Did Mario Cristobal just give us a clue? You are locked on canes. Your daily podcast on the Miami Hurricanes. Part of the locked on podcast network. Your team every day. Happy Friday. We made it. Also on this episode of Locked on Canes, why it's so important to emphasize the second half in this one. Mario Cristobal has complimented Clemson on how well they played in the second half of games. And I think there's a reason for that. We're going to identify the players who must step up if Miami is going to come out of Death Valley with the dub. Apparently, the Wake Forest coach who lost to Miami at home two weeks ago doesn't think

Miami is all that physical. Some bulletin board material for the future. Today's episode of Locked on Canes is brought to you by Game Time. Download the Game Time app. Create your account and use code Locked on for $20 off your first purchase. It is a two for Truth Teller Friday. The man Bruce Warner is with us. I will no longer call you a myth. Right. You are your real and your spectacular. You're alive. It's still alive. That's right. Despite what some of these people may be saying about me. I always say don't feed the trolls, but I will feed into the availability report version 2.0, which came out last night and Bruce, there are no changes. And I guess there's two ways to look at the no-change factors. Some can say hey, it's too bad. Xavier Lucas and Ezekiel Marcelin were not upgraded from questionable to probable that didn't happen. They're still both questionable, but also Bruce, they're still both questionable. Neither of them were downgraded to doubtful. So statistically, when you're listed as questionable on a college football injury report, it gives

you about a 50% to 70% chance to play. I wonder if we really have odds that good on Xavier Lucas or Ezekiel Marcelin, because I tell you, Bruce, it'd be great to get one or both of them back on Miami's D this week. Yeah. And the only thing that I think of when I see this list is that Mario is too damn conservative to put these two guys on as questionable as opposed to out because he knows, and I don't look, he said guys are coming back in the past and they didn't for weeks, they didn't. You know, you would think, oh, they're coming up tomorrow. Then the three weeks later, they're finally getting on the field. So when I see this, we all know that these two guys aren't as hurt as they had been. We didn't know from Lucas, because Lucas has been out since the beginning. Marcelin just got hurt recently. I don't know the extent of his injuries, but I'd like to think they're going to play.

So I think if they don't play, that's going to significantly hurt our chances. Not really. The other guys are doing pretty darn good. I'm not so much worried about who's going to play as the effort we had. We've been somewhat inconsistent still. This is clearly the best team we're going to play. We've played so far. It's there. It's at night. It's going to be loud. And Davos giving, you know, he's going to throw everything out there to beat us. So it's a challenge in a variety of ways. What I said to you two minutes ago off the air is, I want to see us play like we played in the four last games of the season and in the playoffs. I want to see us play with a chip with anger, with violence, all the phrase words that Mario uses and Heather min uses. I want to see that. And offensively, don't take your foot off the gas. We have a chance to knock Davos out. And in the evening tomorrow. We have a shot of knocking out in Florida State, Norville, so you know what?

Let's just put our foot on the gas and don't let up. We have enough weapons. I mean, look, you've got all these guys that are out. Josh Moore, boy, does that hurt? Marty. Yeah, yeah, Marty. So it hasn't stopped us. No. A lot of things that stop us seem to be our attitude. And the coach is added to it. I don't want to ever see. We were up what 31 to 7 against Wake and we've got a safety in the second half. That's all we got. Well, I think we scored a touchdown first drive of the third quarter and then after that it was just the safety. Right. Well, whatever it was, it's just, you know me, I don't care. I don't know if we're going to catch up from that, but people don't understand. When I say I don't care, it's not that I don't care. But I don't care. I don't care about Austin P playing this school. I don't care about those teams anymore.

I am strictly focused on the games and I'll watch big games. But I'm not going to sit here and watch every single game and say, I don't care because I'm not a gambler. Gamblers care because they have money on all these games. That is a good reason to care. Are you guys to sit there and make comments? Bruce doesn't care. You understand why it's not about me. I mean, I care. But I don't care. So, you know, I just, I'm not going to keep explaining. I don't care. I really do. Well, here's, so what for the audio listeners, Xavier Lucas starting corner is questionable. Linebacker, Zika Marceller, who's playing really well before he got injured in the wake forest game, he's questionable. The players who were out, I guess the only new addition to the out list this week was Owen Ruskiewicz, locking tight end, tight end Luca Gilbert out for the season. OJ Fredereq will still be out hoping to get the starting corner back before the end of the season. Corner, Jabori Antoine is out this week and Marty Brown and Josh Moore are both out for

