I've been 10 years. All right, thanks to Collagen, I appreciate it. Our phone number, if you'd like to join us, it's 800-823-8255 and let's go to Nancy, Nancy Welcome. Thank you so much for taking my call. I love your show. How are you? Good, thank you. We have a problem with our local community water company. We have a house that is almost 40 years old. We had it built so we know there was no previous water connection. About a year or two after the house was built, we decided to have a well drilled so that
we could have a sprinkler system that would not add a lot of cost to our water supply. So we did that and the only thing the well water is used for is for the sprinkler system. About 10 years ago or so, we started getting a letter from the water company asking us if we had any connection and we turned the letter indicating no, we had no connection and then five years later or something like that, they sent us another letter and they've been doing this for the last 10 or 15 years. That's been fine until this year. All of a sudden this year they're saying, even if there's no connection between our well water and the household water, they want us to buy a backflow preventer and to have it installed and for us to maintain that. I've been to some hearings and with my logical mind, I see absolutely no reason to have
a backflow preventer installed. And on your program a couple of weeks ago, I heard you telling somebody that, oh, the problem might be the backflow preventer and I have never ever heard before of a backflow preventer possibly causing anyone any problems. So can you help me with my case? Well, I guess the first question I have is since the municipality was writing your letters, this is required by code. Yes, but I think the code has been changed more this year because I went to several of the meetings and it said that there was a word that was changed so that it expands the Florida Department of Environmental Protection's expands there. And it's not grandfathered.
Well, yeah, they're expanding. I don't know if somebody has a deal with a company that makes backflow preventer. Well, I guess where I'm getting going, Nancy, is if it's code, it's code. And if they're not going to be called changed. Yeah, okay. Well, can you tell me, is there any way that my household can be making the wall? What are the community water worse if we don't have any connection? No, but a backflow preventer would prevent, you know, it's usually required in a lot of areas as protection on irrigation systems because if it got a fertilizer or insecticides, somehow breached into the irrigation system and was pulled back into your home, which
is a possibility. That's what a backflow preventer does is stops that siphoning, if you will. It would go not into the community water, but it would go into the well, which could, you know, I'm like I'm saying I'm an expert in this, but could create pollution into the well water, which could be, you know, in the aquifer, I don't know how far back they look at going, you know, it's all connected, but it wouldn't be going into the city water. So I don't know legally how that's handled. But what do you think? What is all connected? Well, I mean, you have an aquifer under land everywhere. I mean, there's many documented. So if if if fertilizer breached into the land, the water irrigation system, like I have a backflow connector on my house, because I have an irrigation system, because your
irrigation system ever been connected to your household water? Yes. Okay, see, ours has never been connected. So, but it's connected to the well, isn't it? It's only connected to the well. It is not connected to the household water. So, so, and again, it's, I don't know if I can explain this well enough, but I'm just assuming, which always gets you in trouble, that since it's connected to the wall, well, it's connected to mother nature's water supply and everybody sharing in that. Okay, so you think that everybody who has public water needs to have a backflow preventor? I didn't say that. I said, I assuming that's the way they're writing that law. That's what I'm saying. I'm assuming that's why that law is written that way. I don't know. I don't know what their thoughts are, but I know in my county, because it aggravates me
every time I've got to pay for the maintenance on it, and testing on it. And I think I use my irrigation system 10 times a share. So, all I'm saying is I am assuming even though you're not connected to, and I don't know if this is true, but that's a question you can certainly ask. If I'm not connected to the municipal water system, but I am connected to the well, why do I need a backflow preventor? And maybe that is the answer. I don't know what else the answer is, but I'm assuming they're protecting the well because they're sharing in the water from the aquifer, but I don't know that. That's not the case because I've already told them we are not connected. And the local water company agrees with me, but a couple of months ago, the president of the local water company retired after only six years and moved back to, what does this
show me, Missouri? He moved back to Missouri rather than continue with the controversy. But there was some work change. I looked online in Ohio. They were allowed to be. Yeah, I don't think I'm going to be able to help you. I mean, I don't know. I know what backflow preventors do. And when you're, I think that's a, I don't know, it's code, it's code. If you want to get the code changed, I would get some, and you probably have got some specials that can help you. Far beyond what I can. Ready to feel energized and in control again? In February of 2024, celebrated illustrator and children's book author, Patreon Ather's
and her husband Michael, nailed letters to dozens of friends and family members to let them know that they had died by suicide. By the time you get the shalliter book, Petra and I will be dead. Next stop, Wonderland. Patreon and Michael were by all accounts healthy, happy, and in love. Why did they do it? And what did it do to the people they left behind? I would have given a million reasons to not leave this world had I known. I keep coming back to a truly hope that Patreon was a thousand percent on board with the plan. Do you think of him as having killed her? Yes, I do. I hold Michael responsible for my mother's death. I'm Leon Nefak. And I'm Alice Gregory. Together we set out to interview everyone who got one of Patreon Michael's letters. As one married couple, trying to understand another. Listen to death of an artist on the iHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. And I just told you what my thoughts were.
