And actually Damien is going to be coming back and joining me live in studio later on in the program because he nearly got caught out by an online scam. But luckily, he very quickly copped something is a miss here. He did his research. He did his snooping around and normally holding discovered it was the scam. So thankfully, he didn't lose any money. But anyway, he'll join me in studio later on just to talk about it and just to outline what happened to him. By way of warning to anybody else, we talk about these scams always in the hope that we can avert somebody else in the future getting caught out because these scams are getting more and more
sophisticated and people you think shouldn't be getting caught out are getting caught out because they just look so realistic. So a chat about that. But if you've got a story to tell, if you work caught out or a family member with caught out are like our Damien, you nearly got caught. But you realized just in the nick of time that it was a scam. We'd love to hear from you as well. 08183103103 you can give them a raid. I call our text our WhatsApp in the details and of course our email address always available to you. Or today at c103.ie. Now I've been wondering as the year has gone on, has there been a decrease in the number of packages, small packages coming from outside the EU in particular. I'm talking about packages coming from China from the likes of the online stores. Teemo and Sheen where you can get anything from a needle to a haystack.
Always jokingly saying to me rage that they sell things on Sheen and Teemo that I swear we haven't even invented on this side of the world yet. And it is just one of those websites that if you've ever been on them, you can just get lost. You'll go on looking for one thing and you'll end up done a rabbit hole, look at lots of other different things as well. Anyway, there's been a huge, there was a huge increase in the amount of people doing shopping with these Chinese websites because the things were really, really cheap in many cases, a couple of euro. And but of course a lot of them are made are plastic and people were complaining about how bad it was for the environment. But the big one of course is for the economy and people not shopping in local stores are from an EU point of view, not shopping across the EU but going outside the EU to access all of this. What some would say in many cases is absolute cash. So of course what was introduced was a three euro per item charge that came into effect in July
of this year. And that was for all parcels worse, less than 150 euro. Of course the majority of those parcels are way less than 150 euro. So people started being told per item you'd have to pay an extra three euro. And I've been wondering since July, have the number of packages come down, but I can't find any research anywhere to let me know if it's come down or not. And I imagine it's probably going to be next year when maybe this charge is in a full year, or maybe at least even in a full six months that we might actually get figures on how it affected people's purchasing power, power, but our choices. But low and behold, yesterday it was announced that online shoppers buying from Britain, of course, they're outside the EU. So it's Britain, the US, China and anywhere outside of the EU are now going to face a custom fee of at least five euro per item in the run up to Christmas.
Why? Well, what was announced yesterday was the revenue commissioners. They confirmed a new two euro. They're calling it a handling fee, but it is also going to apply per item from the first of November and all of those parcels brought online from outside the EU. So this is an extra two euro on top of that three euro. And the EU is introducing the new handling fee and it is to help customs authorities, in our case, it'll be revenue. It's to help them deal with what the EU say is an avalanche of small parcels coming into the block. But I'm straight away thinking, has that avalanche of parcels not slowed down somehow since the three euro one came in? Are they basically saying that the three euro per item has made absolutely no difference at all? And hence they need to put this handling fee on on top.
Now, I do have some figures. This would be though up to when they introduced the three euro charge. There were 53 million small parcels, worth less than 150 euro imported into wider glass here. That's according to revenue. And that made up around 90% of all of the import declarations. The volume of parcels worth more than 150 euro is much lower at less than half a million there reckon per year. So a half a million worth over 150 euro, about 53 million parcels are the small ones. For the EU as a whole, the number of small parcel imports reach 5.7 billion last year. And seemingly that was a nine fold rise in just three years. Now, there are no guarantees that the new charge, this new two euro one will not be passed on to customers. And if that happens, what happens then? Because you're still going to have to pay it. Revenue say the fee can then be
charged at check out by sellers online, which in the main has been happening with the three euro one. Are they could end up being collected by on post or any of the other delivery services before they deliver to your door? But of course, if that happens, there's an extra charge then from either on post or the courier company because they have to have a handling fee. And it comes out really even more expensive. Now, it doesn't apply on any goods that obviously you purchase in Ireland, any goods you purchase in Northern Ireland, are if you purchase from any other EU country, any of the other 26 countries, then there's none of these fees are handling fees. It's just outside of the EU, hence, we're Brexit that the UK are included. But you've got to make sure that the goods are physically in those countries when the order is placed because some of the companies will have
perhaps the goods made in China. There might be dispatching from China, even though it is a new EU country or an Irish country. So again, you have to be very, very careful with where you're buying from and check out the country of origin where the order is actually originating from. Now, like the three-year charge that's been in since July, the new two-year level, Levy, is also going to apply per distinct item in the package. So we'll go back to the example, I think that all of us in the media used last July to try ourselves to get a handle on what this was all about, but to try to put it forward to let people know and give them an understanding of it. In order that contains a pen, a notebook and a key ring. So three distinct items. Now, you're going to the likes of Timo or Xine and you're buying your very fancy pen, your fancy notebook and your lovely key ring and you're getting the whole, the three of them for ten euro. Okay, that's what you're either going to pay Timo or Xine. Now you have to put in the two different
EU custom charges. So they are going to be five euro per unique item. So they've been extra five euro on the pen and extra five euro on the notebook and an extra five euro on the key ring. Now, we're up to 15 euro in EU customs charges, but hold your horses. Then because on top of that, there'll be a little bit of that thrown in and customers buying three identical pens. Well, you'll get off a little bit lighter. You can buy your three pens for a tenor and then you'll only be charged a five or so you're only rather than the 15 and the three different items, you'll only pay a five or because you're buying three pens that are identical. Now, while it was designed to target the likes of the Timo and the Xines of this world, custom experts are saying it has also affected British retailers, including people like Cosmetic Giant and the chemist Boots, because a lot of Boots, many people buy, and they buy from Boots.ie because obviously Boots
are on our high street here in Ireland, but they also have a very busy online service and you know, they click and collect services. Well, but what can often happen is that when you buy from Boots.ie, a lot of the Irish orders are actually fulfilled outside of the country, and they might be fulfilled in one of their warehouses in Britain. And of course, when that happens, it means poor individual item, whatever you're buying from Boots, will come with an extra three euro charge and now five euro charge. So you do need to keep a lookout for that. By the way, for people who are buying items over 150 euro, you don't get away scot free, you face more, many more complex rules, but that is based on pre-existing customs duties, these new levies targeting the smaller, cheaper packages. They're not affected by the more expensive ones. And an example that is used is a single package, if you're chopping online and you're buying a single package from
outside the EU and say you're buying yourself a pair of jeans and they're a hundred euro. And then you go for a very smart pair of runners and they're 150 euro. So your parcel is 250 euro. That parcel will face total customs duties of 41 euro and 35 cents. It does include four euro in handling fees. The handling fees, by the way, is not refundable. Even if the goods that you buy are later found to be faulty, whereas the three euro introduced in July, that weird enough is refundable. Faulty goods, but the handling one isn't. So online shoppers are being once again advised to please check the website's terms and conditions and particularly to look under the about us page, because that will confirm the business's physical and shipping addresses. But what I'm wondering today, as I say, I can't get actual evidence and data yet to say,
has there been a falloff in the amount of the small parcel? So I'm wondering to anybody listening who up to July had been a regular shopper with the likes of Sheen or Teemo. Or perhaps you have people in your household who were regular shoppers, sons and daughters who had a lot of packages coming through the door from Teemo and Sheen. And has this unique three euro per item charge? Has it affected the way they are shopping? Have they been buying less? And also now we're going up to five euro, I'd like your thoughts on that. Marais just taking your calls on 0818103103. If you want to text your WhatsApp, you can't to 0862103103. One is the same. Pretty yet, I very much still do my shopping online as I find it much, much easier. But I'm wondering is that still with the outside of the EU where you're paying three euro per unique item? Is it not making the items much more expensive? And another listener
says, my daughter is used to shop an awful lot on Sheen, but I've certainly noticed less and less packages arriving and certainly they're much more picking now in what they are ordering because of the three euro charge, which from start of November goes to five euro. Thank you for that. And then another listener is making the point about how expensive Ireland is and this is in regard to socializing. Hi Patricia, in recent visit to a hotel in Calarney, I was shocked when I checked my receipt. I was charged nine euro 50 for a glass of red wine. And I was also charged one euro for a splash of orange cordia. We are all meant to support Ireland. I'd been in a restaurant the previous day and the wine there had cost me seven twenty a glass. So I was thinking what's going on between the restaurant and the hotel also. Why would you charge a full euro just for a drop of orange? It makes no sense at all. And looking at the cost of the wine, you can get a decent bottle
of wine for ten euro. And I nearly paid that in a hotel for one glass, but I suppose the hotel will defend it by saying overheads, etc. 0818103103. We've got Merage taking your calls. You can text your WhatsApp to 0862103103. Email Patricia now with your story or comment. cork today at c103.ie. Cork today on c103. If you've driven through band and town during peak hours recently, you'll know that gridlock is becoming an everyday reality for commuters and indeed locals alike. The first section of the N71 bypass was completed 35 years ago, ending at the Kim Britain road. But phase two connecting through clan cool to Burnett's bridge remains unfinished. With new housing developments on the way and local frustration growing, cork County Council's head of roads has admitted that completing this second phase is going to be
particularly challenging. And that's due to cost and also rooting issues. Joining me now to discuss this is a Finneville Councillor at Gillian Cochlam. Good morning to you, Gillian. Good morning, Patricia. Good morning, Gillian. You're welcome to the program. As I mentioned, 35 years since phase one of the N71 bypass was completed. If a project barit, head of roads at Cochlam to Councillor, noting that that finishing phase to particularly challenging. Now, he says it's due to route affordability and also constructability. Given that the route is currently undergoing what's called a peer group review, and that's by Transport Infrastructure Ireland, how confident are you, Gillian, that this project won't just sit on a shelf? Well, that's really the big question is, Patricia. And thank you for highlighting it because that you say there is growing frustration among commuters across West Cork, trying to avoid abandoned town and really, you know, clogging up roads, back roads and other roads around the
