I am of course, Chrissy Lenz, the director and a performer at the neighborhood comedy theater in downtown Mesa, Arizona. And I, of course, am Nate McWorther, a performer and teacher. And yeah, that's all I do with performance teach. At the neighborhood comedy theater in downtown Mesa, Arizona. You're also a leader. You're on the lead. Yeah, wow, that feels presumptuous. I'm used to doing your intro. So I almost was going to be like proprietor and doer of things. I was like, nope. Yeah, just just prefer a teacher. And we changed up. Yeah, you changed up. Yeah, yeah. Chrissy, I am delighted to be here this evening with you to discuss

5:07my episode. Your episode, which I have just watched and played along with. So I'm 33 drinks in. Yeah, same here actually. We're doing this vintage style. We do it right before we record. Right before. Just heads up. Sophie may be joining us any second now if she hasn't already, because I heard it from the other room. She's sontered in like the bull shark of a cat. She is there she is. There's Sophie. Yes, the unofficial third host of Gang Bad Drink. She always has opinions. And I don't know how she feels about this episode. Probably she's probably a big cane fan. I imagine. She loves a little chaos. Oh, yeah. Yeah, she will sit on Abby's chest and put her claws right upon her neck while she sleeps.

6:11And if that's not cane energy, I don't know what it is. Have you checked her right arm for a little mark. She might have one. She might have a little tough to fur. It's like a market cane. Yes, you demon cat who interrupts the pod all the time. Chris, I'm excited. This is of course your episode. Yes, yes. This is season nine episode 11 first bow in. It is a classic. It is a very memorable in very many ways. So many ways it introduces. Very many ways. Yes. There's a lot going on. What is going to be an arc of the rest of season nine, which is the mark and of cane this episode aired on January 21st, 2014. Chrissy, I was living in Atlanta at the time and not watching Superhero.

7:15Probably. So, yeah. Written by Robbie Thompson and directed by John Baton. And yeah, it has international titles. Oh, great. What are they? I didn't look them up. Okay. Hungarian and German are both the first blade and then Portuguese and Italian just went with firstborn. So not many variations. Oh, that's a bar. The first blade and it's, you know, that's fine. I like firstborn. I think I think firstborn is perfect. Yeah, it's great. Yeah, I like it. The first blade. It's whatever, but it's obviously on the nose because this is obviously the episode where we get introduced to cane and we get introduced in the whole storyline that will end up being the mark in the blade and all of it because we are trying to have it on. We're early on in living in the bunker.

8:16We don't even really super know a whole lot about the mental letters at this point. Like it's super fun. We're right in prime Crowley time to like crime. Crime Crowley. It's where Crowley is like friend and foe at the same time. We're like learning that like there's the great even moment in this where he's in this episode where he says, I've been inside your brother. You know, we're practically family is like we are the furthest thing from family. But I'm like, yeah, but you end up being family. Like Crowley is part of the family at a certain point. Yeah, I'm Crowley to one of those like really unique characters who's just like out to serve himself. So if he needs to make friends with the Winchester's he makes friends with the Winchester's he means make enemies of the Winchester's Winchester's are his enemies like he's just always he's chaotic evil. And he will just do what's right for him.

9:16But it's what's perfect. It's it's as opposed is the he's the other side of the cast coin which is chaotic good. Right. As always chaotic and we see that in this episode as well where cast like just is blinded by ambition all of the time. But like his ambition sucks all of the time. Like it's so and even he's like and like he has this great. Okay, we'll get into it. That's what that was my notes. Chrissy here are the rules for tonight's drinking game. Those are the rules for the last episode. The other side of this notebook has the rules for this episode which are if we see the journal take a drink. It might as well be your shot actually. Yeah, yeah. Yeah, I love the journal. I love the journal and season nine, you know, later seasons we don't get the journal as much. It's great to see you. I love about the journal and we get to talk about it when we get there but like he just knows what page to flip to like what?