the season. And Bruce, something, Christopher has emphasized a lot this week when he's been complimenting Clemson. How well they've played in the second half over their last three games. You know, they got their tails beaten by LSU, the first game of the season. Since then, they beaten George Southerne, they beat North Carolina and they beat Cal on the road. And they haven't given up a touchdown in the second half of any of those games. Christopher said they've outscored those last three teams, 42 to six in the second half. And I believe Bruce, a big reason why Mario has emphasized Clemson's second half so much is. And three out of Miami's four games so far, Miami starters have played one drive into the third quarter and then taken a seat. And then the only game where they didn't was the wake forest game and the second half was not nearly as successful as the first half. So I think that's Cal, my humble opinion is Mario is emphasizing how good Clemson has

been in the second half to make sure everybody on the Miami side realizes Miami has to have their most meaningful second half of the season this week or maybe they won't if it's an absolute blowout, but maybe they will. That was going to be my point. Clemson is playing so well in the second half, but not so well in the first half. How does that bowed for us? We should blow them out. So the second half is relatively meaningless even against Clemson. So there's two ways to look at that. I listen, if we're worried about Clemson in the second half, that means it's a close game. I don't want to see that. Right. Right. You see my point. I don't want to get like them. And I think Mario is just, he's saying what he has to say. He's got to get his team's attention. Right. But if we're blowing them out again, you know, if it's 28 to 3 and at the end of half, they're not coming back to me. That's not what they're offense. So on my nervous, yeah, I'm always nervous every game. I'm nervous. I played Piper High School. I just don't like Lucy, you know.

But I think we're going to beat them. I think we're going to beat them by 20 points. They're not that good. They're dangerous when they play those crummy teams. We played crummy teams and we killed them. And Wake Forest is not a crummy team because they have to be lovable on the road. On the road, no less. So that was a huge win. Yeah, the coach has a big mouth and he's ignorant because if he thinks that they were more physical than us, would 44 pressures that we had? Yeah, I watched that yesterday and I'm like, I'm not going to allow anyone to make me angry today. But I, you know what, I felt, I felt betrayed by Jake Dickert because I was really starting to like and respect the Wake Forest head coach. But I didn't know the guy was a pathological liar. He's on, he's on with David Pollock on David's podcast, Sebalg Get Ball and David asked him, like, your takeaways on Miami with the question being framed that, hey, Miami's this elite team. What were your takeaways?

He's like, well, I left the game feeling that we were the more physical team, he said. And Bruce, you brought up 44 pressures Miami had. Miami had more sacks in the game than Wake did. And this to me, I'm not going to lose any yards talking about physical. Yeah, exactly those bows. 22 Miami had 158 rushing yards. Wake Forest had 22 and there was one play where Mark Fletcher ran over four defenders. I'm the same play from the more physical team, allegedly. But then you're getting me worked up again. I want to get into with the truth teller when we come back. Players who we think offer unique mismatches in this matchup against Clemson, guys who really must step up for Miami to come away with a win and hopefully a comfortable win. You want to keep it locked right here on this to for Truth Teller Friday. We're only getting started on Lockdown Cains. Oh, we're only getting started with Fan Duel.

Your first listen here on a two for true teller Friday on a game day eve with Miami set to take on Clemson tomorrow. I'm going to offer up the first player who must step up and I'm there are some very obvious choices on my list. So I'm going to start with you know the guys who aren't completing 88.7% of their passes and give you something a little unique first. But Bruce, I think this is a game where number zero on defense Omar Thornton can absolutely shine with his. I refer to them as violent blitzes from the outside. You talk about rattling a freshman quarterback. You see number zero coming after you down after down after down. I think Omar Thornton can play a starring role defensively going up against Tate Reynolds and company. Well, him and everybody else because you asked me this question and I said everybody has to step up the entire team. And you pick anyone individual it doesn't matter. I've seen look we saw Thornton get burned the last couple of games.

He comes in and they spot him. He's leaning. You know he's coming. So you change the play you throw it over the top. But listen everybody says this kid can't throw that well. I've seen highlights and making some great throws. You can't you can't underestimate a lot of these guys. Look at the Stanford quarterback. I thought he was great. Yeah. I thought he was great. He had a he had an rocket for an arm. But you know they didn't score a lot of points, but still. The step ups. I know that's a topic you like. I just don't have an answer for you. I'm not pumpkin out. I just think everybody's got to step up everybody. Everybody. I mean, people that are having really done much need to step up. I think Wilson started to step up last week. He has. He was like unnoticeable the first couple of games. And that was definitely not roughing the past around with care. And anybody says that was not that was a bad call. Hasn't that happened in two straight games?

