Hit it! When you need a team that will do whatever it takes on game day, it matters where you stay. Hilton, for this day. What is up everybody? Welcome to another locked on crossover edition, locked on bulldogs, locked on comedors. I got Cory Burton from Lockdown Commodores. With me, I'm Daniel Monroe, host of Lockdown Bulldogs. Cory, it's another big week in the SEC, another big time match up in Athens. And this one, I feel like at least for George Translope, curious for Vandy Pants, I feel like for a Georgia Vandy match up, this one's got obviously, for obvious reasons, a little bit of extra juice to it with all of the off-season connections that these two programs had this past year. It's good to get together with you, man, how you doing tonight? Yeah, I'm great, man, it's always good to talk football, it's always good to connect, it's always good to do crossovers, Vandy, these things are fun.

I'm ready to go, I'm ready for a good game on Saturday, hopefully Vandy can come in and compete and do their thing and give Georgia a run and give Georgia a good test for BAMO. That's what I'm hoping for. It's, if we know anything about Clark Lee and this Vandy team, they might be on paper undermatched in some match ups, but I just don't think, Clark Lee's track record is big for itself, I just don't think you can ever take this Vandy team lightly. I don't think you can ever treat him like a warm-up game or something like that. It's not like, this John neighbors are a consultant team, you know what I'm saying? Cory, like it's not like it's that. Like we're not, nobody's in that level. All right, well let's get the, I want to get the Jeric Kerg stuff out of the way, because I actually think there's more interesting storylines in this game than that, but he might as well lead with the shiny thing. Yeah, absolutely. And for Jeric Curtis, I think honestly, as much time as he lapsed between him committing and now, I think both sides, I guess both sides are business as usual.

Jeric Curtis is trying to come in and win a game. He's banged up a little bit. He's listed this questionable officially, but I think he'll play. I'd be surprised if he did. I was going to ask you about that. Yeah, I'd be not a lot there. There's not a ton there. I think it's just him healing up from, I mean, he ran the ball. I think 18 times against Auburn. Yeah. Mostly scramble some design runs. He, I mean, he's, he's taken some shots, but you know, for Jeric Curtis for Kirby smart, like I think the fans, like what I feel like is the fans probably are more into this Jeric Curtis storyline than like Kirby is Kirby strikes me as he's business as usual. Like it doesn't matter who the quarterback is. It could be Jeric Curtis. It could be Tom Brady. It could be you. It could be me. Yeah. It could be Trinidad Chammiles, whoever it's we're going to attack you. We're going to play to a standard or we're going to make life hell for you, you know, throughout throughout the whole 60 minutes. And he wants to win the game. He wants to dominate the game and he wants to move on to the next one. And that's, you know, does he have a little extra Jews? I'm sure he's got a little bit, but like I don't think from a team perspective,

it's going to matter. But I think the atmosphere goes from where I think it affects it is the atmosphere goes from like a whole home. It's a new kickoff, right? It is a 1245. Yeah. 1245. Yeah. Yeah. So it's a 1245. And usually those games for Georgia fans, like those type of games against the Vandes and the, you know, the non-conference opponents of the world don't carry as much juice as like a Bama or a Tennessee or whatever type of game or even that Arkansas game that was a new kick that they jumped out to a 21 point lead, like within three minutes. Like that was crazy. But that was probably one of the most electric new kickoffs that I've ever seen. Yeah. And what game day was there? It was a whole different like that that day was a bit of a different animal. Yeah. Yeah. Well, I was going to ask you about that. So the, the, the off season storylines, you know, not withstanding. It's not to be about obviously Jared Curtis's ability to lead this offense.

