The Browns return home this week to host the Carolina Panthers with a chance to get off to a 2-1 start to the season after their win over the Buccaneers in Week 2. Mary Kay Cabot, Ashley Bastock and Dan Labbe kick off the Wednesday edition of the Orange and Brown Talk podcast by digging into the things they’re watching this week as the Browns prepare for the Panthers. They discuss whether the Browns can get the run game going this week, what to expect from Deshaun Watson and a big four days for the Browns beginning on Sunday. Then Lance Reisland joins the podcast to break down what he saw on film from the Buccaneers game. Lance and Dan talk Watson, the run game and the defense. Then they do Lance’s question of the week: The Mt. Rushmore of dad sayings. Hey everybody, welcome to the Orange and Brown Talk podcast. Dan Lobby, Mary K. Cabin, Ashley Bassdock with you here recording this on Tuesday. Lance Ryzen is going to join us in the second half to look back at that film from the Bucks game. But let's get to it as we kind of start to get into this week here, Mary K. With the Browns getting back to availability on Wednesday, getting ready for the Panthers on Sunday, trying to move to 2 and 1. And I've got to tell you, I don't really know what I think of the Panthers at this point. Maybe we'll get into that a little bit. But as we get into week three here of the season, what are you thinking about as we kick things off? Well, really my overarching takeaway from the Bucks game was how much Dishon, Watson's victory and performance really changed the course of where we're at right now. And the course of where this could all go. And right now, there's still in, let's try to win games mode. Instead of let's see what we have in Shadour Sanders, which was going to happen if he didn't win that game or if he didn't play well in that game or maybe both.

So now it's an opportunity for him and for the Cleveland Browns to try to stack a couple of wins. And I don't think we should overreact to what we saw in Tampa because in addition to all the good things the Browns did, I also thought the Bucks look pretty horrible on both sides of the ball. So I don't really want to get too crazy in thinking, oh geez, the Browns are going to win nine games now this year. But I do think it means that they can give it a whirl. They can see what it might be like if they go out there and they try to win some football games and try to string together maybe six and seven, six or seven victories this season. Yeah, it's very much kind of the pendulum swings of the league where after week one, it was the sky was falling, this things that disaster, they're going to go on 17. And you don't want to overreact like that after week one. And I think the same thing goes for week two. We still know so little about these teams and that includes the Cleveland Browns like

okay, what was real in week two, what was real in week one? Is the defense going to revert back to what we saw in week one or is it going to kind of continue to build on what they did? Is to Sean Watts are going to continue to build on what he did. I just think, you know, for like I said, Ashley, for as little as I know, we're kind of feel about the Panthers right now. I could kind of say the same thing about the Browns. I don't really quite know what they are after two games. No, it's hard, right? Because it's kind of like we're one of these, a one off. And if so, which one? And you know, look, we've covered this team the last two years where they come out and win a game or two that no one expects them to win. And at the end of January, they still have five wins or three wins, right? Like it can happen. And sometimes weird things happen, especially early in the year. So I think that's like the takeaway is we just need to see more. And, you know, I'm I'm curious though, just to Sean Watson, given his veteran experience,

and given the fact that he is a notoriously slow starter, if this is really him building. Like, I certainly think there's a possibility of that. And again, the defense, I think, is going to have to hold up. And the offense around Dishon is going to need to stop getting boneheaded penalty is in doing the stupid things that are only hurting them. And I think to Mary Kay when you kind of look at, you know, to your point, like the box really is like what makes this hard is, you know, I think we all feel like the Jaguars are pretty good. I don't know if the box are good or going to be good. I know that there was a chance people were looking at them as maybe a team that could win the NFC South, but now who knows? Like that team that we saw, I mean, all the turnovers in week one and then the way they played in week two, and I did, you know, we should give the Browns credit for, you know, what that defense did and what they were able to do on offense. But that that looks like a very flawed football team. And that's what makes these first couple of weeks of the season hard.

In a lot of these cases, you don't even know, again, going back to the Panthers. We don't even know who's good, who's bad, who's like, it's hard to really stack yourself up against teams other than kind of that elite group at the top or that group at the bottom that you know is just terrible. Right. I mean, you really don't know what you have in an NFL team until you get to maybe like week six or week seven, maybe even sometimes week eight, right? It takes a while to figure all of that out. And by the time we get to week eight, is there going to be anybody left standing? Will there be any starting quarterbacks left in the NFL by week eight? I mean, it's ridiculous how they are dropping. It's really unfortunate. It's bad for the game and unfortunate for the players, obviously. But no, we don't really know yet. We don't really know yet. And we don't want to overreact to what we saw. But what I do think is that it was a confidence booster for both sides of the ball. And they have something to build on. On the offensive side of the ball, Dishon has his

growing relationship with Denzel Boston to build on. He needs to get that going with some other guys. I don't think he has enough of that yet with very many other guys. And you need to see that because if they start to just take Denzel Boston out of the game, then you could be in a little bit of trouble. So he needs to keep working on his timing and chemistry with Harold Fanon Jr. In particular, and then also Casey and Jerry was targeted, I think once in that game. So he needs to keep developing his supporting cast. And then the running game, I mean, the running game is a joke right now. And it's going to be hard to sustain a good passing game if you don't have a good running game. And they need to figure it out. They need to find out is it their blocking schemes? Is it their personnel? What is it? They have to find out and they have to fix it because if they don't have a running game, it's going to put way too much pressure on Dishon.