countryside. So with regard to this, as I say, when I first joined Cork County Council, I raised just 10 years ago, and they really, it had been forgotten. You know, it certainly had, it was not on an agenda anywhere. In the intervening 10 years, some progress has been made, but really, it's, you know, there's no ground reddened. We don't have a route selected. So I really do want to put pressure on Cork County Council now and on TII to select a route. But it will be difficult. Patrick is right, and I want to thank Patrick Barrett for his work in really pushing this on the TII agenda, because the, in the intervening 35 years, the south side of the town has changed and developed out around Old Chapel there and around Crossman, around Clankoul. And so, now, because the route had not been sterilized, because the corridor had not been sterilized, there are obstacles in the way. And this will cause difficulties for homeowners, for landowners, as you can imagine, you know, for any new big infrastructure, this is going to cause a lot of of questions and soul searching. So it's not easy, but I do think it is essential. The town and
the entire West Corp region continues to expand, continues to develop, and we need this essential infrastructure. In fact, we're behind the curve. And we should really be talking about another bridge over the River Banden and a route across the north side of the town, which is also very congested, but here we are. We can't have two half bypasses. We need to complete one and open up the south side of the town for economic development, for industry and employment, and to maybe get some more cars off of the road and not congesting in a Shannon, and the rest of the route to Cork every morning. Yeah, and of course, we know with new housing developments planned for Banden. I mean, would the big fear be like, how severe will traffic congestion get if second phase isn't somehow fast-tracked? Well, I think that's that is the real problem, you know, and we don't have enough investment in public transport either. There are aint options for people to get to their workplace. And so, you know, it is important and things like amenities, you know, a swimming pool,
all of these types of demands that are really growing in Banden. We need land for that, and you need enabling infrastructure like a road to unlock the lands to develop those types of sites. And as I say, I'd like to see more industry, more employment on the outskirts of the town so that people are not always commuting up and down the road. So, it will get very congested. It is causing a lot of frustration, and my fear is that, you know, as I say, people take alternative routes, that creates pressure on, you know, quiet country roads, and then we know what will happen then, they'll be speeding and an accident, and even more pressure along the road network. So, it is imperative, Patricia. It is not, it's not just for Banden, you know, this is enabling infrastructure for, you know, the fish industry in West Cork. All of that is traveling up and down, West Indies, every day. We see our delivery lories for supermarkets, for all types of logistics across the region. You know, they need a reliable road network. For tourists, all of this,
you know, they expect to have a reliable road network. Not a huge podge of half bypasses here, going on to a country road. It's really not acceptable. Okay, would you like sort of specific timelines or even funding commitments from the Department of Transport and TIII? Because if you got some sort of funding commitment, it might give you some kind of a guarantee, you know, that this preferred corridor through Clankool will actually get built. Well, you see, we're not really even there yet, Patricia, because we have been now been told that TIII will brief us councillors in this quarter, in quarter four of 2026, about the preferred route option. That will then go to public consultation. I don't expect that would be an easy, an easy consultation, you know. So we're a bit away from that. I think we need to get a line on the map that is agreed. And then, you know, we can look for funding then. If we go to TII now, we're not there for funding. We don't have a definite route selection as ascertained as yet. Yeah, okay. All right, but just to keep it out there,
and as you say, make sure that people haven't forgotten about this bypass and how badly it is needed. Just want to have you on the line. I just want to move to a different topic and move to education, because you recently brought a motion before Cork County Council calling on the Department of Education to acquire land and design a dedicated Guilcalauchta for West Cork. Now, recent service has shown 80% of local Guilcalauchta students want to continue their education to Irish, and obviously they don't have that choice in West Cork. Why do you think it's taken so long for infrastructure to catch up with this? What is an amazing demand? 80% of students? Well, it's the same story I suppose Patricia really is, and it's the, you know, increasing demographic, the increasing population of West Cork, the increasing diversity, the increasing love and grow for the Irish language, just, you know, currently a Glundere Creeram, Guilan sort of a Lipschinaun, and that we're seeing through the
Guilcalauna. So there are over 600 students in Guilcalauna in West Cork, and they have no defined pathway really into a second level Irish medium school, and that's, that is their constitutional right. I mean, Irish is the first language of our state, and parents should have the choice to send their children to a Guilcalauchta if they so wish in their locality, not to have to travel up to Clark City, you know, to refer back to my earlier point, more cars on the road, and more children getting up at all are, is the morning to go to, to go to schools in Clark. So no, there should be provision in the West Cork region for, for students, and for parents to avail of high quality Irish medium education in their own region, and that's really what we're calling for, and the demand is there. I think look, we even, when I said earlier in my motion that you know, a choir land, in the interim, we have identified a site where I want to really pay tribute to the parents group who have been extraordinarily active on this and have done an enormous amount
of work and research. They have identified a site, an existing building in the clinical area where this could temporarily be, be housed, and because clinicality has enormous pressure on schools at present, it seems, there is a dearth of places for, for, for first years at the moment, this could really take a lot of boxes in that it provides more school places for the locality, and also for the wider region, the banden, the clinicality, the scabreene, the manway, even into bandchland, down of course the Cape Clear, which is our local grail talk, near her carkey, and it would be sort of a regional hub grailclosh for the West Cork region. Fantastic. It would be fantastic. Yeah, and actually I think that's a really good idea on behalf of the parents, because if you look back over the history of the grail scaleners, a lot of those grail scaleners started in temporary accommodation, parents were so passionate about making sure that their children in primary school were educated, ask where they came up with places that could
be used to schools, and then they eventually went on to get their permanent structure, so well done to the parents, because the grail scaleners have been so popular and they have mushroomed all over the country. I really do think the department of education need to wake up and spend the roses, and they really need to catch up and realise that there are a lot of these students. I wasn't surprised to hear the figure of 80%, they go to primary school, ask where they are, and they want to go to secondary school doing it the same way. Absolutely, and you know, we've just in Coercount to Council completed a variation to the county development plan, to zone more land for housing. You know, as nature will, you know, there will be an increased population, we are projecting 12 and a half thousand people in bandin, up to 8,000 people in bandin are in clinicality in the next five to 10 years. You know, those children will need the infrastructure, they will need the schools. So let's get ahead, you know, you're saying catch up,
but we need to even catch up and get ahead and provide the infrastructure for the future, not always have to be behind the curve. So I think there's the education question in that there would be places, school places for children, but also that there will be in a grail kaloshda where they can avail of, as I say, high quality Irish medium education in their own locality, and as parents want this, the demand is there, it's their constitutional right, it's in the program for government also Patricia, the arctic issued report on the Irish medium education outside the grail stock in 2025, and it has stated government policy that they are encouraging the construction and establishment of grail kaloshda. So it's all good, the momentum is all there, but I really want, I suppose, it to be right first time as well, that we would get the infrastructure, I really admire the can-do attitude of this parent group, they're extraordinary, but I want the department to support them. It shouldn't always be this struggle, you know, that this department should come in, support them now, establish this grail kaloshda, and we have
the resources, there are many, you know, with grail stocked in Cape Clear, we've got the screen, we have the teachers, we have the expertise in the locality that could get this up and running very, very quickly, I think, and I think we will be exciting for young children today who are attending the grail school in the Netherlands and the Calcutta Quilta, and she could bring connections now, you know, very soon, the grail kaloshda in some counter-year. Great, great, great, I'm more importantly, you have the students who want to go as well, so we need action now, and not promises from the Department of Education, listen, we'll follow this one closely, Jillian in the meantime, thank you for that, and thanks for joining us. Love you to see two Today's gragmatical second morning. Good morning. Good morning, that is Finaffle, the counselor at Jillian Cochlin, 0818103, 103. Court today on C103, and Maria tells me that she still getting calls in from people asking about the fuel allowance I did mention this on Monday, but let me mention it, again, According to citizen information, the fuel allowance is starting to get paid out from this week, and it gets paid on whatever day you normally pick up your social welfare. Oh, your social welfare payment is paid
into your bank accounts. So as far as we know and citizens information are rarely wrong, it is from this week that the fuel allowance is paid out, talking of Merite. She's sitting across from me in studio because it's Wednesday, happy Wednesday to you. Happy Wednesday. And it's time for our Wednesday wisdom. And this tied in with something that you spoke about, well, I was away on the holidays and it's a listener picking up on that. So I suppose I'll hand it over to you and you can explain what's going on here. Perfect. So it says, hi Patricia and Merite. I hope you're both keen. Well, I heard the show the other day where the listener was asking for advice regarding having a cleaner in our cleaner comes in twice a month to do a deep clean, hovering changes the beds, cleans the windows, etc. She's wonderful. She comes in when there's no one in the house. So I can't really offer any insight to that other lady about whether it's okay to be in your house when the cleaner is in. I do hope she's feeling better. I remember her saying she had an injury. It got me thinking though and I wanted to know what your other listeners might think of this. My mother-in-law really disapproves of us getting a cleaner in. She doesn't seem to appreciate the
time it gives my husband and I with her kids. We've two busy jobs and a hectic home life. The only time we'd have to do those cleaning jobs will be weekends. But to us, that's precious time to spend with our two young children. I know how privileged we are to be able to afford to get a cleaner in. Why not? Is it really that frowned upon? My mother-in-law has never said it bluntly, but she drops the odd comment like, sure, you'll have plenty of time with no cleaning to do. I don't know why it bothers her so much. My husband just says to take no notice, but it's back in my mind since listening to the question the other day. Cleaners are wonderful people. They make such a difference. Pants, a busy woman. Oh, okay. So this is the mother-in-law kind of poo-hooing the idea that her son's wife would need a cleaner. See, I think this is generation. This is a woman who the mother would have done all of her own cleaning. Now, while she is saying to her mother, was she somebody who worked in the home and therefore
would say, oh, the cleaning was part of my job. I did she have a job as well. We don't have so many questions that need to be asked here, but it is kind of somebody looking down on, I mean, that line about, shouldn't you plant your time with no clean and to be doing it and you can nearly hear the tone, you can nearly hear the tone. Yeah, it's okay. I can understand why both working the weekends are precious. And if you've got children, the weekends have very precious times. And if you have to leave all your cleaning jobs to the weekend, then suddenly it becomes like it's a big job at the weekend and it eats into the little bit of time that you have off. So yeah, absolutely getting a cleaner in, I can see it. But I think the mother-in-law, to me, it's a generation, I think. She could never see herself in the position that she would have a cleaner into her house. So maybe there's a little bit of jealousy going on as well. You know, you sound like you have a wonderful cleaner. I mean, even cleaning the windows.