He doesn't start week one, which I feel like was ridiculous. It was dumb. Yeah. It was. Let's just call it when it is. It was dumb. Yeah. I know your take on that. You've made that clear. And I think you were dead, right? On that. He's clearly the guy this year and in the coming years for this program. Big physical kid. You mentioned the runs versus Albert. I mean, I think some of that by design, I was going to ask you how much design run do you think? Clearly in the office will employ in this game to try to mitigate some of what Georgia can do. Obviously, you know, with an extra weapon in the run game. And then, you know, he went on the road last week. But, you know, and that's a big time environment at Auburn. But how ready do you feel like he is for a, you know, number two team in the country? You know, big time environment on the road. Just as an 18 year old true freshman.

So where do you, how do you feel like they'll use him on Saturday? And then how do you feel like he's, is he built for that kind of moment right now versus like maybe in the future? Yeah. Against Auburn. I thought to answer your question about is he ready? Like I thought he was ready against Auburn. Like that was a win-able game. He, like it's in the first, in the first couple series, he was a little nervous. You could tell he's a little jittery and that's probably how he'll be against Georgia. But once he gets settled in, like he's got the talent he can make to throw. He's just got to get settled in. He's got to get hit a couple of times. Like he's one of those type players where once he gets hit and once everything kind of rolls, he's comfortable, everything else around and doesn't mean anything. So I, I think he's ready for these type of atmospheres. Now, as far as the, as far as how he's going to be used, I would love to see the coaches just say, here's the keys. Let it go. Let's, let's let you run the offense full scale. I, they're not there yet. I think the coaches are more nervous about this than he is. And that's, I mean, obviously that's concerning. But you want to see him open up the offense down the field.

You want to see him make rhythm throws, run the offense with a little bit of tempo and try to get Georgia on their heels at some point. Now that's, that's a tough task, no matter how you slice it, dice it because Georgia's defense is unbelievable. But you would like to see from a confidence standpoint that he can go in there and do the best he can and, and try to attack this Georgia defense down the field, short intermediate, quick, you know, just try to, just try to get them on the move. And if he can do that, I mean, it gives him a chance. But like I said, like Georgia should be the number one team in the country. So you, you take that for what it's worth and you just, you just roll with it, go out there do the best you can. But if you play scared, like I think against Auburn, they were super conservative. I think wasted a half, they wasted a turnover because they got an interception. They wasted that turnover where they could have gotten points and they didn't. They got a punt block on special teams. If that happens, then Georgia can really name their score at that point.

But they just got to, I think the operation is just got to be smooth and it's just, it starts with coaching, honestly. Like, and this is odd to say from a Clark Lee team, they need to just, they need to be able to start faster. They just need to be more aggressive mindset, not necessarily like sending the house on every play or throwing deep every play, but just that tempo, get him, try to get you on your heels and try to put the pressure on you and see how you respond. Obviously Georgia will respond really well. Yeah. And I think you see in that even some of the similarities between a Clark Lee, yeah, Clark Lee and a Kirby smart, obviously two elite defensive pedigree coaches. But with pretty similar football philosophies, right? They're both inherently conservative. They're both inherently of a mindset. I don't want you to lose me this game. More than I want you to go out there and feel like you can win me this game. Both of them are happy to play typeball games in a phone booth, let it come down, you

know, to the end, just, you know, keep yourself in it type of mindset. But I think you're right, Corey, that like, that works to a certain extent, depending on the roster that you have. But when you're a big underdog in a game, at some point, you got to let it fly. And so it'll be interesting to see with that experience last week that you mentioned, does, do we see a shift in the Vandy offense? Like do you see them open it up a little bit more? And then what are the results on that? Because we'll get to predictions at, you know, in a bit, but like it's a 24 and a half point line. And so it feels like Clark Lee can cover this number pretty easily. By keeping his cards real close to his chest, you know, like in play and roll conservative, but they probably can't win the game if they do that. No, but if you open it up, you open yourself up to, you know, the possibility of a major upset, but also the possibility of blow out. So it'll be interesting to see like which direction he choose. Yeah. I think, I think unfortunately, I think he's going to be more of what you said at first,