Well, and especially because Dishon in this game against Tampa, it's not like he was slinging the ball all over the field. I mean, it was a lot of shorter stuff. It was quicker stuff. And it was effective. It worked obviously. And I think Todd tried to do a little bit of replacing the run game with kind of that quick passing game, but they are going to have to be able to run the football. And the good news is they're playing a team this week that has been very bad against the run in their first two games. I think they are the worst team in the league in yards, yards per carry right now. A lot of so, you know, Chicago had success running against them. The Falcons just had success running against them. Now, I believe John Robinson is going to have success running against anyone. But and Ben Johnson is, you know, awesome at running the football. So I don't know how much of it is just the people that Carolina faced or maybe their run defense is just bad. But Ashley, if they're going to get this run game going, it's going to be, it has to be against a team like this because Carolina has been bad against the run in these first two weeks. You gave me just enough time, Dan, to look up the numbers while you were talking. And yeah,

they're ranked last in the league in rushing yards per game at 224 per game so far. And rushing yards per play averaging 6.31 rushing yards per play. So I know at one point on Sunday, I looked over at Mary Kay and said, oh, Quinshaw and Jenkins is only averaging 1.8 yards per carry right now. Like, obviously, that's not good enough. They need to get more rushing yards total. And that's going to start with that with the yards per carry, I think. So I'm, I'm really curious because I agree that it's a it's a prime time game to to be doing that for them right now and just try to get something, anything going. Yeah, and it felt like to Mary Kay when I went back in and watched it didn't, you know, I think some of it's Quinshaw and I think some of it's the line, you know, these guys are still kind of trying to figure each other out. And that's another part of this. This line has never played together. So even with the performances they're getting from like Fano and Barber and, you know, I think the line's been

okay. They also haven't played much together. And I think that really shows up. That could really show up in the run game because you really, with all the moving parts that go into that, you're just not seeing a bunch of things opening up and Quinshaw is not really creating much on his own. So it's just been, it's just been a slog right now on the ground. It really has. And that's why they are lucky that Dishon can make some plays with his legs. And we know that he has been the leading rusher in the first two games of the season, not with a lot of yards. He had 22 yards in this past game, but Quinshaw only had 21 on 12 carries for a 1.8 yard average. So that's just not going to cut it. It's not going to cut it. And of course, they don't have Dylan Samson. Not that Dylan would have been, you know, pounding it out on the ground necessarily. He would have been more so involved in the short passing game. But I still think that

they have to do something in the running game, starting as soon as possible. And I don't know what they can do. I don't know if they need to add someone. I don't know if they need to change up their personnel. Try a little bit more jumbo, which they did in this past game some, but maybe go down that road a little bit more. See if somebody else can run block for you better. I don't know. I don't know what they can do, but it's a problem. And once it lasts for two weeks, then it starts to become a trend. And I don't know. I asked Quinshaw yesterday, are you 100%? Do you feel like you are back 100% and he said, yes. So I don't think that that's necessarily the problem. But yeah, they've got to figure it out. And maybe you do something with your, you know, more with your fullback. I don't know. I don't know. But that's one area of definite target for improvement. So Ash, as we go into this week, week three, what are you kind of thinking about

or looking at for this game? Yeah, I mean, I'm really thinking about if this defense can build off what was a really solid ending, right? I mean, they went out there. Dan, I know you wrote about it after the game. They held everything down after the long delay. And it felt like they got their swagger back, right? It's some of that that we were used to seeing with this defense at its best over the last three years, even though the personnel has changed so much. So now I think it's going to be about maintaining that and not feeling so high off of that win that you come in the following week and start getting beat and making some dumb mistakes again, right? And I also think too, Tyson Campbell is just going to be a thing to watch this week with the secondary because, you know, he made it sound like that it was just like precautionary that he didn't come back out there. But we do know he's been battling multiple things. Todd Munkin said that yesterday,

even in the official stats and everything during the game, it was that he was questionable to return with that ankle he's been dealing with and a hip. So it's kind of another week of Tyson Campbell watch for me too, because he's obviously a huge part of what they do back there and some of those younger guys held it down like Miles Hardin, like Mackay Blackman, obviously, who was in there at the very end. But now I think it's going to be about can those guys do that again and can this front continue to push the envelope and get pressure? I thought they did a better job of it. I'm still kind of waiting obviously. Everyone is for that Jared verse breakout game, but he said to that he did it did not feel this week like he was trying to play hero. So I think it was a step in the right direction for him. It felt like we noticed him more. But, you know, we need him to get home to the quarterback at some point. So maybe he'll be able to take down Bryce Young. Yeah, I'm still a little concerned about the past rushes a whole and they did blitz more on Sunday. So that I think that helped obviously create pressure. And by the way, I think you also

saw to me the really encouraging thing was you mentioned Miles Hardin, like he bounced back and looked like, okay, maybe you can't keep this guy out there and play him in the slot. I thought Quincy Williams had a good bounce back game. He strikes me as a guy that when he's able to play downhill, he's really good when he's not that that's maybe when it gets a little iffy, but there were there were positive steps there, Mary Kay, but they do still kind of need to you know, Mason Graham's off to a good start. Obviously, we know Malik Collins is good inside. But there's still just not a ton of depth there. And I still think they're trying to figure out that other edge rush spot too. So that, you know, they might need to keep blitzing. And at some point, I don't know if it's going to be this week. I don't know if it'll be against, you know, Aaron Rodgers and the Steelers. At some point, they will face a quarterback or a passing game that you're just not going to be able to get away with blitzing. And I do think that they're going to have to rely even more on their interior rushers. Now, fortunately for them, Mason Graham has kind of come alive

this season. Dan, like you have been predicting that he would. I call us Mason Graham truthers. That's what we are. The people that believed in Mason. Yeah, so good, good for you on that. So good to see him get his second sack already in as many games. So that kind of boats well for the future. I think Malik Collins is going to continue to get a little stronger each week once he gets confidence in his quad. That's a big injury to come back from. That's a that's a very, very challenging and grueling injury to recover from. So I think he's going to get better. And then I think I'm seeing flashes out there from my call. I think my call is starting to pop a little bit. And I think that's good. So what they aren't getting from the outside, they might have to get more of from the inside. And then if the outside guys aren't getting the job done, then you're going to have to rotate some of your inside guys like hall to the outside. And maybe

others as well. So they're going to have to get creative. And Mike Routenberg is going to have to dig deep and find a way to get some pressure on the quarterback. And like you said, they did a nice job with it in this past game. They had a lot of pressures. I think they had 20 pressures in that game, which is great. Especially when you're going against, you know, Tristan Wurfs and people like that. So it was good. But it needs to get better. It needs to get better. They need to get a few more sacks. And they just need to keep building on it. And when I look at this defense, it's the same thing with the offense. We thought the defense was going to have more of a seamless transition. I think I think we all thought that. And now it's pretty evident that it's not an extension of Jim Schwartz. There are a lot of new things going on the defense, on the defense. There's new personnel. And there's a new vibe and a new way of doing things and a new

play collar on defense. So they're finding their way the same way that the offense is. But I did think once again that the Tampa game was it was a good confidence booster, especially to close it out the way that they did in the end. And of course, I know it's a completely different situation if Ted Hersh hangs onto that ball in the end zone. Completely different conversation, right? We wouldn't be talking at all about how the defense did better. But to count it's a different situation if Denzel Boston holds onto that fate and keeps his feet in balance. So that's just kind of football. It is. But I do think that it was for sure something to build on. And I think it'll be easier coming home. They're going to have the juice of the crowd behind them. They're coming off of a victory. It's probably not going to be a feels like temperature of 105 or whatever they've had. It's been really, really hot and exhausting. So I think that I think they're going to get their mojo. I think

