Families Fight for School Bus Safety After Tragedies

Two Northern Ireland families, devastated by the loss of their daughters in school bus tragedies, are fighting for safer roads. Caitlin Hogg and Caitlin-Rose McMullan, both struck by cars after disembarking their buses, have inspired their parents, Bob Hogg and Stella McGinn, to advocate for change. Currently, UK law lacks a requirement for drivers to halt when school buses load or unload, unlike in America and Canada. The families campaign has gained traction, with local councils and politicians supporting their cause. Infrastructure Minister Liz Kimmins has initiated a public consultation on potential solutions, such as banning overtakes on stopped buses in hazardous areas. With the assembly election approaching in May 2023, the families and leaders are racing against time to implement these safety measures and prevent further tragedies.