That's amazing woman. You've got a good cleaner for sure. But anyway, why do you make an evolve of this marriage? Yeah, and I think, you know, the mother-in-law needs to remember here, like it's not just the daughter-in-law gets the cleaner. I mean, her son too, you know what I mean, if they were to be cleaning on the weekends, I'm sure, you know, you'd hoped that both of them would be sharing the duties and doing the cleaning. And I think, you know, there's, you know, you can obviously, you know, you do the quick jobs, you're clearing off the table and doing all those small bits, but it is those bigger jobs. Like you just said, cleaning the windows and like, they're all changing the sheets, changing the sheets. I mean, there's a lot of time goes into that. And like that, if they, she says in this, they've hectic home life. So you can imagine, you know, upper the morning, everyone out probably school crashed wherever they're going off to work, home then in the evening, and then you might have training. You could have drama, dance, anything. By the time everyone settled and has a bit of time together and time to relax, because it's important to allow for that as well. Like, I just think, like, why not? Like, I mean, she's
settled herself. I know her privilege to be her, but you are privileged. And, you know, if it's allowing you more time with your family, like, like, for sure, you know, you have to be able to spend the time together, because at some day, those, you know, the kids are going to be older. They're going to be off probably doing their own thing, spending time with friends and that. So like, the years are, you know, they're very precious and they move very quickly. So if you can have the option of getting the cleaner in, I don't see why not. And I would just say, take notice of the mother and not just let her off. If it bothers her that much, then it's on her. And I would think, girl, you know, yeah, listen, there's a lot more things in the world to be worrying about. Somebody says, if the son and his wife can afford a cleaner and it makes life easier, there's nothing wrong with paying somebody to do the job that they don't have the time are indeed the energy for. And here's another good example as well of somebody says, people outsource all kinds of things. People employ gardeners. They get, they bring a car, you know, to a garage for
car repairs. They bring in decorators, childcare, takeaways, a cleaner is simply another service. That's a good way of looking at it. Absolutely. Yeah, definitely. And I love just on a side note, I love watching TikTok videos of cleaners who go into homes and now sometimes they go into maybe like, you know, properties that maybe no one has lived in for a while. Horders? Yeah, you know, exactly. Yeah. And they do like these amazing cleaning videos. I love watching cleaning videos. And that's obviously an aside, you know, I suppose this house wouldn't come into it because it's, you know, it's lived in and if it's done twice a month by a cleaner, but like that, you know, yeah, it's another service. And I think as I say, if you can, then why not? And just black out that kind of, you know, negativity towards it because I think, I think it's a great thing. And yeah, if you can, then why not? And if it gives you more time with your kids, yeah, and I wonder, I wonder, I wonder, take this a step further. Are there some people out there who do employ cleaners? What they don't talk about us? You know, I'm wondering are some people,
do people openly say, yeah, I've a cleaner who comes in two, three times a week, are some people quiet about us, you know, would they be like, would they fit not a shame just probably the wrong words, but would they? Is there a stigma? Yeah, I wonder, I wonder, is there something like that, particularly, I think, between the generations, I do, I really do think this was a generation of things. I can't, you know, for example, I'm convinced that one of her friends would never say, she have plenty of time, you know, clean and to do, you're not going to get that from somebody your own age group. I think this is a generation of things. I think the mother and all just cannot get her head around the fact that anyone would be coming into the house to do the cleaning, that she does all the cleaning herself. Yeah, and I think, yeah, I agree with you on that. And I think like anyone who has an issue with it, they're not in your space, they're not living your life. So if they've an issue with it, I think it's on them more than it's on you. And I, yeah, I know it's easy to say just block out the noise and the negativity around it, but like, you know, I suppose you, you can't kind of help what someone takes issue with. And
yeah, ultimately, like I mean, I definitely wouldn't let it stop. And I know the husband is saying, look, just take no notice. But I can imagine the, I can imagine the son said, oh, that's my mother, take it. You know, you know, you can, you're going to imagine it's been brushed off like that. For example, we're all daughter and all it's obviously playing in her mind. Somebody says, I'd be telling that mother and daughter in mind, her own business. I'm a mother, and I'd love a cleaner. So when I says morning ladies, I wish people, I wish people, IE that mother and I would mind their own business. They are not paying for the cleaner and they don't need to justify your spending to anyone. If the mother and daughter is so bothered, let her in to clean the house. People really bother me. I have one because I have, I have a cleaner because I fiber my algebra and I can't manage the beds. I pay to make life easier for me. Love the show ladies. You see, there is another reason, well, don't you forget a cleaner and there's a natural physical reason why somebody forget a cleaner and that's why Erilis and her last week
had got in touch. She, she doesn't regularly get a cleaner, but she injured herself. She injured, I think it was her back. She said she'd injured and she got the cleaner in, but she wasn't sure in the Esquit. She was like, can I be in the house and clean this there? And she was just not sure about that. And look, we did get mixed reaction going into your house. You're more than entitled to be in there, but it's just that awkwardness. And that's where obviously this listener heard it and it's kind of brought it back into her mind going, I wonder, just on the cleaning topic, like do people really, is it really that big deal? It's not. And it's just, yeah, and I think anyone to take issue with the fact that someone else gets a cleaner, it's the person who makes the issue has the problem. Each to their own. And everybody needs their own life. Anyway, if you want to share your wisdom and thank you to those that have already done it. By the way, the woman who was onto us with the dash of orange, no, dash of cordial at euro. Is that, is that common? Because somebody else is just saying that they were charged 150 for a dash of cordial and that was in Limerick, I saw it as daylight, the other list was done in Kilarini in a hotel when they got charged.
