It's just interesting and totally predictable, but the goalpost seemed to shift when the national media talks about Byron Brown. You are Lockdown Auburn, your daily podcast on the Auburn Tigers, part of the Lockdown Podcast Network, your team every day. Yes, welcome on in the Lockdown Auburn, your daily Auburn Tigers podcast. I'm your host, Zach Blackerby. Thank you so much for making Lockdown Auburn, your first listen, every single day. We're going through a list. We're going through a list today, written by CBS Sports, published by CBS Sports, written by Sheehan Jayaraja. And I agree with most of it. And I think the reasoning for some of this is solid. But in this off season, there's a lot of talk about fit. And this is him ranking the 10 quarterbacks

that have the best fit. And later in the show, there's a quarterback not on here. And I think it's important that he's not on here. And for Auburn, we'll jump into that in just a moment. They have Byron Brown at five as the fifth best fit in their new landing spot among transfer portal quarterbacks. There's just one thing. When you talk about fit, then a new system, he's in the same system, a system last year where he threw for 33158 yards, 28 touchdowns, just seven picks, 1,000 late rushing yards and 14 touchdowns. And so leading the list, not surprising if you follow any of the portal rankings, people love Drew Mestemaker, who transferred from North Texas to Oklahoma State.

Fine. And a big reasoning why folks are so high on them is that he's following his offensive coordinators, following his coach. It's a similar situation. And I just, I think Mestemaker at Oklahoma State is solid. And I think some of the defenses that he's gonna have to face aren't as good as the ones Byron Brown are gonna, is gonna have to face. So I get it. Okay, that's fine. If you wanna have him at one. Okay. Brendan Soresby going from Cincinnati to Texas Tech is one that I'm not fully with. If you're watching this and you would rather have Brendan Soresby on your team than Byron Brown, I'd love to hear the reasoning because I'm just not there on that. 2800 yards, 27 touchdowns, five picks, 580 yards rushing, nine rushing touchdowns, it's since about a year ago. Solid quarterback, solid stat line.

In the big 12 and now going to Texas Tech where they're gonna put resources around them, I'm totally okay with that. But we're ranking fit here. And the fit is different to different system, to different scheme. And so I don't know if I'm fully in on that one. Number three is Josh Hoover and Indiana. Indiana's gonna get every benefit of the doubt and they absolutely deserve it. They absolutely should. And I think Kirk's dignity is going to be great for Josh Hoover. Josh Hoover turned the ball over a lot last year at TCU, 13 interceptions. Okay, fine, whatever. But part of the reasoning of why he has Hoover so high is Hoover has been one of the most productive quarterbacks in college football over the last two years. But was often asked to do too much on a TCU team that struggled or on the ball. It's like, I don't think we're talking about fit. Now, you can make the argument any quarterback going to Indiana based off of what he's done last two seasons with Curtis Rork

and then Fernando Mendoza. You can put them as high up on the list as you want. But if you're arguing for production, I mean, nobody was more productive than Byra Brown last year. Sam Levin LSU, of course, is the other one that's going to be consistently ahead of Byra Brown was banged up last year. He's got a foot injury and to me, I still don't understand what that's not being mention more, but whatever, maybe it's fine. Maybe it's fine. So he's a four than Byra Brown. Is it five? And interestingly enough, just for those keeping score at home, he has Jackson Arnold going to UNLV at eight. How about that? How about that? So I just, all of these things saying, okay, this is a perfect piece to, you know, a puzzle at their new school. I'm fine with these are good quarterbacks. These are all guys that we mentioned. And then the Byra Brown that was got so loud, like always bring a Byra Brown with them, discussing any other quarterback is pointless.

And obviously that's what happened. You know, Aiden Child is going from Michigan, Satan North Westerns on here, Jaden Craig going from Harvard to T.C. Use on here. The guy from James Madison, Alonza Barnett going to UCF, that's cool. And then they have Dylan Rao on here. He's going to be a backup, which is kind of interesting. But all in all, regardless, the when you talk about fit, and that's going to be a new thing because I think Indiana's success and what Kirk's dignity done at Indiana, fit is going to be discussed more this off season that it probably ever has. And it should, because we're about to figure out, okay, is there actually a big shift happening in college football where everybody has talent and now it's about putting the talent in the right places? Or is this just an outlier? And we don't know. We don't know. For the Auburn folks, comparing what Alex Gollis has done to what Kirk's dignity did in Indiana, like we kind of hope it's not an outlier, right? Like you get those guys, you put them in pieces,

the fit, the fit, which is a theme here. Don't let them lie to you. When it comes to fit, Byron Brown has the best fit at his new school because of the system. And because of the guys they brought with them, and if you want to put Oklahoma State in there because of Drew Mestemaker, that's fine. I'm not going to really push back on that. I disagree with it. But the way people talk about Drew Mestemaker is different than the way they talk about Byron Brown that I don't think that's entirely fair. Just going to be honest. I don't think it's that much different of a situation. Here's the excerpt of what he says about Byron Brown. Brown was one of the top quarterbacks in the group of six last season. Now he has the opportunity to help turn around Auburn's offense. The Tigers failed to establish much of an offensive identity during the Hugh Free's era, almost at Harrison. But Brown immediately fills many of the biggest holes while his passing might be a work in progress at the SEC level. His physical running will help set a much higher floor

