Today on the pod we sat down with 4 buskers from the famed Santa Monica Pier to listen to their musical stylings of both classic hits and original songs, hear their dreams for the future, and see them participate in a rare jam. That's Matt Rogers and Bowen Yang. We've been talking about Cupid Mayo for a minute now. And wow. So many of you already love this stuff. And if you're thinking, wait, what is Cupid? Do you not have the internet? It's the OG Japanese mayonnaise. The one with the red cap. What makes it different? Egg yolks. Cupid is made with egg yolks only giving it this rich umami flavor that elevates everything.
Chefs use it. Restaurants use it. Where chefs work, of course. Food and flavor lovers use it. You haven't tried it yet? We'll find the red cap and see what everyone's talking about. White Ontr. Cupid. The original Japanese mayonnaise. Cupid. Welcome back to Artisan Artisan Artisan Artisan Artisan. This week's round table is full of buskers. Busking is the art of singing outside in a popular public setting. It is spontaneous. It is a mixture of professional and non-professional singers. All that we know for sure is they are adding sound into the atmosphere. People can busk in many different ways. But we have decided to sit down with some people that busk in a very interesting way. Maybe we'll see. So pull out your old-ass guitar, throw your hat down, hit a penny into the guitar case, and listen in.
Thank you. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you so much. Thank you so much. Thank you. Thank you so much. Thank you. Oh, wow. What are you playing? What are you? What are you guys going to play? What are you on G? G. I'm done. Let's go. Let's go. I'll be on G. One, two, one, two, three. Go. Wow. Wow. I'm glad I thought it was. We're actually how to shit. Unbelievable. Welcome. It's so good to be indoors. It's all about the music, man. It's all about the music.
It's all about the music. It's all about the music, man. It's all about the music, man. I don't know if this is going up on YouTube or something, but put a hat down in the link in the description below. If you want to put some dollars in there. Yeah, come on. I'm not about the money. I'm not about the money. I'm not about this capitalist society, man. I'm not here to make music for money, man. I'm here to make music to live. But if you do feel so inclined, please throw a penny here. Feel free. Feel free. I thought about selling out. I'm sure we've all had the thought. Maybe all makes music like Duolipa, Britney Spears, Coldplay. But no. No. We're out in the streets on the Santa Monica Pier making music for people as they're going in the ocean.
Is it for people as they're going in the ocean? As they're going in the ocean. Well, why don't we introduce ourselves? There are a name, a little bit about our song and... Yeah. What are all things? Well, why don't we introduce maybe the whole collective? I mean, we are collectible buskers. Some people will lightly call it a cult. We call it a little bit of a cult. We just call ourselves the bus boys. We're the gestures of ocean avenue. The bus boys. And the plates on the ocean every now. Love that song. That is a good one. It made me think of a song. I love that you're always thinking of songs. But yeah, we are collective. We each drive our different RVs. That's right. Up the coast down the coast. Down the coast. The bus boys. We love what we do. We want... I wouldn't call this a band because we all do our own acts at different kind of corners. But we do travel together. So it's this kind of beautiful, immersive community of artists where I get to learn about art in such an ethereal, majestic way.
We're all a part of the same record label. And I'd say the label is God. The label's God. Or the divine. The divine, I would say. It is. We are half a Christian God. A Christian. A Christian of magnetic, I would say. Eventually, I think Pauli Emreous, artist. Eventually, once everybody gets okay with it. Eventually, he's not just saying that. I think he will eventually. Everybody here is okay with it. But Destiny is a little learn into it. Just because you're all Pauli Emreous doesn't mean you're all hookin' up. That's what I'll say. That's so true. That's so true. Guys, my name is Rosie, Ethereum, Montmontra. And I... I play the snare drum on Santa Monica Boulevard. Cut to the wide, would ya? And that's a bass drum. I play the bass drum on Santa Monica Boulevard. That's the way you're correcting me. Cut to the wide. Can you even see the drum in the wide? Can you see the drum in the wide? Well, then there, Aston answered.