Grant Delpit very close to making some big plays. Same thing with Denzel Ward. Some of these guys are really ready to kind of break out a little bit. And I think it's coming. And it does award by I was looking up stuff. I wanted to look up JC Horn today. And again, I have a love hate relationship with PFF grades. But I like it when they match the eyeball test. Denzel Ward has a very good PFF grade to start. And it seems like just watching. And he's off to a really great start too. So that's good news for this defense. Just real quick here. As we go into this game, kind of what I'm thinking about a little just slightly bigger picture. I think this is a really interesting four days coming up for the Browns when they play this Panthers team that I just I don't know who they are. I stuff like like I think they're okay. But like I don't know if they're good. I don't know if they're just kind of one of those middle of the road teams or not. And then they play this weird Steelers team that listen, as long as Aaron Rodgers is your quarterback, you're just going to be a weird team. And like he's he doesn't want to get hit.

But he's still sort of effective at times. And you know, it's just this four days is really interesting to me. Ashley because like I don't think the Browns are going to be three and one next Friday. But could they be two and two? Could they somehow be three and one if the ball bounces? I like I don't know. This is just a really because of the two teams they're playing and because of how weird they are and because of how weird the Browns are right now. I think we're going to learn a lot about this team over you know once we get to that Sunday to Thursday stretch. Yeah, you know, I texted you guys before we started to record this and I'm like I really don't know anything about the Panthers, right? Like I'm going into this week. I'm watching their game against the Falcons and what I do know is the Falcons obviously don't look good, right? So that makes it so much harder I think to judge what the Panthers and what Bryce Young are doing right now. It's tough to guess. And then yeah, like the Steelers, the Browns had no business beating the Steelers at home last year and they did. They had no business beating them at

home in 2024 and they did like things are always weird between these two teams and then you add in Aaron Rogers coming off of a game in which he says paraphrasing here that he has to be better at letting the coaches know what plays to call so that it works better. Like we just need to take a moment for that one, two, I think because I mean you just don't know like there is as it ranges it sounds and for as much angst as there was after week one, there is a chance that this team could be three and one at the end of this weird four to five day stretch. And to like by the way, there's always teams every year that are like three and one or whatever that and maybe they're not really a three and one team like in the end it's going to even out but for whatever reason the ball bounces their way in a couple games early, they win a game that has a two hour 12-minute rain delay and then like I just don't know and so I obviously have not decided what I'm going to pick in this game. I think I'm I don't know but I guess my point is Mary-Camp sitting there watching

that Panthers Falcons game and the Panthers are just killing the Falcons and I'm just not blown away by what I'm watching and I don't know if that's because it's just sort of turned into a preseason game for the Panthers or if it's just because I just I don't know I just don't know who they are and I could say the same thing about the Steelers and the Browns so again I think we're in for an interesting four days starting on Sunday. Well think about the fact that the Panthers talk about we don't know who they are they gave up 59 points in their first game 59 points so that definitely says right there that nobody knows who the heck this football team is right now. The other thing about this I think is that Dishon Watson is going to have to deal with booze at the stadium and we don't know how he's going to handle that. We don't know if he's going to crumble under the weight of those booze or if he's going to stick up his proverbial middle finger

and use it as fuel. We do not know the answer to that but I can tell you this he's got to be anticipating it the Browns have to be anticipating it and they have to have some strategies they have to have something in the toolbox for this because it's going to happen no matter what he did in Tampa there's a segment of the fan base that hasn't embraced him and some never will. So that is going to happen and he didn't make anything easier on himself with what he said after the bills game. So I don't know if there's anything that he can do from a verbal standpoint anymore to try to get back some of the fans I think he's just got to go out and play good football but that's another big X factor for this game. Yeah it'll be it'll be interesting what I'm learning is when you play NFC South teams things are just weird like the weirdest division in football just anytime you're around those teams things just things are just weird the vibes are just always weird.

Welcome back to the Hunter Brown talk podcast and I'm joined now as I am every Tuesday to go over the film from Sunday's game Lance Ryzen Lance how are you? I'm doing very well Dan. How are you my friend? Doing well. I got a chance to catch up on the game the other day ready to go ready to talk about that win over the box So look, let's just keep it simple. Let's start with the guy everybody's talking about just on Watson

A good bounce back game for him Obviously, you know, not a not a super aggressive day I wasn't throwing the ball down the field that didn't necessarily need to what did you see from Vashon in this game? Well, you know that I've heard that you know people have asked me well He can't throw behind line of scrimmage all the time But that you know in this type of offense. It's a little bit different than what they've had in the past So getting into the right place sometimes allows you to do that if you look at like I played like The bubble screen the case you can't sectional that's an inside zone So sometimes to loosen things up You have to be able to take what they give you and you know He did hit a bang eight for the touchdown. He hit a deep out route to Fanon so it's about for me in this offense is about taking advantage when you get those chances I just thought the rhythm the pace and I thought his drops are really good. I thought he controlled what you can control and Everything that you know, it's it's an interesting thing because it's hard to There's such a taste people have in their mouth whether it be good bad whatever it is It's hard to really evaluate what you see if you evaluate what you will see it was 24 30 You got a drop by a fan and you got a drop by boss and for a touchdown

The jury duty fell down on a hit so I mean on our out route So you're talking 27 to 30 really on time with the ball fundamentally So I did a lot of really good things and he's a quarterback that you can win with not because of but he's a quarterback You can win with same same thing they did is a very it was a very pretty like Game In terms of the the pressure that was on him the thing I thought he played really well and the bottom line is they won And that's still for me has to be a priority So when people ask me about the how he played out he won and that's the most important thing and then you Once again, just like I said last week when I did not think he played that poorly you wake up the next morning You watched a film fix it and flush it and now it's time to go again Well, and to me this was the example of you know, so you have the comment during the week of you know The media wants to throw for 400 yards and five touchdowns and might like my pushback on that was like no People just want to see you be efficient. They want to see you protect the football. They want to see you

