Cancer Treatment Breakthrough: Direct Injection Sparks Body-Wide Immune Response

0:00On March 17th, researchers at Rockefeller University have shared promising early results from a clinical trial of a new cancer immunotherapy injected, straight into tumors, in a small study of 12 patients, six autumor shrinkage, and two reached complete remission. This approach modifies CD-40 drugs, which rev up the immune system to fight cancer cells. Traditional versions go through the bloodstream and often cause severe side effects like inflammation or liver damage, but direct injection brought. Only mild issues. The real surprise came when the treatment sparked a body-wide immune response. Tumors not injected also shrink or vanished, thanks to activated immune cells spreading the attack. For example, one patient with advanced melanoma had dozens of tumors on the leg and foot, but injecting just one on the thigh cleared them all after. Several doses. A breast cancer patient saw skin, liver, and lung tumors disappear from treating only the skin one. Larger trials with nearly 200 patients are now under way to build on these findings and test the therapy further.