kind of conservative, try to keep it, try to keep control of the clock and things. I think if you do that, it gets the team like Georgia, it's playing right into their hands because they did it against Auburn's playing right into their hand. Like Kirby smart wants you to play that way because that's how he's comfortable. What makes him uncomfortable, it makes a lot of these defensive guys uncomfortable, Clark Lee included is when you play with pace and when you kind of get them on their heels and they have like these guys are super sophisticated in their schemes, right? Like Kirby has, I mean, his mind is just going in a million different directions with his schemes. And he's got a lot in with him in Glenn Schumann. And there's been times where I've watched Georgia play and you see Glenn Schumann's over there doing this thing and the balls get ready to be snapped. And you know, they're just out of position. And like some of Georgia's touchdowns and some of the things that has happened to them negatively has been because they're slow getting the play in. And I think or teams that if teams can take advantage of that, they have a chance. But if they can't, then you just, you're just delaying it inevitable. I think if they play conservatively and try to control the clock, they'll get blown out.

I think if they go out swinging, they still make it blown out. But also they, I think they increase their chances of covering any of them. It's also shot to win at the end. Yeah. All right. Well, we'll be, we'll be back right after these. I'm going to like Corey asked me some UJ questions. I got some questions for him about the Vandy defense. So we'll get to all that in a moment. But first, these. First a message from our friends over at FanDuel. Welcome to the most rewarding NFL season ever only on FanDuel. So, Hilton called to me the superstition concierge to make your fan rituals a reality. Need a room to match your lucky number? We got you. Want to make sure our team doesn't wash your lucky jersey?

Ooh, that smells lucky. Hilton's unmatched hospitality can keep up with any superstition. Even a marching bandwink up call it 555 and 55 seconds. Hit it! When you need a team that will do whatever it takes on game day, it matters where you stay. Hilton, for this day. All right, Corey, that's... I asked you about Jared Curtis. I think I agree with you. It's a storyline for fans. I think once the ball snapped, you know, once it's kicked on Saturday, it becomes a lot less of a narrative. And the end, the guy had an opportunity to play and he went somewhere and he's playing. And he's playing well for the most part. And so good for him. Georgia seems to be just fine without him. I think everybody, you know, it's all just kind of a big deal as, you know, as a talking point in the offseason. But where do you want to go? What do you want to ask about this Georgia football team? What to you is an interesting storyline in this game?

Yeah, I mean, how unbelievable is it to still be 24 and a half point? Favorites when your best running back is questionable? Yeah. And not questionable, like Jared Curtis, this questionable, questionable as in. He didn't even dress out in the last game against Oklahoma. A game that obviously got lopsided really quickly. But, you know, Kirby and the coach yourself didn't know that before the game. Oklahoma's the number eight defense in the country. The best defense, statistically, the Georgia's going to play all season long. And so to go into that game without Nate Frazier, it's a pretty decent sized risk. And I mean, Clint and I talked about it a lot this week. My co-host and I hear on lockdown bulldogs. There's a pretty big drop between Nate Frazier and the next two backs. Chancé Bowens and Dwight Phillips are both talented backs. They do some different things and they do different things. Well, Dwight Phillips obviously has elite speed. You saw that on the long touchdown round. Chancé Bowens has probably become the best receiver out of the backfield

for Georgia. He's also a little bit of a hammer. He can get a really tough one or two yards. But neither of them have consistently shown the ability to make guys miss and generate explosive runs like Nate Frazier has. To be honest, I think this line has a lot more to do with the emergence of all the weapons in the Georgia passing game. More than it does the absence of Nate Frazier. Because Nate Frazier is still probably other than Gunner Stockton. The most important offensive skill player for Georgia. There's probably some offensive linemen that are more important than he is. I would say if I were ranking offensive skill talent, it would be Gunner One and Nate Frazier Two still. But there has been an emergence of guys like talentaylor, who's a true sophomore, showed a few flashes last year, but has looked really good on the young season. Craig Dandrich, who's a true freshman wide receiver, has looked really good, really fast.