You know move the teeth. This is the type of game people want to see from you And maybe not even you know this like it doesn't have to be Even that good of a performance I think but the bottom line is like You know, you can't throw that interception on the first drive You know, you can't put your offensive line in bad positions with some of those deep drops like there was two inconsistent a week one He was consistent a week two he distributed the football. I think it was I wrote this and I forget I think it was nine different players got targeted And a good number of players got more than five targets like This was the type of game That I think people want to see out of him just an efficient game where you're playing point guard You're moving the offense and being opportunistic with your legs This is what the Browns need from it. They don't need Houston to shine lots and that guy whatever forget that guy They need this guy that they got on Sunday Yeah, I think you said it right So efficient was one thing protect the football you've heard me say this a bunch This is another one that gets probably old for you But end every drive at a kick and if you do that you got a chance because you do play good defense

And there's a couple times where they did get a couple first downs and they were able to put them deep and you know You play complimentary football and you do all these different things that help when games that don't Always show up like you said like just a couple You know only have a 20 plus yards run But those were impactful runs on third down right he uses legs really well to get some key first downs and Making sure like the one play to fan and where he makes the guy miss and they get a simple first down It was what six yards whatever was but just a really good football play and then he had a good design by munking on the touchdown Past the white heart now even though I think one of the things that gets me most excited was by the rookie Was first of all we talked about Garbage time and the touchdown from Boston a week one everybody's like that meant nothing and you and I talked about it You know didn't agree with that because of what it did for Boston And it's slowed the game down a little bit. It looks like you know, it just helps doesn't all it doesn't mean everything But it helped and you see that he gives you you know and one of the things I talk about with this offense When you talk about being efficient. I thought one of his best throws of the day was they they're moving the ball before the touchdown

They get a they get a tackle for a loss. It's it's second down to 12 He takes a really good drop hits an out route to Boston. It's third down to pushing a manable Manageable situation so it's not a huge throwdown field But it's a pretty big throw in a big moment. I thought that was probably his best throw and then you go to Boston on the on the touchdown No, Boston said he alerted to it and Boston said the thing that not only cited me about was Watson was Boston said when he knew he alerted it. They was come to him So Boston also sell saw them rolling to cover two Boston also knew that the linebacker the Mike linebacker was gonna open towards the trips away from him Because he wasn't a reduced split to the left the backer and Mike backer always opens to the trip side if you're in zone 100% of time from Peewee to NFL and then he knew he had to widen his release a little bit to widen the outside linebacker The Shaw's job was to keep the mic there and he anticipated it and when you saw people talk about anticipation for me That comes with confidence. So if he alerted into it

He was confident that what the coverage he saw and was able to deliver it on time That's part of anticipation is no one where you're going with the ball because you read the coverage well done by everybody involved there Yeah, no one where you're going with the ball because of the coverage knowing your guys gonna be there Yep, when you throw that ball that and that takes time on task So look this was a positive step forward for to Sean Watson We'll see what happens in week three Maybe this is the start of something maybe it's a one-off. We don't know But at least you're going into this game with a little bit of hope that like okay Maybe they figured some things out in week two well then you know I always say it's one of those things It's it's the dad getting too high too low. So I didn't think he played that poorly in week one I you know people disagreed with me and I don't I'm not necessarily saying they were totally wrong with some of the like you were Matching some of the things that he did poorly no doubt about it But part of the reason he played wrong a played poorly was his teammates But that's also part of the reason he played well this week, right? So it kind of goes both ways where there's too much credit too much blame So some of the things that went wrong

If you look some of the operation stuff if you look at some of the protection stuff that's that all on him But when you're playing bad it's all on you and then so some of those things that issues he had We're because of his teammates also part of him. That's the same thing this week Some of the good was because of him But some of the good was really because of his teammates, right? And that's important when you're talking about like the point guard You just have to put yourself in position You know and and have a tough skin because you're gonna be you're gonna get booed. That's the nature of the position That's it if you're a quarterback a coordinator or a head coach You're you're hired to get fired so figure that you know that was the big thing. I just thought Once again, it's it's fix it and flush it But it's not too high not too low you know wasn't all your fault a fall in week one and everything wasn't great in week two because of you And as a quarterback you know that hopefully and you just keep moving forward So let's spend a little more time on the offense Obviously one of the big things is the run game They just have not been able to get it going in these first two games now this week offers them a chance Carolina has been awful against the run So yeah, like like worst in the league against the run so

What can they do to kind of get this run game going what what's kind of keeping it from getting started and how do they get it started? Well, I have to do things a certain way because I can't really get a picture unless I kind of back things up So I took every run from the first two games that gained less than three yards I put it all on one tape and when you put it all on one tape You stand it kind of get a feel and I have three reasons. I think the run game is struggling one is They're not getting a lot of vertical displacement backwards and usually that comes with you're just a little unsure of the guy next to you You don't quite have that trust with the guy next to you doesn't have to do it's just the idea of five new So I think that one that one will get fixed last because those guys have to get continued to get work together Now the other two that I think could get fixed immediately one is backside cutoff So a bunch of times when the browser running outside zone to left power pinnacle guys are making the play from the backside Howard did it once Barbara did it once Zion Johnson that has done it a couple times where you have only way that you can lose When the play is going right in your Zion Johnson if you don't step with the right foot and if you watch and we call it up and down step

So instead of gaining ground inside so eat so basically we used to tell a high school kid If the place if you're the right guard and the play is going to the left if you step with your left foot and run You're fine because if the guy doesn't get beat you across your face and has to go behind you We win because we're going wide the other way and that's but if you be sitting across You know across your face and front of you he's going to make the play especially that I fell so just some bad technique fundamentals So those guys will clean up So that was that was the second thing and then third you know The third thing that it's it's kind of hard to explain But they're just not really getting to the second level as much as you'd like them to get to the second level off those double teams They're not we know that comes with the vertical displacement that comes with the idea of who has who and that takes me like Really that leads me to my the true last point here is that they don't really they're having trouble Identifying who they have when things move around them So when they run all the motion and they run stuff