Yes. Like I mean, I feel so bad for him because he he played his previous three years in the SEC with competent referees for the most part. There's I know I'm going to get some comments. Don't know the SEC reps. If you compare them to the ACC reps, they're competent. And they let you play a little bit in the SEC, the ACC. You breathe on somebody the wrong way. You get a flat. So I feel so bad for Wilson going from referees that actually let you sack people to this. Yeah. I thought listen, I just thought that was like the perfect sack. I don't know. I can't really see anything in there. It was roughing the pan. He didn't slam the guys head to the ground. No. He had him. He had him. And he tackled on how about she supposed to tackle him. You're supposed to like in mid mid tackle. Like you say that neo guy. The stop. And hold them up. I mean, that was just a bad call. But the problem is this keeps happening. And work there more false starts again this past week.

Yeah. That we need to cut him out. Yeah. And the players were talking about that. They were talking about after the play stupid plays. They did that a few times. They got to they can't let clams and stay in this game. We've seen over the last 10, 15 years. Dabo and his Clemson squad. They don't play great, but they pull it out. There's something about them. We cannot let them be in this game in the fourth quarter. You know, and I don't again, I'm going to say I don't care. I don't care about point spreads. What is it 16 and a half? Yeah. It was 17 and a half for a couple of days now with 16 and a half. Yeah. Yeah. So. If we beat them 37 to 20, we beat the spread, right? Yeah. Okay. So, but again, it doesn't matter to me as long as we win this game. But I'm not when I say it doesn't matter. I don't want to win by one. I'm sorry. I want to kick the ass and go home. That's what I want on my list of players who must step up. Yeah, I've got the entire offensive line. Bruce because this is going to be probably the toughest test they face so far.

You know, will help on that opposing defensive line for Clemson's a future NFL player. I know every Miami fan is clamoring for King Kongden. We want to see more Ben Kongden in this game who had his really is coming out party against central Michigan. That was central Michigan. This is Clemson. I think a lot can translate from that because when you go over the film of Kongden, it wasn't just him like bullying lesser athletic guys, his techniques and his field vision were on point. So I think it can translate into a tougher defensive line. What is that word is help line up over who? Which of our offensive lineman he lines up over the left tackle. So he'll be primarily going up against Samson. I'll thank my chances with that. Okay. Yeah. Yeah. And Fletcher didn't play last week. So he should be real. He should be really strong and ready to go. Yeah. And you know, if it's a sloppy field, a guy like that who's just a pounder as opposed to a shifty little back who could slip and slide, Fletcher, once he gets ahead of steam, look out.

Yeah. I think I think the only reason. Look, the teams they played Clemson, they didn't score a lot of points against. They other teams didn't score much on them because they're terrible. But Clemson didn't blow anybody out for, you know, they had a, you keep saying the second half. Well, if they're struggling against those teams in the second half, good luck against us. Especially if we put our foot in the middle of the game. And we don't stop in the second half. That would be nice. Yeah. They're not a team that's built to play from behind from a scoring standpoint. Like they, they want to play with a lead. They want to run downhill with Gideon Davidson. They want to take Reynolds to be able to run. They want to shorten the game. Take possessions away from Miami by controlling the clock. So you go up a couple scores against that team. It's, it's big trouble because they're. They're not going to be able to play with the lead. They're not going to run downhill with Gideon Davidson. And that's a big problem. That's a big problem. But the team, it's, it's big trouble because their, their offense with a true freshman quarterback is not built for that.

