This is One Piece by The Book, a One Piece podcast series where we read through One Piece One volume at a time. I'm one of your hosts, Zach. I'm One of your hosts, Kerson. And on today's show, we have our special guest of the week, month episode volume talkobon. Joey Weissers with us. Joey, I usually list your works contemporaneously, but I'm going to read them this time. I'm prepared for this podcast. I prepare ahead of time. I don't do that with the rest of the show. So in reverse chronological, I think the littlest fighter track and racer ghost hog, Merman, five books, cavemen in space,

tales of an usual circumstance in the ride home. And I have to purchase these now for my son. I think he is like just at the right age now. I mean, now that he thinks he likes Sonic and Pokemon, but he doesn't know what either of those things really are. I think it's the perfect time for Merman. Perfect. Joey, welcome on the show. I's no word nominated artist and author. Yeah, thanks. Thanks for having me. I think this is a fun new project for the podcast. So I'm looking forward to kind of getting in on the ground floor. More or less. Here you are on the third floor. We're talking about volume three, who I have to assume the title is definitely translated as, don't get fooled again, named after the George W. Bush quote from the same era. I assume. What? Obviously the who song? No, no, it's. That's also a good song though.

Yeah, I think the wiki has listed as something else. I don't have it in front of me, but Stephen Paul did make a note regarding volume two that buggy the clown is not the official title. They usually track along with the chapters. And I think that one was versus buggy the clown. So we apologize to our listeners out there. Before we even get into this, actually Joey first. Yes. I know you're probably going to talk about your one piece origin story a little bit more as it becomes relevant here. But do you want to let people know who you are, what you do, and how you found one piece? Yeah, sure. Yeah, I mean, you give me a pretty good introduction there. I'm a cartoonist. And I'm a big anime and manga fan as well as indie comics and things like that. But my origins to one piece really do tie into this volume specifically.

I'm sure later on we're going to talk about the important world events that happened along with this book coming out. But I want to talk about an important world event that happened when these chapters were serialized. And that is that I first got exposed to one piece, the most important world event of them. Wow. This was your, did you, I didn't realize you beat Stephen Paul and Greg in, I forgot. Wow, Joey, you're our record holder then. Yeah, I've told the story once or twice on the podcast, but it's been a while. So I guess I'll do a short version. Like basically in high school, I was in high school in the late 90s. I was very like getting into anime and manga extremely into Dragon Ball. And I was studying Japanese and my dad started, my dad traveled a lot for work. And he started taking business trips to Japan occasionally.

And he asked if there was anything that he could bring back from Japan. And the internet wasn't what it is today back then. But so I didn't know a lot about this stuff. But I, yeah. But I did know that Dragon Ball had been serialized in this magazine called Shonen Jump. So I said, like, please bring me back, you know, Shonen Jump is yours. Cause I want to see, I knew Dragon Ball wasn't going to be in the issue, but I wanted to see what was all about these days, you know. And, and, and I think maybe at first the guys that he was working with over there would help him go to a new stand and pick one out. And then eventually over time they started buying issues and having them waiting for him in the office when he would come there and bring them back. That's so nice. And that's really cool. I'm going to take advantage of, yeah, it is very sweet. But taking advantage of our video that we're taking now. This is the first issue of Shonen Jump that I ever laid my eyes on.

It's a 1998 issue, issue six. So, you could slab it and sell it. Yeah, no, yeah, Logan Paul call me. I don't know. But you can see it's like a group cover. There's a bunch of like folks that people might recognize. But the very first chapter in this book in the magazine is one piece chapter 22, which is, got, has some beautiful color pages, color artwork. But it is, let's see. Yeah, there he is. Wait, it's twenty chapter. Oh, it literally, I, I don't, you know what? I think I like a, it's that thing where you just remember things on clearly. I knew you've always been a guy mon fan and I knew that that's why you want to be on for this episode. But I completely did not realize that was also your first. Yeah, so it's important to me. And I'll talk more about guy mon later when we actually talk about the volume. But basically like, I would, I would say that at this point, I could barely,

I basically couldn't read Japanese. And I would get these magazines occasionally off and on throughout the year. And so all I really knew about one piece is that it was in the magazine and that it was seen fairly popular because it got covers a lot and that it was about pirates. And I'd say a kind of bigger marker for me was when I did a student exchange in the year 2000. And one piece was on TV at that point. I think when I was over there is the Bratierk, if I recall correctly, and it was already kind of blowing up in popularity. And so I knew it was very popular. But I still hadn't quite like super hooked into it as like my series. I was very into Shaman King at that time. But, and then, you know, and then in college, 2001, 2002, you know, I had access to high speed internet. And that's when I found kind of the early days of scanlations, which again, wasn't like the way that scanlations operate to this day.

So I would read it like in batches. I don't think I got caught up until like water seven and started reading weekly in the water seven days. And then as far as the anime, again, if I can kind of like boast about this, my first exposure to the anime was besides seeing it in Japan. Because I had some VHS fan subs of the anime. Storkish. Right. And what were the other ones? No, no, no, no. So this is, this was, these are fan subs done by fan subvers. Oh, the Hong Kong bootlegs. DVDs. So that's what I eventually moved on to. Yeah, I bought like maybe the first 10 episodes on VHS fan side by somebody. I don't know those tapes. I might have them in a closet somewhere. But I did watch the, then the Hong Kong DVDs. And then it's the kind of like standard thing that you hear about it. That moving on to digital fan subs. And then eventually moving on to like, you know, the official streams. And, and the VHS Alpha, you know, digital magazines and all that stuff.

And, you know, I'm an official reader. And now at this point. And, but, but yeah, my roots definitely were in the kind of like bootleg world. Yeah, I think, I think that was everyone, at least certainly in the early aughts. When they really was not including for kids. There was really not very much legitimate possibility to follow one piece. That's a crazy story. I don't, I think you, I think I vaguely recall you mentioning. I knew you were close to Steven and I first came on. Yeah, I knew you were close to Steven and Greg. I didn't realize you beat them. Yeah, I mean, I would say that I was first exposed to one piece before they were. But I think they were both into one piece before I was that. So now we can't hear Joey. You're through the way. I see Steven pounding in the corner. Miss Simba. So, why, we'll go through what was going on in the world when, when you picked up that issue.

Was there anything? It's Titanic still at the box office. I don't know, but probably I didn't shut that. That sounds right to me. First of all, I mean, so you were in high school in 98. I was going into middle school. So it feels like those amount of, well, when you're growing up, you know, there's actual big differences when you're at that age. But like now that we're in the ages that we are 20s, whatever it is, it's much less significant. But anyway, I do, I don't even know what I was going to say. In summer of 1998, where you want first, Joey, your hour guest, anime, film, or TV. That's what I got. There's a three categories. Let's do film. I want to hear about Titanic. Film. I didn't write anything about Titanic, but opening in the box office, I didn't because I don't care. Your heart will not go on. What I was going to say is 98 did feel like forever because when you're in like middle and high school, years feel like centuries.

So Titanic really did feel like a thing for like decades. But then I could look back and it was probably a couple months. Anyway, or a year in, what do you say film in June, Mulan and the Truman show opened in the box office. Hell yeah. Good month. Yeah, there's a lot more I'm skipping, but these are the ones that like popped out at me. So take the basic, my basic takes here in July. We have Armageddon, the parent trap, with Lindsay Lohan, and the mask of Zoro. So relevant because we were talking about, we know that guy, we know that guy, two ours, two ours, no L. And then for fans of last week tonight and others, airbud, golden retriever, I think is the title came out. Airbud, a scene on last week tonight. Golden receiver, sorry, you're right. Golden receiver. I think that's the sequel.

Oh, sequel. You're right. It is the sequel. Oh, no. So last week tonight they did a whole, John Oliver did like three web segments devoted to airbud. Very much worth a watch. I have you like to waste a time. They're great though. And also bleed, which is a, which is a movie I really liked, but I feel like it's never talked about. Yeah, that was an early instance of people being like, they can make comic books into a movie. Yep. Maybe that's why I liked it so much. It was one of those things. Kirsten, anime or TV? Anime, please. Anime for 98. In the summer of 98, serial experiments, Lane changed the entire psyche of an adolescent culture. Continuing, and I think we talked about this last time because these volumes come out pretty quick. But still airing, initial D cowboy bebop, tri-gun, card capture, Sakura, all going.

Like at the same time in Japan, pretty incredible. And on July 18th, 1998, the Pokemon, the first movie came out to $172 million total. In only Japan, my Pokemon knowledge is limited. So I don't know if you all could shine a light on that for me. Oh, man. I mean, I think maybe it came out and. I most of so come out in 98 in the States, but it came out around Thanksgiving, which I remember because I had a. Tradition where I went with my aunt and my uncle and my two cousins who are significantly older than me. So they were probably in like college at that time. But I was a wee little kid. So I got to pick what movie we went to see the night before Thanksgiving. And I made them go see the Pokemon movie. Good good job. Yeah, I'm sure all of them were thrilled.