10:21This I want to yes, we'll talk about there's so many of those moments in the beginning of this episode where they find everything they need immediately. Or like I guess we could just assume maybe they've been looking for a while and we get shown when they find it but like anyway. Alright, the journal take a drink take a drink from we get some demon eyes which I definitely definitely undercounted but I'm going to add at least one in there because I know I missed a. Pop culture reference take a drink which was more fun than I thought it was going to be to be honest. When we see a devil's trap take a drink take a drink anytime we see the big needle. The big needle. Big needle. I'm taking a drink for a montage though I'm not going to lie I don't really know why. I mean the show is fun.

11:21Alright take a drink for you some broken furniture. Classic roll take a drink every time a demon gets stabbed. And then take a drink whenever we see the mark. The mark the creek. Anytime that song anytime I don't want to wait comes on in the store I just yell the creek. Alright I don't want to wait. Are you ready to get into season 9 episode 11 first born. I'm so ready this is a great episode tell it to me Nate. Here we go then. Are there is mostly just kind of recapping what's been going on with Sam in like the last season how like there was an angel inside of him that Dean let me inside of him to heal him from the trials that he partially.

12:37But didn't fully go through but. Okay the angel lied about who he was and he was a different angel and that's how we really need to super know for the purposes of our episode. Sam also feels bad about Kevin and killing Kevin and the end of season eight is like a whole just like. Shit show of messiness and metatron and everything yeah if you watch the show yeah no and if you haven't watched the show and you're listening to this episode. There's no way I can explain it to you in any interesting way just go watch it yeah and then and then also the end is just talking about Abaddon so kind of set everything up for the back. She's doing her episode yes I would say now because this is normally where it says now that it's not now go to Jasper Springs Mississippi in 1863.

13:42At a time to be in Jasper Springs Mississippi. And there's basically a bunch of like dudes that are like don't let he's here. Don't let him get the knife and then yeah then we see Timothy Amason and he's like I'm here and I'm gonna smite this shit out of you. And that's what he does. Yeah, which one we did an episode where there was like pink goo that got sprayed all over when the pink mist with the angel that was the one where cast was human having. Yeah, the like annihilator angel. Mm hmm. A good. Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, so it seemed a little bit like that but like it's more like a glowing red anyway. We get some demon eyes in that by the way we get so take a drink for some demon eyes because it's revealed that they're demons and then cane.

14:51Smites them. Okay, Dean and Crowley are in a bar or Dean is in a bar grand old time. Crowley has his like some very fun lines about she's trouble with the capital ZD. Yeah, they're they're this is where we get the you know like Crowley informs Dean that there is something that can kill Abaddon and that is the first blade. We're setting up what our quest is going to be for this episode. I'm going to drink as Crowley says I do love a buddy comedy and that's a pop I just say that's a pop culture reference. I counted like two because he makes other references to buddy comedy is throughout that little speech. All right, so we have a cast and Sam are back or castes at the bunker and he's eating a peanut butter and jelly sandwiches.

15:54It tastes like molecules he says it just tastes like molecules and when Sam comes in he's like I used to enjoy or like when I was a human I had to eat all the time. It's very annoying. Sam was like yeah it's a lot of things we got to do as humans and he's like it's you know you just taste the the molecules not the some of the parts. So Cass is feeling this like on we about not being human anymore but he's like forget that I need to heal you Sam and he starts to you know heal him which presumably he's already been doing it's very weird. I think it's a weird moment yeah it's a very weird moment. So he starts he starts to like just heal him sitting there like you just like say I've just got home is like okay we're into it and he's like oh there's some angel. Grace inside of you like still resonating and.

