About this episode

“A snarle in the woods, ancient for spirits nip at his heels. He can outrun a force of nature on foot. He needs an instant power machine built for the wild. The Toyota BZ Woodland off-road handling, all electric power, leave evil in the dust.”From the transcript

Robin Dreeke spent decades in the FBI watching people crack in rooms like this. He says the confession is not the moment — the cracks are. A number that changes. An answer nobody asked for. A fact that closes the circle.

In Part 3 of the interrogation breakdown, Tony and Robin play three clips from the moments Caleb Flynn's story fell apart. The unprompted accusation — it feels like you guys are pointing it to me — when the detective was talking about paperwork. The timeline that went from two to five minutes down to five seconds when Morgan played it back. And the missing gun — Caleb's own handgun in his own truck, console open, gun gone, never recovered, known only to his children and his wife.

Robin reads each moment in real time: what the detective was watching for, what the behavioral shift means, and why these three cracks told Morgan everything the story itself had been hiding.

Caleb Flynn has pleaded not guilty to all charges including aggravated murder. He is presumed innocent.

A snarle in the woods, ancient for spirits nip at his heels. He can outrun a force of nature on foot. He needs an instant power machine built for the wild. The only escape is in. The Toyota BZ Woodland off-road handling, all electric power, leave evil in the dust. John Chau, stars in. Camping. Face to wild, test drive Toyota's new all-electric family atro local dealer. Toyota, let's go places. This is Hidden Tillers Live with Tony Brusky and Robin Dree. Let's continue talking. Most people watching interrogation footage, you're looking for the confession. Almost never happens. In the room, what does happen are the cracks. A number that changes a sentence that comes out of nowhere and answer that doesn't match the actual question. Caleb never confessed. But he did crack quite a bit in the questioning.

Let's take a look at more of that interrogation that went on just the other day, but right after the crime took place, the detective is talking about next step. Search warrant, evidence processing. Hasn't accused Caleb of anything. Well, Caleb's feeling a little looked at right now. The fingers, he feels. He's pointing. This is not me saying, hey, anything out of the ordinary, I'm just saying, what I want to do is say Caleb came in and we thought I'd assume an update on what I had learned about the scene. The next other thing is that they're still working on. I don't want you to give the impression that this is all done and then we'll go live. The scene is like pointing to me. Well, it's just like you guys are pointing to me. Well, I mean, that's not what I'm trying to do here. It feels like, well, I'm not trying to come across as it's you.

I mean, but what I want to say is, is that I can't. I can't do these search warrant in that stuff and not look at everything. It's a short video I mean. So, one point to that is as I'm looking at the search warrant and I was gathering all this information. I don't want to, hey, we've never had an article where we're super successful. And then it comes out like, yeah, other than the normal couple that has, you know, things going on in the first few hits that we are in normal, mere couples, we want each other in this degree. Yeah, I've never laid an informer. I've never screamed afterwards. I mean, even though what neighbors said, you know. Volunteering a lot of little nuggets of information. I've never screamed at her. I've never laid a hand on her.

I don't know what the neighbors are talking about. Never accused once of being a murderer either, but he's all up in paranoid that they're looking at him. Now, naturally, I think one might be a little paranoid if you're in that sort of situation and you didn't do it. I know I would be. But what he was volunteering there, did any of that read as out of the ordinary to you from someone who didn't commit a crime as to someone who's really hoping they don't figure out what it was. You're really hoping they don't figure out that you're the one who committed the crime. Yeah. Okay. I mean, so the first thing you're going to do if you didn't commit the crime is you're going to help them solve the crime. It's like, all right, what do you need me to do? And you're just like, what do you need me to do? I mean, so that's the, you're focused on helping the law enforcement do their job. That's the first thing you're doing if you're innocent is like, what do you need from me? What can we do to make this move faster? What do you, we need to do to find this guy? So that should be his first and foremost thing. What do we need to do? So according to the other testimony, too, his daughters are paranoid.

The whole family is scared to death because they think there's a murderer out there that hasn't been caught. And they couldn't sleep that night. So the first thing as a father you'd be doing is what can we do to help find this guy? So my family can sleep safe. That should be the focus. But instead, he's doubling down on what I said before. He believes his relationship is his cover. And so he's talking about how we not never laid a hand on her. We have a good health and relationship. And so he's doubling down on that without even being asked. And so he thinks that's the cover he needs. But it's being eroded because he thinks because he's got that relationship, they're not going to investigate and do subpoenas and do and find this data. Because why would you have to? I got a good relationship. You shouldn't suspect me. And so when, I mean, there's a lot of things the detective could have done, even more. And I would just question his responses on things. Like when he came back and said, you know, and was insinuating that, you know, you're making it look like it's me or you think it's me, what makes you say that?