They, they came back against North Carolina who said that's another ACC. That's a great one. But they did come back against them. They did, they did come back. And that was another thing. So that, that was right, right after a really long lightning delay. Right. Like the momentum come lightly flipped, which is a thing that can happen, right? It can happen in your favor. It can happen against you. against you. So I know you and I, we've been monitoring the weather and a bunch of people and thank you, by the way. I love when the everydayers help us out. A bunch of people are setting me a video of a weather man specifically talking about that game in the forecast, like an actual meteorologist, right? A little more credentialed than me and Bruce. And he was saying the forecast like keeps looking better that it's not good. It might still rain some, but it's not looking looking nearly as bad. So Bruce, I don't care if it rains. I just, I don't want to have a two hour lightning delay because you never know what that can do with the momentum of the game. Maybe Alex doesn't care about something. Let's see a comment on him. I don't know. So what about the other 16, 17,000 weather people in

the area? Because you said one guy. One of those things, you know, nine out of 10 dentists agree that Colgate toothpaste will get rid of all your cavities. I'm sure there's a consensus in the weather community on this one. But I want to get to, I want to get to our game picks when we come back. How we think this one's going to play out. You know, the quarterback matchup. I love it for Miami. I love a lot of the matchups for Miami, but there are, there are some areas where Davos Sweeney is going to try to create advantages. You want to keep it locked right here because we're not done yet on this brand new episode of Lockdown Canes. It's further evidence that everything happens for a resist. Thank you for making locked on canes. Your first lesson, so Bruce Mario has talked a lot this week about something you mentioned. They got to cut the penalties down like he has noted that as a place of improvement that improvement is needed for Miami. Because 13 penalties, you can get away with that against central Michigan. I don't know if you can get away with that on the road at Clemson. So some of it's unavoidable. unavoidable. If the referees are going to make crappy calls that don't exist, that's going to happen. But the pre-snap stuff is avoidable. Post-snap composure, that is avoidable. So we want to see Miami keep it.

I would say seven penalties are fewer in this game. Yeah, seven penalties are fewer. Yeah. The way I see this game, the way I see all the games we've played so far, not so much Florida A&M in the last weeks gaming in central Michigan, but getting out to a fast start. Because last year we were inconsistent constantly. From game to game, you know, look how we've played against Louisville, we lost, we were down 14, nothing. It seemed like in 10 seconds. SMU, we stunked the entire 60 minutes. We had good starts against Florida and Florida State, but we didn't maintain it. So I want to see us come out early like we've been doing and just scoring, getting in the end zone, scoring, mixing it up. And I think they got some loft and looks good now. It's not like, well, he had one catch and then he had four. He seems to be in the offense. He's part of the plan now, which is very important. Because he gets single coverage every single time.

And then we've seen Wingo step up. We've definitely seen Jacob step up. So not having Josh now turns out to be not as bad because everybody else is contributing. And of course, you know, Davo, is he going to blitz us? He's going to try to change up the rhythm for Mensa because he just seems to be in a zone where he just drops back. I'll get a little look here for 10 seconds. So we'll look over here for 15 seconds and throws the ball. They're just driving down the field. They got to do something to him. I would think they're going to try to pressure him. And let's see what we do. Let's see what the adjustments that are made and go from there. Yeah. I mean, Darian Mensa has been almost perfect to this point. 14 touchdowns, zero interceptions, 12 incompletions to 14 touchdowns, which has never been done before or hadn't been done it over 30 years. I should say four games into a season. And I would expect Clemson will probably take the approach of maybe a little bit more attention

to Malachytoni versus completely loading the box, which was the approach that Stanford took. And it, you know, Tony just went crazy. You know, Clemson does have some good corners, but something else Bruce is, their top corner, Ashton Hampton, he doesn't follow the best receiver. He plays his position. And so wherever, you know, Tony is going to line up three or four different places on the field. So he'll be going up against whatever corner. He's going up against. It's not going to be Ashton Hampton following him. So we're going to see Tony have his opportunity to eat against several different corners. But Barcaps knows Slouch. So he could walk a good lock, you know, he's the most loved. And the other guys are going to be slouch. And again, you're talking about Lofton. He's playing really good. And he's playing physical. So I, and I also know Clemson's history. They're going to mix it up. They've always had a relatively defensive coordinator. They're going to mix the coverages up. They're going to try to confuse.

Mensa, I get all that. They're not going to stay in the same defense all the time. But it's how we come out. And it's what our attitude is. We can't let them score. We can't let them get into game early. Just go out there and punch them in the mouth. Right. That seems to be successful for us, you know. Not every, we could come back. We could be down 10, nothing can come back and win my 30. But I don't want to see it. I want us to go out there and just punch Clemson in the mouth. So with all that said, what's your prediction? Final score for Saturday. 38. I said 17. I think you got me convinced to make it 38. 13. So I would say 13, but I'm leaning towards 17. 16 or 17. Okay. I don't know what the difference will say 38 16. What's 16? We'll say 38 16 then. Okay. That's a good compromise. I don't know for going to score 40. This is a pretty good team. They're well respected. I hear the defense. The offense isn't so great.