I think I remember my aunt kind of coming out and being like, that was interesting. Wow. How old were you? For you, I don't have to say because I guess I would. I mean, I was probably elementary school. If we're going high school, middle elementary school. Like, you'll say that's interesting. That movie was interesting to a kid. Oh, no, that's my aunt. Yeah, yeah. No, that's why I'm saying. I think she should have sugar coated it slightly more. She was the one who sugar coated it. I watched Pokemon on TV. I would say with a healthy teenage, like irony attached to it. I didn't go out and see the movies. So I've never seen that movie. Yeah. Japanese. If you can find the Japanese version, it's a fascinating watch. It's a very different movie. It's like way darker. I'm sure I feel like that's one episode of.

Oh, yeah, I've seen one episode of Pokemon in Japanese. It's the mouth like origin episode. Yeah, it had a very different vibe. They always do. This is why the subverses dub debate exists because people think that that's all series where it's not. Yeah. I mean, I feel like the late 90s, as evidenced by four kids, is just like the height of. Let us make the job a different thing. Yeah, I think four kids got a lot more blowback also for one piece because they were doing a thing you did in the late 90s in the early and or mid-auts where that really had lost any like cash, cash, I want to say. Anyway, the last category I'll choose because it's the only one is TV. We have important to me, the Seinfeld finale on May 14th as a cultural moment.

76.3 million people watch that, which is an insane number of people to watch a single thing. I mean, speaking of like a monoculture discussion, like all of this stuff kind of feels like that because these all really were in the zeitgeist. But I remember kids at school who had never watched Seinfeld before watching just that episode being like. I did. That was me. It wasn't very good. I was like, well, it wouldn't mean anything to you if you haven't seen any of the other shit the rest of the show. Yeah, that was me because I mean, I didn't watch Seinfeld when I was in elementary school. That's not really the target audience. But also more importantly, Sailor Moon premiered on Tsunami on June 1st, 1998. So that's actually that's when we could all relate to. Not that there's anything wrong with that. Okay, we could move on into the volume unless there's anything else in 98 cursed in that you have.

I briefly looked up music that the charts include Boyzone, no matter what. Spice Girls, Viva forever and Will Smith, just the two of us. Oh, well, that one. Yeah, takes me back. That's the original just the two of us. Just the two of us. Oh, and eagle eye cherry save tonight. Oh my god. I'm sure if I heard that I remember. Save tonight. Oh, yes. You did. You could have just done the two words. I would have. We're going to get copyright. But this is this is my chance to pull out one of my favorite weird little bits of music knowledge, which is that. Eagle eye cherry is the son of dawn cherry. Who is like a very, very infamous. Three jazz experimental jazz trumpet player.

Whoa. That is interesting. Yeah. Thank you, Kirsten. You're welcome. I'm so happy. Yeah, I love jazz. It is the hardest. I like. I'm not going off on this, but it's it's it seems to me to be the hardest thing to learn. Anyway, I have a degree in it. And you do. Yeah. I have a degree in jazz guitar. But you have a degree in one piece volume three. We're talking about that today. So I hope so. Oh, it's in Japanese. So did you read this volume in Japanese, Kirsten, before we even like jump in. I, yes, for the most part, yes. Okay. So we're going to have questions, right, Joey? I assume we're going to have questions for you. What we got there? Well, that's it. That's why until we get there. This was a hard one for me to write very short summaries on. So I apologize in advance. But I'm going to do my best. In volume three, we have chapter 18, the pirate buggy, the clown.

After everyone is asleep or unconscious, Luffy fights buggy. Buggy gets his knives in Luffy's hat. And Luffy gets angry about it. Chapter 19, devil fruit. Buggy shares his hatred of shanks, which is totally justified. And not because of anything that Buggy himself did to deserve it. And anyone who says so is a liar. Chapter 20, the way of the thief, Nami tries to steal Buggy's treasure. Luffy tickles his feet. And Luffy's feet, obviously. And Nami ties up Buggy's legs and other body parts. And Luffy sends him flying away. Townies, I have to, Townies is chapter 41. Forget him reading two people and not to myself. After Luffy catapults Buggy, Luffy and the straw hats get in trouble with the town, mostly because Luffy's telling the truth in a way that makes them look as bad as possible.

But Shushu steps in to protect them. Meanwhile, Mayor Boodle gives a big thank you to the straw hats as they set off with Nami in tow. And I mean that literally because they're in two boats speaking of in chapter 22, strange creatures. The mega sized chapter that Joey Weiser premiered his one piece career in. Yeah, Zoro's asleep for almost this entire chapter. Which is excellent. Nami fixes the straw hat after Buggy's thing. After Buggy stabs it. They come to a mysterious island. Luffy gets shot by a man stuck in a treasure box, treasure chest, whose name is Guymon. Nami explains the red line and grandline geography in the middle of this chapter. We get a full back story for Guymon, which includes that he want treasure chest. He tried to get treasure chest.

He fall into treasure chest. He stuck in treasure chest. But they were unreachable and Luffy finds out empty. What was that all about? Anyway, he asked Guymon to join the straw hats. But Guymon politely refuses saying he'd rather stay on the island of strange animals. Chapter 23. The dread Captain Usa. Was this corrected in your version Joey or I don't know if you have the old version too. I have the same gold oil one that has that has Zoro correctly spelled. So this one I don't have Zoro correctly spelled. I have it for the first two. I knew three was also correct, but I don't have that one. But it does say dread Captain, that has to be a mistake right? I'm losing it. Chapter 23. Anyway, while Joe isn't that the famous pirate the dread Captain.

Oh, wait, what is that? It sounds very familiar to me. Yeah, it's the dread Captain Usa. I think it's supposed to be that way. That's a reference to something. But the Japanese is just like Captain Usa appears. So we're for identifying the titles a little bit still. Little bit. So Captain Usa appears and he's dreaded. Nami says they need a bigger boat. Enter Usa. Oh, sorry to interrupt. No, I'm thinking of is the dread pirate Robert, which is from the Princess bride. That's probably what it is. Which honestly, I bet Oda has seen and was referencing. He might have been. And I would definitely not be surprised if the folks who put the Viz volume together was referencing that. That sounds absolutely correct. Yeah, that.

Oh, yeah, actually that wouldn't have come from Oda because that's the Viz people. Japanese titles. Yeah, I don't know how big is the Princess bride in Japan. Like, I don't know. I feel like them. I don't know. Whatever. I've never encountered it. It seems to have an interest in American. He does. He does. We'll get bored of that in future volumes for certain. Anyway, Nami says they need a bigger boat. Enter Captain Usa who tells truths to his to the village. He only tells them when things are going great. He sees his crew onion carrot and pepper. Yes, that onion carrot and pepper. And they an onion tells them that there is a pirate crew with Buggies flag at the coast. And it is the straw hat. So, Us brave Captain Usap faces them with his 80 million men strong. And then they have a nice meal at the restaurant, Meshie.

Chapter 24, the live. Rejector. I know. Yeah, we know Dungeon Meshie and delicious. That's kind of. The lie rejector. Usap's crew meets Zoro the cannibal and Nami the ogress. Claude or an extremely suspicious butler doats on Kaya forbidding her from seeing the great Captain Usap. Captain Usap sneaks in when Claude or and then Claude or confronts him and Usap lands a brave punch onto Claude or his face. Chapter 25 lies or as Captain Usap would put a truth. Claude or Taunt's Usap then apologizes to Kaya and gives his you know back story, which I'm sure is very legitimate. Then, enter next week's guest. Next episode's guest, Alex will be very excited about. Django the hypnotist, a weird man, could only be described as weird.

Also, we find out that Usap's dad is Yasup who's on Shanks' crew. Can you believe that? Yeah. We should believe that. That's true. And also, Claude or plans to kill Kaya but they don't worry. The game that would really hide that fact. And finally, chapter 26, Captain Kurro's plan, the evil Captain Kurro tells Django his scheme but the brave Captain Usap and also Luffy are listening above on the cliff. Luffy fearlessly or foolishly calls Kurro out but he gets hypnotized. He falls asleep, falls off the cliff to his demise. There goes Luffy. No one believes the great Captain Usap and unfortunately Kurro's plan seems set to begin. And that is volume 3. I hope I gave that straight. Those were just the facts.

That's how it's good to me. Just the facts. So first, let's go through the end of the Orange Town stuff first. Then we'll do the Guy Monstuff. Then we'll do the Serv village stuff, which is Usap stuff. So first, Joey, since you weren't on for the first two volumes, what were your thoughts and reactions reading these chapters now? Yeah, you know, and I didn't read one and two before jumping into three. So it was actually really confusing. You must have not known it was confusing. I mean, I've read it several times and seen the anime and everything. But it wasn't hard to follow, but it was kind of weird jumping in at that point where it starts. Because you just kind of miss a little of that visceral feeling of really being invested in it. You kind of dropped in and saying, like, what's happening? Oh, they're fighting. And the fighting is kind of wrapping up.

So, but I think there's still a lot to appreciate. I think the biggest thing that really struck me is like, this is the first fight with another devil fruit user, right? And so, and what's really on display is like, Oda's creativity of like what you can do with different powers and stuff. And the stuff like you mentioned, like tickling the feed and tying him up and kind of like, he's, Oda's not the kind of like shown in manga fight storyteller that is really into establishing a lot of rules and like working off of that. It's kind of a bit more like feelings feelings based. But I think maybe some more rules about Buggy's powers may be kind of like come in later in the story. But like, it was fun to see him really like play around with everything you could do. With a mix of Luffy and and Buggy's powers.

