Drawing Outside the Lines: Winning the Stella Prize with a Graphic Novel

Award-winning cartoonist and graphic novelist Lee Lai joins us to discuss making history as the first author to win the Stella Prize for a graphic novel. In this conversation, we explore the evolving place of graphic novels in contemporary literature, the painstaking process of creating hand-painted comics, and the realities of sustaining a creative career.

We also dive into the themes behind their acclaimed work, including queer friendship, anger, personal agency, and the symbolism of magpies as witnesses to the story. From building a creative life in Montreal to navigating the attention that comes with major literary success, this is an insightful conversation about storytelling, community, and what it means to create work that resonates.
