How HIGH Should Expectations Be for Bowen Byram in His First Season in Chicago?

One of the biggest additions to the Blackhawks this season over the summer was getting bowened. Byroom trading most notably the fourth overall pick for him in a package with Buffalo. The Blackhawks acquired him and extended him significantly, projecting him to be the number one defenseman for this group. From now into the future for the duration of what should be the end of the rebuild and into some contention. So what are the expectations for Byroom this year? He's going to get top five on five minutes, top power play minutes.

2:03If you listen to our show on Thursday, maybe he gets penalty kill minutes as well. He's going to get a lot of ice time. This is the first time he's been a number one in his career. What's a fair expectation for Bowen? The expectations should be high. This is a guy that Kyle Davidson gave up a lot to get and then signed him to at the time, the richest deal for a defenseman that doesn't kick in till next year. Yeah. So I know it was quickly surpassed. Yes, by his former teammate, Kyle McCart. But you know, this is one thing that I'm like, can't wait for this. I'm saying that facetiously is when he has some struggles, we're going to hear people say, well, he's a $12.5 million defense. Technically, he's not this year. So if you only play his half as good as a $12.5 million defenseman, he's living up to his pay grade. But he's got high expectations. There's a, you know, and he sounds like he welcomes that like he wants to prove that.

3:09And if you look at his career numbers, he's never had the opportunity he's going to get here playing on teams that had really good defenseman ahead of him, you know, in Colorado, he had Kale McCart and then Devon Tave showed up. And that was their top pair. You weren't sure to at the time. Yeah, you weren't break, you weren't breaking those guys up. They played well together. And then he gets the Buffalo. And while all his numbers went up because he was getting more opportunity, he still wasn't getting the same kind of opportunity. He's going to get here. You know, you have Ross, Rosmos, Rosmos, the lean. You had own power, very talented group of defenders. But if you look at his last, his two full seasons in Buffalo, first of all, played all 82 games, which was something that was a problem in his early in his career. That was some injuries and concussions that he seems to be over that hump. Two years ago, first full season, Buffalo seven goals, career high 31 assists for career high 38 points.

4:11At the time that while playing a career high 22 42 a night, it's crazy to think he was like the third option in Buffalo, but still 22 minutes. Right. That's very little power. That's crazy. Yeah. And then he had last season, all 82 games, career high 11 goals tied the career high with 31 assists again 42 points while playing slightly less 22 20 a night. But when you look at that, so he's had 41 points last year, 31 assists each of the last two seasons. I think 40 points is like bare minimum. I had season. Like if he only gets 40 points, you should be disappointed. Absolutely. I think this is, you've got some, some projections, but I think anything under 55 points is going to be a disappointment. It's interesting that you say under 55 because three different outlets projecting what he could do this year for the black hawks, the athletic NHL.com and ESPN as far as their projections for this season go for biram.

5:17The athletic has them at 12 goals 39 assists 51 points ESPN similarly 14 goals 37 assists 51 points and NHL.com believes he's a 50 point defenseman this year. So those three are pretty locked step in the projections and expectations of him. But I agree. Like, and it's going to sound greedy because your leading defenseman last year was Louis crevier with 26 points and seven goals. To say that someone who could put up double that would be disappointing. But this is a guy that is coming in as when he was drafted fourth overall in 2019. Like, this was the player a lot of people were expecting him to be a guy who could be a number one who was going to be an offensive generator who is going to play significant minutes. And I don't want the black hawks to run him into the ground first year playing him 27 28 minutes on a or anything like that. And we saw that with Seth Jones when he was here playing that much time.

6:17But I would venture a guess that he's going to get more than 22 like he might be in that 24 maybe 25 minute range because of how much he's going to get utilized. And black hawks really haven't had a guy since Seth Jones that could eat that much minutes, but be that effective. He was also the last defenseman. Seth Jones was that reached 50 points for the defense for the for the black hawks. So. McDonald's is putting value back on the menu. I agree if he's below if he's between 55 and 50, it's going to be like, I wish it could have been more, but that's that's going to still be good for a team that made a 11 point improvement year over year from last year or from two years ago to last year, while not having a top producing offensive defenseman in their group. You add that to it that's going to make a significant impact. I think if he can get to 55 points and he's going to get an opportunity the the power play with him with the dark once he's healthy Patrick Keynes there.

8:24We'll see how the black cox utilized Roman cancer of and Anton front del Frank Nez are all these guys on that top power play unit. That's where I feel like he's going to make a lot of that point impact is on that power play distributing to those guys who can really, you know, fire the puck and and distribute. And that's something he hasn't had a lot of time to do in his career last year, he had one power play goal and six assists on the power play playing only 133 minutes on the power play, which was the first time he clipsed. 100 minutes of power play time in a season that's not a lot of power play time when you put over 82 games that's like a minute a little over a minute of game, you know, a minute and 20 game, whatever it is not a lot of time. And if you figure you average maybe free power play is a night. Yeah, that's not he's going to get that 100 he's going to get that 133 minutes by Thanksgiving. Yeah, in his career.

9:24Bone Byarm has four power play goals and 13 power play six assists and six NHL seasons. He should be able to surpass his career totals easily the first half of the season, I think. That's where I think the numbers are going to jump. So if he had 41 points last season or actually 42 points last season with very little power play time. You know, he had seven points in 133 power power play minutes. So say he triples that power play time this year. And then he's going to get that 50 points. There you go. Add that to the five on five numbers. Yeah, right. That's why I think 55 points is should be the bottom the bare minimum of what he should hit for an honor. Like I at 60 points 65 points. If the power play is clicking and then you get that top five on five production with counter that's right.

10:25Um, you know, and I think we've got to be very proud when he's back and this team just better offensively. And having the puck more. I think, you know, he can hit all those offensive numbers that that they expect them to. So yeah, I have very high expectations for him. Usually when a guy like this comes into this situation, I kind of tamper my expectations, but I don't want to be disappointed, but listen, this is what he wants and this is what he's going to do. They both believe it. So go do it. Only two black hawks in the last 20 years have eclipsed 60 points as a defenseman. Duncan Keith did it twice in his two Norris seasons. 69 points in 2009, 2010, 61 points in 2013, 14. And if you'll remember, Eric Gustafson had 60 points. He's not in the Norris then. He did not. But he should have. And he had 60 points in that 2018, 2019 season. So if Byron can add his name to that list of the last 20 years to eclipse 60 points, that is absolutely like bang on for this season.

11:30That would be tremendous. And if you have a guy like that with the group around him, Spencer Knight and goal as your starter and improved forwards group, you know, you're expecting, you know, offensive improvements from Bidard and Nazar. And we'll see what cancerov brings you and front del and all these guys. Like if Byron adds 60 points, like this is a team that that's that improves the team offensively. You're scoring more goals, which means you have the puck more, which means you're giving up less goals in theory. This is a team that if he has a season like that, you're talking about potentially in that wild card chase. If not better, I'm excited for it. He's an overall very excited for Patrick Kane to be back. One Bidard gets on the ice, all that stuff. But Bowen Byron's impact this year is going to be a big tipping point for how much this team can improve from last year. Absolutely.