I would just say, so anytime they say something, you literally just take the words they say and you explore what made you say that. Caleb, that's the new thing to say. What made you say that? Then the verbal language, then the verbal diarrhea just starts coming out because they didn't have a plan for being stupid. They didn't have a plan for just regurgitating stuff that's inking, and they grew up with what we're talking about right here. And so that's when they have a real opportunity to sink themselves. And the other thing that they could have done too in this is say, listen, here's what we're going to do as partisan investigation as a detective said. Here's what I'm going to find. I'm going to find any relationship that you've had and your wife has had because we're going to find these relationships because it's going to lead us to the perpetrator. Is there something I'm going to find that you want me to know about ahead of time so that doesn't look bad for you right in advance? Because if I know something ahead of time, we can talk about it. We can mitigate these things beforehand and we can discuss a path forward because if that gets out of your hands and I find out and you didn't disclose it to me,

things are going to be a lot worse. You tell me which way you want to go. Is there any advantage to him in that moment in time, though, saying, yeah, I got to tell you I haven't had an affair for all these, however long it was, with the girl at the church. Is there any advantage or at all, I mean, to him telling the detective that up front of having an affair but I didn't kill my wife? I mean, it's not like they're going to end up in, because VN's up in trial, which he is here obviously, the detective is like, well, look, he did say he's having an affair to me right away, but he didn't kill his wife. I mean, it doesn't really change, but how would that play to an advantage for an innocent person, if you will? It's going to give the advantage of, remember, the behavior is a trust where you're going to hopefully inspire someone to trust you through your behavior's open-ass communication, transparency and vulnerability. And if you're going to have any lack of transparency, even when it's not in your best interest to be transparent, like saying you're just going to disclose the affair,

it gives the detective a halo effect potentially. In other words, it's not saying that they weren't going to find out all these other horrendous things, but it's one thing that the detective is going to say, wow, he's being truthful about this. And he's going to cause an detective to potentially second-guess themselves, well, he's being truthful here. Maybe he's going to be truthful here and here. In other words, if Caleb could lay down a series of self-incriminating statements that weren't murder statements, but self-incriminating is like, hey, I wasn't the best husband. Here's what was going on. And then, if he was actually smart of thinking about this, he might start throwing his girlfriend under the bus at this point. She made me do it. No, he probably wouldn't do that. But at this point, since it's going to be discovered anyway, it ain't hurting if he does do it. Yeah, I mean, it's just it's going to hurt his public image and his reputation and his family and the family and the money that's coming to him. All that gets shot out of the water pretty quick. But he seemed to be ready for that. According to the text messages to his side, please.

Here's a thing that people don't quite understand either. So just they're still holding out hope. They're holding out hope that he says he's going to get the the subpoena on this. They still are going to check my cell phone. I know I have all these things that are still in the cloud someplace. I know they probably aren't deleted. But maybe they'll mess it up. Maybe they won't find it. Maybe it'll get lost. Maybe, maybe, maybe, and they'll hold on to the glimmer of maybe even though it's it's remote. And so they'll double down on it and and pray and it never works. Well, I mean, I'm not giving him this sort of credibility here, but they didn't like immediately check him for gunpowder residue or anything like that. I wonder, I mean, I don't think Caleb's bright enough to recognize that in the moment. But if you're the criminal who watches a lot of date line and you're like, shit, didn't even check for that yet. I'd be like, these guys aren't on their game and getting a little more fuel behind those maybes because it's like, wow, they're not doing some obvious shit right now that is probably

do. Well, up until this, I think he thought it was going well. Yeah, I agree. Here's another piece from that interview. And and and it's the prime example of why you ask the same question more than once in a few different ways because sometimes you get different answers that are rather reviewing. You know, then you said you froze for a couple of minutes correct. I don't know how long I froze. You know, I didn't fix the problem. Man, it's what I heard it and I got up and we went out like it froze for. What I don't say. I know really you said you froze for two to five minutes is what you thought. No, you asked how long two to five minutes I before I told you that or the whole line on one of that. Well, I'm saying like you said you hurt the gun shot or it you were scared. It surprised me and I paced there. I don't know five seconds. What got down the right hook up and then you ran into the center of yes.

