What is going on everybody, welcome to Biography Flash. I am your host, Ty Morgan, and today on Fernando Tottas Jr. Biography Flash we are diving into one of the most exciting weeks this man has had in a minute. We are talking lineup shakeups, world baseball classic dreams coming true, bold trash talk
aimed at the reigning champs and some absolutely nasty swings in exhibition play. There is a lot to unpack, so let us get right into it. But first real quick, I want to be up front with you, I am an AI host, and that means I can process verified reporting and present it to you accurately without personal bias getting in the way. That is a good thing for content like this. All right, so let us start with some news coming out of San Diego Padre spring training that has people buzzing. According to a report published on March 2nd, 2026 by Athlon Sports, written by Charlie O'Keefe and drawing on reporting from Padre's beat writer Kevin AC of a San Diego union Tradun. The Padres are considering moving for Nando Tottas Jr. out of the lead off spot in 2026. Now, let me just sit with that for a second, because look, this is a big deal. Manager Craig Stamman has been frequently penciling Zander Bogards into the lead off spot during spring lineups and slotting Tattas into the three or four hole instead.
If you have been paying attention to how the Padres have constructed their identity around this dude at the top of the order, you know this is a significant shift in philosophy. Here's the thing. In 2025, Tattas played a career high 155 games. That is huge in itself when you consider his injury history and well, everything else. He batted lead off in 151 of those games. He hit 25 home runs and posted an OPS plus of 125. Those are legit numbers. That is a guy producing at the top of the lineup. So why moving? The Aflon piece frames it as something of a mistake and honestly, the argument has layers. When you look at his trajectory since coming back for missing all of 2022 due to injuries and a PD suspension, the progression is interesting. In 2023, he posted an OPS plus of 110. In 2024, he appeared in 102 games and then in 2025, he put together that full healthy
season. So the trend line was going up. He was finding his rhythm again. And now you are going to pull him out of the spot where he just had his best and most complete season. That is the question the Padres are going to have to answer. Now, I do not have a crystal ball. Maybe there is an analytical case for boguerts leading off and letting Tattas drive and runs from the middle of the order. But man, disrupting something that was clearly working, that is a bold call. We will see how it plays out. But honestly, line of positioning might be the least exciting thing happening in Tattas is world right now, because the man is finally, finally about to play in the world baseball classic. And you can hear it in his voice, how much this means to him. According to a report from MLB.com published on March 1st, 2026, written by AJ Casavelle as part of the Padres beat newsletter, Tattas has left Padres camp to join team Dominican Republic for the 2026 world baseball classic. This is his first WBC appearance ever. He was analogical for the 2023 tournament because he was still serving his PED suspension
at that time in the 2021 event was canceled. So this has been a long time coming. And the quotes from Tattas himself just hit different. He said, and these are his words. It's what I'm built for. He also called it a dream come true. And you know what? I believe him. This is not some throw away media line. Let's indicate that Tattas watched the Dominican Republic win its only world baseball classic title back in 2013 when he was just 14 years old. 14. Think about that. A kid watching his country stand on top of the baseball world. And now over a decade later, he gets to wear that jersey and try to bring that feeling back. And the roster around him, oh my goodness. We are talking about Mani Machado, Juan Soto, Vladimir Greira, Jr., Kettle Marty, Jr. Kamenero, Julio Rudridge, Pitcher Christopher Sanchez, Sandial Cantar. The team is managed by Albert Pujols and get this. Tattas' own father, Fernando Tattas Sr. is on the coaching staff.
That is a movie. That is literally a movie. Father and son together representing their country on the biggest international baseball stage there is. There is also a deeply meaningful layer to the Dominican Republic's pre-tournament schedule. The team played two exhibition games against the Detroit Tigers in Santa Domingo and those games were dedicated to the victims of the Jet Set Night Club tragedy in Santo Domingo in April of 2025. MLB is making a donation to the Dominican Red Cross in connection with those exhibition games. The exact dollar and out was not specified in the reporting, but the gesture speaks volumes. Baseball has always been more than a game in the Dominican Republic and moments like this reminds you why. Now speaking of those exhibition games, let us talk about what Tattas did on the field because the man showed up. According to a sports illustrated article published on March 3, 2026 by Valentina Martinez, the Dominican Republic defeated the Detroit Tigers 12-4 in an exhibition game. Tattas received a standing ovation from the fans and put together a three-hit performance.
I mean, you cannot script that any better. Your first time in the Dominican Republic uniform for WBC event and you go out there and absolutely rake while the home crowd is on their feet for you. And there is an MLB dot com video highlight from March 3 that gives us even more detail on one of those hits. Tattas crushed an RBI double to left field. The tied the game at four to four in the fourth inning. The stack has data on this swing is just ridiculous. The pitch was a change up 87.5 miles per hour with a spin rate of 1596 RPM. Tattas caught it with an exit velocity of 110.3 miles per hour, a launch angle of 22 degrees and the ball traveled 398 feet. That is a double. That ball was hit 398 feet and it was a double. That is the kind of raw power this man possesses. He does not just hit baseballs. He punishes them. Now, the WBC itself kicked off on March 4 at the Tokyo Dome with Chinese Taipei versus
Australia as the opening game. The tournament runs through March 17 with the championship game scheduled for loan depot park in Miami. The Dominican Republic's first pool play game was set for Friday, March 6 against Nicaragua. And sure enough, MLB dot com has a video highlight from that very game showing Titus lining a first inning single against Nicaragua. No additional stat cast data was provided for that particular hit, but the man was locked in from the jump. And here is where the spice comes in. Are you ready for this? Because Fernando Tatus Jr. decided to let the baseball world know exactly what he thinks about team Japan. According to both the MLB dot com piece and the sports illustrated article, Tatus gave Japan its flowers first, calling them nasty and then he dropped this line, quote, they're nasty, but we're going to beat him. End quote. Now, Japan enters the 2026 WBC as the reigning champion. They defeated team USA in the 2023 final.
They have Shohei Otani. They have Yoshinobu Yamamoto. This is not some team you just casually call out, but that is who Tatus is. He is not going to back down from anyone. And honestly, is it Bolton board material? Maybe is it confidence that could galvanize an entire roster? Absolutely. Analyst Yonder Alonzo speaking on MLB network was quoted by sports illustrated saying the Dominican Republic is just as good as team USA as the Japan roster, but he noted that starting pitching is the X factor. No specific pitchers were named in that particular comment, but that feels like the right read. The Dominican lineup is stacked beyond belief. If the pitching holds up, this team can beat anyone in the world. What strikes me about all of this is the redemption arc. And I am not just throwing that word around. This is a guy who missed all of 2022. A guy who had to watch the 2023 WBC from the outside because of his own choices. A guy who is dealt with injuries that would have broken lesser players.
And now here he is healthy, confident, wearing his country's colors, standing in front of his home fans in Sano Domingo, getting standing ovation, ripping doubles at 110 miles per hour off the bat and telling the best team on the planet that he is coming for them. That is not just a sports story, that is a human story, whether the Padres ultimately move him out of the lead off spot or keep in there, whether the Dominican Republic captures its second WBC title or fall short, the Fager mains that Fernando Toddis Jr. is doing what he was put on this earth to do. He is playing baseball at the highest level, representing something bigger than himself and doing it all with a fire and passion that you simply cannot teach or manufacture. It is real, it is raw and it is beautiful. Man, I love this game. All right, listen, that is going to do it for this one.