I want to know if you can see the drum in the wide. That's good. I know, I know. Can you see the drum in the wide? Hey, listen, listen, listen, listen. We're not doin' this for money. We don't have a hat down, so let's just give up the modernization rights now, huh? Give it up. Give it up. I know we don't want you to do this a lot, but I am wondering, should we just give that up right now? Absolutely. Let's give it up mentally and hope that no one catches on. Absolutely. We want to toggle the thing to the left. In my head, I don't think we'll be close enough for any sort of system to pick up what we're singing today. We're fine now, won't we? Oh, no, no. I'm in your room. You're in your room. Yes, in your room. No, you're in the room. I'll be right down. I'll be right down. Down, down. When it's right. And it's right. Right. And it's right. Right. We're right. We kiss, we make up. Is there anybody out there in a relationship that's going through it? Let us know. Oh, you too. That's awesome. Congratulations.
This part is for you. Buh, corridor stop. Unbelievable work. How valuable. It's just song to song to song to song. You know, you say something, the song sparks you, you take it away. That's kind of the improvisational nature of busking. Sometimes a man walks by and his outfit inspires a song. I saw a man the other day, he was, you know, he was wearing his dog tags from the military. And it made me think of a little song, a little song of a little something that goes like this. Come on. Seven Nation R. Hey. Buh, buh, buh, buh, buh, buh. The fight. I'm the fight of love. Out, out, out.
Seven Nation R. And come home and look back. Why don't you tell me grade you're in? Because that's amazing. I'm in the 14th grade. That's right. Past it. I'm in the 14th grade of life. I'm in the 14th grade of life. I mean, that's a beauty of things like that. You can see dog tags and all of a sudden, you're remembering the most famous song, maybe in the history of the world right now. Yeah, absolutely. You can't remember it. You can't remember it. It's famous song, stadium across the world. That's the blue you can remember. It's that blue. When does that stuff come from the most popular songs in those guys? Yeah, well, I should introduce myself. My name is Lapis Lazuli. Lapis. Lapis. Lazuli. I am a busker. I've done busking now for about 10 to 15 years. I won't tell you which one. Life is better. Are you counting not consecutive years? I won't tell you. Life is a journey and we laugh as an ocean. We're on all our different sailboats just a little long.
I'm so lucky and happy to have connected my sailboat via rope and ladder to a couple of other buskers that think alike. All you need is a rope and a ladder. Oh, Lapis. Oh, Lapis. You're more in us down, baby. You're so grounded in Earthy. We love you, man. Thank you, brother. Thank you so much. So yeah, my main instrument is this thing, I would say. The pipes. The neck. Look at tar here and there. The neck of the guitar and the neck of my friend. You know what's funny, man? You double neck. I don't want to tell on you, but it's funny, because I can, it's so obvious. You're really, really trying to get on the voice or American Idol because sometimes you say, man, this will be great. This will be a great story for American Idol. I don't know if that's completely true, but I mean. If you say, and this will be, we should get some footage for my package. I don't know. I don't know. That's true. You're always looking for a good spot with good lighting because you say it would be a good hometown package. Well, I don't know. You're shooting horizontal. So we know it's not going on TikTok. No, no, I don't know about that.
You always say, can we sing this song? Do you think the rights for, do you think ABC would be able to get the rights for this? I don't know. I don't know about that. But I do always try to aim for, you know, even though we're busking, I am trying to constantly be discovered. Because what else is there to busking? Busking. Hey. Busking. Busking makes me feel good. Oh, I was doing a different one. We all landed on busking makes me feel good. I'm not going to fit in. No, you are a human. You fit in all the time. You fit in introducing yourself. Tell me your name. I'm Lazarus. I am so excited to be here. I usually busk in the countryside. That's why I say I don't fit in sometimes, because I'm not really fast enough for city fun. I'm a little slow. I busk usually in the mountainside. It's not the best area too. I mean, how many people you see in the mountainside? Monotarily, financially. Does the amount of cars driving down a road or people walking on a street? I mean, I don't see many of people. And busking for cars is hard.