I have to know when you were 50. Because I'd have something with white and lime and I don't know if you get the dash of lime. I know they have to charge because obviously they have to buy the cordial. Yeah, but 150 or when you were a son of a business. Yeah. That's interesting now. Yeah. Anyway, that's what's coming into us by text. Thank you for that. And Marade who's back now taking your calls at 08103. Now, Marade has asked me to give a shout-out to somebody who was in contact with the program last week when Marade was presenting it. And it was a gentleman who was looking for a Bible. And John, it was John from Donorail was looking for some type of a Bible. Now, I don't have any more details on it than that except that we have had another list of them in contact with us today who may have the Bible, the John is looking for and is in the position to pass it on. So unfortunately, we just haven't got a note of John from Donorail's
telephone number are in address or any kind of a contact detail for him. So if you can re-contact the program, please ideally if you just pick up the phone and give Marade a call, 08103103, she can talk you through what the other listener has on offer for you. Now, we were hoping early on in the week, but at the interview for some reason fell through, we were going to be talking about what is due to come in from next year where pets are going to be allowed to travel on public transport. They'll be allowed on buses and trains and in Dublin, they'll be allowed on things like the Lewis. And obviously for pet owners, this is a huge thing to be able to bring their dog with them. If you go to other countries, you will know that, you know, well trained, well controlled dogs will regularly be seen on public transport. If you're at airport, so many of the main airports in Europe, you'll see the dogs wandering around until finally
they go into the hold to go on the plane, but you know, they deal with certainly and constantly Europe. They deal with dogs on these much differently to what we do in this country. So it's kind of a thing in some ways, I suppose, moving with the times, there are people out there who do want to bring their pets on public transport. We know there is this big encouragement to get us out of cars and to get us all using more public transport. And if some people want to take maybe their dog for a longer walk, then they've got to go in the car to get to where they want to go for the longer walk, they might instead prefer to use public transport. So we're opening a public transport to people and their pets, but that isn't going down well for obvious reasons with everyone. And somebody was on to us this morning to say, on this issue of dogs on bosses and trains, my, a member of my family has severe asthma and will simply not be able to use bosses if there is a dog on board, because any kind of dog for triggers her asthma to the point that she simply
cannot breathe. I also have friends who are simply terrified of dogs, but they depend on public transport. We've been discussing it. Now they're already saying they have no idea how they're going to be able to travel anywhere because of their fear of getting on a boss and there will be a dog on board. We already know, when it's been discussed on this program, that we have anti-social behaviour on some of our bosses. So can you imagine when drivers, what the drivers will have to contend with when someone gets on board with their dog, planning to cause trouble? If for example, a dog attacks passengers on board, there will be nowhere for the person to escape. And it's all very well for transport, for transport Ireland to say that there will be rules in place around the dogs, but quite honestly, there are those who simply do not comply with the current rules that exist. So putting dogs into the mix on public transport, I feel will only make the situation
even worse. I simply think this is a bad idea. So we'll open the phone lines and the text messages on that one as well, if people want to have their views on how they feel about having dogs. Now you can bring, you can bring cats, obviously, other than you being in a cat on a lead, but you can bring a cat in a container, if you wanted to get the cat to the vet, and it would sit on your lap, they're not going to be allowed on the seats or whatever. But I would be fearful if you had a dog and then a cat in a cat container terrified when they see the dog, you could see the cat, nearly having a collection inside in the cat carrier, and then the dog decided to have a go with the cat. Anyway, I can picture all kinds of scenarios. Some of them of course may never happen. But do you have views on it? If you're terrified of dogs, then that must be a huge fear. Obviously, you get on to a boss and you're sitting on the boss and there isn't a dog on. Then what if a dog gets on, you know, what do you do? Do you get off and wait for the next boss if you're
relying on your boss to go to work and the boss pulls up and somebody has decided to bring a fighto with them on their journey into work. Yes, I can see somebody terrified but get on the boss. I also feel for this listers family member who says, been anywhere near a dog can trigger an asthma attack. You know, what do you do and how do you handle a situation like that? Anyway, I think there will be a lot more discussions about this before it actually comes in. I still haven't got an actual date. It's meant to be sometime next year, but I still don't have an actual date on when it is due to start, but you views are welcome. Oh, 818 at 103103. I was speaking with Councillor Gillian Cochland in the last hour and we were talking about a bypass for bandin. The first half was opened 35 years ago and I actually remember it because I was working in bandin at the time and just started this program. It's about a year into this program when the bypass actually opened and you know, I mean, much, much fanfare. And here we are 35 years later
there was great plans and talks of the second half of the bypass being completed and it hasn't been completed. So Councillor Gillian Cochland, local Councillor in bandin was on on behalf of the people of bandin and the huge number of people who pass through the town of bandin. You've got the people who commute from west cork into the city. You're the people from west cork who've got to go through bandin to get to hospital appointments or any kind of appointments in the city. Then think in the summer months, all the people that pass through bandin both coming and going from to and from west cork, including people who stay in bandin as well. So there's a lot of people get involved with the town of bandin in order to get to and from west cork. There's a lot of people that affected with traffic gridlock and she was on this morning just saying as a local Councillor, she's not forgetting about the bypass on the other side of the town and how desperately it is needed. That prompted one of our listeners from Mallow. Listening with great
interest to Gillian speak on behalf of the people of bandin and this text or no name on it once to know who's standing up for the town of Mallow. The listener describes the town as once being a busy and alive town. Where are our new roads? A bypass that has been shelved for many many years and yet we have roads that were designed and built in the 70s and the 80s. We have no new roads in Mallow. All of the new housing estates have gone up over the last couple of decades and no great roads in and out of Mallow town. This listener feels that the centre of the town is dead and it is a ghost at town. We have no town council and the town council used to be the ones that looked after all of these problems. I know that's a separate issue talking about the last of the town councils but many many people do particularly towns like Mallow that once had a town council they do belong the fact that the town councils are gone and the access to the people who
were elected as town councils they were always available to the townspeople. 0818103103 and then a couple of comments on our Wednesday wisdom. The listener who has a cleaner that comes in a couple of times a month to do a deep clean and the mother-in-law is kind of having a pop off them saying sure isn't it fine fear which you're cleaner and she have plenty of time with no cleaning to do and the daughter-in-law just feels that the mother-in-law is looking down her nose at her son and his wife at their notions the fact that they are getting a cleaner in. Ellen says Patricia can I just tell you that it takes hours to do house work. I know says Ellen I'm a full time cleaner tell that listener and her husband she's doing the right thing tell her take time with her children at the end of my work in day I have to come home and clean my own house as well
says Ellen so yeah cleaners are never quite finished are they they've got to go home and do their own houses and then no name on this morning parade and Patricia I wouldn't mind a cleaner and I'd have loved one particularly when my children were younger but my husband didn't really want to get one is he and therein lies a problem there are some people who will be really uncomfortable about the idea of bringing a cleaner into their house and obviously this listener's husband felt just like that so said the listener we sat down and we chatted about it obviously I put forward the reason I wanted to cleaner he put forward the reason why he didn't like the idea of having a cleaner in the house so we made a decision that we would split all of the jobs so he is great and he does help me with the bigger jobs things like the making of the beds the cleaning of the windows and by the way he is a great cook when it comes to dinner I then do a lot of the smaller jobs so it is worked out brilliantly we both agreed and we're happy out and we have
now worked on a fantastic solution we do take the kids to sporting activities and we made the decision that we always do that together and we have four small children one to four oh so one two three at a four-year-old oh goodness me there are steps and stairs so I do know what it is like what once both in the couple agree and are happy who really cares what anybody outside the home feels the most important is that direct little family unit and that the direct family unit is involved and the listener says love the Wednesday wisdom thank you and that is good to hear that because we're seven greater often so searching about how the Wednesday wisdom piece is going I think it's going out well for sure but it's great to see that imprint from a listener thank you for that and you can continue to get in your advice for our listener who signed herself a busy woman and she's enjoying having the cleaner in her most people are of the view to kind of live and let
live and let the mother and daughter feel whatever way she feels oh eight one eight one oh three one oh three can I also say on that what came in from a listener about the cordial getting charged for a dash of obviously they wanted you know glass of water with a little bit of cordial in a she don't just to take the blanjeness off the drink and for the splash of the cordial orange cordial they were charged a euro and somebody else was charged one euro fifty and someone else has up into two places for a black current splash and I've been charged an extra euro so it does seem to be a commenting in hospitality and I know before any business gets on to me it is all to do with the cost of doing business except all of that but surely the splash of cordial should be based on really what almost what you're paying for it there isn't a lot more work in throwing a splash of orange or a splash of black water into the drink or into a glass of water so Pat says I think a lot of this is to do with rip off Ireland with what is happening but it is becoming more and more common
and on the levy on the items that we buy from outside the EU we're currently paying three euro per individual item from the first of November there's an extra two euro going on to it so you will be paying five euro. Margaret says what happens when people in the UK send you a gift is there any levy on that I get these scams important to be from revenue telling me I also much on a package and I remember doing a lot of interviews in the run up to July when the three euro charge was coming in because I was predicting the scammers were already drafting up their emails or drafting up their text messages to make it look like it was to do with the levy and it was to do with the revenue looking for it I don't know how many was there there was certainly was a rise in those scams I don't know if they're still going on that they definitely will start again in November when the new one comes in but no when somebody from the UK is sending a gift they don't have to pay the levy because remember the levy is being paid in EU countries this levy
isn't be paid by people in the UK so when you when someone in the UK is sending you a gift no they don't but if anyone in the UK is sending you a gift please tell them when they go to the post office make sure that they've all the forums filled in I have to say the Irish postal staff have been fantastic anytime I've had to go to the post office with packages for England since the UK left the EU and Brexit and all of that and it does take time to fill in everything that needs to be filled in in order to declare what is in the package so that you don't end up paying any kind of customs and excise but I have had so many packages coming the other way from England to Ireland going missing and a lot of it is down to people go into the post office the packages way weighed and in some of the UK post offices they just pop it in and send it off and of course it arrives in Ireland without any of the custom and excise stickers on it and it ends up going all the way back and you go back to the person who then has to resend it again and pay