And the ability to make some plays. And then, I mean, Cory, Georgia's just got some non-human looking people in the tight end room that are matchups. Nightmares. It's insane. It's ridiculous. The level of talent that Todd Hartley has stockpiled in this room. So I think the ability, Georgia can beat you in a lot of different ways. And I think the national media is kind of slow on picking up on that. Still kind of, oh, is this Georgia offense? Like they can't really hit explosive plays down the field. And Georgia just keeps doing it every week. You know, talentaylor caught three passes that traveled over 30 yards in the air on Saturday against Oklahoma. They continue to generate explosive plays in the past game and the run game. They continue to be really efficient, which is what really the staple of the Mike Bobo offense is efficiency more than explosivity. And that's why Georgia fans kind of hate him sometimes.

But efficiency this year is being combined with the ability to generate explosive plays down the fields. And that's to me the reason for this big number is that Georgia's not as predicated on the run game, Cory, as even I thought they would be coming into the season. I really thought they would be a really run heavy team with a talented offensive line, great big physical tight ends and a great backfield. I really thought Georgia would lean on that. I still think they want to do that, but they don't have to do that, which is an important distinction. Yeah, I mean, I think for Georgia, that's definitely, I mean, you get, and I think coming into the season because they got some new pieces and you know, you lose that Zachariah branch and you lose some other guys that you're just not sure what is going to happen. And Zachariah branch, I've been pounding the table on the Falcon side for them to get him more involved, man. That dude on a screen, that dude can lose you in a phone booth, man. And that's, that dude's unbelievable. Unfortunately for for Georgia, he's gone. But fortunately for the Falcons,

he stayed in the state of Georgia and he's still in the red black. And hopefully there'll be a bigger piece of what the Falcons do. But you know, like talent Taylor, Isaiah Canyon, who I think he's banked up too, right? He has been banked up, not a huge contributor coming over for Georgia Tech, but still the thought is he will become one. Yeah. Who's been the biggest surprise on this offense? Like what what's what guy do you like? Okay, I didn't expect him to come and be a be productive. I think everybody would say probably it's Craig Dandrich, who's sort of emerged as this true freshman guy who's the deep threat Georgia's second leading receiver. But to me, and I think Clint would agree with this, Sir Coby White Hilton has been kind of a revelation. He's returning punts for Georgia. They're using him a little bit in that Zachariah branch. Screen game, he's electric with a ball in his hands. He's got elite, make you miss, change of direction. And he's just he's he's solid. He's been really solid throughout the season. He is not

the most talented wide receiver on the roster. Coming into this season, I knew the Titan room was going to be what it is. And it's just a it's a foreheaded monster. Any one of them can beat you. They're going they're in 12 personnel all the time. Literally every play they're in 12 personnel, sometimes 13. Because these Titans are versatile. They can you know, they're matchup nightmares, every single one of them. None of that was unexpected. The thing about this Georgia team is, you know, 12 different guys have caught a touchdown pass so far this season. It's insane. And so no one's going to get any numbers this year. I mean, no one's going to generate any sort of like Jeremiah Smith numbers or whatever for Georgia. But the overall offensive production has been, I mean, Gunners numbers are crazy. I mean, the efficiency, the the ability to convert and the ability to make plays down the field. There's just too many different weapons. And right now, Georgia hasn't run up against anybody that's been able to slow them down. Right, right. And that's