17:01He's like oh we could you possibly use maybe could you left that grace behind me could possibly use it to track him once again cast him. Blinded by ambition and just like whatever mission is in his brain at that time. And it's just like I don't even care I don't care if it hurts you like I know it's probably gonna hurt like all right but he will get into that because that's they do research later doing research would have been a fun rule for this game. Yeah it would have been a good role. Um but I didn't a lot of research done like I okay so the grace resides at the base of your neck you can just get it out with a needle. I mean earlier they were screwing screws into like Alfie's head to tune into angel radio so. I it seems all be cerebral in some way okay but yeah why did he have to like.

18:03Did why did he have to jam it so far into his poor little neck. I don't know. Yeah. I didn't like it. We saw John's journal in the bar by the way take a drink for that. So Dean and Crowley make a journey to John's locker. Yeah. Some locker where the you know like in the journal they found a clue that led to a locker that of course Dean knew where it was once again Dean finds. The information immediately that they just flip like knows what's seen what page to flip to and it's like no. Yeah. That's going to take you hours. So when Sam and cast up if what the what the resonance of the grace might be or whatever inside a Sam they find immediately in the men of like the men of letters must be the greatest at categorizing their indexing their stuff to be able to be found.

19:15Right. Right. Exactly. And so it is like this because they find it immediately but then not only do they find that immediately like we even we don't even cut between scenes to make a scene like time is passed when cast then like goes from like one book to another and is like oh and here's this other crucial piece of information we need. It's just very yeah I don't know. And then yes of course like findings everything they need in John's journal and John's locker within seconds within seconds they're just like oh there it is. Yes. So this is what I oh yeah we get a devil's trap in this we see a devil's trap Crowley has to avoid in John's locker so take a drink.

20:16Dean yeah finds the perfect amount of whatever they need is Tara this was the tea in John's journal and that's the person that he hunted a demon with who then mentioned the first blade and Crowley says you didn't always says like didn't they teach you this at hunters Hogwarts. Yeah, hunters Hogwarts. I love that line. Take a drink for a pop culture reference. Yes, so we are talking about cast and Sam finding just what they need in the library and of course cast wants to extract the grace so we have yes I love the line. Sam's like oh well the men of letters never had a guinea pig we have a guinea pig. He's so willing to sacrifice himself at all times he's just like yeah suck the grace out of me what could be the worst. Oh yeah I definitely wrote down what was Sam ever the martyr.

21:21That's his that's his jam like he loves he loves it. So I do want to talk about it because yeah he loves it but does he love it because that's the example that is set for him by Dean. And by John. Right yeah I feel like Sam of all the Winchester's should be the one who doesn't feel that way and has the better perspective on things and like really shouldn't be doing these things because he's a he's not above it but he's. A move beyond that way of thinking but it is like it's like this is the Winchester trap that holds has always held Sam in is this just influence even subliminally of his dad of his brother and his dad. Right yeah exactly.

22:23Yeah I was just like this is such an interesting episode and especially with an episode that deals with brothers abstractly right right right yeah no it's. It's directly. But like it's not the two it's not a well you know there's no BM scene between Sam and Dean in this episode there's no like no interaction between them yeah right then no interaction at all so like because like Dean's got off on his own whatever that was explained sort of into that was referenced in the then. It is just kind of interesting yeah especially when the you know now deans out there doing on a hunt with Crowley and Sam's left back of the bunker with Cass. So it was like who are your brothers really then you have the the spirited connection can ship felt between Kane and Dean later on like is very the brother themes in this are are very interesting and just like how.

23:33Yeah I don't know. So Dean and Crowley go see go find Tara Tara who's knee always hurts anytime a demon is around we could. It hurts and it like snaps and half it's like more than just like I've got a twin just like blue my knee snapped in half. Yeah it's not like it's not like people who's knees hurt when it rains it's more like oh I just tore my ACL because the demon was just broke my patella because this demon came in through the door so. We got but it's a great scene I like the scene I like how she interplays with Dean and you do my dad and oh she's like yeah I banged your dad sideways. Yeah she's like I do the same to you because you're so much sex here yeah she but she knows that one of them or Crowley as a demon she like then douse his Dean with holy water he's not a demon like I'm just working with this guy.