for the postage again so anyone if you have family members and I know it's hard to ask are you sending me a present this year if you are make sure when you go to the post office that it has all of the customs declarations on it oh 818 103 103 we've got more age taking your calls see 103 jobs board gosh energy local heroes find a local hero to upgrade and replace your old inefficient gas boiler now at local heroes dot hi we have a bus escort is required for school at Triest pick up is from any one of the following locations the airport at five mile Donnie Brook are Douglas CVs please to niv. now in emergency accommodation against this background the cork Simon community they've just published their 2025 annual impact report painting a stark picture of services stretched to their very limits and the growing challenges faced by single adults trying to find affordable accommodation joining us to break down some of those numbers and to talk about the realities on the ground is derma cavernano derma is ceo of the cork Simon community at derma good morning to you and you're welcome to the program thanks for having me on christian now the report highlights of 14 percent increase in homelessness across cork and carry since January and that figure of 932 adults talk to me derma what are the primary factors driving this ongoing spike in numbers
yeah i i think there needs to be a real focus on the factor that is probably driving homelessness to greatest extent these days and that is the inability of people to find accommodation that they afford i think when when you look at things 10 years ago when hack was for our housing assistant payment was first introduced it was set at a at a certain level the base rate for hasn't increased at all in the last 10 years and local authorities have been given this question to give up to 35 percent on top of that in certain circumstances what the reality is the rents have increased by 87 percent since 2016 so when you take that together with the cost of living crisis where people are struggling to pay for electricity to pay for
public transport is going up shortly fuel costs have risen substantially there's thousands of people far more than the homeless number show who are living in fear of homelessness who are at the very edge in terms of being able to keep the rent payments off and more and more people are falling into homelessness would i like to that we we have a problem at the other end as well in that it's extremely hard to find social or affordable housing for people who are stuck in homelessness so one of the things we're saying in our annual report is that we've seen the length of time people are staying in our emergency shelter who are by an average of two weeks over the over the past couple of years you know yeah the average stay it's a very concerning situation yeah the average staying corkslimes emergency accommodations risen from 44 days that's what it was
in 2022 to 58 days for last year so these are the people who are stuck in emergency shelters and and and a stock is it's you know it's got to switch it off a word to use but because they're in the emergency shelters therefore somebody coming up along the line who needs to get into an emergency shelter can't because this person can't move on because they can't find accommodation when well what's happening is that to be fair to local authorities will generally find emergency accommodation for people a lot of this private emergency accommodation you know people essentially living in hotels and beer b's but that's happening they're getting stuck there for longer and longer and longer and the real solution has to be you know two things one is you know delivering more affordable and social housing for people and the second thing is to prioritize those who have
been stuck the longest for any housing that does become available and another factor in the stats there is that in Carc and Kerry modern tree quarters of homeless households are single people and I know that you know the minister will shortly be publishing a very welcome new strategy in terms of family homelessness and that's very important and it's vital but there is no strategy for our our single people and one of the things the minister has done is he's asked if resources are prioritized towards families who are longest in homeless accommodation same should be happening for single people as well if we're testing I was chatting with somebody recently who had a room at Torent and he said he party people applied obviously it was a single room for a single person party people applied and I just if I was thinking my goodness like how how bad are we
have we gone that party people would apply for one single room you know you're just thinking goodness me and there's just not a lot of that type of accommodation out there and I know in your own report you you you share the story of a lady called margarita who described how couch surfing drags you down to your knees now she's been helped out by a corksignment to secure a home on her own how vital jermis is long term tendency support in turning somebody's life completely around therapy's biggest impact doesn't show up in some dramatic breakthrough it shows up in the smallest moments you bite your tongue instead of escalating you put your phone down instead of firing off that text you say what you actually mean instead of what would hurt someone else the most nobody applauds those moments but they quietly change your life that's what growing feels like and that's exactly what growth therapy is here for grow is therapy that works covered by insurance sessions

yeah um far a not a lot of people who find themselves homeless find as you can imagine find the experience extremely traumatic and as i was saying earlier there can be a long build up to those people find it harder and harder to afford rent and people's mental health and other issues can deteriorate the stresses is enormous for our people so when people come into homeless services our find themselves couch surfing or whatever it is it's it's an awful point in their life and generally people do need support as well as housing to to a system to get their life back together you know so i would say that it's absolutely vital and we work with we we work with a lot of people who are very long-term homeless and who have developed complex
issues relating distress mental health addiction all the things to go with reactions to traumatic experiences in life and i know that we have founders when you have the housing and when you have the um the supports that that go with that it makes a huge difference for people and people can absolutely transform their lives and i know course i manage i know course i'm and managed to find safe alternatives to emerge the accommodation for 57 adders it was through diversion work can you explain how diversion works yeah that's um we we have a dedicated uh uh diversion worker at our shelter and it's a very kind of it's it's we call it last-stage prevention it's trying to prevent somebody coming into the homeless emergency accommodation system um at the point when the turn up looking for a bed and i can give you a couple of examples we
had somebody who um came looking for a bed after they had been asked to leave the rental accommodation by the landlord after a long dispute about a broken lock and who should pay for it the tenant felt of his landlord's responsibility the landlord felt of his tenant responsibility we interviewed and paid for it and the tenant returned to to the accommodation uh we have the the the somebody else who is in a relationship and sleeping rough is part of a as part of a couple and when she um when that relationship ended you know our diversion worker spoke to her and found that it was possible for her to return back to the family home and there's lots of other situations where you find that there is some safe alternative and one of the things about becoming homeless um it's very easy to
get stuck and if you can find a safe alternative um without the without the without the risk of coming in trench and emergency accommodation very often things can be sorted out in a reason but amount of time you know because i know last year more people stayed in your emergency shelter than has ever been recorded before and unfortunately people were routinely turned away that must be very difficult to armage for staff to have to turn people away it's much more difficult for for for the person who might be turned away you know um so uh look at it's a it's a dreadful situation both it's a situation that is fixable it's it's not rocket science if we can do a lot more in terms prevention and remember as i said we're coming up the budget time and supports to ensure that people can continue to afford accommodation or living and could make a real difference in terms of
turning off the tap in terms of just uh are turning down the tap at least in terms of the number of people coming into into homelessness and if we you know back in the 1975 this state with population of two and a half million was um turning out more than 8,000 social houses every year last i think 2004 it was around the same number but now we've population of five million so we really have to uh do well out all the stops in terms of delivering more exits from homelessness and when you do those two things then you can get back to a situation where there's never an issue with capacity an emergency accommodation and you know you're not turning people away okay and i know uh we all know the one for work that is done at corksimon and i know there's over 12,000 individuals businesses and schools who supported corksimon last year so well don't
teach to every one of those how important german is that local public generosity to keeping your doors open well it's uh it's incredible where um we're 53 years on the go now would you believe and as noted we've never been under more pressure than we currently are we've never had such demand for services and the people of cork for the past 53 years have stood rocks all the behind us and then just pulled over by the generosity of people and that real sense the social solidarity that despite what everybody says still does exist okay and the sleep out on as it is with force that's common up isn't it that's common up and Friday i'd be doing it myself and still not still not still not too late for people to get involved no no on our website um they'll find details if anybody wants to sign up uh uh are to support somebody who is sleeping out with a donation will be very greatly received okay corksimon dot i e and we hope we get a dry mild night for us germans listen
thank you so much always a pleasure to speak with anybody from the Simon community because of the work that she do but thank you for joining us today thanks patricia good morning good morning that is at germans kavanaugh germans is ceo of the cork Simon community and if you want to have out their work at cork Simon dot i e oh eight one eight one oh three one oh three cork today on c103 if you're planning a holiday are a quick trip away you will likely rely on major booking platforms to secure your accommodation but how safe are these bookings really well today i'm joined by one of our own c103 colleague our newsreader damian shrinin who joins me in studio damian was preparing for a special trip to london with his daughter booked what looked like a perfect central london apartment did it through booking dot com and within hours of booking things took a rather suspicious turn after receiving a direct email demanding payment via an external link
damian dog a little deeper on each discover that the genuine property host had been hacked despite canceling his day and alert in booking dot com damian has been met with radio silence while the fake listing remains live for other unsuspecting travelers to book an underlash to say damian joins me in studio good morning to you damian thank you very happily good to see you now now this trip that you're planning to london with your daughter told me about the type of accommodation and have you been a regular user of booking dot com i will be a genius level five and book enough okay you book to love everything you know great service absolutely great and fantastic you know london's expensive yeah we're going for we're going for three nights so it's gonna go on and she and this is the funny thing she said dad will we have our um the same we'll be sleeping in the same room because she says i snore a lot so so i needed to find somewhere with a second bedroom which went in the apartment apartment was doing okay so you're up in the price straight away
yes yeah yeah yeah so i looked through apartments came across these this beautiful apartment 161 euros for three nights now that sounds very cheap but the the ratings were there it looked great everything was the reviews because i always got ready yeah reviews were brilliant fantastic i had a nine point eight i mean this was just ideal ideal so i got your book into bookage for the three nights i received that as as your north say and i got a message saying dear guests to confirm insecure reservation please follow the link and complete the required steps within 12 hours of receiving your booking confirmation thank you for your cooperation we look forward to welcoming you lovely picture and then a link when i click that link it was looking for the payments straight external website i sat again a bit suspicious um into it so as it as it uh i went on to i went on to the address that was actually listed for the apartment and it turned out it was a bookies
a booking shop all about one booking shop and waterloo was the actual address so they give you addresses so i mean so the picture that you were looking at wasn't in central public completely fake fake picture it turns out that the person who owned this property there had been hacked they don't actually have any properties in london okay they had hacked theirs okay so that property is for rent but nowhere else it's all my lord no there was four other um of the same kind of listings all around the same price you know the locations same kind of pictures great reviews all commercial property so i just put myself on google street view and i was looking at the addresses and i could see you know so because their businesses factories yeah booking shops one was a convenience store these were the listings but but you had to go look for that everything looked i mean i saw the screen i have a screen grab of the dear value customer email that all looked above board but what would have what made you suspicious of that because that looked taken me to an external site you know
