Over half the population is overweight or obese, with more than one in five people eating takeaways or ready meals over three times a week. There are now 49,254 such spots nationwide, up more than 2 percent in just the past year. Here this week, researchers highlighted stark local differences using government data. Camden in North London leads with 1,153 percent more takeaways than supermarkets, one for every 228, people versus one supermarket per 2,626. Tame side near Manchester in Newham in London, follow close behind with similar huge gaps. People often pick convenience over health, with 47 percent saying wellness ranks low when ordering food and nearly a third prioritizing ease. Only 3 percent never touch takeaways, while just 13 percent cook from scratch every day.

Among young adults aged 18-24, a third are overweight or obese, and child rates hit 10.5 percent in reception year and 22.2 percent by year six. Many in that age group lack basic cooking skills like chopping an onion, though they're pros with air friars. The National Health Service shels out 11 billion pounds yearly on obesity, with total societal costs nearing 74.3 billion pounds. Officials are pushing back through a 10-year health plan, banning new fast-food spots near schools, expanding sugar taxes, curbing junk food ads, and boosting healthy food access to ease the load and build better habits for the future.