24:48Disasshole because we both want Abadon to retry to take out a night of hell you have any they need knowledge about the first blade. Oh just so happens in my closet here I have all but one of the ingredients for a. For location spell all I need is essence of cracking essence of cracking I have a warehouse of essence of cracking in Belize all you gotta do is break this devil she shoots the trap. Reluctantly and Crowley disappears and I was like don't shoot it like erase it and then redraw it immediately would have saved her life. Really would have really would have yeah it's true stupid decision Rachel Howard Hayward plays Tara by the way. Yeah rest in peace Tara we hardly knew you before your skin was torn off off screen.

25:52Alright so they do the location spell it's in Missouri the blade is a Missouri cut to Crowley and Dean driving up to some house real Missouri there's a beekeeper and Crowley starts shit thing bricks. He's like oh shit though it's like kind of revealed the end that currently kind of do this what can I have yeah Crowley was definitely playing Dean. Yeah but he was definitely doing the part about the whole thing and playing it brilliantly so we got a school we gotta get out of here it's cuck cuck cuck cuck can and can of course like pulls the the okey dock on him and his behind and it's like no no no you're not going anywhere. I love the cans of beekeeper yeah I like that too they're really remarkable creatures just Tim the Amazon so good and he's so him and it's so perfect and like this performance is so dynamic it's subtle and it's like not over the top it's just absolutely like it's got to be one of the best.

27:10Guest runs on this show. Ever but specifically this episode I love so much I agree and it only does a couple more. Yeah yeah he just pops in here and there but he's so good yeah alright. To to to do we have this incredible conversation with Kane all about how he's retired he shuts Crowley up and the things like you guys showing me how to do that. 30:36cane raised and killed the nights of hell he's the one who created them but he's also the one who destroyed them and cuz Dean is just like I I want the blade I want the blade give me the blade um give me the blade she's like no get out yeah give me the blade just give me the blade please um back the bunker Sam or just do for big needle cuz it's just out like every time we have cast the Sam now um for a minute and and he's like Sam is like no more you gotta do it and gas is like um I'm having second thoughts about the thing that was definitely my fucking idea I this never would have been a thing if I just kept my fucking mouth shut now I feel bad about it cast the uh and I I make decisions and immediately regret them that's my thing he learns lessons Nate he learns as he goes he's like a child

31:46but I don't think he does learn he's like a dog he just keeps doing the dumb thing over and over again castes once again blinded by his own ambition uh going after Dean and or not going after Dean going after trying to get this grace out of Sam and he's like just instantly forgotten what it is to be human and it just wants to get good real to get revenge cuz that's all cast ever knows is like I don't agree with you I completely don't agree with you I think he's reluctantly making and Sam is the one who's pushing Sam is pushing it again it's cast it castes the one who brings it up like doesn't need to even have brought it up I think it becomes reluctant later on when he realizes the pain Sam is in

32:48but I think at first he's like yeah this makes sense mission is destroy get real this is part of mission and like I think if like he had just not even said anything to say I'm about the possibility of being able to track get real none of this would have ever happened I don't know that's the way I read it I read it as cast like obviously Sam is the one who's like no keep going keep doing it like once they get started but it never get started without cast even just like offhandedly mentioning the possibility of being able to track get real with this grace and then he and then he witnesses he's like reaping what he's sewing and he's like oh I don't like this so much I'm gonna back out okay that's not how I took it that's fine I mean I can see like yes like Sam is obviously being a martyr and he's pushing it and he's like no because I got to I got to balance the books right I got all these all these cosmic debts I got to pay