because booking i you won't be cherished if i booking i always do that and i get you know you pay like 24 hours for you get there i have the property so for that you can cancel up to exactly yeah so i normally money is saved when booking dot com have it yeah when i've been put into a second website the view of is either whether it's their view of london 2026 dot com it the website is don't know but it looked a bit hmm what's going on here okay and they're pressing for payment within 12 hours when i've used booking so many times i've never had a problem and since then they've reviews have obviously changed on the listing the listing is still live yeah i've been in touch your booking account numerous times no answer back from them told them i'm just going to talk about it you know the day happened i just want them to take it down to stop some of the day absolutely and unfortunately you know some of the properties there now one star this was a scam there's no property on a prana raving after 30 hours of travel from Australia a message to see if we could leave luggage there i have an early check in no reply writing the number together recording it in the company had been hacked they don't have a property in london oh 40 hour journey from
Australia god help them someone else was swindles the apparently when i got there discovered it's a fraud i tried calling book and i come but i couldn't reach out anybody to help me traumatic for me in my family and these there just four we see that's the worst thing you turn up in the middle of london and you know and if you're new to i mean like that common all the way from Australia i was planning on spending a few nights in london and suddenly you're then suddenly then scrambling trying to get accommodation which is you say ain't cheap it ain't cheap not i think it's not not cheap and if you do it at short notice it's even more expensive so weld on the spot you spotted it and straight away because i was i was saying i had something similar happened to me earlier in the year and from the holiday i'm just back from now i booked directly with the hotel of stage with this hotel before and we were going with family members because my sisters 50th birthday was on so it was a celebration for her as well so there was a lot of people traveling a lot a lot of people staying at the hotel so we'd all booked individually and i got this i was here with marade actually i was about to leave the studio one day after work a couple of
months ago and i got this message on text saying that they needed that there was something wrong with my booking and that they needed to confirm to mr go to this link in blababla so i still got a i must have filled in something wrong and i just hit read i'll check that when i went home so i went home and i looked at the text message again and again you're everything looked yeah name of the hotel and whatever even down to the name of the head receptionist they'd even got her a name right so i looked at the booking reference so i went to my original email dug out the booking reference and the booking reference was wrong and i said oh i've got a problem here this is not from them so then i can't touch the hotel straight away in this or so i we've been hacked so but my sister-in-law had clicked and they had they she had gone through everything with them on this scam and they said we need all of the money and like that you weren't paying until you arrived they suddenly needed all the money upfront and she was at work and only that the account the holiday account was different and she didn't have that card with her she would have paid she would have been stung so you do have to be so careful have to ask
did you get new accommodation yeah 1150 euros which is why it's all 161 was great an extra nice but and booking you know the it was cancelled in the end so i didn't lose out that one and six one i suppose the advice that we kind of have here is if the message if you ever get a message that creates panic or time pressure but a cancellation stop you know the 12 hours thing was a bit strange for me you have to pay with the 12 hours and can i say my text message was if you don't contact us in 24 hours your cancellation has gone so there's always a sense of urgency that's one thing you know just don't be pressured if especially when you're using a book in a calm you never be pressured for that unless they give you that time when you have to it never click a link payment sync payment link sent in chat windows or WhatsApp never click payment links they're login to book in a calm directly and check your bank account call the hotel directly which is yeah I think you know yeah google your official website while i did obviously was google the addresses drop myself into street view and look at that that's that's very extreme i wouldn't
get out of that that's that's detective work so i've done yeah i've done that for the whole London trip i know exactly where i'm going i have an all printed off and you will be the person with the flag and we'll all be following you okay thanks for that we've already given away some fantastic prizes at anigwin.ie they've included luxury five star holiday breaks iPhone bundles and of course that's super trip to national tenisee and another massive price has just been dropped at this time it is a seven night Greek cruise but it's for a family of for what an amazing price if you win you'll be stepping on board the royal carabines award-winning odyssey of the seas included in the prize is a family cabin full board dining is included you'll sail to stunning destinations like Santorini you'll go to turkey to micken us and to naples and of course we're going to get you home because there's return flights from Dublin they're all sorted as well how do you enter when you go to anigwin.ie it is over over 18s only and full terms and

allowed on the trains the buses and the Lewis in Dublin and Sir Police God will want to get the Lewis in cork and if that comes in I'm assuming there'll be allowed on that too now the idea is that you know large dogs will have to be muscled and there'll only be so many dogs allowed on each boss and they'll have to be on a lead and there'll be lots of rules and regulations around it but it is already starting to make people nervous about it some of your thoughts coming in this morning Patricia no animals should be allowed on public transport I cannot believe that this has been introduced transport for Ireland they are they're not able to implement the no food or hot drink rules what happens when a dog comes on board maybe starts sniffing the food plus we already have anti social behavior on many other buses and trains already they're not able to control this so far how are they expected that they're going to be able to control animals being allowed on board as well Thomas said dogs and bosses it's okay once they stay on the ground while
on the boss I wouldn't fancy said Thomas sitting on a seat after a dog has been sitting up on it who by the way is going to police where the dog is located on the boss it looks like a lot of that is going to come back to the driver which I think is going to make it almost impossible for the driver to be able to enforce where the dog shouldn't shouldn't be we are told that one of the clear rules is going to be that the animals will not be allowed up on the seat so Thomas you shouldn't have to worry about that a dog won't be allowed up and sitting on the actual seat and then gets off and somebody has to sit down so that always be kept either under the seat or the larger dogs yeah it's hard to know where you put a larger dog maybe in where we'll choose go but then where where plans go but then what happens if somebody comes on that needs that space I don't know there will be a lot of things we'll certainly have to be ironed out ironed out and obviously if it's a small dog somebody can hold it in their arms or have it up on their lap but there's certainly now at the moment the rules state that they're not allowed to sit on a normal
train seat or a bus seat and another list of buses in big block capital letters as if she's shouting the text message to me and says Patricia the thought of dogs on public transport I'm sitting here this morning on my stomach is churning and instantly thinking about the hairs on the seats what about the wet floors etc oh you can understand was that wet dogs well that nobody likes I absolutely pity the drivers says this particular list or yeah it is all going to come back on the drivers uh for sure Mary says Patricia I walk my dog in baddened every single day and I've been doing it for the last 15 years at least trust me people are not able to pick up after their dogs in this country never mind talking about bringing their beloved pooch with them on public transport pet owners in this country are simply not educated enough in pet care so please please please do
not even consider allowing anyone on to public transport with their dog I just cannot begin to imagine the chaos that is going to take place if this is ever allowed to happen and that's from Mary a Kaleini listener says Patricia the 0700 cork to Dublin train one of the early trains in the morning is often full to capacity so much so there are often people standing the whole way to Dublin where is the dog going to go in the middle of all of that and how is an elderly physically restricted person expected to manage it's unfair to the dog as well because obviously it's going to be in a very strange environment and that's from a Kaleini listener and I know they're talking about putting in rules that the boss driver and I'm assuming the staff on the train can also say no if the train or the boss is too crowded or if there's already I don't know they would put a limit
on the number of dogs that would be my big or worry that you get two dogs and they don't like to look at each other and if a dog fight decides to happen in the middle of a train you know on the coverage of a train or on the middle of a boss you could imagine the panic that would break out there anyway listen we're just talking about it today this guy will hear a lot more about this because I say it's not too in until 2027 so we'll see if we can get as much information as we cannot but in the meantime thank you for your calls and comments as I say a lot of people just do not seem to be happy about it at all and by the way thank you to Elister when I was talking with Damien and he was sharing his London story and how he nearly got scammed into a booking apartment for himself and his daughter for a three-night stay that didn't AI is transforming sales support and every customer interaction in between but too often you're sold a different AI agent for every job that changes with Finn Finn is a single customer agent

around the building saying that he was going to give up cigarettes and we said well you know would you like us to sort of to help you in some way by having you on the program so we could be your conscience you know because you know that can often help people if they're trying to give up cigarettes so we welcomed him to the studio we spoke to him about it he was going to get a smoking cessation therapist involved and he probably should come back and eat at talk to us and he hasn't come back and smoking just because I can tell that listener he hasn't given up the cigarettes he has caught down in that he is not smoking enormous cigarettes he's smoking rollies which means he's still smoking but smokers will tell you that people that go from enormous cigarettes down to rollies it doesn't cast them as much as the normal cigarettes cast and cigarettes I was a smoker for many many years gave them up a number of years ago now and I'm never so grateful that I gave them up when I see the price of cigarettes now unbelievable unbelievable but my heart was out
to anyone who is still smoking because it is a tough tough thing to do to actually give them up but we'll keep an eye on our Damien and if he decides to go down the route of quitting completely we certainly will we'll have him back in a little bit of good news we don't often have good news when it comes to prices going down but the news has come out that we're all going to see a small fall if you've got car insurance or if you've got home insurance central bank are making a decision they are reducing as possible but affectionately known as the Quinn levy on general insurance and they are removing it to zero so that means that the insurance compensation fund levy will be reduced by 1% of the custody of policy for either on your car insurance but also on your home insurance now the fund was used to compensate policy holders after Quinn insurance collapse that was about 15 years ago and of course this fund ensures that in the event of any insurer going
into liquidation outstanding claims can still be funded so I think all of us see the need for this particular fund but listen none of us want to be paying extra levies and extra add-ons we seem to be paying enough for them at the moment anyway the state at the time was forced they had to put in a billion euro into the insurance compensation fund after Quinn went into liquidation and the move to reduce the levy to zero will mean a saving of if your motor insurance policy is around 650 euro it means you'll save about 650 on it I know it's not much but this will take every bit we can and the move marks the second change in the levy in two years reducing the reduction from 2% to 1% in January this year now the change will affect many customers with non-life insurance policy such as your home and your motor insurance if the firm that hold the insurance they've got to be registered with the central bank of Ireland which I'm literally most
insurance companies are the central bank's deputy governor of financial regulation in making the announcement said that the changes announced yesterday reflect the financial position of the and it follows now the full repayment of the outstanding loan balance back to the ex-checker punished that and the finance minister who's going to be busy week next week he has welcomed the decision to reduce the levy he says the reduction will have a direct positive impact on the cost of insurance for approximately 2.35 million private motor insurance policies and 1.3 million home insurance policies on their next renewal so as I say a little bit of good news a little bit of money back in our pockets and we're ready to eat is with us we got a whistle there okay yeah it's turned up too loud it must be in the headphones off yeah I could actually okay you're back with us we're going to be discussing Wednesday wisdom but I want to go to the phone lines because we always