You got to be good fast. And I got it. Especially on those winding highway roads. Holy cow, your window rolled out. It rolled out. And amps are hard to busk. Especially in mountains. No electricity plug-ins there. But ever since I met these cats, lapis, and all my buds, we've been doing covers together. We've been doing duets together. I love all of you. Some originals, if you sneak it in. And some of that damn good polyamory. I love it. And I'm great for it. I'm so grateful. And I'm great for it. I'm great for it. I mean, eventually, some say inevitably. Yeah. I love pop songs. I love playing the same four chords over and over again. I think that's what I can feel happy. So the four chords of love. Name the chords, man. Name the chords. The four chords of love. Communication. Melody. Melody. Harmony. Harmony. And good sex. Wow. Wow. And that is how to make it work. G for good sex. G for good sex. Go ahead.
Well, it looks like it's my turn to introduce myself. Go on, then. You want a little backing? Sure. You want a backing from me? Jesus. Oh. Oh. Sure. No, I'll let Lazarith. Lazarith and Lapis. Lapis and Lazarith. And Rosie. And Rosie. Hello, my children. My brothers, my sisters, my siblings of all kinds. This is something to fellow tune. How did you fall into the suit so fast? How did you fall? You fell out of tune. I'll do what you talk. That's what happens in the sun, by the way. D turns to a G. Pretty fast. Pretty fast. When you're on Ocean Avenue, sometimes the strum you hit is a different one altogether. Friends call me copper mountain baton. Copper. Ever since I was little, I was really different. I was wearing suspenders in second grade. And mind you, I was going to school in Connecticut. No.
I was different. No. I used to go by different names. I used to go by Haseed. I used to go by Pepito. Pepito was one. I was always different and always unique. And I always led with an energy that said, what's that guy going to do? Can I tell you what? It's weird to be on the pier with you. Why? So many people are saying each other's names, and they're going, Dylan, you go, what? And it's other people talking. Because I've gone by so many names. Yeah. But you know, it's not seraptitious or shady in any way. I choose different names based on who I am in my life. At one time, I was somebody named Trashcan for a week. Trashcan was wild. Trashcan was a tough time in my life. You were going through it. I mean, you just went through that awful breakup where you broke up with 15 people in second? I believe it was kind of a... Poly divorce. It was a poly divorce. It was 15 people at the same time. A poly catastrophe. They kicked me out of the polycule. No. And so it was a 15 person breakup. Oh, well, you hate it. I did. I remember them separately with you
or was it one just going to group up? Yeah. Well, so we did four or five. And then I said, all right, if we're all going to do this, can everyone just come in? Because I didn't want to do one by one if I knew it was all going to be. It just, the writing was not the same. And it's hard that out of 15, not one of them wanted to stay with you. That's hard. It's tough. But I wish them all well. And I heard they're into making jam now. And I'm jealous. How'd you hear it? I heard it through well. The grapevine. And I know you'll be mine. But baby, baby, I heard it. So something that does keep accidentally happening is I keep blowing into the microphone. Because I think you're seeing this. So you do hear that. That's somebody who does use my sorry to the me so far. I keep doing this. I keep going. And maybe the end you want to go back and show that. Maybe you're like a nice little. I can't wait to talk it, man. I speak with my melodica. Absolutely. Would you believe it?
I'm completely untrained. I just listened to it. I just believe untrained on the melodica. Watch me. Play yourself. Don't believe me. Just watch. Yeah, I could see how you're untrained. I love it. It sounds like weird music when you're walking. It sounds like a kind of a keyboard. Kind of sounds like a toy that you give to a three-year-old. You don't tell me. What I'll tell you is that's the best part about busking is you don't need to sustain anything for too long. Not in. People walk in math. They say the great gift of busking that Mother Earth and Mother Gaia gave to us is that people's expectations are rock low. They are rock low. They are low. If you can bring them anything entertaining, even slightly, they will be overjoyed and overwhelmed. Exactly. If you supersede their expectations, then they want to. It's also the music is a moment to it's an invitation
to start a conversation. Absolutely. I can tell you how many. Long conversations I've had with strangers who just stopped by to go, hey, I like the rhythm of that song. What is that song? And then I tell them, and then I don't know, maybe we go out for a drink or something. Maybe we... That happened a lot to you, Rosie. It happens a lot to me. Wow, we, Rosie. It happens a lot to me. Well, because you're doing a lot of spoken song, which I like. You're taking people that walk by and kind of telling a story, kind of like, jewel used to do when she used to bus. I love it. And come up with a whole story about their life in just a couple seconds. Yeah, with just me and my bass drum, like if I'm walking, like, take that man over there, that PA, walking down there, he's dressed in stage blacks. Stage blacks. This is good. Hey there, man. Looking at your stage blacks. Hey there, man. Hey there, man. Look at your stage blacks. Hey there. You've come up. So funny. A beautiful full story.