Uh, Kirsten. Yeah, it's, I mean. Again, like even as someone who read the previous volume right before this, it was this sort of feeling of like, oh, we're starting here. Okay. But yeah, I mean, this stuff with Buggy and chanks his kids. I mean, we can get into it in the spoiler zone, but it's just so. Something that just kind of gains richness over time, I think. Like, yes. Knowing where they end up and coming back to that is incredibly. We'll see. I think yeah, we'll save our, that one. We'll dive into more anything in the spoiler zone because that's like it's very hard to talk about that without entering that zone.

Yeah, but go ahead, Kirsten. I think it's a tiny buggy. Amazing forever. Yeah. He's all face. He's all, oops, all face. I forgot, I forgot somehow that it was Nami who comes up at the time, but like, of course, I forgot that. Yeah, I forgot that. So I work that clever. Yeah. Was also sleeping, but yeah. Zoro's also sleeping. Yeah, I mean, I really love. This arc. It's, it's really, it does a great job of setting up Nami and buggy and. Just sort of this classic trope that will keep seeing of. The pirates are the good guys, but Luffy is kind of in no interest of like playing the hero to the town.

Yeah. For me, yeah, so I've read, I actually read the first part of volume three, like right after we finished recording our volume two. And then I stopped before a guy mon. And you know, read the rest of it. I read some of it today, but I read most of it this week. And I think that helped with the stuff with buggy a lot more because I didn't really feel I didn't have that like feeling of jumping into it at that point. That might also be like, I think Oda's generally a little more cognizant of like where volumes begin and end maybe more than he used to be. Although the big, it had a big cliffhanker. The second one is how do you know shanks? However, God East blue feels like the world is really tiny at times because everyone's related to shanks in some way somehow immediately.

And it's I think Oda realizes that's limiting a little bit and drops that kind of thread. I'd say after this maybe after Baradier because you have. I won't say what happens there, but there's a few more ties to shanks, I think. Yeah, I did really enjoy this though. And this is the most I think I've enjoyed this particular arc. It's just simple and fun and straightforward and Luffy's character, I think particularly really shines throughout. The Shushu story is good. I think we talked about it last week at last time that the same kind of story is done a little bit later and maybe a little bit better. However, I don't think it diminishes this story. I think I really said my piece on it. Shushu forever. I think I said my piece in the spoiler zone to last week, like as to like where how I feel like this fits into the full story.

And whether or not it holds up on that, I still am shocked that the bootle I like I knew bootle and poodle, but I didn't really for some reason or maybe I did and I forgot that he has the hair like a poodle. Anyway, that was new guy mom we should talk about wait for for you to move on. No, no, we're talking about bootle forever. Yes, please go ahead. I do kind of want to talk about the knives and the hat. Oh, yeah, yeah, yeah, this is exactly what I wanted to talk about. Yeah, please go ahead. Oh, I was just going to talk. I mean, it's a significant moment, which you maybe want to talk about, but I wanted to talk about like yours here, the art of it. I think, um, Oda really draws this hat in a floppy way that I don't think he would today. Um, I think the hat has become a much more kind of stiff and iconic looking item that he doesn't mess around with it quite as much.

And so it's very dramatic in this when it gets sliced and it's the kind of thing that feels like it could be. Um, a well that he would keep coming back to you, but this is a very dramatic moment and those, those stitches like kind of hang around. I don't think this is really getting into spoilers to say that like in times later in the series where he's drawing things more detailed, he still does kind of hint at those stitches at the, the knives poking through the hat. And so this is a very like it felt like a very significant moment. I mean, it's like literally pokes through that. You never see that stitch. Yeah, and the guy on. Yeah, it is very funny, but that was only there for creative purposes. Yes, sorry going. It's interesting like, I mean, even in like a, there's a certain official merch today that include the stitches. Yeah, yeah.

Or the good pieces of merch unless it's like too obvious then it's like, okay, one of the subtle. It's, it's, it's so obvious the way it's just like kind of a, you know, some I have seen it done well. Maybe not always that maybe in like more of the cosplay, like sort of straw hat. Oh, yeah. It can be done well. Um, and it should be done well and it should be there, I think. Um, that's like the, yeah, that's like a fun thing, especially since it happened so early in the series at like once it a little. It's funny, like, especially just walking around in Japan. It's like sometimes this has happened more than once in a single year in Osaka where I'll see somebody wearing. Like a straw hat with a red band and be sort of like, is this person a one piece fan and then you see the three stitches. And it's like, oh yeah, no, it's this person's a one piece fan. It's always tourists incidentally.

I mean, I, I always forget how like commonplace the straw hat with a red band is, especially in like, I think Asian agriculture. I think it's like a very symbolic thing. Um, it's, I don't know if there's anything to talk about with that, but uh, just putting that out there. I mean, I don't know. I feel like I see it pretty rarely in Japan outside of one piece fans now because I feel like that item has become so. It has. Yeah. With. Yeah, he's really taking that. He's really taking that symbol. I like it was an. It's basically an emoji, I think already, because they have, it's the one with the ribbon, but it's very, I mean, like, it's a very iconic look, even predating one piece, which so it's interesting how it's completely subsumed. Uh, the culture for that. Um, Joey, do you. I think it's also like help. I think it also is a good example of what's really exciting about these early chapters where Oda is willing to kind of like, um, go a little harder and like kind of like, um, be a bit more extreme with some of the stuff.

And I don't mean in a like violent way, but in, and he's kind of pushing things and willing to push past the iconography of what he's established. Yeah, some of that stuff is a little bit more set and stone these days. Yeah. And it's that kind of wild cartooniness that still exists in the series in different ways these days, but like is all over these early chapters. And I find very exciting to kind of return to. I mean, it says a lot that I don't think the hat is messed with again, like ever. I have to think about that. But yeah, I, I think it is something unique about this particular story with buggy and loofy. But like the fact that buggy has a relationship with shanks and actually I think makes this moment all the more impactful than versus if it was just some guy who's like, I hate red hair or oh, I hate.

This is just stupid treasure who cares real treasure is coins and it's I think also the fact that buggy has this really ridiculous hatred of shanks, which I forget how stupid it is. It's the ultimate sunder a boom. Yeah, like I also like I wonder how it is in the Japanese, but when we'll get into it in the spoiler zone where I bet, but like shanks is how he talks to buggy is interesting. It's like as like a cordial colleague and not necessarily someone he would like die for even though he would hear apparently potentially. I would say when he talks to buggy and Japanese, it is it's very friendly. Yeah, it's very like it's not quite really friendly.

I mean, it's he's using just sort of like typical like friend Japanese he's not using like the. Could it is all kind of like rough Japanese, but it's all very like. Was buggy using it? Yeah, of course he is. Yeah, buggy is like oh, I love shanks. Shanks is a more laid back character in general. Yeah, yeah, yeah, I'm sure he talks like that's everyone to be fair. But yeah, shanks shanks is Japanese to towards buggy feels. He's not being like rough in macho. He's being very just sort of warm in friendly. Okay. I don't know where it was originally going with that, but we should talk about Guymon. Joey, you want to give you the floor because you're the you're the guy mom man, guy man. Yeah, so I mean, Guymon, the reason why it's I keep saying this and some listeners made it.

So yeah, Guymon's kind of a favorite character of mine. I think he's kind of like falls in the realm of glubshooter for me. I mean, he's not the like most obscure character, but I think amongst more casual fans, they might need a little prodding to remember. Oh, that guy in the treasure chest, you know, but you know, there's a few things. I have the personal connection because of this chapter that I first saw for sure. I've also seen I think once or twice Oda has maybe as semi as a joke said that Guymon is his favorite character. And so that may have just kind of stuck in my head a little bit. But I think the thing I really love about Guymon is that I think he's kind of like a perfect encapsulation of what I love about the series. Because he is this like balance of like he's a like quote unquote ugly character design, but he's also like cute in it in a sort of off beat way. And he's it's a very like funny design that has kind of a joke to it that he's stuck in this treasure chest.

But he also has a lot of pay those because his story is very sad. And and then the treasure chest in general like ties into the pirate theme, which is a thing that I really like about especially the kind of for several years. I'd say of one piece where like Oda was very careful about how he would dole out this like pirate theming stuff where there ever once in a while there's a guy who has like a sort of famous thing that you might associate with a pirate, but he doesn't throw it all into the first arc. You know he'll sprinkle it all sprinkled it in it will be like maybe something left of center for what you might associate with like a peg leg or hook hand or a parrot things like that without going into details. And so yeah, and so his whole story like feeds into the like treasure aspect of piracy, which I think is interesting. And I mean, I feel like I can keep going on, but the chapter itself also has a lot of like examples of what I love about the series too.