welcome a WhatsApp voice note and this is from Ireland and this is on Wednesday wisdom hello Patricia and my red alien here regarding your Wednesday wisdom I say fair use to that woman she has a full-time job as does her husband and she is prioritising her time with her children and I say good for her I'd like to have a cleaner but I'd have to clean the house before they'd come in so I'm with writing on that I've had a few times we've had a cleaner and I've always done the cleaning before they arrive but so yeah well done and and you she I think I listen to her right she doesn't need to prioritise herself let me just give you some of the ones that I got and then I'll revert back to you in a second parade hi Patricia about Wednesday wisdom I know it's hard when you feel like you're being criticised no matter what you do my mother and I was always like that with me she'd find fault with practically everything I did and could sometimes berate me angrily over
the slightest thing that by the way wasn't wrong at all but that she disapproved of even though I did all of the cleaning the dusting the guiding the washing the ironing I did everything at home I will say that this lady this listener is very fortunate to have her lovely husband support her as I didn't have that at the time he my husband just expected me to put up with whatever she said and I'm assuming now that mommy and laws in the past here by the tone and by the way it's written but anyway my husband expected me to put up with whatever she said and his repeated shrugs left me feeling very very let down after years of trying to be the best daughter-in-law that I could eventually realise that some people like my mother-in-law just can't be pleased no matter how much you try so I would say to that listener that you are better off doing what feels right and works best for you don't let yourself be stressed in trying to live up to somebody else's expectations and don't forget to that you are giving somebody else a job with hours that suits
that person which is another positive benefit at the end of the day you're prioritising your beloved children over a bit of mapping cleaning and window wiping which is definitely the right decision so don't be hard on yourself just do with suits you and what you're comfortable with because that's all that really matters your children are very lucky to be at the centre of your lives clearly your great parents my great-grandson lovely lovely text thank you for that Julianne says her problem with bringing a cleaner into the houses doing the cleaning is fine but Julianne would be a little bit nervous that they might start moving things around innocently and then when you're looking for stuff afterwards you're working twice as hard to find it I don't know if that's a major problem with cleaners that they're moving stuff that you really couldn't find it at all high-priced shimmerade at the loft have a cleaner come into my house twice a week because they can't afford it tell lady ignore the mother-in-law and enjoy what she has now that's from Catherine in cork there is that bit of loads of people would love a cleaner but just can't afford it
absolutely yeah and I think you know as they say someone here I think it's Jamie and says an act you know only place expectation onto yourself I'm like for this lady just don't mind you know I think one of the messages you read out there the first one you read said that you know like don't live up to anyone else's expectations you don't need to you know you're you're you're in charge of your life and what mommy and law says is are anyone exactly or anyone absolutely and look as as as we can hear there's so many people would love to have a cleaner and I'm laughing at the voice note saying I'd have to clean before the cleaner comes I'd be the same I don't know I'd be tidying up like now and I'm one of those ones you know if you have visitors coming yeah my house is I mean there's only the three of us in there you know I'm God help or marry she she never she's very being blind she's very tidy and I know those sounds ridiculous she needs to know where all her bits are she's particularly tidy and she does only the two of me seven himself then so it doesn't really but every now and again I do a really good deep
clean yeah but particularly if there's visitors coming oh you please stuck in oh I would yeah my sister and I was coming to do the babysitter for the radio wards on Friday night and I love Sylvia oh I'm cleaner like mad I'm gonna be like mad are we to the point that my husband said I usually known who's coming down on Friday night but then I said when his mother comes down his mother I've gorgeous mother my my gorgeous mother not Mary in time at his gorgeous and I'd never feel under I'd always clean when she was coming I'd always have her room or you know all ready for in the big already and everything all the clean fresh sheets of our and I wouldn't she'd never put me on that under that kind of pressure what my sister would it's not weird that's unreal because my sister I've always said she has to travel from don't go oh God hope she's not listen she just sometimes online she has to travel from don't go oven to come to us in at Maddo and I swear to God she can spot a cobweb in midchester oh she's one of those she's the tidesiest house just to get there is there is that balance between obviously you want if you've guessed in your house you want
to give them a really lovely experience on your bedroom oh it is thick and spanner you wanted everyone to visit didn't you just like anyone who comes in and really like me after Katie in front of the newsroom dropped me home one night and I think she was saying oh I must go to the moon I said come in come in so she went to the moon I said before you go come in and have a look at the room she never been in my house before and I think she had to see that so she hadn't seen the before and after picture and there's no need to talk about before we live in the present after Trisha that's very well okay I'll just say a list of the swarm of wasps at the gable end of their house and she's open for advice to get rid of it I know whenever it's wasps it usually is calling the experts isn't it dope please don't attempt it yourself but if anybody can offer advice there please do now what else are you getting calls in about that you want to yes so the dogs on public transport wow yeah really took off lots of thoughts on that I was talking to Bill there before I come in and he was just talking about the fact you know that all dogs have to be licensed so if you know it's it's an offense to not have a dog license if you have a dog
so he said you know how were they going to control an unlicensed having an unlicensed dog on a boss now Bill went down the route of if the boss let's an unlicensed dog on our boss Aaron eating and abetting an offense and he said you can call me wild if you want but he said I said no I know where he's going you make a point absolutely there'll be dark wardens running around bosses and trains you have the dog license yeah but when you think about it it's just yeah there's a as you said earlier there's a lot to be thought out on this because I heard you saying about even bigger dogs I mean yeah you can't exactly you know make the big dog going under the seat and that and you know and then if it's in where the prams go and it's yeah there's a lot of things to be are in doubt here to make a work look I'm sure before it well you'd be hoping before they bring it in people are not that happy so so much negativity on the somebody just looking again load more WhatsApp's in somebody said the drivers can't police the rules of no feet on seats and no bags on seats so how are they expected to police dogs not being allowed on the seat
and then this is from his worried what about a dog defecating on the boss that would be a crazy idea dogs on bosses says somebody if is the dog has a number one it won't be too bad but what if he does is number two's what happens there I traveled on bosses recently sent another text or there's literally no room for dogs on the ground even a woman said next to me on the boss and I had to keep my shopping bag on my lap while she kept her bags inside her leg where is there room for dogs on a coach type boss that travels from Westcork into Cork City for example and that's the people asking about the pooing a lot of people yeah and you have to think from you know for the dog as well I mean they're so used to having their space and you know being able to move around and being comfortable whereas if you you know expect them to be in a tight space for it depends obviously on how long the journey is yeah there's definitely a lot here to be worked out to be worked out like an appreciate you know people who are nervous of dogs and I heard you know the message you
read it earlier about you know the person with asthma and those who have allergies and that and you know it would kind of make you think about you know why fix something that I broke it I mean there's a lot we know there's enough you know wrong with you know we hear a lot of bosses not going off we're being late and you know public transport we're encouraged to to travel sustainably and use it where we can but sometimes they can be unreliable and I like so then if you introduce the side where you you know bringing dogs and pets are on bosses are you discouraging a whole group another group of people who use bosses who won't be so comfortable with dogs on it like you know I suppose it's a question of where do the people who have the pets how do they get around now when they don't necessarily get to bring them on board you know so there's there's a lot to know yeah and we will look into it more detail because as I say it's not expected to be introduced until next year but I know that they did they asked for public consultation and well over 2.5
thousand people to win their top and safety words okay now again I I always feel when people are asked to put in their submissions on things like this you do it when you've invested interest how many of the two and a half thousand people have dogs that want to go and a bus are a train you know what I mean you just want your service because you mean there was a very positive now there were also people like our listeners this morning who has a family member who suffers from asthma and if they're anywhere near a dog it triggers an asthma attack so obviously for that person if they were on a bus and somebody got on I you saw somebody was able to get on with it the dog they'd have to get off and wait for the next bus yeah they'd be delayed for work for appointments absolutely and then people have fear if you're if you're I mean there are people afraid of dogs absolutely be an herbace wreck like I remember it kind of reminds me back in like when we'd be in primary school and maybe a dog from the local area might get out and the next thing they'd be outside the door should the class we really have to stop that was great that was a great exciting event if we try and go to the toilet yeah a robot the dog and have a look and you know there were it was like phenomenal
the fact that like you know but they have dogs don't they have therapy dogs now inside in schools they do yeah which is great idea with us yeah they sweet okay but not on a bus to retrain all right just on we're talking about make a mess here the day make a mess day I think maybe it was yesterday Monday Monday Monday yeah I heard you saying that I he came across make a mess when I was covering the courts the yeah it's the start of the the the start of the the the start of the new court sessions yeah so you mentioned or someone mentioned Rogation days yeah is it the same we've got two different messages in this one I'd come in yesterday a Rogation days of the Montetus in Wednesday prior to ascension Thursday holy water was put out on the land to help the crops to grow then I got a similar call today from Nora she was just saying in her youth michael miss was the last day for picking blackberries and then after that they were to be left to the fairies and then she mentioned as well like the Rogation days about being around ascension Thursday and I put in the holy water out yeah to help the crops to grow so that carries that one off
you know and whenever we have you know michael michael fortune you know actually mentions yeah we we have you man a couple of times every year and when he you know you know you will bring him on now come to sound now for Halloween for sure he love when the way he tells all of the stories and it's in certainly rural areas there's a lot of those traditions people still do it people still you know go out on me and they're washing up your men to wash your face with the Jew on the grass is one of the ones on me day I think that one is I get them all mixed up but anyway but yeah it's not one where you're truly is it the bread in her out at the door is that around you to the new year that's our new year yeah oh god I know we are you doing throw bread I do know what that one is that my brother and his family they do that so I remember somebody coming in the front door with bread in their hand maybe that was it is it throwing it into make sure your families go hungry is it is that something I'll check it out to make sure we certainly do it closer to new year to remind you everybody okay what's coming up on the program coming up