And you're telling me that that's not true. And it may not be. I'm not saying it is. But I don't know what the reasoning is. All right. Sorry. I couldn't help you. All right. We'll take that break. We'll come back. We got Hank, Phil, Terry, Ron, and it's a role in Saturday. You're at home with Gary Sullivan right here. I'm 55 KRC, the talk station. All right. Back at it. We go 1218 on your Saturday at home with Gary Sullivan. Let's go to Hank, Hank, welcome. Hello, Gary. Yes, sir. I really appreciate your show. Thank you. The reason for my call today is that it has to be one of our service providers, probably the mowing people, put a divot in there, some meant driveway in the front. And it's about an inch and a half wide, two and a half inches long, about three quarters of an inch deep. It looks like they dropped a piece of metal on there and it just chipped out.
So I don't know what in the world, how I need to fix that. So give me that size, how deep is it? About three quarters of an inch. Okay. And how wide? An inch and a half by two and a half. Oh, a big piece. And how long? It's only been that way a week or so. How long is that divot? Six inch or two feet? No, no, no, one and a half inches by two and a half inches by about three quarters deep. Okay. An angle. Yeah, it angles. Yeah. So there's different packaging compounds that probably aren't going to match your concrete number one. Some of them can only be used down to three aces, three aces of an inch. In fact, most of them.
I would probably, there's different mixes that Quick Creed has. I wouldn't use a hydraulic cement. I wouldn't use a patching cement. There's some synthetic, non-sementacious patches that are limited to only three aces of an inch in depth also. I would be, I'd lean to that and just put it in three aces, you know, thicknesses. And then Quick Creed makes an anchoring cement. So let's focus on those two. An anchoring cement, so it's in there, especially products, they're all cement and sand and products to make it adhere to existing concrete. The anchoring cement would be like, if you were putting stadium seats into a concrete slab, you'd drill a hole where you'd put anchoring cement in certain pins.
So it dries very hard. It can be, it can be at different thicknesses beyond three aces of an inch. So at first blush, I would probably use that anchoring cement in there and bring it up to about three aces of an inch to the surface. And then I would let it harden and dry and probably not circle back for 28 days till it hardens all the way. Oh. Well not all the way. But anyway, it'd only be a little dip of about three aces of an inch. You won't even feel it or see it or recognize it, okay? And then I think you've got a couple of choices. What I like is a Dish Coding product. It's called Rock Patch. It's non-sementacious. Looks like concrete. It adheres very well to concrete.
It can only be applied to three aces of an inch thick. So you could put that as a almost treated like sparkling compound, okay, for concrete. And use it that way. It's got a long life. That's why I'm recommending it. There's also a cementaceous way to do it. It's called vinyl concrete patcher. It is a recommended product for 40 years until this other one came in the market. It's a powder. It's mixed with water. It's got a concrete bonding agent in it. It will bond to the anchoring cement that's into the crevice. It can be applied up to three aces of an inch also. And you could use that as the patch also. So you would do anchoring cement. I think we got that one. That would be good. That would be good. And then your choices are Rock Patch, which is a synthetic.