Photographer, hold that camera, what's he looking for? What's he looking for? What's he looking for in your photographer? When your photographer, it's almost like the glasses, but your glasses, they're a camera. Your glasses, they're a memory, a memory that lasts forever. You could put it in a picture book or an or a frame or an iPhone camera roll. That's a photographer. I love how the drum got louder and they almost had a panic attack. So poor, your glasses are a memory. From that photographer and I'm walking by, I feel seen, heard, and I love. And I'm speeding up my walk. I would say, I think I love my bass girl. I love my bass. My bass, I call her Jerry Seinfeld, my bass girl. Your bass girl? Your bass girl? I'm called Jerry Seinfeld. I'm called Jerry Seinfeld. I bring her with me everywhere in my busking career. But I will say she intimidates some people. The resonance is, it's tough for some people to hear. Especially when people are, you know, maybe they take a little, a little bit of mushroom,
a little bit of marijuana on the beach. They're walking around and they hear this sort of booming heartbeat. It's tribal. It's tribal. It makes some people, some people aren't ready to address what's in their heart. No. But the bass gets to the root of what's in your heart. It gets to the broody. What's in your heart? What's crazy too is we all come from such different schools of love and music. You know, I'm the classic Bob Dylan guy. I'm also kind of a bell and Sebastian guy because I have a lot of guy. That's what I was going to ask. Who's everybody's biggest icon? And why is it Mumford & Sons? Why is it the Luminiers? It's fun. Why is it Jason Razz? They were buskers first, man. They came from the culture. They came from the culture. I mean, Simon Cowell was a busker. Was he busking notes? Bus judging. He was bus judging. He was busk judging. We actually have a... I think I found an old clip of him on YouTube we could play. Okay, I've been busking. Bus judging in London. Wow. Yeah.
Kate walking. Bad walk. Excuse me? Bad walk. I'm just walking work. It's a bad walk. We're a fuck you, man. Hey, you're all going to a Hollywood. Bing. Wow. I'm 25 cents in your hand. Wow, that was an interesting... LAUGHTER Really interesting clip of him. Really short on Blackberry. Yeah. Blackberry Pearl. It was getting more good in Ramsey if I'm doing this. But everyone has busks. I've seen people busk and do all kinds of towns. It's not about the music always. It's about the bus, the art of entertainment. The purist are entertainment. How are you going to get eyes long enough to get a cent? It's not about the money. It's about the interaction. At least in the bus, podcasters. Oh, yeah. Oh, those guys who are sitting there offering hot takes about the difference between New York and LA. And it's hard to know the difference because you go, are those two just sitting on a bench? Yeah, are they podcasters?
Oh, they're talking in the ice cream cone. So you just notice not a real podcasters. LAUGHTER Yeah, might be a maca on that. I don't know. I don't think you can put a maca in ice cream. Yeah. Like these days, you can't just walk by a bench and think it's just two people on a bench. It could be a podcas, could be a musical, could be a short film. Well, that's what we had to talk about. I mean, the ticked talkification of busking. It's how it's buscering has moved into the online space. And it's become more about the modern day busk is the NPC roleplaying online. Have you seen this? Yeah, I have. The modern day busk is the most popular. The modern day busk is the most popular. The modern day busk is the most popular. The modern French girl? The think about it. Because on ticked talk, they have this option where you can donate. You can donate. And people play NPCs for donations. Live when they're live. Oh, yeah. You talk about that girl like, pussy cat doll or whatever. Yeah. And the guy who pretends to be spot me. Yeah. I mean, there's a whole good culture of these people online. That's the modern day busk.