But what do you guys think about Guymon as a character first before we talk about the story? I feel like for me, Guymon and Foxy exist in this similar space where like because I watch the anime first. And so when I got to them in the manga, I was like wait, these guys weren't anime filler what? Yeah. So like there's there's a I almost feel like Guymon is this sort of like beaver dream. Where I'm like, oh yeah, he's here. Wow, which is not like I love Guymon. I think he's a fantastic character. But yeah, he almost has this sort of hallucinatory quality for me. Yeah, this chapter is a real like kind of palette cleanser in between arcs, which is I think often the function of those or where they put in the filler arcs in the anime.

It's a really funny observation. I think it's almost like the one time really where there is a sort of like filler arc in the manga. Like just a story that happens within one chapter and there it is. I kind of wish there was more of this in the series like I really yeah, yeah, it has a very lovely tone. I love I mean, I just love one piece the most when it's the character is getting put in weird situations and just hanging out and this chapter or just asleep in the background the whole time. This whole volume is pretty light on Zoro material. I gotta say. There's one I will get there, but the him teasing onion pepper and carrot I thought was excellent. I'm like, this is this is Zoro because when we get when we'll get we'll get there when we get there with Guymon.

Yeah. I completely agree with Kirsten's take. I think it's really crazy to see Oda do like a super size chapter that's basically a very tiny arc within one single chapter. It is not like anything he did before or has done since this specific chapter. So it's like an extra special thing that you got to have that be your first for a into the series. You know what it's like and this is my like other kind of big rain take on this. It's like a flashback. This is like showing what Oda's real strength is like where he can really knock things out. It is these short stories. Yes. Oda is revered for having this like big long epic and what he's able to do with that which is really really interesting. But some of the most powerful Oda stuff is done in these like short bites where he can really like hammer in the themes of whatever he's telling the story about and like introduce you to a character.

Make you care about them and then spin that into the bigger story in an interesting way. And this one chapter is like kind of a preview of what he's able to do later with what is mostly in the flashback chapters that I think become stronger and stronger which I know we haven't really gotten to in this reread just yet but they're they're coming. But we'll get there probably sooner rather than later. Yeah, I think structurally you're right. And it's this this chapter is like a really I want to say bizarre but it is like nothing else in the series this particular one. Which is why I think we're talking about it. It's like a good third of the volume right it's like it's a big chunk of this. And I'm trying to like remember the circumstances but I know he purposely made it just one chapter because he didn't want to like split it between two for whatever reason story wise.

Yeah, I mean the magazine is from January and it's a big group cover and the chapter illustration is rabbits pounding mochi. And so I think it has a kind of New Year's celebration aspect to it. I think in the way. And mochi is a full thing that's that's right now. Yeah, that's right. Well for those listening. Oh, I guess I was thinking about the mochi that you eat at New Year's the like mochi ball things. Yeah, there's a thing about like rabbits pounding mochi on the moon which burger chains used to put mochi on their burgers. Okay, well then then maybe that's not an aspect of why it's something. I just always kind of thought that this was like a celebration chapter for one reason or another that's kind of starting the New Year off and he just wrapped up an arc and yeah, I don't know. Was it issue was also New Year's. So. It's issue six but it's a January issue.

So I think there's also mochi pounding in New Year's. We could always pow mochi. So yeah, no, I did enjoy it. It is an extremely stupid, sensitive, stupid, funny, cute, and stupid chapter, which is what Oda is going for. It's yeah, and I agree with the take that I kind of wish we had more of these and I think the problem with filler generally and particularly the problem with filler that has existed in one piece is that it's not written by Oda and you could really tell it's not written by Oda and the characters are just not really the characters in them and you'll get stuff like a piece which I'm out spoiling because it doesn't really happen. I know what happens in the future and the anime but it completely undercuts a lot of things that happen later in the series that happen before in the series and and a lot there are exceptions but a lot of those filler arcs just are not good at writing the star hats and that's kind of where you start losing things.

I will say Oda had filler. Yeah, I will say I will stand up for the filler arc in between or like that happens immediately after Skype. Yeah, that's the one everyone would she. Yeah, that one that one's incredible. That's that's the yeah, no, that's I think everyone agrees with that I haven't heard anyone I've heard a few hot takes on G8 but most of those takes. When yeah coming coming from the anime to the manga I was like what do you mean G8's not in the manga but boxes. That when we get a foxies material well hopefully have Steve your going others on but to really properly defend that when we get there. But since we're not in the spoiler zone yet we'll get there in a minute let's talk about the sir village stuff. Wait, wait, wait before we move on I just want to point out that when when he says like this boxes come to fit me the Japanese for that is.

Miracle fit. Oh great love it. Before we move on I also want to mention that this is a fun kind of like throw away chapter in some ways but it does have some kind of like. Important stuff moving forward to because we get this like world map and the talk of the red line and grandline. And it also like is really good at sort of setting stakes where we see you know what could happen like pirates that fail before they even leave the East blue true you know stories like that. And so it still does like it does function as part of the whole it does yeah even though it mostly is its own separate little thing. Like this is why like when we get there I some of my favorite arcs are the little arcs like I do agree I think your Joe you're take on like Otis storytelling as like a short it's it's I'm very torn about it because like okay if Oda let's say Oda never wrote one piece and he wrote a bunch of short.

Like by design like the the chainsaw man author I noted a lot of that food food you know I didn't want to say the wrong name. I think he would have succeeded but there's also something about the fact that these short stories occur within this sweeping epic that give them like some pre existing foundation that lift the whole thing up. Like I can't even really talk about them until we get there but I think it's both that take is both right but also like you know the some of those strengths are because it is so long. Yeah especially later on in the series it's I but I do agree though that Otis best storytelling is done on a limited timeframe. So it village who's up. I forgot that is no select weird it yeah it's bizarre and just look so weird it's so distracting say he's probably if not the straw straw hat but maybe the the character period that goes through the biggest transformation character design wise.

I think there's another character is a kind of cute mascot character that we haven't gotten to yet it goes through a yes equally big transformation but that big kind of they kind of go from cute to a different kind of cute whereas who's up goes from a truly unappealing character design I would say to a more appealing character design later down the line. I hate this design but it is not him I mean so for those who are watching the video who forget what us up looks like in in the first volume I'll show and like how would you describe. How would you describe him here. The nose is like I mean he goes. We all know and love us up as having like the cartoonish round Pinocchio nose and this us up has like Oda almost tried to make an actual human nose long and it is uncomfortable. And it's more like needily kind of yeah yeah needle nose it's got like stars rolls.

And you know what it made me do is I actually looked up more recent designs for Yasup and was like how has he changed and he's stayed pretty consistent I mean he's changed a lot but he's he hasn't gone through the quite the same sort of transformation. And that you saw pez. Yeah I think he looks the same he wears a headband with his name on it so we know who he is yeah yeah. Yeah I mean I it was distracting I'll say that like but despite what you may think of the the original design I do agree that those two characters that you named the mascot character that is related to Pikachu and this literally. Usop those come to mind like it's I am going to be playing paying close attention next volume to see when and how that change starts developing yeah and this is this isn't like.

Like say a character changes character designs for a specific reason this is more like drawing yeah just sort of changes over time because of the way that happens that happens when I draw characters to is the more you draw them you start leaning into different aspects of them and they just turn out a little bit different. And I think that isop just goes through a really dramatic transformation that's not story based on any way. No yeah and Zoro Nami and Luffy really look the same throughout the series yes Otis style drastically changes through you know several many many times I mean it's a 30 year series I'm not spoiling anything to say that his art styles can change but like they they're they really look like themselves like from the from the get go and Otis. You know since since the release of this volume has released a ton of like sketches and stuff that he had done in the many many years prior to this and and is up was cemented but it's kind of crazy to see you know the evolution that he's gone through versus the other other east blue crew.

Curses anything else about us up or the so pirates or yeah it is just like and this is a much discussed aspect of this. Art but it is it's like who's up becomes like a bowl once you learn about kaya and like that whole art and by the time that he punches claw HUD or you're just like yeah yeah but like in these initial pages when you first meet him and he's just like bothering the town. And especially an ink he I think he comes off even more childish in English than he does Japanese because in English he seems really just like. I mean but he is laughing a lot in the Japanese but there is some specific thing he said in the English where it's just like oh my god.

Look at how crazy he looks in this one panel for those watching the video I'll point to the page but like sorry I'm never going to get over that he looked they all look crazy in that though that's page 126 of volume 3 anyway please go ahead. Yeah it is sort of like as much as we're talking about like out of tweaking the design I feel like there was also a little tweaking that he does get to with kaya but it's like how to make usops like lies and tall tales. And in during aspect of his character rather than just an annoying one. I think Oda had that in mind like from the get go and I think even the come up and set the end I'll say the come up and set the very end of this volume is like truly heartbreaking despite the fact that it is so obvious the whole time which is supposed to be like.

Something's going to actually happen in parts are going to come is going to be like the. Cruise line like no one's going to believe you anyway like go is just like is is really heart wrenching I thought on this reread like it's like there's up you've you've after so here there's nothing you could even do. It's that whole I mean before he sees clawador kuro on the beach like that whole interaction between us up and clawador and kaya's backyard like yeah. There's I guess like there's this sort of moment in your childhood when you're not sure if an adult is like being reasonable or not you know like yeah it seems like they're being an asshole but there's like a part of you that's like not totally sure right which is what.