34:03because I'm a windchester and I got to feel bad about myself the decisions I've made in life right so we talked about Dean and Crowley snooping and finding that Kane had a wife right we talked about that we talked about that yeah no yeah okay so they snoop they find a picture oh this is this must be his wife and then Kane gets back from his grocery trip and is like what I told you guys to leave you really dumb dumb dumb dum dummies and then oh look the demons are here and he's like you guys now I got to move you know what the real estate market is like right now he's pissed he's pissed Dean is like this is the magic that's keeping us in keep them out and he's like yeah for now and he's like but I'm gonna go shut some corn see ya I want to go

35:11yes he's very concerned with his corn he's very into his corn so we got the demon gang outside and they're like oh we don't care about you Kane we just want their so-called king of hell and Dean Winchester we think bag of those make real nice for my master he's like master he's like Abadon says Crowley yeah cut back to the bunker more big needles more big needles I was very uncomfortable with the whole thing so big so many big needle it's not it's a yeah yeah um Kane's just gonna shut corn while he watches Dean stab three demons three demons for Dean one for Crowley and the great little fight scene in the house with a couple broken furniture as well so this is so much broken furniture heavy

36:13there is broken furniture left right and sideways heavy drinkage in this this section of the episode sure yes so great fight scene which ends with Dean stabbing this demon on the table right in front of Kane and looks him in the eye and he flops the demon onto the ground and he's like what is this so kind of testing he's like I know I felt connected to you right from the very beginning whoo whoo oh man again talk about brother themes and he's like no you and I aren't the same you killed you brother he's like yeah and you didn't why right yeah and this is where we learned that according to Kane it was not God that was talking to able it was Lucifer and the only reason that Kane killed able was that he made a deal with Lucifer his soul in heaven for Kane soul

37:26and then that's how Kane becomes the first night of hell and the one who makes the nights of hell and leads them and does terrible atrocities for centuries until he meets Colette it's always a colette there's always a colette as long as it's not a co-set is that what have been lame is yeah so we learned that yeah no Kane Kane was a badass murder in night of hell until he met a nice lady who was like yeah I know what she are but like you could not be that and that'd be cool too and then he's like oh that sounds great and then he went and killed all the nights of hell except for apparently Abaddon who we then find in a not a montage I don't know why I wrote montage I guess more flashback than montage

38:33flashback yeah flashback and we get a flashback to Kane's backstory yes his beloved but they came for him and so he had to go out and kill them except then one took his wife and of course that's Abaddon and Abaddon's like breaking his wife from the inside and escapes just before Kane can stab oh no now he stabbed his wife and now his wife is dead this is why Kane is retired disappeared off the map as Crowley told us earlier yeah no it's just a great love the backstory love the whole like everything about it yeah it's great it's really good really makes you feel for Kane I like it I like the different take on the Kane and Abel story too of like you know he did it to protect his brother he did it like for like you could totally see Dean doing the same thing right like Dean or Sam doing the same thing like oh I don't think Sam would I think Dean would I don't think Sam would I don't think Sam could ever bring himself to stab his brother but Dean

39:41yeah yeah I don't know it is brother gets stabbed by a nail he just like moves on pretty quickly he does it's uh yeah it's it's this interesting like and now we're gonna watch again the connection between Dean and Kane so interesting Dean Kane also funny just now thought of that um yeah so to do to do we get a good cast and Sam BM seeing because cast is finally giving up on his mission to get as much grace as a same as possible because Sam is obviously not having a good time with it but we get some more big needle take a drink and he is and cast is basically like well I feel due and do all the graces out of you and this is all if with enough it's enough and if it's not it's not uh I guess what it's not um cut back to the what what Kane's place where we learn about the mark take a drink

40:47the mark uh the blade the first blade is useless if you don't have the mark the blade isn't here of course uh but the but what the blade draws his power from which is the mark that's what the the findings about whatever thing they did earlier um led you to was this not the actual blade itself but the mark of Kane on him we take a drink for that um that is that is actually where we learn all of Kane's kind of backstory with his wife and everything like that uh more demons are arriving now um and things are getting kind of catastrophic so what do we do we got to transfer the mark Kane transfers the mark to Dean Dean now bears it take a drink uh it's really gross to like the transfer is is gross there's a lot of gross stuff in this episode a lot of it had me cringing and grinding my teeth