than the Auburn units of years past. And that's just not like, I don't know, the way he writes that is just different than the Mestemaker stuff or the Soresby stuff or the Hoover stuff. Like there is just an assumed thing that the weaknesses of the previous school are going to go away. It's just a different tone in my opinion. So I'm curious to see what this narrative is over the course of the off season. I bet it doesn't change much and that's okay. And that's okay. But when it comes to fit, Byron Brown in this offense has been elite for multiple seasons and that's really, that's the truth and all of this. So the fit is what he's already found success with. Can take that step forward. I think so. I think so. There's a name that wasn't on this list and I do think that's important. I want to jump in on that in just a moment

Thank you so much for making locked on Auburn. You're first listen every single day as we go through this top 10 list written by she-han Jayaraja of CBS Sports. Green with most of it, I think the logic for Bayern Brown is a little skewed compared to what the way he talked about all the other guys, which is fine. Expected, honestly. One of the guys not on here is Philo. I think it's Aaron Philo, meant to look that up. Aaron Philo, which is now, he's expected to be Florida starting quarterback. And I just think that matchup when Florida comes to Jordan Hare Stadium, both kicking off SEC play, it's gonna be so important for both of these teams.

And yes, Alex Gholish knows he needs to win this one. And the beautiful thing about this is this is absolutely winnable. John Sumrell, the new coach for Florida. These two guys are gonna be tied together. I've said it over and over and over again. This one's gonna mean something. Winning this is gonna have some umph. Do whoever wins this and losing it, it's gonna have some sting. Do whoever drops this one. The fact that it's an Auburn, I think is massive. The fact that it's on the road for Aaron Philo making his first SEC road start, we presume is massive. Auburn fans are gonna want this one. And the fact that a lot of Auburn fans aren't gonna get that first, you know, home experience of a big game since Baylor's in Atlanta, this is the first big one. And I think, you know, when we refer into this article, we talk about bit.

And guys following coaches to a new destination. And you can say the same thing about Philo. Georgia Tech guy follow his OC to Florida, which is normal. We've seen that. I mean, the list is littered with that. But the playing experience and production, that's the big, big thing here. And, you know, to throw it back to what Kirk's dignity is talking about, production over potential. By our brow, we don't have to ask any questions other than, is it gonna translate? Which is a reasonable question. People aren't asking that question with Drew Mesta maker. They are asking it with Byron Brown. And I guess that's because of the level of defense in the big 12. I guess, because you're not really hearing that much. Well, I guess with sores being, they say it in the big 12. And then who were going from the big 12 to the big 10? I think that's a jump. Not as big of a jump to USF to the SEC. I want to be clear, but it's just sometimes

there are assumptions and sometimes there's not. And, or we cover them up. And I don't know if that's entirely logically consistent here, but whatever. But Filo is a guy that's getting a lot of love. And Florida folks really, really believe in him. I've just seen, I'm not saying it can't work. Believe me, I'm not saying it can't work. And I think Florida's coaching staff is filled with a lot of guys that I spent several weeks podcasting about saying, I want it. I'm not dancing away from that. But I would rather have Byron Brown in that situation than Aaron Filo. And when you talk about fit, yes, Filo knows the offense because he's been in that room. But Byron Brown has run the offense that he is running. And I do think Florida and Filo are going to get better over the course of the season. I'm glad Auburn gets them early. I think it's a big, big deal. And I think when you talk about fit, right out the gate, and Auburn looking to start three, you know,

with a big win against Baylor in Atlanta, a home win against, you know, a team they should beat, a Southern Miss, right? And then hosting Florida, what a potentially incredible start to this era, this Alex Gholish era of Auburn football. If this new narrative about fit, this getting louder and louder, and it's absolutely on fire now because of Kirk's dignity and what he did in Indiana. If it truly is about fit, moving forward, Auburn should be an incredible spot. And a lot of that has to do with Byron Brown. A lot of it has to do with Keishan Singleton. A lot of it has to do with Jeremiah Cogre, these guys who are going to be throwing to Chaz Nimrod. The list goes on and on. If it's about fit, Auburn has a chance to start three, you know, then a host of Andy team could be electric. Could absolutely be electric. Stack up those wins early. If they do it, that middle of the schedule is brutal.

But if they can stack up those win early and lean on fit, because Vandy's in a similar situation, new quarterback, not a transfer, just a five star coming out of the high school ranks. I believe that's his first road game, first SEC road game. Can Jordan here stadium be that place that it was for so long where opposing quarterbacks just got rattled? We'll see if we can get back to that point. We'll see if we can get back to that point and fit early in the season is a big, big part of that. Please like the video. Please subscribe. We'll see you guys next time. This has been locked on Auburn.