Clawador kuro is leaning into right like he's leaning into this idea of like I'm an adult therefore I have this power over you to make you feel bad about that's a very astute yeah that's that's exactly I he also. Yeah it's he there's definitely I think the power dynamic of it is it is super interesting I think on a reread just like the. What is doing something very different in this arc like it is a this is not you know any sort of sweeping epics it's not like the you know romance on when I say like it's not like this romanticized thing it's just like character work which is very very different. Then anything we see before or after once again like this is a very different experiment he is going into with this and it's like very it feels very low stakes despite obviously for the characters it's very high stakes but you're in a village of who cares what the name is and there's one rich person and she's sick and there's us up and he's trying to make her feel better and there's an evil person.

And there's an evil butler I mean this feels like a very basic kind of you know story but Oda yeah yeah go ahead. I this is something that really struck me reading this park this time is how he handles. I think it was really smart I think that he did that I don't think I ever really like fully appreciated before is that he gives when we just know claw door and we don't know he's a pirate yet he still makes him and ticket antagonistic so we kind of start to see what the conflict is and we say okay so this is what this arc is about is that he needs to convince this butler that he's good enough for something like that. And so this butler is maybe an antagonistic force if not the main villain but you know it makes us not look at this guy and be too suspicious of him because we kind of think we already know how in what way he's going to be functioning in the story and then when we find out that he's a pirate it's like it it becomes a much more interesting revelation I think.

And so I just I thought that was really kind of cleverly done and I do remember the first time reading this being really like how this is spoilers never mind but yeah well get the very interested being very interested in the way that he pushes up his glasses you know and then and the way that that like turns into something else was very like satisfying that like I still do that sometimes yes it's. Every every time because there will be times where instead of pushing my glasses with my fingers i'll do it with my palm and every single time I do that. Even if it's I mean I never do it like because I want to be like Kuro but I think of Kuro every time it's pretty cool though it's like this it's a very good example of one of Oda like without knowing the context even like Oda is like. What a weird quirk this guy has that's like yeah kind of cool but kind of weird and especially with the two hands when he and also like couldn't he just fix his his glasses a little bit.

I feel like sometimes you like feel like you're not entirely getting the joke like it's some sort of inside joke that Oda is is making where he thinks this is funny tons of characters that he does that with. Or that over the fact that you're something yeah. Yeah so I love that about him it's it's like okay he's such a weird like he could be a very basic butler character but he has the strange way of pushing up his glasses and he's got poops on his shirt which is that the sort of shorter very fun yeah. Addition Kuro also he knows about that. In Japanese Kuro has and it's not like super overdone but he does have a recurring way of speaking where he when talking to Kaya like in Japanese it's like if you want to say like no I'm good you say like Kekko this like and he.

When saying like oh it's like fine if like just as long as you understand that's enough for me he keeps saying like nani nani Kekko like. What's the other one like even like when talking to Kaya where is it. At the end like he's just sort of like. I know what you're I know when you're talking about I think that yeah yeah I don't know what page it is for you but it's yeah it's like it's like. It's like. What car as a yeah it's like. Like it's okay. Like like it's okay with me even if you don't understand where I'm coming from with us up like but he when talking to Kaya specifically he keeps saying Kekko Kekko which I found really interesting yeah yeah I think.

Odda is there a cat has a very. Not a I mean we see a little. No but I like I like where you're coming from. Neco and. Neco Kekko. Yeah. Neko desu. I think yeah I think it's a stretch but I like it. And then unfortunate thing about these early translations the kind of pre-Steven days and maybe even pre a lot of. And a lot of the speed up people but like is I think that they were kind of smoothing out a lot of the stuff that was like well this is weird I don't know why he would write it this way I'll just write it a normal way you know whereas now like Stevens really great about embracing those. Quirky speech patterns and stuff I'm sure Stephen would be like the first to say though like well at this point I guess you knew what was going to happen a little bit into the future but like. When you're writing without knowing what happens next sometimes you have to make that split second decision okay is this just a weird thing he's saying for no reason or is there like a purpose to it.

Yeah which is a 50 50 with Odda like it really is. Yeah it is like the the. One interesting choice is like the constant um. edition of like piratey language which is not yeah it's so in this volume. Apple and Coro talks to us crew on the last page um he calls them what's he call them see wolves which it can't see. Japanese like lean into a can't do it into a feline not a canine like what are you doing that's not in the Japanese I was wondering. Do we know there's a cat on his jolly Roger in the in the panel right next. Yeah okay I was wondering about that line because I was like you know I saw that I'm like see wolves come on be a cat at least like that's lean into the. Yeah. What does he actually say? Japanese just calls yeah yeah do you know thank you all.

You guys yeah. Jerks. Yeah so yeah. Plus you see that I appreciate it. They appreciate it. They appreciate it. They appreciate it. You're going. Sorry. I this is I feel like rereading this gave me a kind of more of appreciation for Coro that I never had but um what I was talking about earlier about like Guymon being a really great. Like representation of like pirate stuff because of the treasure chest and whatever a great thing about Coro is that his plan is kind of like. Antithetical to Oda's ideal pirate it's like yeah this it's almost anti adventure you know and so in that way it's like really spelling out like what the series is about is like. This is not the kind of guy we like so so the East the East blue is really. Setting the foundation for one the type of pirate Lufias into what treasure is to everyone means something different so for buggy treasure is treasure like come on jewels and stuff for Guymon.

There was the treasure was animals the animals and yeah what he discovers and we'll get more in the spoiler zone with that. Um it's the one guymon think and um in Coro's case and every time I read this I appreciate Coro more. Um the it's I want to just it's the uh what's the guy's name in um Giorgio part four. Um the either of you I don't know if you're. I've seen it I don't know which guy you're talking about. It's the main bad guy uh where he just wants to he just wants to be left alone and uh have an easy life. Um and that's really what Coro wants he's like but it's the most both usop and Coro uh interestingly or the most pragmatic. Characters in this series like or at least up there where it's just like how would I deal with this in real life if I were thrust into the situation.

And if you were Coro it's like okay I want to make a lot of money what should I do? Rob a bunch of people uh and kill them or well this this plan is ridiculous and we could get there. Yeah I don't know if this plan is pragmatic is the word that I would. But it comes from a pragmatic frame of mind. Yes but it's setting up an easy life for him right you know is the idea. Yeah like what should you be trying to do you should be trying to get your pension. I've been calling him the 401k villain for a reason like he is uh he's just like I just want to have an easy life and retire and have money to do it you know healthcare is a lot I assume in this world um I doubt they have you know anything. Yeah I don't think they got it. Yeah. Yeah. Gold's important I'm sure so what better way than trying to actually inherit it from this person and gaining the trust of everyone around yeah whatever.

Play your strengths and for Usop um it's just like you should be scared of pirates coming you know like those that is scary um if you were a normal person in that situation you would be scared if you saw that anyway but there's also lead a troop of three kids that are suspiciously vexed vegetable related um yeah go ahead. I've always thought it's like an interesting I mean Usop is full of contradictions which is part of what makes him such a human and character you know but like the the contradiction between him in this volume being like the pirates are coming and I'm using this to scare the town with the fact that he is genuinely proud that his dad is a pirate like before he even knows like and Luffy tells him like oh yeah your dad would say all about that.

Yeah I think that's next volume that gets closed right that loop or maybe the one after. Yeah but still it's like the fact that even without knowing that his dad is like on this important pirate chip or whatever he's just like proud that his debt to be the son of a pirate even in the most general sense um I've always yeah I've found that contradiction interesting there's a lot of there's a lot happening in Usop psyche. Well I don't know if this is a spoiler so this is borderline spoiler. It's tough to yeah it's tough to talk about without going into volume four. Yeah and it's like you could probably start inferring why Usop is yelling that at this point even um but I'll save that for the discussion for volume four or five. Was there anything before we head into that zone? Oh can can I mention the speaking of non-pro

pragmatic Django um I like I remind me of all the reasons why I'm like oh I see why Alex loves this character um this is so far my favorite entrance of a character not just the Michael Jackson thing but because he's like who is this weird guy I'm not weird and then proceeds to do a bunch of weird things um and his the whole thing with the plan was actually I think excellently adapted considering this time frame but what was it specifically let me get it he calls it yeah go ahead. Operation murder mischia yeah and that holds yeah operation that's what it was and then Lupe and Usop wait did they just say murder mischia um it's a very funny um like leaning into oh don't say murder it sounds a sinister accident yeah miss kaya has an accident um yeah it's very funny uh I think you started to mention this earlier exact but I think the

hardest I laughed during this whole volume is where uh the Usop pirates think that Lupe 8 yes they're captain yeah uh and uh yeah and the and Zoro is like aviator so it made me laugh so hard yeah and then they keep blame they keep calling nami and ogris for some I don't know what how that's translated specifically but it's very funny like so before we get into this spoiler zone I want to note that Zoro in so for those who've had any familiarity with the live action is immediately kind of this bloodthirsty angry uh super serious self-serious guy who's dumb but you know that that's taken through but I think in the second series of the second season of um the live action they do a little bit better by him but he is so not that and I think the humor of him leaning into how serious and ominous he is and despite that saying really silly and stupid things or making a joke