Or the, in less 15 years or the vinyl concrete patcher, which will last about five years, much cheaper. And it's a cementaceous product. Okay. Probably the Rock Patch, when you say, I would, it's a little more. Yeah, it's more flexible. It's easier to apply. It's going to last longer. Neither one's going to match the concrete exactly. My first blush is the Rock Patch probably come closer. It's kind of a standard gray. The bottom concrete patcher is a little bit more whiteish, but it's, it's, it's a whiteish gray. It's just a lighter, lighter color. But the biggest thing is the filler. That's, that's the biggest deal. Because that's a chunk. That's a chunk that's. Yeah, it is. So. Yeah. That would be my die on it. Yeah, it's D-A-I. D-A-I-C-H coatings. D-A-I-C-H coatings.com.
And again, it's called Rock Patch. Okay. And the anchoring cement is a quick read product you'll find out anywhere. Okay, okay. Like in the box store. Yeah. Okay. Wonderful. All right. Wonderful. Very good. Thank you so much. You're quite welcome. Thanks for the call. All right. And again, our phone number is 800-8238-255. And we got Terry. Terry, welcome. Hi. How are you today? Doing fine. Thanks. Hey. I made a mess. I'm hoping you can help me figure out how to clean it up. All right. We'll see. My husband through the years has used the fiber aluminum roof coating around my chimney to seal it. And I've kept the brush in the garage in a jar. Oh gosh, it's been in probably five or six years.
I keep paint thinner in it and just kept it there. Well, used it last weekend. Set the jar on my porch. The wind blew, knocked it over. Well, I got all the silver up. That was no problem. Now I'm just left with the dark stain. I don't know if it's from the pigment that's been in this jar throughout the year. I don't know. It just looks like I would kind of look like a coffee stain. I've put paint thinner on that and scrubbed it with a brush. And it lightened it some very little. And then I took a soap to it. But it's still there. So you consider it dry or oily or? No, it's all walk up there too. But it's on my front porch, of course.
Of course. Yeah, that porch has been for concrete probably 25 years. I think it's dry. I'm sure. It's here right here. So a lot of that is a is a tar base product. That's why I was wondering if it's. Yeah, it feels dry. It looks like a coffee stain. I don't know. I got a couple ways to go. So there's products like good old caracene. But I don't know if I want to recommend that. We'll liquefy it. And scrubbing it and kitty litter absorbing it is one option. I think. Yeah, I think then after I cleaned it, I thought, sand. He always used sand to absorb oils and stuff. Right.
So I put sand on it and left it on it overnight. And I think it took some, but not much. Yeah. Yeah, I think I would lean. I hate to say something. I mean, spend money and then have it not work. That's. You got a Google on it home. I don't think this is a long term solution, but it might help me make a decision on which way I want to go. Google is good for removing tar stains on a car. Things like that. If you got a Google on just. I think I do. Saturate that on one side scrubbing it probably not. If you like, sit there for about five minutes, 10 minutes, and then put a little bit more on there, and then scrub it, and then run it with a cotton cloth. See if it helps lighten it. OK. And if it does, you would have a choice of continuing to do that. Or there is a product.
This is where I was trying to decide. There's a product called ACT Cleaner. ACT Cleaner was used in the BP spill in the Gulf years ago. Yeah, I didn't have any dawn. I used to call my office as it says, because 95% grease. I did scrub it with that. Yeah. Yeah. This is a really weird product. It is actually a living organism that eats oils in tar. OK. It looks like white flour. And you sprinkle it on there. And you just let it go. And I've used this, and it worked good on really heavy oil stains. And I even used it once where I had some asphalt roof
shingles sitting on a concrete that had permeated into the concrete. And it got rid of it. It got rid of that. So I'm wondering if that would, because that particular product is very, very much oil-based. It's got fibers in it. But it's kind of a grease and tar mixture. And it's ACT. Do you get it online or is it full? Get it online. And it's ACT Cleaners.com. ACT like Tom Tom. No, act ACT. ACT Cleaners.com. So there's a couple things you could do. Just kind of, today we're doing a lot of reviewing, because he's been some tough questions. Try the Goo Gone. And if you feel like you're making progress with that or a carousine, and it's not too much work, I'd stay with it.