They who's the number one my back or who's the number two linebacker So you're getting four of five linemen doing it right and one guy's doing it wrong because maybe a miscount or He's unsure where he's going on the second level or a guy beat some across his face I have three plays that could have been really big hits that were one yard because one guy in the offensive like just It didn't do a terrible job, but just didn't do enough and that's all it takes on the offensive line He's one guy messing it up So not really knowing who you have on a second level because of all the movement they do now and then four or five or three or five doing it right That will get short up to because they're just learning each other So there's a lot of there's a lot of room for growth because I saw the room I saw a grow from the Chicago week in practice to the joint practice with the bills I guess the good run defense and they did some good things. It's just gonna take some time Yeah, it'll be interesting this week because like we mentioned teams have been running the ball pretty easily against the Panthers and even Even the Falcons on Sunday when they had no quarterback They were able to get beach on knob. He said that's beach on Robinson Maybe you know one of the best two running backs in football

But he was able to get some yards and able to get the you know get things moving against that defense So this is gonna be a very if they can't run the ball against Carolina then I'm gonna be concerned Well, it would be here's a here's the thing about this offense. It makes it so great though These these coaches are not dumb and they went back and they're like we gave we're giving up two hundred and twenty five yards of the game and off You know like people are knocking us off the football right now Well, then you got to allocate more resources. That's the only thing you could do So my thing is not if they stop it my thing is if they stop it with six So if they stop it with seven or eight well, you can't block seven or eight That's why you went out and got these receivers and you have a big time tight end You don't run your head into the wall and you don't go like so the argument will be you know They got to run the ball if they get a true six-man box. Yes, they have to move these guys off the ball But if the Panthers side you know what we're not very good these guys were the two they're rookies and the quarterbacks still Improving I wouldn't be I wouldn't be shocked if that's the game plan because even though the rookies have been good and the Shawn Watson played

Pretty well last week. They're still rookies and Watson has struggled until last week and we can't stop the run So you know what we're gonna put eight in the box and play man coverage every single play We're not we're not going death by a thousand cuts if you beat us deep you beat us deep So if they allocate eight to the box then you have to that's why you went out and got these guys now You have to throw the football so we'll see what happens But you know the idea that they're gonna get pushed around you're only gonna you can't just keep doing the same thing over and over I mean there's times they're getting knocked off the ball like high school team So they're gonna have to allocate some resources down in there that should open up the past game in my opinion So speaking of allocating more resources. Let's go to the defensive side of the ball for the Browns They were able to finally generate some pressure It seems like a lot of that came from came from blitzing. I thought Quincy Williams was much better in this game than he was in week one Now I think a lot of that was he was playing downhill for a lot of the game And I think that's kind of when he's at his best is playing downhill So I think that helped him a little bit How much more did did you see them blitz how much more aggressive was Mike Gutenberg kind of getting after the quarterback

Other than just you know bringing four well, you know This is one of my favorite things about football as an offense quarter is it's the one thing they haven't done in the last eight or nine years Is they haven't had to blitz but more importantly they have not had to have the illusion of a blitz and people are like What does that mean? Well, first of all if you bring for their twisting stunts deep, you know tied to T.E. T.T. Stunts all those kinds of stunts inside if they're just bringing four But the illusion of pressure is just as important and what I mean by that is that if you show six You as an offensive line you have to account for it, right? It doesn't matter if they bring six you have to have the answer if they do and that's one thing that you saw a lot of where they did Bring five they did bring six but they had a illusion of pressure all the time So that's so important and once again, I'm gonna chalk it up to this is his first time as a defensive coordinator calling the place and You know in the first game people are like we had well, it's really hard as a coordinator on either side of the ball If your team is just getting the you know what kicked out of them and they defensively they were just getting handled that game

So I don't care what he called guys weren't playing very well and he wasn't calling it very well. It's just one of those games So I just thought the you're getting two defensive tackles that are playing at a pretty high level Mason Graham is really playing at a high level Milly Collins is getting back into it Carson Swaychenscher is getting he just had a little rascals in practice very much So they had to allocate pressure now what that does is if you're bringing pressure or even the illusion of pressure It makes you play more man because if you bring five or six you have to play man Anyway in in Roonburst guy says so kind of the idea that they couldn't get pressure and people wanted more man coverage To get more pressure kind of it made him play show his hand He had to play more man and once again. Let's hope he learned from it now. Once again I give I give him a lot of credit He had a poor first of showing he didn't say I'm doing it my way and he played more man and he tried some different things and it worked so good for him Now of course the flip side of that is if you do blitz it's gonna expose some things Um and the bucks the boxing Baker Mayfield weren't always able to I met I thought Baker was just awful on on Sunday

And certainly the Browns defense was there's credit for that, but I've he was airmailing throw he was a he was a mess This is not a Baker Mayfield podcast But if you do blitz it does expose some things on the back end You know, it's how do the Browns kind of cover that well here's the miles hard and played much better So here's the thing you got him in that for that safety has to help if they're gonna be in one eye hat to high At those safeties had to try to do their best to keep everything in problem But I will say this Dan if you don't have Josh Allen if you're not going to get Patrick my homes You just got to figure it out because any time you throw it every time you add five yards to a throw 10 yards 15 yards 20 yards So they gave up some for the vertical passes. They're like oh Baker didn't hit those most quarterbacks don't hit those Right, but there are some to hit them But you don't hit those all the time and you have to roll the dice and once again the illusion of pressure Doesn't mess up the quarterbacks footwork does he go to the right? So you're speeding up the clock and the more you speed up the clock the more you create Problems and the more you force Mistakes because the quarterbacks thinking are they bringing six?

Are they bringing forward to this side and three to or the three to this side? Are they bringing are they dropping the ends and bringing four you know like are they sim pressering and when you're thinking about that stuff Sometimes your footwork's not as good and sometimes you're thinking you may have to get rid of the ball quicker than you do But what a quarterbacks comfortable you saw it with the Sean Watson outcarried who it is when you're when you know You're going with the ball because you know the coverage You're pretty confident what you're doing and these guys are pros So that's what they have to do in my opinion to kind of alleviate that there's gonna give up some place If you're gonna play man you're gonna give up some plays but constantly giving a different picture pressure or the illusion of pressure is a key for this defense in my opinion Yeah, it'll be it'll be kind of interesting to see it and and that back end Obviously played a lot better part of it, you know miles harden played really well I thought you know Denzel Ward is off to a great start But the touchdown he just ran into Tyson Campbell that was a strange way what when you watch that play When basically they set up they basically made Tyson Campbell pick Denzel Ward How do you?

