Calgary Flames' Penalty Kill: A Season of Success

0:00It's April 20th. This is Calgary Flames News today, powered by AI, your team, your update. The Calgary Flames struggled on the power play last season, but their penalty kill came through big time in 2025, 26. They shut down 80.4% of opponent power plays, landing 12th in the league, and even lead the way in short-handed goals. It was a bright spot amid all the changes in growing pains on the roster. Even coach Trent Cole took over the penalty kill midway through the prior year and tweaked the system for this season. After some early hiccups, it clicked, thanks to vets like Mikel Backland and Blake Coleman holding the fort, plus steady hands on defense from guys. Like Kevin Ball, Rasmus Anderson, and Mackenzie Weigar. Players raved about the setup, with Coleman shouting out Cole's prep work and the comfort level among the group. It built momentum, eating up minutes and flipping games. Good goal tending sealed the deal, making it a reliable strength all year.

1:00Key moves helped too, like recalling Jan Kuznetsoff from the Wranglers in early November. His size, speed, and smarts shut down plays quick, pairing perfect with Weigar. Forward's Joel Farahby and Sam Hanzek jumped in, with Farahby netting four short-handed tallies, tying Coleman for the team lead. That penalty kill foundation gives the flames real momentum heading into next year, proving they can grind through adversity and steal edges where it counts.