The defense is pretty good. But who knows, a pick six turns it around from 38 to 40. Something. That's all we need. Because I still think we're going to score at least four or five. Thugs down. I don't know how they say. I don't know anybody stops us. Yeah. I'm going 35 to 13. That's that's what I'm going to settle on. I know that's no field goals. We don't get any field goals in that game. Yeah, he's going to get one field goal. That's why I said 38. Well, you know what? Maybe I'll go up to 38. I'm going to stick with 35. I'm going to stick with that. I think I think we get five touchdowns. And I do think one of those could be a defensive touchdown. By the way, Bruce, I think you're on to something with that. And I don't think I think Clemson will score one first half touchdown. And then Corey Heatherman is the best in the business when it comes to making adjustments. And it's like it's not even half time adjustments. It's like adjustments after one drive. Like, well, we'll see what you do in that first drive. And then we'll smother you after that.

That's what he said. He said something about it's not half time. It could be first goal adjustments. Right. He just said, I don't like what they're doing. So let's do this. By the way, you talk about who's going to step up. We saw Scrogg and step up last week. He looked pretty good. Yes. So there's guys out there don't we don't even know that are in the two deep. Well, he's probably in the two deep, but that are making great plays. And Marshall and Winston, the other one, he looks like violent hitter. He's exactly what I like. He is nasty. So I hope he comes back. Lucas, I want him back too, but not at the expense of re-injuring something in that bad weather. Yeah. So the weather to be a factor, whether he plays or not. Yeah. Whether he plays will come down to the weather. What do you think if he's questionable at the very least he could suit up? Yeah, I think he'll go through warm ups. And then I think it could be one of those things because sometimes people look at this like all or nothing like, okay, if he returns,

he's going to play 50 snaps. I could see that if Lucas plays, he might play like five or six snaps this week and then to kind of get his sea legs and then before the by-week and then he's full-go for Florida State. So it's one of those things where even if he does play, it may not be like, oh my god, he's back and he's covering TJ Moore every down. Like, I think he could kind of get ease back into this. He could also be involved if it's passing down, says the six DB who knows. But I wouldn't be surprised if he plays. And the same thing with Marcelin because again, I don't think Mario puts these guys unquestionable as if he knows they're not going to play. He always puts them out. He takes the real concern. They're not playing. Yeah. Unless. That gives me watching. Yeah. Well, we'll be watching injury report 3.0 comes out, I think tonight. So we'll see if they get down graded because that's the caveat. We'll have to, but you're right, David, the questionable, the first two days

when version number three comes out, we shall see. Right. We shall see. There was another day of practice yesterday. And then today is nothing. It's just on their way or I think they're already there. I saw they're on a plane this morning. Yeah, I think, but I saw the equipment leave yesterday. Oh, okay. So yeah, I think I think Don Bailey Jr. called into the Joe Rose show from the plane this morning. I think if I see it really, okay. Yeah, yeah, yeah. Yeah. So all right. I'm predicting. We win. I don't want any I and J's. I just want health. I want good health. And I'd like to see some good weather. It doesn't have. I don't care if it's cloudy. Yeah. No one is seeing it. About the rain. You know, if it pours, it doesn't mean it's a lightning strike. You know that they could sit out there. Right. A marble pouring weather. And still have to play. They could keep playing. That's right. It'd be an equalizer. That's for sure. Yeah. Well, I'm looking forward to seeing everything. And no, no matter I will not be at this game.

So I will stay dry, no matter what. And huge shout out to the truth teller. Huge shout out to the every day. Or is everybody enjoy your Friday? By the way, later today, tonight, I'm going to have a crossover episode with Morgan Thomas from Lockdown Clemson. So I want to dig a little bit more into this matchup with my counterpart from up there in South Carolina. We'll talk to everybody next time. Why would you do that? Just get on the phone. Get on the thing with him and say, look, you want to have a chance. Goodbye. And I'm hanging up on a guy. You know, I was on the ACC squad with him yesterday. And he's pretty realistic about their chances. So I don't think I'm going to have to talk him into too much. Like, obviously, you know, he's going to look for the possible paths to victory for Clemson. But I think he knows how this one may go. So we'll talk to everybody next time on another episode of Lockdown Cains. We are part of the number one sports podcast network. We're celebrating 10 years of the Lockdown podcast network.