It was it was the touchdown. How do you sort of combat that as a defense back what happened on that play? Who was wrong? Well, you know, it's not really wrong So anytime you're getting picked a rub route you got to give depth So that's why they always talk about as coordinators if you're getting pressed off the line of scrimmage Bunches stacks and movement because what bunches and stacks and movement do is they if you don't if you don't if you do with the browns Do where they try to get up in your face and try not especially Denzel Ward Denzel Ward tries not to give up too much ground because he jumps in your back pocket He's one of the he's like Deon Sanders He's one of the best to ever do it since Deon Sanders where he doesn't always have to get his hands on you He doesn't always have to Like jam you Where other quarterback quarterbacks to he could just kind of jump in your back pocket and go where you admire you But what has up happened if you don't get a lot of depth or you're jamming is that you get caught in the wash and we used to say Let's try to get him caught in traffic So what you have to do if you're getting picked or rubbed and your man coverage You got to give depth and you got to say if they're gonna run manbeaters They got to be underneath man manbeaters and they got it. We got a rally in tackle

That's what makes you know, that's why disguising man sometimes is so important Especially if you have teams that reduce formations and stack and bunch and rub routes and switch releases because it's just hard Because you get caught up in the wash. So for me. It's just the idea of give yourself give a little bit of depth Let the traffic hat we'll say let the traffic happen front of you and then you know get your car and find it I guess that's the best answer I can give you What what did we miss? We got you excited about Sundays one that we didn't comp comp a memory football is getting me very excited You know the stuff that you know, I know it's not the most exciting stuff But the idea of getting some first downs before you put fielding punts. So you're not you know fielding punts You know, you know my wife will go what why why was that a good play he caught the punt because if he doesn't catch That's a 25 it bounces and goes to the 11 and that's 14 yards of hidden yard is that that's you know scoring from the 25 To you know or the 11 that you know that gets me excited when you feel the punt when you punt it and you you know and it's a Caught in corner. Obviously. I'm dating myself there

But you do it right and stout inside the tent hard to go 90 yards against any defense especially it gives us solid defense You know making sure you put well cover well and Protect the football and third down conversions with your feet and just the idea of like playing a real football game They know they they haven't been very successful last couple years. That was just a really good football game played by all the all the facets and The teammates and Carson Swaychinger and all those kind of things and I think those things are so like the second down in 12 The out route to Boston that gets me excited people are like it's just an out route But yeah, it's something they haven't had where you can just you know, that's a gift That's an NFL on the hash. She or not Rob Nouts third down a two you scored touchdown because of the second down play I just like all that little stuff that the hidden yardage the complimentary football the Being selfless the idea of you know throwing the bubble screen you know you and I have talked for five years half a decade About the brows need guys who get easy yards they threw a bubble screen no one blocked anybody because it was a run play No one blocked past no one blocked anybody in KC got nine yards. That's huge for this offense

They have a guy they have a guy who could do things that is oh, so that's what excites me just the idea of you know kind of You know everybody get kind of buying in right everybody kind of doing their part having us having a role Starring in their role Nathaniel Watson making big plays on special teams and celebrating Malachi Corley not pounding It's in being a productive on special teams. You know everybody having a role and being really good at it. That's what I liked But before we get to the question, I do want to bring up one other thing because I did see you tweet about this And you and I disagree on these two things first of all Well, this is the first thing. This is not one of the two things. I was gonna bring up. I was gonna say it's not the first It's not the first time we know no no no A few coaching decisions Yeah, so first of all I'm generally speaking. This is not one of the two things I was gonna bring up I'll just put it out there generally speaking. I'm not taking the ball guy. I like to defer I like to defer Try and double dip. I whatever that that's neither here nor there. We've are we were arguing about that in the media room even so

anyway The the challenge which and and I ignored like I understand third and five is different from third night, right like I like I understand that but I That felt like a first time head coach kind of Challenging something that made sense to challenge But also you can't challenge over three yards unless it's like the difference between a first down or like a third and fourth third and one something like that I Personally don't like challenging over small plays like that and then the fourth down to me if we're talking complimentary football When they went forward on that fourth down you knew you were in a defensive battle You you knew you weren't gonna run that tight end that tight end direct snap play because it failed because you couldn't get it earlier You got the fall start So you that was that was out of out of the mix to Sean Watson is not gonna quarterback sneak the ball I mean in that spot that's a court if if it would have been a quarterback sneak That's I actually would have been better with it. I didn't like the decision and I didn't like the play call because

You gave up a field goal because of it in a defensive game and You tried to run the ball on a day when you weren't able to run the ball. So Those are my issues with those coaching decisions I did I did see you tweeting about it. I know you disagree with me So I said my piece you can say you're a piece about it Well, you know what's again, here's the thing both could be right and here I'm gonna start start by saying that because everything you said is exactly right but a couple things that I like right so first and foremost I'm not I don't like the analytics of football But I do like the analytics in terms of percentage wise sometimes right so like we talked about like a Baker missed a couple throws down the field well some of those misses were sailing 50 yards not field Those are hard completion so playing the percentage that defense right but there's another one right what's the percentage Uh, and I don't know it offhand, but I know it's a pretty you'd be a substantial number What's it what's the percentage of picking up third and five to third Nate and if it's substantially you as a coach and what you do is An analytic program then great so that was the one thing I wasn't huge on that call, but I also like if it's not done right fix it