like that is what makes Zoro so cool and endearing as a character early on and still um and god that Zoro is very funny in the few moments he appears in this volume he's not in it often but he is on the cover and this is an all-time recover I would be for this if we won't talk about the simple great it really is nothing to do with anything but it's a really really pretty looking cover um an early instance of Oda being like it's cool to put a pirate jacket on Luffy uh and it is and the wood grain on the ship is really beautiful um yeah yeah the the detail on that cover yeah all-timer I think like this is in my like top five covers of all of one piece and we're only at volume three so that's something um okay should we enter the place we've been avoiding entering kirsten joe that's head to the spoiler

the japanese version um there's an interesting difference between the japanese and the english and the english he says they say that the devil fruit was enchanted by sea devils which like oh yeah i forgot that i'm like i didn't take anything i'm reading seriously in that yeah but it's like knowing where we end up with at least devils um devils but at least like vagapunks theory about what a devil fruit is like this seems like kind nonsense right um what is it Japanese yeah is uh akuma no mi te no ah so like the devils of the sea umino akuma no kashin dot it like an impersonation of the devil of the sea an incarnation personification

impersonation is that is the word kashin and this is was this shanks saying it yeah this is shanks i mean i would also like the what i was um taking away from that at least is this is also an unreliable narrator like it's a kid taught it like shanks made a lot yeah yeah yeah and he's look he's not the authority on devil fruits um especially since he seems to be the one person who might still not have one so very much so or maybe that's why it is i think it it the the difference between being enchanted by a sea devil and impersonating a sea devil is pretty big uh it's the kind of thing where it's like when you're translating this back in the day uh it doesn't seem as big as it seems now um

um especially now where we are given vague of punks uh theory about devil fruits being uh what what does he say like being devil fruits being like things that people have dreamed about yeah for themselves like what but people have dreamed human evolution could be but then also meaning to become someone's jacket to look there's someone with that kink poor sure especially in the world one but it's the same thing as a dream don't look down on somebody's dreams don't thought you were gonna say something else somebody dreams somebody dreams to be a jacket i also think an important thing to keep in mind when you talk about these old translations is that they also had an english adaptation person on top of this translation so

it was actually kind of going through a game of telephone where somebody who doesn't even yeah possibly know Japanese is just seeing a translation from somebody and then kind of making it more flowery and comic bookie yeah um as was the style of the time um i think that's also probably where a lot of these weird flourishes came from it isn't even a matter of like translation as much as it was kind of like someone being like well how how can i make this sound a little more fun and peppy you know i'm hoping it puts a little too much flavor on it was this the last of the zoro our volumes that Joey that as far as you're aware i think so as well i want to see if we could get a chance to have a chance to talk to some of these folks because i'm like super curious that's how like shame them because it's a completely different time and we very much understand that and i i should be clear i'm not like yeah i'm i'm not like a

like a vibing the translator for their choices at all we've had it's a so Andy Nakatani did the translation at the time and we've definitely had him on and he was a big um he was he's a very nice guy i do remember that um and he's like editor in chief i think he's i think he's editor in chief now um the supervising editor Jason Thompson we've had on um he edited the first few volumes and i know he was the one who told us that they like had a physically cut and paced in the sound effects which you could totally tell and again that's just what things were like at the time um and lance castle man is a name i very much recognize but that's who did the adaptation and i can't recall off the top of my head um why i but i would be very curious to talk to like comic book writers yeah lance castle man i and like but it's i would listen to four kids flashback i was sister podcast also

to talk about like a lot of the reason some of these decisions are made on a creative or sometimes corporate level to like you know um adapt things this way especially during the the early odds yeah go ahead so i mean i think it's the kind of thing where it's like i can easily see like being at at the time it's volume three and thinking that there's no major difference between impersonation and enchantment right like fair enchantment enchantment sounds more fantasy yeah it's all it's all like here's a four folklore like you know it isn't at the time no big deal it's the kind of thing that like because this series has gone on for 30 years and we are at a point where we have met the devil fruit

uh the devil does the devil's fruit like the difference between yeah the difference between uh enchanted by sea devils and impersonation of sea devils now feels interesting uh that's that's just chance right i i i am sticking by the unreliable narrator giving plausible deniability to odour which is something he is always grasping at i feel like plausible deniabilities is middle name um it's a long middle name um but like i like there's a lot of the stuff in the flashbacks so we have like really we have the and a lot of the um i mean this is Roger ship is this other like small or what a small world um sort of moment that i don't know like how i feel about that in retrospect um i mean sure uh it was pretty fun seeing gaban on their tits that's right now

as where we where we are in you know sitting here in in late 20 20 late 20 26 um it is it is nice um look at him with those two axes yeah they're really they're all very adorable too and we get a lot of reprise of this in the oh uh the Odin flashback i think yeah with the north pole south pole discussion um the other is was there anything else with the shanks uh buggy stuff because there's one other thing i want to mention some of them i think it's just notable that this thing of taking current day characters and then seeing them as little kids is a like kind of reoccurring thing that becomes a bigger and bigger part of the series and it's kind of notable i mean you know you're going to get that with the main star hats like zoro's flashback was before this and stuff like that but like the fact that you're gonna get like basically like full life stories for all these side characters as well yeah uh this is kind of the beginning of that which is notable i think yeah this is this is the

size guy mon this is the one of the first flashbacks that are like not straw hat focused um but shanks is pivot at this point yeah the other the other small um thing in this flashback that's like you know one of those like the the the Japanese wording uh became a little more accidentally relevant to over time um is uh when shanks is talking about um all make time to see the world and i'll do some pirating along the way of course like the the English is sort sort of makes it seem like uh like yeah i'll do some pirating along the way um the japanese is of course as a pirate which now that we know yeah exactly now that we know that uh you know yeah with the shamark

stuff yeah that's interesting yeah you would reiterate that yeah interesting yeah like why you've mentioned that yeah and and knowing also that like after uh gold broadger gets executed shanks kind of like upon intended throws in the hat for a little bit you know um yeah actually we yeah we don't know the full effects and circumstances but yeah um but it's kind of like it's not a guarantee that this person would be a pirate but yes kind of yeah resolved to be yeah and obviously um the life of a pirate is for him um and that that is also a theme of esplu like the what it means to be a pirate in this world um it might be different than how your preconceived notions going into the series um um i also wanted to talk about usop's fables coming to fruition um and which i was trying to pay

extra attention to this time um so for long time readers know that like that has been a thing a thing that has been happening immediately i think we've had you know as soon as we were introduced up they were starting to come to be um first of all he needs 80 million uh 79 million 900 something thousand more men um but the goal fish we know that's a little garden um the goal fish poop was movies salad which uh it doesn't really count but um the little people wait can you can you explain that because i'm i'm trying to wreck my memory i don't know if i've seen movies i think that one had goal fish poop island right did that one have that that was the one with the mech mechanical thing but wasn't there like a goal fish poop related thing or am i thinking maybe movie six also actually called giant goldfish in the hoesoda movie um i don't know it's been

i've seen that movie once and it was a very long time ago um so uh let me get the exact wording which i'm sure is not the real wording in the Japanese but he says well also the legendary mole trying to enter the i remember that we did recently do our cover story rankings and there is a legendary mole in the um uh katsatsu cover story so that does happen although not specifically to us up but that is a thing um well here it is i ch uh so he says with the goal fish although we don't get the full story what did you do to the goal fish well i chopped it up and took it to the land of little people they're still eating it to this day and after such a glorious feat the people called out to me captain um we have seen little people so that's a thing and i do like i assume coincidentally little people was the term used in the vis here and for the tonetadas

later on um i think there were other potentials at the time um so that just works out i don't know if that was on purpose he's just too humble to assume that the little people would not just call him god that's right that's sure he is too humble he's definitely that um i'm seeing if there's any other ones that are in this one he has so many more to come um were there any other spoilery stuff like this feel like this volume generally is less heavy on that except for the the buggy stuff at the beginning yeah i mean i the things that i had kind of marked is that for the going back to gai mon the funny animals uh reminding me a strong world um it's kind of this like um it's up smaller thing that odol loves to do is kind of mash up animals and do funny animal

designs and stuff like that um and this is kind of an early example of that um luvi asking gai monda join is a kind of uh that would suck out of me uh you know i think people put a lot of weight on luvi asking people to join that maybe they don't they shouldn't put that much weight on because he's asked we always say he asked the tree to join at one point well that would have been a good choice that's beyond us well sure they all would have been good choice but does anyone swan the what the ship you know everyone on the ship would look like if if everyone said yes except for the straw hats like if the straw hats all said no but the reject like the reject ship basically yeah oh i that's a great idea that i should commission um yeah no i yeah yeah go ahead i mean it's like looking will be on that ship soon yes he will it is like at luvi it is a cornerstone of luvi's character that he is a good judge of character

that's what it is yeah so it is like whoever whoever gets asked to be a straw hat it like it's not gonna be full of like villains and nare duels but he also likes to ask weirdos as the tree i think at this point it is more like are you a misfit with a herd of gold that i think is cool um or has a quality about them that is admirable like that is like luvi isn't thinking oh on my ship i need it blank so i need a man in a treasure chest so you should come along um like either that is definitely what like the other part people in the crew are for like when when he's going to get trying to get zero on the crew for example there's no role he has for him in mind and it's zero i think who's like we kind of need an navigator because you know i don't want to use