tomorrow and minister christopher will join you this is because an Asian hornet has been spotted in ringesky day so in corks so he'll be coming on just to talk about that and you know how you can report these calling for public vigilance following the capture of the single Asian hornet so we will talk to him about that and also a new citizens science app to help communities manage their corks river so you know sometimes the smaller streams they say they can keep an eye on every single you know but they'll be looking they've kind of divided you know the ecstatic invertebrate into groups so there's the good guys and the bad guys so if you're kind of keeping an eye out for which kind of invertebrates are in the streams in your area and that way then they can kind of see how the water quality is and that it's quite fascinating really so we're looking forward to hearing about that but also be talking about this an issue at cumn hatreds this team it's called the domino team now there there's up special for this because they're making changes to it and they're redistributing the staff that run the domino team now be joined by amy fits dera tomorrow she's
a recently a new mom and she had a baby boy recently but she's also a midwife so she's seen it from both sides she's seen how it works from a midwives perspective but she's also a vina service user herself and so the domino care it's it's in and out of hospital it's a system women are seen by a team of about eight senior midwives are working with the GP so amy will be able to tell us about it from both sides and why it's so disappointing to see that it's being I take it this is down to co-packs in ciohation and lack of staff and yeah to read about it because of short staffing and again he was ever ever had and this is not to take from gynecologists or obstetricians but anybody will tell you a good midwife is what is what you need at the end of the bed when you're about to have a baby you know and they've saw so much experience as well okay look forward to talking about that tonight and lately we'll also be talking about the old quark prison building this came up with the city council meeting on monday you'll be joined by councillor ken collins there was a unanimous vote at that meeting to add the old quark prison to the register of protected structures
but there are plans you know for a replacement prison and so it kind of is I guess maybe a step back to that but it'll be interesting to see where it goes could they find another site for a new quark prison and because ken collins he's saying he's hoping they're going to put a museum there instead and you know see it as a heritage site so they're they've unanimously voted now to put it on the protectors to put it on the register of protected structures it's just fine I don't know at the moment isn't it is and they'd like to keep it in some form that it could be you know therefore maybe you know as new generations come along and you know see it as a museum place to learn about the history and that and so that's what they're hoping to do and then but as they say there is plans to demolish the building construct a new prison there but they're they're fighting that they don't all right listen we thank you thank you thank you marade and teopark rambling house just got a text in to say the rambling house is until night at half past seven and it has been suggested it's a nice place to go after the bad weather yes today thank you for that that is on tonight
half past seven teopark a rambling house marade it's now taking your course particularly for questions for Peter Dowdell oh 818 103 103 if you want to text or WhatsApp your questions you can to 0862 103 103 court today on c 103 and joining us peter dowdell the Irish guard nerd dot com good afternoon to you peter i thought the summer was over yesterday Trish but it's back to us today i think i did and actually can on the breakfast show this morning was telling me that as we head into next week it looks like there's a bit of a turn in the weather and it's going to get nice and warm again so we'll take that oh for god's sake we'll take it to what we've no choice well after the wind and the rain yesterday goodness me there was a lot of i say a lot of damage done yesterday certainly when i was driving back from the city driving back to at mall or the amount of leaves on the ground but the amount of branches of trees big-ish branches as well it's a kind of a near over the next few days take a look at your garden
and see if anything get loosened yeah and i think i mean certainly judging what the claim it's been doing for the last couple of years like what they've told us would happen is happen our periods of rainfall are becoming more excessive and our winds are getting stronger so that is happening so anything you can do now to um to kind of preemptive i mean it's going to happen we are going to have storms we are going to have high winds uh so if there's anything at risk in your garden i would say you you will manage it far better the nature will if you know what i mean if like you don't want the tree coming down on top of a vulnerable building or a vulnerable tree coming down on top of a building or a car or anything like that so much better to take action now when advance of it yeah definitely okay let's concentrate into questions Rita could you ask Peter please how do i get rid of and prevent vine weevil also how do you deal with rust unplans thinking you in advance vine weevil is probably the second most common are problematic
garden pests we have in our gardens that just after stokes and snails right and it does on told damage the vine weevil beagle is like a black beetle that you'd see during the summer months and he's not the one who's actually what he he's no longer causing the damage he was calling causing the damage when he was the grub um but you see that the damage on the leaf because he eats from the outside in so the the way i always describe it for those of us at ratio were old enough to remember the old weekly bostick it's that we used to and the he was clip a bit off the side of it you remember of every journey that's what a vine weevil damage looks like it's the old weekly bostick it's you can see the bits eaten from the outside in right and it's not from you won't see holes in the middle of the leaf but that's classic vine weevil damage that's the adult people doing that but that's that's just a symptom that the damage was done earlier so the grubes do most of the damage they feed on the root system under the soil um during the kind of earlier in the year really and
you can't see them obviously so the you you kind of if you know what you're looking for you might notice it like a plant becoming weak or a plant becoming very loose in the ground um and if you go and take it it comes way near in your hand that's because the grubes have been eating away in the roots so to answer how do you control it there are chemicals in the market which I wouldn't under any circumstances advise you to use because they can be very very damaging um but there are also nematodes available now a nematode is a biological control trish where you introduce a a parasitic nematode to feed on the vine weevil grubes totally harmless to unless you're a vine weevil grub totally harmless to the garden and safe to use and very effective the only thing is you really I can't remember the exact soil temperature or the exact temperature the soil needs to be but really you be using it from kind of April through to August maybe September it's expected to be getting a bit cold to do it now so yeah the other thing then it goes so you can get yourself a nematode male order but as I said it'll be next spring before you be looking at using it the other thing of course it constantly goes back to the natural balance which I'm always
talking about so if you can ensure a wide diversity of species are present in your garden such as birds hedgehogs all these things these will feed on the vine weevil's too so the more of the more wildlife and the more variety you have in the garden the better the garden is going to be in general then when it comes to rust which was the second part of the question yeah that's a fungal infection right so rust thrives fungal infections thrive in a plant where there's poor air circulation so again it's comes back to cultural control here so good pruning to ensure good air circulation through the plant in the first instance now remove any of the leaves or the branches with rust so it's kind of a bit like ourselves when we get infection if possible remove as much of the infection as possible and then treat the infections you could do something like copper sulfate mix with water but then increase the plant's resilience to get in the infection again and you'll do that by by improving the soil quality around the plant to create a healthy plant my own the Irish garden
is new tree chair which is a biochar based plant food will do exactly that it stimulates the the microbes in the soil to make the plants healthier and more resilient towards infection in the first place okay good luck with that Rita Mary says Kajas Peter if I should cut back my hydrangia now as it's winter to went very brown during the heat wave there are a few green shoots appearing again those one sure what to do it's it's just for aesthetics really at this time of the air treasure you can cut them back now hydrangias are you can wait left the winter and I would suggest wait left the winter because the the the the dead flower heads and of course they all went brown early this year because of the extreme heat we had mine included I think mine went quicker than anybody else is just to to laugh at me but anyway I would leave them on the plant because they will offer a certain amount of protection from frost and any and even if we get snow during the winter they act a bit like a blanket above the tender green shoots and the nodes beneath so I
being planning to leave them if you don't think it looks too untidy and not just cut it back then early spring later winter early spring the other side of the winter now a lot of people will probably identify with Sean in Mallow who says he's lawn is looking absolutely shocking after the summer it's patchy full of moss is it too late to throw some grass seed or have I missed the boat entirely with the weather churning I'd say if moss if he's got a lot of moss in that in the lawn I would scarify it now first so the best months to scarify at our march in September so I mean you could turn easily get away with it now so what is what happens when you're scarifying your tree shoots like a mechanical rake where you're you're physically pulling out the patch and the moss out of the lawn and removing it from the soil surface and again going back to the soil so if you can improve the the soil surface and the quality of the soil that would improve your grass growth and so if you did that scarify that you know the lawn would look even worse before it looks better but you're you're creating the conditions for it to improve so scarify it to
remove the moss that's attached and then put on some fresh seed are you too late I would say the textbook will say yes absolutely kind of September that the months forget it on after that you're late but but if you put it on now or even next week who knows obviously what the temperatures are going to be like the worst case scenario is if we get a sudden dip in temperature you might get a hundred percent germination and your lawn might be a bit yellowy for the start of the season next year but I wouldn't worry too much about that it'll grow through it anyway so I mean you've nothing to lose I would scarify it to get rid of the moss and and touch and put on some fresh seed but yeah definitely sooner the better know at this stage okay Mary is down in West Corquish she said they had a wild day yesterday with wind howling in after the Atlantic but I got her thinking I know you spoke about the hydrangeas but she also has fuchsias and she's wondering should she hack them all back to protect them from the winter storms I know you mentioned about hydrangeas is it the same with the fuchsias when Mary was saying she'd a wild day in West Corquish yesterday was kind of wondering where this was going the weather was wild great I've had many
a wild day in West Corquish myself okay the fuchsias I would say leave as well leave them like if they're big enough that they might physically get up rooted or anything like that certainly you could cut them back but if they're just like nature is amazing Christian plants are amazing in terms of aerodynamics and things like that so if they're in good health and they're not too big I've been trying to leave them and cut them back against start of the spring okay and a final one from Kira who's one of these giving it a goal the kind of people that you love she said I went out last weekend for the first time ever and I bought myself some spring bulbs David L's tulips and all sorts now I'm sitting here looking at them too I put them straight into the ground are what is it too early I would say it's a bit too early actually even though traditionally you know you kind of plant bulbs from September on but over the last few years let me spoken about it a lot on this showtourish I leave it later to the temperatures really dip because as you just said at the start of the piece the forecast for next week is for temperatures to creep up again which is great but that confuses the bulbs the bulbs go
in in the autumn they expect the ground to be cold and the temperatures to be dropping and then when the temperatures increase in the spring that's when they start coming out up again right so if we plant them now and if we get a warm spell during October it could trick them into growing early so I would say hold off but unsaying that it's much of a muchness at this time of the year we're into October tomorrow so it's much of a muchness but a nice idea and particularly if as she says it's our first time during it she's giving it a go plant a few this weekend but not all of them plant a few more the following weekend and do it over the next few weeks and then of course you're staggering the flowers then in the springs you'll get a longer succession of flowers as well and I guarantee if you plant them in the ground bulbs are very rewarding because you put them in you forget all about them and suddenly you get them in the spring and you'll have got the bug you'll be addicted yeah yeah and it's a lovely thing it really is a lovely thing to start and if you've got kids I'm always saying plant them with the children as well because they will really love the magic of these gorgeous flowers growing okay we leave it there Peter thank you for that we'll chat again next week a pleasure to have a lovely week that is Peter Dowdell the Irish guide