Right, so I don't care if it's just through yards that would be my argument as a coach if it wasn't right fix it And it doesn't matter if it's a half yard to me I understand what you're saying, but that would be the philosophy now the fourth down call But I do I do want to say like I understand what you're saying, but my argument will be you only get two of these challenges, right? Yeah, and so like you're like you're right. Obviously you'd love to be able to just challenge everything and get a yard two yards And yeah, there's a million plays you could probably challenge and get back But you you do have to be you have to do you do have to be you have to pick and choose your spots because you only get two of them Well, and I would say you know, I would just say I you're telling your defensive guy You're showing that like I'm gonna do everything for you because it's kind of two different coaches There's a lot of things we you know, once again, though I I really don't have a rebuttal on that one is the idea of I like the idea that you make Football you make sure it's right, but what you're saying makes absolutely sense to it So I don't really have a rebuttal on beside saying I like the call. I like the idea of I'm not letting you I'm I am So dialed into this game that I don't care for sister yards I guess it's kind of what I'm gonna try to say now the fourth down call I absolutely loved it

I don't care where it was on the field because here's why the numbers tell you not to do it the complimentary football tells you not to do it everything tells you not to do it You're not running the ball, but you tell your offensive line you tell your football. We've seen it all camp We got to be able to get a yard if we need a yard to win a game and they didn't do it and I understand that and then they were able to rally hold to a field goal So there's a lot of coaching things that can happen there There's a lot of truss sets built there between your staff your offensive staff your defensive staff your offensive lineman You know, I broke down the play they yet they brought they they allocated resources they ran power There's some things they'll fix there, but I actually love the call because it was a field call and so many times and Football we do things because we're told to or it's supposed to and sometimes you just have a feel and you're like You know what our guys can get it and that shows such confidence and even though they didn't get it And I don't think you know and at what everybody said I'm with you I don't disagree with you people have called me stupid for last two days And you're right and I've been called stupid when I have what when I went for it I absolutely love the call I stand by it. I think it's awesome shows such like you're you're changing the two

Right, this is not a where we put they were down 16 to six. That's when they fold they didn't fold They went they went down a score. So just try to Constantly build like the browns browns is gonna brown bleep this right like all those things They mean something in that locker room. So I just think it get even though If you ask a hundred people and they and I would tell my wife to agree with you I would tell my daughter to agree with you because that's the correct thing to do and in the key to the game is a head coach You're called play sometimes you just do dumb stuff because you believe in your team and if they get it It's the same conversation where have I'm going where you go? Got a glavenous team. They got a first down in some people say what I like to call anyway But and I understand all that and there's logistics around for me It was just a feel thing and I like the way that they're using numbers to help They're not using numbers to direct how they how they think and I think that's important for me That's all fair Um and like I said it to me I like it wasn't a result space thing I didn't love the decision initially and I didn't like the idea of I didn't like the call

Nest I didn't like the way they tried to convert it either Well, you know, it's those those are the two things. I mean and in that situation like man That would have been a great time to have like a tailing green active right? Yeah, put him out there to sneak or Like he obviously didn't want to do the fan and sneak and they had issues with the fan and sneak last year too and him getting the football So they got to figure that out Beyond just say we're gonna turn and hand the ball loss Well, you know what and that's why the some of these things even though he's a head coach and the bottom line comes to you That's why like you and I have talked about me being a coach or you being a GM This is kind of be the same thing as me being a coach and having a guy who whose my light is it my defensive coordinator Is in my linebacker coach the reality guy the non-emotional guy the guy who that's why I like being in the box as a as a coordinator Because if he's in the box as a calling plays Sometimes you just go by the book right you just go. Yeah, we're let's part where you know But when you're down feeling emotion So that would be my next when you talk about a rookie that would be the only rookie head coach thing that I would say is you know Does he go in the meetings this week and say all right?

Tarver you're in charge now your level headed all the time If we get in that situation again just get my ear and say hey remember Punt the ball here. We've been playing good defense now as a head coach. I might go I don't care. We're running the ball. We're getting it first out of it. Can't get it first out We don't deserve to win But you have a guy who kind of spiced you because sometimes you go okay, put the ball right whatever it is So yeah, there's some learning curve there right now that for sure I'll tell you what if I'm looking for somebody level headed. I'm not looking on the defensive side of the ball No, no, you gotta go you guys you gotta go with like you gotta go with definitely not looking at Jason Tarver No, no, I agree But you know sometimes those guys those guys will be like we're playing such good defense They'll they'll talk you into stuff right though like my defensive coordinator was always like as Um, I would lose my mind. I was a head coach and I was the play collar and my defense a coordinator Just like they do he wasn't he was the head coach of the defense all he had to do early in the week is tell me what he's doing And why he's doing it and I let him have free run and he would but one of the things I would tell him is Make sure you're telling me in the moments where I want to go for it. You tell me why we shouldn't and I might still run it

But I will listen to the argument and that's what so maybe it's just that like Give me an argument why and sometimes you go okay Sometimes you just go. I don't care and you're running it. That's why you get that That's why it all rolls out on you because you make the call All right, let's do a question of the week Hi, so everybody's been on this Mount Rushmore. We have never done a Mount Rushmore. We do drafts We do questions. So we're gonna do our Mount Rushmore today. I'm gonna let you go first So our my are rebuilding it's are rebuilding this together like are the two of us like putting the like No, you're using the Mount World doing our own you got your own Mount Rushmore We'll go back and forth. We'll put we'll put the each of ours on a Mount Rushmore one one thing at a time and Or I got I got a bunch. I'm sure you do too because but the the Mount Rushmore is Dad sings dad sings You know to your kids dad saying in general whatever it is Things that dad say all the time. What is your Mount Rushmore of things that you said or dad say all the time Okay, so um I a lot of mine were very kid-focused

Things I've said to my kids or I've said to me. This is a big one. This is a big one for me um You survived didn't you? Oh, it's a great one. See you good thing about us too Even though I'm older you're still almost in the generation where like there was some like you survived like you're bleating openly bleeding and your your parents are like you survived you're good or whatever oh To work till two o'clock in the morning. Well you survived didn't you you survived? You know, yeah, you survived you survived I'm gonna give you this one as a kid. I had stitches in my head hundreds of stitches in my head I honestly I broke I broke I can tell I broke tons of bones risk that you need you name it sir, so The the thing that I would openly be bleeding or disformed and my dad would simply go you're fine just Just the 19 late 1970s into the 80s you're fine almost like rubbed her on it But just like you're fine like no, I'm not fine like I'm bleeding profusely from my like from my face. I'm not you're fine