41:51the big needle the demon his face is all shot off with a shotgun um yeah there's a bunch of gross stuff in this episode uh that's just the blade itself is gross obviously the blade itself is gross and when it goes into collette it's like disgusting made from a cow jawbone has the legend goes as the lore says uh there's more big needle as we try to do the spell to fight gadriel but of course it doesn't work um and cast knew this the whole time that it wasn't gonna work so he's just like well i'd rather uh have my friend sam around still then have found gadriel because i probably want to kill them getting enough grace right because he says the beginning like oh is it bad to have this grace he's like well it's not hurting right right it might be happening yeah um so we get this cast and sam uh boy mellow drama scene and which is then followed by a crowley and dean boy mellow drama scene

And we're about two rounds in. Not two rounds of drinks. Two rounds of trivia. Two, like, but not three or not to half time yet. So we're not at half time yet. We're about seven questions in. And I get up and go to the bathroom.

53:27And when I come out, Bobby is on the ground. No. What? He had passed the fuck out. He had completely gone unconscious and hit the ground. Oh, no. So I come running out and I roll him over and I'm like, oh my god, Bobby, Bobby, Bobby, wake up, wake up, wake up, wake up. He wakes up. He stays on the ground for a while. I finally get him into a chair. We get some water into him. Meanwhile, the bar has called the paramedics. Of course. As someone's passed out there, makes sense. Yep. So the fire truck comes. The EMT is come pouring out. They're attaching wires to him. They're shaving his chest. They're giving him an IV. They're like, what happened? I'm telling them everything. And they're like, well, his heart rate is 40. That's slow.

54:30That's alarmingly low. That's quite low. Yes. So they're like, we got to take him to the hospital. Okay. So I have Bobby give me his keys because he drove us there. And they go off to the hospital in an ambulance. And I follow behind in Bobby's car. I was so freaked out driving Bobby's car. Because I like, of course, don't know how it works. And he's a very tall guy. And I'm very small woman. And so the mirrors are all fucked up. And I'm like, adjusting everything. I'm like, trying to turn the headlights on. And I'm like, driving over to the hospital. Oh my God. I'm like, so freaked out. And there were all these guys behind me popping wheelies on motorcycles. And I was like, please. Not right now. Not tonight. The last thing I need is to get in a wreck in Bobby's car while I'm driving to the hospital.

55:33So we got there. And eventually we waited. So I got there and like Dorian, my husband, I texted him. And he was like, oh, be right there. So he came over. And we waited with Bobby until they said he was going to be discharged. And then I went home and Dorian waited for him. And about an hour later, he got to drive Bobby home in his car. And he took an Uber home. And Bobby's OK. They said it was dehydration. And that probably just like extreme dehydration and drinking one beer. Like just lit him up. Oh my god. Like a god damn Christmas tree. This Arizona heat is no joke. It's no joke. And he wasn't even out in the heat. He was like home all day. But he just didn't drink enough fucking water. So you need to drink water.

56:35Yeah, no, I'm on like third water bottle of the day. You need to hydrate. And you need to stay safe out there. That is crazy. I'm glad it's OK. I'm glad it was nothing serious. Yeah, I'm super glad it's OK. I'm super glad it was nothing serious. I was so worried. I was so scared. It was quite inexperienced. And then as soon as the ambulance left, they started trivia again. I was actually thinking trivia was going on in the background the whole time that this was happening. No, no, they held up to be the whole time the EMTs were there. Oh, I feel terrible. I would be like, no, no, no. Keep doing trivia. We need to win this thing, damn it. Yeah. And we were doing really well too. Bummer. Yeah. I forgot. Yeah, yeah. I should have come over. Well, I didn't even get done with my work meeting till 7.