If it's way too much work and it kind of lightens it, let's try something else. And then I think I would try the ACT and see if that does it. I mean, that's the Grand Pupa, if it is an oil-based product. Or somewhere in there, if you want to try a little carousine, just be careful. You want to do that hot day with a flashpoint of carousine. Yeah, that would be tricky. But I'll hold a bigger mess then. Yeah, because sometimes in hardware stores, you can get like a cord of carousine, or maybe even a gown pre-packaged. And you could just try a little of that too. Now, if it doesn't come up and I decide to paint the bush, is that, do you think that would even cover it? Well, then it will cover it, but then the question is, will it bleed through when it gets hot?
Yeah. Because that tar will sometimes get gooey. You've seen it on streets. That's tar, that's different than the roof coatings. But it can still get sticky and it may bleed through. Let's see if we can bleach it out a little bit, doing what we're doing here, and see what it looks like at that point. Okay. All right, you have to do, I believe we'll do, have some of that goo going. So I'll try that first. Try that first. Put it on liberally. Let it sit. And see what happens if we can scrub some of that and pad some of that up. It might be a process, but see if that doesn't, see if that helps, see if it fades at the wall. Yeah, when I make a mess, I make a big one. No, the wind did that, the wind did that, the wind did that. It did, I set it there and I thought, okay, it's gonna be good here. And then I guess it probably laid there for probably 10 or 15 minutes
before I knew that it'd fall and over. Just enough time to soak in, of course. Yep. Always in there. Well, let's see where we go. Let me know. Okay, well, thank you so much. And you have a great holiday as a final talk. Give me more than. Very good, thank you much. Appreciate it. All right, let's take a little break. We come back, we have Phil and Ron. If you'd like to join us, it's 800, 823, 8255. You're at home with Gary Selvin I hear on 55K or see the talk station. All right, doing a little home improvement, by the way, each and every hour of the show is available to via podcast. You can pick that up wherever you get your podcast or the I Heart app, Danny has each hour labeled, kind of generally what we talked about. And you can catch up. We do the show both Saturday and Sunday. All right, let's go to Phil, Phil, welcome. Thank you, Gary. Appreciate your service. Thank you. I have a father-glazed layer.
And his load has been out in the sunshine. And I said no, though. And it's getting particles all over you when you pick it up. So I want to find something to clean it with. And then seal it. You're almost putting it in to shade then. Yeah, well, the first thing I got a couple of questions, how old do you think that ladder is? Probably about eight to 10 years old. OK. And it's been out in the sun the whole time. No, not the whole time. It's been out in the sun that for about a year. OK. Is there any cracks in the fiberglass? No. OK. So it's just kind of tired looking. Well, it's a very, very good ladder for 12 footer heavy duty. And it's very sturdy, very reliable. But when you handle it, you get it to fall for the rest all over you. And I want to seal that up with something. Yeah. There is a product called Jogloss.
The first thing I would do is probably use a good detergent. So it's probably chalky, too, isn't it? It may be a little bit. OK. You getting any splinters off it? Yeah, when you pick it up, it gets all of your arms in your hands, yeah. Well, that kind of is going to be the problem. So fiberglass, of course, is nothing but fiberglass with a glue or something to keep it in one piece. And the finish on the ladder is usually a UV resistant to a degree product that kind of holds it together. Once that's been compromised, I don't know if there's the Jogloss product that I mentioned. That's really good for fiberglass. I know on the inside of your home, I don't know what UV resistance that product has.
And it is for like a tub where it starts collecting dirt. And you can see the fibers. And you put that on there, and it kind of seals it. But it's not going to seal it like paint's going to seal it. And so I don't know whether paint would be the thing that you would use on there. I don't think I would use like, I guess you could use like a spar urethane, which is a UV resistant urethane. Maybe like you'd use on a front door. There's no reason why it wouldn't stick on the fiberglass unless the fibers are loose. And you kind of tell me the fibers are loose. So I'd scratch the Jogloss. That's not correct. I thought I would sand it down a little bit first. You know, when you clean it up. Don't say in fiberglass, that'll get worse. It'll get worse. Oh, OK. OK. You'll fuzz all that fiberglass up, then you'll have a real mess.