I'm not fine. So I'm just gonna go that was like personal But that was like you're fine. That's my first one for sure. Yeah. All right So here here's here's one and I'm gonna use a specific example here just to give you the just of what I Mean but like let's say um let's say the lawn need we needed mode right you say something like You know the lawn's not gonna mo itself That's like great something something's not gonna do itself is a great one full clothes aren't gonna fold themselves That's good. Yeah, exactly. Yeah, get your start gonna wash themselves. There's there's a great one All right, I got one um, I'm sure you have had this sometimes this happens obviously I just have one child that's a thought And I'm gonna go with don't make me tell your mother Oh, yeah, don't make me tell your mother because obviously dad daughter we have that relationship But you know they have that we we're we're we're a group But there's some things you do do not make me tell your mother You know it is yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, I'll just leave it there. Yeah, just leave it let it go

Okay, this is one that I'm always bugging my kids about Um, and again, this is sort of uh you can finish this however Hey, did you turn off the blank? Did you turn off the bathroom light? Did you turn uh, did you turn off the oven? Did you turn whatever did you turn off the I came downstairs the other day and the TV down in the basement was on it Prime been on like I left for my trip on Saturday and prime been on since like Saturday night somebody didn't turn off the TV So kid comes up from the basement. Hey, you're not the TV kid comes out of the bathroom. You're not the bathroom light All of it so so I'm gonna piggyback on the one because I think it's great and there's like more versions of that that were in my house and The I just always remember my my dad saying Why is every light in the house on? Like that's good. It could wake up and so it's the same kind of thing But like it was why is every light in the house on like he wake up in the morning I woke up this morning went downstairs every light in the house is on Know I got home from work every height every light in the house is on no one's home

So it's the same kind of thing like you every why every light in the house is on for sure All right, I guess this is my last one. This is another one that I say a lot Uh, it applies a lot to homework, but also applies to like cleaning rooms and all this stuff Just do it now Oh god, that's a great one. Thank you. I wait just just why you shoot with you. Yeah, yeah You're sitting here watching TV or you're playing a video just All monically my room today, but you're not cl- look so just do it Yeah, just go do it like the procrast like the procrastination and like we I tell my dad all the time Like why do you make it so hard in the morning? Like with your school bag, except like just get home do it now like do like plug your Chromebook like do it now It'll be you tomorrow morning will be so much easier charge charge your phone tonight Um So my last one it once again you can kind of um Take it in different rooms um Because I said so

So my dad was and I realized what I became a father is that when my dad didn't have an answer that like Like really like he thought it through or like like Like I don't want why do we have to have this for dinner instead of being like maybe because maybe he didn't want it either Because my mom was making whoever it was just because I said so and uh Why do I have to because I said so I don't want to go there because I'm going to I because I said so so that one Always sticks with me too because I said so absolutely a core memory for me. That's a good one All right, let's hear these honorable mentions you got it So I got uh Once again, uh mine would go back to our light ones just turn the light off. Yeah, just turn the light off. I have um You get you can't do that yet. You got to wait to your older wait to your older one. We got me To good one and and then the other one was um, I brought you into this world I had the whole one my that was one that was I remember that one because I brought you into this world

And I'll take you out like when I'd argue with my dad like I brought you in here. I'll take you out kind of thing So yeah, and that was back with like you know, it's funny, but like like the They our parents said and did things that were just way different than what we do it for sure like just it's a different Without question. It's a different time You got you got it you got a couple well. I got what like what about the uh, you know Don't make me take that away You know, and that's one see that one's tough because you say that and you think just the threats gonna work But at some point they try to call your bluff And then you actually got to take it away and you feel kind of bad because they're like sad and they didn't really want you to take Whatever it was away and like now they whatever and you but you got to hold your ground You get yourself into that corner, but that's don't don't make me take that away Yeah, that reminds me another one. I don't even have one um, I gave you the chance to do the right thing Gave you the idea to uh, it's the same kind of thing right? Yeah, I gave you the chance to do the right thing

You had you had or or you had multiple opportunities to do the right thing like I did I can do it But you're right. I did have multiple I didn't do it. Yeah. Yeah, that's a good one All right, for sure if you uh, did you have any good road trip ones like did you ever threaten to turn the car around or anything? Oh, yeah, well I had um, you know when I remember like the Like I would do like occasionally especially like when I was a little bit older with my dad because we were so competitive in the football thing But I remember like I'd be like I'm leaving and I'd walk out and you know Like now a day's friends to be like where are you going and I can do it in my dad be like don't come back Like I'd be like I'm leaving it be like good. I'm walking the door. I don't come back It's like so if you're leaving big boy make sure tell me where you're going right? So I would yeah, that was uh, I remember like the road trips was just like lead your sister alone Um, because I was just like I would just poke in my sister and I knew what got her going especially No back when you were like in station wagon. Oh, yeah You're just laying in the back you make forks of stuff like there was no seat belts. There was no safety

Yeah, it was just you know, I people say how old do you I remember My parents having a station wagon that had an asteray that we pulled down I remember that to this day or the death or the death lighter that you pushed in and it came out as a full-fledged weapon Uh Yeah, well, I know like my grandma was a smoker so it was like we I know all the smoking Yes, right. I'm very I'm very aware of all the things in cars and Asterays in the house and all that stuff. Uh, so speaking of cars will go after this, but like My mom was a florist before I was born she had this van okay, and so When so I had two older sisters now I was born so there were three of us so This van was empty in the back My dad just took this bench and like screwed it into the ground Like bolted it into the ground just along the side of the wall super super safe Like I think there were seat belts on it. I don't know and we never sat in the bench anyway So we're on these road trips and we're just laying on the floor of this van

Like that's amazing like while we're driving down the road it was I Yeah, it was it was not you remember I got to tell you this did you remember those the trailers the like the campers that came that like when you Like you know, yeah, that's what we were that's what we were towing it with this van And it went all the way down and you weren't allowed to be in it. I remember my friend We would go to mohiken and our parents were okay with us When it was down we would be in it Like like on the drive like it was down like we were in a tunnel in there with like flashlights for hours like Like what what were we doing then why was that okay like what why was that okay with my parents at that time But I remember specifically doing that We we we need to do like a we should probably just be dead draft. Oh, gosh I mean we and it has it has to be it has to be old baseball It has to be 35 rounds because there's no doubt. I should be absolutely not around at this point All right, well that will do it for this and we're glad you're here lance because we get to have yon every Tuesday and Thursday