that's crazy. I mean, that's why they're in the position they're in, obviously. But, Dana, I want to ask you about before we run out of time. I want to ask you about the defense. Like, where are the holes again in the defense? What can Jared Curtis in his offense try to attack? Like, where would you say is the, I guess in other words, where would you say is the area that you would be most concerned about on Georgia's defense? Well, there's no question about this. And it's not because Georgia's particularly weak there, but it's because there are no other answers. The weakness is thrown. You have to throw the ball down the field against Georgia. I know they have KJ in Boulder and they have Ellis Robinson. D'Amello Jones, I think, is in another really good corner that's opposite Ellis. But Kyron Jones at the other safety spot is a bit, you know, a bit of a question mark. Khalil Barnes coming over from Clemson this year playing the star of the nickel. He's he's been really good. He's been really solid for Georgia as a transfer, which has been nice because there's been some some need. But Georgia has been gotten down the field. Arkansas did it.

They got Georgia down the field. Oklahoma did it. They got Georgia down the field. Now, obviously John Matiers, a turnover machine and he also threw a pick to KJ Boulder in that game. But you can get Georgia down the field. If you can protect, they've been better at rushing the passer. If you can protect, you can get Georgia down the field. But Corey, you cannot run the football against Georgia. You just cannot do it. It is it is it's a fool's errand. And so Kirby, you know this. Khalil is the same way. Kirby wants to make you one dimensional and he has succeed. He will succeed with this team because there are not going to be many teams now. Obviously, we match up against Florida later in the year. They've got an elite running back, you know, old miss after that. Like there's some there's some there's some good ground attacks. But running the ball against the George offense is is not going to win you any games. And so to your point from earlier, I think that's where a conservative game plan is going to play right in the Kirby sands because you're just going to hit your head against a wall and you're going to end up

in third and long. And then you're going to put Jared Curtis in some bad situations. I think the way to attack. Yeah, go ahead. I was going to say yes, some situations where he, you know, that they're going to bring some funky stuff and he can't really do much about it. Exactly. Yeah. And you know the Glenn Schumann and Kirby smart. Regardless of what his name is, they see an 18 year old kid at the quarterback position on the other side. They're looking at the chops. They're excited, you know, to try to confuse him and to try to make, you know, make him, make some mistakes. And so I think you got to throw the ball early against Georgia. I think you got to try to look for opportunities down the field because it's tough to run the ball. We're going to come right back. I'm going to ask you some questions about the Vandy defense and what they look like this year. Give our final predictions and thoughts on what how this game's going to play out. So this Saturday, 12.45 between the hedges in Athens, I want to ask before we give predictions to get out of here. From my perspective now, if you've watched a ton of more Vandy football than I have this year, I everybody watched the last five seconds of the Vandy and C state game. And so, first of all, I can't believe we've made it this far without me saying congratulations on the craziest win in the history of college football. That's insane. Like how that

happened. I was already getting ready for my post game live. I already typed everything out, scheduled. The game was over. Yeah, I was about to go off, right? And then, you know, I get a couple of text messages. My text messages blow out not a couple form the couple. I get a phone call and everyone's like, oh my god, have you heard? And I'm like, what the heck? What like what? I thought there was a fight. I didn't know what the deal was. And then I turned on and I was like, oh my god, they won. Yeah, it's the most improbable win. Certainly that we're going to see all season now. So my question is from afar, I won't say that I feel like the Vandy defense has been bad. Obviously, you give up 31 points to NC State. That is the most notable, probably defensive laps that we've seen from Vandy this year, 21 to Auburn last week on the road. I don't think that's again, as you said, that's a winable game that if some things go differently,