me as an navigator i know i'm really good at getting around usually but i'm still the same i think i like swords um but nami is the one who then suggests the boat and you know like each it's luvi's not thinking of the roles except musicians and only when musicians and cook i think and that's only when prompted um like he's like oh yeah i guess i need that he's just wants some cool funny weird friends on his ship he wants a ship of like guy man is on a island of weird animals he wants a ship of weird people and today he has that um it is interesting that when like usop asks to join at the restaurant and they're all like no yeah that was interesting um sorry looking at the rabbit snake which is freaky looking um that is interesting especially coming right after he asked guy man to join the crew right jordan that is very cold like poor usop that

if that doesn't make you feel for usop but i guess he's also saying like as captain yeah he does say sort of explain why they had such a strong reaction yeah because they said i mean i don't know what the japanese was this is you're looking for crewmate that's right well i'm your man i'll be your captain and they all say no thanks to that um so they're not really to be fair they're not saying no thanks to him being a on the crew um they're saying no thanks for him being a captain which also reminded me of one other god i think onion pepper and um carrot really steal the show in this volume because i like them a lot they're all saying yeah i like captain he's a medler i like the captain because he's so bossy i like the captain because he's so boastful is very cool it is yeah he's got a lot of good yeah they're very funny with the straw hats um yeah i i know Greg uh in the past has said like the first moment in japan

besides the arm on shanks that like a lot of japanese fans like weeped at and was like emotional for is one that i think we as american uh or western readers don't think about it that's the disbanding of the usa pirates at the end of this arc um and i'm curious how that's gonna am i gonna help get ready to tear up on this one like it's hard when you like know that too so i apologize for spoiling that but like well it's the spoiler zone it is the spoiler zone so i've allowed yeah i'm curious how that uh you know uh comes comes comes about for me uh if if i'm like gonna have an emotional reaction or not when i read volume is that five this is a longer arc i know than you would think because i think there's at least one full volume devoted to this i think five is when this one ends um i think i think fans

perspective on usop is an interesting thing because i think it often follows this arc where people don't like him very much at first and i think part of that has to do with his sort of obnoxious personality and and what we were saying about his character design like an emotional person and ugly people yeah but like yeah you know and that just looks different quote unquote uh you know i think a certain kind of shown in manga reader is also not going to be attracted to somebody who's like not doesn't have cool powers or whatever uh but but he really like wins people over in a way throughout the series that i think is really great and and and he becomes this kind of judge i feel like i hear this a lot from people who are like oh you know who my favorite straw hat is uso and they it's like let me blow your mind here because but i i think that um he's he really like represents that kind of human level perspective and i think he he is the heart of the series in some ways um uh and so i think he's a really great character but i do find it interesting this early on

that he's often won that a lot of people kind of have an issue rubbing up against a bit um i i feel like i don't know and maybe i'm like reading even too much into this but i feel like i mean it comes up on the podcast a lot that usob is often kind of playing the role of the reader he's breaking the sort of fourth wall and like the fact that you meet usob and you don't initially like him and i mean i don't know really is that a self-examination sort of thing? that's where i was going what's that you spoiled my insight dammit i'm sorry this is the spoiler zone it is i had to yeah it is the spoiler zone but yeah it's like and i mean i don't know i was earlier just like going on about how the initial how kind of unlikeable he is in those first pages

and child like he is in those first pages so i kind of did it too but i do feel like there is something there of like it makes you a little uncomfortable to see something so kind of like not within all the shown-in tropes right something that feels a little more grounded and like you or like people you know and there's maybe a little friction uh within the reader when confronted by that in this fantastical shown-in series yeah like what are you doing here yeah what am i doing here yeah uh what am i doing here no i i i a hundred percent agree i think i mean i think i the thing is i think my negative opinions on usob are really more my negative opinions on this arc like specifically i don't think they do him justice in any version i'm beyond i mean i'll have my final thought on the manga when we finish the arc but

like usob really doesn't get to shine very well in his introduction in his introductory arc in any in any of the versions i think worst of all in the live action like in that usob i think is perfectly usob in the live action in that he is this like likeable like but also like oh i think a waste way more swath and cool than i am and uh and also i mean Jacob is amazing like he's a fantastic usob but he is i think he was really underserved in the first season and and actually the second season he was one of the highlights for me so but i think that it was such a missed opportunity for him not to have been served so much more in season one i think right he should be the heart of this arc that we're in and he's not like i thought it was a very enjoyable take the one that they did

haunted mansion sort of weird thing um but i think the problem is that usob is not he's so secondary to everything that happens there um yeah and that is so not the case in the manga or even the anime or in any other iteration even though usob has faults in all of those versions as well and is not really able to shine i think as he should um but i'm curious to see kind of might take away of usob after this reread specifically um i i mean like i think of him much more sympathetically like in this specific readthrough for whatever sex scene for me the scene with clawador just it is wrenching into him yeah i don't like remember that scene that's the thing exactly yeah maybe

that's why it was so effective but like it is it is it makes you pissed and which is supposed to like yeah it's i think one of the like the fact that he punches him like that's what luffy would do and and the two of them get along all like immediately like you could see how they're such kindred spirits um they they have a very similar i mean they're very different in many ways but they're also like just these um i mean they're obviously connected through yassup and shanks but there's it's they are brotherly immediately and it's really just heartening to see and the fact that he punches clawador is such a luffy isn't for a guy who is clearly so afraid of like who he is and and how he's able to exist in this you know in this universe um he's such a i love usop there and it's what you said uh Joey it used to be the oh do you really

read one piece then what do you think of usop like that's kind of your litmus test i don't think that's as uh there's no cache a behind that anymore i don't think i think the the mainstreamer vacation of one piece i think everyone knows now the secrets out usop's pretty damn fun um and i think there's some a lot more kind of like blaringly obvious great stuff like the god usop stuff like so good like grabs and so good king yeah stuff like that really grabs you where i don't know i know i maybe i was trying to think of like his first like really great he has great moments in this arc for sure i think maybe our long park is where i maybe first really kind of had a like hilly egg usop moment i think if it does anything a paradea that's like of note and i can't nothing comes to mind i don't think so um that's very much like i mean aside from sanghi like zoro is the also the non-sanghi star of paradea yeah yeah um i would also add uh i love the i'm

getting this disease uh thing is a great running joke and it continues to this day i think oda so we have a few running jokes that like really start here zoro sleeping which i feel like it's used less that has drinking these days both good um um fan of both and yeah in this this is also in the guy mon chapter yes it's like we have an issue we don't have meat and so i was like we have an issue we don't have booze that's true like these characters are so defined that they're they're running jokes start here and they don't really change and that's one of like the great things about the sweeping epic that is one piece that you're able to do this over 30 real time years um yeah lufi nami being nami i think but um uh the usop has a lot of those running gags immediately and that oda still deploys you know regularly um trying to think of there there

there were definitely a few here even even buggy which doesn't get through in the localization i'm sure oh you were talking about the voles with his devil fruit and they do define them and impel down as which is i think what you were alluding to the thing i was looking for it in this where yeah his feet have to be on the ground and stuff like that i was like i wonder if that's like was in notice head and he just hadn't communicated it i was like i don't think so i think he was just kind of screwing around and doing what was fun on the page but he did yeah because they were on the ground and he notices them and that's why he tickles them um yeah i think it's definitely was something i bet you that this one of the things odas like i'll explain that in sbs but then he come came back later and actually was like oh that's make this thing relevant he does that he does do that thing all the time it's like this quirk for a character i haven't shown you in 30 volumes i'm gonna make a thing in this one or did did crocodile have one like maybe how he got his good

garments and impel down from the new comma land folks um i don't know i don't know was there anything else i feel like that might be it for volume three for me yeah i mean my big takeaway is like this is an okay volume i think it's it's like kind of the end it's it's a weird spot where it's the end of one arc in the beginning of the other and so it's kind of this real middle ground but um you know but i like those early arcs um don't love them as much as later arcs but they're they're the foundations of what make one piece great and and i really do love that guy mon arc for a number of reasons that we've talked about to death at this point but yeah i i i had a good time talking about him and revisiting it for this recording i completely oh kerson go ahead sorry no it's gonna i completely agree i feel like of the three volumes that we've done it's probably the weakest overall but it's still a lovely romp so i forgot we're supposed to be

ranking these right i also forgot about that i forgot that that was one of the thing i mean we were up to three so i think it's fair that we forgot um i think one two three is probably yeah fair all right yeah that's what i would i think that's what i would do two i thought two was way better than i remembered there was like a lot of really good discussion to be had out of two um but i also couldn't tell you specifically where they don't start in there was all orange town right it was all the buggy stuff um i mean shushu happens and shushu happens like that's gonna be very good it's just one is one you know how could you beat the original you know uh right and one is also very like self-contained to there's a lot of like it is it feels very it's own thing yeah it has an arc to it it does that first chapter of one piece is just like kind of perfect yeah it is and it's like 70 pages so it's

a that one's a third of the volume this one was like a fifth i think of this one but um okay why don't we uh take a break and round off this by the book college football is back so hilton called him me the superstition concierge to make your fan rituals a reality need a room to match your lucky number we got you want to make sure our team doesn't wash your lucky jersey oh that smells lucky hilton's unmatched hospitality can keep up with any superstition even a marching band wake up call it 555 and 55 seconds hit it when you need a team that will do whatever it takes on game day it matters where you stay hilton for the stay this episode is brought to you by northstrom for 125 years northstrom has been part of your story the stylist who found the perfect outfit for your big interview the first pair of walking shoes for your one year old the tomato soup you shared with your sister at the cafe these are

