about training on days where you just don't feel like it. So let's start with motivation itself. From a neuroscience perspective, motivation is tightly linked to dopamine signaling but not in the way pop culture usually frames it. Dopamine isn't about pleasure. It's about anticipation and prediction. It's about whether your brain believes a behavior is worth the effort based on past experience. When motivation is low, what that usually means is that your brain has decided consciously or unconsciously that the cost of training feels high relative to the expected reward. That can happen for a lot of reasons. Accumulated fatigue raises the perceived cost. Stress, poor sleep and caloric restriction all shift the nervous system toward a more conservative state where effort feels more expensive. Even boredom plays a role because novelty is a strong driver of dopamine release and repetitive training without variation can blunt that signal over time. What's important here is that low motivation is often a signal but not necessarily the signal people think it is. It doesn't always mean you're lazy, undisciplined or doing something wrong.
Sometimes it's just a reflection of your nervous system, trying to conserve resources. The mistake a lot of people make is interpreting low motivation as a reason not to train at all. When in reality, it's just information about your current internal state. There's also a psychological component worth talking about. Humans are very bad at predicting how they'll feel once they start moving. There's a well-documented gap between anticipated effort and experienced effort. Before training, effort feels abstract and heavy. Once you're actually engaged, the brain recalibrates. Blood flow increases, neurotransmitters shift, and perceived exertion often drops relative to what you expected. This is one reason why motivation so often appears after movement rather than before it. Action changes brain chemistry in real time. Even low intensity movement increases dopamine, no repinephrine, and endorphins, which can rapidly change how effort feels. Another layer here is identity and habit. When training is tightly linked to identity, meaning you see yourself as someone who trains, rather than someone who tries to feel motivated, behavior becomes less dependent on moment-to-moment
emotional states. Habits live largely in sub-cortical brain regions like the basal ganglia, which are less sensitive to fluctuations in mood. This is why experienced lifters often report that they don't think about motivation at all. They simply show up because the behavior is automated. When motivation is low, habit is what carries you through. It's also worth acknowledging that chronic low motivation can sometimes be a sign of deeper issues. Overreaching, under recovery, and long-term energy deficits can all suppress motivation at a biological level. In those cases, the brain isn't lying to you. It's responding to real physiological strain. That's why understanding the difference between transient low motivation and persistent motivational collapse matters. One is normal and expected. The other is a signal that something upstream needs attention. What I find fascinating is that when you zoom out, motivation stops being the main variable altogether. Consistency emerges not from feeling inspired, but from reducing friction. Lowering the activation energy required to start training makes motivation less relevant.
When the environment is set up so that training is the default option, the brain doesn't need to negotiate with itself as much. Less decision-making means less reliance on willpower, which is a finite cognitive resource. At a deeper level, training when motivation is low is really about understanding that feelings are transient, but systems are stable. The nervous system responds to inputs. Movement is an input. Stress is an input. Sleep is an input. Motivation is downstream of all of that. When you stop treating motivation as the gatekeeper and start seeing it as feedback, the entire relationship with training changes. You're no longer waiting to feel a certain way before acting. You're acting in a way that eventually changes how you feel. That's really the core idea I want to leave you with. No motivation doesn't mean you can't train. It means your brain is negotiating effort and reward based on current conditions. Sometimes the most powerful thing you can do is introduce a small amount of action and let physiology do the rest. Over time, those repeated exposures, reshape expectations, recalibrate effort, perception,
and make motivation less necessary altogether. Thank you so much for tuning into my podcast, Your Spot for the latest in health and fitness.