Vandy's got a shot to win that game. Where do you feel like the Vandy defense is as compared to say last year under clerk Lee? Obviously, there was some, there's some personnel changes. There's some different guys out there. You know, it's going to be a different group. You sort of want to give clerk Lee the benefit of the Dow, but do you feel like it's been a significant step back on that side of the ball this year? From a roster standpoint, no. From a roster standpoint, it's better and it should be performing better, but it's not. It's taken a step back in philosophy. It's taken a step back in philosophy. And I'm not sure that Steve Gregory is right for the defensive coordinator job there. I think he's probably more of a fit for the NFL. And, you know, it is what it is. It's not, you know, anything about him personally. I just think, and I think he's a good coach. I think he knows a lot of ball, but I don't know that I don't know that it's jiving at Vanderbilt, but from a philosophy standpoint, they've probably been more conservative than they should be with the talent they have. Like they can take some chances,

and they haven't. But against Auburn, they played well enough to win. They only gave up 14 points because seven of those were it was a block punt. Oh, that's right. That's right. So they gave up 14 points on the road and with a takeaway. And so they gave they gave the offense chance after chance after chance. So I feel like they got better from NC State to Auburn. And I think it was a more attack mindset against Auburn, which was good to see. The tackling I wish would improve some because that's kind of what the culprit was. Like there was there was one series where they didn't attack the the the second Auburn touchdown. They didn't tackle well. They didn't cover well. They were lost. I think communication has been a big big issue. And then on the game ceiling drive where Auburn had to get a first down to in the game. Vanity had a chance to tackle them short of the first down marker and they couldn't and they ended up sealing the game. So from a defensive perspective, I it's been oh, it's been okay. It's been up and down. That's the problem. It's been

really good on some series, really bad on other series. And that you don't know which defense is going to come out at that point. So and I think that falls on Steve Gregory's feet and then ultimately at Clark Lee's feet. There's no reason of Clark Lee defense should look like that in year five. But yeah, to your point, I think the the the people to watch out for miles capers Brian Longwell, Martell Height, who I think is having a really nice season Ricardo Jones, I think has been, you know, I think he has a lot of potential. He's our Clemson transfer and free safety like he's haven't he, I think, Kaden Daniels is somebody that we got from South Georgia at a high school. Like he is going to end up being the best corner on the roster. So those are some names to watch out for. But philosophically, if they can come out aggressive, they can they can be disruptive. How disruptive is that's a different question, but they can be disruptive for sure. All right, well, I'll let you kind of we'll get out of here and let you give any sort of a

prediction that you want. If you want to give a score prediction or any gets the spread prediction or just sort of a broad strokes view of how you see this game playing out. How do you see things going in Athens on Saturday, Corey? Here's what I know typically with with UGA and because I also host SEC after dark and we talk about the entire conference. So I've had plenty of experience picking Georgia against the spread. And I know when they get a conference game or an opponent that has a little bit of juice in a big spread, not Oklahoma, not withstanding because that kind of broke the trend actually. But usually Georgia, they're they typically empty the bench, first of all. So that typically takes away a lot of possibilities of covering these big spreads. I think Vandy can keep it within three touchdowns. I think they can I think because of the way Georgia sub if Georgia gets up big early and they start pulling guys like there's a chance

like the backups could give up some some cheap points. So like from a against the spread situation, like I think Vandy can can cover and can kind of keep it keep it tight. A Vandy comes out firing all cylinders. They can keep it tight for a large part of the ballgame. But I do think they can cover. So I would take Vandy plus 24 and a half because I just think for Georgia, 12, 45 kickoff, empty the bench, give some guys a chance to play if they get up big early. I think lends itself to to a Vandy cover at the very least. And this is not a number that I touched at all. I was on that Arkansas number just for a couple weeks ago. I was on Georgia. You know, big. I really felt like there was there was a I was on it early and I really felt like there was an opportunity for Georgia to run that up and the cover. And then I felt good about them against the number last week against Oklahoma. This is not this feels like a different situation. It really does feel like we've seen two Vandy build teams this year. The it's not just the way the the result at the end. They really

I feel like played poorly against NC State. But really I felt like played much better last week. They did on the road against Auburn overall. I'm sure there's some frustrations from the fan base with some things that you mentioned. But yeah, this is not a number. I'm touching. I do think Georgia going to win comfortably, but I wouldn't be rushing to go out and lay 24 and a half. Hey, thanks everybody so much for joining us.