So when I'd use, you know, it's going to be a, I mean, it probably should be replaced, to be honest with you. But if you want to try something and you feel like it's still safe and all that, I'd probably use detergent. In February of 2024, celebrated illustrator and children's book author, Patre Mathers, and her husband Michael, mailed letters to dozens of friends and family members to let them know that they had died by suicide. By the time you get the shalliter book, Petra and I will be dead. Next stop, Wonderland. Patra and Michael were by all accounts healthy, happy, and in love. Why did they do it? And what did it do to the people they left behind? I would have given a million reasons to not leave this world had I known. I keep coming back to a truly hope that Patre was 1,000% on board with the plan. Do you think of him as having killed her? Yes, I do. I hold Michael responsible for my mother's death. I'm Leon Nevock. And I'm Alice Gregory. Together we set out to interview everyone who got one of Patre and Michael's letters, as one married couple trying to understand another. Listen to death of an artist on the iHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts.
And just scrub the dickens of it, detergent water. Get rid of the chalkiness, get rid of dirt, get rid of the loose particles, let it dry, and come back and use like a urethane trimming ammo on it. Which is good for you. Your thane trimming ammo. Yeah. Okay, I'm gonna put this one. Because a urethane trimming ammo. Yeah, sure when it makes a urethane trimming ammo. Believe me, it's not gonna say this is for painting your fiberglass ladder. But it does work on fiberglass entry doors. So I know it'll wait here. I just don't know how long it'll last. Okay, thank you very much. All right Phil, thanks for the call, appreciate it. All right, let's go to Ron. Ron, welcome. Good speech to you again Gary. Yes sir, I'm looking for a new equation. Oh, okay. I'm done. I think. I'll just get about three weeks ago.
I had a new 16 foot garage door and opener put in. Okay. No problems with that. Last Sunday while my son was backing out of the garage. I accidentally hit the button on my fob and put the door down on top of the moving car. Did not hurt the car. Door immediately went back up. Right. Came off the tracks and I thought, oh boy, here we go. I called the people where they installed it and they came out on Tuesday and said some people would consider you to be lucky. They didn't. They said everything just worked the way it was intended to work. Right. The opener went up immediately.
No damage to it. The door, three rollers popped out of the track and there was no damage. No deaths, anything to the door. He put the rollers back in the track. Showed me how everything worked and that's all there was to it. You're living well. So yeah, that was great. He did mention the crack at the bottom of the door. There is from the middle of the door to the outside edge. Maybe it goes down half to three quarters of an inch and the weather stripping just wouldn't quite seal it. Okay. I thought slab gaffer called one.
They came out and looked and they said, we cannot help you. The problem was when the floor was poured and not anything was happened since then. Their best advice was do nothing. Maybe fell way one crack within the floor and I thought rock patch for that and go from there. So right now I'm trying to decide whether it's worth putting time and effort and money in the raising that one corner of the floor without slab jacking it, but just by making it thicker and that does not sound like a good option to me. I think maybe go from there.
So how much would you have to build up that one corner on the garage floor? Oh, three and a half and three quarters of an inch. Did the garage company have anything they could help you with in terms of like a threshold? Not that I'm aware of. Did you talk to them about that problem or no? The man that I talked with it came out and measured and sold it to me was on vacation. I'll talk to him Monday. So they make a threshold and again, how far out from the corner does that extend? To the metal door. It gradually, yeah, from the outside head, starting thick and gets thinner as you get to the metal door. Well, I think you're on the right track.
Number one is to build it up three quarters of an inch. There's certainly products you can use that including the rock patch. But I don't think it's going to last very long because there's nothing really containing the patch. It's a glob that's just sitting there. And I don't know if you're going to be able to taper that down all the way where it's going to be uniform. I think that's a tall ask. That's number one. So patching it on top of that surface is probably not a good option. They do make a threshold for garage doors. And I know of them. I haven't ever used one. But a lot of times they are adjustable. I've heard. And so I would contact them and see if there is something.