Oh, you never thought about that. I'm not just on that. I'm genuine. I'm genuinely moved by it. You never seen those, when the people are under a giant water balloon. No, no, no, no, no, don't donate. Don't donate. Don't donate it'll pop. That's a modern day bus. Or I love seeing a man in the middle of the night just singing people who put their name in the comments. Yeah, with a thing. With a thing. With a thing. We can do it these days, like it's a beautiful way that busking is going to transfer to the algorithm. Yeah. Yeah. It's nice to know it's not going away because busking in its heart is a very human thing, man. I mean, is anyone have any moments that they realize that they're changing the world by their busking? Oh, man. None come to mind. All right, I'm good. We can move on. I think it's less about feeling like you're changing the world, but you're more just. Add a smile as someone's face for a second. That feels like. That's what I meant. Yeah, I meant I'm just asking you what. Play me in. When you walk.
Because there was this one lady one time. And I was busking on the side of the highway. I got a tune this thing. It's that's the one that's wrong. Yeah. Lady walking on the side of the highway. Lost her shoes, lost her place in life. See, that's what we talked about. It doesn't work. It doesn't really work. We're disconnected like that. Don't just happen. Don't just happen. Why we don't play together. But that's what I'd say what just happened was this is too close. Yeah. We buske all the time together before away. That was that was when you accidentally the little too close to you here. Two buskers doing two different things. And it's a little too close. I got to do that. We are very specifically not a band. And there's a reason for that. We're not a band. Because you know, we play our best when we are exchanging glances as co-workers from down on third street prom and on different ends. You know, I'm with a different ends talking to each other.
Truly. And I think like sometimes we'll go like just like how there's a I saw on the pit recently. I watched the pit sometimes. Can't watch the pit do capitalist for me. Oh, no. Well, I said sometimes there's bleed. Right. There's a bleed. There's a clot. And I'd say sometimes we walk in between our buskins stations and we go there's bleed here. Yeah. Like just now there was a bleed there and the sound went into that and it wasn't a collapse. You don't want on accident collapse. You only want purposeful collapse. We're like a, you know, changing the channels, a city block version. You walk past one person he's playing a month for its own. You walk past another person he's playing Kings of Leon. You walk past another person they're playing, you know, a sander. Yeah. All these people, they're very, very different. It's a beautiful tapestry. Can I ask you guys how what's your technique for asking people respectfully to tip? You know, when people stand around for a long time and they've clearly listened and enjoyed to a song.
The funny tip. I mean, that's what you got to go like. And if you want to, my house is empty. Yeah. I have some phrase. What's you trying to wear this one on my head? I said, if your pockets feel heavy, oh, take care of that. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Do one that you do on there. What? Put your, put your fingers on there. Oh, okay. Yeah. Let's do a little bit of this. Hat empty. Hat empty. Hat empty. You can get it on this. A minor E. Hat is empty. Hat. On the ground. Fill it up. Make your old man proud. Hat is empty. On the ground. Fill it up. Make your old man proud. Hat.
Hat. Hat. Hat. Hat. Hat. Hat. Hat. Hat. Hat. Hat. Hat. Your hat feels empty. Put something in it. If your hat feels empty. Put something in it. If your hat feels empty. Put something in it. Help! Hat empty on the ground. Make your old man proud. Hat empty on the ground. Hat empty on the ground. Hat empty. Wow, that would be so good, guys. We got to film that. We got to film that. We're going to say at the end of that. Were you inspired by something?
I don't remember. I'm just happy to be here. Oh, my God. Rosie. This is what life is all about. Would you say so? You all ever have a toddler come in and kick your hand off of me? It's one of the toddlers or Satan's little minions, I would say. Parents think that kids are cute all the time. They're not cute to us, man. Three to five is the worst age to bus for. Unless they know a song that they want to sing. Yeah. And if you can sing with that kid, millions of dollars. This is what I do if I see a kid coming. It feels so good to jam. It feels so good to jam with you. It feels so good to jam with you. Oh, good to jam. God, it's the best thing in the world to jam. It's just the best thing in the world to jam. I feel so bad for regular people who have to clock. Mr. Business, never jam in like this. The salary man. The salary man goes in to Wheezy. With the salary man. The salary man. The salary man. The salary man. He goes in and out in his suit. Come on. The salary man. He's friends with the record label man. And he goes in with his suit. The salary man is friends with the politician man. He goes in with his suit. The salary man is friends with the accounting man.