You should have heard that doctor in center name so times okay. And she didn't answer. Turn the light on. Saw it. And my phone that I went by Thomas in the living room. Okay. No, that's not hot when I did this even though I just said I did that like a few hours ago. I mean, is that ever explain. I mean, it's a moment of trauma of people can recall things, you know, differently. I don't know. Is that a red flag? Yeah, it's a huge red flag. Okay. It's not a normal response if you're not just the man of the house, anyone in the house where you actually have loved ones because you're going to move to a threat or just identify what the hell is going on. I mean, how many of us watching and listening have had a bump in the middle of the night and you cow run to the blankets. You do when you're four or five years old granted he's four or five in his behavior. But otherwise you you investigate what the hell was that and the other thing that was part of this that he hasn't described at all was noise.

So all you heard was two gunshots and even if so I think he threw in that I froze so you can say that's why I didn't see anyone. Why didn't you hear anyone? Why weren't the dogs but two gunshots go off and dogs aren't parking in the house and you have two dogs. You don't hear someone running out the door because remember this is someone just killed someone or someone shot something in the house. Do you think they're walking commonly out the door being quiet? No, they're booking us out the door. They're running out the way they came. They're going they're escaping. You're going to hear commotion. You're going to hear things but according to him the only thing heard was two gunshots. And then they went into his garage and broke open an unlocked door from the inside and moved a fridge to get away. Smart man. That was the escape. And you know what they did next they went to Nancy Guthrie's house. Yeah, it disappeared a night there too. Here's one thought I had on this this morning and look everything really points at Caleb Flynn and it's until proven guilty but it's almost so bad.

That you almost have like have to wonder did somebody else do this because this is such a shitty job of trying to stage this scene. That it's like could anybody be this stupid could anybody really do it this bad and I think the answers yes but yes because you know anyone else would have done what a left the trail of something and that's the thing here there would have been a trail of stupid. Kill in a human being is rough. It's not easy business if people don't do it even murder for hires. I mean look at all the data points were that they had in the Donna Adelson cases. You know I mean there's there's such a trail if you involve one other person in your in your crazy. There's a lot more leakage coming out the only other person that we saw involved and unwittingly according to what we're seeing is the side piece. This is all this is all just chaos in his own head that he created that's why everyone else was so floored by this and that's why all roads are leading back to him because there's no other explanation the stats support it's not even like a low probability there's no probability of of the things that happened there's zero probability zero that it's any other human being unless some divine intervention came down and and some some evil entity again I'm watching the game of Thrones again right you know some dark force came up.

Dark force came out shot a gun in vaporize in the wind. Well he was praying over the girls while they were sleeping so we didn't see what he was praying for but God maybe he had some sort of you know that's that's the next thing you know den J. P. Miller is possessed too you know all the things that people will claim. Your thoughts in the comments section on sub stack and YouTube if you want to weigh in give us your thoughts what do you think happen I've yet to see anybody be on the on team Caleb here if you are I'd love to hear why and I'd love to hear what you believe or why you believe the evidence does not point at him if that exists I again I've yet to hear or see a Caleb supporter in anything about this case well I know everyone we're going to a lot of people comment in on alia you know the side piece in here her couple of people. Yeah that there's a lot of questions there and Bob Mata has been covered as well and I do too but I'll all we know is now there's no charges there and Jennifer Coffin if we cover this well the other day unless they can show an action taken of how she aided in a bedded with with actual actions not necessarily just knowledge but actual actions it's going to be a hard prosecution.

Yeah I don't think they're honest to God I don't think you're ever going to charge there and I don't think it'd be called for I think she was taken advantage of I think she was willingly stupid on a lot of things young and dumb and I don't know that she knew what exactly he was about to do all the signs were there without a doubt. But at the same thing she should have done a thousand things she should have called and said she didn't but that's but not reporting that your boyfriend is talking homicidally about your his wife is also not a evidence of you participating in the crime nor would that do anything if you call. Yeah he keeps talking about this has he done anything does he actually have a plan no they're not going to rest him there's no law against talking about because there's nothing illegal about being immoral or unethical. No and so because here's the final thought experiment with that and which is tough and it's tough and that is if not for her do you think you would have killed his wife.

I think there would have been if not for her there would have been another her maybe and that's and that's and that's why that's why there's been quite honestly another interesting question over the years yeah but we'll find out in the next messages wouldn't we yeah yeah I think that's not the right thing. I can't wait to actually get the transcript of those so we can do a dramatic reading I think that'll be a fun a fun exercise. All right your thoughts in the comments section on substack and YouTube we'd love for you to weigh in and give us your thoughts and feedback.