Even if they can just do maybe the first eight inches of it. Because it's going to, on that door opener, there's adjustments even on pressure. So I would talk to them to see if they have something there for you. There's even different ways to make that seal at the bottom of the door a little more far reaching by putting inside tubular foam to push that seal out further, depending on the type of seal you have for the model of the door you have. So I would pursue it. I wouldn't give up on it. But I think I would give up on the thought of trying to, you know, just, yeah. And unless you got like a wood wedge and use a construction adhesive and glued that down and painted it,
I don't know. But it's not going to do something that's going to be eight feet long. So you're going to do something in a short area and then try to build out that seal. But I think that's a good question for them. I think they may be able to help you out. Like I said, I've heard about those thresholds. There's probably some way to increase the thickness decrease and also with the seal on the door itself. Right. Also just last Thursday, I had the preseason maintenance then on my furnace, shop heater, humidifier and gas log. Uh huh. This, uh, this gas log and the stove that's in is about 30 years old. And I was sure that it was probably ready to be replaced. I asked the tech when he looked at it and he says,
well, I don't know yet. Let me clean it. See what's going on. Yeah. He, he, uh, did you say he had to make some adjustments on the, uh, the natural gas pressure coming into it because it was too high. Yeah. And by the time he left, it came on easily. No proof for washer or anything. Well, every now and then you just live and write. So, uh, congratulations on that. Ron, we got a scoot. I appreciate your call. Hopefully that threshold will work for you. We'll continue at home with Gary Selvin right here on 55 KRC, the talk station. All right, back at it. We go. We talk a lot about chimney cleaning this time of year. And I get asked the question a lot whether, uh, a gas fireplace should be periodically checked and the answer that is just based on the other caller too.
Uh, changing out the thermal couples, getting the logs put in properly, uh, cleaning the logs. Some of that you can do yourself. Some of it, uh, uh, leave it to a pro depending on your skill level. But making adjustments on that certainly can save you money and also add to the comfort in your home. So I wanted to pass that along. The other thing when we were talking about the, uh, the garage too, um, yeah, if you're patching something, uh, it's got to be surrounded by support. An example of that would be, and I've seen this a lot. If you have an asphalt driveway and you got a little depression, uh, maybe about the size of a basketball and you got cracks running through it and you can see the little sections of asphalt is kind of breaking up. Um, the issue is really what's underneath there number one.
And that's where the patch needs to be made. Uh, so you got to dig up. You can't just put the asphalt, you know, gravel and tar mixture right on top of what's failing because there is no support for that patch. It's kind of like creating a patch inside a saucer, uh, or a plate as it gets, you know, cars rolling over it or foot trivet or anything. It's going to eventually weep that patch out of the plate because there's no sides to it. So if you're making a patch and the way you would have to do that in the concrete is literally cut that concrete out and then build up and you'd still be over the surface. So maybe the answer we were focusing on building up, um, and I don't know if you want to do this. I was looking at the job side of this and maybe the garage door
coming in, so the door will be able to make some adjustments. Maybe they won't. But one of the options would be to grind across that opening of the doorway and installing an adjustable threshold. We'll let them make that decision. But so many times when we have an imbalance there, we're truly focusing on adding something when in fact, we might have to cut into something and then take something that can be inserted and raise everything up. If that makes sense, I want to pass that along also. Um, other things that we're talking about this time of year, checking different things. One of the, uh, get a lot of questions on, uh, staining underneath windows on a siding, wood siding, especially, uh, or moldings. I just went to this place, uh, this, this process of replacing some, uh,
rotted moldings from water. And a lot of times, uh, what's going on there is there's a we pole from a window. And that's great that the window is allowing moisture out. If water's getting behind there and it's showing up on, um, on the wood siding, but making sure if you see slots underneath a window or underneath a window jam, that's in case water gets behind there. It can exit out and you have it. If you have a brick house, you probably have a build after 1980, you probably have, uh, every sixth vertical mortar joint missing and you have a little screen there. Make sure those are clean because that is a source of allowing moisture to get out of an enclosed area. So there's we poles underneath the window channels, if you will, and also under brick and I, you know, I don't get up there and see a
missing mortar joint and fill it with caulking. That's not a good thing. We actually want that open and that's something to check on your walk around the house. All right, Danny Boy.