They're punching the money. They're taking the tab. They're walking on in with their suits. Quick, the temple's changing. The salary man don't know what's happening in the streets. The salary man must never go to the streets. No, it's illegal for the salary man to be on the streets. The salary man. The free-threat. The salary man. Free the liaisy. The salary man is only him. Only him. Never, eligible. Battery. Total salary man. Saturday Man. Salary man. Salary Man. Salary Man. Right. It's good. We have certainty now that we're starting a trip. We'll go to mellanlamур. Onspoken. Onspoken. Where did you see Spotify? On theturns. I guess if you never jam, you know what this is. I don't know how you guys are never jam. They said you could. We want to hurt this. We never jam.
They said we'd medically couldn't. They said you never could. They said if we did, we died. But you know what happened. You did. I want to know if anyone gave you the opportunity to get off the street and sing and sing inside. What would you sing? I would be so confused. I would know what to do. Because what are you doing inside? What do you say? What does there just sing about? I mean, what's even sound like in there? I'm not saying that buskers don't know what to do when they go inside a record label. It's just us. It's just that we don't know. I guess I'd be scared to play inside because I'd have to hear myself. I think that's what makes me nervous. What are you my sounding like? No, tell me. You sound good. Thank you. I want you to feel. I want you to feel. You sound a little bit. And I just want you to make a mess on your melodica. I just want you to play. I want you to play the sounds of your heart. OK, I'm going to kind of loose a little bit. I want you to let this. I'm going to be a little more informal. That was my formal plan. And you know what? If this is good enough, maybe we'll take this inside. Rosie, and I want to see what you thought.
Jerry has to say. I think Lapis is going to sing a little. OK, if you guys insist. Well. Here we go. Ooh. Doggy. OK. I guess I'm forced to sing inside. Yeah. I really hope it is all right. Ta. Here we go. Here we go. When you're singing inside, there is an echo. So I guess I'll just have to let go. Here we go.
Yeah, cause it's music, the power of a note. It's music, like every good quote. It's music. It's good to jam. It's so good to jam. It's so good to jam. It feels good to jam. We could bottle up the feeling of the jam and drink it all night long. When you, I can't wait for you to look back at your face. When you're doing, cause I know we don't bust you for the cameras often. But you are, you are always so. You are blowing so hard. And it looks like you're liking pain. I don't care how it looks. I don't care how it looks.
It sounds damn good. You may look weird, but you look good. It sounds damn good. Hey, can I gas you all a favor at home? Go ahead, gas come on. Gas come. Gas come. Gas come. Gas come. If you like what you saw tonight, why don't you leave a dollar on the tip jar? In a dollar on YouTube is a like for us. Yeah. Why don't you leave us a little like or a dollar? Yeah, just comment the phrase one dollar. And remember, man, next time you're out there seeing someone and you choose to walk on by, maybe stop. Double back and listen to that guy's story. Cause we all got story. We all got story. And this is the last story we'll leave you with. It's a story of... 2 Well you can work on the wall between then two props. Yeah
Wait wait, actually then we'll cut that piece into one point. This one, right now the wall is filled by a different layer. You know that color is something we both know. Yeah yeah yeah it's something we don't know in Iran. Let's say this song called ABSYE. You write it well. Now bus can move. Now bus can move. Now bus can move. Now bus can move. I got Lazarus and Rosie. And I think your neighbor's dairy is covered. So close. And there ain't no way to bus correct. There ain't no way to bus proper. Proper. Proper. Because of buskin, comes from the soul. The place where music comes to. Buskin comes from the soul.
The place where music comes to. Buskin comes from the soul. The place where music comes to. Buskin comes from the soul. The place where music comes to. Jerry's on the phone solo. She's losing it. She's losing it. She's losing it. Buskin comes from the soul. The place where music comes to. Buskin comes from the soul. And there ain't no way to bus. Buskin comes to. Buskin comes to. Buskin comes to. Buskin comes to. Buskin comes from the soul. The place where music comes to. Buskin comes from the soul.
The place where music comes to. Do you guys have a license to play out here? It's in my car. Show your busking license or else you have to get up. No, we're cool. My dad is Eric Garcetti. What? Your dad is Eric Garcetti. Thank you. Thank you so much. I know, my dad is Eric Garcetti. Yeah, don't leave with it. You leave with your dad. Buskin comes to the soul.