I think we have one yeah so yeah they should be listening oh we have two we have two um one of them so we recorded volume two prior to the passing of mikmyk furland who played um buggy the clown in the funimation slash crunchy rolled dub uh for one piece and it was the 80 r director we did a tribute episode to him which we highly suggest you check out it's a titled ever special 23 um which we also feature some of our older

interviews with him which i'm too afraid to listen to because of me but uh you should definitely give a listen uh so our first is related to that uh is from quintuple schlep patch and remember you could submit your questions if you are a patreon subscriber on our discord channel so for volume two or three uh in honor of mikmyk furland i'd like to hear your favorite things about each iteration of buggy the clown that we've seen that means mik furland shigeru kibba jeff word even david willis if you have an opinion about him i do not uh i think buggy i just don't remember it i think buggy is one of the best characters in the series and there are so many ways to view him shank's ex a joker pastiche roger's fail son and usop foil even though they've never even they still haven't met a pathetic dreamer try hard want to be the luckiest guy in the world or odys chute toy so yeah where your buggy takes wow i just yeah buggy and usop haven't met huh i just realized that

god i hope that happens interesting maybe they're the same person never seen that same shigeru kibba is one of my favorite voice actors yes he's a genius a genius jester he's um he's he's great going back i mean probably earlier than this but uh his work as the narrator on fist of the norstar yeah where he gets progressively crazier and crazier as the as the series goes on it's the only reason i rewatch that series was oh i could watch when you said that sentence like him getting more and more on him just as it goes on i'm like yes and he is like i forget he could be serious like well because he can he does he has a low like he has a low voice that he can do and oh he even he plays the bad guy i was thinking of in jojo's bizarre adventure part four he plays kira who kill that totally different yes performance yeah and he even appears in person in a two percent i show he's great he is

cool he's incredible and so he's who i tie in with my idea of buggy i'm i'm not really much of a dub watcher so yeah experience with mike mcpharlane is actually as a guest on the one piece podcast and he always had a really great rapport with you guys and i enjoyed hearing him on the show um and enjoyed hearing about uh because he was a voice director as well right so i kind of like hearing about that side of things yeah more so than the actual performance stuff um so i you know it's very sad to hear about his passing and as for the live action show this is what i will say is when i first saw images of what he looked like in the live action show i hated it um because he looked like it's sort of like jokerie i i don't really like that kind of like smudged makeup look uh and it looked like he was a little bit trying to be too much of a like hearted buggy or something like that

but then the charisma of that actor really like uh rubbed off on me and and made me like love his performance and you know we we make a lot of like kind of snarky references to them throwing in some swear words here and there um which i do kind of roll my eyes out a little bit but he pulls it off really well because that actor is just really really charming and yeah that's really what you're doing i think uh leans on it a little too much but yeah yeah he's great and i i agree i agree about the the joker makeup i it's not it's not what i would have chosen but yeah i Jeff Ward is fantastic it's so hard like a job of selling it how do you like westernize basically the that character without having a joker like even if it's on a purpose it's gonna be associated so it's like how do you yeah it's like what are you gonna do are you gonna do joker are you

gonna do penny wise like yeah look at super crisp clown makeup would also look weird you know it's not meant to be seen this way so for me i'm just not a clown person i don't have like a clown phobia like jay michael tadeem but i i don't get it like i don't get the clown thing like i know it's a thing i know people have it um but like so the thing i love most about buggy the character have been the voices like absolutely so like shigeru chiba uh and i'm like i went back a few years ago and watch your haka show in the sub and it's like mario mitanaka uh tanaka shigeru chiba and it playing kua barra and it's just perfect like i love that dub but that sub is phenomenal and don't like if i i think like i know steve is you know mr. yu haka show i don't think he's seen the sub and he needs to because it is just like all mvp's in that uh i didn't realize that she got a

root chiba i mean i'm just going through his behind the voice actors right now and it's all just like oh he plays that guy yeah he's always uh he played in dragon ball he was p-loft of course like of course that makes sense um who is he in this he's hojo professor hojo in the final fantasy seven live series i forgot he was rat it's um that's perfect wait in pat la boar in pat labor whatever the tv series you played shigeo shiba and is this the live action show i think that's another one that he always hears it no no no no no that's an anime i think it's the anime i'm looking at wikipedia so take these with green so so any plays what show is this not soon nagu oh it's commissioned by kuma moto for the free free okay it's like a because he plays shige chiba but that might just be uh um

i haven't i've read some of jiu jitsu kaisa and i have not watched it but yeah i'm sure the one is jk i'm sure that's a i'm sure he's amazing yeah yeah but i would never have guessed he's very like serious and low voice he could do that though that's the thing i had no idea the thing that's great about him is he is he could pivot that so quick like he's both the low voice guy and he's the high pitched yeah like what i'm watching yeah he's in the japanese dub of the sheep detectives oh good i like that oh that's tempting you know what i have to see i we always we used to do this with seyu all the time is to see like what live action simsins or sin felt like a lot of who i think kinamon was sin felt like i think that was the main thing we can't amount from before

uh somehow makes sense yeah oh it makes sense oh yeah he didn't want to be a pirate um again it's sin felt coming back that's full circle we have one more question though uh this is a long one though okay fine i got a ice half her half nacity or which is ice fissure tenacity i'm sure that has to do with something but i'm a big fan of geography both real and fictional me as well so that works um that's the end of the question now one piece's geography is pretty infamously bizarre in the best way possible it's so unique that i wanted to understand it but i had so little to go off of that i'd usually come to the wrong conclusion specifically in regard to the red line grandline and the planet as a whole at first glance many fans myself included would assume that the grandline to the grandline to be blue planets equator and the misconception that person that persists even to this day thankfully as more evidence has emerged i came to another interpretation that the red and grandlines intersect with an ink like this

with an inclination at a 45 degree uh 45 degrees at the equator i like the idea of the entire planet evoking a treasure map the x marks the spot but it didn't take law uh take long for logical holes to emerge one oh was squeezing all prior islands too close to mario i had to shake off my initial assumptions so with my current imagine globe he has diagrams here um which i am not i can't show at the moment but maybe i could sense a delineate if she wants to um i now understand how little relevance the equator and prime meridian had prime meridian being the longitudinal center um had on the orientation of the two lines even at the points uh they uh intersect i think is what he meant it feels rather counter-attuitive to have some of the north blue within the southern hemisphere and vice versa that is something that's always annoyed me uh and wouldn't you know what right here in volume three it's been depicted in that way from the very beginning so although since odor

didn't uh didn't include the equators and poles which are also mentioned in this volume uh i never gave his depictions of the globe much credence until now um that isn't to say odys cartography is completely flawless reverse mountain to i mean reverse mountain i think right there shows his cartography god uh reverse mountain is often shown as a narrow part of the red line yet it's expansive enough to exceed the width of not just the ground line but both compelts um never less paradoxical environments like that make me chuckle it's one of the many reasons i've loved the one piece world do you have any geographic one piece opinions of your own that's a whole other episode um i could do a whole episode on that but it would just be me and maybe icefisher tenacity talking um i did i love this yeah this is amazing it's interesting um yeah i don't have any particular smart things to add uh especially compared to what icefisher tenacity said that was

much smarter than i could talk about i'll say when i'm my initial read through i am a geography be winner for my middle my high school high school middle school middle school um only a couple years after this volume came out um so obviously an authority on this matter um the north blue like the where they belonged always confused the hell out of me because um i always did think it was a plus at first because it's often shown like that i think of the anime in particular because like the combat were always those straight lines you know and they were never yeah um and it makes no sense why is the north just like the west yeah it doesn't it doesn't make sense um it has to be what it the uh the tilted version is the one that makes sense or the access the tilted axis which is the one yeah as as shown in the volume yeah nice

and what do you know there's uh gear five clouds at the around the whole world suspicious you know you know where else there were gear five clouds dragon ball you thinking new think Toriyama go to go to indeed i don't know how he did it i don't know he snuck into Toriyama's office through those in 90 in a year he was 10 i think when it came in um anyway i in my my response to this whole question is to quote a serious man please accept the mystery yeah i that's a running chokai to miss the mystery blank that loufi oh that oh it's a mystery man it's a mystery man yeah uh maybe we should all go in with loufies like that's the thing with the the commuted the one piece commuting in general i do love trying to do that but there's a part of me that's like i don't think odor really thought about that uh half the time at least i feel like that's the case um this one he might have anyway we'll find out if the north polar south pole is
